The twill-tapestry weaving technique was unique to Kashmir shawls and determined their design and colour composition. This shawl represents the technique at its peak and illustrates the high mastery of all the specialists involved in its creation. It is lightweight (because the goat hair is high quality) and evenly spun; its surface is smooth and flat, which indicates that the warp threads were wound with the proper tension; the patterns are perfectly executed and clearly outlined; the stitches are invisible; and the colours are rich and balanced. The dyes used in this shawl are indigo for the blues and purples, saffron for the cold and warm yellows, logwood for the red, cochineal for the crimson, and iron filings for the black. What looks orange is a combination of the red warp and yellow weft, and the green is a combination of the blue and yellow threads.

Writing Reference: Symbolism of Colors
Tumblr media
Colors are proven to have a profound effect on the human psyche and moods.
Territories use colors to represent themselves on their flags.
The significance of colors is proven by the high value that our ancestors placed on certain plants or substances that could be made into dyes, such as the Imperial Purple of Rome that was produced from a mollusk that was valued more highly than gold, or the saffron crocus that produced the sacred color of the same name.
Prior to the development of chemical dyes, the creation of colors that did not fade in the Sun or wash away was a combination of art, science, and magic, akin to an alchemical process.
The impact of the Sun shining through stained glass, painting the interiors of churches with living colors that shimmered and danced, in a medieval world where color was often a privilege of the wealthy few, can only be imagined.
The 7 colors of the rainbow—which break down into 700 shades that are visible to the naked eye—are associated with the seven planets, the days of the week, the Seven Heavens, and the seven notes of the musical scale.
Symbolic Meanings of Some Colors
BLACK
Night, the absence of light; mourning, sobriety, denial; authority; perfection and purity; maturity and wisdom.
Although it’s the opposite of white, both shades are, in fact, due to an absence of color, and technically speaking black is not a “color” at all. This doesn’t stop it having a wealth of symbolic meaning.
BLUE
Truth and the intellect; wisdom, loyalty, chastity; peace, piety, and contemplation; spirituality; eternity.
There’s something cool and detached about blue that gives rise to its reputation for spirituality and chastity. Above all, blue is the color of the sky. Like the sky, blue is infinitely spacious. It contains everything, and yet contains nothing. The color is therefore associated with ideas of eternity.
BROWN
Poverty, humility, practicality.
Primarily associated with the Earth, soil, the raw element before it is covered with greenery. The word for earth, in Latin, is humus, which carries the same root as humility. Religious ascetics wear brown as a reminder of this quality and also of their voluntary material poverty.
GRAY
Sobriety, steadiness, modesty.
Gray is the midway point between black and white, and tellingly the “gray area” is an area of indetermination, indecision, or ambiguity. To be described as gray is rather less than flattering, since gray is such a subdued and neutral color, and implies that the person blends into the background.
However, gray is also a color of balance and reasonableness and is the color used, in photography, to balance all others.
Because people’s hair turns gray with age, the word is often used to describe elderly people and is also a color of wisdom.
GREEN
New life, resurrection, hope; the sea; fertility and regeneration; recycling, environmental awareness; a lucky color; an unlucky color.
Green is an amalgam of blue and yellow, and is the color of the fourth chakra. Green is the universal symbol for “Go!” to red’s “Stop!”
MOTLEY
Wealth; a chameleon personality.
Not strictly a color as such, but a combination of many other colors. The word is generally used to describe cloth or clothing. The rainbow nature of motley means that whoever wears it has as many aspects as there are colors, a chameleon personality, and it can indicate the trickster or fool (as worn by the jester, or the Fool in the Tarot) as well as kings, emperors, and deities.
In the Bible, Joseph’s coat of many colors is the object of much envy.
ORANGE
Balance between spirit and sexuality; fertility and yet virginity; energy; the Sun; like yellow, orange is believed to be an appetite stimulant.
Orange has two aspects that we see time and time again, pivoting between the material and spiritual worlds, which is not surprising given that the color itself is a balance between red and yellow. As such, it represents the second chakra, the first being red, and the third, yellow.
