Thoughts on the VR game scene in ep 8 of the cherry magic radio drama

that is one long ass title

Hello dear friends, this will only really interest like 5 of you but I shall ramble about this surprisingly thought out scene nonetheless.

For the uninitiated: There's a (in my opinion) fantastic chinese radio drama adaptation of cherry magic, which you can find right here. The person translating this adds a new episode every wednesday and it's currently at 8 episodes (out of 13). If you enjoyed the manga, you will really enjoy this adaptiation, I promise.

On to my rambling now tho.

Disclaimer: I haven't watched the whole rd yet, so I might be mischaracterizing them a little bit (maybe). Also some of the things I'm saying might be a bit of a stretch but oh well 😌

So the scene I'm talking about is actually made up of two parts: the wait for the VR game and the actual game.

Pre-VR game, they're both standing in line and immediately we're met with a deviation from the manga: Kurosawa gets a number and suggests to play this rhythm game while they wait. Adachi doesn't end up playing but he does put the headphones for the game on Kurosawa, who points out how loud they are. I thought it's kinda weird that Adachi's the one putting them on him (cuz like, couldn't he just do that himself?) but if you see it in a more symbolic way it makes a lot of sense. Adachi's line "Now you can sing all you want" while Kurosawa's happily humming to himself, coupled with the fact he's blissfully unaware of the mean girls chattering about them in the background, makes me think this is symbolism for Adachi "shielding" him from the outside world and giving him a space to be himself, free of judgement and harsh words. The rest of the scene plays out pretty much the same as in the manga, with Adachi getting into his head and subsequently slapping Kurosawa's hand away.

So then they both get ready to play the VR game, which is actually just one big metaphor for their relationship. They both get told they'll first have to "adjust to the VR vision" -> adjust to their new relationship Kurosawa: "We'll fight side by side" "Don't shoot me before the round starts" -> "We're finally together!" "Don't write me off before I've even had a chance to prove myself a worthy boyfriend" The game starts and they both can't see each other, tapping around in the dark. -> This relationship is new to both of them, for Adachi because he's never been in one, and for Kurosawa because it's the first genuine loving relationship he's ever been in. Adachi gets really in his head about how the date is going, same as in the manga. While he does that, Kurosawa is repeatedly calling out for him in the real world. -> They're both trying to make this work and stumbling, Kurosawa not getting through to Adachi with his spoken words, yet so desperate to reach him. Kurosawa: "Adachi, say something back" -> Kurosawa craves acknowledgement, pre- and post-getting together. Then finally Kurosawa touches him and that's when Adachi finally responds, Kurosawa going "Found you" in his thoughts. -> Adachi is touched, literally and metaphorically, by Kurosawa and his thoughts, his positive influence pulling him (here only briefly) away from his negative thoughts. The staff instructs them to stand apart, while Kurosawa's surprised at this. ("Aren't we on the same team?") -> I think the staff is supposed to represent the judging eyes of society in this metaphor, telling them they're meant to be apart, as they don't fit together (just like the gossiping girls at the beginning said). (This might be a stretch but it also gives heteronormativity vibes, as in, you're supposed to be apart, you're both "on the same team" (same gender)) Staff: "But if you two get too close during the fight, you might accidentally hurt each other." -> If we drop the staff=society metaphor here, this sentence really just represents their entire early relationship dynamic of trying to do what they think is best for the other, but ending up hurting each other instead, without meaning to. The closer they get, the more friction their differences create. Kurosawa being the one who acts first: "Is this much distance alright?" -> Of course he would be the first to try to accomodate these new restrictions, always trying to take up as less space as possible to not be a source of trouble for Adachi. Eventually the actual game starts up and they play, Kurosawa telling Adachi that he'll "cover for him", but ultimately failing at this ("I said I'd cover for you but I only ended up slowing us down") -> Kurosawa trying to do more than he's capable of and messing things up for both of them is kind of a running theme with him. (shameless plug to my essay about this here lol) Adachi performs poorly in the game because he couldn't focus. Kurosawa immediately asks if they want to go again, but he doesn't feel like he can do it, ending the scene there. -> Adachi worrying too much about how others see him/them is not only how he loses the game but also how he "fails" the date, losing all hope that him and Kurosawa are meant to be together at all, even though Kurosawa is very willing to try and make it work.

