Announcing Tobin means you’re getting the media circus. I’d be putting that off for as long as possible too. If this were a team who needed the hype, than sure. But this team is selling out tickets even without a big name like Tobin. I also think it’s way too coincidental that they happen to have one spot left on the roster to sign a player. I’ve seen some people say that there’s technically 3 spots left since Gilles and Swaby are on loan and don’t count against the roster but idk about that.
Personally i count 23 spot taken if i don't count Gilles and Swaby. This is the 32 player roster and if i take off everyone who is loaned out or not contracted i get to this.
Goalkeepers (3): Angelina Anderson, DiDi Haračić, Brittany Isenhour
Defenders (8): Vanessa Gilles (LOAN, INT), Sarah Gorden, Madison Hammond, Kelsey Hill (NRI), Merritt Mathias, Paige Nielsen, Megan Reid, Ali Riley, Jasmyne Spencer, Allyson Swaby (LOAN), Gisele Thompson (U-18 trialist), M.A. Vignola
Midfielders (7): Claire Emslie, Jun Endo (INT), Shae Harvey (U-18 trialist), Clarisse Le Bihan (INT), Savannah McCaskill, Lily Nabet, Mackenzie Pluck, Katie Soderstrom (NRI), Dani Weatherholt
Forwards (5): Simone Charley, Katie Johnson, Sydney Leroux, Mia Minestrella (U-18 trialist), Christen Press (SEI), Alyssa Thompson
#ask#acfc#some people don't count Chris because of the sei list#but she will be taken off it if she will play this season so you will have to count her as well

“The future belonged to the showy and the promiscuous”: Why the 21st Century Loves Edith Wharton
Emily J. Orlando
E. Gerald Corrigan Chair in the Humanities & Social Sciences and Professor of English
Fairfield University
Photo: John Singer Sargent, Sybil Frances Grey, later Lady Eden 1905.
If ever there were a good time to read the American writer Edith Wharton (1862-1937), who published over forty books across four decades, it’s now. Since the Wharton revival of the late 20th century, when directors were adapting (the Pulitzer-Prize winning) The Age of Innocence, Ethan Frome, The Buccaneers, and The House of Mirth, her star has continued to rise. As I yesterday prepared to teach The Custom of the Country, which many have called Wharton’s greatest novel, a friend texted me Sofia Coppola’s article on the surprising appeal of its social-climbing heroine. Coppola is developing Undine Spragg’s story for Apple TV. A kind of Gilded Age Material Girl, Undine has been ready for her close-up for years.
Coppola joins an impressive roster of contemporary admirers of Wharton that includes Roxane Gay, Laura Bush, Lisa Lucas, Peggy Noonan, Jennifer Egan, Stephin Merritt, Claire Messud, Meg Wolitzer, Mindy Kaling, Doug Hughes, Brandon Taylor, Ta-Nehisi Coates, Ali Benjamin, Vendela Vida, Ottessa Moshfegh, and Kristin Hannah. At a time when publishing houses are compelled to scale back, new editions of Wharton’s books are appearing in print with introductions by Coppola, Egan, and Taylor.
Photo: Sofia Coppola.
Those who think they don’t know Wharton might be surprised to learn they do. A reverence for Wharton’s writings informs Sex and the City (whose pilot welcomes us to “the Age of Un-Innocence”), Gossip Girl, Downtown Abbey (whose “Lady Edith” suggests a nod to Wharton), and HBO’s The Gilded Age which, like Downton, is created by the Wharton-appreciating Julian Fellowes. His Bertha and George, after all, are named for the power couple from The House of Mirth.
But why Wharton? Why now? Perhaps it’s because for all its new technologies, conveniences, and modes of travel and communication, our own “Gilded Age” is a lot like hers. For the post-war and post-flu-epidemic climate that engendered The Age of Innocence is not far removed from our post-COVID-19 reality. In both historical moments, citizens of the world have witnessed a retreat into conservativism and a rise of white supremacy. Fringe groups like the “Proud Boys” and “QAnon” and deniers of everything from the coronavirus to climate change and Sandy Hook are invited to the table in the name of free speech, and here Wharton’s distrust of false narratives resonates particularly well. Post-9/11 calls for patriotism and the alignment of the American flag with one political party harken back to Wharton’s poignant questioning, in a 1919 letter, of the compulsion to profess national allegiance:
how much longer are we going to think it necessary to be “American” before (or in contradistinction to) being cultivated, being enlightened, being humane, & having the same intellectual discipline as other civilized countries?[i]
Her cosmopolitan critique of nationalist fervor remains instructive to us today.
