Where We Once Were Pt. 3
For weeks now, You and Hermione were sneaking around now since your cousin and her friends would think you both flipped your lid but you didn’t think of that as you and her stood in one of the aisles of the library, looking in the books for Ancient Runes.
The library was your go to date place because of the fact if you were spotted here, you both could easily make up the excuse that it’s for your classes.
You were humming to yourself as you drug your fingers along the spines of the books. She was humming and tapping her foot along, off in her own world as she read a page from a book. You glanced at her, her eye brows furrowed as she read, eyes darting along the page.
You looked away before she caught you, it was her turn to look at you now. Noticing you fiddling with your reading glasses as you read the spines of the book, calmness radiating off of you.
You both silently wished you could go around like the other couples did. You couldn’t help but notice the slight her in her eyes when she saw a pair holding hands or sharing a quick kiss. But this is what you both chose.
She wasn’t ready to tell her friends and especially not Harry and Ron while you were trying to think of a way to break it it Draco. You had half a mind to threaten turning him into a fish and letting Hermione’s cat, Crookshanks, eat him like you told her you would. A mischievous smile and a restrained chuckle came to your face when you thought of this.
“What’s got you in a giggly mood?” Hermione asked, smiling at you.
“Oh just think about my buddy Crookshanks.”
She rolled her eyes, “You can’t feed transfigured people to my cat.”
“But if it came do-“
“It would make you a murderer and he would be an accomplice.” She laughed, eyes crinkling as she smiled.
“C’mon, it’s a nice thought.” You said nodding at her, hoping she’d back you up on it.
She playfully scoffed, “Is it now?” She closed her book as she walked close to you, where she’d pulled it from the shelf. You looked at her hand, she noticed you looking at her hand.
“May I hold your hand?” You ask, you typically cynical tone replaced by a soft, almost apologetic tone.
“Yes.”
You turned to face her, holding out your hand. She took it, curiosity on her face. When her comparatively dainty hand placed in yours, you spun her around as if you were dancing.
This awarded you a few giggles from her, her hand never leaving yours.
You wanted to stay in this moment forever but you were interrupted by a familiar voice of a ginger. She immediately dropped your hand, you pulled a random book from the shelf and she turned to the other side of the aisle, following your lead.
“Hermione, there you are.” Ron said, looking at her, Harry was following him.
“Oh hey Paul,” Harry said, acknowledging you.
“It’s Pollux.”
“Sorry.” The black haired boy said, in a way that you knew her meant it.
“Anyway,” Ron started, “Have you seen Scabbers? Do you think your damn cat has eaten him?” He asked Hermione.
She rolled her eyes, “Don’t blame Crookshanks just because your rat decided he had enough.
You couldn’t help but laugh, which caught the attention of the boys, “Hermione, why are you hanging out with him in the library?” Harry asked, looking you up and down.
You knew what was in the back of his mind: the look people gave you when they knew who you were. And the worst part is you couldn’t blame them.
“He’s in my Ancient Runes class.” She justified.
Ron looked at you, “Wait a minute, aren’t you Pollux Lestrange?”
Hermione rolled her eyes, “Honestly Ron, don’t you listen to conversations?”
Ron looked at you with what you could only define as jealousy. You weren’t worried about it though as you met his gaze. You knew when you were trying to be intimidated.
“So… What assignment are you doing in Ancient Runes?” Harry asked, watching the glaring between you and Ron.
You cut your eyes to him, “We are looking for anything that’ll give us an edge in our upcoming quiz. What’re you two doing here? Besides the runaway rat?”
Harry’s mouth turned into a guilty smile, “Well, We were actually going to ask Hermione if she could help us with our Care Of Magical Creatures homework?”
Out of the two of them, you already preferred Harry. You smiled, “Ah,” you turned to Hermione, “Well, if you want to help them, I need to go make sure my cousin hasn’t drowned the first year in the fountain.” You excused yourself.
Hermione nodded, “Bye Lux-“ she didn’t catch herself and you smiled to yourself as you walked away.
“Lux?” Ron asked, the three of them now walking to a nearby table.
“It is just a nickname, now what do you need help with exactly?”
She hoped that answer was convincing.
You walked through the common room door and saw a familiar head in platinum blonde hair in the couch. You sighed. “Draco, I just need you to listen. So I started hanging out with Hermione and I… I asked her out a while ago and she agreed: I know what you’re gonna say and what they’re gonna think but is it really worth mine and hers happiness’s?”