PINK
Femininity, innocence, good health, love, patience.
Pink is the ultimate feminine color, being flirty, girlish, and innocent at the same time. Pale pink is used as the symbol for a baby girl, just as pale blue is used for baby boys. This feminine angle is why the color pink has been adopted as a symbol of gay pride. Pink is the color of universal, unconditional love.
PURPLE
Royalty and pomp; power, wealth, majesty.
Purple, or indigo, is the color associated with the sixth chakra. Since it was first discovered, purple has been the color of choice to denote wealth and power. Emperors, kings, and the more powerful members of the clergy—such as bishops—choose the colour as a way of defining their status. This is because the dye itself was originally available from one source and one source only; the secretions of a certain gland of an unfortunate sea snail called the Murex brandaris. Therefore, purple was extremely costly to produce and strictly the color of those who could afford it, since the dye itself was more expensive even than gold. The most popular shade of the color is called Tyrian Purple (named for the city of Tyre, where it was manufactured).
RED
Vitality and life-force; fire, the Sun, the South; blood; good luck and prosperity; power and authority; masculine energy; war and anger; passion, energy, sexuality.
One of the three primary colors, bright red pops out of whatever environment it happens to be in and grabs our attention more than any other color. Moreover, it is the first actual color that is seen by babies.
SAFFRON
Spirituality, holiness, good fortune.
Named after the saffron crocuses whose stigmas create the color, the harvesting of these delicate plant parts is a labor-intensive and time-critical matter and so the actual dye is costly to produce.
VIOLET
Knowledge and intelligence; piety, sobriety, humility, temperance; peace and spirituality.
Violet is the color associated with the seventh chakra. There are many shades of violet ranging from ethereal pale shades through to the darker mauve, considered the only color acceptable as a relief from the relentless strict mourning convention of black and gray in Victorian times. Violet is a combination of red and blue, and its association with temperance is indicated in some Tarot suits.
The humble qualities of violet as a color come from the flower. The tiny violet grows close to the ground, hidden modestly in among the grass, yet noticeable because of its striking color.
WHITE
Purity, virginity; death and rebirth, a beginning and an end; in the Far East, mourning.
White is both the absence of any color and the sum of all colors together, so in a sense it can mean everything or nothing. This combination of all colors has given white the name of the “many-colored lotus” in Buddhist teachings.
YELLOW
The Sun; power, authority; the intellect and intuition; goodness; light, life, truth, immortality; endurance; the Empire and fertility [China]; cowardice, treachery.
Yellow is one of the three primary colors and is related to the third chakra which lives in the region of the solar plexus. This is apt, since yellow, like red and orange, is one of the Sun colors. It could be argued that yellow is the most dazzling of the three, so the association makes good sense.
Because leaves turn yellow and then to black with the onset of fall, in several places, including Ancient Egypt, yellow is a color of mourning. A yellow cross was painted on doors as a sign of the plague, possibly for the same reasons, and even today yellow marks off a quarantined area.

What Is It Like in a *Posh* Moroccan Hammam? 🫧
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
When I say "posh," I mean upmarket hammams in a wealthy residential areas, not hammams in hotels. This post is about authentic hammams used by wealthy Moroccans, not ones aimed at tourists.
Decor
One of the first things you'll notice in upmarket hammams is that the decor is far more elaborate than in basic hammams. Decor will of course vary from place to place, but to use the example of the hammam next to my great-aunt's place in Casablanca I always make sure to go to:
The walls in both the main washroom and the sauna room are made out of blue and white marble in a traditional zellige pattern. There are also ornate sinks jutting out of the walls also of blue and white marble, whereas in basic hammams there will just be faucets. The sauna has long benches made of marble across the length of each side of the room, and the massage tables are slabs of heated light grey marble.
Regardless of the individual decor choices of each hammam, each building will always be spacious, with high ceilings and curved arches.
