Hello!
Welcome to another one of my obsessions. Today, I will be explaining why the song Holiest by Glass animals featuring Tei Shi is one of the most perfect songs for Solavellan. Listen to it here. It’s a fairly short song. But the smooth groovy tunes that Glass Animals are known for adds a relaxed feeling that’s easy to vibe to. Just like most of their songs, the beat picks up toward the end. Causing a bit of tension between the two singers.
The song itself describes a one sided relationship where the male is suggested to be narcissistic. All the while, the woman is basically mocking him and describing his godlike behavior. This can also be interrupted as a denial in worshiping him and also the warning of his downfall. All three can be combined for a nice angsty, ambiguous, and ominous feeling.
I’m sorry you didn’t ask for this... But let’s get into it.
[Verse 1: Tei Shi] Climb until you're getting high Be a part of the scene like you're living your dream Walk the room like you're on fire
I’m already going to stop it here. Midway through the verse. Right here. You can see the mock worship already. She’s talking about his ego. Our main guy Solas attempts to be humble. But there are many times he let’s his arrogance slip. And a bit of Fen’Harel comes out. Truth be told, they’re both very prideful.
Like your chasing the truth, gripping tight to your youth Gripping tight, gripping tight to your you-ou-ou-ou-outh Like you're cha-, like you're chasing the truth
I cannot stress the correlation here enough. Grip on tight to your youth. I am referring this to Fen’Harel and his rebellious acts as the Betrayer. When he awakens, he still holds onto that. And he wants to finish what he started.
[Hook: Tei Shi] But you're the holiest thing I know Yes, you're the holiest thing, holiest thing I know.
This is where I run through so many different meanings.
1. Solas/Fen’Harel is literally the holiest thing she knows. He’s a god of the elven pantheon. To her, he is quite possibly the most powerful person she’s ever met.
2. The mocking. You can almost hear the eye roll. For those Solavellans that want to chase Fen’Harel down and stop him from destroying the world as they know it, this a good stab at his ego. The sarcasm here can be heavily implied.
3. And in contrast, for the Solavellans that worship Fen’Harel and want to help him bring glory back to the elves, this is a statement that places him on a pedestal. It makes him a hero of sorts. Someone she looks up to.
The good thing about this song, the lyrics, and her voice is that all these things can be implied. And depending on how you want to interpret the lyrics will change how you hear the tone.
Here’s where it gets good:
[Verse 2: Tei Shi and Glass Animals] Look at the mess you've made (female) Babe, I'm not what you think (male) Come on, listen to me (male)
I want to slam my face into the keyboard this is so good. Regardless of how you feel about Solavellan, this guy made a huge mess. Of the pantheon. Of the Veil. Of the world. Of his relationship. He lied. You can’t deny that thing. He messed up. He lied. And now he’s going to run away with it. However, he still loves Lavellan. And though it doesn’t matter what she thinks, it still hurts him to know she might hate him. He absolutely wants to convince her he is doing the right thing. Again, though. His hubris and his mind are set. There is no changing it. He truly believes what he is doing is more important than anything.
Now all I do is feel afraid (female) Can't you see that I'm here (male) Can't you see I've been played (male)
Again, regardless your take on Solavellan, the fear is there. She’s afraid of more lies. She’s afraid of hurting her people. She’s afraid of failing. She’s afraid of... a lot. I don’t care how in love your Lavellan is. Even if she believes in what Fen’Harel wants, she’s scared. There is a fear and excitement when your following a god. And Fen’Harel... he wants to keep you there. He wants you to believe he’s the only one that’s right. Like he’s the only thing that’s going to save you. And he wants you to believe that he is doing it for the right reasons. Narcissists will always blame something “tragic” in their past for their poor actions. And they will use that past as a way to get others to join them. To relate to them and get them on his side. I’m not saying he’s a narcissist, because he didn’t start out that way. But I am saying the power and the need to be right has changed him.
Then I'm dest-, then I'm destined to flame (both)
Ohoho. We’re talking about war, here. We’re talking about destruction and war. The hesitancy here indicated by the repeat shows a bit of pause between both of them. They’re in love. They want a happy ending. But they know they likely will never get it. They’re destined to fail.
The song then goes back into the hook. And here we have the second bit of worship/mockery. I see this as Lavellan looking to Solas, knowing all these things and knowing what will be destroyed, and feeling somewhat helpless. She stares into the face of a god. And whether she’s fighting him or joining him, she’s throwing everything away. Her life is now revolved around him. The holiest thing she knows.
Also a side note, I love Solas. I love his complex character. I love his implied villainy. I love the misunderstood bad guy. I love the tragedy in his romance. I can’t say enough how much I love crying about it. And that’s all.

You like 2gether? Great! Check out these series now
I’m sorry the title sounds vaguely like an ad, it wasn’t my intention oof. Anyway, here are five (+2) series you should watch and fill the void (in no particular order)!
THEORY OF LOVE (2019)
You can find it here.
“Third is a filmology major and a member of the Savage Team along with his best friends Two, Bone, and Khai, but he has a secret. Third has been secretly in love with Khai for years.”
Theory of Love is one of these series you don’t expect to like that much, but they surpise you. First of all, I still remember falling so deeply in love with this friend squad; they were so fun and wholesome (and yes maybe dickheads sometimes but that’s life). They were all so nicely written characters and I was always looking forward to seeing them every week. The story is a bit sad at first, but it will also make you laugh a lot. It also have lots of movie references! Loved that. Honestly, I’m not very good at reviews, but I can definitely say TOL was a series I still think fondly of, even to this day, like half a year later.
DARK BLUE KISS (2019)
You can find it here.
“Kao and Pete being in a blissful romance, have grown closer. But with Kao being closeted from his mother, he fears the dreaded thought of her finding out. His mother then introduces Non, a son of a colleague, as he requires tutoring from Kao. With Non constantly giving off ‘iffy’ vibes towards Kao, it only fuels Pete’s jealousy.”
I recently watched DBK and I was really taken aback by it. The fact that it dealt with some specific topics surprised me. We see Kao being scared of coming out to his mother, him being forced into a difficult situation mostly because he was trying to economically support his sister, Kao and Pete having problems because of miscommunication etc. It was something different. Of course, there were some bits I didn’t like, like the possesivness of Pete, but you can’t have everything in life. Overall a very good series, I would definitely recommend.
Note; DBK is a sequel of Kiss Me Again the series. You don’t have to watch it. If you want to, I’d recommend watching only the PeteKao cuts on Youtube.
HISTORY3: TRAPPED (2019)
You can find it here.
“The cooperation between police and the people create a harmonious new society. Police who are filled with justice are turned into the personal protection for gangsters. But one police officer becomes trapped in the underworld, as he develops feelings for a gang leader.”
God, I just realized how much I miss Trapped. It was one of the first asian series I watched and really loved. Look at the summary! It’s literally a fanfic I loved it. Jokes aside though, really nice plot, well written characters, nice twists, lots of funny moments, happy enging, what else would someone ask for? I fell in love with the characters and their stories. Literally, can’t even think straight and write a coherent review of this, I just love it, trust me.
WHAT DID YOU EAT YESTERDAY? (2019)
You can find it here.
“Kakei Shiro is a 45 year old lawyer who works at a small law firm. He is a good cook and a meticulous and thrifty person who keeps the monthly food budget to 25,000 yen. His partner Yabuki Kenji is the affable hairdresser in his 40s. The two of them share a two-bedroom apartment and the finer points of two men living together comes up at the dining table every day. Although two of them have been in a relationship for three years and Kakei’s parents know he is gay, Kakei never shares the fact that he is gay or Kenji is his partner to anyone.”
Looking for something sweet and wholesome? Watch this one. I have to thank whoever recommended this to me (I’m terribly sorry I forgot). The story of two middle-aged gay men, living their life in peace (most of the time at least). Involves lots of cooking, to the point it always made me hungry. It’s a relaxing series, one that will warm up your heart and make you smile.
