CONCERT REVIEW: PONYTAILS W/ PEACH PYRAMID AND KIN KANYON AT THE FOX CABARET - APRIL 12TH, 2019
Three local bands, three equally entrancing performances. On April 12th, Vancouver bands Ponytails and Kin Kanyon teamed up with Victoria’s Peach Pyramid for a night of chill vibes, good music and the occasional drink or two (if so desired). The event was held at the Fox Cabaret, which is a small, intimate venue – making listening to these bands all that much more special.
Vancouver band, Kin Kanyon (pictured above), opened the show full of energy and charisma. Their psychedelic guitar vibe did a really good job setting the tone for the night, along with a soulful drum beat. They played some tracks off their new EP Trace of Love; the two that stood out to me the most were “Fauxtown” and “Every Time I Dream” – both of which made this introverted girl want to get up and dance. “Fauxtown” is a much more upbeat song with retro/funk elements, while “Every Time I Dream” has a chill feel and primarily features that psychedelic guitar sound.
Peach Pyramid took the stage next with soft and harmonious female vocals. With Jen Severtson on lead vocals, three backup singers, keyboard, bass, guitar and drums, there was a lot going on on such a small stage—but it was also a whole lot of awesome. They performed songs from their album Repeating Myself. There was so much emotion in their songs, and a whimsical vulnerability to each one. As soon as they played their first song, I found myself turning to my friend and simply saying, “Wow.” There was a really nice balance of upbeat songs versus the more mellow tracks that they performed. One of my favourites was “Trying,” where the vocal harmonies came together in a euphonic way, and the instrumentals layered beautifully.
Headlining was Ponytails, who gave an absolutely captivating performance. Beyond the songs themselves, the stage presence was phenomenal. Armed with great hair (and beard) and a tambourine in hand, frontman Harvey Merrit stole the show. There was a lot of hip action, arm movement, and of course fantastic vocals. The instrumentals were equally as enchanting, decorated with psychedelic guitar and indie pop-rock drums. Their sound is a truly well-melded concoction of various genres—something that needs to be heard (and seen) to be properly understood.
“We’re going to be singing about love and friendship,” lead singer Harvey Merrit announced before they started their set. These themes were true throughout their songs and brought a lightness and liveliness to their performance.
The concert was intended to celebrate Ponytails’ single “Just Yours” – which is a fantastic song to say the least – as well as debut the song’s music video. Unfortunately for concert goers, the music video wasn’t finished in time for the show—but they say it will be ready soon. The guys also performed songs from their self-titled album. They are also in the middle of writing their full-length LP, which should be out in June.
I wasn’t familiar with any of the bands before attending this concert, but I can confidently say I am now a fan of all of them.

The 10 Novels I Read on May (+1 bonus cuz it's that good)
Just wanted to say that @thedollymaker and @hippo141 are angels and this post is for you guys! Hope y’all find it useful <3
I’ll be rating and ranking the novels I’ve read from best to worst. Most (more like all) are romance novels which are also popular on BookTok. Writing the tl’dr non-spoiler ver here with more in-depth review on an upcoming post (bc tumblr deleted my half completed in-depth review and it’s nearing 1 am rn so yeah):
1. Love and Other Words by Christina Lauren - 5.1/5 🌟
I have to admit I read this on June 2022, and have read 4 more books since too but I just HAD to put this here because it's that good.
It tells the story of 2 best friends (who are almost soulmate-like imo) who have recently met again after years of losing contact. They had a falling out, but when they met everything just falls so perfectly. And we find out what happened in the past. It had the craziest twist (that i kinda knew was coming but oh my lord let me tell you that I BAWLED). BIG hurt/comfort theme. It reminds me of a warm hug and just - of Home. Home's embrace/warmth if you will.
2. It Ends With Us by Collen Hoover - 5/5 🌟
Girl meets the perfect Boy, but maybe there’s something more than meets the eye. Major page turner, this books makes me feel so much and at the same time left me feeling empty. I learnt valuable real life lessons from this book and you won’t regret picking this up. Hurt/Comfort piece. Also also, read the Author’s Note after ending the novel cuz it provided much needed clarity/resolution/peace.
