Massive London protest demands permanent ceasefire in Gaza
TENS of thousands of pro-Palestinian protesters marched through central London on Saturday (25) to call for a permanent ceasefire in the Gaza Strip, the latest in a series of weekend demonstrations in the capital since the seven-week war began.Saturday’s rally, which involved 45,000 campaigners according to police estimates, took place during a four-day truce between Israel and the Palestinian Islamist group Hamas, the first break in the fighting, but protesters said that was not enough.

just so you know how normal the UK is, left wing climate change activists and anti-monarchy protesters are getting jail time and beaten for simply holding up banners and being considered disruptive whilst right wing bullshitters against shit like ULEZ (literally about having areas that are specifically for ultra low emissions so we, y'know, don't constantly have to breathe in fucking car fumes and other pollutants because some fucking people actually bizarrely want to???) and road safety limits EVEN FUCKING RIGHT NEAR SCHOOLS are driving basically massive vehicles through the streets and are not considered a disruptive protest

In October 1936, Ellen Wilkinson led 200 unemployed men on a march from the town of Jarrow in Tyneside, north-east England. Eighty per cent of the workforce in the steel and shipyard town were unemployed; child mortality was double the national average. The unemployed men marched nearly 300 miles to the House of Commons, with a 12,000-name petition, begging for help.
Tumblr media
Official trade unions refused to support the march, and the Prime Minister Stanley Baldwin would not meet them. After the marchers delivered the petition, it was promptly lost – the matter was not debated in the Houses of Parliament, and the government offered no assistance. It was a dramatic demonstration of the indifference of the wealthy men and women in government to the want and despair of the working classes.

In 1910, after a parliamentary bill for votes for propertied women ran out of time, 300 women marched on the Houses of Parliament and were met by policemen, who were said to have been deliberately drafted in from working-class areas and instructed to beat and abuse genteel women.

Every time I see news of crowds agitating against Israel outside a synagogue, or museum, or Jewish day school full of children, or restaurant, or educational event, and so on in the US, every time my thought is why the fuck aren't you holding this 'protest' at city hall? Or your state legislature? Or your federal reps' offices?
A random Jewish institution in the United States has absolutely zero power to affect the decisions made by Israel's parliament or military. You're not "raising awareness" or "drawing attention to the issue" because the general public of the US is already at least somewhat aware thanks to the news, and Jewish people are in fact one of the groups in the US to be the most fucking aware of what's going on.
If you are upset by US military aid going to Israel, you need to convince your federal representatives to change that. Those reps do not base US military foreign aid policy on random US citizens harassing other US citizens.
If you want the US to provide more civilian relief in the form of food, medicine, or helping refugees come here, you need to convince reps at every level. Can your city partner with a refugee organization to arrange housing? Can your governor arrange scholarships or exchange programs to state universities? Can the feds channel more funds to Doctors Without Borders?
Do a write and call-in campaign. Hold your protest at legislatures. File a petition. Do something to directly express your desires to the elected officials who have a direct say in policy.
We've held protests at city halls and state legislatures and federal buildings for centuries. Why aren't you doing so for this issue?
Why are you macing people attending synagogue? They have no more power over elected officials' choices than you do.
Why are you screaming at schoolchildren? They have less power over elected officials' choices than you do.
Why are you blocking entrance to a museum? Hold a fundraiser to build your own, if you want to educate people so badly!
I know the antisemites don't actually care about US military & foreign aid policy. I know the racists are simply reveling in an excuse to whip up a mob to attack Jews. It's obvious.
But if you really, truly want to help the people of Gaza, you need to stop being part of that hateful mob, and organize your own, real political actions that directly engages with your elected representatives.

MPs in the house of parliament were scared because they thought there was protesters/attackers outside, but actually it was hundreds of K-pop stans running around because they saw one of their idols.