HISTORY2: CROSSING THE LINE (2018)
You can find it here.
“Qiu Zi Xuan was an excellent volleyball player in the past, but he had to give up on on his dreams due to his injuries, but he still participates in the volleyball-related training. During the training, he meets a guy, Xia Yu Hao, a guy with a really bad temper who gets easily infuriated with people that make him angry, but he strives to acquire what he persistently wants to achieve.”
A lovely story. I think I watched it in like one afternoon. I couldn’t really resist to the dumbassery of Yu Hao. A story about coming to terms with your feelings and going after what you want. That’s it and, honestly, that’s more than one needs.
HONORARY MENTIONS (not bl, I just fucking love these series)
WHEN WE WERE YOUNG (2018)
You can find it here.
“A nostalgic story that revolves around high school students during the year 1996.
While chasing down a bike thief during the summer, Yang Xi gets injured by a lab explosion that renders her unable to compete in a long-distance run. When school opens, she realizes that the culprit behind her misfortune has transferred to her class and has even taken her position as class president. He is Hua Biao, a hot-blooded, rash and gifted genius of the science department. Hua Biao’s arrival immediately puts his classmates on guard and he must prove himself to be accepted by the class. Later on, they go through lots of ups and downs in life.”
Probably one of my favourite series ever and trust me I’ve watched quite a few. First things first, the OST. God, catch me still signing it under my breath. The visuals? Absolutely amazing. The plot and the characters? Honestly superb. The quotes? Made me cry every single time. This series gave me such a strong feeling of nostalgia, it had this whole vibe of being young and reckless, but at the same time knowing that you will grow old, that the world will change, that you will change with it. Imagine this; you are laying on your bed on a hot summer afternoon, you are young, loads of books are waiting for you, sprawled all over your dest, the radio is on, playing some old melodies mixed with static, you are reading a book or comics and you are waiting for your friends to come. This is it. This is the feeling this series has left me with. I know I may not be making sense for most people, but our languages sometimes are uncapable of expressing our feelings. You just have to experience it yourself.
THE LONGEST DAY IN CHANG’AN (2019)
You can find it here and here.
“744 A.D., Chang’an, the cosmopolitan heart of the Tang Empire. The remnants of a vanquished Central Asian kingdom have infiltrated the world’s largest city for a planned attack during the Lantern Festival. Meanwhile, the court is fraught with infighting. The aging Emperor is expected to announce the regency of the Right Chancellor during the festival and retreat to the mountains with his young lover. If the Right Chancellor becomes the regent, the reformist Crown Prince risks being deposed—or worse. Intelligence chief Li Bi, a young Taoist priest, and ally of the Crown Prince has only 24 hours to prevent both the attack and the regency. After a botched attempt to capture the infiltrators, Li Bi and his team call in the services of death row prisoner Zhang Xiao Jing — a war veteran, beloved police chief, and murderer of his last direct superior.”
Keep in mind that this is one of the most expensive (if not the most expensive) productions on China. The whole series covers the events of one day, one single day. What they did is actually amazing. The plot is so well structured, the costumes and set perfectly made, the actors plainly great. It might take a couple of episodes to understand the plot because especially on the first one there are a lot of things happened and lots of information getting thrown around, but it quickly becomes way more clear. The music, the twists, the morally ambiguous characters; one of the best things I’ve seen. I cried, I laughed, I feel in love and I now realize that no matter how much I praise this series, it won’t be enough.
Lowkey hope I haven’t done any mistakes because I don’t proof read anything and that’s the hill I’ll die on.

Bias Question Tag!
I was tagged by my love @dong-hyucks !!
Rules: Write down your top 10 biases and answer the following questions.
1) Kim Yugyeom (Got7) 2) Park Jimin (Bts) 3) Jung Jaehyun (Nct) 4) Ten (Nct) 5) Yoo Kihyun (Monsta X) 6) Byun Baekhyun (Exo) 7) Kim Jongin (Exo) 8) Im Jaebum (Got7) 9) Jeon Jungkook (Bts) 10) Lee Donghyuck (Nct)
1. Between 1 and 4: Who would you rather kiss?
This is SUCH a hard question omg (I consider 1-4 my ults so i’m suffering)! Both Yug and Ten are sososo kissable, and I cannot choose an answer for this question filjdkfsd;lfksdl. Like Yug is so tall and I’m so short so it’d be adorable but then Ten is a bit shorter so we’d be closer... idek there’s no definite answer to this it’s just whatever you guys take from that little blab I’ll just kiss both of them it’s fine
2. Between 2 and 7: Who would be your best friend?
Both of them are adorable dancer best friend cuties but I think i’m gonna have to go with Jimin on this one! Jimin was my first ult bias and let me tell you guys, it’s scary how much the two of us have in common. We’re so similar sometimes! I feel like me and Jimin’s personalities match very well together and we’d get along as best friends!
3. Between 5 and 10: Who has the better voice?
YOU’RE ACTUALLY KIDDING ME OK, of course it’s my luck that two of the legendary vocalists on my list are put against each other for this question... I don’t wanna choose, but I’m gonna have to choose Kihyun. Ever since I first heard his voice I was so shook by it, that boy can SING. His vocals bring me to tears sometimes omgpsmgf (I love hyuck’s unique and gorgeous voice so much tho ajflmpfj i hate this question)
4. Between 1 and 8: Who is the funniest?
I mean since I’m absolute Yugyeom trash and he’s basically my ult ult im gonna say Yug, but I just want everyone to know that I find Jaebum absolutely hysterical too!!
5. Between 6 and 9: Who would you date?
THESE QUESTIONS ARE SO HARD FML but I’m gonna say Jungkook, just because he’s closer to my age and he’s legit walking boyfriend material. Plus, this is so weird, but whenever I have a dream with Bts in it, he’s ALWAYS the one i’m dating, even tho Jimin is my ult. It’s sososo weird but I feel like me and Jungkook would actually be such a compatible couple. (I LOVE MY BAEK THO)
6. Between 9 and 10: Who would you do a collaboration with?
I do sing so this is actually a pretty hard question since both of them are vocalists... I mean I think I wanna say Donghyuck because his voice is so beautiful and it needs more recognition so I’m saying Hyuck! (Even tho I’d do anything to do a duet with either of them I mean Jungkook is called golden for a reason!)
7. Between 4 and 8: Who is the best dancer?
TEN, NO QUESTION! (I’m sorry jae ily I promise) BUT THIS B O Y. Ten is seriously one of the most amazing dancers I’ve ever seen. He dances with such passion, and beauty! It’s so incredible to me how he can portray his emotions with dance movements so well. I could literally write an entire ESSAY on how much I love Ten’s dancing but I don’t think any of us want me to do that so I’ll end this here.
8. Between 3 and 5: Who would you most likely marry?
JUNG JAEHYUN! (I love you Kihyun i’m soRRY) Ok but guys Jaehyun IS a husband, like I’ve never seen anyone more husband material than him. I’ve always seen Jaehyun as a very typical sweet romantic boyfriend kind of guy (which is exactly my kind of guy) and I would even go as far to say he’s my ideal type (I also say that about Yugyeom even tho they’re different, whatever!)
9. Between 1 and 7: Who would you nurse when they are sick?
I know every question that has Yugyeom as an option I’ve chosen him, but listen this boy NEEDS nursing when he’s sick! He’s already wild as it is, imagine him while sick?!? This poor baby would be so whiny, and just want so many cuddles, and to watch Disney movies, and just snuggle until all of the pain goes away. (I L O V E YUGYEOM I’M SO EMO)
10. Between 2 and 3: Who has a better smile?
I’M SO DONE WITH THESE QUESTIONS I CAN’T ANSWER THIS I’m seriously being asked to chose between two of my ults for the best smile i cannot
11) Between 6 and 8: Who would you go on vacation with?
hmmmm I’m gonna say Jaebum here. I feel like Jaebum and I would get along well on vacation bc we both would just wanna chill out the whole time and relax while Baekhyun would be a bit hyper (I love him for that tho)
OK THAT WAS EXTREMELY DIFFICULT AND PAINFUL
Tagging: Suffer friends! (im jk ily all only do it if you wanna!) @hellohaechan @hyucksrose @cuteyongs @dest-writes (pls ignore if you already did this btw!)
