Sky High(1)
(Harry Styles x Fem!Reader)
Summary: You take Harry to do something he never would have thought he’d do.
A/N: In honor of Balloon Fiesta season(aka my fav time of year) ITS TIME FOR BALLOONRRY! This has literally been spinning around in my brain since last December so yeah… enjoy.
Warnings: Judgmental family member, mentions of body shaming(only once), fear of heights, mentions of traumatic childhood and abusive parent (not in detail), Mentioned aged gap but not specified.
>>>————————————->
London, Wednesday
Harry smiles as he shuffles around the house, throwing things in his suitcase.
“Hey Harry, don’t pack your puffer-.”
“Y/N, you said it was gonna be cold and that I should expect snow!”
“Yes but- your puffer is cotton. Which can catch on fire. And we’ll be operating a propane burner. And don’t pack your wool gloves either-. You know what, finish packing your clothes and then we’ll go get you everything else. I need new gloves anyways.”
He rolls his eyes and kisses my forehead before turning back to our dresser.
This year, Harry is joining me for a hot air balloon rally that I crew for with some of my family every year. I have never seen him more excited for something so boring.
After he finishes, he drags me out the door immediately and we head down to the shops.
“We need to go to Workwear. They should have everything.”
He nods and grips my hand as we walk down the chilly streets. Harry grabs the door and we head inside. Harry bites his lip, a bit reluctant at his unfamiliar atmosphere.
“Come on, dork. Let’s go find you a jacket.”
I manage to find a nylon and polyester jacket that he’s satisfied with, though he complains that he’d rather his puffer.
“I know- you can pack it but you can’t wear it when we’re crewing or Bob will never let us hear the end of it.”
I grab a few pairs of nylon gloves before dragging him over to the shoes.
“Boots, love? Really?”
I snort and nod my head.
“We’re carrying heavy equipment. Your Vans won’t work. You could drop something and seriously hurt your foot. Hence the steel-toed boots. And they’ll keep you warm. Trust me.”
He nods and we head to the checkout, excitement rushing through us at our week ahead.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Thursday
As soon as we land in Albuquerque, we quickly pick up our bags and our rental car before getting on the road. We get settled on the highway and Harry turns on cruise control, taking my hand in his while driving with the other. My hands start to shake more and I sigh.
“You’re shaking Y/N. Why are you shaking?”
I let out another sigh and I look at him.
“My father might be there… And my brother and sister. You haven’t met them… And honestly I don’t really talk to them. So I guess I’m just nervous. And you’ve never met my granny or her husband- And since you’re helping crew for Andrew… I don’t know… Just a lot going on.”
He lifts my hand up and kisses the back of it before he squeezes it. His eyes remain on the road but his words make me tear up.
“I know you’re not particularly looking forward to all of that- But I’m here. I’m always here. And your mum. You know she won’t let him do anything to you. I will be the perfect Angel that I always am-.”
I snort and he gives me a playful side eye.
“As I was saying- everything will be just fine. Okay? So let’s have fun. I’m definitely excited. And happy to see your mum again.”
He smiles and squeezes my hand again before turning his attention back to the road. After about 2 hours, Harry gets off at the exit and it only takes us a minute to get to our hotel. He parks next to my mom’s car and we get out. She gets out of her car and rushes over to Harry, pulling him into a hug as he laughs and smiles.
“Oh my god, Harry! I’ve missed you! Look at you! You look great!”
He laughs and hugs my mom back for a minute before they pull away.
“I’m great, Kelly. How are you?”
She nods and gives him a smile before she pulls me into a hug as well.
“Hi my babies.”
I smile and hug her, rolling my eyes at Harry as he laughs.
“Hi mama.”
She pulls away and shoves her hands in her pockets.
“You both doing okay? Taking care of each other? You look good but you know I worry.”
I smile and nod.
“We’re fine. Harry is very excited.”
Harry nods and wraps an arm around my waist, his smile clear as day. We stand by the car, talking to my mom for a few minutes when my grandmother pulls up. Her husband gets out of the truck and gets her walker out, setting it up as she gets out. Not ready to face her, I drag Harry inside to check in and get our room keys.
We collect our keys and walk up the stairs to our room.
“Love, I really don’t think you need to avoid her-.”
“You know how frustrating she is! The woman flat out told me when I was 16 that it was my fault that my mother was depressed! Because somehow I could control who she slept with to create me!”
He wraps his arms around me and kisses my head.
“I know love, I know. But you know your mum won’t let her do anything. Did you pack your meds?”
I huff and just shrug. He holds me for a minute, rubbing my back before he decides we need to go downstairs and get our bags. He drags me down the stairs and out to the car where, surprise surprise, my grandmother is. I elect to ignore her, opening the back to start grabbing bags. My mom pulls us over to them as I huff in frustration.
“Mom, this is Harry, Y/N’s boyfriend. Harry, this is my mom, May and her husband Andrew. You’ll meet Bob later. He’ll be crewing with us.”
Harry shakes my granny’s hand as well as Andrew’s when my grandmother adverts her gaze to me.
“Sweetie, what did I say about all that eating you do? It’s not good for your figure. I mean look at you-. And did you get that job I sent you the link to?”
I sigh and shake my head, squeezing Harry’s hand to calm me down before answering her.
“Granny, that job was in Arizona. I live in London, remember? And I have a job. I work at a publishing firm, remember? And I like it.”
Before she can say respond, Andrew interrupts her.
“How about we all get settled in our rooms? We’ll meet back here in the parking lot at 6:30 to go check in?”
We all nod and head inside. Before we enter our room, my mom puts her hand on my shoulder, and I turn to face her.
“You two go ahead and have to time with each other for the night. We don’t all need to go to check in and I know you’re not exactly ready to see him. I’ll text you what time we need to meet in the morning.”
Harry smiles and hugs my mom and I let out a heavy sigh.
“Thank you, Kelly. I’ll take care of our girl. She’ll be fine.”
My mom kisses my forehead and squeezes my shoulder before she heads into her room and disappears behind the door. Harry pulls me into our room and pulls me into a tight hug as soon as the door closes. He rubs my back and I let out a sigh.
“How about we go on a walk after we get settled in love? Think that would help? Or are you in the stuff your face with sweets until you pass out kind of mood?”
I shake my head as I hang up my jacket.
“I’m actually in the take a hot shower and then cuddle with my hot boyfriend until I fall asleep kind of mood.”
Harry flashes me a bright smile and hugs me as he hangs up his jacket.
“You take your shower. I’ll run to the vending machines and get some sweets. When you’re done, we can head to bed.”
He kisses my forehead and leaves the room. I grab some sweats and a soft top before heading into the shower.
By the time I’m done, my hair in a wet braid and teeth brushed as I walk out in my soft clothes, Harry is already in bed, scrolling on his phone. He looks up and smiles, pecking my lips softly when I get into bed.
“Your sweets are in the fridge, let me brush my teeth and I’ll turn the light out.”
I nod and curl up into bed as I wait for him. Not 5 minutes, he’s back in bed, pulling me close before he turns out the light.
“Are you gonna be okay, love? You’ve been tense since we got here.”
I sigh and bury my head in his chest.
“I’m nervous… And honestly I haven’t been feeling that well lately so maybe that’s just not helping. And with the stress of seeing him, and of course my granny, I guess I’ve just been a little off. But I’m really glad you’re here… I’m excited for you to meet my sister. She’s a-.”
“A pain in the ass, you’ve mentioned.”
“But you’ll like her! We fought a lot when we were kids of course but we got closer in high school. You’ll love her!”
He laughs and squeezes me tight.
“I could never love anyone as much as I love you. But I’m sure she’s great. Just keep thinking of all the positives, remember? You love this town, you love this time of year, don’t let them take that excitement from you. And I am very excited to experience this with you. Now let’s get some sleep, okay?”
I smile and curl up into his arms before slowly falling asleep.
Friday 05:30
So put your best face on everybody
Pretend you know this song everybody
Come hang (Come hang)
Let's go out with a bang!
Bang! Bang! Bang!-
I wake up to my alarm going off as I feel butterfly kisses on my cheeks. I wake up to see Harry, planting soft kisses all over my face before he smiles when he sees I’m awake.
“Time to get up, love. We have to be downstairs in 30 minutes.”
I groan and wrap my arms around his neck as I sigh.
“Can you just tell them I died or something? Or better yet we both did? I don’t want to go into the cold… I wanna stay here and cuddle.”
He laughs and shakes his head, pecking my lips before he pulls me up.
“Well, your mum is bringing coffee in like 10 minutes so you have to be alive if you want some of that. Because I do.”
I laugh and shake my head as I get up from the bed, pulling clothes out of my bag before I start to change. Harry and I are quickly dressed by the time my mom knocks on the door and Harry happily accepts the coffee.
The second I smell it, I get nauseous and I run to the toilet, throwing up. I hear Harry sigh and he comes into the bathroom, throwing my hair up in a clip before he starts to rub my back. I throw up a few minutes before I flush, slowly standing up so I can rinse and brush my teeth.
From the corner of my eye, I see my mom with a worried expression on her face.
“How long has that been going on, Y/N/N?”
I shrug and wipe my mouth, turning out the bathroom light before fixing my hair quickly.
“A couple weeks I guess. I’m never running a temp so I figured they were just random waves of nausea.”
She sighs and shakes her head.
“I think you should take a test.”
My eyes widen and I look at her.
“You think I could be-.”
Harry and I share a look, one filled with anxiety.
My mom only nods and rubs my back in comfort.
“When we come back after breakfast, I’ll go get you a few tests and you can take them and we’ll go from there, okay? Just try not to stress about it.”
We only nod and she leaves only a minute after. Harry lays back down and holds his arms open to me and I immediately lay in his arms, holding back tears.
“What are we-.”
“Shhh. Everything will be just fine, love. No matter what. If you’re pregnant, we’ll handle it. And if not… maybe it’s just not the right time. Either way, I’m not going anywhere. We will figure this out. Together.”
He kisses my head and rubs my back as we lay there for a few more minutes before we finally head out to the parking lot. We all hop into the van, the vehicle filled with silence as we make the small journey to the lift off field. After about 10 minutes, Andrew parks the van and gets out, meeting Bob outside so the can attend the pilot’s meeting. Harry squeezes my hand and gives me an anxious look.
“So… we just wait? I thought we would all be getting out and that’s when the hard work starts.”
My mom and I laugh and I shake my head before I peck his cheek.
“No, there’s always. Just a little waiting. They have about a 30 minute pilot meeting to determine whether or not we can fly. Based on the wind, I don’t think that’s gonna happen. Right now, if we flew, we’d flop around and lose control.”
He laughs and nods. As expected, when they come back from the meeting, we aren’t able to fly. Andrew makes the decision to head to breakfast rather than still inflating like most were doing, even though we couldn’t fly. We pull into the parking lot of an almost empty diner and finally get out of the van. We eat breakfast, Harry and I sharing a plate since I really wasn’t in the mood to eat much.
The minute we get back to the hotel, my mom runs to her car and takes off, no doubt to go buy me tests. After about 20 minutes, she comes back with a knock on our door. She hands me the bag and I let out a shaky sigh.
“I’m sure you know how to use these… I’ll give you two some space. Call me if you need me sweet girl.”
She kisses my forehead and squeezes Harry’s shoulder before leaving the room. We’re quiet for a few minutes before Harry sits next to me on the bed, taking my hand in his, squeezing it before he raises our joint hands to his lips, softly kissing the back of my hand.
“I meant what I said, Y/N. No matter what the results are… we’re gonna be okay.”
I sigh and start to tear up.
“Are we even ready for this-.”
He sighs and puts a finger on my lips, silencing me.
“We’ll figure it out love. Just like we have with everything else. Alright? Now go take those tests. We can cuddle when you finish and we’ll wait for the results.”
I sigh and stand up, taking the tests into the bathroom. I take all 4 and place them on the counter, letting out a shaky sigh. I wash my hands and take a quiet minute to myself before opening the door and flinging myself on the bed and into Harry’s arms, causing him to laugh. Harry sets a timer on his phone before he puts it back on the nightstand and cuddles close to me, kissing my head.
