When Algy woke up on Christmas morning he was astonished to find himself in a glorious Christmas tree full of sparkling decorations and a thousand twinkling lights. There was no sign of his magic pumpkin, but the fluffy Christmas stocking which he had hung in the bare tree the night before was positively bulging, with exciting looking objects sticking out of its top…
Algy was quite overwhelmed, for he had found the light and warmth in the heart of the winter darkness at last… and it was in his very own home…
Algy wishes you all a Merry Christmas and very happy holidays, and hopes that Santa Claus has visited you in the night too. Algy sends lots of fluffy Christmas hugs to you all
Merry Christmas! 🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄🤗🎄

In the tiny Scottish hamlet of Sunnyville (more properly known as Achmothogair) Christmas is celebrated in a traditional way, for time moves slowly in remote rural areas and most of the few remaining residents have left their youth far behind, so they tend to indulge in nostalgia. The days of mid-winter are short and dim at this extreme northerly latitude, and made even darker by almost unbroken cloud cover; life in Sunnyville during the festivities is therefore spent mainly indoors, centred around hearth and home, and illuminated by such artificial means as they can muster.

I wish I could get one to match my highland cow painting, but they’re a bit pricey.

Algy extracted the presents from his Christmas stocking in amazement, and with great delight, for Father Christmas had not only brought him a nice warm scarf to keep his fluffy neck warm in the wild west Highland winter, and a tiny puppet to play with, but also a wonderful painting set of his very own, complete with watercolour paints, paint brushes and a very smart little sketchbook – and, in accordance with tradition, a wee apple, clementine and walnut nestled into the toe of the stocking.
As Algy gazed at all his presents, he hoped very much that all his friends around the world who celebrated Christmas had also received lovely gifts, but he knew that sadly there would be many people who would be cold and hungry and lonely today, and he thought of an old Christmas carol, hoping very much that some kind friend would help those folk in need:
Good King Wenceslas look’d out, On the Feast of Stephen; When the snow lay round about, Deep, and crisp, and even: Brightly shone the moon that night, Though the frost was cruel, When a poor man came in sight, Gath’ring winter fuel. “Hither page and stand by me, If thou know’st it, telling, Yonder peasant, who is he? Where and what his dwelling?” “Sire, he lives a good league hence. Underneath the mountain; Right against the forest fence, By Saint Agnes’ fountain.” “Bring me flesh, and bring me wine, Bring me pine-logs hither: Thou and I will see him dine, When we bear them thither.” Page and monarch forth they went, Forth they went together; Through the rude wind’s wild lament, And the bitter weather. “Sire, the night is darker now, And the wind blows stronger; Fails my heart, I know now how, I can go no longer.” “Mark my footsteps, good my page; Tread thou in them boldly; Thou shalt find the winter’s rage Freeze thy blood less coldly.” In his master’s steps he trod, Where the snow lay dinted; Heat was in the very sod Which the Saint had printed. Therefore, Christian men, be sure, Wealth or rank possessing, Ye who now will bless the poor, Shall yourselves find blessing.
[Algy is singing Good King Wenceslas by the 19th century English writer and priest John Mason Neale.]

After a great deal of heaving and ho-ing, and huffing and puffing, and to-ing and fro-ing with ropes and step ladders – but exercising an admirable restraint with regard to cursing and swearing – the residents of the tiny Scottish hamlet known as Sunnyville (but more properly referred to as Achmothogair) eventually managed to re-erect their fallen Christmas tree.
And on the third Sunday of Advent they gathered together to switch on the lights… upon which they sighed a deep, collective sigh of satisfaction, while keeping their tiny fingers crossed that no further Atlantic storms would trouble them during the festive season.
