Time-Lapse Balcony View From Mozambique
Through time manipulation, the city's pulsating energy unfolds as twinkling lights dance across the urban landscape, offering a hypnotic glimpse into the capital's dynamic rhythm after dark.
Perched in the newer tower of the Radisson Blu Hotel in Maputo, Mozambique’s vibrant capital, I captured a mesmerizing nighttime time-lapse. From my vantage point on the 16th or 17th floor, the bustling ocean cityscape unfolded in a kaleidoscope of twinkling lights mirrored in the tranquil Indian Ocean. Balcony Views Using a GoPro Hero 11, I employed time-lapse photography, where frames are…

With breathtaking views over Table Mountain, the world’s tallest building made of industrial hemp is set to open in Cape Town this June.
At 12 stories tall, the Hemp Hotel at 84 Harrison st. used carbon-negative materials that captured more carbon in the walls of the building than it emitted manufacturing them.
South African President Cyril Ramaphosa believes that the cannabis and hemp industry could create 130,000 jobs in places like Afrimat Hemp—the producer of the so-called “HempCrete” blocks which went into the hotel.
Made from water, lime, hemp, and a cement binder, the blocks from Afrimat Hemp are made of entirely South African hemp, which along with selling to corporate clients, are also used to build a number of social housing projects in South Africa and neighbouring Mozambique.
For the Hemp Hotel, Afrimat Hemp partnered with Wolf Architects in Cape Town for the build.
The company admit that hemp construction is 20% more expensive than traditional materials, but the urgency with which some corporations want to help tackle climate change offers them a unqiue opportunity: selling carbon credits—but with buildings, rather than trees.
“We can fund forests, or we can fund someone to live in a hemp house. It’s the same principle,” Afrimat Hemp’s carbon consultant Wihan Bekker told African News.
Company data shows that a 430 square foot house (40 square meters) produces 30 fewer tons of carbon than traditional methods, around what a mature tree can sequester in its roots across its lifetime.

The 263 km to the finishing line most of it on a 4 lane highway were flying by in no time. We were the first ones to arrive at the Oyster Box Hotel. After arrival and a welcome drink we got the car cleaned. 7 people worked on the car for 1,5 hours. Every part was taken out and wiped down. They even used a steamer to clean the sand out of the trunk and the inside. In the meantime the other cars came in one by one. It was a great hallo. Everyone was pleased we had survived the rough roads in Namibia and Mozambique.
„Missy the Merc“ has performed exceptionally well. We did not have any problem along the way not even a punctured tire! It will be picked up tomorrow and then shipped back to Europe.
In the afternoon we met Seonie an old rally friend from „P2P“ and the „Road to Mandalay“ with her new partner Peter. We invited them to join us for the final dinner. We had a lot of fun. Bruno knows how to party. Even in this respect the other rally companies could learn something from him. A band with 3 black singers rocked the evening and in no time the whole crowd was on the dance floor.
Len and I delivered a short thank you speech followed by the rally song „Smile“. Our rally cohorts sang their lungs out so they must have enjoyed it.
The evening ended in the bar with a couple of glasses of rum and by 23:30 we were in bed.
Another great adventure came to it’s end!

