[ID: A decorative orange ceramic plate with a pyramid of green herbs and sesame seeds, topped with deep red sumac and more sesame seeds. End ID]
زعتر فلسطيني / Za'tar falastinia (Palestinian spice blend)
Za'tar (زَعْتَر; also transliterated "za'atar," "zaatar" and "zatar") is the name of a family of culinary herbs; it is also the name of a group of spice blends made by mixing these herbs with varying amounts of olive oil, sumac, salt, roasted sesame seeds, and other spices. Palestinian versions of za'tar often include caraway, aniseed, and roasted wheat alongside generous portions of sumac and sesame seeds. The resulting blend is bold, zesty, and aromatic, with a hint of floral sourness from the sumac, and notes of licorice and anise.
Za'tar is considered by Palestinians to have particular national, political, and personal importance, and exists as a symbol of both Israeli oppression and Palestinian home-making and resistance. Its major components, olive oil and wild thyme, are targeted by the settler state in large part due to their importance to ecology, identity, and trade in Palestine—settlers burn and raze Palestinian farmers' olive trees by the thousands each year. A 1977 Israeli law forbade the harvesting of wild herbs within its claimed borders, with violators of the law risking fines and confiscation, injury, and even death from shootings or land mines; in 2006, za'tar was further restricted, such that even its possession in the West Bank was met with confiscation and fines.
Despite the blanket ban on harvesting wild herbs (none of which are endangered), Arabs are the only ones to be charged and fined for the crime. Samir Naamnih calls the ban an attempt to "starve us out," given that foraging is a major source of food for many Palestinians, and that picking and selling herbs is often the sole form of income for impoverished families. Meanwhile, Israeli farmers have domesticated and farmed za'tar on expropriated Palestinian land, selling it (both the herb and the spice mixture) back to Palestinians, and later marketing it abroad as an "Israeli" blend; they thus profit from the ban on wild harvesting of the herb. This farming model, as well as the double standard regarding harvesting, refer back to an idea that Arabs are a primitive people unfit to own the land, because they did not cultivate or develop it as the settlers did (i.e., did not attempt to recreate a European landscape or European models of agriculture); colonizing and settling the land are cast as justified, and even righteous.
The importance of the ban on foraging goes beyond the economic. Raya Ziada, founder of an acroecology nonprofit based in Ramallah, noted in 2019 that "taking away access to [wild herbs] doesn't just debilitate our economy and compromise what we eat. It's symbolic." Za'tar serves variously as a symbol of Palestinians' connection to the land and to nature; of Israeli colonial dispossession and theft; of the Palestinian home ("It’s a sign of a Palestinian home that has za’tar in it"); and of resistance to the colonial regime, as many Palestinians have continued to forage herbs such as za'tar and akkoub in the decades since the 1977 ban. Resistance to oppression will continue as long as there is oppression.
Palestine Action has called for bail fund donations to aid in their storming, occupying, shutting down, and dismantling of factories and offices owned by Israeli arms manufacturer Elbit Systems. Also contact your representatives in the USA, UK, and Canada.
Ingredients:
Za'tar (Origanum syriacum), 250g once dried (about 4 cups packed)
250g (1 2/3 cup) sesame seeds
170g (3/4 cup) Levantine sumac berries, or ground sumac (Rhus coriaria)
100g (1/2 cup) wheat berries (optional)
2 Tbsp olive oil
1 Tbsp aniseed (optional)
1/2 Tbsp caraway seeds (optional)
Levantine wild thyme (also known as Bible hyssop, Syrian oregano, and Lebanese oregano) may be purchased dried online. You may also be able to find some dried at a halal grocery store, where it will be labelled "زعتر" (za'tar) and "thym," "thyme," or "oregano." Check to make sure that what you're buying is just the herb and not the prepared mixture, which is also called "زعتر." Also ensure that what you're buying is not a product of Israel.
If you don't have access to Levantine thyme, Greek or Turkish oregano are good substitutes.
