Yesterday can be split in three parts.
Part 1: We and many others who followed the advice of Bruno to leave early (6:00 o‘clock) got lost already after waypoint 3 in the roadbook. Instead of going south we ended up going northwest back towards the border to Zimbabwe. After a couple of minutes we decided to turn around to find the correct road but missed the turnoff. So after driving in all directions for some 50 km we finally found ourselves on the right track.
Part 2: The correct road turned up to be the nicest drive we have had sofar in Africa: New surface, lush vegetation, winding through the hills up and down in curves and bends. We then ended up on a 50 km stretch of gravel which was not too bad. Again hundreds of kids trying to sell cashews, hot Coke, pineapples and other stuff. At a stop we gave a couple of kids watermelon chewing gum. At first they were very shy but then had big smiles on their faces.
Part 3: The main highway North-South in Mozambique is the N1. We were told it would be bad but after we turned onto it is was beyond anything we had experienced on any of the other rallies before! Right after the turnoff we had to drive across a bridge. The potholes were so big that we could have vanished in one of them easily! We crawled over it at a speed of 1 km/h and it took us 10 minutes to the other side for 150 meters. This continued all the way to Vilankulos with some parts on gravel, broken tarmac and thousands of potholes. Missing one of them meant ending the rally there and then. Even the last 18 km to the very touristy town of Vilankulos was so bad that we had the feeling the car would fall apart. It took a lot of beatings. We arrived in the Bahia Mar Boutique Hotel which was fabulous right at the beach after 10,5 hours on the road. We have now driven from the Atlantic to the Indian Ocean by car. Not bad for old Missy the Merc!
The next 2 days we shall spend at the Anantara Resort on Bazaruto Island. It is supposed to be one of the best properties in Africa at the Indian Ocean.

NJF Design creates thatched resort surrounded by dunes in Mozambique
Thatched beachfront bungalows overlook the Indian Ocean from this hotel named Kisawa Sanctuary in Mozambique, which was built in tandem with a marine conservation centre.
The Kisawa Sanctuary occupies 300 hectares of forest, dunes and beachfront on the southern tip of Benguerra Island, which lies 14 kilometres from the Mozambique mainland.
The Kisawa Sanctuary sits at the southern tip of Benguerra Island
It is the first hospitality project created by entrepreneur Nina Flohr, whose studio NJF Design collaborated with skilled local weavers, thatchers and carpenters to realise the project.
Opened in November 2021, the hotel comprises 22 suites in 12 thatch-topped villas arranged within the dunes.
The residences were built along the beach and in the dunes
"Some lie on the calmer cove side, others shelter in the dunes on the ocean side, yet all are carefully positioned within their own secluded plot; providing maximum privacy and optimum appreciation of the natural environment," said the hotel's team.
Built without the use of heavy machinery, the wooden structures across the site are thatched and clad in a variety of styles based on the regional vernacular.
The bungalows feature woven doors that slide to open up the rooms
Guest bungalows are shaped like long villas and covered with wavy patterned roofs, echoing the form of waves.
Inside they have mottled plaster walls and wooden floors covered with large rugs. Colourfully printed textiles add warmth and variety to the neutral decor.
Neutral decor is accented with patterned textiles and African artefacts
Woven-grass door panels slide across to open up bedrooms and bathrooms to living areas and the outdoors, allowing breezes to pass through.
Timber decking wraps around the bungalows, and forms paths to further terraces that support cabanas and surround swimming pools.
Each bungalow has access to a private beach
Locally made contemporary furnishings are mixed with crafts and artefacts from across Africa to lend an authentic feel to the interiors.
The communal dining spaces across the resort have a similar design treatment, and serve traditional cuisine made from fresh seafood and produce, with a zero-waste policy and using no processed ingredients.
The property includes a wellness centre formed from a cluster of conical volumes
A wellness centre hidden in the dunes is formed from clusters of thatched round volumes with conical tops.
Alongside the hotel, Flohr also launched the Bazaruto Center for Scientific Studies – a research hub for ocean conservation.

Minimalist hotel in Mozambique dominates at AHEAD MEA 2021 awards
"Their parallel operations create a new, symbiotic business model whereby for-profit hospitality contributes directly to non-profit marine science and research," said the team.
Resort guests are able to participate in the research efforts through activities like excursions on the research vessel, which is used for tagging and monitoring local shark populations.
"The pairing of cultural celebration and environmental conservation at Kisawa presents a new, forward-looking narrative for both Mozambique and island escapes," the team said
Local thatchers covered the building using a traditional regional technique
Located in the south-east of the African continent Mozambique is growing in popularity as a tourist destination. Sussurro, a series of private bungalows in the southern part of the country, took home three prizes at the AHEAD MEA 2021 awards.