#bias questions tag#THIS WAS SO HARD#i was sufferingfjllgsdk#ily all my bbys i promise#even tho there was a teensy weensy bit of favoritism for my ults#especially yug#i tried to make if as fair as my heart could possibly take!#but two of them i genuinely could not chose i'm SORRY#nct#got7#bts#exo#monsta x

Afrodite #24: homeward bound
A música captura a essência do sentimento de pertencimento com maestria: “Every inch of me is trembling But not from the cold Something is familiar Like a dream I can reach but not quite hold I can sense you there Like a friend I've always known I'm arriving And it feels like I am home”
“Show yourself I'm dying to meet you Show yourself It's your turn Are you the one I've been looking for All of my life? Show yourself I'm ready to learn
[...]
I have always been so different Normal rules did not apply Is this the day? Are you the way I finally find out why? ”
E a busca é algo eterno.
“Show yourself I'm no longer trembling Here I am I've come so far You are the answer I've waited for All of my life Oh, show yourself Let me see who you are”
“Where the northwind meets the sea Ah ah ah ah There's a river Ah ah ah ah Full of memory Come my darling, homeward bound I am found!
Show yourself Step into your power Grow yourself Into something new You are the one you've been waiting for All of my life”
Elsa, ao ouvir o chamado da mãe, responde “I am found!”, “fui encontrada”.
Me vejo hoje nova. Porto Alegre. 14 de maio de 2020

Introduction
The quest to understand how great bacon is made takes me around the world and through epic adventures. I tell the story by changing the setting from the 2000s to the late 1800s when much of the technology behind bacon curing was unraveled. I weave into the mix beautiful stories of Cape Town and use mostly my family as the other characters besides me and Oscar and Uncle Jeppe from Denmark, a good friend and someone to whom I owe much gratitude! A man who knows bacon! Most other characters have a real basis in history and I describe actual events and personal experiences set in a different historical context.
The cast I use to mold the story into is letters I wrote home during my travels.

Mild Cured bacon, March 1891
Dear Minette,
It is Sunday. I arrived in the small town with Andreas and his dad on Friday. They planned for us to go away for the weekend for some time. Since we got here I wanted to write, but have been unable. My mind was numb ever since Friday morning. I learned exactly what I set out for when I left Cape Town. I have been dreaming about what I would do if I discover the secret of the mass production of good quality bacon. That I would write to Oscar, Will, and James first. Possibly to Dawie Hyman or David de Villiers Graaff, to Uncle Jakobus and my dad.
I sit by the window in my very small hotel room looking out onto the main street of the beautiful town. I am suddenly very tired. For the first time in years, I am able to exhale. It is strange that now that the main reason behind my quest has been resolved that the overarching thought in my mind is not our imminent success in South Africa, or bacon curing or science but it is you. (1)
You are pure and volcanic. You contain in your being the tempests that lash the great Cape land. The spirit of every wild animal and bird who makes the Table Mountain range their dwelling is in you. You are the arch mother of every ancient inhabitant of this land. The peoples who lived here even before the Khoe of the San moved down. This position you hold not by birth but by decree of the Ancients! Suddenly I think of us and the beauty of being with you and sharing the bounty of whatever this great land has to offer. The quest I am on is meaningful only because I can share it with you and the fact that life was good to me and allowed me to discover the truth behind exceptional bacon at my first port is magnificent. You are the first person I share this with. This is not my quest but ours; nor is it my triumph! It is ours! Like you, it is grace!
The Industrialisation of Bacon
On Friday morning, Uncle Jeppe called me to his office. It was only the two of us. “Eben”, he said, “its time we have a talk. I have a story to tell you. I know why you are here and will tell you what you are looking for.” Since I started with him he rotated me between his different departments. I did deboning to learn the different cuts. I did meat trimming. The departments that I liked most was brine preparation, pickling, and smoking.
I walked up the stairs in the very industrial looking building. In his office, I settled in the chair in front of his large dest. He sat forward in his chair and folded his hands in front of him. He spoke with a heavy Danish accent. “You will find very few places on earth who cure their bacon the way we do in this factory. Ya, in Denmark you will, but in no other land. How you ended up coming here, yes, of course, that is a miracle. You could not have known what I am about to tell you. Few people know. You came here because your ancestors hail from Denmark and the spice trader in Johannesburg talked you into it. You told me you and Oscar met him purely by accident! Of course, this is most amazing!” “There is one other place where they cure bacon like this. In Ireland. The reason for this is very simple. The invention is Irish! They industrialized the process!”
“All right, here the information is a bit sketchy but I believe the man responsible for the invention was a proficient chemist, William Oake. For sure it is reported that he was from Ulster in Northern Ireland. I was told by friends that mention of mild cured bacon, as it was called, appeared from Antrim, Northern Ireland as far back as 1837. He probably hails from a place not far from there.”

Oake industrialised bacon curing and he did so magnificently! It is, according to Uncle Jeppe, exactly the system developed by Oake sometime before 1837 which we follow in his factory. The carcass is put on the factory floor which must be made from concrete. We lightly sprinkle it with saltpeter so that any leftover blood is drawn from the meat. We then put the meat in curing tanks. The bottom of the tank is sprinkled with salt. We call the sides of pork, flitches. One row of flitches is stacked on the bottom. We lightly sprinkle saltpeter over them with sugar and salt. The next layer of flitches is stacked on top of the first but done crosswise. This is again sprinkled exactly as was done with the first and so it is repeated till the tank is full.
Lastly, a lid is placed inside the tank with an upright on top and pickle is poured into the tank. The lid and upright serve the purpose of keeping the bacon sides submerged. The pickle is made as follows: To every 1Olbs. of salt we add 8lbs. of dark-brown sugar; 1 lib. of spice, and 1/2lb. of sal-prunella.” Sal prunella a mixture of refined nitre and soda. Nitre, is refined saltpeter used in the manufacturing of explosives. We make the mix strong enough to float an egg; we let it settle a bit and then skim any impurities off before we pour it into the tank. (3) This means that saltpeter plays a very important role as does the grade of saltpeter.
It is important to turn the meat over after forty-eight hours into another tank. The meat that was on top is placed at the bottom of the next tank. Salt, sugar, and saltpeter are again used exactly as it was done during the first salting. Now the real trick comes in. The same pickle is used! After seven days it is removed and stacked on the floor putting some salt between each layer. We are careful not to stack it higher than four sides deep, until it has been on the floor for some days when it should be turned over, and stacked higher each time until the fourth week from the day it went into the tanks; the bacon will then be cured.
We then place the bacon in tanks of cold water. Here it is soaked overnight. The next morning we wash them well with a brush and hang to dry. When it is properly dried, we trim it and hang for smoking. (3) Oake’s invention is probably the the stepwise process of repeated light salting which starts as soon as the pig is slaughtered, the use of specially designed tanks, his insistence on a good factory floor, his scientific description of the preservation process, incorporating the steps of the turning of the meat, which was not being done with barrel pork, and the final soaking in cold water. The last important step in his process is incorporating the re-use of the old brine.”
Uncle Jeppe believes that Oake’s genius was to pull various technologies together that has been developed in various parts of the world over many years and develop a coherent system. He eliminated weaknesses and exploited strengths. He told me that “when I started looking into the different aspects of curing that is united in Oake’s invention, I wondered what exactly did Oake invent? It is possible that the entire process of handling the animal from killing to actual bacon is his claim to fame and not any one particular part of the invention. As is so often with great inventors, they often take information which is out there and combines it in new and useful ways. This may be the exact legacy of Oake. He thought through the entire process, packaged it, named it and then advocated it. To the Irish belongs the credit for this!”