“Are you hoping for certain results…?”
Harry is quiet for a minute before he turns to me with a small smile.
“Well… If you are pregnant… I would be extremely happy. I mean we’ve been together for 3 years and we live together. And besides… I want a little you… I’ve thought about it on and off… And maybe that can happen now. If you’re not… I don’t know… Maybe it’s something we could talk about? I mean… obviously I’m not getting younger despite how hot and young the girl next to me is…”
I laugh and nudge him playfully as he laughs and hugs me. He pecks little kisses all over my face before he starts to tickle me. He towers over me, determined to tickle more, but is interrupted by the timer on his phone going off. My face pales and we both sit up. He turns off the timer and we sit quietly for a minute before Harry speaks up.
“We’ll do it together…”
He takes my hand and pulls me up before he walks to the bathroom. We share a look and nod in agreement before looking at the tests. Positive. All positive. I turn to him, tears in my eyes, as are his as he quickly pulls me into his arms and hold me tight. After a minute, he pulls away and kisses me passionately as he holds me close. When we pull away for air, we share a small laugh and he hugs me once again.
“God I just- We’re having a baby! I love you! We need to call mum! And Gem! We need-!”
I laugh and shake my head.
“Let’s try to find some onesies here… Maybe we can surprise them. But we should go tell my mom since- of course she knows and she’s probably dying to know.”
He laughs and nods. We leave our hotel room and head over to my mom’s room, softly knocking on the door. She opens it and immediately lets us in.
“We’ll…?!”
We laugh and she glares at me.
“Okay okay… I’m pregnant. We’re having a baby.”
She tears up and hugs the both of us tightly.
“I’m gonna be a grandma again!!!”
I shush her and put my finger on her lips to shut her up.
“Hush! There’s people here we don’t want knowing!”
She nods and I remove my finger. Her phone pings and she picks it up, reading it before she looks up at us.
“Your grandmother wants to go shopping and Andrew wants to know if you guys are going to dinner tonight.”
Harry and I share a look and I sigh, falling back into his arms with a groan.
“Tell them we’re still jet lagged. I don’t want to deal with her tonight.”
She laughs and nods, hugging the both of us before she leaves our room. For the rest of the night, we cuddle and talk a little about the baby until I finally fall asleep, drifting into my dreams of hoping for a bright beginning.
And in the back of my head, I knew that this weekend was going to be a whirlwind.
EVEN MORE ADDITIONAL RANDOM CANON DETAILS OMG
Long time since I last made one!
Daniel is seen biting the nail of his pinky finger and then spitting the nail on the floor when he's bored, so I'm guessing he's not as nitpicking about cleanliness as Armando is
We also see him biting a pen when he's nervous ((funnily enough, Armando also has the habit of biting things when he's nervous))
Daniel always ignores people he deems inferior
Roberto has apartments (unknown how many) on London, a house in Miami, and a house in Bogotá
Daniel has no investments or properties other than the apartment where he lives, and his only sources of income are Ecomoda's monthly check and his gov job's monthly check (which barely pays, aparently)
He has a private driver
Basically no one in Ecomoda's board has any additional sources of income lmao
Don Hermes is often seen fixing things at home, be it electrical, mechanical, or plumbing issues, he seems to know how to do all sorts of repairments or at least knows the basics
Ecomoda started as a small tailor shop located on downtown Bogotá
Patricia loves sushi and Russian food
Aura María doesn't really like caviar, but she likes the fancy feeling that comes with it!
Aura Maria has probably been working for longer at Ecomoda than Gutierrez, because she said that Gutierrez has been claiming to to be about to divorce since he stwrted working there
When we see characters that believe themselves to be superior to other character and they have to greet each other with a handshake, the one who feels superior will extend and shake the other's hand from above. I didn't know this but my hubby told me this js incredibly rude and condescending! Which matches perfectly, because the 2 occasions I noticed this was 1) when Patricia greeted anyone, which perfectly matches her character, and 2) when Roberto meets don Hermes, which perfectly fits the situation because it's when tensions are super high and everyone thinks Betty is trying to steal the company
Also, a follow uo to the last point: when they shook hands when saying goodbye after the gentleman talk they had, Roberto no longers extends his hand from above, but rather straight, like it should be. A clear demostration of trust and good intentions from both sides! This apparently meant there is no longer this distrust and feeling of being "above" son Hermes
Don Hermes since the beginning extended his hand straight, btw!
Patricia scratched Marcela's car while Marcela was on Miami, and left it stranded at her apartament because it ran out of gas and had no money to put more
Marcela is older than Patricia but it's unknown by how much
Mario was able to recognize that Michel was a foreigner JUST by looking at his shoes from a far. ((If that isn't being extremely observant and detail oriented, idk what is. That man is a MENACE))
Don Hermes and doña Julia have been together for 30 years. ((God bless that woman's patience because if I were married to Don Hermes I would be a widow by day 2 lmao))
When Sofia and Efrain married they were dirt poor
They love lamb sandwiches and that's basically all they eat during their honeymoon because they couldn't afford anything else
Don Hermes never knew what happened with Miguel, but he always had a feeling that that basterd did something awful to Betty
In some episodes you see Marcela with green contacts and others you see her with her natural eye color, brown
Maria Beatriz likes going out to party with Hugo and his boyfriend, Rolando
By the end of the novela, they break up, tho
When Hugo comes back from his vacation after Betty's first collection, he now has 2 boyfriends
Patricia and Hugo both had a crush kn the same guy
Hugo loves his antique phone. We see him talking about it at different points in the novela, showing it to random people. He's so in love with that phone lmao
Doña Julia and Margarita met during the wedding ceremony of their children
Gutierrez didn't take his wife to the wedding lmao
Don Hermes is still paying for Betty's grad student debt (posgrado)
Betty worked at the Banco Montreal in the area internacional at the same time that she was studying her posgrado
Betty and Nicolas went to the same college
We never see Nicolás in any of Betty's college memories, but tbh idk how Colombian colleges work lmao
Mario smells and kiss Patricia's hair/skin during Armando's public statements about marrying Marcela, during the first collection launch we ever see. At this point, they aren't a thing yet.
Freddy also smells Mariana's hair while they're at Inesita's house, for some weird ass reason that I've never understood
There's another security guard, Javier, I think, who is known for sleeping at the job lol we never meet him but he works night shifts
Mario and Armando keep extra clothes in the presidency's private bathroom.
Don Roberto has a pipe collection and plays golf
The Mendozas have dogs. We see them on the background once when Roberto and Margarita are at their house
Maria Beatriz was about to have surgically removed 2 ribs lol
Carmensita, Roberto's secretary, was with him for 30 years
Mario was going to be Armando's best man at his wedding with Marcela
Margarita was RELIEVED about Armando only using Betty and not actually in love with her🙄🙄
Margarita has a Shi Tzu dog
The Mendozas have several maids, all dressed in very stereotypical maid fashion (ngl I thought that wasn't a real thing lmao)
Lastochka AU - Strange blind date
Pairing : Nikolai x F!Reader ( OC/Mini MacTavish)
Summary: One and only time you want to twist Gaz's neck off.
AU to my Lastochka series
WARNING: Mature Theme. Crack Fic. I repeat. Crack fic. don’t take it so seriously. Swearing, alcohol use, innuendos.
A/N : part 2!!! I don't know. Thanks to @siilvan for bouncing and plotting the story with me, and @nrdmssgs post inspired me.
masterlist
“Oh Crap.” Gaz quickly flicks his eyes towards his phone, looking at the caller ID flashing up on the screen. He knew the time had come. He threw his controller towards Soap as he grabbed his phone, he mumbled, “Wish me luck.”
“Why?” Soap stuffed a handful of popcorn into his mouth as he took over the controller and the game.
“Someone is going to kill me.” With that parting word and look of confusion on Soap’s face, Gaz quickly darted out of the common room and into the corridor.
“KYLE GARRICK!!!” Quickly pull his phone away from him, ears ringing from you screaming down the phone.
“DID YOU REALISE WHO YOU SET ME UP WITH FOR THE DATE?!!!”
“Come on, trust me on this!” Gaz pleads.
Throwing the last bit of your clothes into the washing machine, you swap the phone onto the other side of your shoulder as you put the powders into the washing compartment, “Last few times you said this, it turned into disaster.”
“Well, not all of them ended in disaster??”
“Well, how about that IT guy? He was nice enough wasn’t he?” Gaz said meekly.
“How about that girl you set me up with in London?” You huffed as you slammed the machine door closed and set it to wash. “She was only using me to try to get close to Johnny!”
Oh you felt an off vibe from that girl the moment you sat down. She wouldn’t shut up about Johnny, and she practically ignored you when he came to pick you up at the end of the date, eyes all glued on him.
“He was nice , yes, but to be honest? Too nice and bland.” you sighed. You felt bad for that guy. There were moments of good conversation, but there was no chemistry there. You ended up introducing him to your mate instead, and now they are happily together. You two stayed as friends.
“Alright, trust me on this one really.” he emphasised on the word trust.
“I am having a very hard time trusting your judgement on people’s character now.” You sighed. For someone who is in such a elite task force and the only person in his batch to endure both physical and mental torture simulation? He is really crap at seeing through people’s true character.
“Price knows him personally, so you know he is a good quality sort. I guarantee you he will treat you nicely.” Gaz reassures you.
And you let Gaz talk you into it. Again.
“He will come and pick you up. I’ll send you the details! Don’t worry, I already warned him of all your likes and dislikes.” You really don’t like that conspiring tone he has in his voice. He is up to something. You know your friend.
Standing right in front of your apartment, all nicely dressed up, you begin to wonder what this person is like?Is he young? Or older? Does he live in this part of the world as well?
A black car suddenly pulls out as your mind was clouded with dark thoughts, you snapped back into reality as you heard it honking at you.
Price knows him, so there is a high chance of him being in the military? You seriously don’t think Price has much of a social life outside work. To be honest, dating a military man wasn’t on top of your list. You have enough heartaches sending your brother and friends off on mission all the time and not knowing in what state they will return. Walking out of the gate, or being rolled off the plane in a body bag.
Hum. somehow it looks very familiar. Too familiar.You narrowed your eyes with suspicion.
A dark slicked back hair man with an aviator stepped out from the driver side of the car, with a huge smirk on his face.
Fuck.
“Hello Lastochka, we have met again.” Pulling down his aviator, “You look very beautiful.” he commented casually.
“Why are you here?! Are you stalking me?” Stepping back from the kerb, ignoring his compliment, you questioned him alarmingly.. Maybe it’s time to move house, or find a new job. Or maybe you need to move countries. Or go underground.
Nikolai’s lip turned down, feigning a hurt expression on his face. “Come on, not happy to see me?” he lamented.
“I don’t need to see you today. I am waiting for someone to pick me up.” You wave your hand dismissively, trying to be as polite as possible.” Now can you please move along.”
Nikolai blinked a few times, slight surprise and amusement on his face. “ What are you talking about? I am here to pick you up for your date.”
Ok, he is definitely stalking you. “How do you know I have a date?”
“I know your date very well, let’s just say.” That cryptic smile on his face again.
You already started plotting all sort of different ways to torture or kill Gaz in your mind.
“How?”
Putting his hand over his heart, winking, “I am your date, my little bird.”
He chuckled as he observed the different expressions flashing across your face.
“Don’t blame Gaz or Price for this. I asked them first.”
Nikolai walked around the other side of the car, he opened the passenger side door, bowing like a butler as he urged you into the car. You feel like de javu, you have no choice but sighed and gave up on resisting, and slid into the car.
Ok, add Captain Price onto the hit list as well. At this moment you are beyond care that he is your brother’s superior or someone who you look up to almost as a life mentor.
After a short drive and parking his car, you had a good look. He brought you to the riverside boardwalk, a nice part of the city centre where your new colleagues had mentioned about when you ask them what and where are places to explore in this city.
