Can - Volkshalle Wagtzenborn-Steinberg, Giessen, October 22, 1971
There's been an outpouring of love + appreciation for the one and only Damo Suzuki since his passing last week. A guy who did it his way from beginning to end — and we are all the better for it! Over on Aquarium Drunkard, I added my voice to the chorus and shared this sweet tape from early-ish in Damo's Can tenure ("That German band," as Suzuki would later refer to them). I believe it's a speed-corrected/remastered version, so even if you're familiar with the performance, you might want to check it out anyway. Whatever, it is another one of those unbelievable Can performances — totally beyond category.
Damo says: I don’t want take any responsibilities for other than just myself. Everybody has their own capacity for creativity and everybody is making something on the stage. Making music is not important. For me, it’s about making energy on the stage. Because energy is the beginning of all sources. That’s why I like to leave the roots of music-making itself. Because it’s just energy and communication.

Japanese musician Damo Suzuki (1950-2024) who died today-10th of Feb 2024. Suzuki found his metier when he moved to Germany and between 1970 and 1973 when he was the drummer and vocalist for 'krautrock' group Can. I was a child of the 70's, and I came to be in awe of all that spacey music that built itself slowly around jams where the whooshy noises and whispered vocal communicated with me very clearly. So please left click here to hear his drumming and vocals in the classic Can album, 'Future Days'.