“Friends of mine,” Uncle Jeppe said to prove his point “suggested similar techniques on the re-use of brine to me as far back as 1830. They wrote that the brine mix must be boiled over a gentle fire for the impurities to rise to the top before these were skimmed off and the brine allowed to cool down. They reported that such brine is re-used “with advantage”. Before it is re-used, the old brine must be boiled first and water and the other ingredients must be added proportionately. This may actually be a report on the process invented by Oake which may take the invention by Oake back to 1830.”
Like a good lawyer, Uncle Jeppe presented his next set of evidence, acknowledging that his first argument may not be that strong since the actual invention by Oake may be what was described by his friends. He pulled a document from his bottom drawer. “Here we have a report on the production of barrel pork which comes to us from 1776. He read from it carefully and slowly, as if he saw it for the first time and did not want to miss a point. “After the meat has cooled,” probably after the hair was removed, “it is cut into 5 lb. pieces which are then rubbed well with fine salt. The pieces are then placed between boards a weight brought to bear upon the upper board so as to squeeze out the blood. Afterward, the pieces are shaken to remove the surplus salt, [and] packed rather tightly in a barrel, which when full is closed. A hole is then drilled into the upper end and brine allowed to fill the barrel at the top, the brine being made of 4 lb. of salt (1.8kg or 10%), 2 lb. of brown sugar (0.9kg or 5%), and 4 gallons of water (15L or 84%) with a touch of salt-petre. When no more brine can enter, the hole is closed. The method of preserving meat not only assures that it keeps longer but also gives it a rather good taste.” (2)
Uncle Jeppe placed the paper on his desk and folded his hands again. “How closely does this describe what we do in our factory and the mild cure process of William Oake!” “Almost a 100 years later, in our time, pressure pumps were introduced to inject the brine into the meat through needles. A plank would be run across the barrel opening. The meat is placed on the plank for injection with between one and three needles. The three needles are fed brine through a hand pump that would pump brine directly from the barrel. The barrel is half filled with brine. After the meat has been injected, it is pushed off the plank, to fall into the brine which acts as a cover brine. It would remain in the cover brine the prescribed time before it is removed and smoked.”
The Danes are an impressive nation with a thoroughness about them which is remarkable. I am amazed at Uncle Jeppe’s knowledge of the art. He has friends all over the world who correspond with him regularly so that he is constantly learning. It is very impressive and I am honoured to know him!
As I sit here, writing, as tired as I am, I see him sitting in front of me. I want to write as much as I can today lest I forget something. The next element Oake improved on was the actual place where the curing is done. Instead of wood, Oake designed special curing tanks and moving away from barrels with its obvious drawback of using wood to cure bacon in and the accompanying problem of insects that inhabit the wood. The next major improvement was in the design of the actual brine. The most interesting aspect of his cure is his use of sal prunella. He used a very pure form of saltpeter. Not the kind that is used as fertilizer, but the kind that is used to make black powder. The Irish were, at the time of Oake’s invention, actively experimenting with preservatives in their medical universities. Uncle Jeppe said that he “believes the invention was in part done, because of knowledge they developed on how to preserve human bodies for the purpose of gaining medical knowledge or training physicians. Oake was probably trained by men, proficient in the morbid arts.”
“Apart from the use of sal prunella, Oak used a position proposed by none other than Liebig that the preserving power of salt was not due to the chemistry of salt or some secret power contained in it but due to the fact that it drew out the moisture from meat. Oake explains that it was believed that salt drew out the albumen from the meat and it is when water comes into contact with the albumen that putrefaction sets in. The essence of the invention, according to him, is that the meat is cured while the albumen remains in the meat and does not taste as salty as dry cured bacon. (2)
Uncle Jeppes conclusion is that “Oake’s invention rests, then, on the stepwise process, the use of specially designed tanks and his scientific description of the preservation process which was made possible by his training as a chemist. This gave his system instant credibility because he was able to describe it in the scientific language of our time.”
The thing about the pickle
The re-use of the brine is absolutely mesmerisingly interesting! Some of the men working with me on the floor call it the mother brine. Andreas’ mom tells me that the exact same thing happens when she makes sourdough bread. They keep a small piece of dough which they constantly feed and re-use. They call it the mother dough. In some household, there are doughs of which the age is measured in generations. In the same way, the bacon or ham brine is reused for many years. The older the brine, the better! When it becomes a bit muddy, all you do is to boil it and leave it to cool down. Let any sediment sink to the bottom and scoop the clear brine off after you removed any impurities that may have floated to the surface. (5)
Smoking Bacon and Hams
After the bacon has been cured, it is smoked. I have spent two weeks in the smoking department. The most important point I learned is to have the smoke as cool as possible before coming into contact with the bacon. This is the reason why the bacon or hams should hang as high as possible from the fire below. The floor should be 6ft. 6in. or 7ft. from the ground with only a slight opening between the flooring boards to allow the smoke to make its way up to where the bacon is hung.
The flitches or hams should be hung as close together as possible, but should never touch. This will allow the smoke to penetrate from every side. The men who work in the department try and teach me as much as possible so that when I get back to Cape Town, I can build a perfect smokehouse. They tell me that a small slide can be put in the gable of the smokehouse to regulate the smoke as required. A place should be made in the center of the floor, say 6ft. by 3ft., where the sawdust is placed. This is lighted, and if the door is kept closed there will be no flame, but the sawdust will smoulder and cause a great quantity of smoke. From twenty-four to forty-eight hours will suffice to properly smoke the bacon if the weather is suitable, after which it may be packed and forwarded to market. Where teatree (Melaleuca) is obtainable it is excellent for smoking; it imparts a flavor to the bacon which is much appreciated by many people. (6)
Benefits
The new system that Oake developed is much cheaper than dry curing and the bacon is soft and not nearly as salty as dry cured bacon. The bacon lasts a lot longer in any climate compared to dry cured bacon. The downside of the entire undertaking is the huge capital input that is needed to build such a factory. Uncle Jeppe told me that I should not be overly worried about this because the Danes has, in his opinion, devised the most perfect way of overcoming this hurdle.
This is exactly what I was hoping to learn from the Harris operations in Calne. I don’t even know if they use this exact system, nor do I care right now. The system is fast, cheap and the results are spectacular. My dad would approve of the quality and this is really all I need. It is a perfect model to follow back home. What I have been learning in Denmark is unique. I thought this is how all Europe is doing it. The uniqueness of the system blows my mind.
How did it get to Denmark?
Uncle Jeppe sat back in his chair and wiped his one hand over his face. “Now young man, he continued, how did it happen that this perfect system of bacon production ended up in Denmark before almost any other nation on earth even heard of it?” As if he really ponders the point he gets up and looks out of the window onto a lush green garden below from his second story office. He has a conversation with himself. “A very good question! Indeed, a very good question!”
“The year was 1880,” he began answering himself. “Denmark is a tiny nation. To remain competitive, we realised many years ago that we have to learn as much as we can from other nations and peoples and adapt. Every industry is constantly looking where new discoveries have been made and how we can adapt. This is very Danish.”
“Nine years ago, this factory did not exist nor did we know how to make industrial bacon. We were large dairy farmers and a sizable pork industry developed from the by-products of dairy farming. it was very simple and profitable. Raise pigs on the by-products from milk and sell it to England and Germany. Someone from the pork industry learned about the new mild cured bacon produced in Ireland. We tried many times to sent people to learn the techniques, but the Irish were careful not to employ the young Danish men we sent over for employment in their large bacon plants. The thing about Ireland is that the workers often go on strike and how they are treated by the companies they work for is often very harsh. Those on strike do not get paid and stand a large chance to be laid off.”
“In 1880 there was a strike among butchers in the Irish town of Waterford. Some shrewd members of the Danish pork processing guild happened to be in Ireland at that time, in Waterford and at the promise of lucrative employment in Denmark managed to persuade a number of the striking men to return with them to Denmark. In Denmark, we quickly arranged for them to train our butchers. It was at such a training seminar where I learned the art.”