3. All Your Perfects by Colleen Hover - 5/5 🌟
If you’ve read it ends with us and it left you feeling “it could’ve worked” ((not gonna spoil more but if you know, you know)), then boy is this the perfect one for you. It tells a story of this couple’s journey of overcoming terrible stuff ((think It’s Quiet Uptown, Hamilton)). And also, Best. Coho. Male. Lead. Ever. ((Graham my man, UGH)) So so Romantic.
4. The Love Hypothesis by Ali Hazelwood - 5/5 🌟
THIS IS THE CUTEST ROM-COM, way more lighthearted than the previous 2. Fake dating, ball of sunshine x broody/grumpy trope, age gap. It’s so cute and the banter is so amazing. I recommend.
5. Funny You Should Ask by Elisse Sussman - 4.6/5 🌟
This novel to me feels comforting. It’s a slow burn but in a comfortable sense? Journalist and Movie star had an unforgettable weekend that left much needed resolution. A decade later, they met again but both changed and grew for better or for worse. Sometimes, stories don’t have to be dramatic. And this novel feels genuine in a sense - a genuine adoration.
6. Verity by Colleen Hoover - 4.5/5 🌟
Murder-mystery, very suspenseful, very exciting, but leaves you mind fucked. Like after ending this, I was just like what the fuuuuck. This novels fucks with your head like ngl. Best opening scene. Young writer was tasked to finish another successful writer’s novel series after she is left incapacitated. But she found a manuscript that perhaps reveals so many terrible truths, or is it?
7. Ugly Love by Colleen Hoover - 4.1/5 🌟
This book is spicy, hot and romantic. It’s cute. Started a bit slow but it has quite a strong ending. Friends with benefits to lovers. Brother’s best friend. Pining. The my life is too much of a mess to love again trope. ((read this before november 9 for cameos))
8. November 9 by Colleen Hoover - 4/5 🌟
This book is fun and exciting. Boy and girl meets once a year, over a span of 5 (or 6?) years as their relationship grow. It’s endearing, how Ben (main guy) just encourages Fallon (the MC) to love herself more.
9. In Five Years by Rebecca Serle - 3.7/5 🌟
This perfectionistic, planning and success obsessed lawyer saw a vision 5 years into the future to find her planned life so different than it is now. I’d say that this book is not what you think it is. Imo this is not a romance novel, but more on friendship and learning to letting go. Life happens, it still goes on.
10. Confess by Colleen Hoover - 3.3/5 🌟
To love is to sacrifice is the essence of this book. It’s about 2 people who is sacrificing so much to love the people they love. But maybe, they need to learn to value themselves - to not discount themselves too much. And in finding that in each other.
11. Under One Roof by Ali Hazelwood - 3.2/5 🌟
Environmental engineer inherited a house from her mentor. But what said mentor forgot to mention was that half of the ownership of the house belonged to her nephew (who’s this lawyer at this BP-esque unethical capitalistic giga corporation). Enemies to friends to lovers. The stuck under one roof (thus the title) and the oh my god they were roommates trope. It’s short, it’s cute, it’s sweet.
----
Just wanted to say that Colleen Hoover is an amazing writer and reading it ends with you got me out of my reading slump. TikTok is a great place to find recommendations <3 Technically I read like 10 books in 2 weeks and it’s more books I’ve read in the past like what, decade? ((well maybe but like i’ve probably poured those energy into fanfics which could easily quadruple the number but eh)). What I’m trying to say is that this is fun, reading is amazing hahaha.
I’m planning on reading unhoneymooners, hopeless, maybe someday and some other more soon but let’s seee, feel free to drop recs on my askbox~
**EDIT** Ok y'all, Imma do a quick update on the ranks because I read 1 wonderful book that just OOFT.

I read 50 books this year!