The rest of the episode plays out very differently from the manga, so I can only really analyze that when I finally get to watch the next episode. 👍

First of all, i just wanted to drop my height HCs bc,,,, why not lmao

I can't exactly visualize heights very well in my mind so these may be a wee bit too tall, idk, but yeah! I think giving Hyde an extra half inch would be funny bc you KNOW that mf would just round up lmao. Elias is a bit taller than Hyde, which Hyde kinda hates sometimes, itty bitty fella.

Anyways!! Harry is first up for rambling bc I have less for him rn lmao. I don't remember if ive mentioned it much before on here, but I know I included it in the fic i did for him, and that's his Scottish accent :3 we as a fandom don't write Jekyll's accent enough so I like projecting it onto injured Hyde and now Harry 😌 MORE SCOTTISH JEKYLL PLEASE-

Harry didn't really have to worry about keeping face in the mindscape (except for when around Mind Lanyon, who would pester tf out of him over it) so he fell back to at LEAST having an accent. He partially fell back on it because 1, it made him feel a wee more comfortable, and 2, because of how often he revisited memories from university (specifically during his and Lanyon relationship ofc), so he's used to hearing himself speaking with at least a drawl.

But yeah, that accent kinda sticks with him when he gains control and he has quite a hard time shaking it, which makes for some fun interactions, like when Lanyon's trying to break down his office door :3333

I believe I've mentioned this, but Harry is very very sensitive to most physical sensations (touch, pain, etc.) and has some light and sound sensitivities for a decent bit after gaining control. Because of how long he spent in the mindscape with numbed senses, It really messed with him to suddenly have control again. Eventually he starts getting used to it again, but for the first few days he's practically on the edge of a mental breakdown at every moment. He's also super jumpy from it (and from the ungodly paranoia he got from the mindscape lmao) and is quite firmly "no touch" for about a week (except for when he initiates stuff with Lanyon). Once he gets used to it tho his touch starved ass is a lot more affectionate and such.

One last thing for him! He's also far more sensitive to hunger and thirst sensations/pain, so he tends to take far better care of their body while in control. It took him a short while to get used to eating and drinking again, but he's more than happy to do it, not realizing how much he had missed it. Plus, he's seen how horrible Jekyll and Hyde would take care of themselves, so he certainly doesn't want their neglect to be his downfall. He's also a bit more sensitive to being tired, but can't sleep very well (especially without Lanyon) because of paranoia and nightmares.

Elias usually throws some sort of fit when he's initially order to switch back (except for the very rare instances where he's actively wanting to switch back, like when everyone's busy and he starts getting lonely anyways), though most the time he'll simmer down when Henry starts sorta begging or when either Henry or Lanyon (or very occasionally Hyde) lowkey bribe him. Usually Henry (or Hyde) will bribe him with physical touch/affection (hugs, cuddling, kisses, stuff like that), or bonding time, like going out and doing things together and such (or just doing stuff together at the society, like watching Henry do science or doing paperwork 💀). (Also, sometimes Jekyll will just get somewhat impatient and start asking more desperately and the guilt kinda gets to Elias, Henry usually feels bad about it tho) otherwise, Lanyon will bribe him (quite grudgingly, might I add) with more time out, going to the park with Elias in shadow form and talking, or letting him get a gift for Jekyll or Hyde. But yeah, Elias is lowkey like a little affectionate, overactive puppy :3

AND JFKGKKF YEAH JEKYLL WOULD 😭😭 both out of selfishness and not, since he still hasn't tested how the formula behaves when an alter ego is out for prolonged amounts of time, and sometimes he just wants Robert back.

Jekyll likes Elias, he just has more of a preference for Lanyon. Jekylls probably also got a bit less patience for Elias's whining after dealing with Hyde's for so long lmao, he always feels kinda bad about being mean or anything to Elias tho, since it's kinda his fault that Lanyon split.

Would Lanyon ever like bother Elias with the fact that Jekyll likes him better?? Like maybe, at one point he just gets too tired of him wanting to hang out with Jekyll and says to him that Jekyll just deals with him out of pity, and like Elias then just feeling kinda bad about it and wondering if Jekyll actually likes him??