Uncle Jeppe learned the art of curing bacon the Irish way from these Irish butchers and so did many other Danish butchers. I am exhausted. This is not the end of Uncle Jeppe’s Friday revelation to me. How and why the Danish people overnight became the largest curers of bacon on earth is the second installment of this great story. It is important, particularly to us in South Africa because it gives a model for our bacon curing company. It is the secret of how we will be able to raise the cash needed to put a factory up to accommodate this exact system. It is no less important than what I just described. In not a single point. Nor is it less interesting. The story will keep you riveted like a good novel, but my mind is shutting off. I need rest and will continue tomorrow. My mind is still racing but I am so exhausted that tiredness is taking over. I will now sleep well! After you read my letters, please show them to my mom and dad and please mail them on to Oscar. How I wish that you were here with me today! Off all the days since I am gone, I miss you more than ever tonight!
Much love!
Eben

Note 1: The actual event was when I visited an English town with Jeppe. I was sitting at the window looking out on the main town square, writing an email to the kids. I very homesick and felt that I have achieved my goal being in Egland.
Note 2: The exact quote about the system invented by Oake is, “He discovered that the antiseptic properties of salt were to be found apart from chloride of sodium (salt), and that the obnoxious effects of dissolving the albumen in the curing process could, therefore, be avoided. This is supposed to be the key to the new system of curing. By the new process of treatment, it is said that the bacon and hams, although thoroughly cured with the very essence of salt, still retain all the albumen originally in the meat, and yet do not taste salty to the palate.” (Molineux, 1898)
Note 3: “As the carcasses are cut up the portions are laid on the floor of the factory (which should be made of concrete or flagged), flesh uppermost, and lightly powdered over with saltpetre, so as to drain off any blood. It can then be placed in the tanks for salting in the following manner: — Sprinkle the bottom of the tank with salt, then put in a layer of sides or flitches, sprinkle saltpetre over them lightly, and then salt and sugar. The next layer of sides or flitches is put in crosswise, and served in the same way, and so on until the tank is full. Then place a lid to fit inside the tank (inch battens 3in. apart will do) ; fix an upright on top of the lid to keep the bacon from rising when putting in the pickle. The pickle to be made as follows : — To every 1Olbs. of salt add 8lbs. of dark-brown sugar, lib. of spice, and 1/2lb. of sal-prunella. Make it strong enough to float an egg ; let it settle for some time, then skim, and it is ready to go on to the meat.” (Molineux, 1898)
Explanatory note by Eben: Note Sal-Prunella is, according to Errors of Speech or Spelling by E. Cobham Brewer, Vol II, published by William Tegg and Co, London, 1877, a mixture of refined nitre and soda. Nitre, as used at this time was refined saltpeter used in the manufacturing of explosives.
Note 4: “At the end of forty-eight hours turn the meat over into another tank, taking care to put the sides that were on top in the bottom of next tank, treating it as regards saltpetre, salt, and sugar exactly the same as at first, and using the same pickle. It can then remain until the seventh day from when first put in. It can then be taken out, and stacked on the floor of the factory, putting some salt between each layer, but do not stack higher than four sides deep, until it has been on the floor for some days, when it should be turned over, and stacked higher each time until the fourth week from the day it went into the tanks; the bacon will then be cured.
The bacon can then be placed in tanks containing cold water, and allowed to soak all night. Wash well with a brush, then hang up to dry, and when properly dry it can be trimmed and smoked.” (Molineux, 1898)
Note 5: “The same pickle can be used for many years — the older the better; it only requires, when it becomes somewhat muddy, to be boiled and clarified. I have seen pickle which had been used in one factory for sixteen years, and that factory produces some of the best bacon and hams in Australia.” (Molineux, 1898)
Note 6: “Smoking Bacon and Hams. The smokehouse should be built according to the intended output of bacon and hams, and the walls of the building should not be less than 12ft. high. One of the principal things in smoking bacon is to have the smoke as cool as possible before coming into contact with the bacon, and to assist this it is well to put a floor 6ft. 6in. or 7ft. from the ground, just allowing a slight opening between the flooring boards to allow the smoke to make its way up to where the bacon is hung. The flitches or hams should be hung as close together as not to touch, so as to allow the smoke to penetrate every portion. A small slide can be put in the gable of the smokehouse to regulate the smoke as required. A place should be made in the centre of the floor, say 6ft. by 3ft., where the sawdust is placed. This is lighted, and if the door is kept closed there will be no flame, but the sawdust will smoulder and cause a great quantity of smoke. From twenty-four to forty-eight hours will suffice to properly smoke the bacon if the weather is suitable, after which it may be packed and forwarded to market.
Where teatree (Melaleuca) is obtainable it is excellent for smoking ; it imparts a flavor to the bacon which is much appreciated by many people.” (Molineux, 1898)
Note 7: “Mild-cure Bacon. — In all of the large cities of Britain and the European continent, the public demand is for mild-cure bacon. The system of cure is very simple and perfect, but requires expenditure of at least £1,000 on the plant for carrying it out. By this process the albumen of the meat is retained and is not coagulated, so that the bacon is devoid of excessive salt, is by no means hard or dry, and there is no loss of weight in the curing. A factory costing £2,000 to construct could easily cure 400 pigs per day. The process takes about a month to complete, but after the first day there is no further labor involved.” (Molineux, 1898)

400 Lux: MGG pt. 2
here’s part two!! little late (and short) but there’s more to come!
Warnings: none
___
A few minutes later, I receive word that Matthew has returned. I gather my things and head for the door. The rain has started to pick up; a steady stream of water pounds the pavement as I run to his car. I struggle to open the passenger door, but eventually get into the now heated car. My hair, skin, and sweatshirt are covered with rain droplets.
I can feel Matthew looking over at me, “Are you ready?” “Yes.”
now we wear long sleeves, and the heating comes on.
The two of us are now driving down the highway, singing along to Journey. Matthew got a strange assortment of food and beverages from the gas station, but we consume them nonetheless as we drive aimlessly. Nothing is on our minds except for where we are in the moment we are in it.
you buy me orange juice.
He has one hand on the wheel and the other rests on the gear shift. I have my sneaker-clad feed propped up on the dash. I place my hand over his on the gear shift, and he laces our fingers together and squeezes gently; a silent ‘I love you.’
I breathe deeply, savoring the moment that we are in. “Where do they think you are?” Matthew asks. “Visiting a friend in San Diego,” I tell him through a smile. Just then, we see a green sign above the road stating that the next exit would be for San Diego. “We could at least make the lie half true,” he suggests. “Go for it.”
we’re getting good at this. dreams of clean teeth.
The sun has started to set as we make our way into the city. Skyscrapers rise from the earth like trees and lights shine like stars in the sky that is growing ever so darker. I start looking for lodging signs so that we can settle somewhere. We’ve been in the car for a few hours, and are starting to get restless.
“There’s a Super 8 in four miles,” I inform Matthew. “Sounds good,” he replies, his voice heavy.
He pulls into the hotel. There are a few cars parked, but not many.
“I’ll go into the office and get a room,” I say. “Alright, but take my card,” Matthew pulls out his wallet and hands me a credit card. I open the door and step out of the car, then I start to make my way over to the front lobby area. As I wait for the people at the front dest to find a room, I look back over my shoulder and see his car parked in a spot just outside the doors of the office. I smile as the man at the desk hands me two keys for a room, and I exit the office and return to Matthew.
i can tell that you’re tired, but you keep the car on while you’re waiting out front.
Matthew and I find our room on the other side of the property. We collect our limited baggage and enter the room, having no expectations. The room is nothing special; there’s one bed in the center of the room, a bathroom, and a desk in the corner.
“Not bad for an improvised weekend,” he says optimistically.