There was silence. You walked to the front of the couch, ready to yell at him.
He was asleep, mouth slightly open and book in his lap. Even in his sleep he looked fearful. You sighed as you grabbed a nearby blanket, unfolded it and draped it over him.
“Goodnight Draco.”

Gender and Harry Potter is such a hydra that just keeps revealing more heads the more you try and chop through it. Case in point: Today I just realized Harry Potter might've been originally intended as a book for boys, which if it was *wow*, way to miss the mark Joanne. Do you think it was actually intended for a male audience? To me it kinda makes sense if it was because of the way most women and girls are portrayed in it.
Bloomsbury Publishing definitely requested that JK Rowling publish with her (gender neutral) initials instead of 'Joanne Rowling' because they were concerned boys would not buy a book with a woman's name on the cover.
My guess is that her British publishers slotted it more firmly under 'boy' than her American publishers did. Harry Potter is 100% a school story, a super established British children's book genre. Historically, there are boy school stories (set in all-male posh public schools) and girl school stories (set in all-female posh public schools.) Hogwarts is of course co-ed, but that fact that it comes out of a literary tradition in which all the characters are the same gender... might help explain why in-universe gender politics seem remarkably absent from the wizarding world.
It actually kind of bugs me, when a canon-compliant fic makes a big deal about male-only inheritance or something, because that's just not something we see. There's one line about "Black family tradition" saying that the house goes to the next oldest guy, but since Dumbledore is worried that *Bellatrix* is about to inherit, it clearly isn't that important.
JKR has made a fantasy society where gender doesn't really matter - Augusta Longbottom and Walburga Black are clearly the powerful matriarchs of their respective families, Maxime and McGonagall are headmistresses, no problem. There isn't the boys quidditch team vs girl's quidditch team, the locker rooms and the prefects bathroom seem to be co-ed, "robes" are gender neutral, there isn't a sense that a specific discipline or type of magic is gendered (we see both male and female Transfiguration, Care of Magical creatures, and Defense Against the Dark arts professors...) There is kind of a sense that the boys are supposed to ask the girls to the yule ball... but multiple girls still ask out Harry. Gender comes up a lot in these books yes, but not so much in the actual worldbuilding. We have gendered bathrooms and dorms, and the rule that the girls can go into the boy's dormitory, but not vice-versa. Ron considers lace a girly fabric. Of the top of my head, that's all of the "gendered" rules I can think of.
But, since the main character is a boy, it makes sense that her British publishers would slot it more into the category of "school story (boy)" and market accordingly. I think it's extremely likely that she was asked to lean more heavily into quidditch, an aspect of the world building that JKR is clearly not interested in. She's said multiple times that she dislikes writing quidditch games - which is why she throws in comedy with the commentary, or makes some magical thing go down, or finds ways to cancel quidditch entirely. The mechanics and tension of the game *itself* are not interesting to her. I think it's also possible this is a reason for Hermione's relatively late intro into the friend group during Book 1? Harry can be friends with a girl, but first we need to establish that Ron is his *best* friend.
But then the books hit America, and the whole "school story" thing didn't read as "boy" as much as it just read "British." There was a sense in American advertising, especially in the 90s, that girl's products were for girls, but boy's products were for everyone. Scholastic Publishing seemed less interested in gendering the book, and more interested in making sure it didn't come off as too high-brow to American children - so we get the name change from "Philosopher's Stone" to "Sorcerer's Stone," things like that.
But then right before the publication of Book 4 the series exploded, and JKR could have just self-published the thing if her publishers didn't behave. So I think that you can see the fingerprints of that marketing push on Book 1, which grandfathered in a number of worldbuilding choices that JKR maybe wouldn't have made later. But pretty quickly it just became JKR doing her thing.

Hi Im sure you answered this already but i sadly cant find it: how did end up shipping or rather writing drarry fics?
I've actually been asked quite a few times why I ship H/D. I never answer, because it's complicated and long and I have an essay on the subject, so I'll answer the 'how' question without addressing the 'why'.
