D.P. (Season 2)
TV Shows/Dramas watched in 2023
D.P. (Season 2, 2023, South Korea)
Director: Han Jun Hee
Writers: Kim Bo Tong & Han Jun Hee
Mini-review:
The moment has finally come: Netflix's best Korean Original has made its return with a second season. And these two years of waiting have been more than worth it. It seemed impossible but, somehow, this new season is even better than the first one. It preserves all of its many strengths, and then it takes them to the next level. Both the directing and the writing are amazingly intense. I spent six whole hours on the edge of my seat, biting my nails to the quick, and the last two episodes left me breathless. I also loved the show's attempts at experimenting, like the musicality in episode 3 or the horror undertones in episode 4. As for the acting, is there anything left to say? This is a cast full of incredible actors, and all of them give career-best performances. This time round, Jung Hae In and Son Suk Ku are probably the MVPs, but everyone does a flawless job. To sum up, this second season blew away my sky-high expectations, and I really hope we get a third one, cause TV shows don't get better than this.
P.S. There's a lot of triggering content here, so please be careful with that. Those of you who watched the first season already know this, but I'm saying it just in case.

Watching Dream on Netflix and there are so many Be Melodramatic easter eggs.. not to mention so many familiar faces from Be Melo.
Unsurprising because both are written and directed by Lee Byeong Heon, but I still find myself excited every time I spot a Be Melo reference.
Looks like another Be Melo rewatch is inevitable ^_^

Agence France-Presse at The Guardian:
South Korea’s opposition said on Thursday it had filed an impeachment motion against the acting president, Han Duck-soo, in an escalating row over the composition of the constitutional court which will decide whether to remove his predecessor from office. South Korea became mired in a political crisis when President Yoon Suk Yeol, currently suspended, declared martial law on 3 December. Yoon was stripped of his duties by parliament on 14 December over the dramatic declaration, but a constitutional court ruling upholding the decision is necessary to complete the impeachment process. The court is however currently short of three judges. While it can go ahead with its six members on the bench, a single dissenting vote would reinstate Yoon. The opposition wants Han to approve three more nominees to fill the nine-member bench, something that he has so far refused to do, essentially leaving both sides in a deadlock. The opposition Democratic party therefore says the acting president should be impeached too. “We have filed the motion ... and will report it to the plenary session today,” MP Park Sung-joon said of the action against Han. “We will put it to a vote tomorrow.” Han’s refusal to formally appoint the three judges proves that he “does not have the will or qualification to uphold the constitution”, the Democratic party’s floor leader, Park Chan-dae, told reporters. Han has said that he would certify the judges’ appointments only if his ruling People Power party (PPP) and the opposition reach a compromise on the nominees.
[...] If the opposition passes the impeachment motion against Han in Friday’s vote, it would mark the first time democratic South Korea has impeached an acting president. In Han’s place, the finance minister, Choi Sang-mok, would step in as acting president.
South Korea could be on the verge of having two Presidents impeached within less than a month.

