#megs is reading #I would've linked it as a full link but it didn't parse right. which probably means it has some settings against AI which. good for them!#hilariously I was complaining immediately before reading it that SO MUCH of the discussion around burnout and overwork are like #'well you should train yourself to enjoy things and live in the moment and say fuck work and not worry about it making you more productive!#and like. as a writer. as a person whose brain will eat itself alive if I do not write. NOT because augh productivity #but cuz [that one post about how if you don't draw the images will clog up inside you and make you sick]#this does not ever spark joy. I want to do the work I enjoy and find fulfilling! I want that work to be valued enough to let me do it!#where is my discussion around burnout for people who like. can in fact sit down and enjoy a nice cup of tea or cooking a pot of soup #that's not the goddamn problem here. the problem is that not all labor is valued and in fact very little labor if any is valued.#the products are labor are valued. the labor itself is an inconvenient stepping stone that it would be nice to not have to take.#ANYWAY I'm just going to go try to finish my fucking book draft now. and convince myself that it matters.

There are lots of reasons to hate AI generators right now. But aside from the plagiarism, the impact on career artists of all stripes, and the general use of AI for grifting schemes, they also just really suck if you already have trouble with unreality.

I'm not talking about "oooh those AI images sure are creepy."

I'm talking about "folks with low media literacy are telling me, a nervous, obsessive wreck, that Unreality-Type Things are Definitely Real because the Smart Science Fiction Machine told them so."

There's an old lady who frequents my workplace as a customer, and she likes me, y'know? I keep the place clean, I let her chat. I'm polite. So, she's decided that I'm a nice person who deserves to be warned if something bad is happening in the world. Trouble is, she eats up every news source without scrutiny, and has chipperly informed me that "ignorance is not bliss" when I've admitted that I don't follow the news very closely (for mental health reasons.)

Anyway, her daughter's taken to addressing the AI software in her phone about current political events. So the old lady came to me one day, very nervous, and quietly informed me that World War Three is probably going to happen in November.

Because the AI said so. And the AI, it's smart right? That's why it's callled "artificial intelligence." It's gotten fed all that knowledge, so it must know these things.

Except that it doesn't. Text AI are just sentence generators. No context, no awareness, no thought process to speak of.

I know this. I'm not socially competent enough to inform her of this in-person, since that requires more talking than an "uh-huh, yep," but I know this. I know that World War Three is not happening in November just because an AI said so. Ask an AI "when is WW3 happening?" ten different times, and it'll give you ten different answers. Tell it that it's full of crap, and it'll automatically apologize right before spitting out the next crap answer.

But she doesn't know this.

She's trying to warn me about something that scares her.

And she does not know that in trying to warning me, she is a) ineffective, and b) inflicting a different kind of harm.

Because my terrible, frustrating brain, with its ten different kinds of internal malware and software glitches, is looking over my shoulder at the future just in case. And so is she.

AI is misinformation and misinformation is hell.

I was bored and started feeding ChatGPT Hopaz info (I also feed it some of Topaz’s bio) for like an hour and asking it questions about their personalities and such, trying to see how accurate it was (pretty damn accurate). And this was the question I threw at and the reply that made me go “yo, wtf???”

I didn’t even put much info about like the tribe’s system or her title in the bio. How did it come up with a cohesive and correct answer like this 😭 like that’s more of an explanation than what I could have gave. That’s crazy man…

#ai as like… a brainstorming and pre-rewriting tool could be super helpful!#now that doesn’t mean I want it writing the whole story cause it definitely sucks at that #like it has like a pg filter on it and it sounds super corny when you have it write out a whole scene #so don’t do that #like I feel it could help you with fleshing out your character and motives as a starting point #now this is my opinion as a fan artist/hobbiest #if you’re doing legit writing a book then idk if you want to feed your original ideas up in these #I personally don’t mind cause all of my work is based of fan characters anyway #I just thought it was kinda cool how it comes up with answers!#callyie chat