Wheat berries are the wheat kernel that is ground to produce flour. They may be available sold as "wheat berries" at a speciality health foods store. They may be omitted, or replaced with pre-ground whole wheat flour.
Instructions:
1. Harvest wild thyme and remove the stems from the leaves. Wash the leaves in a large bowl of water and pat dry; leave in a single layer in the sun for four days or so, until brittle. Skip this step if using pre-dried herbs.
2. Crumble leaves by rubbing them between the palms of your hands until they are very fine. Pass through a sieve or flour sifter into a large bowl, re-crumbling any leaves that are too coarse to get through.
Crumbling between the hands is an older method. You may also use a blender or food processor to grind the leaves.
3. Mix the sifted thyme with a drizzle of olive oil and work it between your hands until incorporated.
4. Briefly toast sumac berries, caraway seeds, and aniseed in a dry skillet over medium heat, then grind them to a fine powder in a mortar and pestle or a spice mill.
5. Toast sesame seeds in a dry skillet over medium heat, stirring constantly, until deeply golden brown.
6. (Optional) In a dry skillet on medium-low, toast wheat berries, stirring constantly, until they are deeply golden brown. Grind to a fine powder in a spice mill. If using ground flour, toast on low, stirring constantly, until browned.

Some people in the Levant bring their wheat to a local mill to be ground after toasting, as it produces a finer and more consistent texture.
7. Mix all ingredients together and work between your hands to incorporate.
Store za'tar in an airtight jar at room temperature. Mix with olive oil and use as a dipping sauce with bread.

Building port for 'delivering supplies cuz other methods aren't working' is a lie.
The other methods aren't working cuz they aren't allowed to work by the same ones who claim they're not working.
Air drops are out over the sea and contain food that is either not Halal or practically inedible, trucks have been denied entry and distribution for months, what gets through is used as bait to kill starving people risking their neck to get supplies for their dying families.
Port for supplies is a lie
Port is for a clear trade route, it's the root cause of this genocide being permitted by USA and European nations to begin with.
Remember The New Middle East plan?
That is what the so called 'Port' is for. It is not for the supplies, that is just what they will say to hide the history, like they always had. History lies. I suspect that they plan to use the records of their own news channels and papers to appoint it a reliable truth. Don't let them hide, don't let them forget.
Archive everything, from Zionists videos and news and claims and their propaganda to all that is delivered out of Palestine by the mujahid press reporters. Everything
We know the port is a lie. Keep the truth alive, don't let those who are complicit and like to pat themselves on the back to cover their guilt with falsifications forget what they played a part in. Whether it be politicians of USA or Europe or those of the rich Arab countries, whether it be news channels or those who play neutral.
The port is being build with rubble and corpses, stained with blood. It will never be clear from the curse and wrath of what it's being built upon

2024.06.27 - 2024.07.11 | SHANGHAI, QINGHAI, GANSU
haven't been active in a while because i've been busy as all get out :') anyway, at the end of june i went up north/west to see family—first qinghai, and then gansu. the last two photos i took from the train to qinghai (fields) and to gansu (desert). it was pretty cool to see the desert—i've never seen a desert like that before! there was also a sandstorm while i was there, which while probably a little dangerous, was also neat to experience (from the safety of the apartment, mostly). the first two photos are of the outside of the mogao caves in dunhuang—we weren't allowed photos inside the actual caves, so i can't show the murals, but they were stunning. the third row of photos are from the historical show in dunhuang, which was a partially interactive show that involved a lot of walking. the other photos are various meals—i've missed the food here so much! it's hard to get ahold of a wide variety of vegetables in the usa, and it's much easier to get ahold of qingzhen/halal food here (and especially in qinghai and gansu), plus a shot from when i went to the pudong public library with my friend (it's a fabulous library—i checked out an interesting text on chinese costume in history). i got back to shanghai on the seventh of july, and started classes on the eighth—they're honestly a little on the easy side for me, but it's still good practice! i'm very excited to see where this all goes :)

Muslims are definitely oppressed in the USA
Show me the paragraph in the American law where it explicitly states that Muslims do not have the same rights as any other American citizen.