Major coordinated demonstrations took place across the world on Saturday to mark the 100th day of Israel's bombardment and military assault on the people of the Gaza Strip that have now claimed the lives of nearly 24,000 Palestinians, a large majority of them innocent men, women, and children who had nothing to do with the attacks orchestrated by Hamas on October 7 of last year.
In London, as many as 500,000 people marched on Parliament Square to demand an immediate cease-fire Gaza, condemn their own U.K. government's support of Israel's disproportionate and "genocidal" onslaught, and warn against a wider regional war that experts warn is creeping closer by the day.[...]
In Dublin, organizers of a march that saw more than 100,000 march through city streets called it the largest rally for Palestinian rights in Irish history.[...]
The crowd was filled with Palestinian flags, posters calling for an "End to the Gaza genocide" as well as makeshift washing lines, with baby clothes hanging from it, representing the many young lives lost in the conflict.
At the front of the march, four people held mock corpses in bloody body bags to represent the growing number of civilian casualties.
In the United States, tens of thousands marched in Washington, D.C. to denounce the Israeli onslaught—which has claimed over 23,000 lives, including more than 10,000 children—as well as their own government's complicity in the carnage. President Joe Biden was on the tip of many demonstrators' tongues and polls in the U.S. have shown very little support across the political spectrum for how he is handling the situation.[...]
Following the march, demonstrators left a pile of bloodied baby dolls, including severe parts, in a pile outside the White House as a message to Biden. "The blood of the over 10,000 murdered children in Gaza is on his hands," said CodePink co-founder Jodie Evans.
Meanwhile, in Indonesia, thousands gathered outside the U.S. embassy in Jakarta to condemn the ongoing "genocide" in Gaza perpetrated by Israel with the backing of the U.S. government and other Western allies.
Large protests were also held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia as well as in the South African cities of Cape Town and Johannesburg. [...]
Cities in Israel were not among those holding large-scale demonstrations against the government's ongoing military campaign in Gaza. One application by Israelis for a rally in Haifa to denounce the onslaught was rejected.

best will in the world why would the leopards want to be into reforming the electoral system that can only ever end up with leopards getting to eat at least an amount of face?
(a clue to this is that half the "leopards chewing on you" candidates have recently jumped ship from the supposedly electorally doomed "leopards eat your face" party because the "chewing" party platform is increasingly "leopards chewing your face quite hard and maybe they swallow some chunks, and we threw out everyone who suggested maybe we should dial it back to leopards licking your face")
frankly nobody is less likely to be into electoral reform than new labour, unless it's the tories, but given that they're the only 2 parties which have stood to benefit from FPTP in the last 140 years or something, you know, why WOULD they?
quick unscientific poll for my own interest
#red said#i fucking hate uk politics i swear to god. it is GOOD AND HEALTHY for people to demand options other than Blue Tory and Red Tory#and frankly when has 'hold your nose and vote for the least bad one' worked?#and also where was this energy in 2016 or 2019 when a leftwing option was on the menu?#nowhere bc all the 'hold your nose and get the Tories out' centrists suddenly got REAL INVESTED in holding their nose to keep Corbyn out#anyway you either believe polling in which case Labour could lose half their predicted seats and still walk it#or you don't in which case tactical voting is pointless and you should vote with your fucking conscience#'oh get the Tories out' yes i agree and if a single labour member could make a sell as to where their policy is meaningfully better#without literally getting deselected or moved or having the whip removed. then boy howdy I'd be down with replacing them with Labour!#did you see they took yer man out of Clacton who was polling strong against Nigel Farage? for what?#removed the whip from multiple people for arguing that Tory policy on teams people or migrants is bad#once again prioritised undercutting Corbyn over assuring a win in Islington#and oh yeah their manifesto commitments are to crack down on protest stop the small boats 'protect women's spaces' and#send the workshy benefits leeches back to work#and privatise the nhs. and continue fiscal austerity.#i cannot express how disinterested i am in packing the House to the gills with one party who can't even bring themselves to oppose#current government legislation WHILE LITERALLY ACTING AS THE OPPOSITION.#half the reason I've been voting SNP is so SOMEBODY in Parliament will oppose the Tories bc it sure as fuck hasn't been Labour#so yeah man if Labour want us to vote for them as anything less than an only-option they should try OFFERING LITERALLY A SINGLE REASON#i don't give a shit how the leopards BRAND THEMSELVES i give a shit whether anyone in the room is saying hey man maybe eat not face instead

This stuff really punctures the dopey dream like wankdom of royals in the UK, where they're detached from the horrors of their family and their class
When they go abroad, people protest, turn up with guillotines etc and you can almost hear the daily mail weeping that our king has had an unpleasantary happen to him
He'll come back to the UK and they'll lick his wounds and it'll carry on again