“I booked a table at a bistro on the side of the river, they serve really good local food. Gaz mentioned you haven’t had a chance to try out the local cuisine?” he smiled down at you warmly.
Shaking your head to answer his question, “Been too busy with moving house and thrown straight into work. I haven’t had time to really check out this area yet.”
Holding his hand out, waiting for you to accept his invitation. You gulped. Is this really a good idea?
“You’ll love the food there. Come. We still have a bit of time before the restaurant opens. Let’s take a walk along the river?”
Before you can register, your arm is already out stretched, he gently takes your hand into his large callous hand. So warm. So… safe?Taking a peek at his side profile as both of you stroll down the walkway. A face etch and hardened with traces of battle and wars, you noted. A tired fatigue hidden behind the wall of resoluteness. A look you are too familiar with. Your heart actually aches at the thought. Aching for him.
“Now, along this river.. Is where the civil war started.” pointing towards the far side of the river, “ they tried to land a helicopter there, but ended up crashing it.” he sighed. “A pity. It was quite a nice one too.”
He pulls you in closer to him, carefully shielding you from the large group walking towards you, crowding the walkway, leaving limited space to pass through.
You can feel the heat radiating through his body, hint of leathery musk and sandalwood smell of his cologne and familiar whiff of cigar you often smell on Price. You instinctively lean in even closer to him. Wanting to smell him more. Feel him more.
It feels very intimate. Almost.. romantic?
Ok. scratch that. The romantic level suddenly dropped below negative.
The rest of the walk was dotted with anecdotes of historical facts of the city, occasionally him pointing out good spots to hang out or to avoid.
Dinner was full of surprises too. True to Gaz’s word, he already knows what your likes and dislikes are, and ever being the gentleman, pulls the chair out for you, lets you decide on the food, the drinks, and makes small suggestions here and there.
When you flick your eyes at him, silently asking for help when the waiter starts speaking in a local dialect which you haven’t quite got the hang of, he slides in to help, without pushing in and overtaking the whole situation.
He let you lead the conversation during dinner. Letting you ask him all the questions. Almost all the questions.
This man is officially a bigger flirt than Johnny. You declared.
Probing him carefully, “Nikolai isn’t your real name, is it?”
“Why would you want to know?” Taking a sip of his grappa, he leaned slightly forward, closer to you, “So you can call out my name… in private?”
“In your dreams.” tapping your fingers on the table, “First date is still in progress. We haven’t even decided on a second date yet.” you scoffed, face heating up slightly with embarrassment.
Cocking his eyebrow, “Oh? Already thinking about the future?”
“I am a planner. I like to think ahead.” He wants to be a tease? So can you.
His smile broadens as you banter with him. Why does he look so pleased?
At the end of the night,he walked you to your door, making sure you got in safely. This is where you two part ways for the evening. But not before he grabbed one of your hands carefully, cupping your face with another, gently caressing your cheek with a thumb. He murmured a few words in Russian, voice too low for you to catch anything. Looking into your eyes with his deep brown orbs, he brings up your hand, lip lingering on your knuckle for a few seconds, and finally giving it a soft kiss, and bid you goodnight.
Leaving you standing there, stunned. And burning like a furnace.
Holy heaven. You are NOT falling for this charismatic man already. No. You are NOT.
“You set me up with HIM! The guy who threw you out of the helo and nearly killed you!” You screamed again.
“Well I am still alive…?”
“.... it was actually nice.” you admitted, begrudgingly. “He wants to take me on a second date.”
“And he nearly killed me by driving like a maniac!” you slump into bed, haven’t bothered to change out of your dress.
“You lived? Didn’t you? And you got to work on time.” He laughed. “So, are you going to tell me how the date went?”
“Did you say yes?”
You bit your lip. “Um…..”
“Ah,come Lastochka, let me take you on a helicopter ride and show you around this beautiful city! Don’t worry, You will be nicely secured with a seat belt. I promise I won’t throw you out of the cockpit like I did to Gaz”
Lord have mercy, why did you agree to this second date?
Hey ho, let's go! Happy Wednesday, chickadees!! Can't believe we've made it to the end of February, if I'm being perfectly honest. Thank you as always to the lovelies @itsmaybitheway , @piratefalls , @wordsofhoneydew , @firenati0n , @getmehighonmagic , @onthewaytosomewhere and @magicandarchery for the tags!! This week, I'm bringing you the beginning of my next chapter of The Story of Us, because I finally feel like writing for it again!! I was in a lil slump, tbh, but I'm bound and determined to finish this piece and I'm very excited for the next few chapters!!
Despite their time spent apart weighing more than their time spent together, being with Henry is like a dream. It’s like Alex has just floated along, directionless despite thinking he’d had it all figured out, until he’d met Henry. He’d always sworn he wouldn’t be one of the ones who allowed his whole personality to be overcome by a relationship, but he gets it now – when someone has the other half of your heart, and that empty space in your chest has been filled with them, it’s impossible not to spend a multitude of moments thinking about Henry. Thinking, dreaming, ruminating on when they can be together again.
London had been unparalleled, and despite the tears they’d shed when he’d had to leave, Alex is glad to have those memories to get him through his ‘Henry dry spell’ as he’s taken to calling it. (Henry doesn’t find it very funny. Nora and June just roll their eyes at him.) And as much as he wants to fly across oceans to stand next to Henry and hold his hand, to catch him when he leaps off the stage every night in a new city, Alex has to focus on the play-offs that are fast approaching.
It just so happens that Henry is in New York for a few days one week for a photoshoot. He’s just been named Spotify’s Global Top Artist of 2023, and Alex, high on the successes of someone who is so important to him, decides to use his day off to drive up to the city to celebrate with Henry.
It’s an easy, quiet kind of rhythm between them now – commenting on each other’s posts, texting back and forth and keeping up a constant stream of communication. When Henry drops ‘You’re Losing Me’ to thank his fans, Alex listens to it on a non-stop loop in the weight room, as he’s driving to meetings, and while he cooks himself dinner that night. When Percy drops an insta story, Henry posing with a handful of raisins and a bottle of wine, a telltale snapshot from the past that claims this secret track was recorded months before Henry’s relationship with James ended, Alex’s heart breaks for him, and he immediately calls Henry, comforts him through the fresh wave of pain the release of this very personal track brings him. They talk on the phone well past midnight that night, and on his drive up the east coast the next morning, Alex is so thankful he’ll be able to wrap his arms around Henry in just a few short hours.
They meet at Henry’s hotel, and paparazzi are already waiting as Alex pulls up to the valet and hands over his car keys, then slings an overnight bag over his shoulder and tugs down his sunglasses, pointedly ignoring the hoard of camera-happy paps who call out to him, asking invasive questions and trying to capture his attention through shocking details they’ve been fed from a friend of a friend who knows Henry Fox personally.
It’s all bullshit, so he ignores it. It’s not their fucking business, and he refuses to give them even an inch, because he knows they’ll trample all over that and steal a mile.
Summary: Arriving in new, unknown place can be scary or anxious. Thanks God that welcoming is suprisingly warm and nice.
Author's note: please note that the whole place even if idea was based on Canadian town, is pure imagination. Also it's fiction so the same goes for all court and some procedures. Again if you are struggling to imagine a mansion, please search for Croft Manor from Tomb Raider games - Legend and Underworld mostly. A lot of its changed (we don't need this big pool and training area) but still I will try to describe and elaborate everything. English isn't my first language so sorry for any mistakes. Taglist will be in the end of chapter.
MINORS DNI
In the less than week Y/N was ready for a trip. Whole thing was discussed in details with officials. She'll arrive around 11 a.m local time and will be picked up by someone, then they'll drive to Grand Hillsam, this can be long drive around two or three hours. She searched the information about the town - it's not big, around 10.000 people is living there between mountains and forest, lake was nearby. In the area there are couple of really old wood cabins which were hunting/vacation houses for rich people from big city around one hour before - Welland where population was way more bigger, around 150.000 people and it had big car fabric and some high tech instances. Grand Hillsam was first a small village, but the rich people didn't want to live among common people or wanted to be closer to the nature so they started to build houses and mansions there. Y/N looked at the photos, yes the view was stunning, but leaving deep in the forest? Now it was easier with phones and Internet but then? Her distant family had to be crazy.
Her research told that indeed aunt Elizabeth, like she liked to say about late, last family member was part of old lineage, which was very powerful in that area their good luck ended unexpected around three hundred years ago and then they didn't come back to their greatness and before the IIWW family left the city. By the information given by the court, her aunt was living in London since the beginning and till the end of her days.
Y/N closed her notebook with little sigh, the plane was just about to land, so she put everything down, waiting for the end of a fly. Everything later went smooth, passengers were transported into airport from deck, than all the controls and taking bags. Someone was meant to wait for her, but honestly how they'll find each other. When she left the depart rooms, a lot of people were leaving with her and small crowd formed. There were persons holding signs with names and Y/N found herself looking at them in search of her's. Almost in the end of a crowd she found it, a tall man with black hair tie into manbun, leather black jacket and black jeans. A simple paper with Y/N written in the middle. He smiled, when she stopped and approached him carefuly.
"You have to be Y/N." He smiled and they shook hands gently.
"Yes it's me, nice to meet you." She smiled a little flustered.
"Welcome, I'm Jeon Jungkook."
"Y/N L/N."
He was tall and well built, but had cute face with sweet bunny smile. He screamed handsome and she felt little uncomfortable when a warm feeling spread in her chest, then on her cheeks.
"Let's go, the trip will take a little." He said and reached for her bags." And let me take those."
"Thank you."
Looking closer Y/N noticed the pierced lip and tattoos peaking out of sleeves. He walked confidently and her things didn't seem to be heavy for him.
"How was the flight?" Jungkook asked when they were leaving the airport and went into parking.
"Peaceful. I slept a little and read some documents send to me." She responded honestly.
"Actually my condolences." He smiled bitterly.
"Thank you, but I didn't know aunt Lizzie." Y/N shrugged a little.
The officials informed her that person which is going to pick her up will know why she is there to avoid any mistakes or being lost in foreign country. It was a good point. They reached a big, black pick up and he put her lungage in the back then opened door like a real gentelman. She thanked in small nod. Inside car strangely was smell of chocolate, when Jungkook got inside, he adjusted her seat and helped with belt.
"If you wish to sleep again it's okay." He showed his bunny smile. "But later road can get rough. I don't also mind a comfortable silence."
"We'll see." Y/N smiled plesantly shying away from his gaze.
Jungkook nodded and turned on engine which came back to life with a loud roar. He was driving smoothly and confidently, Y/N found herself glancing on hid hands and arm from time to time, but the view was getting prettier. When they left the airport town they drove into mixed forest.
"Sometimes during evenings or night it can be colder, especially with thick clouds and rain."
"Is it common here?"
"Well it can happen two or three days in a row. Sometimes there is a big storm and none is actually going outside, we had it last year."
"Thanks God I packed variety of clothes." Y/N giggled a little. "View is stunning."
"Wait till we reach the hills or mansion." He smiled cutely.
"You know where it is?"
"Yea... it's kinda hard to miss it, even that far and in that small town. I sometimes go for trips into wild and mansion is a little away from the main town. It's on the hill."
The drive went peacefuly, sometimes Y/N was asking questions about the town. It turned out Jungkook is local traveller and has known this place since birth. He's enjoyed all trips into forest and mountains.
"Would you like to stop by to eat something?" He asked glancing at her .
"Yes, it would be nice."
"We'll stop in Welland outskirts, I want to avoid car traffics and I know a good place here."
"Very well then."
As he promised they've stopped in bar which was near the road. Y/N ordered nuggies and some fries when Jungkook took whole ass two sets - burger with fries and chicken leg with fries. Well he was a big, built man probably he needed that much food. After eating he drove through back roads in Welland, as he said earlier to avoid car traffics. When they left town for good, she again started to admire the view. Road suddenly went up and seemed w bit challenging, but he was a skilled driver.
