A Slice of History: Napoleon’s House in New Orleans
Once envisioned as the residence of Napoleon Bonaparte, today, Napoleon’s House stands as one of the most unique bars in New Orleans. Originally intended to host the famous military leader, this historic house was transformed into a bar in the 20th century, becoming a popular gathering spot for artists and writers. Despite its name, Napoleon’s House has little direct connection to Bonaparte

Fooduary Day 9: Lemon Bars
While lemons were used in deserts for a way, way long time, they weren't really made into what we call Lemon Bars until they were officially Lemon Bars in 1962. Making the Lemon bars the most recent dessert invention so far. And yes, of course I had to go with a pillbox hat, but I might have gotten carried away with the powdered sugar.

Between 2018-2021 I worked with archaeologist Dr Sophie Hay, Ancient Historian Prof. Andrew Wallace-Hadrill, Director of the Cambridge Schools Classics Project (who make the CLC Latin course!) Caroline Bristow and her gorgeous team, and legendary historical children’s fiction author Caroline Lawrence, to illustrate a novel and ancient history course about the life of Pompeiian freedman Amarantus and his neighbours in Insula 1.9
The story is a year in the life of Amarantus, following the events he experiences, including the devastating earthquake of 63BCE and his manumission (by a certain local natural-history-loving magistrate), the traditions of a Roman life, and the likely inhabitants of the rest of his block, based on the buildings and finds in Insula 1.9.
It acts as an Ancient History/Classical Civilisation (non-language) prequel to the Latin Caecilius stories (CLC Book 1) and there are some Caecilius-themed visual easter eggs 😁
The course has been designed for even non-specialists to be able to pick up and teach, entirely for free, to help bring Ancient History/Classics into schools.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We made the images in grayscale so they could be cheaply printed and reproduced in PoD books/PDFs for schools, but made some images in full colour for the website and book cover to show the diversity of the Pompeiian world. They’re all based on archaeological evidence and research and each one took hours of discussion and argument (and occasional paper models) to get right. (And I’m proud to say my rebuilding of some ruined structures like the Herculaneum Gate has been approved by other Pompeii experts, like the Cooleys 😁)
The entire book and course is massively researched and based on archaeological findings, and is FREE on the CSCP website: https://CambridgeAmarantus.com/home
Or you can buy the book PoD via these links: https://www.cambridgescp.com/array/buy-book

Bonus Roman Chickens (the precursors to my Roman History Chickens series!): the cockfighters Odysseus and Polyphemus! (And yes cockfighting is terrible and I’m glad we don’t have it any more)

I wanted so badly to like Don't Want You Like A Best Friend to spite the puritanical pearl-clutchers online who are mad about [checks notes] the sapphic lovers, who are not related and who met as adults, Parent Trap-ing their way into becoming stepsisters because it's 1857 and there's no other way to legally codify their relationship AND reduce the pressure on the poor one to marry a rich man
but tragically I noped out at like...5% completion because the anachronistic dialogue (with no clear stylistic choice behind it) and spotty understanding of 1850s culture were just too much

Live and work in a cute 1850 bar with an apt. on top in Hudson, New York. The apt. has 2bds, 1.5ba, $1.395M and it's already under contract.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This could be a very cozy place with some kind of theme decor.
Tumblr media
The front room is a little tight, so it has to look special.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Here's another room in the back.
Tumblr media
Love this wall.
Tumblr media
Full commercial kitchen- oh, look, a ghost chef.
Tumblr media
The kitchen has big windows looking out at the outdoor patio.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
This is really nice. What a great little business.
Tumblr media
Now, we're in the living quarters. Look at the architectural details and that chandelier.
Tumblr media
Lovely little alcove.
Tumblr media
For an older home, this is very cheerful and light.
Tumblr media
Wow, look at this. I don't know why they don't show the middle room. Could it be b/c it's the 2nd bedroom?
Tumblr media
Cute vintage kitchen has a stained glass window and an original sink. This is a pretty large eat-in kitchen.
Tumblr media
Beautiful colored glass door opens to a deck. More beautiful woodwork in here.
Tumblr media
This is very nice.
Tumblr media
The primary bedroom looks looks like it opens to a covered porch.
Tumblr media
I poked around and found an older photo of the building. Looks like it was a used furniture store.