Aperçu of the Week:
"I have met children who have learned to count off 45 seconds - that's how long it takes for Russian missiles to hit Kharkiv after the siren alarm."
(German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock addressing the UN General Assembly on Thursday on the annual of Russia's attack on Ukraine)
Bad News of the Week:
Since the Ukraine war, everyone knows about the Wagner Group. Consisting of mercenaries, commanded by Putin compadre Yevgeny Prigozhin. While soldiers are placed in the chain of command of their officers, at least ostensibly serving the good of their country, the same is not true of mercenaries. They are simply on a pay roll. No matter by whom. If one can apply an ethical standard to acts of war at all, it certainly does not apply to mercenaries.
Even before the Ukraine operation, the Wagner Group was active. There is evidence of their action for at least Syria, Venezuela, Libya, Mali, Mozambique, the Central African Republic, and Sudan. With horrific reports of atrocities, including against civilians, that leave one speechless even in the context of war. As I said, the lack of ethical standard....
Prigozhin's recruitment strategy is particularly perfidious. He offers prisoners their freedom if they commit to a six-month war effort. According to Die Zeit, tens of thousands of prison inmates have already accepted. We are not talking about convicted purse-snatchers here. We are talking, for example, about Alexander Tyutin, who was sentenced to 23 years in prison for a quadruple contract killing. So - to put it sarcastically - a professional. Who is now recovering from his stint on the beach in Antalya. Yes, that's in Turkey. Yes, Turkey is a NATO member. But the man was, after all, pardoned by the legal system of his home country.
This course of action shows an appalling concatenation of different institutions. From the Ministry of Justice accepting this get out of jail card, to the Ministry of Interior signing off on the deal and allowing them to leave the country, to the Ministry of Defense inserting these special forces into their strategies, and the secret service providing them with military intelligence. Of course, this is only possible with the blessing of Vladimir Putin himself. Who uses the group as a geostrategic tool to exert international influence when ideology, the ruble, or fossil energy no longer work effectively enough.
I would not have thought that even at the level of Russian rule of law, I would be surprised by a parallel world in which even those low regulations no longer apply. Which shows that Putin believes himself to be above all earthly things. It cannot be a coincidence that he compares himself with Tsar Peter the Great, of all people. He went to war not only against the Crimea and Azov, but also against Sweden in the "Great Northern War". Will history teach us nothing once more?
Good News of the Week:
Humans are pushing nature back more and more because of their numbers and lifestyles. For example, orangutans in Indonesia are losing their habitat as humanity demands more and more palm oil. And Corona would not have existed either if the Chinese did not have such an appetite for wild animals. But this development is not only happening in Asia with its mega-populations. In the Alps, too, with more and more ski resorts, hotels, excursion destinations, etc., much natural habitat has already had to give way to concrete and steel.
Fortunately, there is a growing awareness that tourism can be sustainable and that it is the unspoiled beauty of nature that attracts tourists in summer and winter. As a result, more and more landscapes are being placed under nature conservation, and awareness of this is growing. And indeed: the first measurable successes are appearing!
The symbolic animal of the Alps is the chamois. The shy climbing specialists above the mountain forests stand for untamed alpine nature like no other animal. And according to the Bavarian State Forests, the population in the Bavarian Alps is recovering: 1,654 geese were counted at about a hundred observation points in 2020. In 2021, there were already 1,873 and in 2022 even 2,060. This fits a counterpart in the very north of Germany: on the coasts of the North Sea, the number and spread of the grey seal is increasing again. Not long ago, Germany's largest predator was considered "very endangered".
Personal happy moment of the week:
Saturday evening in Miesbach, the capital of our district: many people are out and about, you can hear talking and laughing, the pubs are full, light shines onto the street from decorated shop windows. Quite normal life, which after all feels new again after the last few years. It's a good thing that our friends had made reservations at the Osteria, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to get a seat. Simply a nice evening.
I couldn't care less...
...that Great Britain hardly has any access to vegetables and fruit anymore. Because the problems are home-made. Because of Brexit. It causes high customs and formality hurdles for exporting producers in the South, who thus prefer to sell in the European internal market. Domestic growers have been excluded from energy price subsidies, making it no longer profitable to operate greenhouses at home. And the cheap seasonal workers previously employed in agriculture, primarily from southeastern Europe, are no longer allowed into the country. Sorry, but you have deliberately chosen exactly this disaster.
As I write this...
...I am amazed at the unexpected return of winter. Since the beginning of the month the temperatures were clearly in the plus - up to 16 ° Celsius stood on the thermometer. Therefore, I had personally already ticked off the winter. Now I look at a snow-covered landscape and rejoice. And try not to think about the fact that Monday morning will be chaos on the roads and railways.
Post Scriptum
On the annual of Russia's attack on Ukraine, a new ice age is drawing near. On one hand, Putin changes his narrative: the West would use a Nazi puppet government in Kiev to threaten his country. Seeks military support from Belarus, Iran, China and others. Unilaterally cancels the New Start nuclear arms control program. On the other hand, NATO empowers its eastern flank: the "Budapest 9" strengthen their cooperation. Poland gets moral support from Joe Biden. Air defense systems are deployed on the Slovak border. Such a confrontation of global power blocs was last seen in the Cold War. And I thought those times were over once and for all...

Flutterwave CEO wins Fintech of the Year at African Banker Awards
Tumblr media
Flutterwave, Africa’s most valuable startup, has been named ‘Fintech of the Year’ at the African Banker Awards in recognition of its contributions to the financial technology sector in Africa. The award celebrates Flutterwave and other companies and individuals setting new standards of innovation and contributing to the growth and development of Africa’s banking sector over the past year.
The award is Flutterwave’s third international recognition in 2024 after the fintech giant was included in CNBC’s Disruptor 50 list and Fast Company’s Most Innovative Companies.
Although it remains unclear when Flutterwave will IPO, the awards might lend credence to Flutterwave’s ambitions to go public. The fintech company has been linked to an initial public offering since August 2023, when Olugbenga Agboola, its CEO, disclosed that the fintech would forge ahead with its 2022 IPO plans. The fintech has also recently changed up its executive team after several high-profile exits in recent months.
“We are incredibly honoured to receive this prestigious award,” said Agboola, in a statement seen by TechCabal.
The award ceremony took place last night at the JW Marriott Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya, where over 300 of Africa’s leading figures in banking and finance were attending the African Banker Awards gala.
“This recognition is a testament to the hard work, dedication, and creativity of the entire team at Flutterwave. It also reaffirms our mission to simplify payments for endless possibilities, and we remain committed to building solutions that enable multinationals to expand in and within Africa, and also supporting African companies to compete globally,” an excerpt from the statement read.
Flutterwave also received approval in principle for a payment aggregator licence from the Central Bank of Mozambique today as it looks to expand into the southeastern African region. The licence, if approved, will allow Flutterwave to support businesses expanding into Mozambique and global enterprises expanding into Africa.
Flutterwave’s key business is processing online payments, enabling international businesses like Uber to accept payments from African businesses and customers. The fintech allows these businesses and multinationals to accept various forms of payments, like mobile money, card payments, and bank transfers.