"Are there any wild animals?" She asked looking at thick, mixed forest.
"Shit I should warn you. Yea there are wolfes and bears along with deers and mooses. But don't worry I didn't see them that close to town. Your mansion is on the hill and surrounded by high wall with a gate. Nothing should come inside. If you would want to go deeper in the forest which is around manison - because actually it's the farest point in town, you can meet maybe something. Especially if you will go down to the lake." He said with a little frown.
"The town and area around must be very beautiful." Y/N said and smilled a little.
"It is." Jungkook replied glancing at her for a second.
Unwanted blush crept on her cheeks, so she turned head to again look at the forest. The drive was filled usually with silence, sometimes she was asking some casual questions, but didn't want to distract him, when road seemed a little difficult. Y/N played a little with a necklace, well the reason of the trip wasn't very plesant but she enjoyed it anyway. She didn't noticed how Jungkook's eyes traced the necklace and it's chain. He bit his lip and tried to focus on a road again.
Around the 4 p.m the have arrived in town, which was indeed was smaller and placed deep in the forest and mountains. It was stunning and Y/N could spent there a lot of time if circumstanced were different. He stopped on central square, which was surrounded with some shops, restaurants, big supermarket and town hall, in front of which Jungkook stopped.
"I believe mayor will have all the info you need. I'll wait here." He said putting on sunglasses, because the sun started to be a problem.
"Thank you." She flashed him beaming smile and got out of the car.
In her backpack were all the files she needed so, she entered the building. In reception she got to know, that mayor will be aviable in five minutes or so. She felt little anxious of her case, but after all assistant asked her to come in. Inside the room, behind the desk was older man maybe around his sixties, he got up and shook her hand firmly.
"Good morning miss L/N, how was the flight and drive? Mr Jeon didn't bother you too much?"
"No, he was very nice and helpful."
They both sat down and she took out the docs and her ID. He checked everything once again then lean on chair.
"So... the case is kinda important and complicated." Man sighed. "According to law, you'll inherit the mansion, but there is a lof of buts."
"Actually I didn't know that I had distant family." She sighed unsure.
"Mrs Elizabeth Balfour didn't know too. She only got to know, when she was working on her last will. Around year ago she got diagnosed with advanced lung cancer, she wanted to clear things before passing away. She meant to make an mansion a museum, actually she gave away most her things with historical records, rest went for charity." He said looking at his files.
"So why I have been called to court if she wanted mansion to become museum?"
"Well... it's about the general Balfour lineage will. Mansion is always passed to last family member, that will is above Mrs Elizabeth's will. It's going to become a museum only if it's proven that last family memebr can't afford to take care of mansion." He explained slowly.
"Well, it's kinda obvious. I don't know how rich the aunt was, but by the search and files I can tell that she was richer than me." Y/N smiled nervously.
"Yea, I understand that." Mayor nodded.
"So... now I need to give up on mansion officialy? It'll become museum and it's all?"
"I wish it would be that easy." He giggled. "Now the mansion need to be inspect and everything inside need to be write down and cataloged, unfortunately you have to be present during the whole process."
"Oh..." Y/N's eyes widened at the news.
"Don't worry, actualy Mrs Balfour cared about the mansion, it had general redo three years ago, the sweres, electricity and heating system was modernised. Also we have Internet here and good signal finally. The rooms aren't damaged or something. Mrs ordered to clear one of master bedrooms, when she decided to make it museum, so you can stay in the mansion not in motel." Mayor stated with encouraging smile.
"Sir are you sure? I won't destroy anything?"
"Well, it'll be difficult with those old, wooden furnitures. And you don't seem like some clumsy person." He joked a little.
"Well, I'm sometimes clumsy, but actually I love history and old staff like those." She admitted little nervously.
"Oh perfect, maybe staying in the mansion wouldn't be that bad? Actually I know it's kinda troubling, you are probably working but I can arrange some official files to prevent you being fired."
"It's all right I have already talked with my boss, I can do homeoffice. If Internet is good here, I can work."
"That's nice to hear actually. I hope we will make it work..." he sighed. "Another issue is that we need a specialist, which goverment must find and send here, only he or she can start cataloged things in the mansion."
"So now we have tied up hands?" Y/N asked with sigh.
"A little. We have old list of historical heritage, but the specialist need to describe their state and what it exactly is. We as common folks can only point that 'this' thing is in the mansion."
"How much is there?"
"A lot." Mayor frowned. "The list include all books, statues, paints, furnitures etc."
"Books?"
"Yes, there is a huge librrary."
"Oh my." Y/N huffed. "It looks like tough work, but I think, I can help."
"Thank you Miss L/N. I'll tell higher ups tomorrow about everything and I'll send you the list too. You need time to rest and accomodate yourself in the mansion."
"Thank you Sir." She smiled a little.
They both stood up and he lead her to exit, outside Jungkook was waiting in the hall, sitting in armchair. Mayor smiled at him.
"Can you take miss L/N to the mansion young man?"
"Yes, that's why I'm waiting." He also stood up.
"Great." Older man took off a two sets of keys from his pocket. There were more than fourty keys in total. "Those with red ribbon are keys for garden and cellars, blue is everything in mansion. A black key decorated with a rose is a main garden, silver key decorated with a crescent moon is the key for mansion and a golden key decorated with sunrays is for main gate."
Y/N took them looking at sets with little surprise, she touched the necklace. "What a coincidence..." she muttered.
"Let's go." Jungkook encouraged.
She nodded and they went outside, then into a car. He drove to the north, soon the view has been covered by trees once again. Road was still going up, after around fifteen minutes the mansion emerged from the corner, really the wall around was maybe six or eight meters high. There was some space in front of the gate but behind was a proper parking. They stopped and Y/N took the golden key and opened the gate slowly with Jungkook's help. It creaked just like in the movies, once they entered inside, green but a little neglect grass welcomed them. Right under the wall were parking places, on left side the stone road was leading to a mysterious garden with high hedge on right side was a nice space with big, spacious tree and old swing. The middle stone road was leading to mansion and probably once in time was decorated with flowers. A lonely nightingale was sitting on a tree, whole scenery was stunning, just like from an old tale.
"It's beautiful." Y/N whispered with shining eyes.
"Let me take the suitcase." Jungkook ofered with bunny smile and he went for that.
Mansion was big, probably had two floors except ground level and it went all the way back. The windows seemed to have all glass untouched and actually it didn't look as neglected as she thought it'll be. Jungkook came back with her bags. Actually she found it amusing how he was looking like total bad boy, but seemed to soft inside. The smile which mayor gave him in the office was genuine and he had to help in town a lot.
"Thank you." She said sincerely.
"Come on I'm lifting way more heavy things."
She lead the way inside and with silver key opened the mansion doors. Strangely the lock was very heavy to flip. Inside greeted them smell of old things and a lot of dust.
"I'll come if you want and oil all the locks in the mansion." He offered putting down the suitcases.
"If it won't be a problem. This on main door was a little challenge. I don't want to break the key."
"Do you have that much of strength little one?" Jungkook teased.
Y/N bit the lip and looked away. Currently they were in a little vestibule, on left were solid, heavy doors probably leading to cellars or working areas, on right decorated, wooden doors. In front of, separated by old, classic columns was a very big space, reaching the high of the main roof with fire place, coffee table and two couches. Some painting was above the fire. In the wall in front of them were two door on right and left side. In the middle on left wall were stairs, parting on left and right and those lead to first floor, which was also separated by railings and agains columns, but it had only four doors on both sides and next stairs leading to the second floor. So there was in count eight rooms on left on both floors and eight rooms on right. Through big window there was view on the garden, the closed part.
"That's a big space." Y/N turned around and looked at first floor.
"Yes I agree... that's bigger that I"ve ever imagined." Jungkook also looked around.
"One of the bedrooms should be usable." She went carefuly up by the stairs, which sometimes were creaking too.
Y/N opened the first door, he followed her but the bags were left down below. It come out that it was a nice little office with huge desk, big bookshelves and couch with coffee table, everything in old style and wooden pretty furnitures.
"Well it looks like place to work." Jungkook summed up.
"Yeah, I might end up using this."
They enetered the next room which came out as cleaned master bedroom. It also was giving the old mood. There was another desk, couch with coffee table, on left smaller room serving as old wardrobe, kingsize bed on little platform with canopy, on the right entrance to spacious bathroom, which was remade for sure not long ago.
"All right we found it." Jungkook smiled widely.
Y/N nodded looking around, she really liked how the mansion looked, the old vibe, a little mystery that it was kinda hidding.
"Well the rest of the mansion probably needs big vaccuming... I also need to figure out if everything is working and where are certain rooms." She said with little sigh." Not gonna lie, I am excited a little."
"Do you need any more help?" He asked honestly.
"Oh no, no please I took too much of your time."
"Well, for now I don't have too much to do, I might just help." Jungkook offered scratching his nape.
"I think, this oil will be fine." Y/N giggled nervously.
"Let me take the suitcases."
When he left the room, she looked closer at furnitures, well it could use some clearing. There was still some dust and wiping. He came back fast.
"Can I get your number if something would happen?" He asked a little awkwardly. "Also we don't usualy have a guests here, so I might be helpful with navigate through the city."
"It's good idea." They exchanged the numbers. "Also maybe you'll know then if I can rent a car?"
"Oh yes, I think I know someone who can rent a car."
"It'll be a difficulty to go to the town by feet..."
"Good, I'll talk to them, we'll see maybe tomorrow it'll be done." Jungkook nodded in excitment.
Y/N smiled at his energy and cute behaviour. He really was a good boy with bad boy looks for now.
"Won't you be scared to stay here alone?" He asked concerned.
"Now when you asked I might be." She looked around nervously. "I can lock the door here and when we saw the dust I can assume none was there in long time."
"Yea, I mean who would climb up the wall?"
"Yeah..." Y/N giggled nervously.
"See you tomorrow and remember to check the door and gate later." Jungkoom said and high fived her.
She walked him to the doors, he left waving to her. When door closed, silence started to ring in her ears. She decided to open all doors in sight and it came out that those on first level near the entrance - solid ones were leading to small storage probably once for servants and further to cellar. Decorated were leading into old fancy dining room with long table, big window and chandlier, also there was door to the kitchen, which was also modernised and working, after turning on fridge it started to get colder. Opposite doors in main hall were leading to big library - on left and ballroom on right. She decided to explore it later. It came out the rest of the rooms are bedrooms except the first one of the each floor - those were offices. Y/N came back to her room and started to unpack, the called her friends and boss. Signal was strong and net was working pretty fast.
When she ended the things in the room, her stomach get itself known and the night has fallen upon the city. The mansion was plesantly silent, it seemed like she got used to it pretty fast. Luckily Y/N packed some sandwiches and decided to eat them as supper, but deffinitely she was going to go on shopping tomorrow. She grabbed the small fleshlight in case and went to close the gate, in the main hall she kept smaller lighting on wall, but didn't use fake big chandlier on the roof and some fancy lightning on railings. The whole mansion didn't need to be lit up for now, so in some corners were dark spots and shadows. Y/N didn't seem to noticed when sometimes they would fade out when she was closer and darkened when she was far away. For sure she didn't noticed some shadows shifting. The gate closed with the same creak, she checked also all rooms, but they were closed and came back to master bedroom and started her night routine. Sleeping in such big building will be strange for sure and probably will include some small lamp being turned on the whole time, but nobody was going to know. When she entered the shower the shadow shifted outside the mansion, Jimin jumped out straight from it and landed quietly on stone path. He turned back looking at buliding, smirked and jumped again, turning into nightingale, then felw out into the dark night.
DOWN BELOW LIL SILLY PIC OF MANSION ROOMS PLACEMENT (you are allowed to laugh only three times at this so be carefuly with those.)
I was doing a little research on cars in London in the 1930s, trying to figure out the details of how Crowley bought the Bentley for my WIP. (I'm using the show date of 1933, not the book date of 1926.) Not much on that front so far, but I did learn a few things that might be of interest to others:
Although cars were already capable of going 70 miles an hour, there was no speed limit in 1933. (It had been abolished in 1930 and reestablished in 1934.)
