'Farzi': Impact and Influence on the Indian Digital Entertainment Industry
Tumblr media
The Indian digital entertainment industry has come a long way since the inception of the first web series introduced to the masses. As the online space expanded, creators pushed the envelope and brought forth a variety of genres, concepts, and digital storytelling formats. Among its many pioneering creations, 'Farzi', a daring blend of crime and comedy, has emerged as a game-changer. This article delves into the impact and influence 'Farzi' has had on the Indian digital entertainment industry.
A Fusion of Genres: Breaking Stereotypes Traditionally, Indian digital entertainment has witnessed web series adhering to set genres, with clear distinctions between comedy, drama, and crime. However, 'Farzi' challenged this norm by blending comedy and crime to create a genre-defying narrative. Its success demonstrated to the industry that such genre fusions could be artistically and commercially viable, encouraging creators to explore new combinations and think beyond the traditional classifications.
Ushering in Fresh Talent The makers of 'Farzi' prioritized casting actors who could genuinely embody the complexities of their roles, irrespective of their popularity or stardom. This approach not only allowed fresh talent to emerge but also highlighted the importance of prioritizing substance over status when casting. As a result, the Indian digital entertainment industry has become more receptive to new faces, providing opportunities for aspiring actors to showcase their skills in distinctive productions.
Elevating the Quality of Content With its compelling narrative and high production values, 'Farzi' has set a new benchmark in quality within the Indian digital entertainment space. The web series proved that gripping, well-produced content could garner both critical acclaim and commercial success, leading to a surge in quality-driven production. The focus has shifted towards intriguing concepts, skilled writing, and captivating visuals—factors that resonate with the evolving tastes of modern audiences.
Inspiring Creative Storytelling 'Farzi's impact on the industry goes beyond its novel integration of crime and comedy. The series encouraged creators to think outside the box and push their creative limits. This effect can be observed in the form of more diverse narrative styles and themes emerging in subsequent web series. 'Farzi' proved that taking risks in storytelling could pay off, emboldening creators to bring forth unconventional ideas and evolve the digital entertainment space further.
Capturing Global Attention The success of 'Farzi' not only made waves within the Indian digital entertainment industry but also garnered attention internationally. By creating content that not only appeals to Indian audiences but also resonates with global viewers, 'Farzi' has contributed to the expansion of the industry’s reach. This has paved the way for Indian digital content creators to consider the potential for wider, cross-border appeal in their narratives and productions.
In conclusion, 'Farzi's unique blend of crime and comedy has had a significant impact on the Indian digital entertainment industry, breaking genre stereotypes, promoting new talent, raising the bar in terms of content quality, fueling creative storytelling, and expanding the industry's global reach. As viewers eagerly await more groundbreaking content in the digital space, it's clear that 'Farzi' has set the stage for even bolder, more innovative web series to come.

Since Hollywood is on strike (take down the greedy studio bastards!) and I saw a post calling people to check out non-American media - let's start a rec list!
as far as I know these are on Netflix (I don't have any other streaming subscriptions at the moment so I can't rec anything from the others) and might be available online *elsewhere* with a little internet magic.
La casa de papel (also known as Money Heist) A group of criminals are robbing the Spanish Mint - chaos ensues. I think everyone and their grandmother has seen this by now but still. I loved this show - I stayed up until stupid o'clock because i HAD to know what was going to happen next and how they were going to get out of the shit they'd gotten themselves into. 5 seasons. La casa de las flores (also known as House of flowers) Think telenovelas/soap operas. It's unhinged, it's funny, it's a little queer (mlm and wlw). Long lost children, affairs, Big Family Secrets, drag queens - what more could you ask for?? 3 seasons, a special episode (la case de las flores el funeral), and a film (la casa de las flores la pelicula)
Anne+ (film + 1 of 2 seasons tv show - it originated as a webseries so the episodes are pretty short but Netflix deleted the second season) The life and loves of Anne - a queer millennial living in Amsterdam.
Ek Ladki Ko Dekha Toh Aisa Laga Queer (wlw) Bollywood film. A friend recced it to me once. I had never watched a Bollywood film in my life, didn't know anything about the genre, but still enjoyed it. It's a drama. Don't go into this thinking it's the Hindi version of the L word though or you will be disappointed.
Shubh Mangal Zyada Saavdhan Another queer (mlm) bollywood film my friend recced me. It's a little more "blatant" than the one I mentioned before (this one is from 2020, the other 2019) and it's more of a comedy This one is not on Netlfix - it used to be on Amazon prime but I don't know if it still is. I found it *elsewhere* though with better subtitles than on amazon.
Kalifat This is a Swedish show about a young girl getting pulled into the world of extremist Islam, a young mother who already is in the kalifat (and wants to leave) and a (female) journalist trying to help her. It's intense but really good - and kind of scary how easy it is fall down an extremist internet rabbit hole.