I’d like to credit this achievement to a never-ending quarantine and that the goal seemed better than hanging around going full Jack Torrance. My favorites out of the bunch (and thus, reccs) are as follows:
Nothing to See Here – Kevin Wilson
A Tennessee politician’s wife goes to desperate measures when her stepchildren start spontaneously catching on fire. So goddamn weird, with a really sardonic lesbian protagonist as their reluctant nanny. Think Mary Poppins played by Elliott Page.
Saint X – Alexis Schaitkin
An American teenager shows up dead during her family’s Caribbean vacation – but it’s not one of the typical “Suburban White Woman with a perfect life in peril” books that popped up after Gone Girl. Her younger sister AND the man accused of murdering her explore the complexities of real life in a tourist destination, sexuality, and if a crime was even committed at all.
Bunny – Mona Awad
If you’re pissed at the whole “all fiction should be a 150k slowburn coffee shop AU and if a character does something bad that means the author is explicitly endorsing it uwu” trend, this one is for you. A female dark academia tale masquerading as sugar-y until it’s too late.
Enter the Aardvark – Jessica Anthony
Knocked me on my goddamn ass. A closeted gay congressman is having the worst day of his life when a stuffed aardvark with a complicated history shows up on his front step. Come talk to me about the “skins of your enemy” line because I will never, ever write anything that good.
The Holdout – Graham Moore
I bought this on a whim when on vacation with @kendallroy and @bobbibernstein and read the entire thing in one day. A really fun, twisty, mystery about a sequested jury and the Netflix special-making, racially divided media circus that surrounds it.
Famous Men Who Never Lived – K Chess
A sci-fi twist on the refugee experience when one hundred thousand Americans from an alternate dimension suddenly drop from the sky into our New York City to escape a nuclear war. So sad, so intriguing, like having Rod Serling tell you a bedtime story.
These Violent Delights – Micah Nemerever
A fictionalized version of the Leopold and Loeb case, except with way more gay sex and some of the most beautiful prose I’ve ever read in my life. For those who wish The Secret History was hornier and had slightly more women.
His Only Wife – Peace Adzo Medie
21-year-old Afi is married in absentia to the son of an incredibly rich and powerful Ghanaian family in an attempt to make him break up with the girlfriend they all hate. It’s like Princess Di and Charles but with much higher stakes and a less terrible male lead.

The Sound of Life - Chapter 13
During that time they also spent a few days on the set of Phantom. Jessica Harper, who played Phoenix, showed them around. William Finley was busy with his headaches. Winslow met him in the cafeteria where the actor was sitting with an ice pack on his head. He was wearing the leather outfit, but no make-up and his hair was messy.
"Hi," Winslow greeted him.
"Hi," William replied with a weak smile. "Jeez, how did you survive that helmet?! It's killing me!"
Winslow laughed. "I didn't really pay attention to that."
William chuckled. "I can imagine that." He put the ice pack down and sighed. "So, how you been doing?"
"Quite well. I met Michael Jackson a while ago."
William raised his eyebrows. "Really? Awesome."
"And you?"
"Yeah, well, most of the time I've been shooting the stuff here." William laughed. "I hope I'll get it right. I tend to act rather dramatically."
"Well, I am drama in person, so don't worry about that." Winslow grinned. "What are you guys shooting today?"
"The Beef scene. Kinda controversial stuff."
Winslow raised an eyebrow.
"Of course we're all rooting for you, man," William quickly assured him.
Winslow smiled. "I haven't met your Beef yet. What's his name?"
"Oh, it's Gerrit. Gerrit Graham. Funny guy." William laughed. "The cast gave him the plunger as a Christmas present. We painted it gold."
Winslow laughed as well. "A golden plunger?! How many times did you shove that thing in his face during the shower scene?"
A smile spread on William's face. "Six times."
"Six times?!" Winslow laughed. "Oh dear."
"It was a lot of fun."
"Oh, I believe that." Winslow chuckled.
The door opened and Phoenix and Jessica came in. Phoenix was holding Melody.