Once upon a time, the internet was becoming a thing that people used regularly. The news kept talking about how the youths of the day were "surfing the 'net" and this was going to be the new normal. As usual, I could not identify with the 'youths of the day,' even though I was one. What could possibly be of interest to me on the internet? Reading books was far better than talking to other people. Then one day in my senior year of high school it dawned on me that you could possibly talk to other people about books, something I had never done before, as I didn't know anyone but my parents and brothers who ever read for fun, and my parents and brothers did not like to read things like Jane Austen. What if there were people on the 'net who liked Jane Austen??? Seemed fake, but I gave it a try.
The first Jane Austen website I found was Republic of Pemberley, which hosted something they called "Bits of Ivory." Through the "Ramble" board on Republic of Pemberley, I found out that there were "Bits of Ivory" elsewhere. It was called fanfic and hosted on fanfic.net.
Almost all of it that I was introduced to was Harry Potter fic, as HP was the megafandom of the time, and my Sense and Sensibility friend was obsessed with Snape, mainly because of Alan Rickman. I was also obsessed with Snape, though I must say that even though I had been obsessed with Alan Rickman since 1995, I never did like his casting as Snape and still don't. Anyway, I ended up getting interested in Snape/Hermione fic, and continued to be interested on and off for over the next five years.
I should pause at this moment to say that I had been writing fanfic since the fourth grade. I didn't know it was called fic. I didn't know other people did it. It never occurred to me to share it. When I found "Bits of Ivory" it actually took me a while to process that the stories there were in a similar vein to the stories I had been writing all my life, stories based on fiction by other people. It was just so wild to me that anyone would share that stuff, as though other people would want to read the different endings that they came up with, the self-inserts and the cross-overs they came up with.
I should also take this moment to say that I didn't really have slash ships. I was aware that slash existed, and I thought it was great. Sirius/Remus was a background ship everywhere at the time, and even though I didn't really see it in canon and wasn't terribly interested in it, I thought it was a nice thing. And when I started getting into X-Men through Wolverine/Rogue, it seemed obvious to me that Professor X and Magneto had a past sexual relationship. I, in fact, had an original story that I'd started writing in eleventh grade that had similar tension between two male characters, and the idea that they were in love and unable to have sex about it explained so much. And I wrote more original stories in college that were gay.
I think my problem was that the canons I was consuming were quite straight, and while I wasn't obsessed with writing canon-compliant fics, I was (and still am, to some extent) obsessed with writing characters who were true to canon. At the time sexuality seemed some kind of immutable thing to me that was deeply a part of who a character was. Also, sex to me was very Other; it meant something really deep and serious about you that obliterated other things you were. For instance, I was frustrated with all the Frodo/Sam porn, because I felt it obliterated their beautiful friendship and made their relationship about sex and being gay rather than the deep pure bond of friendship. So I was maybe kind of homophobic and confused.
Then I fell in love with Buffy the Vampire Slayer, and while that canon has a lot of heteronormativity, it not only has a character who thought she was straight who realizes she's gay, it also has vampires who have lived for centuries and who have broken every kind of social norm that exists. It seemed silly to me to assume that Spike or Angel were straight, which is how I began shipping Spike/Angel, which is how I got absolutely obsessed with slash. It was so liberating to write porn where the power dynamic wasn't influenced by centuries of patriarchy! It was so liberating to write porn where I didn't have to think about my own anatomy or gender or position in a sexual dynamic! It was so liberating to write porn with a bunch of dicks!
Having discovered slash, I turned back to ye olde faithful fandom, which had ten billion fics about everything. I'm not sure I even tried Sirius/Remus, because I was still so uninterested in it, but now I read all the Snape slash, the majority of which seemed to be Harry/Snape. The thing is, I don't ship Harry/Snape. It can be very hot! But while the porn is fine and some of the stories are fun, these are not two people that I want to live happily ever after. I just think that the power dynamic between them, the history they have, and the personalities they are do not make me want to imagine them as a couple with a happy marriage who occasionally have the friends over for games of Quidditch and Exploding Snap. And while I like queer complicated, angsty stories, I also like a happy ending in a semi-heteronormative sense, especially for Harry Potter, who really seems to want one. So, I started looking for other Harry Potter slash.
I knew that Harry/Draco was a juggernaut pairing, but I just hated Draco Malfoy so much. I honestly could not stand him. I used to go about saying that I hated him not only as a person (like, I also hated Snape as a person; he's a dick, and he's cruel to children! But he's a great character) but as a character. I just didn't like the function he played in the narrative. I like big, dramatic rivalries and evil vs good; meanwhile, Draco Malfoy is a little worm. So I kept thinking about reading HP slash, but resisting.