On the other hand I have dozens of examples of how ethnic, religious and other minorities are legally oppressed in Muslim countries. And that’s leaving aside discrimination and violence… and women who can’t be considered a minority.
And if we’re talking about religion, there is not a single country in the Muslim world with actual religious freedom. Let’s call oppression what it really is, and not pretend that millions of people emigrated from Muslim countries to the west because they wanted to live in liberal countries where they wouldn’t face actual oppression.
The fact that some of them then used their newfound freedom to turn entire neighborhoods into Islamist enclaves where no public service, no business and especially no woman or girl can thrive is still a mystery to me. But no one is fooled anymore by the ones who cry Islamophobia when they’re told no you can’t put a veil on a child, no there will not be halal food at a public school, no people will still eat and drink outside even if it’s Ramadan, no we won’t use public funding to build a religious building, yes your children will have to listen to the evolution theory in history class and go to PA etc etc.
#people who want to impose their religion on others aren’t oppressed#they’re actively oppressing others#and using liberal rights to push an ideological agenda that is stirring up tensions absolutely everywhere#a man just got stabbed to death in Bordeaux for drinking wine on the Aid day#a young girl beaten to a coma by more than 20 boys for dressing like a western girl#so let’s just stop

MUN NAME: rinni, as dotted with hearts. OOC CONTACT: tumblr im is open for everyone and my discord is open to mutuals
▍▍▍ WHO IS TIANA ROGERS MALDONIA?
there is a young women who carries within her a dream she had inside since she was a very young girl passed down from her father: the dream of opening her own restaurant , a place that would both bring the community together and have people travel from miles around just to get a taste of her food. circumstances beat her down a bit , but why wouldn't they? tiana rogers was only human. she worked two jobs her entire life to try and get ahead against a system that wanted to keep her chained down and on top of everything she met a spoiled little rich boy who got himself tied up with the shadow man and tiana was turned into a frog.
becoming a frog was not the worst fate for tiana , no. being transfigured into something cooked up into classic french cuisine aided in changing the young women's perspective , especially those in wildlife and insects after encountering ray(mond) and louis along her travels. but , perhaps tiana's biggest change of heart came from the hoodoo queen of the bayou , mama odie. at first tiana did not understand but in growing to love naveen she did. tiana learned that if you solely focus on a task and ignore other aspects of lore that will not grant you happiness , it will not grant you the very dream you most desire to become reality. and in realizing her dream she learned that sometimes hard work is not always the only path to tread. a little bit of magic and a whole lot of love can carve out a happily ever after , making new orleans a place where dreams can indeed come true.
▍▍▍ KEEP IN MIND FOR INTERACTIONS:
O1. by default , tiana is twenty-nine years old. she has been in the restaurant business for nearly a decade at this point and has three other locations across the usa and one in maldonia as well. while , still a cook she's taken a bit of a backseat to focus moreso on the administrative aspect of restaurantiering but regularly hosts dinner parties for a plethora of charity events , getogethers with other disney princesses , and intimate family gatherings. O2. her current canon point is set during 1930s america , during the middle of the great depression. to go along with the above tiana's palace regularly gives back to those in need and any food that is not sold by the end of the day is donated to soup kitchens and directly served from her restaurant as well --- nobody is ever turned away if they can not pay , being in tiana's palace is akin to being inside her own home. O3. after being turned into a frog , some of the curse still lingers inside tiana and it grants her the ability to communicate still with animal kind. due to this , tiana has unironically found herself leaning more into cooking with meat that comes from more halal practices and uses every part of the animal if she can , nothing is wasted. O4. she is a princess in formality and title only. while she and naveen attend various political affairs as needed , for the most part she takes a backseat to the ruling of a nation side of maldonia. though , she is greatly loved by the people of new orleans and maldonia --- the people's princess if you will.