I find myself interested in how ineffective integration was for Ireland vis a vis the UK in the 19th century. Certainly after 1832 voting reforms and the 1829 repeal of the ban on Catholics serving in parliament (UK-wide but ofc hitting Ireland the hardest), the Irish were at more-or-less equal footing as the English or Scots when it came to voting rights and the legal system (I think most people don't know this! They think the Irish couldn't vote in the 19th century!) And it wasn't even an "on paper" deal for voting rights, Irish were active in government (they even had Irish PMs, though ofc Protestant), by the latter half of the 19th century economic regulations were equalized, and they got within a hair's breadth of Home Rule before some munitinous unionists and WW1 got in the way. Despite the rep a lot of countries have gigantic ethnic minorities, and liberalism/equal franchise is actually pretty decent solution to that problem. Why didn't ~100 years of representation in the House of Commons, in the era when "nation building" was at its peak, not work?
From what I can tell, timing is of course part of it. At a simple level, World War One was such a nationalist godsend; it created the "radicalism cascade", a weakened center and domino revolutions inspiring everyone with a cause with a sort of temporal Schelling Point. Without it, would the 1912 Home Rule have just been implemented in due time, and Ireland would be like Scotland today? At a more structural level, the timing was particularly rough because WW1 was the tail end of the age of religion in Europe. So much of the conflict was over Protestant vs Catholic, and after WW2 if Ireland was united under one home rule government in the UK it's hard to imagine the secularizing age powering so much conflict. Had they "held on" a few more decades you could see it calming down.
I think those are true enough but you do gotta dig down to another level. "Protestant" wasn't really just a religion in Ireland - it was the Protestant Ascendancy, a ruling class of combined English settlers and converted Irish who, during the imperial era before the 19th century, built an entirely separate ruling class in Ireland. And it was a deep ruling class - Catholics were barred from voting in even the Dublin local parliament, they were banned from being judges or lawyers, inheritance law was rigged to privilege Protestant sons while converting away from the Anglican church came with property confiscations. Depending on what counts, at its peak in the 18th century up to 30% of the country had opportunistically converted, in a system rigged top to bottom against the Catholics.
Imagine for a second India was given representation in the House of Commons and given self-rule. Just ignore the distance and demography issues for now, this obviously wouldn't actually work, instead think about what that transition would look like. The British "Indian Civil Service" would have to be dismantled...which was like 10k brits vs over 100k Indians. Actual british military officers in the country in the 19th century was less than 100k - and it was a rotating duty, they didn't all live there. Dismantling that really isn't that hard! Those people just go home. The core that ruled was deeply integrated into the country, but it was tiny - the vast majority of India was ruled by Indians, in the name of the Crown. They would just...keep going but now be in parliament.
That was impossible in Ireland. Britain had actually launched one of the most intensive cultural conversion programs of a foreign nation around in the 17th and 18th centuries, it was nowhere close to the "light imperial touch" of elsewhere. But it never...worked. Instead it just built this gigantic ruling class, deeply enmeshed in both Ireland and England, completely dependent on that superiority economically, but seen as outsiders by the Catholic Irish majority. "Protestant & Catholic" is at least half a gigantic class war. And in the 19th century the UK brought "laissez faire liberalism" to Ireland and was like "look, we are equal now!" after two+ centuries of rigging the system. It was literally the "kicking out the ladder after climbing up" equality meme.
This was why Home Rule was so bitterly contested, why Protestant Anglo-Irish officers threatened to mutiny in 1912 if it was implemented. They understood that the first acts of Home Rule were going to be, essentially, reparations. Which the Irish almost surely deserved. But Imperial, Liberal, 19th Century UK was not going to give reparations to the fucking Irish, it was not ready to dismantle its dejure and defacto aristocrats in that way - or at least not until it was too late, some land reform for example did begin in 1903. Scotland didn't need it, Wales was too weak to fight it, but Ireland was in the sweet spot of being weak enough to be oppressed but strong enough to oppose it and fight back once the culture changed.
Or at least that is my current read, this is a low-confidence post. Curious to learn more!