Then, one day, I was sleeping on the couch, and woke up suddenly with the idea that Draco Malfoy could be reformed. He could be sorry for all the shitty things he's done! He could be really apologetic! He could be really trying to make up for his past, and Harry could find this truly beautiful, and they could have sex about it!
Surprisingly, it was hard to find fic about this. For some reason, in most of the fic, it was Harry having to earn Malfoy's approval, instead of the other way around, which I found absolutely bonkers. But I eventually found Eclipse, by Mijan, which was just what I wanted. Then I was obsessed and was reading every Harry/Draco fic I could find.
Eventually, I even read the ones in which Harry was a cad and Draco Malfoy was a perfect snowflake who never did anything wrong. And then I started finding fics that really emphasized that Draco had a very different point of view of what happened, which showed that he really had no way to understand who Harry was, or what Harry had been through. In these fics, Harry had to do some work to understand Draco, which is what really sold me on the pairing. I still want fics in which Draco has to do a lot of heavy lifting to address his past and deal with the hurt he has caused and the violence of his previously genocidal outlook, but I love it when Harry, too, has to adjust. After saving the world and losing most people he loves and protecting the innocent and doing his exhausted little best to be honest and righteous and true, Harry Potter still has to do work, again, to overcome his past and find a peaceful life. And that's what made me start writing Harry/Draco, the end.

. And them continuing to claim it was new throughout the song
. As I expected, I almost cried during Not Alone. Also apparently Darren thought it was going to be a big hit??? And just begrudgingly let them use it for A Very Potter Musical
. Super Friends!
. So sad Jeff’s mic was so quiet for “I WANNA BE A MODERN DANCER”
. THEY SUNG WANNABE BY THE SPICE GIRLS
. The fakeout of everyone leaving stage, then the band coming back on and playing the start of Goin' Back To Hogwarts
. “Darren's not here”
“I'LL DO IT”
. THE AUDIENCE DID THE FIRST PART OF GOIN' BACK TO HOGWARTS ALL BY OURSELVES
. JEFF DID DYLAN'S PART (but he didn't do “All of you to [city name] :( )
. Jeff pointed at various parts of the audience for “Welcome hotties, nerds and tools!” and then whispered “I'm so sorry” immediately after
. Singing (/ shouting) Goin' Back To Hogwarts along with hundreds of other Starkid fans was so exhilarating, I loved it and I almost cried (also I'm gonna be so hoarse tomorrow)

Treatment of female characters in fandom
Fandom Hot Take That Isn't At All New
The floor is open for debate, feel free (but do so respectfully, yeah?). This is a pattern I notice when exploring both old and new fandoms and that’s the perception of the highest-ranking female character, with rank as in protagonist vs love interest vs secondary vs tertiary character. Upon a massive paradigm-shift I just had about Percabeth.
There is a tendency, at least as I see it, within fandom to skew in favor of the female protagonist in fanfic instead of dumping her for the two hottest male characters. This happens when the female hero is a wish-fulfilment type. As most fanfic is written by women, this tracks. The audience loves her whether she sucks or not because she's them, and they write smut and romance for her because they want to live through her. They're very forgiving to female leads in and even if the fandom argues over her, she’s still the center of the largest ships. She’s the hero, and odds are, the most popular ship is the canon pairing, with some exceptions like Zutara.
If she’s not the protagonist, look at any fandom with a male lead and she’s probably dumped for the top five hottest men in the story for non-canon pairings. She has very little slack in the fandom and is subject to incredibly critical views. She has to be on point or better than her male counterpoints (ex: Katara) to be in the top ship for the fandom, or her canon ship with the male protagonist is just that old that it predates everything else (ex: Annabeth). Why? Because they're almost always less compelling than the hero's next closest male connection, because the writer wrongfully assumes that “it’s romance, you get, it I don’t need to put in the effort” but they do have to convince you why the friendship or rivalry exists. But also, because of how fandom treats female love interests.
I don’t read a ton of original fiction romance and when I do, it’s always a lady lead. If I look up fanfic for a series and I personally think the main romance is meh, she’s still there all over the archive (TOG, Twilight, Red Queen, Outlander, Star Wars Sequels, Max Ride etc). If I look up a fandom with the same quality of problematic romance, she’s tarred and feathered by virtue of being the love interest even if her character is as deep or as compelling as her contemporaries in other works where she’s the hero instead.