Meskina Dutch romantic comedy about a Dutch/Moroccan woman in her 30s who is still single and her family play matchmaker. Featuring one of the funniest women in the Netherlands (Soundos el Ahmadi - who is also a stand up comedian and her shows are on netflix too)
Isi & Ossi German romantic comedy film about a rich girl who wants to go to culinary school but her father won't let her, so she pretends to be in a relationship with a poor guy who is also a boxer to piss off her parents.
Family business Completely unhinged French comedy series about a guy who turns his family's butchershop into a shop that sells weed - because he heard weed was about to be legalised in France. Really funny - 3 seasons.
Lupin French crime/heist show - but from the POV of the thief. Based on/inspired by the Arsène Lupin books. With Omar Sy. IT'S SO GOOD! 2 seasons, season 3 coming in October.
Dirty Lines Dutch (kind of) comedy about a woman who takes a job at a sex phone line.
reblog and add your own!

Wahaj Ali to the Rescue…
I have been in a Kdrama slump having barely watched 3 dramas so far. Dropped 2 and one is ongoing. I have been watching a lot of crime and dark series in British and American TV. Farzi is the only Hindi series I have watched in this new year and I loved it 😍
I have been craving good series from the subcontinent and asked a few folks on twitter to recommend Pakistani dramas. I haven’t watched them in last 7-8 years. So after 3 dramas, I started watching Tere Bin and got totally bowled over by Wahaj Ali’s Murtasim!
Tumblr media
So I hunted for more dramas of his and am currently watching Mujhe Pyaar Hua Tha which is also currently airing and his 2021 drama Ishq Jalebi. I’m so impressed by his acting, screen presence, charisma and charm with a capital C! The current craze behind him is reminiscent of the craze behind Fawad Khan a decade ago when people discovered Humsafar and Zindagi Gulzar Hain. There is none like Fawad and he is an eternal favourite, but I’m totally falling for each and ever character that Wahaj is essaying with such finesse and panache.
Be it the proud and arrogant but hopelessly in love Murtasim
Tumblr media
Be it the soft hearted, reticent Saad who harbours one-sided love for Maheer (literally watching MHPT only for him, cause the show is an utter disaster of a melodrama that reminds me why I don’t watch many series from the sub continent)
Tumblr media
Or my favourite character of his right now - Basim from Ishq Jalebi. Basim is so flawed - he is immature, impulsive, stubborn, a tad selfish, sometimes a man child and even carries an inferiority complex but once he realises he is in love with Bela , he fights for it like no one’s business. His comic timing and dialogue delivery is impeccable - his dynamic with his parents is best part of the drama after his lovely, soft chemistry with the female lead Mahida. Her soft spoken, caring , mature Bela is the perfect foil to Basim. The drama is also so wholesome with fun characters that there isn’t a single moment of boredom! It reminded me of my favourite Marathi show Eka Lagnachi Goshta (The story of a marriage).
Tumblr media
Wahaj Ali is playing 3 absolutely different characters in the 3 dramas of his that am watching simultaneously and I cannot believe it’s the same actor. The mannerisms, the voice modulation, the gait , the look is completely different. That’s the hallmark of a great actor ! Colin Firth, Fawad Khan, Kim Seon Ho were my biggest actor crushes that gave the most epic characters in history of TV viewing and now Wahaj has entered this elite list. Actors when they are on my screen, I can’t take my eyes off the screen.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Wahaj Ali has saved my 2023 TV viewing cause I have seen his filmography and his drama arc is so similar to Fawad’s that I can’t wait to watch his dramas. Fawad’s Ashar & Zaroon, Wahaj’s Murtasim and Basim are all heavily flawed characters and yet both these actors have made us ladies swoon and fall in love with them thanks to their amazing acting abilities and effortless performance. It’s an added bonus that his voice , his mischievous smile and the look in his eyes when he is in love is totally swoon worthy!
Tumblr media
So until I find the right Kdrama again, this space will be reserved to obsess over the awesomeness of Wahaj Ali 😉

Remembering #Sadhana Shivdasani, one of the most incredible and graceful actresses of Hindi cinema, on her 82nd birth anniversary (02/09).
Sadhana was a prominent figure in Hindi cinema and is remembered as one of its most talented actresses. Known for her striking beauty and fashion-forward style, she earned the nickname "The Mystery Girl" due to her roles in a series of suspense thrillers directed by Raj Khosla in the mid-1960s.
Originally from Karachi, Sadhana moved to Bombay with her family at the age of 7, during the partition of India. She first appeared in an uncredited role in the film Shree 420 (1955) before being mentored by director Sashadhar Mukherjee. Her breakout role came in Love In Simla (1960), where her unique hairstyle became so popular it was dubbed the "Sadhana Cut." She continued to build her reputation as a leading lady in films such as Parakh (1960), Hum Dono (1961), Asli-Naqli (1962), Ek Musafir Ek Haseena (1962), Mere Mehboob (1963), Woh Kaun Thi? (1964), Arzoo (1965), Waqt (1965), Mera Saaya (1966), and Anita (1967).