Edith Wharton seems to have foreseen the excesses, obsessions, and spectacles of our current moment. The scandals documented in Wharton’s narratives serve as harbingers of the sensations that flash across our hand-held screens. Jeffrey Epstein’s sex trafficking touches on the same nerve as the sexual exploitation of minors in Wharton’s Summer (1917) and The Children (1928). The quid pro quo run-in between Wharton’s Lily Bart and Gus Trenor looks uncomfortably forward to Harvey Weinstein and #MeToo. The rise to power of Donald Trump would not surprise Edith Wharton.
Photo: “Vanity,” by Auguste Toulmouche, circa 1870.
Wharton’s tenacious Undine Spragg—as horrifying to progressive era readers as she is admired by Generation Z—can be conceived of as the original social media influencer conscious of her brand. For Undine and her creator know that “the future belonged to the showy and the promiscuous”[ii] and that the turn-of-the-century “world where conspicuousness passed for distinction”[iii] foreshadows our own. Wharton would describe Undine in terms we might use for a “Real Housewife of Park Avenue”: “If only everyone would do as she wished she would never be unreasonable” (162). Undine’s world encourages her to aspire to the rank of trophy wife and the sexual double standard dictating that “genius is of small use to a woman who does not know how to do her hair”[iv] would apply to Wharton herself who, on the 150th anniversary of her birth, would be assessed by a male novelist in terms of how she sizes up to Grace Kelly or Jackie Kennedy.[v] The writer who would declare, in her wildly popular interior design manual The Decoration of Houses, privacy “one of the first requisites of civilized life”[vi] would be appalled by what is broadcast across social media. Wharton also would’ve anticipated the racism directed at Meghan Markle and why granting Oprah an interview would not help relations with her spouse’s family. Children forcibly separated from families due to morally dubious immigration policies echo the plight of war refugees for whose welfare Edith Wharton labored, while the distrust of the cultural other echoes the writer’s own complicated nationalist allegiances.[vii]
Ten years ago, Lev Raphael took the temperature of Wharton studies declaring in the Huffington Post: “Edith Wharton is hot.” She is now positively on fire. I offer below a short excerpt from the introduction to The Bloomsbury Handbook to Edith Wharton, which appears in print today.
*********************
The image gracing the cover of The Bloomsbury Handbook to Edith Wharton, capturing a scene on the terrace of Edith Wharton’s French home, reflects the cultural work that this book takes as its task. The writer is in her element: she cradles in her lap her beloved dogs, she sits outdoors at a well-appointed property she lovingly transformed, she surrounds herself with fashionably dressed cosmopolitans, and she smiles. The moment validates an idea expressed in The Age of Innocence: that “the air of ideas is the only air worth breathing.” As host, Wharton, by this point an internationally acclaimed artist, has brought together representatives of an admiring generation from diverse backgrounds that would outlive and perhaps learn from her. That sunlit terrace is doing something we hope this book will do: provide a foundation for future conversations with Edith Wharton at the center.
Photo: Edith Wharton publicity shot.
Around the time this photograph was taken, Wharton would reflect in A Backward Glance that “[t]he world is a welter and has always been one; but though all the cranks and the theorists cannot master the old floundering monster, . . . here and there a saint or a genius suddenly sends a little ray through the fog, and helps humanity to stumble on, and perhaps up” (379). Wharton’s writings arguably send a ray and help humanity stumble on and up in our own Gilded Age. It is the aim of this collection of essays, produced by leaders in the field at a time of global crisis, to make a meaningful contribution to the scholarship on and dialogue about the work of Edith Wharton and to open up new possibilities for understanding and embracing a writer whose corpus is as enormous as it is resonant. To borrow from Wharton’s preface to her anthology The Book of the Homeless (1916), in which she conceives of her volume, as she so often does, as a house: “You will see from the names of the builders what a gallant piece of architecture it is. . . . So I efface myself from the threshold and ask you to walk in.”[viii]
Emily J. Orlando is the E. Gerald Corrigan Chair in the Humanities & Social Sciences and Professor of English at Fairfield University. She is the author of Edith Wharton and the Visual Arts and editor of The Bloomsbury Handbook to Edith Wharton. She is currently preparing for publication a new edition of Edith Wharton’s first book, The Decoration of Houses.

