I'm seeing a lot of folks online and IRL who are (understandably!) excited about Kamala's momentum after the debate (and T Swift's endorsement) last night. But I want to caution people against holding her up as some infallible, ideal candidate. Read the fact-checking transcripts from BBC and NPR. Understand what her position is on subjects that are important to you. Her platform is significantly more moderate than it used to be because she's trying to appeal to Republicans that are disillusioned with their candidate (it's working!).
But that means that if you care about things like the genocide which continues in Gaza, the expansion of fracking and other environmental concerns, decriminalizing border crossings, student loans, disability, and healthcare policies, you need to be attentive to the platform she's running on and the new promises she's making, not what she may have said or promised in the past
If she wins this, it will certainly be a win. Kamala is far and away the best candidate. But a Kamala win won't signal the end of the work we need to do. I don't want to dampen anyone's excitement, but holding any human being up as a faultless icon is a recipe for disappointment.

Public health officials in Toronto are recommending that people get vaccinated for meningococcal disease in light of an increase in cases. Toronto Public Health says there have been 13 cases of invasive meningococcal disease reported so far this year – more than the total cases seen in any year since 2002.
The agency says two of the 13 cases have been fatal. It says several countries, including the United States, are reporting a rise in cases of the potentially life-threatening bacterial infection this year. [...]

I am appalled at the news of mask bans.
Rejected Letter to the Editor, October 2024.
I submitted this to the Scranton Times-Tribune on October 5, 2024, and never heard back, so I’m posting it here.
I am appalled at the news of mask bans popping up in various places. I ought to have a right to protect myself from the elements: viruses, pollen, pollution, wildfire smoke, or cold, by wearing a mask. Health exceptions are not sufficient because having to carry papers or explain medical status is Un-American. Anonymity should not be forbidden and we should be allowed liberty of movement, a right described in our Constitution. There are already reports of disabled and elderly being targeted with harassment. It was in the news that a cancer patient in North Carolina, at a time a mask ban was merely proposed, was “confronted by a man who shouted expletives and called her a liberal for wearing the mask”, he feigned coughing and said he hopes the cancer kills her. It was also in the news that a mayor in Kentucky, a state with the highest rates of cancer, suggested mask bans would “curb gun violence” - instead of doing something about the guns, which seems entirely misguided. Mask bans are likely to lead to more violence. There have been letters to the editor in a New York newspaper suggesting vigilantism - one suggesting that others should harass people wearing masks by rudely taking photos, and fear mongering with the suggestion that masked elderly community members might actually be dangerous criminals “in costume”, which is ridiculous. Mask bans put targets on vulnerable innocent citizens who already have been marginalized by a society that’s politicized personal safety and is failing in the prevention of various disease spread. It’s a grotesque irony for people with cancer to get difficult and expensive treatments, only to be recklessly infected with a virus because masks are criminalized in some places. I hope nobody suggests such a nonsense law in northeastern Pennsylvania.

Coming across maggot-infested food as a bug lover: 😱🪱🥺🤢
(Being a janitor is great! Except for when it’s not. Listen it’s not the maggots’ fault they’re trying to help by getting rid of the rotting food. It’s the rotting food part I object to.
Thank you whatever apartment dweller does not know how to separate their trash and forced me to pick through a trash bag with maggots to pull out the recyclables bc the trash guys won’t take unsorted bags)

AN OPEN LETTER to THE PRESIDENT & U.S. CONGRESS; STATE GOVERNORS & LEGISLATURES
Say NO to Loony-Bins: Immediate Action Required for Inpatient Psychiatric Care
2 so far! Help us get to 5 signers!
The current model of inpatient psychiatric care, which primarily focuses on safety and crisis stabilization, falls short in promoting sustained recovery. The prevalent emphasis on ultrashort lengths of stay often overlooks the need for comprehensive treatment plans.
A proposed model of care advocates for rapid diagnosis, goal-setting, and treatment modalities before initiating treatment, organized into three distinct phases: assessment, implementation, and resolution. This approach emphasizes individualized treatment and active patient involvement in treatment planning, addressing critical psychosocial aspects that are frequently neglected.
As we strive to reform the mental health care system, it's imperative to prioritize effective, recovery-oriented treatment strategies. This includes ensuring patient comfort and preferences are accommodated within reason. Considering patient preferences, like comfort items (such as safe stuffed animals; Share-Bears, if you will) and rescue medications (like melatonin,) is essential to upholding rigorous standards of care and safety.
Let's advocate for reforms that enhance patient-centered practices while adhering to established treatment guidelines and advancing recovery-oriented care.
Say no to “loony-bins;” those archaic relics that should be relegated to the distant past.