▍▍▍ WHAT HAS SHE BEEN UP TO RECENTLY:
default verse ( open ): ten years post movie making it the mid-1930s tiana has managed to stay afloat and open three locations across the united states ( her original , in new orleans. the next , in washington, d.c , and her latest is located in los angeles ): while she has mostly taken a back seat to the front end operations of her restaurant empire , tiana’s palace. she has been known to visit the various locations fairly often — when she is not being called to political events as maldonia’s princess with her husband , naveen. ( if i write with a naveen this detail will be omitted unless they say otherwise! ) pre movie verse ( plotting preferred ): before the events of the movie wip
▍▍▍ WHERE TO FIND HER:
the vast majority of my interactions i imagine will take place in either her restaurant , somewhere in louisiana , maldonia , or the countries of other disney princesses. though , i have no preference if they meet while tiana is attending a political meeting in maldonia , in the middle of service at tiana's palace , during the events of the movie , as a frog , or even in more modern-ish setting. my default verse is perhaps the most versatile in terms of location but i am always down to discuss and bounce ideas off!
▍▍▍ DESIRED INTERACTIONS:
O1. anything dealing with other disney princesses , i specifically love their interactions in wreck-it-ralf 2 and how old school disney characters used to hangout in 'house of mouse' that's the kind of vibe i am going for! i also would love for tiana to meet pixar and dreamworks characters too!!! O2. i love the concept from the twisted tale series and other works that feature tiana and i welcome crossovers. anything that'll allow me to explore tiana in things outside of the scope of the movie would be grand. as well as her adaption to the changes of basically going from a regular ol' girl to royalty overnight.
O3. naveen. as well as other canon cast members from princess and the frog but especially naveen. i do enjoy their banter and the opportunity to expanded on their dynamic , outside of romance , would be fun. with that being said also anything that'll have her balance her duties as a princess as well as a ceo : i think it would be fun!
▍▍▍ ANYTHING ELSE TO KEEP IN MIND?
while some canon libraries have been taken with tiana as a character, primarily revolving around her current canon point as a late-20s women and how she has faired with her business as a restauranteur and political princess. she is older and wiser but she is still the tiana we all know and love from the princess and the frog and all the more hard working and kindhearted.
i pull from any and all of tiana's appearances , maybe it be from: the movie , sophia the first , twisted tales , once upon a time , audiobooks , and tiana's banyou adventure. i have poured a lot of love into developing tiana over the years and continue to do so. i reference the movie and other bits of official crossover material a lot. i tweak tidbits here and there to better form a narrative and overarching story and to drive character development above all. i am most aligned with extensive emotion driven interactions , and though i do not mind one off ask memes for those that are not as into plot heavy novella style threads.

Loblaws Boycott. How to get affordable food?
Today is May 1st; which means it is the start of the Loblaws Boycott across Canada. For those unfamiliar with the situation, food prices in Canada have been climbing to astronomical sums. Our main chain Grocery Stores keep increasing prices beyond what is normal inflation. Because they know as Mortals, we need to eat. And the further north you go, the worse it gets. They have already been caught artificially raising Bread prices a few years back, and blaming the price hike on the War in Ukraine. They set a price, We pay for it, and then they keep the price cause clearly people are willing to pay /s
So a boycott has been organized by people of Canada through social media and has even been talked about by TV News Outlets. The idea being to speak with your wallet and pressure change. The problem for many, however, is...Loblaws is just so massive, they don't see other alternatives. They own No Frills, Great Canadian Superstore, Shoppers Drugmart, and a ton more. For many Canadians, it seems like Loblaws is their only option in their area.
So I want to provide a list of some options for people to still get fed. Or even if you don't want to engage in the boycott, you just wanna find affordable food.
Costco and Walmart If a friend of family member has a Costco Membership and is willing to take you with them, do it. The workers there don't police who has the membership, so long as someone has one. You can bulk buy a bunch of staples like Meat, Cheese, Toilet Paper and Coffee for much cheaper in the long run. However, Buying in bulk is not always feasible for everyone. They either don't have the space or they can't afford to drop a few hundred dollars on a single shop. Walmart is a controversial suggestion because they have some....history. And your values may require you to not shop at Walmart. But if you need some accessible groceries for reasonable prices, Walmart actually has a very good selection.