Top 9 Places to Visit In Africa
Top 9 Places to Visit In Africa
Africa is the second-largest and most beautiful continent in the world. It's home to some of the best tourist attractions that you'd probably love to visit before you die. You're sure to love these places after you read and know more about them. Masai Mara-Kenya Masai Mara is one of the largest wildlife reserves in Africa. It is located in the southwest of Kenya and is also part of the northern section of the Serengeti National Park. The Serengeti National Party is widely known for a large number of large cats, leopards, lions, cheetahs, and more so for the zebra migration to and from the park every year from July to October. The best time to visit Masai Mara is every year between June and August, as it is during this period that wildebeests migrate from Serengeti National Park to Masai Mara in search of water and green pastures. Masai Mara also has the most comfortable camps where visitors can relax and mix nature. Such camps are BaseCamp, Presidents, Olmoran and many others. Victoria Falls, Zambia-Zimbabwe Border This is a waterfall located at the Zambia-Zimbabwe border on the Zambezi River and is well known as the largest waterfall on earth. The Victoria Falls is definitely one of the most beautiful sites in Africa you have to see before you die not only because of its beauty but also because of its extraordinary fall and the abundance of the wildlife around it. You can swim comfortably in the pools on the Zambian side at the height of the drop. Pyramids of Giza-Egypt In Egypt, there are over 100 pyramids and most of them are constructed as tombs to protect the dead pharaohs ' bodies. Whether you’re looking to lounge by a pool, cruise down a waterway or explore the breathtaking expanse of wilderness, the southern region of Africa is a treasure trove of places where you can do just that and more. For couples and honeymooners, there are select spots that are known to help stoke the fires of passion with their splendour and diversion. Though it pains us to have to narrow it down to just a few, these are our picks of the most romantic destinations in Africa and the incredible luxury havens that’ll punctuate your stay.
Cape Town, South Africa
A silhouette of Table Mountain beneath a pink-purple sky Photo credit: Bertus Hanekom
Why:
Cape Town is without a doubt a contender for our favourite African destination. This city packs a lot of experience for a single location – and that’s no exaggeration. For couples, nothing beats a scenic drive down Chapmans Peak, a day whiled away at a wine farm, with rolling hills in the background, a simple but oh so unforgettable Clifton sunset or getting lost in an obscure fishing village (like Kalk Bay, which we love!) before retreating into your choice of luxurious sanctuary.
Where to stay:
MannaBay
Poolside splendour Photo credit: MannaBay
Favoured by those looking for exclusivity, luxury and proximity to the city’s dazzling sites (it’s practically a stone’s throw from Table Mountain – and those Atlantic Ocean views must be seen to be believed!), Mannabay is where excellent service, scrumptious cuisine and tranquillity converge.
Ellerman House
Villa views Photo credit: Ellerman House
A stately haven in the exclusive suburb of Bantry Bay, this utterly lush boutique hotel is famed for having the largest privately-owned art collection in South Africa and a home-away-from-home atmosphere belying its extravagant setting. The in-house villas at Ellerman House, which overlook the city and ocean, are perfect for a cosmopolitan duo looking to explore the region from a lavish base in the city.
Johannesburg, South Africa
A view of Johannesburg’s vibrant city light
Why:
Some might balk at recommending a bustling metropolis for a romantic getaway… luckily, we aren’t that conventional! We know this is where culture, rhythm and history meet to create an immersive experience of any given country. For the couple that’s looking for discovery as well as leisure, Joburg’s incredible art scene, historical sites and nightlife will enthral. If anything, it’s a worthy stop to make before continuing on to the Lowveld region (a mere 3 hours away) for a more quieter bush excursion.
Where to stay:
The Residence
Luscious lounge Photo credit: The Residence
Set in the historic suburb of Houghton, The Residence is a stylish yet inviting sanctuary in the bustling city of Johannesburg. With antique French crystal chandeliers, velvet drapes and Persian rugs, it appeals to those seeking opulence, sophistication and seclusion while taking in the best attractions in the region.
Sabi Sand, South Africa
Nature in all its splendour is shown off at the Sabi Sand
Why:

Day 12 Bush to Beach
4 December 2018
Kms Travelled: 0
Inhassoro
Everyday on holiday so far has been great, but today was definitely one of my highlights.
We organised for a boat to take us Santa Carolina Island for the day, which is the closest island in the Bazaruto Archipelago to Inhassoro. The skipper said he would pick us up at our lodge at 9:00am but we didn’t realise he meant with the boat. In front of our lodge. In the sea. So we had to wade in waist deep water, carrying our backpacks over our heads (me fully clothed. Matt at least had the foresight to wear his costume) and then flop over the side of the rubber dingy in the middle of the ocean. Not the most graceful entrance you’ve ever seen.
So off we sped (and I do mean full steam ahead) into the big blue. Towards the ‘gem of Bazaruto’, with John Denver’s Take me Home, Country Roads distorting on the speakers.
Back in the 60’s a wealthy Portuguese man built a hotel on the island and Santa Carolina became the playground of the rich and famous. That was until it was abandoned during the civil war in the 70’s causing it to fall into disrepair. Now this piece of paradise is part of the Bazaruto Marine National Park and you can visit for just R100 a day (rubber dingy not included).
Our first stop on our island excursion was snorkeling at the aptly named Fish Tank. Now to tell the truth I don’t actually enjoy snorkeling. I have a huge fear of sharks, so I’m usually only in the water for 10 minutes before my phobia gets the best of me, but this place was something else. I kind of stuck next to Matt, first by holding on to his rash vest until I built up confidence, then we just floated next to each other, pointing out all the AMAZING fish and coral we saw.
After the snorkel, we anchored the boat, this time thankfully closer to shore, and searched for the perfect place to set up for the day. Being literally the only people on the island, besides the guards, we were spoiled for choice. Shade, check. Indescribably beautiful view, check. Picnic, check.
We spent the rest of the day exploring the ruins and swimming in the crystal clear blue water, feeling pretty lucky to be living the experience. If you’ve ever heard Bob Dylan’s song titled, Mozambique, this is the place he refers to in the song as Paradise Island. Terrible song, but yes it is definitely a paradise.