Day 55 Many ways to explore the Valley
This morning I woke up with a small burst blood vessel on my left cheek, weird. Maybe the impact of the young "Tony's"! Today I was determined to conquer the Valley by foot, train and water. I check with Miguel for any short cuts to Pinhão where I'm catching a return train to Pocinho. All I can understand is a path by the church. I set google maps and off I go, about 1 hour 40 through the dirt tracks and roads at Sandeman, past the vines and spectacular views onto the highway.
The train to Pocinho is about two hours return with a short stop to look around a village that didn't seem to have much to offer. The views along the way were spectacular, more so from Pinhão to Tua, about half way, than the last part of the journey. Tua seemed to be a popular spot for eating, with a handful of restaurants on either side of the track.
Back in Pinhão I make a dash to grab some lunch, the first spot doesn't have much on offer and no clientele. I then head to a popular pasteleria I saw on Friday, but it is closed. Back to another pasteleria that looked decent. I scan the short menu and ask for baguete de atum (tuna baguette), they have none. I go to the next pasteleria, the grumpy woman seems to indicate they can make me one, but I wasn't sure the request was understood. To my surprise the baguette was lovely, crusty slight warm with tuna, cheese and mayo. While waiting I asked the older man behind the counter if the solo cake was "em casa" and he said yes and then we used google translate to understand it was carrot (cenoura) cake with a small chocolate coating on top. I saved that for the boat ride, delicious. And all for €4.45.
The two hour boat trip is a relaxing way to spend the afternoon. I think there were drinks for purchase on board which would have made the experience rather more enjoyable, but I also knew I wanted to hike back up the Valley afterwards. The two hour downloaded audio guide is informative until it stops after one hour, but I learn only 700 people live in the Valley and also the history of some of the quintas, what famous people have stayed at hotels (Ange & Brad get a mention), whose "Tony" was first auctioned at Christie's, who scored a perfect 100 in The Wine Selector. We stop at the half way point to pick up some cyclists, I think at Tua. For those reading to get any tips on Portugal and the Douro, I would recommend going one way from Pinhão to Tua on the train or boat and checking out lunch there and taking the alternate option back. As I mentioned earlier, the Valley from Tua to Pocinho wasn't as exciting.
The hike back to the casa was a bit of a challenge as I'd left my backpack in Porto and I'd been lugging around water and other supplies in a shoulder bag. I nearly make it all the way, but at the end I'm a bit lost. I ask directions from one lone man on the street, that gets me so far, then I ask a couple, the lovely man from Mozambique, working in a neighbouring Quinta, with a big smile, offers to walk me the final 200 metres to the gate. I learn from the owners that he also works for them. He says he very much enjoys living in Portugal and that his wife will permanently join him soon.
My getting lost has become a novelty to Miguel! I am looking forward to wine, my three course meal and the Tony's. Eva (Upwork) checked they could meet my dietary requirements months ago. I confirmed in an email a few weeks before my stay, I remind Miguel when I arrive that I don't eat red meat, pork or lamb, but all the seafoods and birds are ok. This morning I asked him if my dietary requirements would be a problem and he indicated he didn't know what we were having for dinner. Sadly Miguel tries to sell me on the local jamón and when I decline I can have some local cheese instead with the melon (which was wonderful but I ate a lot of cheese for breakfast, so I asked if they could save that for tomorrow's breakfast). He then proudly presents me a plate of pork and says to just try it, with mashed potato and a small salad. There is no alternative. He says something about it and I just responded politely "my mum used to serve me pork as white meat!" It’s followed by a slightly frozen dessert. On the upside I finally get to try a “Tony” that is more than 10 years old, Miguel's 1983, it's better than the 2002 or 2004 I tried the night before. There was no indication of the cost of dinner prior to me coming, how expensive could it be 🤷‍♀️ Until I get the bill, €70 for a whole lots of carbs and sugar 🥴
Ute from Germany (whose husband is missing from dinner as he is unwell) and I catch up and all the other guests are new. She's sympathetic to my dietary requirements as her daughter is a vegetarian. I think she joined my silent protest, as she left her pork as well!
There's a lovely young French couple and her english is beautiful to listen to, if only I could speak english with a french accent! And I meet a young Australian couple, she's from Kenmore and he quietly declares he's from Logan, with embarrassment. They've been living their best life in London for eight years, travelling a lot and potentially looking at relocating to New York as the tax rate is lower! He studied politics at Griffith and now works in marketing for an engineering firm and she works for Deloitte. They bought a small flat near central London and ask me about Australians purchasing property in the EU as there’s barriers for Brits after Brexit. I tell them about the €1 houses in southern Italy. This came up on my Facebook feed and featured on ABC last Sunday I think.
Also a German couple told me about a windmill they stayed in across the water from Lisbon, check out Olá Belém on booking.com