As in, if Edward was the protagonist of Twilight, the majority pairing would be Edward/Jacob while Bella would be absolutely despised. Same exact personality, same exact role in the story, it’s just told from Edward’s perspective (which I know exists I’m talking the actual book Twilight). People already hate the Star Wars Sequels, but if they were the exact same movies except Kylo was the POV character, “fans” might’ve bullied Daisy Ridley so much that they killed off her character—looking at you, Supernatural fandom.
Not every single lady love interest. Astrid/Hiccup is the most popular ship on AO3 for HTTYD. Astrid is a badass character and far more than a love interest and a perfect example of writers who worked hard to make it believable (and also there’s no one really second to Astrid within the story in terms of depth and screentime, except Toothless… which is the next most popular ship so). But even when she's pretty universally loved by the fandom (ex. Hermione) that doesn't guarantee her top billing if she has a male rival for screentime.
I don’t know if it’s just different fans who pick up these different genres or double standards for female characters but it’s pretty consistent. It might just be that readers can live vicariously though a cardboard narrator but get incredibly protective of the male lead and who’s allowed to court him when they can’t. I had this debate with somebody a while ago and they argued that it simply comes down to fanfic writers getting attached to the few female protagonists they're allowed to have. But like. This is across all genres, and the idea that fans starved of female heroes will only like them if they're the main hero and not the secondar hero is not the pro-women slam-dunk that person thought it was.
I also only really participate in fandom where it concerns fanfic and not live online discourse. I write male protagonists as a female author because it’s just what I grew up reading more and I like the action adventure genre far more than the romance genre, which is usually helmed by male heroes, but my writer catalogue is nearly 60/40.
It says something pretty loud and clear about the state of Percabeth which had ten years on Solangelo, to have the gap closed between them, with some disclaimers: I’m only looking on AO3 and Percabeth predates the surge in popularity of AO3 vs FFN where Solangelo hit at the perfect time. The third most important character in the PJO books kept changing from book to book (Grover, Thalia, Luke, Rachel, Zoe, etc), so Annabeth was the only ship option, she had no big competition.
But even then, when I go out of my way looking for good Percabeth fics, they’re just not there. The ship might technically be the most popular in that it populates in the most fics, but it’s not as front and center as Solangelo, and there’s way less canon content for Solangelo. If Will had been a girl, Solangelo would not be the fandom juggernaut that it is. If Annabeth was a man and Percabeth was a gay ship, she'd probably have a lot less hate with the exact same abusive personality, simply because she'd be a man and male characters will always have more leeway.

🌦️This is it, folks! The last weekly wrap-up post of HP Drizzle 2024!🌦️
We've had ANOTHER week of incredible works! Check out week 1 and week 2, too!
We'll post the revealed masterlist in a few days, once we've had time to properly soak in all these wonderful creations! What have been some of your favourites? ☀️ See the final week's works below the cut! ☀️
☔ Downpour [Art, G, Digital]
💧Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy 💧Summary: This art goes along with today's second work, Pleuvoir, Vouloir, l’Espoir. Prompt: Harry and Draco are babysitting Teddy when a magical storm passes through, rendering all magic useless. The two have to take care of Teddy the muggle way.
☔ Pleuvoir, Vouloir, l'Espoir [Fic, T, 20282]
💧Pairing: Harry Potter/Draco Malfoy 💧Summary: Harry thought he’d just be looking after Teddy for the afternoon. Having Draco Malfoy as his co-babysitter was NOT what Harry had signed up for – especially when there’s a freak magical storm, a rain-soaked Malfoy, and more French than Harry can handle.
☔ A Rainbow in My Sky [Fic, T, 22862]
💧Pairing: Harry Potter/Severus Snape 💧Summary: Suddenly, the bowl spun, the insides glowed, and it emitted a burst of magic. A pair of vivid green eyes materialised inside the silver interior. "Hello," a slightly high-pitched male voice said. Severus choked back a gasp, released the bowl and stumbled backwards, his long black hair falling over his face. "Ow." The eyes darted left and right around the bowl's lips. "Why did you drop me? That hurt." Severus pointed his wand, "You teenage imbeciles have gone too far!" “Hey, why are you shouting and pointing that stick at me?” The bowl shook on the ground, and the blue lights pulsed. Green eyes suddenly rose like floating lights, eying their surroundings. "Are you my companion? My name is Harry; it's nice to meet you!"