"A baby!", William squealed as soon as he spotted them.
"You mean me or Leach Junior?", Jessica asked.
"The cuter one."
"That would be me," Phoenix said and sat down next to Winslow. She smiled. "Hi William. Cool costume."
"Thanks."
"You look like my Pa," Melody said.
William laughed. "I hope so!"
The door opened and another actor walked in.
"Hi Gerrit!", Jessica greeted him and Winslow turned around.
Gerrit did not quite look like Beef, but Winslow was secretly happy about that. He wasn't sure whether someone who actually looked the same wouldn't have triggered something in him.
"Stay away from me, I'm having a cold!", Gerrit announced. "Hi Mr Leach, Mrs Leach. I'm Gerrit Graham."
"Hi."
"Hi."
"Brian asked me to tell you guys to buy some junk food."
Jessica jumped up and did a little chicken dance. "Junk food night!"
"Hyping us up before the Life at Last scene," Gerrit explained.
"Sounds like Brian," William laughed.
"Put on your shoes, Will, we're going shopping!", Jessica yelled.
What followed was a bizarre scene that could have been straight from a comedy movie. The cast, still in their costumes, and the Leaches marched out of the Majestic. People turned around in surprise. Somebody yelled "Hey, look, it's Winslow Leach!" He signed a couple autographs and the squad entered the supermarket. They marched straight into the candy aisle.
Five minutes later they left with five bags full of crisps, popcorn, chocolate and cookies.
They watched the final product a couple weeks later in a small room with a projector at Paul Hirsch's. Melody was at Lucy's. Phoenix and Winslow didn't think the movie would be suitable for a seven year old. Brian brought popcorn. Gerrit brought Pepsi. They all sat down comfortably and Paul Hirsch clicked play.
The movie started with a narration about Swan read by Rod Serling. Winslow raised an eyebrow. "Wow. You actually got the guy to do this?"
"He loved it," Brian replied.
The black background with the white bird then faded into the Juicy Fruits performing Goodbye Eddie Goodbye. It was obvious they were enjoying themselves a lot. Winslow had a good laugh at William's face in the poster scene.
"The Juicy Winslow Leach at the piano," Phoenix commented and the crew laughed.
The movie proceeded with Philbin and Swan discussing some evil plan in their box.
"I actually have no idea what they were talking about," Winslow noted. "Might as well have been the weather."
"Probably not," Jeffrey commented.
Everyone agreed that the shot with the camera circling around William playing the piano was great. They had a good laugh about his dramatic headbanging.
"I was lucky my glasses didn't fly off," the actor chuckled.
The next scene was Philbin stealing Winslow's music. George Memmoli played his part really well. And Winslow laughed like crazy at the way William pushed "Philbin" against the wall and the sound of shattering glass in the background.
What followed was Winslow being thrown out of Death Records. Brian complained about the Swan Song fiasco with Led Zeppelin. Then came the scene in which Winslow met Phoenix. Both leaned forward.
"This is gonna be interesting," Phoenix commented. This was followed by a "Jessie, your singing is amazing, by the way."
"Thanks," Jessica smiled.
"Your chemistry is on top," Winslow noted during the scene. "Ten of ten."
Phoenix laughed at Jessica's confused face after William flashed her with "I would never let my personal desires influence my aesthetic judgement". "Yes, I probably looked like that!"
"You did," Winslow confirmed.
Later they had another good laugh at William in a flower dress trying to sneak in. "I wish I'd witnessed that happening!", Harold yelled. Then Paul appeared.
Winslow was honestly impressed. The friendly little man had perfectly embodied Swan. This guy who was frequently referred to as the Human Muppet had captured the evil spirit like he'd been destined to play Swan. Winslow shivered. He wasn't the only one.
"Was that really acting?", Archie asked.
"Hopefully," Jeffrey mumbled.
"I don't want to know what ancient evils we unleashed," Harold said.
Paul just laughed. "Who knows."
The next scene was the cops finding a beaten up Winslow. This was followed by William dramatically yelling into the camera that he was innocent.