I place my backpack on the floor next to the bed and go to the other end of the room to open the curtains and let natural light into the stuffy room. To my surprise, the window is actually a balcony. I pull open the sliding door and step outside into the humid evening air.
you pick me up and take me home again, head out the window again,
I can’t help but feel euphoric looking out at the different city. All of the stress from the week seems to melt off and a weight is lifted off of my shoulders. We have nothing to do, nothing to prove, and only time to do whatever we want with.
we’re hollow like the bottles that we drain.
I’m snapped out of my day-dream when I feel two arms snake around my waist. Knowing that it’s Matthew, I relax into the embrace.
“It’s beautiful, isn’t it?” he states more than asks as he rests his chin on the top of my head. “Sure is,” I breathe.
We stand in silence for a few moments, savoring each other’s presence. This is a rare moment for us since we can’t really be together like this much. He has work, I’m drowning in work, and if we are in the same room as each other we are ‘just friends’. I’ve been craving his touch all week, and now that I have it, I feel intoxicated.
you drape your wrists over the steering wheel, pulses can drive from here.
“You know we’re crazy, right?” Matthew asks, breaking the silence. I turn my body around to face him and place my hands on his biceps, “Yea, I know.”
My hands slowly make their way up his torso and my arms wrap around his neck. His eyes reflect the picture of the city behind me, and I get lost in them every time I dare to look. The sounds of the city grow quieter the longer we stare at each other. The world melts away until it is just Matthew and I and the ground we stand on. Right now, he is all I want.
we might be hollow but we’re brave,
Matthew’s eyes flicker down to my lips for a split second. I soon follow with the same action, silently giving him permission. The space between us closes and our lips meet in a flutter of emotion and longing.
and i like you.

Vance Joy - “Nation of Two”
O segundo álbum do australiano Vance Joy, de 30 anos, chega para seguir os passos de sua bem sucedida estreia em “Dream Your Life Away” de 2014, que trouxe o hit “Riptide”, ouvido em 10/10 baladinhas indies (scroll down for the english version).
Neste “Nation of Two”, de apenas 45 minutos de duração, lançado em fevereiro de 2018, trazendo como primeiro single a música “Lay It On Me”, Vance aborda, como o próprio nome indica relacionamentos, como veremos na análise faixa por faixa, track by track, nesse texto de estreia do “Track by Grass People”.
1. Call If You Need Me
Na faixa de abertura de seu álbum, Vance Joy resolve abrir as portas do seu coração e escancarar pra gente relacionamento sério em que o protagonista, claramente um homem apaixonado, Brasil (I love you in the morning when the blood runs to your cheeks / Babe, you are the first thing and the last thing that I'd see), que demonstra confiança em seu amor, tomando cuidado em não prender a pessoa, já que não existe qualquer tipo de relação saudável se um dos dois sufocar e impedir que o outro simplesmente seja, daí a gente vê no trecho:
“You can run and hide, babe
Like a bird you can take flight
If I've been holding on too tight
If I've been holding on”
Your mother always told us we should go out to the dance / You can't get struck by lightning if you're not standing in the rain).
“You were in the shower we were talking through the glass
Packing up your suitcase, you were humming to yourself
One day you were smiling
I could tell by how you sounded on the phone
2. Lay It On Me
“Let me in Everything starts at your skin, so new Your love's always finding me out Who am I kidding? If all my defences come down, oh baby Will you lay it all on me now? Lay it all on me now”
I found you hidden in plain sight, why'd I take so long?).
3. We're Going Home
<iframe src="https://giphy.com/embed/E2d2tsgz7iHo4" width="480" height="360" frameBorder="0" class="giphy-embed" allowFullScreen></iframe><p><a href="https://giphy.com/gifs/rain-depressed-joey-E2d2tsgz7iHo4">via GIPHY</a></p>
“We're going home If we make it or we don't, we won't be alone When I see your light shine, I know I'm home If you're waiting all your life, you won't ever go When I see your light shine, I know I'm home”
You go, girl.
“Some things are simple and hard to ignore They say, hmm, the truth is like that We're getting colder, so far from the shore I say, hmm, the world is like that”
4. Saturday Sun
“Ba-ba, ba-ba Ba-ba, ba-b-ba-ba”
5. Take Your Time
O rapaz está apaixonado, esperando para que a pessoa amada o procure, o desvende (I'll let you figure me out / Tear all my fences down).
Menino Vance gosta das coisas simples da vida, aqui de novo ele mostra seu interesse pelo cotidiano, pelo dia-a-dia da relação (We'll go dancing in the kitchen / You fall in my arms) e que está ali pelo que a pessoa realmente é, mesmo que ela ainda não tenha notado (This kind of beauty ain't ordinary / You look, but do you really see?).
Mais uma vez, ele fala do inesperado (I'll admit I never saw you coming / Now I see your colors running) e, inesperadamente (HA), nessa música ele transmite uma agitação e ansiedade até então inéditas quando comparada com as anteriores, se liga nos trechos:
“There's an ocean inside my head
Waves that don't ever rest”
“Baby won't you let your phone keep ringing
Are you thinking what I'm thinking?
Won't you take your time on me?”
6. I'm With You
SOS. MORTA. SOCORRO. ICB.
“I saw you standing there Sandy blonde hair, the way it came tumbling down Just like a waterfall And if you need a light I'll be the match to your candle My darling, I'm ready, to burst into flames for you”
“Well I've been on fire, dreaming of you Tell me you don't It feels like you do Looking like that, you'll open some wounds How does it start? And when does it end? Only been here for a moment, but I know I want you But is it too soon? To know that I'm with you There's nothing I can do”
“And sometime around one
We fell asleep to escape from the sun
And we woke up to the sound of a storm outside
We stood at your front door
You looked at me and said "Baby, this rain changes everything"
And my heart ran away from me”
7. Like Gold
“Time to let it go
It won't let go of me
Hanging by a thread
Cutting the cord and then falling back into the
Black 'cause if I don't
If I wait 'til it feels right
I'll be waiting my whole life
Closing my eyes, remember how we were like”
“Well, I got a feeling Darling, it's possible 'Cause love's got no ceiling Now, that it's just so strong And I got a feeling Like everything is possible I'm trying to change”
8. Alone With Me
“Here I am, saying things to you
I never thought that I'd I would say outside my head
Oh, and here we are
I'm doing things with you I never thought we'd do
I'm seeing into you”
“Everything's good
Everything's just as it should be
When you're alone with me
Everything's good
Everything's just as it should be
When we're alone”
“Oh, you're the shape of my days
Oh, you're my holy place
And I know”
Crashing Into You
“You were the one to visit my darkness
You were the brightest way”
“You dropped a stone into the well
We'd wait for the sound it made
When it got quiet, you could hear your heart
Tell me, what did it say?
I was a bird, you opened the cage
It felt like a clean white page” (QUE LINDO, BRASIL)
“You came along
You light up my days, my personal sun (MY. PERSONAL. SUN)
Showing me all the ways I could fall
You made me feel new
I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you
Baby, feel me crash
I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you
Baby, feel me crash”
QUEM NÃO QUER UM SOL PARTICULAR? QUEM CONCORDA RESPIRA.
10. One Of These Days
“The moment you stop looking
Wherever you go, you'll be in the right place
You'll never know the difference it makes
When you let go, and give up your chance
I'll come find you one of these days”
11. Little Boy
“We drove so slowly through these streets In the suburbs of our dreams At night my father closed his eyes He saw the new car in the drive My mother standing in the doorway Friday night, a smile on her face And the voice I can hear in my head”
“So we might as well say What's on our minds 'Cause there's no way to know When it's your time to go When it's your time to go There's no way to know”
Amo você, leitor/a.
13. Where We Start
E a faixa final desse álbum maravilhoso traz novamente a ideia da pessoa amada como porto seguro (You were my lover, you were my tree / You would always protect me), como aquele abrigo que tanto buscamos quando as coisas vão mal.
The second album by 30-year-old Australian Vance Joy arrives to follow in the footsteps of his successful debut in "Dream Your Life Away" from 2014, which featured the hit "Riptide", heard in 10/10 indie parties.