Ambience
Upmarket hammams feel luxurious, but understated, focusing on relaxation and subtle elegance rather than opulence and "wowing" people.
The lighting will normally be natural, but if artificial lighting is used it will be subtle and non-intrusive. Whereas in basic hammams it will be bright and practical, and in tourist hammams it will be dim with lighting coming from lanterns and candles (ambient, but not practical for visibility).
Although some may have private areas, authentic hammams in wealthy areas will generally follow the tradition of communal bathing.
As they are located in residential areas rather than tourist hotspots, and as they are a lot larger than basic hammams, they don't feel overcrowded and the experience is more intimate.
Services Offered
Upmarket hammams offer more services than basic hammams, but unlike tourist hammams, all the services are based in authentic Moroccan traditions, whereas in hotels the hammams offer a blend of the basic Moroccan services (sauna, sabon beldi, etc) and services similar to what you'd find in Western spas.
Authentic services you will find in upmarket Moroccan hammams include:
The usual sauna, cleansing with sabon beldi, deep exfoliation and ghassoul clay masks you'll find in every hammam in the country
Massages with argan oil, ghassoul clay, jasmine oil, amber oil, olive oil, honey, or herbal compresses
Herbal steam baths with tabrima, eucalyptus, lavender or mint
Rosewater and orange blossom water rinses
Henna treatments (it's not just used for temporary tattoos but has benefits for the skin and hair)
Facials with products like argan oil, sweet almond oil, honey, and saffron
Foot baths with herbs, oils, and/or milk
(Services will depend on each individual hammam)
The treatments are all high quality by staff who really work for their money. The attendants will scrub off absolutely every bit of dead skin on your body, and I have honestly never been as thoroughly massaged as I have been in these hammams.
Relaxation Lounge
In basic hammams, you just put your clothes on and leave after adjusting to room temperature, but in upmarket ones, you relax in the hammam after towelling off.
After you're dressed, the staff will lead you to another room. To use the hammam local to my great aunt as an example again, the relaxation lounge in this one:
Is full of white chaise longues, one facing another so that you can chat with your companion. They each have a low table in between them, on which a staff member will put down a silver tray, which will have a lit candle which will also have ghassoul clay integrated into it. There will also be glycerin preserved rose petals scattered on the tray, and of course refreshments - a bottle of cold water (much needed after all the heat and steam) and refreshing peppermint tea in a floral cup and matching saucer.
In other upmarket hammams they might have leather couches or armchairs instead of chaise loungues, regular candles without the clay, and Moroccan mint tea instead of peppermint herbal tea, but they'll all follow the same format.
Would I Recommend Trying One of These Hammams?
If you want a luxurious but 100% authentic hammam experience, absolutely! Although hotel hammams are surely fun with their swimming pools, etc, if you want to really experience true Moroccan culture and feel classy while you do it, I'd recommend finding one in a middle or upper class residential area.
They're also inexpensive if you're on Western wages - the one I described in the post is €4 for entry and €15 for a massage, and pretty much all similar hammams will be in that general wheelhouse. Whereas I have no doubt that the ones in hotels are way more expensive - the tourist price vs the local price.
Tips For Going to Authentic Hammams
Whereas in hotels the staff will speak multiple languages, in ones the locals use usually they'll know just Darija and French, maybe basic English but there's no guarantee. If you know French it will be fine, but if not get a Moroccan friend to accompany you.
Shave before going. The attendants will only exfoliate you if your skin is hairless, as the kessa glove can more effectively remove dead skin and impurities without hair in the way, and with smooth skin there's no chance of the rough gloves tugging on your hair and causing your skin to become irritated. The subsequent skincare products applied to your body will also be easier to apply evenly and will be better absorbed. If you haven't shaved beforehand they'll just give you a razor.
You can buy toiletries like soaps and towels, but it's also acceptable to bring your own.