"That was brilliant," Winslow commented. "Perfectly on point!"
"You have no idea how many shots this face took me," William replied.
Next up came some evil little man announcing that Winslow's teeth would be pulled. The real Winslow bared his teeth and pulled a werewolf number which caused some giggles.
The scene then faded into Winslow's escape from Sing Sing prison. William quickly told an anecdote about all the times the scene with the box had gone wrong while Winslow's on-screen counterpart raged through Death Records.
Winslow knew what was coming up now and so did Phoenix. He suddenly felt her hand in his and turned his head a little to see her giving him a little reassuring smile. He was well aware that she was afraid that the following scene would trigger something in him.
It didn't. William saved the day. As soon as he realized what a bomb was about to hit he burst out dramatically explaining how the scene had almost gone wrong and how he almost became Winslow's "Exact Doppelganger". Winslow objectively admired William's remarkable acting skills and secretly wondered why the actor wasn't famous yet.
The next scene caused Brian to explain why the split screen he'd used was a stroke of genius. The crew listened in amusement until the bomb exploded.
Next up came a bit with Swan in his office and then Winslow confronting him. The height difference between William and Paul was utterly hilarious. The scene was followed by Jessica singing Special to me for the audition. Everyone marveled at how similar her voice was to Phoenix'.
Then came the scene in which Swan adjusted Winslow's voice box and made Winslow sign the contract. Next up Paul singing Phantom's Theme with montages of William and Jessica with a black background. It looked wonderfully dramatic.
The next trigger came up now. It was Beef.
Thanks to the fact that Gerrit didn't look quite exactly like Beef Winslow relaxed again. However, he had to admit that accent and attitude were on point. Gerrit blushed when he told him.
There was the epic scream scene which caused Winslow's to have a laughing flash at the drama of William's acting. During the shower scene Gerrit mentioned that he did not recommend snorting powdered lactose. His acting in that scene and the next one were hilarious. Then Harold performed Somebody Super Like You followed by Life at Last and during Life at Last Winslow excused himself for a few minutes and left to prevent himself from getting a panic attack. He came back in to George Memmoli yelling "Somebody get a fire extinguisher!" and thoroughly enjoyed the Old Souls and dressing room scene, as well as the first rooftop scene. During the second rooftop scene Phoenix wrapped herself around Winslow, who made it a point to marvel at William's acting and compliment him on it until the actor was blushing.
What followed was Paul confronting William. Again everyone was crazed at how this human muppet played Swan. Then came the tape room and the wedding, and after a very dramatic death scene for Swan they got the ending which was slightly differing from reality: Winslow's death.
Phoenix laughed at how Jessica managed to look so desperate. "I just thought of school," Jessica commented. Winslow was delighted by the dramatic ending scene with the flaming bird sealing William's doom. "Awesome. Perfect. Like, really perfect. Great job."
"Release?", Brian asked.
"Hell yeah, release!"

Caught in the undertow of the Trump riptide, Graham now finds himself in a plot that resembles one that might have been written by Rod Serling for The Twilight Zone. Serling always ended the program with a line or two that served as the moral of the tale. This one could have been written for LG:
“A scared, angry little man who never got a break. Now he has everything he’s ever wanted – and he’s going to have to live with it for eternity.” –The Twilight Zone episode, “A Nice Place to Visit”
And forever is a long, long time, bless his little heart.