Motorists blamed pedestrians for getting into accidents (sound like anyone we know?)
Driving tests weren't required until April 1st, 1934. It's probably safe to assume Crowley was grandfathered in while Aziraphale got his license after this date.
Perhaps most importantly, high-end cars weren't assembled all in one piece. Instead, the chassis would have been delivered to a coachbuilder to assemble the bodywork and customize it for the buyer. I'm sure being able to have a hand in designing the Bentley helped cement the bond between demon and car.
#002 - The Sun Bleaches the Bones
So in the last month, it has been a mixed bag as I look back over it. It started exceedingly hot here in the UK. Far, far too hot. Though thank the gods it is now slightly cooler, so I feel less like I am going to burst into flames. Secondly, I only did some things I said I would do in the last one of these. Hopefully, the predictions I make this month will be more accurate. I really hope my prediction to turn into an even cooler dude comes true.
What have I been creating?
Well, since the last newsletter, I have published 2 (that's right, 2!!!) projects.
"Dinner at Blair Castle" is now live for you to enjoy, and I hope this little project is to your liking. Making the artwork for this was great fun, though the best piece of art is definitely an image one of my friends drew that makes me feel wrong in just the right way.
The other project I published this month is “Tales from the Tracks, which is a collection of six one-page adventures for The Trains of the Glorious Republics of the People. I enjoyed working on the project a lot, and something about setting a limitation on myself—in this case, 1 single page for each adventure—really gets the creative juices flowing. As part of this project, I got to run the adventures for my friends, and the highlight of that was one group deciding their train engine ran on “communism” and fed the engine the body of an ACC agent who had died while aboard.
Also, I was published for the first time in this zine. It was my first time doing something like this, and I think I will sign up for more things like it in the future.
What have I been consuming?
My dual-wielding of books has come to an end as I finally finished Down and Out in Paris and London, which I thoroughly enjoyed. Though I am no closer to finishing my collection of short stories by that fucker Poe. Hopefully this month I can finish a few more of his stories. I think I will start a new book so I can offset Poe’s goth kid vibes.
I also finished Fallout 4, a game I can best describe that I played. Finishing it was like cleaning that section of the house that you have been ignoring. Now some friends and I have been sucked into Minecraft and I have been constructing many great works. No real thoughts have been occurring about this other than I have this animalistic desire to keep building monuments that offend the gods.
On the TTRPG front, I attended a local convention and made 3 glorious purchases which I hope to one day run.
Wild Duelists: The Ballad of the Bastard and the Tinkerer. Which involves a pair of animal folk traveling to a cinematic location to have a good old-fashioned dual.
TROIKA! A fun game where you play as a group of weirdos exploring a science-fantasy world. Very 80’s sci-fi and looks like a great laugh
Spire: The City Must Fall which is a wonderful large book a friend got for me. Where the party is a bunch of dark elves trying to overthrow the government.
And finally, I also was a player in a TTRPG called Eat the Reich which was great. Nothing says having a good time than driving an Italian sports car like you stole it (which you have) into a concert hall and slamming it into a Demon Nazi with the solo from free bird playing on loop.
What is to come?
So for the next month, I have no set plans on what I am going to make/work on. I am currently working on a high-energy ttrpg about adventures after the end of the world. It's going to have big Mad Max Fury Road/Borderlands-style vibes.
My plans I had to run a Monster of the week campaign fell through due to the biggest threat to running TTRPGS time management.
I have started to plan a spire campaign as I have some plans to make it so it isn't just the same group of players for every session. I may share more details when the time is right.
What to conclude?
Another newsletter has reached its end and as always I hope you enjoyed reading my word vomit. If you want to support me so I can buy cool new items to inspire me please take a look at Tales from the Tracks and share it with your friends.
The next one will be in a month and I look forward to writing to you then.
My Favourite Quotes from: Niki Lauda Das Dritte Leben
So it's been 4 years since Niki has passed now. Over a year since I became so involved with Niki's life here. It's crazy how short of a time it's been.
It's been a while since I made one of these, but as I have brought two new Niki books recently, I figured I should make this to share. The book is fully in German, which I have had to use google translate on; so there will be grammatical issues in this but for the most part, I'd say this is accurate.
Enjoy
"Only Graham Hill and Chris Amon had private planes, and they were simple propeller mills. It had more to do with sport than luxury or gaining time when they came to the races in Fleger. Once they flew from Spa to London in Graham's Piper Actec, and because I was going the same way, they took me with them. Back then, you didn't travel 20 minutes after crossing the finish line of a race, but on Monday morning. It all started with Graham complaining about a headache that morning from drinking so much at the Grand Prix party. It was raining miserably and the runway was a grass runway. We barely made it over the embankment and darted rather noncommittally into the laundry room over the canal. Hill and Amon constantly argued and yelled at each other. Hill was a captain but only had a visual pilot's license, Amon understood instruments, and I think that's where the trouble came from. I sat in the back and had no idea of anything. Anyway, we ended up in London. I didn't feel like I wanted to be a pilot or have an airplane." - 8
"The impression improved when my cousin of a clear friendly tone took me in his Cessna 150 for a sightseeing flight over the Inn Valley. Everything was nice and smooth and friendly, and flying so easy. The view over both sides of the Alps suggested a direttissima between Salzburg, where I now lived, and Ferrari. I became a student pilot and I loved practicing in Salzburg-Bologna. That's how flying got a meaning." - 8
"Stay in your own house on the edge of the forest. Breakfast with Marlene. Fifteen minutes drive to Salzburg Airport, Kemetinger has already fired up the Golden Eagle, an hour later she sails into Bologna. Sante Ghedini picks me up. Two hours at Ferrari's circuit. Enzo Ferrari himself comes over from his office. We're going to Cavallino for lunch, I can do Polsk at the old man's (unfortunately very important). Another hour of testing. Off to Bologna. At half past five I walk in at Marlene's door, like someone who comes home from the office happily. To imagine that day with a scheduled airliner was impossible to fit in twice a six-hour drive: a horror." - Niki's routine
"A few years earlier I had been a hopelessly incompetent loser in high school, in my apprenticeship as a mechanic and then again at high school, and now I was playing the great analyst of Formula 1. I had a good sensorium in my butt, I could feel it Car lived, also in details." - 10
"I met Marlene in the summer of 1975. She was Curd Jürgens' girlfriend and as such the lady of the house at a party in Salzburg. She has a Spanish mother and an Austrian father, was born in Venezuela and mostly grew up there. She has a lot more Spanish than Austrian character. The name Niki Lauda meant absolutely nothing to her. Marlene was infinitely far away from racing and asked the most hair-raising questions, like a child. A few months later she definitely didn't marry the racing driver in me, she took that with her without realizing what she was getting into. As a racing driver you need naïve optimism ("nothing's going to happen to me anyway"), otherwise you wouldn't be able to get into the car at all, and Marlene was willing to believe in it just as I said she would. She was endlessly carefree, and before she knew she was right in the middle of the horror. I was 27, world champion and on my way to my second title. Before I got into the Ferrari on August 1, 1976 at the Nürburgring, Austrian journalists told me that the Reichsbrücke in Vienna had collapsed a few hours earlier. It was a strange feeling: that the biggest bridge in the city, in the whole country, could simply collapse in a second." - p11
"Frank Gardner in a Cortina Lotus had won. At the podium he put down the wreath and descended with tears in his eyes. He had just been told that Jim Clark had died in Hockenheim. Jim Clark was also my big idol, so that also affected me. What particularly bothered me about it was that it was caused by a technical defect, back then there weren't safety bolts in the rims, and if you had a puncture, the tire could jump off the rim. So Clark simply took a turn on the long straight in Hockenheim and pulled straight into the forest without it being his fault. That kept me busy for a long time." - p16
"First, there were these microscopic slivers of burned face shield (balaclava) that had been transplanted with the fresh skin I had developed an allergy to. He got 70 such things out of me in a three-day ordeal with tweezers, carefully treating everything with peppermint oil. The ears, or what was left of them, were raw flesh and painful beyond belief. Willy called the surgeon, who said: The rest of it will probably rot off as well, then the pain will be gone." Willy marched down to Lake Fuschi and dug up some roots, to which he said things like: That helped the Crusaders. As a result, I was able to sleep for the first time in three days, and for 15 hours, and two weeks later I had skin again over what was left of my ears. Then it happened incredibly quickly, also because I was so eager to return to normal life. I soon started running and strength training, and I noticed the progress every day." - p25
"Hannes was a good conversation partner in my euphoria for the future Lauda Air, which was already going through my head in 1977. He had an idea for the "style" that we wanted to develop, for our self-representation and our self-image. We talked about flying, about upcoming planes and an upcoming airline. No detail was too small for us, no fantasy too big. It "It was just fun to sand the contours of a vision. Hannes sketched a jumbo tail and painted a red L in it. This is what the logo could look like. No type of aircraft was better suited than the jumbo, because of the corresponding slant of the towering tail. However, since there was no company yet, the corporate design of the Lauda Air could initially only be applied to my crash helmet: a double red L, lightly scripted, on a white background." - p31
"In the years that followed, Hannes Rausch accompanied me to almost every Grand Prix. Of course there was also Bertl Wimmer. Bertl lived in my (Salzburg) area, worked as a salesman for motorcycles and mopeds for KTM and, through his enthusiasm for motor sports, came into contact with Walter Wolf and finally mine. Our common interests were motorcycling, flying and all kinds of nonsense, and by about 1975 we were friends. Ideally, I packed a team of four as a Grand Prix accompaniment in the Citation or the Lear Jet: Marlene and Messrs. Willy Dungl, Bert! Wimmer, Hannes Rausch (one for the body, one for the heart and one for the brain", at least according to Hannes' interpretation)." - p31
"I only passed the theory part of the exam on the second attempt in Braunschweig. For the practical part, I needed a long-range flight, so I shipped the flight instructor and examiner to the Lear in New York and then flew on to the US Grand Prix in Long Beach. Bernie Ecclestone was already waiting there, saying he urgently needed to go to Las Vegas. So I flew him there. Before I left, I flipped through the messages that Bernie had brought me from the hotel. I should urgently call Frau Maier, our housekeeper in Salzburg. In the phone box at the airport I was told: "An Buam ham S', an Buam ham S'." Our first child was born: Lukas." -p44-45
"Of course, I also drove a full Formula 1 season. When I came home from the Monaco Grand Prix, our kitchen was slightly damaged. Did the dogs behave like that?" I asked Mariene. "No," she said. I had a tantrum" She had her fit during the TV broadcast from Monaco when she saw Didier Pironi try to pass me at Mirabeau, riding on the back of my Brabham and missing my neck by six inches before slamming into the guardrail . Pironi's maneuver was so bloody stupid that you could get angry about it. But that wasn't why Marlene dismantled the kitchen. She was just so incredibly angry because she once again had to watch what she had been doing since the Nürburgring in 1976 knew exactly: That racing is idiotic. Everyone who takes part is idiots, and I, right in the middle, played a brilliant leading role: Congratulations!" and a kitchen box was due. When I got back into the car six weeks after the fire accident, she didn't stop me because she basically allows everyone every freedom, but she thought I was stupid. She thought the whole racing sport was stupid, our rituals, the rush, the heartlessness, and that you can cripple yourself. Marlene never again had a relaxed relationship with racing. My selfishness was strong enough not to let that deter me. I believed, and I do the same today, that in a partnership, too, the free development of the individual must be out of the question. If there isn't room for it, it's just not the right partnership." -p47-48
"Back then, I actually wore beige lace-up velvet trousers every day that had a burn hole over which Marlene had sewn blue fabric in the shape of a fish. I also wore a beige Niki sweater and the shoes painted by Hannes." - p51
"Gilles Villeneuve died in Zolder on May 8, 1982. I liked him for his charm and naturalness, admired his willingness to surrender unconditionally to sweet madness (which, however, had nothing to do with his death fall). In the last hours of his life I had two typical experiences with him. Thursday night at the hotel: I was about to go to bed and heard the flop-flop-flop-flop of a helicopter gone mad. It was pitch black and a searchlight scanned the area in front of the hotel, trying to sort out pylons and cables. The thing did land, it was Villeneuve's Agusta 109, a nice twin engine with retractable gear, Gilles had an immaculate Clarification: "I flew away from Nice when it was still quite light." The next day, first training, first ride. I happened to come out of box right behind Gilles and saw him in the allerer. flew out of the first curve. When we stood together later, I asked him out of genuine interest why a person would throw themselves out in the very first corner of a training session. He said: "Niki, I can't do it different." There was something in him, that simply does not allow him to drive in a calculating or cautious manner, no matter what the track (at the beginning of a training session, the ideal line is not yet sanded clean, that only becomes apparent after a number of laps) That was the last thing I heard from him heard: "I can't help it." - p61-62