In the late 1960s, Sadhana faced health challenges due to hyperthyroidism, prompting her to temporarily step away from acting. She traveled to Boston for medical treatment and made a comeback in 1969 with two successful films, Ek Phool Do Mali and Intaqam. In 1974, she ventured into directing with the crime thriller Geetaa Mera Naam, after which she gradually retreated from acting. Her last on-screen appearance was in Ulfat Ki Nayi Manzilein (1994). She was honored with the IIFA Lifetime Achievement Award in 2002.
Sadhana was married to R.K. Nayyar, the director of her film Love in Simla, on March 7, 1966. She was hospitalized at Hinduja Hospital on December 24, 2015, and passed away the following day.

Kohrra Review
Tumblr media
July 22, 2023
by Inakshi Chandra-Mohanty
Seven years back, we got a glimpse of the downtrodden state of Punjab through the film, Udta Punjab. The drugs, the violence, the chaos. It was a stark departure from the gorgeous pinds, ganne ke khet, and an overall romanticized version of Punjab we had grown accustomed to through the movies. We still see those sprawling fields in Kohrra, but now there is an ominous air over it, a fog of criminality that refuses to disappear. Netflix’s latest series is a crime thriller that follows two police officers, Balbir Singh (Suvinder Vicky) and Amarpal Garundi (Barun Sobti), as they attempt to solve the murder of a groom, just days prior to his wedding. Their personal and professional lives intertwine as the search for the culprit reveals much about the dismal state of society.
It is no surprise that one of the writers of Udta Punjab is a co-creator on this series. Sudip Sharma, also known for Amazon’s critically acclaimed show, Paatal Lok, has the knowledge and writing prowess to explore the gritty depths of Punjab. Along with director Randeep Jha, and co-writers, Gunjit Chopra and Diggi Sisodia, they create a universe that relies heavily on its atmosphere. From the Punjabi dialect spoken by the actors to the stark cinematography, they strive for authenticity.
Though it gets straight into the main plot, the crime being discovered within the first few minutes of the first episode, the story is slow to unravel. The exposition of the characters happens over the course of the series as each episode reveals a little more about their personal lives. The narrative is predictable. But, there is an unpredictability within that predictability. Many aspects of the mystery are easily guessed early on, but they are just loose threads. How these threads are woven together to form this murderous situation is the suspense we relish.
But what sets Kohrra apart, is the way it uses the mystery as background fodder for a poignant story of parental abuse and generational trauma. We see a whole generation of youngsters stifled due to the misplaced frustration of their elders. Happy suffers the inattention of his father, leading him down a treacherous path. Garundi is victim to the emotional blackmail of his brother and sister in law. Nimrat faces mental torture at the hands of her rigid father. Paul feels suppressed by the extreme beliefs of his father and as a result, Liam struggles due to Paul’s pain. The common thread here is the existence of parental figures who are insistent on imposing their beliefs from a generation of the past on their children of today. It is a bleak commentary on familial structures in modern society amid the chaotic crime scene in Punjab.
The brilliant writing along with the great performances bring these characters and themes to life. Suvinder Vicky and Barun Sobti do a commendable job leading the show. It’s remarkable to see how Barun Sobti imbibes this rustic Punjabi character, so different from any role he has portrayed thus far. This may be his fourth release of the year, but it’s definitely his best performance of them all. Suvinder Vicky is a revelation. Despite a career lasting almost two decades, with a few forays into Hindi entertainment, he is largely unknown to an Indian audience outside Punjab. This series has not only brought to light his nuanced acting, but has also catapulted him into belated stardom. While these two actors lead the way, it is the supporting cast that keeps the series afloat. Harleen Sethi is terrific in the role of Balbir’s disgruntled, angry and depressed daughter, Nimrat. Rachel Shelly beautifully portrays Clara’s agony of losing a son in a nation foreign to her. And there are many more actors that do a tremendous job bringing emotion and authenticity to their roles.
As the series comes to a close, I find myself wondering, are we supposed to like these characters? Barring Nimrat and Clara, my heart doesn’t ache for anyone. Instead, I feel disgusted by some of these people and their despicable actions. But, I believe that is the intention. These grey characters are not meant to be likeable. They are instead meant to be seen as an imperfect part of an imperfect society. A society that is slowly drowning in its own evils. But, as they each have their own form of redemption, we experience satisfaction, that in this burning society, there is a glimmer of hope. Just like its characters, Kohrra isn’t perfect. It is slow, it is predictable. But as the mystery takes a backseat, an important commentary on society emerges that makes the series a riveting watch.