If Lanyon's feeling especially spiteful and annoyed, probably, but also Elias worries about that enough on his own and bothers Lanyon with all his self deprecating thoughts anyways 💀

How does Hyde feel about Elias?

He's generally guilt free about the whole "splitting Lanyon" thing and /gen likes Elias way more than he likes Lanyon lmao. He still gets that sorta bitter anger and resentment when he looks at Lanyon, but he doesn't get that with Elias. Hyde kinda thinks that Elias is all the best parts of Lanyon (Except for Elias's emotional sensitivity sometimes, but Hyde deals. He feels surprisingly bad when he upsets Elias..) But yeah, Elias is most of the reason why Hyde is complacent enough to actually kinda lay low after messing up Blackfog and stuff, so Jekyll certainly likes Elias for keeping Hyde somewhat in check lmao

👔Gus Fring Headcanons! 🐓

Gus is autistic! He is very high masking anytime he's around someone else, and he only feels comfortable unmasking when he's alone at home, where he can stim and self-regulate in private. Being high masking to that degree is exhausting, so he really enjoys/needs his alone time after business hours.

I don't know if he realizes or acknowledges that he is autistic; he probably never put too much thought into it. He's been too focused on just maintaining his business and surviving in the midst of the cartel.

Gus has intense germophobia, as well as a contamination phobia and hemophobia (fear of blood, specifically of blood getting on him). Before Max died, he didn't struggle with these issues, but the trauma of seeing the love of his life die horribly and unexpectedly in front of him developed into these phobias.

He repeatedly washes his hands throughout the day whenever they feel unclean, and showers every day. It's one of the ways he can stay in control in an otherwise out of control situation. It's how he can cope, because he never truly healed from Max's death.

Speaking of Max, they were more than just business partners! They were life partners in a romantic relationship. Max was one of the only people who Gus could be himself around and let down his guard.

Max was a big motivation and driving force for creating Los Pollos Hermanos, because Gus wanted to share his love for food to more than just his boyfriend. He wanted to share it with the world, with Max by his side. (This hurt my heart aah 😭)

I headcanon Gus as gay too! And he keeps his sexuality close to his chest. Very close. He's extremely cautious in ensuring that nobody– especially the Salamancas– knows that he's gay, unless he wants to be involved romantically with them.

I'd bet that the only people who knew were Max, Gale (they dated for a little bit before Gus called it off), Nacho (gaydar mostly. Nacho clocked him during that "find a way" scene in the car. You know the one), and mayyybe Mike. I feel like Hector was suspicious and kinda put the pieces together, and he was keeping it in the back of his mind as potential leverage/blackmail against Gus.

One of Gus' favorite ways to express his love and care for someone is to cook them a meal!

He loves everything about the process of cooking; the planning, the prep, cooking and assembling the dish, and finally (and most importantly), watching the person he made it for eat and enjoy it. It's mediative for him, and helps him calm down and focus when he needs a distraction.

After Max died, he lost a little bit of his passion for cooking, and cooking for anyone else never felt the same as it did for Max.

Gus' other hobbies at home would be anything that involved meticulous, detailed, and careful tasks/steps. I think he'd be into making model train sets or diorama scenes, or something akin to it. He's a perfectionist, through and through, and he feels very fulfilled seeing the finished product after he hyperfixates on a project.

Now onto the spicy headcanons! 🫡 I kept it gender neutral in pronouns, simply for the sake of differentiating between Gus and his partner. Less confusing to read that way, but all of his partners will be men. Some of these aren't inherently explicit, but they fit better under this category since they're about his love life/relationships. Also, a little bit of implied Gus x reader if you squint teehee

Gus insists on being the top & the dominant during sex. This, again, goes back to his need for control of a situation and holding power over his lover. He will not bottom under any circumstance.

Max was the one person he was comfortable bottoming for, or letting Max be the dom. They would switch roles often enough so that they were equally both top and bottom. Anyone else is simply too unpredictable, in his eyes.

I would consider him mostly a soft dom, although he can get pretty nasty at times. He definitely has a degradation kink– degrading others, not receiving the degradation. And brat taming.