age swap au fic where everything is the same except that peter/spidey’s group switches with tony/iron man’s.
peter takes tony’s place. mj takes pepper’s. ned takes rhodey’s etc etc. “i am spider-man” press conference, tony sneaking out as iron man/becoming peter’s intern, may helping run the company, howard being a dick/owning a small business or smth — you get the gist
iron son and spider-dad i guess? tony (not lacking in intelligence) wanting to be as kind as peter and terrified of losing another good father figure in his life. peter “oh my fucking god kid if you’re not gonna stop at least let me show you the ropes” parker meeting tony during an expo/tour.
i want to see teen tony in high school desperately trying to be normal with his dad on his back about MIT and his tiny business or something. i want to see adult peter running a company with his besties and being loved as spider-man and trying so hard to help out some traumatized and angry kid in a rocket powered tin can.
this has tv show vibes to me in the best way

I realize this might be a slightly odd ask, but… Out of curiosity, what sort of foods do you think Machete would be fond of? And do you think they’d differ noticeably from when he was young vs once he’d grown older?
He's a fussy eater. He rarely eats for pleasure and dislikes being seen dining in company, but attends formal dinners and banquets if invited, since declining without a very good reason would be at best rude and at worst a devastating faux pas. He prefers fowl dishes over red meat and greatly dislikes sea food (which is just peachy since this is the Mediterranean). Pasta seems to be already a well established part of the cuisine at that point, maybe he's into that. For the most of his life he's eaten rather simple foods so he finds bland soups and broths very safe and comforting. Pomegranates are his fruit of choice, he doesn't have much of a sweet tooth but enjoys candied apricots and figs on occasion.
He's exceptionally bad at holding his liquor, and he can't stand the feelings of unpredictability, disorientation, unsafeness and potential loss of control that being intoxicated causes in him. Unfortunately, drinking plain water was very risky and uncommon, it was contaminated and unsanitary more often than not, especially in population centers. Generally the main drinks you'd consume through the day were diluted wine and beer/ale (this was the case for children as well). Machete tends to prefer wine, which he waters down heavily, and sometimes has it flavored with spices, herbs, honey or sugar. Having even a little bit of alcohol in the mix would kill at least a portion of the bacteria (not that the concept was known at the time, people believed many illnesses were caused by tainted air and foul smells, I mean fair enough, if your water is filthy it probably smells bad too).
(Fun fact, apparently Ancient Romans had more or less perfected the art of winemaking but by the Middle Ages a lot of the techniques had been lost. During the Renaissance wine was generally very low quality and the way it was fermented and stored (making the switch from sealed ceramic amphora of the Antiquity to those iconic wooden barrels) meant it would only stay good for a year at best and the taste would start to deteriorate within the first couple of months. Vintage wines weren't a thing, the best stuff was fresh. Apparently European wine was pretty bad for hundreds of years and would only start to improve again around 1800s. Or at least that's what I've gathered, I could be wrong, I'm not a wine expert).
Europe hadn't quite adopted tea yet and he narrowly missed the time coffee began to spread to his corner of the world (I bet he would've loved both of those, with the help of caffeine he could've been twice as much of a jittery sleepless wreck). I've read that people would distill sage and drink the resulting concoction with hot water to create this very tea-like minty drink, that sounds like something he'd like.

Remarkable Discovery at the Tower of David: A 2,000-year-old bronze coin featuring King Antiochus IV Epiphanes, known for his role in the Maccabean 3-year long Bar Kokhba Revolt (the Jews vs the Romans in 133-136 AD), has been unearthed within Jerusalem's historic citadel.
Found by chief conservator Orna Cohen during routine maintenance, this coin showcases Antiochus with a crown and a goddess with a scarf on its reverse. This surprising find at a site thought to have been fully excavated reveals a tangible piece of the tumultuous Hasmonean era, linking the Jews, once again, directly to biblical history, and proving their indigenous connection to Judea.

Every time I think about Lords of Fortune and their cultural sensitivity I have to go 'Don't think about it' like that Portal 2 scene, because I get too invested trying to understand the logic behind it and eventually short circuit.