EASY TO WED
July 11, 1946
Directed by Edward N. Buzzell
Produced by Jack Cummings for Metro-Goldwyn Mayer
Written by Dorothy Kingsley, based on the screenplay Libeled Lady by George Oppenheimer, Maurine Dallas Watkins (as Maurice Watkins), and Howard Emmett Rogers. Uncredited contributions by Buster Keaton.
Synopsis ~ When a newspaper runs a scandalous story about debutante Connie Allenbury, her powerful broker father threatens the newspaper's editor, Warren Haggerty, with a massive lawsuit. Faced with a libel suit from the socialite Allenbury, Haggerty cooks up a plan to beat her at her own game. To do this, he must rely upon the romantic chicanery of ex-employee Bill Stevens Chandler, with Haggerty's fiancée Gladys Benton (Lucille Ball) caught in the middle. Warren believes that, if he can prove Connie truly is a home-wrecker, as the article claims, he can file a countersuit against her. Warren then enlists his own fiancée, Gladys and reporter Bill Chandler to take part in a complex plan to turn the tables on the Allenburys.
PRINCIPAL CAST
Lucille Ball (Gladys Benton) is appearing in her 63rd film since coming to Hollywood in 1933. Lucy plays the role originated by her friend Jean Harlowe in the 1936 version Libeled Lady.
Van Johnson (Bill Stevens Chandler) co-starred in Too Many Girls (1940), the film that introduced Lucille Ball to Desi Arnaz. He was also seen with Lucy in the film Yours, Mine and Ours (1968). He played himself on one of the most popular episodes of “I Love Lucy,” “The Dancing Star” (ILL S4;E27) and 1968′s “Guess Who Owes Lucy $23.50?” (HL S1;E11). He died in 2008 at age 92.
Esther Williams (Connie Allenbury) also appeared with Lucille Ball in Ziegfeld Follies (1945).
Keenan Wynn (Warren Haggerty) also appeared with Lucy and Williams in Ziegfeld Follies (1945) and with Ball in Without Love (1945) and The Long, Long Trailer (1953).
Ben Blue (Spike Dolan) previously appeared with Lucille Ball in Thousands Cheer (1943). Like Lucy, he had a cameo role in the 1967 film A Guide for the Married Man. They also acted together in “Jack Benny’s Carnival Nights” on March 20, 1968.
Cecil Kellaway (J.B. Allenbury) had previously appeared with Ball in Annabel Takes A Tour (1938).
Ethel Smith (Herself) was an organist playing herself.
Carlos Ramirez (Himself) was a Columbian-born singer appearing as himself.
June Lockhart (Babs Norvell) became one of TV’s most famous moms on “Lassie” and “Lost in Space”.
Paul Harvey (Farwood) did six other films with Lucille Ball: The Affairs of Cellini (1934), Kid Millions (1934), Broadway Bill (1934), The Whole Town’s Talking (1935), I’ll Love You Always (1935), and The Marines Fly High (1940). Fans probably remember him best as the art critic who visits the Ricardo apartment to assess Lucy’s talent in “Lucy the Sculptress” (ILL S2;E15).
James Flavin (Joe) previously appeared with Lucille in The Affairs of Cellini (1934), Without Love (1945), as the Pizzeria Owner in “The Visitor from Italy” (ILL S6;E5), and in 1963 Critic’s Choice and two episodes of “The Lucy Show.”
Celia Travers (Farwood's Secretary) had also appeared with Lucille Ball in Meet the People (1944).
Grant Mitchell (Homer Henshaw) makes his only screen appearance with Lucille Ball.
Sybil Merritt (Receptionist) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball.
Sondra Rodgers (Attendant) makes her only appearance with Lucille Ball.

‘EASY’ TRIVIA
A remake of one of the great comedies of the 1930s, Libeled Lady, with Jean Harlow, William Powell, Myrna Loy, and Spencer Tracy.
Van Johnson worked with Lucille Ball again several more times. He guest-starred as himself on "I Love Lucy" and he co-starred with her in the 1968 film Yours, Mine and Ours.