Don't be afraid to get naked. Moroccan women strip down to their panties. Nobody will look at you, everyone is concentrating on bathing (wearing your bra or swimsuit is honestly more likely to bring attention to you than going topless as that's how people will know you're a tourist). You'll see many different body types and all ages in the hammam, so don't worry about being judged if you have stretch marks, extra weight, etc
Men and women bathe in separate areas or buildings, so don't worry about the opposite sex seeing you. You might occasionally see a mother taking her young son with her (as in, toddler age), but never older boys and men.
You can talk and laugh, but don't shout or giggle loudly or anything. It's meant to be a relaxing experience for everyone, and as the rooms are so spacious, loud noises will carry across them.
The massages are really thorough, so be prepared. I've been massaged everywhere from the insides of my ears to my privates in these hammams. If you have anywhere you'd rather they don't touch, communicate it with the massage therapist before getting your massage done, as the norm is to massage literally everywhere.

matching perfume/colognes to jjk characters...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
a/n: i did a bit of background research but i mostly went off gut feeling, and i'm no professional when it comes to fragrances and i haven't actually smelled any of these in person, so please correct me if i'm wrong about any of them!! i added fragantica links if anyone wants to check them out.
warnings: none.
characters: satoru gojo, suguru geto, kento nanami, choso kamo
Tumblr media
satoru gojo
i dunno why but i always picture gojo to smell kinda soapy?? not in a bad way but just a very clean, fresh, dove bar kinda smell. i can't picture him smelling overly masculine or mature, it just doesn't seem to fit how i view his personality and all that. i don't think he'd go for more juvenile smells either, but definitely something a bit lighter and fresher than heavy, musky colognes.
so for this i've matched him with prada amber pour homme. from what i could find, it has very soapy and clean notes of neroli and citrus as well as a bit of spice to it. it also supposedly smells very expensive and high quality, which i think would also fit as something for gojo to wear given the fact that he's, yk, fucking loaded.
suguru geto
geto has always given me earthy, oud-y vibes. probably the monk getup and that one figure of him with a smoking pipe. i feel like he'd smell of a woodsy, smokey incense with maybe just a teeny bit of playful floral - overall masculine and mature but with a bit of youthful playfulness.
for that, i've decided to match him with oud essentiel by guerlain. it's a unisex perfume that has top notes of agarwood, leather, and saffron. definitely gives vibes of mystery and luxury, it's described as a darker and heavier fragance with a nice bit of smokiness.
kento nanami
i can't help but imagine him with a very nice, simple, classic masculine fragance. i'm not really too much of a nanami girl (i get the appeal tho) but he seems like such a classic guy. musky and leathery scent for sure, with maybe a bit of light woodsiness.
givenchy gentleman feels like a good fit for nanami. from what i've read it's a very classy, masculine cologne. there's top notes of pepper and bergamot that give it a spicy sort of smell as well as a powderiness to it that then fades out after some wear. supposedly it's a very mature, masculine and 'daddy'ish cologne.
choso kamo
choso gives me kinda sweaty vibes. i say this with all my heart as a choso girlie, i think he smells at least a bit BO-y. not because i think he's dirty, but some people just sweat a lot, yk?
i think haute concentration by yves saint laurent. it's a masculine fragance that has some herbal notes that would work well with a BO smell rather than against it (mask the worst of it and enhance the muskiness). it also has citrus and spicy notes, which i think adds a fresher and more comforting touch, and is described as a slightly dated but still enjoyable sort of masculine scent.

Lore in progress, idk how to title this
Just blah blah blah proper name place name backstory stuff
There was this one girl in your high school, you kept eyeing her. Her style brought some of your attention to her, she looked as if she did ballet. She was one of those mean rich kids, so that's very likely. Luckily you never picked a bone with her and the two girls she always seemed to have around.
You knew she was mean, often you supported a wall listening how the three of them always had something pissy to say about a group of four girls, honestly, you thought it was deserved. The quartet was loud, goofy and cringy, never shutting up as if they had some main character complex. Hearing the arguments between them all was some sort of entertainment, because Sabine usually had a point calling them out for their childiness as her two minions had her back.