"Now, sitting still on the plane, sadness, worry, anger and the burning uncertainty, of course also self-pity seeped into me: What had I done that I had to be the center of such an oversized disaster? In Kennedy I was finished, physically and mentally. I trotted to the PanAm counter, handed over my ticket. The Man looked at it, looked at me, made two dashes through, gave me the ticket and said Stand By". I hadn't bothered with the ticket before, no- had no idea I was stand by to Washington. When the PanAm man said "stand by", I didn't give a damn for the first time in six days. I thought I did like me Out of. Tilt Then again: I have to go to Washington. But how? should i cry shouldn't I cry? I was remote controlled, but the helmsman was not at the post I turned and walked back into the hall and squatted down. I couldn't do more. As if I had been beaten and can no longer hit back. I stared at the ticket without any realization. I almost passed out, I didn't care, I couldn't take it anymore. I would sit here, just sit there I couldn't sleep either. Except for race fans, no dog in America knows me, but now everything was different. - p139
"I flew from London to Salzburg to see Marlene and the children. Marlene was still completely distraught. The ten days that had passed since the crash hadn't lessened her shock. Lukas also showed concern, only Mathias was quite relaxed, listened to a lot and said he was going to play tennis." - p149 (about the plane crash)
"Lukas then came out with the fact that jokes about it were already circulating at school. For example, if you don't love your wife anymore, then send them with the Lauda Air."" -p150
"Niki Lauda's wife loves the neighbors was the headline in August 1989. With a photo (not of the neighbors on Ibiza, but of me), the report took up half the front page. The lover was not only described ("he is 33, tall, blond, blue-eyed"), but also called by name. It was the partner, now husband, of Marlene's sister Renate and one of our closest friends So they didn't bother with even a minimum of research. Since Renate was pregnant at the time, we were able to win the lawsuit against "Bild", which is otherwise hardly possible in such cases in Germany. By and large, the tabloid writes what it wants." - p240
"When the first journalist somewhere heard that I had an illegitimate child, he confronted me about it. "That's right," I said, but it doesn't help anyone if it's in the newspaper, not the child, not the mother, not the father and his family." right Okay, said the journalist and didn't write a word. Over time, others found out about it, too, and I said to them: 80 Yes, it's true, but anyway, he's known about it for a long time. He doesn't write it because he's helping me with it." They didn't write it either, and at some point quite a lot of people knew about it, at least beyond the narrow circle. None of them developed the ambition to make a particularly nice headline with the private life of Niki Lauda. Until at some point a German writer from wind and put it boldly in his newspaper, then followed short confirmations in the Austrian newspapers, but Christoph was already in kindergarten age. That's how my mother experienced it, for example. In her slightly crumpled Schönbrunner German she said: Niiiki, did that have to be?"- and never a word of it again." - p241-242
"Christoph is a bright fifteen-year-old growing up in Vienna and with whom I have little contact. We see each other about three times a year, so of course no sensible father-son relationship can develop from that. I only have one family, it stays that way, married or divorced, it doesn't matter. I have a bad conscience that it happened," and I can't get rid of it either. The situation presents itself as unsolvable in the sense of a result that could make everyone happy. I don't want to cut myself in half, and I can't see a middle ground that I could reasonably walk. Christoph grew up completely differently than the children under Marlene's and my influence. I feel the difference very strongly, but of course it's okay." -p242
"Marlene is my life person. She has uncanny strength and security, and she rests in the midst of a chaos she beautifully crafts." -p242
"I had lived with a very disciplined young lady for seven years and married Marlene within a few months. I didn't take it that terribly seriously, I just wanted to know what it's like: being married, and Marlene was exactly the kind of person who could understand it well." - p243
"When I confessed the illegitimate child to her, she was hurt but decided that if I wanted that to happen, nothing about our family should change. Of course I wanted. If we did eventually divorce, she demanded, "I'll have the kids, the dogs, the camera." So we continued this weird kind of marriage that we were both comfortable with. A relationship can only be based on how two people understand each other, and we got along well. I remained stubbornly focused on my egocentric life, racing, company, and Marlene accepted that. Normally you can only choose between family and freedom, I could choose as much as I wanted from both. I could lean my head back when I felt like it and when I felt fit I could run away and do whatever I wanted. Everyone knows that I wasn't a saint anyway. But even there it depends on what is ultimately the case remains. It's easy for me because I can decide for myself in this constellation. We do not need to discuss the responsibility for the three. If Marlene pulls the lace and says, what now?, I'm there immediately. Just: She has never pulled the lace. I know exactly the limits. And if the boundaries need to be shifted, then we'll shift them against me too. But since Marlene gives me such freedom, thank God, I also live it. But when push comes to shove, she always wins. Just as we got married, we divorced in 1991. It didn't matter and it didn't change anything. The official in Thalgau asked about the reason for the divorce. ..There isn't one, I want a divorce." "It's impossible without a reason." ..What could be a reason, for example?" ..If someone wasn't at home for six months." I haven't been home for six months." ..Are you sure?" Yes, of couse." "The marriage is divorced." On leaving, Marlene said: "The children, the dogs, the camera." I was flabbergasted. It had worked the way she always said it would. And nothing changed. Of course I took all the steps to protect her, and also signed the house in Salzburg over to her." -p244
"For five years only the very closest circle knew about it. Marlene wanted to spare the children who went to school in Hof near Salzburg the public discussion of our private lives. So we kept quiet" - p244
"Accordingly, it turned out that Lukas had nothing in mind with cars and motorcycles. He just got comfortable with cycling, that was all. I resented how he grew up with no technical spark. I had to do something. When he was about thirteen, I bought him a small motocross bike for his size. He was super excited about it, but for two months he just started the thing up in the garage and went wrrrrmmm, wrrrrmmm. No, he doesn't want to drive, he doesn't want to. One Saturday the whole family was sitting at the Schloßwirt in Anif, it was a wonderful day. I said to Lukas, let's drive home quickly, I'll show you something. On the lawn in front of our house I put him on the front of the motorcycle, sat on the back, grabbed the handlebars, showed him how to use the gas and clutch. But he only stopped in the middle of the handlebars and wasn't willing to move his hand towards the accelerator. So we drove around in the meadow, two on a small bike. It seemed like a solid hour before he finally parted his hands enough to get the gas and clutch. I suddenly jumped off. He roared like crazy, made a slow giant arc, and I had to run alongside. In the end I had to catch him because he couldn't get his feet on the ground properly. Very slowly, in first gear, he trembled through the meadow and scolded me. Anyway, he was on his way. - p246
"The next time I came to Salzburg, Lukas said: So what?" Come down with me. I'm going to go motocross." "Come down." He dressed carefully. Leather outfit, boots, fall home, the whole fuss. I stood there bored and waited for him to shake his way out. He jumped on his motorcycle and sped out of the garage on the back wheel - an image I'll never forget become. I ran to Mathias.,,What's the matter?" The little brother then told me that the day after our first trip, Lukas had gone down to the farm boys on his motorbike, and he had driven with them until he could, becoming more and more ambitious, and in the end totally stupid." - p247
"With Mathias, the result was the same, only the way to get there was much easier. He wouldn't have gotten up on his own, so I put him on the bike, said that's the gas, that's the clutch, he said yes, I know. He drove away, made a detour, came back and drove unsharpened to the garage door. ,,Are you dumb?" "I don't know where the brake is." He was fearless. Full throttle from the first second. And his brother was such a protégé. Anyway, they started riding motocross together" - p247
"If you really aspire to a motocross career, you should start just after walk school. So it was by no means too early when Lukas and Mathias, aged 14 and 12 respectively, asked for decent motocross machines for further training. Marlene had a fit, but I told her to let her go: Motocross is the hardest thing there is. You will never get ahead. There's no money to be made, the sport is just exhausting, dusty and dirty, they'll soon stop doing it." Marlene accepted and I bought the boys two 125 Hondas. They drive it really well and there is no longer any difference between the two. They are equally wild and equally good. I hope that it doesn't turn into a motocross career, and that suggests that they're jumping around like crazy out of sheer jokes and frolics. But they lack the seriousness of cardio, running and weight training every day, so I believe I think the racing bacillus will eventually suffocate in the eternal dust of motocross. Marlene has now fully embraced the kids' hobby, drives the machines back and forth, checks in between Barcelona and Ibiza." - p248
"My mother survived him by eighteen years. I didn't see her very often either, but there was always a bond and affection, maybe there was also a hidden longing for the family that had been lost so to speak. Her last days were moving. She had cancer, only wanted therapy up to a point, and then no more. Brother Florian and I took turns at her bedside for the last week and never left her alone. They were important days for me and for this last remnant of family. I think after all our mother understood that she had sons who loved her. Now only Florian is left. We had always had little contact, but after the death of our mother we became closer again. He lives his life completely differently from me, hasn't done anything in all his 46 years that I would call work, but that's by no means criticism, on the contrary, I admire him for it. He studied but didn't finish, did this and that, was always happy, and because of them Family circumstances he could also afford it." - p250
"I never had a problem with my appearance after the accident. problem That's what I look like, that's it. I therefore only had the medical technically necessary operations on the eyes and ears chen, but no plastic surgery. James Hunt, my 1976 World Cup rival, said the accident was the best thing that could have happened to me: "You finally have a face to look at." - p253
"In the meantime, an Austrian brewery had expressed interest in providing me with a Gösser"-Kapperl, green of course. Practical and unsentimental as I am, I thought five million schillings is a lot of money these days, so why shouldn't I have one green Kappl marching around?” I really didn't have any major concerns and made a preliminary contract. Then I showed up at the company with the green Kapperl on a trial basis. The employees were stunned. They thought I wasn't quite tight anymore. Lauda can't wear a green cap, he can't have any other cap but this red thing, and the fact that it says Parmalat isn't an advertising message, it just happens to be written on Lauda's cap. Of course, I have so much respect for symbols and the opinions of the employees that I allow myself to be taught. So I canceled the Gösser lecture with difficulty, wept briefly and violently over the beautiful coal and politely put the red cap back on. It will probably stay that way, I think." P254
"I had just come back from Miami, with the flu, overworked, overtired, came to the Viennese apartment next to the Hotel Sacher and suffered a heart attack. I fell to the ground, unable to move. With the utmost effort, I crawled to the phone, but who should I call? Emergency call, ambulance? It was the time of my worst argument with the AUA, and even in my fear of death I couldn't give them the triumph that the red Kappl was being carried out of the Sacher-Haus on a stretcher. So Willy Dungl, but he wasn't there. I asked for a call back, extremely urgent. Meanwhile, still on the ground, I scribbled notes for Marlene, account numbers and so on, farewell. After hours I think Dungl finally called. I'm having a heart attack, I said, please take me to the hospital discreetly. Willy and his wife picked me up, took me out of the house and straight to the general hospital, where on the Cardiac station everything was already prepared. First check: everything ok. healthy heart, as in the last pilot examination. Infinite relief, however wrong with unchanged Pains. So it could only be a misaligned vertebra, a pinched nerve, which is Dungl's specialty anyway (actually it was the fifth thoracic vertebra, I think). I'll take you straight to Gars, where I can treat you properly," said Dungl. I was dragged to Willy's car in the hospital yard. It came to me like a rocket from the subconscious Remembering Willy Dungl's car skills. ..Who's driving?" I asked, suddenly wide awake. I'll drive," said Dungl. I whimpered, "Let me drive, Willy."- p272-3
"The greatest driver personality over my 25-year span has been Ayrton Senna. The strongest, the best, innovative, extremely sensitive as a driver and as a person. He dealt with racing perfectly and with unbelievable intensity. He had everything under control and was creative in all his ideas. He was warm-hearted and friendly and inspired me as a person, although his religiosity was completely alien to me" - p291
"At the time of the 1993 Spanish Grand Prix, I tried to lure him to Ferrari. I met him in his Barcelona hotel room and told him how great it was to immerse himself in the Ferrari myth. But he didn't give a damn about myth and said he was only interested in a car that he could win races in. We didn't even get to talk about money, and in the end he probably drove for Williams almost free of charge in 1994 because he basically had to buy Prost out." - p292
Hope you enjoyed the read! When I finish the next book I'll try to get it out. Also tagging @f1yogurt
Cage (Emotional Moments) : “Emotional moments, you left in a rage”
Recorded in 1978 and intended for the ‘Back To The Egg’ album, ‘Cage’ tells the tale of a romantic bust-up and the subsequent despair and regret felt by the narrator.