Van Johnson's biography, MGM's Golden Boy, states that Lucille Ball's performance as Gladys "reveals the embryo of her Lucy Ricardo role in the later ‘I Love Lucy’ television series."
Chandler's overdue hotel bill of $763.40 would equate to nearly $10,380 in 2021. The film was a big hit at the box office, earning MGM a profit of $1,779,000 according to studio records.
The duck hunting sequence with Johnson was written and directed by Buster Keaton and Edward Sedgwick, both of who proved close personal friends with Lucille Ball.
Radio’s “Screen Guild Theater” broadcast a 30-minute adaptation of the movie in February 1948 with Van Johnson and Esther Williams reprising their film roles. Two years later, "Lux Radio Theater" broadcast a 60-minute radio adaptation of the movie with Van Johnson reprising his film role.
Lucille Ball borrows one of Samuel Goldwyn's malapropisms when she says, "Include me out!" Keenan Wynn tries to convince her of having a sham wedding with Van Johnson.
This film was first telecast in Los Angeles on September 26, 1957; in Philadelphia on October 25, 1957' in New York City January 23, 1958; and in San Francisco on Saturday January 25, 1958. At this time, color broadcasting was in its infancy, limited to only a small number of high rated programs, primarily on NBC and NBC affiliated stations, so these film showings were all still in B&W. Viewers were not offered the opportunity to see these films in their original Technicolor until several years later.
Early in this film, on the lower left of the screen, Fidel Castro (without the beard) is seen as a poolside spectator with a drink in front of him. Young Fidel did extra work for MGM, while a student at UCLA, before becoming fully active in politics. It’s interesting that Castro and Lucille should be in the same film, seeing that her husband was born in Cuba and driven out by revolutionaries.

CONCERT REVIEW: PONYTAILS W/ PEACH PYRAMID AND KIN KANYON AT THE FOX CABARET - APRIL 12TH, 2019
Three local bands, three equally entrancing performances. On April 12th, Vancouver bands Ponytails and Kin Kanyon teamed up with Victoria’s Peach Pyramid for a night of chill vibes, good music and the occasional drink or two (if so desired). The event was held at the Fox Cabaret, which is a small, intimate venue – making listening to these bands all that much more special.
Vancouver band, Kin Kanyon (pictured above), opened the show full of energy and charisma. Their psychedelic guitar vibe did a really good job setting the tone for the night, along with a soulful drum beat. They played some tracks off their new EP Trace of Love; the two that stood out to me the most were “Fauxtown” and “Every Time I Dream” – both of which made this introverted girl want to get up and dance. “Fauxtown” is a much more upbeat song with retro/funk elements, while “Every Time I Dream” has a chill feel and primarily features that psychedelic guitar sound.
Peach Pyramid took the stage next with soft and harmonious female vocals. With Jen Severtson on lead vocals, three backup singers, keyboard, bass, guitar and drums, there was a lot going on on such a small stage—but it was also a whole lot of awesome. They performed songs from their album Repeating Myself. There was so much emotion in their songs, and a whimsical vulnerability to each one. As soon as they played their first song, I found myself turning to my friend and simply saying, “Wow.” There was a really nice balance of upbeat songs versus the more mellow tracks that they performed. One of my favourites was “Trying,” where the vocal harmonies came together in a euphonic way, and the instrumentals layered beautifully.
Headlining was Ponytails, who gave an absolutely captivating performance. Beyond the songs themselves, the stage presence was phenomenal. Armed with great hair (and beard) and a tambourine in hand, frontman Harvey Merrit stole the show. There was a lot of hip action, arm movement, and of course fantastic vocals. The instrumentals were equally as enchanting, decorated with psychedelic guitar and indie pop-rock drums. Their sound is a truly well-melded concoction of various genres—something that needs to be heard (and seen) to be properly understood.
“We’re going to be singing about love and friendship,” lead singer Harvey Merrit announced before they started their set. These themes were true throughout their songs and brought a lightness and liveliness to their performance.
The concert was intended to celebrate Ponytails’ single “Just Yours” – which is a fantastic song to say the least – as well as debut the song’s music video. Unfortunately for concert goers, the music video wasn’t finished in time for the show—but they say it will be ready soon. The guys also performed songs from their self-titled album. They are also in the middle of writing their full-length LP, which should be out in June.
I wasn’t familiar with any of the bands before attending this concert, but I can confidently say I am now a fan of all of them.