Idc who this upsets, but I actually hated the whole forced mask wearing era with a burning passion. As someone with epilepsy which is aggravated by heat, it was absolute hell to have to wear that shit because (and fuck what y’all abled-bodies wanna say) it DOES impact my breathing and make me overheat. And I actually cannot just ‘go get a medical exemption’ because a) they don’t give that shit out like free candy, I had to go pay $500 to a neurologist to get that lil note, and b) I could staple that med cert to my fucking forehead and still get people losing their minds every time I went anywhere without a mask. Everyone like ‘oh disabled people are so terrified of COVID-19 so you should think of them before ragging on masks like this’ as though everyone ain’t already spent the last three decades of my life not giving a singular shit about my disability, but now suddenly want to act like they care about disabled people? Why tf should I care about giving anyone the spicy cough when no one has ever given a fuck how many seizures their actions cause me? Y’all want me to put my own health at risk by wearing this mask, so you don’t get a lil sore throat, when y’all will remain deliberately oblivious to epilepsy and other heat-related illnesses, right up until someone dies, and then you’ll still have a giggle about that too? Way more people be dying every day from heat-related illnesses than from COVID-19, so where’s my mandatory air-conditioning and icepack stations at every street corner? Fuck hand sanitizer stations, provide me a free cold drink. Additionally, mask wearing was the ONLY thing people got this fucking turnt about too. It’s not like any of y’all were social distancing (something which would have actually helped me with my disability lmao). No one was getting booted out of stores for standing on my damn heels every time I had to get in a queue. Anyway, after the first twenty times I got asked to leave a store for not wearing a mask (despite having that magical medical certificate) I made up my own mask by getting four of those ‘valves’, absolutely gutting the inside of them to allow unrestricted airflow, and then stitching them into a linen mask. Still uncomfortable, fo sure, but a lot better than having to deal with hot air on my face and under my sunglasses while already struggling not to pass out in the middle of the Australian summer.

Preparing a health and safety policy
A health and safety policy outlines your organization's overall approach to health and safety. It discusses how you will handle health and safety in your workplace as an employer. It should be crystal clear who does what, when, and how. Expand your understanding.

New job is exhausting but they know that so they let me leave early which meant I got time to visit my mum in hospital alone
And then I came home to my washing machine chirping a little error noise at me and because I am an adult I fucking dealt with it instead of crying like I wanted to and I'm just so tired

"In D.C. and in cities around the country, the ever-expanding racial wealth gap exacerbates the conditions that contribute to this uniquely U.S. crisis. Decades of housing discrimination, redlining, lack of access to quality education, high rates of joblessness and low-wage employment compound the challenges faced by Black communities. As the former vice president for programs at the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence put it, “inequality isn’t just about making money or not making money; it’s really about whether you’re going to survive.”

Health and Safety Policy
Tumblr media
A health and safety policy refers to a formal document or statement that outlines an organization's commitment to ensuring the well-being and safety of individuals within its premises. It serves as a guiding framework for managing health and safety matters within the organization and provides a clear direction for promoting a safe and healthy environment.
A comprehensive health and safety policy typically includes several key components.
Firstly, it expresses the organization's commitment to maintaining the health and safety of employees, customers, and other stakeholders. It emphasizes the importance of complying with relevant laws, regulations, and industry standards.
Secondly, the policy assigns responsibilities and outlines the roles of individuals within the organization. This ensures that everyone understands their obligations towards health and safety and promotes accountability at all levels. Management, supervisors, and employees each have their own set of responsibilities to fulfill in order to create a safe working environment.
health and safety policy is a crucial document that demonstrates an organization's commitment to protecting the well-being of individuals.
It sets the foundation for implementing effective health and safety measures, and the StartupHR Toolkit can be a valuable resource in creating an editable policy that meets the specific needs of an organization.