☔ Birthday Rain [Fic, G, 2755]
💧Pairing: Scorpius Malfoy/Albus Severus Potter 💧Summary: It's Albus Potter's dreaded 15th birthday party, and all he wants is for he and Scorpius to just be left alone.
☔ Split In Half Will Have To Do [Fic, T, 2755]
💧Pairing: Amy Benson/Original Male Character, Amy Benson & Dennis Bishop, Amy Benson & Tom Riddle 💧Summary: Amy has spent her entire adult life chasing clear skies.
☔ The Pleasure's in Walking Through [Fic, E, 7739]
💧Pairing: Ginny Weasley/Hermione Granger 💧Summary: Sometimes summers felt like melting. This one did, especially when Hermione visited.
☔ A Line-storm Song [Fic, E, 12626]
💧Pairing: Draco Malfoy/Harry Potter 💧Summary: Harry holds it together for five years after the war. Well—he sort of holds it together. Then his Auror partner Pansy Parkinson says it’s going to rain.
☔ Worth the hike [Fic, T, 1587]
💧Pairing: Sirius Black/Mary Macdonald 💧Summary: “I don’t want to go back to taking exams and…” She let the uncertainty of the future trail off into the crash of the waterfall. “Well, we could just stay here, but we’ll run out of cigarettes,” Sirius said.

Title: Consuming Shadows
Fandom: Harry Potter - J. K. Rowling
Rating: Mature
Relationships: Harry Potter/Tom Riddle | Voldemort, Harry Potter/Original Male Character(s), Harry Potter/Tom Riddle
Characters: Harry Potter, Tom Riddle | Voldemort, Lily Evans Potter, Draco Malfoy, Lucius Malfoy, Original Female Character(s), Original Male Character(s), Hermione Granger, Sirius Black
Additional Tags: Beauxbatons Harry, Powerful Harry, Grey Harry, Alive Lily, Dead James, Alternate Universe - Canon Divergence, Mind Games, Triwizard Tournament, Slow Burn, Slow Build, Other Additional Tags to Be Added, Academic Harry
Chapters: 59/63
Chapter Summary:
Gorgeous. Utterly gorgeous.
Voldemort sat back in his seat and released a long, measured breath. His teeth skimmed along his bottom lip, a weakness he allowed only because there was no one around him that did not already know.
He felt…satiated. Brimming with the satisfaction of a thirsty man finally quenched; a sinner given that first addicting sip of ambrosia and who now craved the whole cup. His blood was alight with the intensity of his need, and Voldemort had always been gluttonous when feeding his own desires. More was the philosophy he subscribed to, and this would be no different.
Hadrian would be no different.
Just as he had predicted, the boy had performed exceptionally, demonstrating such exquisite magical potential, and reaffirming everything Voldemort had already known. True, he had made mistakes, taken hits he should have avoided, and that would be discussed at length between them – but he had won.
And what a victory it was.

I wrote this silly little thing for a graded final and I figured I’d share…
Allied Authordom: Rowling vs. Riordan
By Serena Martinez
Allyship does not demand perfection, but rather desire to grow. We are all unlearning internalized -phobias and -isms which have been normalized in society. The key to true allyship is recognizing you have the capacity to cause harm, do the work to be better, and consciously avoid hurting someone that way again.
Given the upcoming television adaptations of both J.K. Rowling and Rick Riordan’s popular series, I am going to use them as a case study example. The hoards of Millennials and Gen Zers that grew up with either or both series are now young adults with the ability to think critically and set their own moral principles. I am not sure I know someone in my age range who hasn’t at least watched a Harry Potter movie and most of my friends are eagerly following the new release of the Percy Jackson Series (December 20th!!!). As much as I wish people would turn towards new POC authors who are trailblazing their own paths of authordom, I know many are still tied to the nostalgia of the past.
When first published, neither series included diversity up to today’s standards. Both trios were completely composed of white cisgender people: a male protagonist, a male best friend and sidekick, and a female friend and potential love interest. Although Riordan intentionally made Percy neurodivergent to depict the experiences of his real life son and Rowling crafted the entire series to support species equality, the core representation remained the same. That doesn’t even include Rowling’s problematic stereotyping of the werewolves and goblins who were based on people with HIV/AIDS and Jewish communities respectively. Riordan and Rowling’s subsequent elaboration (or lack thereof) on their respective universes showcases the difference between them as authors and allies.