Speaking of kinks, I think Gus would be into bondage and rope play. He very much enjoys tying his partner up and teasing them relentlessly until they're begging and whining Gus to let them cum.

Gus is great at tending to his partner's needs; he listens and pays attention to what his partner is into and what turns them on the most.

Especially if they're trying to tease him in public or at the restaurant. He gets a little frustrated and annoyed that they're not "behaving professionally in a work setting", but that won't stop him from locking his office door and bending them over his desk for a fitting punishment.

"Fine. If you are unable to control yourself and behave properly while you are in my restaurant, then I have no choice but to control you myself. Do not let anyone hear you, understand?" He would growl in their ear as he starts to undo his belt.

He also gives amazing aftercare, but once the morning comes, he quietly puts his clothes back on and slips out the door. If he even stays the night at all.

Gus has a hard time allowing anyone to get close to him like Max did, so he only keeps things casual with his intimate partners. They're hookups and that's about it. He doesn't wanna catch feelings for anyone else, for his safety and theirs. He cut off his relationship with Gale because of his developing feelings.

If he ever did allow a relationship to go into the more serious territory, he would give his partner the same care, dedication, and loyalty that he shows in his work.

He would be the kind of boyfriend that makes sure his partner never wants for anything, as long as that same loyalty and dedication was reciprocated. He expects nothing less.

Gus takes a very long time to establish trust with someone, but once they have that trust, it's for life. He would protect them with every ounce of his strength and resource he has available to him.

i'd imagine that he spent most of his adolescence/young adulthood trying to prove he could be strong in spite of his orientation. and in the salamanca family, strong means ruthless, brutal. there was probably some incident where he proved himself to be just as vicious as anyone else, and that earned him his uncle's respect. he still wasn't thrilled that his nephew was gay, but he didn't resent him for it anymore. he accepted that was just how he was.

as lalo grew up, he grew more comfortable being soft in certain aspects. he would still never cry, but he let himself enjoy moments of vulnerability.

I still haven't decided exactly how the ship is gonna work, but I'll try my best to organize my thoughts and explain my ideas so far for you~ I'll even add Akshaya's banner. I need to make one for the ship hahah

Akshaya definitely mets Epel through either Jack or Yuu. They're the two people she sitcks to at first and she's really bad at making friends, so she just tags along with them. One of the times when the 1st year group is together is when she and Epel are introduced, most likely.

They're just acquitances from then on, but at some point Epel helps Akshaya out with something (still undecided, but in the vibe of "catching her before he falls" or "blocking a ball that was gonna hit her"). Either way, Akshaya thinks that was a cool move and tells him "Thank you, you're so cool!" or similar. "Cool" is definitely on the "manly" side of praise (you know, from Epel's basic boy gender norms perspective XDD), so Epel gets all happy about it and boasts a bit.

Akshaya takes more notice of him from then on. She mostly enjoys when he's being "himself" and not meek for Vil. And she genuinely thinks he's cool and manly and all that. Basically, she admires what she lacks (she's so shy and meek). So she tells him. And since Epel likes those kinds of comments and attention, he'd keep showing off for her at the same time.

Little by little they'll get closer and somehow(?) they end up being a couple. I haven't thought that far ahead hahahah

And now, some little things I also have in mind for them or that make me like this ship, in no particular order:

They're a really confusing couple gender-wise. For others, mostly, they each have their own gender clear. But with Epel looking so "cute/femenine" by traditional standards, and Akshaya being more in the non-binary appearance wise, dressing in a really neutral way, it's easy to mistake who is what. And you know what? Too bad, you shouldn't judge people's gender by their appearance anyway~ But yea, I find this kind of thing fun to play with~ Also, Akshaya is 1cm taller than Epel (he'd hate that forever, maybe he'll grow taller than her in a couple of years XD). It's a small difference, so they basically look the same height 😌 It's just cute!

Kula is a bit more sceptical about Epel at first. In the end, he's the most cautelous of the two and his priority is always to keep Akshaya safe. He also doesn't think Epel is as cool as Akshaya does, but mostly just rolls his eyes at her about that hahaha. He warms up to him after, and mostly does not care as long as he makes Akshaya happy. When Akshaya and Epel are having a moment or they spend time together after they become a couple, Kula will either hide himself away inside Akshaya's clothes and sleep, or go to a hidden close-by location and sleep there until they're done. At that point, he trusts Epel, so he has no worries leaving them "alone".

