One of the things I adore about Bungo Stray dogs is how it challenges our ideas about what a “main character” is. Atsushi is undeniably the protagonist, the story begins when his hero’s journey begins and follows it. It somehow manages to fit the hero’s journey perfectly and challenge it at the the same time by simply expanding the scope of the audience’s perspective. Atsushi is the protagonist and we watch every part of his hero’s journey unfold, but we also get immense insight into the mentor/shapeshifter’s backstory and plots.
It’s like if the Harry Potter books followed both Harry and Dumbledore from the beginning, with flashbacks to Dumbledore’s past. If that happened Harry would become, in the reader’s eyes, a piece on Dumbledore’s chessboard because we would see all his machinations from the beginning. That’s exactly what happens in BSD with Dazai. Instead of us seeing Atsushi as the main character who everything revolves around we see Dazai as the mastermind who shapes all the events of the story around Atsushi. Instead of seeing Dazai as a mysterious mentor figure with a dark past shrouded in mystery that gives Dazai wisdom of experience we see him as a flawed person with dubious morals who is trying to be good but doesn’t know how, someone who’s been hurt terribly and hurt others even worse. In turn, Atsushi’s character appears more naive and pathetic, his accomplishments and growth don’t seem like his so much as Dazai’s. He behaved exactly as Dazai anticipated because Dazai manipulated him and the situation for that to happen. It makes Atsushi a tool for Dazai, makes his accomplishments Dazai’s. But if the story was told to us omitting all of Dazai’s behind the scenes manipulations Atsushi would feel like any other protagonist. Dazai would feel like Dumbledore, helping from the shadows rather than pulling strings from them.
Anyway, I’m a lit nerd if you can’t tell and I think Asagiri is a genius.

Personal rant, but like
Over a decade ago I remember being immensely frustrated with the storyline in Harry Potter (probably because I read it as an adult and not as a child) where the main bad guys take over the magical government, and everyone just... let's it happen. Even though they have literally seen this before and know exactly the evil this ill cause because it's literally happened before.
And that same feeling, magnified by 10000%, is what I'm feeling right now in the VERY REAL US of A. Like. What the hell??? 75% of the voters in the town I live in voted for the most ridiculously obvious monster? AGAIN??? REALLY???
And now that monster is going to be in power AGAIN??? Giving the opportunity to make everything worse for the vulnerable and disenfranchised AGAIN?? Did we learn nothing?? Are we all spineless cowards? Have we no imagination, to conceive of a better option, to work towards a better world?? Have we no heart, to care for the unfortunate and love our neighbors of many flavors? Have we no conscience, no values, no soul?

I challenged myself to paint at least(!) one Sirius Black art a month this year, so here is the April painting! And as I haven’t had much time in April, I made a more detailed artwork :') Well, but it was a lot of fun! I also added a close up because I really like his face in this one :)

modern marauders au where dorcas goes tiktok viral for her slightly (100%) unhinged "get ready with me"s
examples include:
"grwm to go bail my roommate's brother out of jail"
"grwm to go tell my friend being his crush's fake-boyfriend is a stupid idea."
"grwm to go bail my roommate's brother's boyfriend out of jail"
"grwm to hold a lizard intervention for my roommate, who can't understand eight pet geckos is enough geckos."
"grwm to go get an apology gecko for my roommate."
"grwm to go get paid back for bailing my friends out of jail."

Two of my favorite Genshin characters have something in common that is very me to realize. They seem like they should be in one Hogwarts house but are very much in its rival.
Childe. First meet him he seems like a manipulative antagonist, wears silver/grey, water element, is rich and arrogant. Total Slytherin. Nope. He is the most Gryffindor person in the game! He’s brash, easy to manipulate, absolutely adores his family, never backs down from a challenge no matter how stupid it is, weirdly trusting despite his background and how he should probably know better… I could go on. He’s so Gryffindor it’s actually sad.
Thoma. First meeting he’s helpful and kind and selfless, every one loves him and he bravely protects others. Wears a lot of red, fire element. Seems Gryffindor. But he’s such a Slytherin! He’s sly and manipulative and he is loved by everyone because he knows exactly how to charm them. But he’s not making friends so much as cultivating connections to help him later. He’s a fixer. The people stupid enough to get on his bad side are terrified of him. He can destroy a person and he will. Without hesitation. Without getting his hands dirty.

Teacher: Harry James Potter! I want you to call your parents this instant! 8-year-old Harry, who has absolutely been anticipating this exact moment: *pulls out a Ouija board* This might take a minute.

Adopted Harry Potter screaming, crying while his friend group does a hear me out cake, and one idiot (probably one of the twins or something) decides to put Snape on the cake. Three more people nod in agreement. He is traumatized for life.

i enjoy ur bird abode thoughts! I was a genuine enjoyer of the show when it was airing, I’m no die hard fan though and love to see ppls personal takes on the overall story/plot. Im curious if you also would agree or have any thoughts on the impacts The Mouse’s cancellation had on the shows ability to be more than it was? srry im not super eloquent with my words, but basically ur response to that ask got me wondering if part of the reason the show like genuinely wasnt all that ground breaking or unique in the end plot wise (other than the villain faces consequences in the end ig) as far as YA/Teen animation goes, was because of The Mouse’s inability to let the writers flesh out the show before gutting it? i have a negative bias toward The Mouse franchise and obviously dont know anything about how writing a show under the eyes of a franchise that big would work, its just smth that rattles around in my head and wanna know what u think!
Well to an extent, but I think it's much more the effect the studio had on how the owl house started out as rather than it not getting a full season at the end - It didn't escape my noticed that the show was initially announced as being a "horror comedy" when it doesn't really seem like either, especially by the second season, and yeah, the original pitch bible is obviously aiming for that much more than the show proper is as it goes along (and is honestly seems quite a bit more funny, weird, and dark, with an overarching plotline about a giant bug being used to religiously suppress people, eda able to cure her curse by killing luz, and one of the major characters being a teen boy awoken from a sleeping curse who ends up being a weird little bigot because he's from the 13th century, among other things)
Tumblr media
(side note, i just noticed they actually specifically describe the thing i assumed the show was gonna be about here. huh.) but ultimately the bulk of the show that was actually made seems very influenced by a writing team that was genuinely interested in making a tropey YA fantasy story rather than just being mandated to. I mean even in what aired you can see the show sort of settle in ways that feel less like studio interference and more like, you know, art students creating their ideal fantasy show, like how King is clearly Eda's roommate who's funny because he looks like and sounds like a little dog despite being an adult man at the beginning but by the end they've made him her adopted sad backstory son who's explicitly a child. While I think a third season would have made the show as it existed better, because they clearly didn't get to finish the plot they wanted to (frankly to the point where some major aspects of the show are a bit confusing, I'm still not sure what a grimwalker is), I don't really fault the show for that but also don't think that hypothetical season (which pretty clearly would have been mostly about the magic school teens going to normal school) would suddenly flip around into something that I personally found interesting and subversive. Nor should it, really; again, it being Queernorm Harry Potter thing is clearly the intended appeal of the show, it's not really a flaw but just not a genre I'm personally interested in when compared to what I initially expected the show to be.
HOWEVER I will say they robbed little weird girls of their representation and that can't be forgiven