“Emotional moments, you left in a rage But if you could love me now I wouldn't be in a cage”. This is pretty clear: some emotionally charged incident happened, causing the narrator’s partner to leave in high dudgeon.
“Provisional licence I'm under arrest, but if you could get me out I'd like to take another test”. Provisional licence? Clearly not literally talking about the provisional driving licence, is it? Could it be a way of referring to marriage engagement? The incident that caused the narrator’s partner to bail has put an end to the engagement? Now our hero pleads for another chance.
10 years prior to the recording of ‘Cage’, Paul’s engagement to Jane Asher ended. The chronology of the break-up is unclear as, naturally, neither party wanted to go into detail. There does seem to be a consensus , though, that an incident occurred where Jane, returning to Cavendish Avenue earlier than expected from appearing in the stage play ‘Summer’ (either in its’ Oxford run for 2 weeks from 18 June or from the 2 day run at Saffron Walden Arts Theatre on 5/6 July) and found Paul with Francie Schwartz.
Francie’s own account has this happening after Paul and Jane had already split. In her book ‘Body Count’ she says:
“He was still angry about the day Jane came over. We had been asleep (at least he was) and she walked right in and knocked on the bedroom door. He whispered disdainfully “who is it?” “Jane”. He was out of bed in a minute, grabbing the midi coat that always hung on the back of the door…I could almost hear Jane breathing…then I peeked through the second door and saw them walking down the stairs, silent…into the bathroom, onto the balcony I climbed. He was walking across the courtyard, grouchy. Then he spotted me and yelled, “get back in the house, Clancy”. “
Other accounts have this incident as the flashpoint that caused the break-up.
‘McCartney Times’ website quotes a fan’s account of the incident: “One of the fans who used to hang around McCartney's house at 7 Cavendish Avenue in St Johns Wood, London, says that "...Paul brought this American girl home…[and a little while later]...another car turned into Cavendish Avenue - it was Jane. She'd come back…earlier than she was supposed to. Jane went into the house. A bit later on she came storming out again and drove away." Later on, Jane's mother arrived to retrieve Jane's things.”
“Emotional moment, you left in a rage, but if you could love me now, I wouldn’t be in a cage. Dramatic performance direct from the stage, but if you could get me out, I wouldn’t be in a cage”.
Jane was appearing in ‘Summer’ throughout this period, in Oxford and Saffron Walden as mentioned above and in the London run that began on 10 July.
The middle section of ‘Cage’ details the narrator’s regret at something he’d said:
“I've been sent to tell you That the man you were with last night Is feeling sorry, sorry. But he told me to tell you that he hardly ever lies but he lied to you last night He didn't mean it, no Said he didn't mean it, no He didn't mean it, no Said he didn't mean it, no”.
Incidentally, an early run through of the song (which can be found on YouTube as Cage #1 - Paul McCartney) ends with Paul saying, “Thank you very much. We’d like to do a song now called All My Loving”. Associating it with another song inspired by the same person?
NINE NIFTY THINGS YOUR MUSE CAN DO.
01. write & read music. not that punk band mucous membrane was churning out grammy-winning material, mind you, but knowing where all the notes go on a sheet of staff paper, which ones sound good together, and a handful of things about tempo and rhythm aren't half-bad skills to have. of course, constantine's process for writing music would make professional composers cry, but these days he most often puts this skill towards creating new spells, since he finds the principles remarkably similar, so the music world is spared his endeavors for now. ( underground single venus of the hardsell excepting. )
02. miniature-scale arts & crafts. he's really gifted with his hands, and with any activity that requires fine motor skills: intricate ritual-carving, cutting his own hair, braiding other people's hair, restringing an instrument, rolling insanely long joints, fixing jewelry, sewing, threading a corset, building a detail-accurate small scale model of a chair out of matchboxes for an ex-girlfriend's miniature house.
03. electrical work. another useful application of his excellent fine motor skills. he's lived in enough shithole apartments and had to hot-wire enough cars for friends to know his way around a wiring issue or two, not to mention the fact that electricity can be a handy supplemental power source in certain spells and it's helpful knowing how to get to it wherever you are. it stands out because he's pretty terrible with most other forms of household maintenance; there's just something uniquely mind-boggling about a guy who can't unclog his sink but can install a circuit breaker like a pro.
04. tie a cherry stem with his tongue. natch.
05. get anywhere in london, and cite almost anything in its history, from memory. a big bloody city with a big, bloody history attracts a lot of unearthly creatures with a lot of different emotional, spiritual, psychic, and physical fancies; it's been useful for him to know where significant events have happened, and when, and why, in case something starts up and the symptoms strike a chord. it's also useful to know where to go when he needs to gather specific kinds of information: the seedier pawn shops, gang territories, high-end clubs where celebrities and politicians go to hide from the press. on top of the strategic reasons, he's also spent a significant amount of time being homeless under a few different circumstances, and keeps his accumulated knowledge of last-ditch shelters, times that the police patrol the sewer tunnels, and safe places for a meal close at heart.
06. gamble with a 100% win rate. two of his best tricks are synchronicity wave traveling and probability manipulation, where he basically feels out the flow of luck in the space around him and shifts the current to go his way. it's incredibly dangerous on a larger scale, since it can cause a butterfly effect — too risky to use on avoiding a hit that would have killed him or sabotaging a villain's scheme, for example — but as long as he sticks to small-scale, short-term events like horse races and poker games, he cleans up easy. it's his primary source of income, since he doesn't have an actual job.
07. melt the face off a vampire. specifically the former king of the vampires, but supposedly any. demon blood is a nasty thing to have in your veins, and incredibly corrosive upon ingestion/absorption, for unknown reasons. if anyone wanted a snack they'd have a bad, bad time.
08. semi-fluently sign in & understand BSL. he credits his reason for learning to a deaf ex-boyfriend he dated in the 90s and has continued to brush up on his skills over time, although his preference to learn languages from the people who use them, lack of consistent lessons, and geographically-wide variety of friends has resulted in a . . . frankly nightmarish hodgepodge of dialects that can make him harder to understand.
09. play electric guitar, bass guitar & harmonica. he was lead vocalist and bassist for mucous membrane, and although they were only together a year before the newcastle incident, he'd been learning both electric and bass for a year or two before. it took him a long, long time to pick it up again, given the circumstances, but he managed to get his hands on a fender 1962 jazz bass a few years back and has been slowly but steadily working on getting the old feel back. the harmonica started as a joke gift from gary after constantine and chas got arrested for a pub fight in '77, so they could play it to pass the time when they inevitably got shafted by the system ( they didn't, constantine talked their way out ) but he became quite genuinely good at it, and now it's his shameful secret.
#man's not ashamed of anything in his life except that goddamn harmonica i s2g (i say. having made it up like that)#fun fact the fender 62 was sting's main bass (who constantine's appearance is based on) and he acquired it in......Newcastle :)#also 'uniquely mind-boggling' i say as someone who is better at electrical work than i am most basic life skills#( headcanons. ) I'M JUST LIKE THE BASTARDS I'VE HATED ALL MY LIFE.
A Guide to the OCs of the Idolverse (with faceclaims)
This guide to the OCs consists of my personal faceclaims for them. These are not accurate, in that no living person on Earth (that I know of) can replicate the exact images of them I have in mind, but these ladies are pretty close. You can also refer to this post for a more detailed description of their appearance.
If you have different images of them in mind and don't want to ruin those, you can check out the guide without faceclaims. Feel free to picture them as you like - and I'd love to hear your versions as well :)
(I'm also shit at graphic design of any kind so please excuse the super amateur-ish edits; they were just fun to do)
Kaya Madaan is South Asian-American and grew up in the suburbs of Connecticut with her parents. An only child, she lost her father in a car accident when she was in high school and her mother has since never remarried. During her senior year at NYU, a few months before graduation, she was assaulted on campus, an experience she doesn’t talk about but has shaped many future decisions in her life. After completing her masters in London, she moved to Amsterdam to do her Ph.D. during which time she met Namjoon in Seoul while visiting her Korean aunt (her father’s adopted sister) and her family.
She lives by herself in a studio apartment, content with her independence and solitude. Her close friends largely include select people from college and university, and later Taehyung’s on/off girlfriend, Dilara, as well. She tends to be a bit of a workaholic and in the process becomes a bit scatterbrained and ends up being absent-minded about other things. Being the one of the youngest doctoral students in her program, she’s very conscious of coming across as mature and capable. She takes a lot of pride in her intelligence and is not shy about disagreeing with opinions.
(Naomi Scott as Kaya)
Nari grew up in Anyang, Gyeonggi province, as an only child. Sometime in early middle school, she and Seokjin met in the same class and formed a life-long friendship. Her dream as a child was to always become a doctor, though her focus on surgery developed years later when she dated a classmate whose older sister was studying to be a surgeon. She currently works in Seoul as a surgical resident and lives alone in an apartment a block away from the hospital.
While Nari is secure in her skills and her career path, she finds it difficult to devote an equal amount of time to her personal life which sometimes leads to insecurities, especially when she sees her old classmates and other people her age move on with their lives. She also tends to forget to take care of herself when she’s caught up in the chaos of her job, leading to missed meals and an occasionally unhealthy diet of food and alcohol.
(Im Jinah as Nari)
An only child of a business tycoon father and an ex-model mother, Miso grew up in the Gangnam district of Seoul, in the Cheongdam-dong neighbourhood alongside equally wealthy and affluent peers. Her family keeps appearances and status above all else and as a result, Miso attended school with children of her parents’ colleagues and neighbours, most of whom grew up to be heirs and heiresses to businesses and fortunes.
Miso left Seoul for university in Australia, where she spent four years getting her degree in business management and two additional years working various jobs, including bartending and music managing a pub, before she was forced to return to Seoul. She current works as an assistant music producer at Big Hit, where she keeps her parentage and connections quiet.
Miso does not enjoy or show interest in going down the same road as her peers, much to her parents’ disappointment. She makes an effort to distance herself from them as well as her parents’ unhappy marriage, and has since high school earned the reputation of being “unfriendly”, which has continued into adulthood as well.
(Park Sodam as Miso)
Chaeyoung grew up alongside her older brother, Chanyeol, in Gwangju. She lost her mother at a very young age; three years later, her father married Soyeon, whose attempts at building a relationship have been resisted by Chaeyoung. As a result, she spent a lot of her time growing up with her friends and classmates, including her brother and his best friend, Hoseok. While Chaeyoung and Chanyeol were always close as children, they naturally grew apart as they became older.