Toys R Us UK and Maplin enter into administration after failing to secure buyers
In a major blow to the retail industry, Toys R Us UK and Maplin have fallen into administration, collectively putting 5,500 jobs at risk. The companies fell victim to changing consumer behaviour, which saw them favouring online marketplaces over the high street, and were forced into administration after failing to secure buyers. Toys R Us enters insolvency after a difficult year The embattled toy chain risked collapse in the UK in December 2017 but agreed to a company voluntary arrangement (CVA) which saw it restructuring its operations and planning to close at least 26 stores. The rescue plan involved the Pension Protection Fund (PPF) agreeing to inject £9.8m into its pension scheme between 2019-2020. However, continued poor sales coupled with a looming VAT bill of £15m saw it seeking a buyer, and inability to secure one forced the company to turn to administration. Moorfields has been appointed as administrator, and partner Simon Thomas said the firm would be “conducting an orderly wind-down of the store portfolio over the coming weeks.” However, he confirmed that attempts to find a buyer were ongoing: “We will make every effort to secure a buyer for all or part of the business.” The toy chain has 3,000 staff across 105 stores. Thomas said all stores will remain open until further notice. The UK branch’s collapse comes after its US parent company filed for bankruptcy last year. Philip Marshall QC at Serle Court said it is surprising that Toys R Us didn’t go into insolvency sooner, considering the fate of its US parent company and increasing competition with online marketplaces. He said: “One question that may need proper investigation is whether the board acted properly in deferring administration in the face of market pressures (and ongoing losses) in the hope of securing a sale.” “Given that there is apparently a deficit to both the Revenue and Pension Protection Fund the outcome for trade creditors cannot be good and they may wish a proper investigation to be undertaken by the administrators to determine whether there is culpability here”. Maplin points to Brexit and changing consumer behaviour Meanwhile, electronics company Maplin fell into administration after talks with potential buyers fell through. CEO Graham Harris said the company struggled with “sterling devaluation post-Brexit, a weak consumer environment and the withdrawal of credit insurance”, factors which made raising capital “impossible”. Insurers cut credit cover last year because of Maplin’s falling profits. Zelf Hussain, Toby Underwood and Ian Green of PwC have been appointed joint administrators, in order “to achieve the best possible outcome for all of our colleagues and stakeholders”, according to Harris. Hussain commented: “Our initial focus as administrators will be to engage with parties who may be interested in acquiring all or part of the company. We will continue to trade the business as normal whilst a buyer is sought.” The electronics chain has 2,500 UK staff across 200 stores, which will remain open for the time being. Hussain said: “Staff have been paid their February wages and will continue to be paid for future work while the company is in administration.” Creditor claims and tax liabilities Adam Deacock, a Barrister at Radcliffe Chambers commented that finding a buyer willing to absorb the companies’ debts and liabilities will be tough, and as a result “the administrators’ concern is simply to produce the best result for creditors” by getting as much as possible for the assets. He added: “As taxpayers we should all be concerned as the immediate cause of Toys R Us’ administration appears to be its unpaid VAT bill of £15m and other unpaid tax debts can be expected.” “The fact that this administration follows so soon after Toys R Us’ CVA this Christmas shows that pressure is coming from all directions.” “The administrators will not have long to secure a result, as cash to fund continuing trading will no doubt be very tight and the chances are that if there was an obvious deal to make, someone would have done it already. In theory this should all be the subject of a creditors’ meeting but in practice the administrators may have to move before one can be convened.” Blick Rothenberg encouraged creditors to make a claim to the liquidators as an unsecured creditor. The firm explained that there is “an order of priority regarding who ranks above who when a company goes into liquidation”, and “trade creditors would be below secured creditors such as banks and the company’s employees.” Commenting on what shareholders can do, Helena Kanczula, corporate tax director at Blick Rothenberg said: “For shareholders in companies that have been liquidated, this is treated as a disposal event and shareholders should be aware that a capital loss may therefore crystallise. This can be claimed up to four years after the end of the tax year and offset against other gains in excess of the annual exempt amount.” Blick Rothenberg added that for VAT bad debt relief, the amount will have had to gone unpaid for six months from the date when the invoice was due, and so may take some time to come to fruition. Furthermore, the firm advises that any potential bad debts from customers in financial difficulty should be provided against and corporation tax/income tax relief can be claimed on the deduction, thus reducing the tax liability. The firm added that HMRC may agree to instalment arrangements if the businesses are not able to pay tax on time, pointing to the folding of Carillion, when HMRC offered to provide practical advice and guidance to affected businesses.