Such scenes had you wondering if she was actually friends with them. You never heard them talk outside those verbal fights and each break you saw her smoking outside of school, all alone. Nothing weird, you were there for the same reason, borrowed a cig from one another and walked away a few times, no other interactions with her at school whatsoever. You never had many on you, but it was that unspoken rule to return the favor back and forth, you knew how frustrating it was to be left hanging with no nic on a school day. While you always went for the lowest price, her were the good, expensive type. Cig is a cig, she never pointed the low quality of yours out, but hers just looked, smelled and tasted as if they were made of gold and saffron.
During early teens both of you went to the same summer camp around Moorland Stables. Few times you landed on the same dressage training group as her, got shot eight few insults towards your riding skills. It wasn't that deep, the frustration was understandable, she just did and said what she had to, for you to attempt getting your shit together.
For her it always looked as if she was a rider for a living, for you it was just a hobby and a way to kill some time during summer.
One year, she just didn't appear at the camp, neither did she the next year and the year after that. You only saw her in school for few more years, but after graduation it was as if she vanished. Probably went to some private college or whatever spoiled kids do to get into adult life.
As for you, you couldn't bother to get a degree. Your parents worked a lot, you've rarely seen them. Usual form of communication was some cash on the dining table with a note aside - “for the groceries”.
You didn't mind their absence much, as a teen you never got along well - any conversation turned into shouting whether was it the mess your room became or you lack of belief towards your fathers religion. Throughout the months of failed theraphy and medicine having effects worse than powdered sugar the communication in this so called ‘family’ regressed to them just keeping you alive and taking on more shifts.
It didn't last long, you worked a few part time jobs at once, one day you served coffee, another you fixed a bike or walked a neighbor's dog and watered their plants. A lot of tasks for your start in the adulthood. It wasn't necessary to be said, you didn't want to live with them, they didn't want you around either. As weeks passed in the rush of your working hours, you lived at your parents place and slowly raised your savings to get a place of your own.
It would take some time to get there and you did your best to hurry the process. What you didn't expect to rush so quickly was your folks’ lifetime.
Mid your shift at a local coffee shop you got a call - from the insurance company informing you about their passing.
Both fear and relief flew through you like a river. No explanation about the circumstances of their death.
You had to suck it up, it didn't upset you much, but it would be a lie to say it wasn't offsetting. Either way you had to make it to the end of your shift, you couldn't let your pay go to waste like that.
As you didn't have much time to attempt any grieving, you stood through your entire lunch break by the back door with the cheapest cigarettes and processed whatever you remembered from the phone call.
There was no sadness, or anger. As for a loss of supposedly close to you people, you didn't feel too much. More thinking than feeling the situation through - should you stay at their apartment? If you were to move out, where? Should you run a funeral? Give a speech during? Call other family members? A lot of questions and little answers. As little as remains of your cigarette pack. Ten minutes passed quickly and you had to return to work.
Throughout the few weeks you handled many phone calls, signed a lot of papers you didn't care to read through. Your mother's cousin took care of all the arrangements luckily for you. They also kept the ashes remaining from after the burial, which you didn't even witness. Tight working schedule and lack of sentiment resulted in you not going to the funeral of your parents.
Around a month later, which flashed by as you worked your ass of you found a letter by the main door of the cheap apartment you used to share with the recently deceased.
“From: Esmeralda Holdsworth
      to Odette Nobledew”
As you got out of your uniform you sat upon the no longer shared table and opened the envelope.
“Hello dear, I'm horribly sorry for your loss,
I deeply grieve over my daughter's passing as well as her husband's. I'm sure it's a hard time for all of us asnd I write to you with my intentions of help. Your mother mentioned how you were saving for your own place. I know it's difficult to exist in the place holding so many memories - good and bad. I talk with the Moorland's and we found a nice cottage for you. We all believe Jorvik and Aideen can bring peace upon one's mind and soul. I know you've only visited us for summer, but maybe you could consider exploring this beautiful island and learn to love it as much as we do.
 Hugs and condolences,
from your grandma and old friends.”