Chaeyoung currently works at a publishing house as a junior researcher, a job she Ioves. She’s outgoing and charming and enjoys meeting new clients and talent, even if she sometimes feels inadequate and anxious about her performance. Due to her young age and surrounded by so many people older than her, she can tend to be a bit impressionable and prone to be taken advantage of. She lives with a senior from college, Sungmi, who has a questionable social circle but later becomes friends with Sooah, whom she meets at yoga class and looks up to as an independent, single working woman in Seoul.
(Danielle Marsh as Chaeyoung)
Sooah grew up in Busan and later moved to Seoul, the only child of two doctors. She realised as a teenager that her parents' marriage was an unhappy one and sometime during her early teens, discovered that both were having quiet affairs with other people. As a means of escaping her home, she threw herself into extra-curricular activities and her friends circle, choosing to be around people as much as she could. Captain of the girls' volleyball team, Sooah was a popular girl in high school, had a large group of friends and a string of short flings that extended into college and her adult life, the only exception to this being Park Jimin. She currently lives in Seoul and works at an event management firm.
Sooah is confident and outgoing and still maintains an eventful social life, staying in touch with friends from school and college that are now acquaintances. She still harbours insecurities, however, aware of her lack of deep friendships and the reputation she had when it came to dating. She eventually forges a friendship with Chaeyoung, who she secretly admires for being far more put together in her early twenties than she herself ever was.
(Nam Jihyun as Sooah)
Dilara was born in her mother's native country and spent her first few years there before leaving for the UK, due to the stigma she and her mother faced for being and having a child out of wedlock respectively. Her mother met Rudy Komyshan in London when Dilara was in her early teens, and Dilara officially took his surname when she turned fifteen. At a young age, she discovered a love for both dance and racing but eventually chose the latter as her career path. Being in a heavily male-dominated environment, Dilara at times had to prove her worth by going over and above what was expected of her and seeming outwardly tougher to blend in with her peers.
She is the first female F1 driver in the history of the sport and is currently signed with Red Bull, alongside Dutch prodigy Max Verstappen. She sometimes faces unwarranted sexism from journalists and fans of the sport that she is learning to deal with, and copes with the help and support of her friends Lexie (also her trainer), Chris and Fred. Having travelled the world and working closely with people of various nationalities, she has a deep appreciation and interest in different cultures. Dilara is competitive by nature and a bit of a perfectionist, staying for hours on the simulator to perfect every move. She's also a bit of a gym rat, finding it therapeutic to work out alone or with a friend.
(Ananya Panday as Dilara)
Lia grew up in Incheon with her parents and a younger brother. When she was in high school, her parents went through a peaceful and amicable divorce. They were open about the process with their children and didn't hide anything from them, something Lia is forever grateful to them for and since holds communication in the highest regard. Lia was a studious teenager, involved in extra-curriculars and student council activities, as well as a part of the girls' basketball team. She did not give much thought to dating in high school, despite catching the attention of many fellow students. She attended college in Seoul and started working there after graduation, sharing an apartment with her long-time best friend, Dal.
Despite the demands of a corporate career, including the workload and the politics, Lia enjoys her job and is a fast learner. She is able to stay very focused and, like Kaya, doesn't realise her tendency to become a workaholic. She does struggle with stress, especially with the fast-paced environment she works in. This sometimes extends to her personal life as well, despite her efforts to become more laidback.
(Han Sohee as Lia)
A Detailed Timeline Of Taylor Swift's Relationship History
Overview
One of the world's most well-known and successful singers, Taylor Swift, is notorious for her past relationships. Over the years, she connected with many famous men, some of whom impacted her most significant compositions.
Love it or hate it, there is an actual fixation with Taylor Swift, whether it be with her past relationships or trying to figure out who her lyrics are about. Starting with the most recent updates, here's a look back at the pop star's past relationships, all the way back to her high school sweethearts. You can get the most recent look back at Taylor Swift dating history with the help of this blog.
2008's Teenage Romance
In 2008, Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift dated for roughly three months. However, their Relationship also ended very poorly. Swift said that Jonas ended their phone relationship in 25 seconds during an appearance on The Ellen DeGeneres Show. In addition, she wrote melodies about him, including "Mr. Perfectly Fine," "Forever & Always," and "Last Kiss." Later, Jonas regretted how he handled the breakup and declared that he and Swift were now friends.
Leading Men in Hollywood: A-List Relationships
In 2010 and 2011, Jake Gyllenhaal and Taylor Swift had a brief but intense affair. Although they were seen together on Thanksgiving, their romance ended after a few months. Swift is said to have written multiple songs about Gyllenhaal, such as "The Last Time," "We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together," and "All Too Well." Theoretically, according to fans, Gyllenhaal broke up with Swift over the phone and failed to return her scarf, which she had left at his sister's house.
2012: Dating Conor Kennedy
In 2012, Taylor Swift and Conor Kennedy, the famous members of the Kennedy dynasty, enjoyed a summer romance. While dating, Swift even purchased a home close to the Kennedy complex in Hyannis Port, Massachusetts, where they first met. Unfortunately, their relationship ended in October 2012, with reports citing their distance and hectic schedules. According to rumors, Swift wrote the song "Begin Again" about Kennedy, talking about how he gave her hope following a difficult breakup.
Relationship between the DJ Era and Calvin Harris
Swift's Relationship with the DJ era and Calvin Harris received much media attention. The couple appeared to be having a happy relationship as they shared pictures of each other on social media.
Despite the initial euphoria after their well-publicized breakup, Swift and Harris wrote the powerful anthem "Shake It Off."
Relationship with Tom Hiddleston
Shortly after Taylor Swift's breakup with Calvin Harris in 2016, she briefly dated Tom Hiddleston. Nevertheless, their brief three-month romance raised questions about whether it was a publicity gimmick. Swift is said to have written the song "Getaway Car" with Hiddleston in mind, likening their union to a disastrous escape route.
Having a relationship with Joe Alwyn
Holding onto it Very Private: Taylor's longest-lasting and most committed relationship was with Joe Alwyn. They began dating in late 2016 but maintained a low-key, discreet relationship. Aside from a few hint posts here and there, they also refrained from discussing each other on social media. They were a steady, quiet couple who supported one other's careers while living together in London.
Love Songs with Lyrics: Swift composed numerous songs, including "Lover," "Delicate," "Call It What You Want," and "Willow" about Alwyn. Along with Swift, Alwyn co-wrote songs under the alias William Bowery, including "Exile" and "Betty."
In summary
The intriguing story of love, heartache, and self-discovery that is Taylor Swift's dating past. Swift's romantic history is extensively chronicled in her music, from her early high school romances to her turbulent Hollywood relationship. As Taylor Swift's artistic and personal development continues, her followers eagerly await the subsequent development in her ever-evolving love life. first commonplace book of 2023
monday, january 9, 2023 ~ 6:30pm pst
back ‘at home’ (parents’ place) after a lil trip to see family, during which our flight was cancelled (us and the rest of the world) and we consequently got to spend a total of like 48 hours in the car roundtrip. new year’s at the shore was nice though, and so was roadtrip tunes and reading aloud and the very epic puzzle the family completed.
reading i’m juggling a couple of hot library loans right now, trying to finish them before the loan periods expire while also balancing each one’s tone and vibe etc. so it’s the monster baru cormorant (seth dickinson) when i wake up, maybe you should talk to someone (lori gottlieb) during the day, and the last graduate (naomi novik) at bedtime, in what is a really weird stylistic and emotional smorgasbord now that i look at it... insights and observations to come later when i can focus on one specifically. also, big shoutout to the free knidle download of lord peter wimsey mysteries i already had, and to dorothy l. sayers’ way with words and her ridiculous delightful sweet fop of an amateur detective (and no i don’t mean benoit) who collects medieval manuscripts and quotes poetry every so often mid-sentence while periodically having intense wwi ptsd. every generation needs their fruity little detective, it’s a keystone species. reading this aloud to my mom in the car kept us both awake and discussing things like clues and the picture this paints of things like early 20th century london society’s antisemitism and train system and newspaper/ print culture.
watching just went back to check the previous ilcb and while i did mention this show, i didn’t feature it specifically so: three pines, based on the louise penny novel series of the same name, now streaming on prime. my mom loves the books, and now we’re all loving the show, and alfred molina is absolutely loving this role he gets to play (and it shows). you may feel that the premise of ‘small cute town full of local characters where murders keep happening’ has been done already, and you’d be right, but there’s something about seeing quebec on screen like this-- and the indigenous community’s strong presence from the first scene of the first episode-- that feels different, and important. the music design and landscape are great, the themes are very honest even when details or plot twists (the whodunnit of episodes 1 and 2, and the tragic twist at the end of ep 2) end up feeling a little exaggerated. here are some good articles about the show’s attempts to center indigenous voices, bring topics like residential school violence and indigenous treatment by police to international audiences, and (arguable, but i respect them for the attempt) avoid white saviorism.
also, you may have deduced from the recent glass onion blogging that i did finally get to watch knives out 2 electric boogaloo. things i liked about this movie: 1) the response to it/analyses of it/art and memes and edits which i can now enjoy having seen it (the one which observes that the movie itself is a fugue, seriously, i love how much everyone else has been loving this and it has made it so much better), 2) the celebrity cameos (yo-yo ma! hugh grant! stephen sondeheim!?) and watching janelle monae, 3) the visual palette and coloring and lighting and design choices, 4) PEG, 5) finding out at the end that it’s a beatles song reference. i think that i had seen just enough on my dash to have....overly high expectations in some regards, though not specific spoilers so i was still Not Expecting That.
listening got to play a bunch of my music in the car on the roadtrip, so here’s to my mom deciding she likes orville peck (more than hozier!? who is apparently too sad) and my dad enjoying basia bulat’s the garden, and here’s to all the audiobooks, and audiobook recommendations i got from friends, which i gathered optimistically pre-trip and still haven’t finished. so far i’m really enjoying t.j. klune’s through the whispering door (read by kirt graves), which feels both like a more mature and creative venture than his first book and which this narrator is doing a delightful job of (i think the sense of whimsy comes through better when mediated by narrator, it infuses depth/warmth/nuance into details that i think on their own might have rubbed me the wrong way).
and today i just finished listening to jeannette mccurdy’s i’m glad my mom died, which is a harrowing memoir but also was so riveting. she reads it herself, and again having her specific voice and delivery of some of the dialogue was so, so necessary and heartbreaking and occasionally hilarious, it really adds to the experience. major trigger warnings on this one for descriptions (detailed, visceral) of disordered eating, various mental health problems, alcohol abuse, child abuse, and painstaking personal growth. big shoutout to @dimir-charmer for recommending this one, i was immediately hooked, you were so right.
playing stardew year three, and i’ve bought a bouquet. her art exhibit was so nerdy, i loved it. just waiting for the right time to pop the question ❤️ (probably after my next house upgrade)(is this delaying a sign of cold feet, or just wanting to only offer her the best?? i’ve already got 8 hearts it’s probably fine but ahhhhh)
i’ve also figured out (kinda) how to run celeste on this laptop! and immediately threw my poor sweet girl onto many, many icy spikes. again. and again. this one is not a keyboard game, friends, i’m trying lots of different key configurations to try and make it one but i think at the end of the day we’re going to need a controller of some kind. beautiful though.
making spent a lot of yesterday selecting and writing new year’s cards while discovering the power of the background seinfeld marathon, alkj;lkjalskdg asd and i have other art and or craft plans afoot since having been presented with a calligraphy pen and some good paper. baked a gazillion molasses cookies before the trip, but have otherwise just been sort of coasting on creative things lately.
working on threw together a haphazard conference proposal as a way to make myself work on chapter four, and after spending all day staring at it finally just sent it off with the same idea i’d had days ago (but which i thought if i tried hard enough i might be able to improve on. alas.) otherwise, still chugging on recommendation letter (ah) and reading friend’s chapters (ahh) and coming up with things to say for that thing in february (AH) and RAship hours. we’re back to the grind, baby.