In this "Nation of Two", only 45 minutes long, released in February 2018, bringing the song "Lay It On Me" as its first single, Vance approaches, as the name itself indicates relationships, as we will see in the track by track analysis, in this debut text of "Track by Grass People".
1. Call If You Need Me
In the opening track of her album, Vance Joy decides to open the doors of her heart and open up for serious relationship people in which the protagonist, clearly a man in love, people! (I love you in the morning when the blood runs to your cheeks / Babe , you are the first thing and the last thing that I would see), which shows confidence in your love, being careful not to arrest the person, since there is no kind of healthy relationship if one of the two suffocates and prevent the other simply be, hence we see in the passage:
"You can run and hide, babe Like a bird you can take flight If I've been holding on too tight If I've been holding on "
At the same time, not allowing the relationship to enter a common place, to always keep refreshed in that feeling and more, risking being carried away without fear and thus letting good things happen. (Your mother always told us we should go out to the dance / You can not get struck by lightning if you're not standing in the rain). What we like in this song is the daily feeling and intimacy between the two characters, excerpts such as:
"You were in the shower and were talking through the glass Packing up your suitcase, you were humming yourself One day you were smiling I could tell by how you sounded on the phone Yes, I'm coming home, babe" (HONESTLY, is there anything more beautiful than this ??)
And the notion of returning home, his home translated into the figure of the loved one. CRY.
This is the kind of music to listen to when you miss the sweetheart, the quiet folk beat makes us relax and feel welcomed. It's like a hug (:
2. Lay It On Me
The second song already starts with a more upbeat, upbeat, very optimistic. Vance is a romantic and in this song he shows the idea of a new beginning, a new relationship, a new season and all the possibilities that come together (Snow comes down, everything is new and different). Again he demonstrates the will to let things happen, to believe in the unexpected and in what it can bring from experience to the person.
In the refrain the singer plays, asking the person to put everything in it, whether good or bad, wanting to enjoy it to the fullest, with everything it has to offer, showing that it can not deceive or disguise:
“Let me in Everything starts at your skin, so new Your love's always finding me out. Who am I kidding? If all my defenses come down, oh baby Will you lay it on me now? Lay it all on me now "
You can see that classic situation in which you find the love where you least expect it, with whom you least expect it, in the way you least expected it, it was just a matter of being open (I found you hidden in plain sight, why'd I take so long?)
3. We're Going Home
Here we can already see a pattern in the album proposal, since the character brings back the idea of home, home, when he is with the loved one and the idea of playing, believing in the possibilities that a relationship has to offer, good or bad, since everyone goes through this, does not it?
"We're going home. If we make it or not, we will not be alone. When I see your light shine, I know I'm home If you're waiting all your life, you will not ever go When I see your light shine, I know I'm home "
In the next verse, Joy resolves to criticize the cold and gray society we live by stating that people are moving away, when in reality their feeling is of approximation, of belonging, ever greater, going exactly against what the world he says. You go, girl.
"Some things are simple and hard to ignore They say, hmm, the truth is like that We're getting colder, so far from the shore I say, hmm, the world is like that "
4. Saturday Sun
This is the famous cute song, easy lyrics, chewing gum, light and lively beat. In this song Vance portrays a love of summer, fleeting, uncompromising. Again, we observe the idea of not letting any opportunity pass for fear of surrender. All experiences are valid and make us grow. And this is it.
"Ba-ba, ba-ba Ba-ba, ba-ba-ba "
5. Take Your Time
If in the previous track Vance was talking about a wedding, in this track he is again our favorite lover boy. The boy is in love, waiting for the loved person to look for him, to unravel him (I'll let you figure me out).
Boy Vance likes the simple things in life, here again he shows his interest in everyday life, in the day-to-day relationship (We'll go dancing in the kitchen). person really is, even though she has not yet noticed (This kind of beauty is not ordinary / You look, but do you really see?).
Once again, he speaks of the unexpected and unexpectedly (HA), in this song he conveys a hitherto unprecedented agitation and anxiety when compared to previous ones, is linked in the sections:
"There's an ocean inside my head Waves that do not ever rest "
"Baby will not you let your phone ringing Are you thinking what I'm thinking? Will not you take your time on me? "
6. I'm With You SOS. DEAD. HELP. ICB.
Behold, we came to half the album and with a little Vance Joy blows it down everybody. With a letter of pure appreciation and love, this little (he's 1.93 meters tall) prince manages to put into a song feelings that we would all like to feel and share without fear.
This is one of those declarations of love to send to the boy and in this to win even more the beloved. It's hard to talk about this song, just take a look at this POETRY:
“I saw you standing there Sandy blonde hair, the way she came tumbling down Just like a waterfall And if you need a light I'll be the match to your candle My darling, I'm ready, to burst into flames for you "
Here the lover makes a comparison of the hair of the beloved to a waterfall, if it is arranged to be the match for his candle and to combust by his love. Please, right, everybody cries.
"Well I've been on fire, dreaming of you Tell me you do not It feels like you do Looking like that, you'll open some wounds How does it start? And when does it end? I've been here for a moment, but I know I want you. But it's too soon? I know that I'm with you There's nothing I can do "
In the chorus he continues to distribute kicks of emotion, but at this moment we perceive his insecurity in relation to another person not feeling the same way that he, in the same tune, who never? This fragility, this fear is what makes it even easier to identify and relate to the song.
"And sometime around one We fell asleep to escape from the sun And we woke up to the sound of a storm outside We stood at your front door You looked at me and said "Baby, this rain changes everything" And my heart ran away from me "
This stretch is beautiful. Sit down. Here the interpretation margin is very large and varies according to the time of each and every one. We grass people believe that metaphorically portrays the passage of this relationship, illustrating a change in those feelings of the couple, the "storm" that makes everything change and leaves the protagonist without ground, desolate.
We do not know what to say anymore, just to feel.
7. Like Gold
After punching him in the face, Vance comes with the song that can be titled "hi, gone". Here we see a relationship that is over, but the boy still thinks fondly about everything that has happened and nurtures a hope that maybe things can return, have one more chance.
"Time to let it go It will not let go of me Hanging by a thread Cutting the cord and then falling back into the Black 'cause if I do not If I wait 'til it feels right I'll be waiting my whole life Closing my eyes, remember how we were like "
"Well, I got a feeling Darling it's possible 'Cause love's got no ceiling Now, that's just so strong And I got a feeling Everything is possible I'm trying to change "
In this, we have an instrumental vibe very close to the track No. 4 ("Saturday Sun"), with an easy, catchy, and light-hearted refrain, so as not to let the climate of the term overpower the hope of returning. Even in bad, Vance continues good vibes.
8. Alone With Me
This is to send to your crush. It's to declare for good. Little Joy brings a slower, more boring beat, to make love and lie down in a shell.
The recurrent theme of trust, and of the person as safe place, house, home, refuge and warmth, special place and belonging return with force in this song, as we see in the passages below:
"Here I am, saying things to you I never thought I would say Oh, and here we are I'm doing things with you I never thought we'd do I'm seeing into you "
"Everything's good Everything's just as it should be When you're alone with me Everything's good Everything's just as it should be When we're alone "
"Oh, you're the shape of my days Oh, you're my holy place. And I know "
The protagonist here opens completely to another love, allowing itself new experiences that perhaps would not have, emphasizing how relationships always end up adding something, shaping you in some way and what is worth is the journey, not the destination (Clarice Lispector, 2022 ).
9. Crashing Into You
Behold, again Vance comes to make us suffer some more. What a beautiful letter. One more song to declare love. This time, the musician brings a more instrumental footprint, valuing his guitar and the band. Now, sit down and prepare yourself for these words:
"You were the one to visit my darkness You were the brightest way "
Honestly, right? Vance exposes himself, showing his vulnerability and the bad moment he was feeling, until a person arrives and illuminates a path he could not see, nor know that he existed.