Rowling has essentially never budged from her original position on representation in her series. To her, making Hermione Black in the theatrical adaptation of the series and retroactively admitting Dumbledore is gay was enough to show she is a proper liberal ally. Many would deem this too little too late, especially given the stereotypes used to describe people of color in the series like Kingsley Shacklebolt and Cho Chang. Rowling showcases prime examples of tokenization without ever addressing such simplistic character depth over two decades after the series’ publication.
Then, of course, there is the significant harm caused by Rowling’s unapologetic transphobia. She has only doubled down since her first transphobic tweet in 2020 by publishing a book about a cisgender man dressing as a woman to murder people (emboldening the false and harmful narrative of the trans predator), donating to anti-trans companies and legislatures, and claiming that continued support of the Harry Potter Universe is proof that people are in support of her transphobia views.
I think Rowling could have come out of this unscathed had she admitted her books were a product of her time and apologized for her wrongdoing to the trans community. Instead, she has only chosen to dig her heels into hatred. Suffice it to say Rowling is the bad example of allyship amongst these two authors.
Riordan, on the other hand, heard readers’ criticism of his predominantly white and straight series and returned with a sequel including complex characters not defined by their racial, gendered, and sexual diversity. Riordan’s central characters in subsequent series were Latini, Creole, Chinese, Native American, Muslim, bisexual, and genderfluid. His newest book that follows a gay couple from the original Percy Jackson universe is co-authored with a queer writer because Riordan did not want to attempt to portray an experience so distinct from his own. When Leah Jeffries who plays Annabeth Chase in the new TV series experienced racism from fans online, Riordan published a statement calling out the behavior. Since interviews have started he has continued to ensure she is supported. Rick Riordan is certainly imperfect but has continued to use his privileged platform to uplift voices rather than misrepresent or silence them.
While Rowling uses Twitter to corral an army of transphobes that dox anyone who looks gender non conforming in their profile picture, Riordan uses his platforms to vocally confront hatred. The same year Rowling mocked gender inclusive language for people who menstruate, Riordan was staunchly calling out transphobes criticizing genderfluidity in his series.
It is not enough to just magically make characters different identities because doing so erases the complexity of each experience and makes representation a farce.
Onto the question everyone has been waiting for: what does this mean for the T.V. series?
This is not just about allyship. This is about how Rowling continues to harm trans communities during a time where they are already experiencing heightened levels of violence.
Do NOT watch the HBO Harry Potter series or anything where Rowling gets streams and thus money! Illegally stream it. Watch the old movies on DVDs you already own. But every view pads her wallet and her ego, emboldening her to fund and support transphobia globally.
Reread the Percy Jackson series in preparation for the much awaited television show. Delve into Harry Potter fanfiction which doesn’t line the pockets of the Author Who Shall Not Be Named. Try new series from queer authors of color who deserve to be platformed far more than Rowling ever did.

A, B, D, U, V :)
Hey, anon, thanks for te asks!
A: Ships that you currently like a lot (doesn't have to be OTPs). Friendships, pairings, threesomes etc are allowed.
Well, I've been a hardcore Bellamort fan since I read book 5 back in 2000-whatever-it-was, so there's that.
I also ship Tomarry, because the banter is hilarious and I love my boys.
And Drarry, because why not.
But what's a problem is how much I ship Delphi/Harry. It's a real struggle, because it's so problematic, so wrong, and yet I love them together SO MUCH. I need to write about like, right now. Goodbye sleep, you shall be missed.
B: A pairing -platonic, romantic, sexual - that you originally didn't consider, but someone changed your mind.
Can't... think... of any...? We might have to come back to that later xD
D: A pairing you wish you liked but just can't.
Anything with Snape is just icky. I'm sure people have written a lot of intelligent, deep fanfiction with him, but I can't like it, can't read it. If you like it, enjoy!
U: Three favourite characters from three different fandoms, and why they're your favourites.
Harry Potter fandom: Tom Riddle/Voldemort, Bellatrix and Harry. Cause the first two are supercool villains with deep feelings, and because Harry is an amazing kid with commendable moral fibre. Could go on, but I don't exactly think that our likes and dislikes are rational choices, so there's not much point in thinking about it.
