When asked if you could quilt a two sided quilt, you make it happen!

Knitting a freehand bag and started wondering how often people even use patterns, anyway. So--how often do you use a pattern when you make things ? This include knitting/crochet/sewing/weaving/nalbinding/bobbin lace/tatting/etc but also things like woodworking, cooking, and baking. If you want to just pick the thing you do most often that's fine.
I personally do not use patterns as I find them far more confusing than just figuring out the construction of an item and simply making it. I do very occasionally browse ravelry for inspiration but have downloaded maybe 2. In the 5 or so years since I joined. And have followed exactly 1, which I modified every single aspect of. In my defense, dyslexia.

I’ve been working on this for so long now, and it’s finally finished!
My previous sewing kit was getting too small and I needed an upgrade, so I started working on the bee cross stitch to incorporate and then came across the patches. I was tossing up which to use and then decided, why not make it double sided?
So after many hours of hand quilting it is finally finished and I now have room for all of my equipment!

Craft Notes 11/12
Greetings! I finally finished that darn blanket. I’m never knitting a fingering weight blanket again. Let’s ignore the fact that I have one in progress. Anyways, I thought that I would share a round up of my wips and my plans for the rest of the year.
Tumblr media
the remaining fingering weight blanket - no plans to finish this year
Tumblr media
the denim quilts - no plans to finish this year
Tumblr media
Musselburgh #19 - would like to finish by the end of the year
Tumblr media
baby socks to donate - would like to finish by the end of the month
Tumblr media
and my next cast on will be some type of top down raglan sweater for my daughter. She wants the body in the charcoal and the sleeves striped but narrow stripes on one sleeve with wider stripes on the other sleeve. - I plan to start this after I am done with the baby socks .
Tumblr media
my next cross stitch project to start in December

There was an estate sale on our street today, so my roommate and I walked over to take a look around and see if there were any good fiber craft materials around. And boy howdy were there and now I'm emotional. The woman that lived there was obviously a quilter, because there were two absolutely stunning hand quilted quilts hanging on a blanket ladder in the living room for sale. If I had $200 I would have taken one home because her stitches were so tiny and straight and her piecing was impeccable. And there was a box of crocheted doilys and pillow case edging, and another box of vintage glass buttons, and another box of embroidery floss, and another box of embroidery practice sheets and fabric. I ended up buying her sewing kit basket because I saw some lovely needle books from the 40s in there at first glance.
And in the process of going through her kit, I found bird feathers and small smooth pebbles and little bits and bobs she had tucked away for some reason or another. She kept her straight pins in an old prescription bottle from 1969. She strung all her safety pins onto a kilt pin. She had 6 packs of upholstery needles in her kit. I have no idea who this woman was, but I know she went to Paris in 1971 and brought home a hotel sewing kit and took the time to write down the dates of her trip.
And then I found her chunk of bees wax and got so so emotional. She'd obviously used that particular chunk for countless projects and it looks like a flower from all the times she's pulled floss over it. I'm holding all these parts of this woman's life and I'll never know her or her story, but I do get to marvel at her tools and her work.

We went to the big garage sale yesterday and this one guy had an absolutely beautiful set of pink depression glass and I wanted it SO BAD but I kept looking at each item like... what would I even do with this? They're too pretty to use and where would I display them? Like here's my depression glass ice cream sundae/soda float glass (I was considering that one so bad) its next to my collection of barbies! Or my connection of Cherished Teddies sgdgdgdg like my mom has a small cabinet for knickknacks but it would still look so out of place 😩
Plus since it was an individual guy selling it and I had a bag full of shit to ring up at the front counter table, it felt weird sggddgd
But it was so pink and so pretty 😭 I wanted the whole set bc it looked so stunningly perfect as a set all together but god I dont have that kinda room for that sgdggdgdgd and again too nice to use 😥

The goal: mimic the brushstrokes
Found a pic on a college website that showed the paint and brushstrokes well. There were a lot of colors of paint in those strokes. So my brain was like ok, build up the colors of the paint too. And then later my brain was like what were you thinking building up all that thread. And then when today after the fourth additional color, my brain was like you gotta stop now or you never will. Then when I pulled it off the frame and stepped back, my brain (with a headache today) says see, told you.
Now to take something to make it stop hurting, and then bind and deliver…

I've been on a crafting kick lately. So I bought a few craft kits from a local museum to 1. try them and 2. bonus support museum!
My first quilt (mini quilt kit), measures about 10" x 10".
And if you put it on the floor, and have a cat = instant cat trap.
Made by 'You Can Learn Kits', if you are interested see if you can pick it up from your local museum (probably more likely from your local historical museum). If you can't find one, you can order from Old Sturbridge Village's store.
Not bad for a starter kit, included instructions which covered general topics like threading a needle, doing a running stitch, right side of fabric, back tacking, and vocab like 'seam'. I'd say pretty good if you have minimal sewing experience.
And if written instructions aren't your thing, they have videos, didn't check those out but (https://www.youtube.com/@youcanlearnkits2682).
There was also some bonus/extra fabric from the border that I saved and used to make accessories for the next kit I worked on.

CRAFT NOTES: June 19th - 25th
Greetings! So, I got tired of posting small updates every single day so I am going to try to do a weekly round up of the projects that I am working on.
READING: A Court of Silver Flames by Sarah J. Maas
WEDNESDAY: I managed to start my second sock and then I decided that I need to knit a fingering weight sweater with the yarn that I dyed the other day. It seriously couldn’t wait another day. 😂 Never mind the fact that it is currently over 90° F. I am knitting the Alberta Summer top by Sandra Buzza. It’s my first time knitting a sweater with a circular yolk.
Tumblr media
THURSDAY: More progress on both projects.
Tumblr media
FRIDAY & SATURDAY: I finished my 174th pair of socks (I will post the details soon) and I decided to knit a couple of yarn cozies with leftover scrap yarn. I love the red and blue one. It makes me think of a sock monkey for some reason. (the yarn cozies will have their own fo post too).
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SUNDAY: I discovered that I made a pretty big mistake so I frogged the whole sweater project and then I started it over. I love the results so far.
Tumblr media
MONDAY: New cast on day. I love the color combination. My rows on my sweater are getting really long. I only knit one row today.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
TUESDAY: a small amount of progress on both projects and an ice tea because it’s hot.
Tumblr media
CROSS STITCH: I spent about 5 hours working on this project this week while listening to audiobooks. It is slowly progressing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
SEWING: I have sewn up another 10 quilt blocks this week giving me approximately 40 more to sew. I’m not sure if they will all go into this quilt or the next one. The plan is to make one for each family member so there will be a few more after this one.
