“The End of an Era:” Henry Fambrough, the Last of the Original Spinners, Dies at 85
Henry Fambrough, who at 85 was the last surviving original member of the Spinners, has died, the band said.
Fambrough died Feb. 7; no cause was given.
Fambrough was “the captain of our ship,” said the Spinners, who continue to tour with no founders after the baritone’s 2023 retirement.
“Fambrough’s transition marks the end of an era,” the band said.
The group that would become the Spinners formed in 1954 as the Domingoes. After changing their name, the band logged more than a dozen hits including “I Don’t Want to Lose You,” “Mighty Love,” “Could it be I’m Falling in Love,” “The Rubberband Man” and “Working My Way Back to You” for the Motown and Atlantic labels.
“We are deeply honored to have been a part of his journey, and we are committed to ensuring that his legacy continues to inspire generations to come,” the Motown Museum said in a statement
“Though his voice may have quieted, Henry Fambrough’s music will live on through the ages.”

Song of the Day: October 11, 2024
The Spinners: Rubberband Man Rubberband Man on Amazon Prime Music It’s funky Friday! Continuing my focus on artists who died in 2024, today I present a song that I loved as a child. “Rubberband Man” was as close to a novelty song as The Spinners ever recorded, but it still holds up if you want to listen to some old school disco funk. Henry Fambrough was the baritone for the famed R&B vocal…

R.I.P. to Henry Fambrough and the Spinners; Motown put them on the map, Atlantic put them in the Hall of Fame
Henry Fambrough (1938-2024) was the last of the original legendary Spinners, now he’s gone. Here’s a tribute to one of the greatest groups of all time.
(February 9, 2024). With Henry Fambrough’s passing at his home in Sterling, Virginia on Wednesday (Feb. 7) from natural causes, the legendary Detroit-based soul and pop group The Spinners has lost its last surviving founding member. Fambrough, who was with the group when it was first known as the Domingoes, was its longest-serving member, essentially remaining with the Spinners from its founding…

Singer Henry Hambrough has died at 85. He was a founding member of the Motown vocal group The Spinners, who were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame this past Fall.
They had quite a few hits including "It's a Shame". They had more than a few pop culture moments including appearing in a 1983 episode of Laverne and Shirley and doing the title song for Spaceballs.

Bobby Smith
Remembering Robert "Bobby" Smith (April 10, 1936 - March 16, 2013) Singer notable as the principal lead singer of the classic Motown/Philly group, The Spinners,, throughout its history. The group was formed circa 1954 at Ferndale High School in Ferndale, Michigan, just north of the Detroit border. The group had their first record deal when they signed with Tri-Phi Records in early 1961.Smith had been the group's lead singer since its inception, having sung lead vocals on The Spinners first hit record in 1961, "That's What Girls Are Made For" (which has been inaccurately credited to the group's mentor and former Moonglows lead singer, the late Harvey Fuqua). Smith also sang lead on most of their Motown material during the 1960s, such as the charting singles like "Truly Yours" (1966) and "I'll Always Love You" (1965); almost all of the group's pre-Motown material on Fuqua's Tri-Phi Records label, and also on The Spinners' biggest Atlantic Records hits. These included "I'll Be Around", "Could It Be I'm Falling in Love", "They Just Can't Stop It the (Games People Play)".[6] In 1974, they scored their only #1 Pop hit with "Then Came You" (sung by Smith, in a collaboration with superstar Dionne Warwick).Despite the fact that Smith led on many of the group's biggest hits, many have erroneously credited most of the group's success to its other lead singer, the late Philippé Wynne, who didn't join The Spinners until well over a decade after they had formed. (Henry Fambrough also sang lead on some of the Spinners' songs.) The confusion between Smith and Wynne may be due to the similarities in their voices, and the fact that they frequently shared lead vocals on many of those hits.