Peaky Blinders fandom: Tommy Shelby, Alfie Solomons and Polly Grey. Tommy Shelby is the same as Tom Riddle, right? Incredibly smart, they have no limitations (heh, see what I did there?) either realistically or morally. Alfie has great chemistry with Tommy because Cillian and Tom (is tom the name of the game today?!) have great chemistry, but he's also a reflection of the same characteristics on a different coin. Polly in the first seasons is the backbone of the family, ran the business while the boys were at war and has hilarious lines that I wish I could tell my male friends. Also Helen McRory was an awesome actress.
The Life and Times of $crooge McDuck fandom: Scrooge McDuck, "Glittering" Goldie O'Gilt and Howard Rockerduck (John Rockerduck's father) If you're unfamiliar with the monumental work of Don Rosa, do yourself a favour and check it out, it's not just a comic book, it's... something beyond words. I love Scrooge for his work ethic, love of his family and strongheadedness. And who doesn't love the only duck that melted his heart, Glittering Goldie? I have a budgie named Scrooge, and he had the largest sideburns you could imagine! And I respect Howard Rockerduck, because despite making poor choices, being a rich dick on the surface and the likes, he still has a warm heart. His double cameo apperaaance were a very welcome surprise in the saga.
V: Which character do you relate to the most?
I've already replied I relate to Hermione on the surface, but disgraced Bellatrix speaks more to my soul. Perhaps I should talk a bit about the character whose pseudonym I use online, meaning Jack Dawkins, aka The Artful Dodger. I'm not a pickpocketing orphan, but I strongly relate to a child that grew up too fast, tried to play the adult and things didn't go exactly as planned.

: ̗̀➛ who i write for!
hello! so if you look back on my blog a little bit (not very far because i haven't been very active on this account in years basically), you can see that i've already posted a few fics with it (2017) characters as the love interests. i'm not going to take those down because i'm actually pretty proud of them, but there are lots of other characters i want to write for now. so, here's a list!

lorenzo berkshire
pansy parkinson
draco malfoy
neville longbottom
cedric diggory
fred weasley
george weasley
oliver wood
harry potter
ron weasley
hermione granger
i will also probably be dabbling in a few oc fics, because i have quite a lot of original characters and want to write for them as well!
so, those are all the characters i can think of right now, but if i were you i would expect this list to be updated, not necessarily often but also not never? there are lots of shows that i would like to write for, but at the moment this is just the shows and movies that i could think of off the top of my head. if there's a particular character you want me to write for, you can send it in and i'll let you know if i know that character!
ALSO! i will only be writing for fem!reader and not male reader or gender neutral reader, because i am neither of those and, although i want everything i write to be as inclusive as possible, i don't want to accidentally misrepresent those people, so i'll be sticking to fem!reader because i am a female person and that's all i know!
thanks so much for reading! my first thing will probably be some headcanons because i have some ideas, so expect that soon!

Hi! I’m currently looking for new roleplay partners for Harry Potter and related sub-fandoms! I’m only looking for partners 18+ as I am an adult in my mid 20s. Please no time wasters!
I’m pretty active (try to reply multiple times a day!) but I do work full time in a bar/nightclub while training for my vocation so my hours in work do vary and tend to be later in the day. I’m looking for at least one reply a day and good communication (I love it when rp partners become my friends!!)
I only write literate - novella (no one liners!) and only in third person. Saying this, I need someone who is understanding as I am dyslexic and sometimes my spelling and grammar is off as a result!
I’m looking for the following:
People comfortable in playing male canon characters against female original characters from golden trio era, marauders era, next gen and Hogwarts Legacy (I’m happy to discuss doubling!) I’m mostly looking for Regulus Black, Ominis Gaunt, Sebastian Sallow, Theodore Nott, Tom Riddle and Teddy Lupin HOWEVER I am also interested in hearing who you would pair with my characters.
I’m also interested in exploring some original character x original character pairings for all dynamics m x f, m x m, f x f so please message me with your original character if that is something you’re interested in!
Finally, I’m interested in some canon x canon pairings.
Jegulily/Regulily - I’d play Lily
Wolfstar - I’m happy to play either
Dramione - I’d play Hermione
Romione - I’d play Hermione
Theta (FB) - I’d play Leta
Please like this post or reach out and say hi if you’re interested!