“You dropped a stone into the well We would wait for the sound it made When it got quiet, you could hear your heart Tell me, what did you say? I was a bird, you opened the cage It felt like a clean white page " (WHAT A CUTE, BRAZIL)
“You came along You light up my days, my personal sun. Showing me all the ways I could fail You made me feel new I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you Baby, feel me crash I'm crashing, I'm crashing right into you Baby, feel me crash "
WHO DOES NOT WANT A PARTICULAR SUN? WHO AGREES BREATHE. The idea of being so devoted to a person, that it enlightens your life, renews you, shows you the various ways you can fall in love is ________. It's those little words that can put Vance Joy on a level above.
10. One Of These Days
Who has never found the right person at the wrong time or the wrong person at the right time?
Maintaining the album's optimism, Vance portrays a passion that was not to happen at that moment, despite all the potential that existed there and tries to guide and encourage the person, whatever way she chooses, even if it distances them.
When he says that a person should seek knowledge of himself, his ways, his answers, he again stresses the issue of the freedom of individuals, not to arrest someone for the simple fact of loving it and, if it is to be so , will meet one of these days. Things happen the moment they have to happen, it is no use insisting, searching or being frustrated.
"The moment you stop looking Wherever you go, you'll be in the right place You'll never know the difference it makes When you let go and give up your chance I'll come and find you one of these days "
11. Little Boy
Probably the most unsettling song of the album's theme, Vance Joy tells of a childhood cause, a fall of a bicycle where, from this, will appreciate the small things, the small moments of the daily life, something already portrayed previously, however here valuing the smile of the mother, the words of the father and the comfort of his family.
"We drove so slowly through these streets In the suburbs of our dreams At night my father closed his eyes I saw the new car in the drive My mother standing in the doorway Friday night, a smile on her face And the voice I can hear in my head "
We can also notice the more root instrumental, rustic, with a folk footprint, differing from the rest of the album.
12. Bonnie & Clyde
So Vance Joy is watching "Bonnie & Clyde" with crush, feeling guilty about spending a sunny day in the movies, at that time he decides to pick up his notepad and write that song when the couple dies (spoiler alert ) he realizes that in a relationship, it is better to talk what you think, not hide things, say I love you, yes, because you will never know the time to leave.
"So we might as well say What's our minds? 'Cause there's no way to know When is your time to go When is your time to go There's no way to know "
I love you, reader.
13. Where We Start
And the final track of this wonderful album brings back the idea of the beloved person as a safe haven, like that shelter we're looking for when things go wrong.
And the value of small things, Vance is a humble boy, he likes to appreciate and make us think of taking these little moments and remember them, not letting them go unnoticed, after all, let's live everything there is to live, let's allow ourselves (SANTOS, Lulu).
"Nation of Two" is an album that makes us appreciate the small and important things of life, attention to the details of daily life, the search for a safe harbor, a home, a love. To value our passions, our relationships and all that they have to offer us, to grow and mature us and, above all, not to be afraid of the new, of the unexpected. PLAY.
The shape of the grass:
Here, we will do a scale of differentiated punctuation. If we like the album, it will receive the quote "low grass", the one that is perfect to lie down and listen to your music. Otherwise, the quote is "tall grass", watch out for the snakes and insects that hide in it.
Music with the lowest grass: I'm With You (could not be different). Music with the Highest Grass: Bonnie & Clyde
So people-grass all over the Nation, Vance Joy's back yard is with: LOW GRASS <3

INTERVIEW WITH THE AUTHOR
What initially got you interested in writing?
I remember reading A Modest Proposal by Jonathan Swift during my sophomore year in high school and being blown away by the balls it took to write and publish something like that. I’ve always had a bit of a rebellious streak and the satire of that piece resonated with me.
Writing became a bigger part of my life during my sophomore year in college. I was a bit lost and unsure about what I wanted to do with my life, so I started writing a ton of poetry and songs. I’ve always found that form to be the most honest medium of my own expression, and I’ve written hundreds of poems and songs since that time.
What genres do you prefer to write in?
I think the genre is less important than the themes I prefer to talk about. My first novel, Moral Panic, is part science fiction, part social criticism, part political fiction, part alternate future, part cyber crime thriller, but what it’s really about is the internal struggle of the main character to find the proper usage of the systems he’s surrounded by.
He struggles with the fear of succumbing to the temptations of power and violent domination and he has to outwit his enemies to use the pre-built systems against those who would use them for malicious purposes. So in a way, it’s a cautionary tale of some of the possible “innovations” coming out of the technological world.
Are there any authors you prefer to read and why?
A few years ago I read a bunch of Cormac McCarthy’s work and I really admire his style and his story selection. His descriptive power mirrors a bit of the monotonous day to day reality of life until he punctures that world with brutal scenes of violence. The violence is always short in comparison to the other parts of his books, and I think it’s a fascinating way of portraying the effects of the adrenaline brought about by those moments. As though his writing style mirrors the primal reaction of his characters.
How did you make the move into being a published author?
I’ve been working in film for a few years, making shorts and promotional videos for nonprofits and bands in Denver, so I originally thought about this project as a screenplay. However, I felt I needed to get this story out regardless of whether a production company was interested in turning it into a film, so I dove headfirst into it as a novel. The nice part about a novel is I have total creative control and I can explore the inner thoughts of my characters in a way that isn’t possible through filmmaking.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
I was always a daydreamer in school and writing is the opportunity for me to explore my imagination in a way I can share with other people. I find it fascinating to consider how I would react in the situations I’ve put my characters in, and it feels like a way to explore different psychological sides of life from the comfort of my office.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
I find writing description to be the most challenging. I’m far more interested in the minds and motivations of the characters than the world they inhabit.
Do you have any tips for writers who find themselves experiencing writer’s block?
Go back into the world and live. Maybe you’ve expressed all of the pieces of life you collected before you were writing and you need to find some new experiences to come to a larger awareness of the world.
What advice would you give to people that want to enter the field?
If you’re serious, get to a place where you can accept criticism of your work without feeling that it is an assault on the very essence of your being. That takes personal maturity, which some people aren’t capable of, but creating some distance between yourself and the work is important. It allows you to accept constructive criticism that is crucial to making your work better.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
I want people to learn something about life. I want them to take away one or two interesting ideas that reveal a piece of the world they may not have considered before.
Is there anything else about you that you think readers might find interesting?
I’m the founder of The Dream Flow Creative Collective, a startup creative organization searching for truth through artistic expression. We do this by telling stories, making music, and exploring the possibilities of the human experience.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Hailing from the original birthplace of the atomic bomb, Los Alamos, NM, K.M. Ecke is an organic, free-range, preservative-free, philosopher-poet using universal truth to battle cultural insanity. Ecke, which is German for ‘corner’, is the child of a physicist and musician and grew up at the corner of creativity and logic. After ten years of existential exploration and creative experimentation, he releases his debut novel Moral Panic, along with an album of lyrically-focused songs, Change of Mind via his independent creative collective The Dream Flow.
Ecke strives to deliver a strong story with inherent value to his readers. The author is well-versed in writing, including essays, songs and poetry, the last of which the author finds the most efficient form of expression, and thus, the best way to improve his writing practice.
Initially intending for law school, a business law class changed his direction, and Ecke chose to pursue writing, soul-searching and creative projects. After several years of odd jobs learning about different pieces of the world, he began his own private music teaching business and attended Colorado Film School for a year and a half to study filmmaking. After 18-months in his program, he veered to his own path and established Dream Flow Media, the home to all of his creative endeavors; publishing, music and all additional branches of the many-faceted visionary. Along with his own creations, he strives to bring other artists into the fold to develop a creative collective for a variety of multimedia projects.
Ecke also works as a filmmaker for local non-profits and bands, and hopes one day to see Moral Panic on the big screen. The author lives in Denver, Colorado and hosts a storytelling micro-podcast Myths, Metaphors, and Morality. For more info, visit the author online at TheDreamFlow.com.