Using An Assessment Matrix With Your Business How To Use It
Tumblr media
An assessment matrix is a tool that can be used by a project manager to easily determine the level of risk associated with a project as a whole. With this matrix, you will be able to quickly identify which projects are in need of more attention, which ones are going well, and how much your overall risk exposure is for each project as a whole. The purpose of this article is to show you how to use a risk matrix in your business so that you are able to make better decisions about what projects to pursue next and what to avoid.
What is a risk assessment matrix, and what is its purpose?
An assessment matrix is a way of organizing risk in a way that is easy to understand. The idea is also to prioritize the issues as well as determine what needs to be done in order to resolve them. The purpose of a risk assessment matrix is to help identify the risks in your project, so that you can plan accordingly and mitigate them as much as possible.
Using a matrix of risk assessment, what can I do with it?
In order to be able to identify and prioritise the risks within your business, it is critical that you use a hazard risk assessment matrix. In addition, you can use it to assess them, take actions to mitigate them, and measure your progress over time as a result of them.
Identifying risks for new projects and determining whether they are acceptable
In assessing the risks that may arise for new projects, it's important that you take the following into consideration
The identification of the risks is the first step
It would be advisable to write down all of these potential problems if that is the case.
Determine how likely each risk is by assessing the likelihood. It is best to assign numbers to each risk based on a scale from 1-10, where 1 represents low probability and impact, and 10 represents high probability and impact. Note that there is no right or wrong answer when assigning numbers here.
An example of a matrix for risk assessment
The purpose of a risk assessment matrix is to identify and evaluate the risks associated with a project. If used as part of the overall risk management process, or alone as a stand-alone tool, it can provide a multitude of benefits. Using engineering risk assessment matrix will help you to identify, prioritize and control your risks based on their likelihood of occurrence, impact and controllability. By using the risk matrix, you will be able to determine where your time and energy should be spent. As a result, you can identify the areas in your business where you are exposed to the greatest risk as well as those areas that offer the best chance for success.

Why are clean hands still important for businesses?
Tumblr media
Promoting hand hygiene is crucial for both businesses and suppliers. For businesses, effective hand hygiene practices can significantly reduce the spread of infectious diseases, leading to fewer employee sick days and increased productivity. Research indicates that proper hand hygiene can lower the incidence of hygiene-preventable health care claims by over 20%. Additionally, businesses that prioritize employee health and safety through robust hand hygiene practices can enhance their reputation and employee satisfaction, which not only improves workplace morale but can also reduce employee healthcare costs associated with treating preventable illnesses.
For suppliers, ensuring a consistent supply of hand hygiene products is vital for public health. Ensuring available and affordable hygiene products is a pre-condition to practice good hand hygiene. During health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, disruptions in supply chains for hand hygiene products can lead to increased infection and mortality rates. By collaborating with governments, NGOs, and other health system actors, suppliers can help create resilient supply chains that withstand disruptions and meet the demand for essential products. Sustainable supply chains ensure that hand hygiene products are accessible and affordable to underserved communities, reducing health disparities and promoting overall public health. A reliable supply chain also supports the implementation of hand hygiene programs and interventions, essential for preventing the spread of infectious diseases.
To effectively implement hand hygiene practices, businesses should install and maintain handwashing stations in key areas – near toilets, in the kitchen, and in other shared office spaces – educate and motivate employees on properhandwashing techniques and ensure a steady supply of hygiene products. Integrating hand hygiene into workplace safety and health policies helps institutionalize these practices. Regular policy reviews ensure they remain aligned with best practices and current public health guidelines. Implementing a system to monitor hand hygiene compliance allows for ongoing assessment and improvement of hand hygiene practices.
By adopting these hand hygiene-focused strategies, businesses can protect employee and customer health, enhance their reputation, and support broader public health efforts, while suppliers can build sustainable supply chains for hand hygiene products. This unified approach enhances workplace well-being, supports public health, and strengthens overall resilience against disruptions.

GIERACH DRUG POLICY DECLARATION
“Recreational drug prohibition is an economic policy choice made to fight drug use & addiction, but ironically & counterintuitively, drug prohibition is the most effective means to incentivize drug production, invention & trafficking. The immutable economic rules regarding price, supply and demand cause the drug-prohibition-policy choice to increase drug availability, potency, variety, use, overdose & dependency. Recreational drug prohibition serves as the common denominator to a dozen crises, globally. That United Nations public policy choice, ratified by 186 nations, is the foundation of the World War on Drugs, doing more harm to public safety, health, sobriety, freedom, democracy and human rights than any preceding public policy in the history of mankind. Nothing short of drug legalization & regulation of all commonly used recreational drugs can set civilization’s train back on the tracks.”