Zero Day Director commentary - With actor Andre Keuck

#movies #film #cinema #Damn I wish Cal was here #Andre and Ben are really interesting to listen to #This movie is one of those movies where it needs like 3 commentaries #It needs one with just Ben Coccio by himself #then one with Cal and Andre by themselves #then another with all 3 of them #Not all movies do that but I love when studios/filmmakers have multiple commentaries to create a sense of thorough intimacy #due to the nature of how commentaries are set up they can be quite restrictive/pressing/limited with no pauses or rewinds.#so I find cast/crew don't have enough time or able to present how they would like to if they could edit/rewind or pause for fluent presenta #So I love when they have director commentaries and actor commentaries or composer commentaries #Platoon's dvd extras are so dope they got multiple commentaries and one with military adviser Dale Dye who was a RL vietnam vet #Or Hostel's commentaries where one is just Eli Roth and another is Tarantino and Eli Roth with Scott Spiegal #idk if Zero Day ever got a blu-ray release but I think it should but the DV technology of the camera is kinda at it's limit of resolution #but an AI upscaling with 20 years later retrospective with Ben Cal and Andre would be sooo dope along with updated commentaries #Every few years I always rewatch Zero Day so that time has come that last few days lol #Ever since Columbine as a lil kid I have always been into spree-murders and active shooter incidents #I remember reading a peer-reviewed paper called Pseudo-Commandos #And Eric and Dylan and Andre and Cal would be dubbed Pseudo-Commandos where they dress up in a semi-military fashion #and have a delusion of superiority mixed with perceived sense of persecution whether it's true or not #it went into the Postal shooter from the 80s as well and what he went through along #plus I read another book called Going Postal which also went into postal shootings along with school shootings #I want to make a film about spree murders or an active shooter/s but I remember just getting so tired of the subject matter #because every 3 weeks there was some new shooter in the headlines and I found myself not wanting to be exploitative #When I write/direct my film I'd like it to address and study the character of such an individual but not try to be too political #or exploitative and focus on the ambiguities that are left behind when someone does this #as a society I noticed we stopped asking the questions on why and stopped having constructive conversations #it feels like as a coping mechanism we've started treating them like tornados or natural disasters

i havemixed feelings on ai like yes on one hand we also do the same shit ai does whenever we reference or take inspo from anything. On the other hand people are losing their jobs because ai is taking over the art industry. And yes this isnt about ai itself and just regular capitalism refusing to pay people but even then i have a knee jerk reaction to ai art and i cant even lie lol. id take a hundred traced ocs of kids over 1 ai pic thats an amalgamation of dozens that didnt consent to their art being made into building blocks. And yes ig thas a failing on my part but it just pisses me off:/

For clarification im not saying "its not art bc its effortless" and i dont want to get into what is art but at the very least i dont rlly support something that steals from hundreds of artists including those barely affording to live, those dead and those disabled. Like i just cant even if is for personal use it pisses me off too much

Yet another edit: this isnt about copyrighting art styles or property theft. Theft can be theft of labor. People are being laid off because someone clicks a button and gets what they want without having to pay artists. And again i am AWARE this is because of capitalism and that AI is a neutral tool. But it doesnt stop me from having a negative reaction PERSONALLY

#allison's work life #artificial generation fuckery #in point of fact we're lumping a lot of things into 'AI' so probably bits of them are all true #i think AI narration probably is here to stay because we've been mass training that for ages (what did you think alexa and siri were?)#i think ai covers will stick around on the low price point end unless those servers go the way of crypto #but as with everywhere they'll be limited because you can't ask an ai for design alts #(and do you guys know how many fucking passes it takes to make minute finicky changes to get exec to sign off on a cover?)#i think ai translation for books will die on the vine - you'd have to feed the whole text of your book to the ai and publishers hate that #ai writing is absolute garbage at long form so it will never replace authorship #it's also not going to be used to write a lot of copy because again you'd have to feed the ai your book and publishers say no way #like the thing to keep in mind is publishers want to save money but they want to control their intellectual property even more #that's the bread and butter #the number 1 thing they don't want to do is feed the books into an LLM #christ we won't even give libraries a fair deal on ebooks you think they're just going to give that shit away to their competitors??#but also i don't think the server/power/tech issue is sustainable for something like chatgpt and it is going to go the way of crypto #is humanity going to create an actual artificial intelligence that can write and think and draw?#yeah probably eventually #i do not think this attempt is it #they got too greedy and did too much too fast and when the money dries up? that's it #maybe I'm wrong but i just think the money will dry out long before the tech improves

ok controversial take but it occurs to me that floyd is arguably one of the most rational characters in the odyssey series. like not to say he didn't make some real dick moves but they were never for the sake of being a dick there was usually solid reasoning involved