I like to imagine Akshaya tagging along in the Harveston event too. I did a drawing of it for Twistober this year~ But a bit more about it. Akshaya is terrible with the cold, so even if she prepared in advance and put a lot of clothes on the day they go there, she's still cold af. They give her one of the warmest outfits later when they change, and Epel keeps checking on her to make sure she's never too cold. He even will give her his poncho sometimes to help her keep warm 🤭 And well, she'd love the part about making their own little animal plushies to help with the race! She loves cross-stitching the most, but also likes sewing in general. She'll be really happy learning about the tradition and how they're used. She'd make a snake plushie for herself, of course! She'd also be interested on how the traditional outfits they wear are made and probably chat with Epel's grandma about them for a while~ She'd be extremelly awkward around her at first, tho. Akshaya is super shy after all, and she wants to make a good impression on her. But seeing how she's really sweet (usually), and she's similar to her grandson, she'd quickly warm up to her ❤

Also, regarding the song I shared yesterday, I think some of the character developement for Akshaya will come from being close to Epel. With the other 1st years as well, but since she'll end up being closest with Epel, he'd have the most influence. Just how he openly welcomes her, always includes her and is really nice to her. He'll also be patient when she's all shy or can't quite make up her mind about something because of her fears of rejection. And slowly, she'll be a bit more open and be less social awkward~ (she's still that way, though, that won't go away completely hahah but getting better slowly 😌)

On another note, because of how you worded your ask… I realized I could even add some symbolism about the apple and the snake hahaha I never thought about it but it could be fun XD If only I knew more about religion(?). Maybe I'll ask a friend of mine who know a bunch about it if she has some ideas for this C:

And I think that's all I have for them so far~ One day I wanna answer those "ship questions" I have with them~ that would be fun :D

hmmm,, okay so i actually think they would have started putting things together during farmhouse arc, like “oh are our distant brother is actually spending time with us!!” only to dismiss it with “yeah but it’s probably bc he’s injured and can’t train :(“. they (donnie and raph) feel like that’s confirmed when leo becomes distant as soon as they return to new york. so things kinda go back to normal and leo is absent again.

after splinter’s actual death tho- leo would once again gradually let himself be around his brother’s. i think at some point she would realize how terribly splinter treated all of them, but especially her. surprisingly i don’t thing he would be the one to bring it up- i think donnie would be like “hey guys, pretty sure splinter neglected us a little bit” that’s when leo would say something, after a little urging.

after typing all that out i realize that wasn’t exactly the question- but for how his brothers would respond? they’d be upset above all else. i think raph would blame himself, both for not noticing and getting angry at leo for something she couldn’t control. i think donnie would have already put the pieces together, not shocked, but definitely saddened, a little upset he didn’t realize sooner. mikey would be absolutely heartbroken, devastated that splinter was worse than any of them realized (he can’t bring themself to hate splinter despite everything), but relieved that leo didn’t ignore them out of hatred or something like that

i'll be so real i think he was like. not really on my radar at all due to his Zegras Proximity (i'm not a hater or a lover but a secret third thing re: tz but i used to be a STRICT hater) and then i heard the fucking. interview about the rooftop and saw the PLAYLIST and then i actually saw jamie himself and i was like oh my god. wait. he's adorable i think?

that's my grandson. like. he is a grown professional athlete but i need to knit him a sweater and mittens with the mittens attached by a string so he stays warm and doesn't lose them. i need to make him cookies. i loveeee his anxious little mannerisms and quiet little voice so much but i also love how when you get him started on a topic he enjoys he Will go on. very refreshing contrast to your tz/jh and even like, seguin types where he feels much less bro-y and cocky and bombastic he's just a sweet guy who is like genuinely enthusiastic about what he does but on a mouse sized scale and seems content to just kind of be a backbone for the team without having to take center stage... i like him :) my polite little guy! i do think we should let him be a little meaner tho. if my boyfriend had in the past fucked jack hughes i would be killing jack hughes with hammers and jamie is too polite for that but we should let him go apeshit