Just watched the final episodes of TWOE and I'm still trying to process it… what made me the saddest was the fact the main couple broke up. In a way, the crime aspect is so intricate but the core four had so much feelings for each other and the screenplay only shows a glimpse of it. I guess that the dynamics between Junmo and Gicheol weren't fully explored. Their friendship had eveything to be amazing and it didn't feel like that in the end. Also Euijeong loosing Junmo after all of this, after the fact he only did this so he wouldn't be mistreated by her family. In a way, I don't doubt she would be the one to finish the relationship because even with Gicheol being a criminal he was close to her and he died in her arms and inside of her house. At the end all that was left was suffering. Anyway, JCW deserves a Baeksang for his work in this, it required a lot of facial expressions and he conveyed so many nuanced feelings
The main couple break up - If we can even call that, because you might as well say they're still together, even if it's just on paper (a family of cops don't divorce etc) - was actually my last straw. Mostly because it made no sense with Euijeong's character throughout the show. Of course, she was sad, scared he would get hurt and at the end afraid of what he was turning... but she also stayed by his side through it all and it just makes no sense Junmo would be so jealous to the point he wouldn't forgive the woman he killed a man to protect. He did the same thing to her! I believe he had feelings for Hae Ryeon, the same way I believe Euijeong had feelings for Gi Cheol... but for me it would have been more powerful if they at least got together at the end? Like, commit to something! to infidelity, to a marriage, to partners in crime or cops above it all. In the end, the show chose to do nothing. The police stayed the same, is Junmo more corrupt now? I don't know. [The final episode of Watcher [mild-spoiler ahead] left me wondering about the future of Han Suk Kyu's and Seo Kang Joon's characters, because after all they have seen (and done) are they the same? Can we trust them? It really left that question hanging. But TWOE finale just left me thinking Junmo is kinda sad and traumatized, but mostly because he lost his wife, kind of. I feel like my main issue is that the show was committed to the institutions I dislike the most (the church and the police). So we must punish the sins and we must be good and in the end, the evil is locked up and the good are repenting (because they've sinned!), but no one rebelled. Even Hae Ryeon's dream is to be what... a normal girl? But why? It's a gangster show, I wasn't looking for a happy ending, but I was hoping for an ending that wasn't boring at least. An ending that made me feel something. You know when you watch/read something and in the end a character says/does something and you just get it? It all comes together and it feels like you've been punched? The show had the opportunity to deliver that in the end, especially after how insane the past episode was, but they were too coward, I feel. And it's sad because it had a lot of potential, a charming casting, and Wi Ha Joon's charisma. As for baeksang, I do think this was probably his best work but this year gave us Ryu Seung Ryong and Nam Goongmin which for me were another lever completely.

Marry My Husband dream cast
{Note: Just imagine that they're the correct age, or that the makeup artist did their makeup magic.}
Maybe Han Hyojoo as Kang Jiwon. I do think she would execute a bigger transformation. (I like Park Minyoung but she's not tall and looks elfin no matter how they try to frump her up.)
Maybe Park Shinhye or Yoo Inna as Jung Sumin.
Jung Woosung as Park Minhwan. He's just got big extravert energy, and I could see him playing a shameless cheater. Other actors could pull off this character well, too, but I think most would portray more of a stereotypical sneak while I could see Jung Woosung playing up the audacity.
Won Bin or Lee Jonghyuk as Yoo Jihyuk. Won Bin can pull off a certain introverted masculinity well suited to Jihyuk. Lee Jonghyuk is less chiseled but he looks like he could be related to my dream cast pick for Heeyeon.
Lee Hanee as Yoo Heeyeon. Like look at this pic: she almost has a knowing look like "I got you, bestie," and she looks like she would know how to identify knockoff jewelry. (The actress they chose does have the eyebrows and the youthful enthusiasm down, though.)
Lee Seunggi as Baek Eunho. He's got the cozy childhood friend sort of look. (Lee Gikwang is cute but why the heck does he keep bulging his eyes out? Was he filming for a cop thriller in between Marry My Husband shoots and he forgot he's supposed to be in a romance drama?)
PLAYIN, CC BY 3.0, via Wikimedia Commons
Jin Seoyeon as Yang Juran. Someone who looks sharp enough to harbor suspicions of Manager Kim. Someone who looks like she still has the energy to raise kids. Someone who looks good in a short girlboss haircut! (Gong Minjung's Juran makes looks tired and beat down. I get that her husband is garbage, but the Juran in the webtoon doesn't seem like she's reached such a low point yet.)
Kwon Yul as Manager (?) Lee. At this point it's less dream cast and more me racking my brain for a guy with the right look that's done a decent job in a similar enough character before. But I had to name someone because I think they're trying to rewrite his character with a very different one, Lee Suk-joon, a much older, crabbier-looking guy who has no chemistry with Gong Minjung, and I can't let that slide. But anyway, honestly, Kwon Yul seems like a pretty darn good fit anyway.
