I had snakebites briefly when I was 14..? but had to take them out because my a nurse at my cardiologists office told me due to my heart defect I was at risk for endocarditis (we were under the impression she had asked him herself?). When I went in for my regular check up a year or two later my cardiologist said it actually wasn’t a concern and they had even stopped recommending preventative antibiotics for teeth cleaning as well.

God I swear I’m not trying to be all doom and gloom talking about my health I know it’s annoying I just really need a break and everyone irl is already done with my shit bc I’ve been too anxious to go back to the doctor bc the last one told me I’d just have to deal with it and potentially get more surgeries and I’m 23 dude. It took nearly 3 years before my doctor even agreed that that surgery was necessary and it didn’t even fully fix my shit it just lessened the pain — which I’m grateful for, don’t get me wrong! But I haven’t had full limb function in my left arm since I was 15 and they made it sound like the surgery would fix it and then acted like I was overreacting when it didn’t. And my left leg has been deeply fucked for nearly as long, and at least slightly fucked at least since I hit double digits, and has gotten progressively worse. So like I know, I get it that I need to go to a doctor, but why would it go better now? What’s going to make a doctor take me seriously now?
I want to be angry, but I’m too tired.

The aforementioned dead patient was something I had been wondering about for a while, the three kinds of death you run into at the hospital as a cardiac sonographer are -
They did not call to cancel the echo order, the nurse is not there to tell you not to go into the patient's room, and the patient is lying in their bed but they are actually just straight up dead and not hooked up to anything and it takes you a minute or two to go, "hold on a fucking second... this person is DEAD" and then you float around the entrance of the room until the nurse shows up to be like "don't go in there!! patient expired!!" and you get to be like "m-hm YEAH I KNOW. Cancel the order." And you are disgruntled at the team for a. wasting your time and b. interrupting the final sleep of some poor person where you were very nearly lightly disrespectful to a corpse (by trying to shake them gently awake and putting stickers on them, as you do to asleep patients)
They called you because there is literally a Code Blue crisis situation happening and there's twenty people in the room, possibly doing CPR or giving meds or giving blood, like a well-oiled machine where you are a massive interloper with your giant ass ultrasound machine being in the way and asking "when do you want pictures? what do you want to see?", and you either get to scan before, during, or after lifesaving procedures, and if you (not the patient, not the family, for this will be a tragedy) are very, very lucky you may get pictures after the patient's heart has stopped moving but before they call the end of the code (and declare the patient officially dead) which means you are there, in the room, not-so-gently (because those pictures are hard to get after CPR) smashing on someone's chest with a piece of plastic as they die and you get to see the heart stop and the blood clot up almost immediately, and it's funny to see something that moves so much not doing much of anything at all.
This patient is already considered braindead and literally being kept alive with machines and they need pictures for organ donation ASAP I hope you know how to burn a CD
And by wondering about I mean, wanted to experience, because I'm a morbid fucker who works in a hospital and wonders about death in a hospital and how it works and what it's like, because that's a crisis situation not many people get to experience in their lives and good news! These are all things I have actually experienced as a cardiac imaging tech in the hospital. Writing it down is funny because I did not expect the trajectory of my life to go in that direction even at all.

I’ve been thinking a lot about philosophy lately. More specifically the question of “can You survive”.
there is a scenario game called Staying Alive. In it you are asked a few questions and your one goal is to survive. It is about keeping the intrinsic part of yourself alive. Psychological continuity: is it your mind, your memories, your personality that makes you You. Physical Continuity: does your physical being matter for your existence? How much of your body can be replaced and you still be you. The concept of a soul: is there something innate beyond the physical and psychological that connects who you are to who YOU are.
my father is having open heart surgery this Monday for a heart infection that has destroyed his mitral valve.
the cardiothoracic surgeon came to his hospital room and said that we had to be aware of the likely complications and had to be willing to face what was to come. Even with a successful surgery this ride wasn’t ending any time soon… not with his medical history. He said we had to be willing to “see it all through”; my dad would probably need a considerable amount of medical intervention even with a new mitral valve.
Based off the hits his kidneys have already taken he could need dialysis. An artificial kidney, a facsimile.
Can You Survive?
Will you see it through if he has to be on a ventilator for a month? With a Tracheostomy, throat surgically cut pumping oxygen for him. Unconscious, sedated, barely there.
Can You Survive?
The surgery has an increased likelihood of brain damage. This can affect memory, and personality not including physical capacity.
Can You Survive?
the surgeon said he’s will to do the operation but only if we were willing to go through keeping him Alive.
how far are we willing to go to keep him alive?
at what point do we draw the line?
palliative care came by to find our line.
when does it go from being keeping Him alive to just keeping him Alive.
I know what he wants and what is happening aren’t aligned.
faced with an irrevocable future. The possibility of changes to his body, his mind.
Can You Survive?

Understanding Heart Valve Surgery: Procedures, Risks, and Recovery with Expert Care
Heart Valve Surgery is a strategy to treat heart valve infection. Heart valve infection happens when somewhere around one of the four heart valves isn't working as expected. Heart valves keep blood streaming in the right course through the heart. Assuming you want Heart Valve Surgery, picking the best cardiac surgeon or top cardiac surgeon guarantees the greatest of care and better recuperation results.
Tumblr media
The four heart valves are the mitral valve, the tricuspid valve, the aspiratory valve, and the aortic valve. Every valve has folds — called flyers for the mitral and tricuspid valves and cusps for the aortic and aspiratory valves. These folds ought to open and close once during every heartbeat. Valves that don't open and close appropriately change blood and move through the heart to the body.
In Heart Valve Surgery, a specialist fixes or replaces the harmed or unhealthy heart valve or valves. Techniques to do this might incorporate open-heart Surgery or insignificantly invasive heart Surgery. Picking a middle with the top heart specialist who works in the two procedures guarantees ideal outcomes.
The sort of Heart Valve Surgery required relies upon age, by and large wellbeing, and the sort and seriousness of heart valve sickness.
Why it's done

CRITICAL EMERGENCY!!! 15 y/o girl needs heart surgery!!!!
Earlier this month, we made a post asking for your support in attaining 15 year-old Nour’s monthly treatment for her congenital heart condition. Unfortunately, the funds raised came too late. Nour’s health took a dramatic downturn yesterday, and the doctor said that because she had gone so long between monthly treatments, several of Nour’s heart valves have closed up. She now requires an urgent operation to save her heart.
NOUR WILL DIE WITHOUT THIS SURGERY!! She is dying right now because her heart is struggling to function! She needs this surgery IMMEDIATELY to save her young life!!
Tumblr media
The doctor said the surgery will cost $8000 USD. Nour’s family’s GFM is in Canadian dollars, or CAD, of which the conversion rate to USD is $1 USD=$1.41 CAD. This means we need $11,300 CAD in donations in order to pay the equivalent of $8000 USD for her surgery.
We NEED to raise the funds ASAP so Nour has a chance at survival!! We are breaking this sum up into 2 smaller goals to be more attainable. Our first goal to save Nour’s life is to raise $4000 USD/$5656 CAD.
**Progress: $43,187 CAD out of $49,000 CAD**
(or $30,554 USD out of $34,670 USD)
PLEASE HELP SAVE NOUR’S LIFE!!!