2) International/Local Stores This is not really an option if you live more rural. But if you can find a nearby Asian Grocer or Halal Store you can get a lot of stuff. And not just rice. Legumes, Beans, Meat, Seafood; you'd be surprised how much you can get. You may also find a gem of a bakery or butcher.
3) Farmers Markets It's getting to growing season in Canada. Be Sure to check your near by Farmers Markets. You'll mostly find Fruits and Veggies, but may also be some local honey and eggs if you're lucky. This is also a great option for people who feel eating Organic food is important.
4) Food Waste Apps There is a surprising amount of apps dedicated to preventing food waste by selling you food that is about to be thrown away. The food is still good, and the reason for Discarding varies, but commonly it's because it's approaching it's best before date or Expiration date. Food can still be consumed after it's best before date, so long as it's not spoilt. Different areas will have different Levels of Activity on Different apps. A store needs to opt in before you can buy anything. So check out a few different ones. Flash Foods, Food Hero, and Too Good to Go are popular.
5) Ugly Food Boxes A lot of food gets chucked cause it doesn't conform to our expectation of how that food should look. It grew in a weird way and despite being totally fine to eat; Stores don't want to sell them. So you can get Subscription Boxes of Ugly Produce. Which I think is kinda fun. I remember being younger and my mom pointing out the funny shaped peppers. This isn't entirely a new concept, and many people would of probably heard of Imperfect Foods. However, this is a USA only service; useless to us Canadians. But we can try Odd Bunch or Eat Impact. The bonus with this is it's delivered directly to you. Great for people like myself who can't Drive but love to cook.
6) Meal Kits You see it all the time on Youtube: Try Hello Fresh and get so many meals free, yada yada. Well....it might be worth a try. You can cancel these kits at any time, and them hop back on them later. Like a streaming service. A friend of mine apparently does this. Ordering a box when the value of what they're offering is worth the price to her. Not a great option if you tend to forget to cancel subscriptions *cough* (Hi) but it can be a really smart way to get exactly what you want for a good price. Plus if you use a sponsor code, or a coupon in the mail.... Hello Fresh and Make Good Food are the two more well known meal kits available in Canada.

[ID: A greyish brown stew presented alongside flatbread, red pepper paste, green peppers, and carrot sticks. End ID]
سماقية / Summagiyya (Gazan stew with chard, chickpea, sumac, and 'lamb')
Summagiyya (سُمَّاقِيَّة; also translitered "sumagiyya", "sumaghiyyeh" or "sumaqiyya") is one of the signature dishes of the Gaza strip, in particular Gaza City. It consists of lamb, chard, and chickpeas in a sumac-infused broth; savor and zest is added by a dagga of dill seeds, garlic, and peppers, and nutty depth by a generous drizzle of red tahina. The resulting stew is thick, earthy, and slodgily grey (due to the green chard and red sumac)—it also has the characteristic sourness of much Gazan cuisine.
Summagiyya is most often prepared during holidays, especially Eid al-Fitr; it's an excellent make-ahead dish for these occasions, since it's even better once its flavors have had time to meld and mellow overnight. It is served cold alongside fresh vegetables, and eaten by using flatbread to scoop up each bite. This recipe provides a spiced seitan recipe to replace the lamb, but you may also use any lamb or beef substitute of your choice.
Today, summagiyya is often prepared with Israeli white tahina, as decades of punitive import laws, taxes, and restrictions have enforced Palestine's status as a consumer, rather than an producer, of food products. Israeli tariffs on, and confiscations of, Palestinian goods have forced those tahina factories that survived to import sesame seeds rather than using locally grown crops, even as they export the best of their product to Israel. The dubbing of foods such as tahina and hummus as culturally "Israeli" cuisine works to hide this exploitative relationship, and cement an Israeli national identity through the subsuming and erasure of Palestinian existence. It is for this reason that Emad Moussa writes that Palestinian cuisine has a role in "protecting against a people's very extinction."
Medical Aid for Palestinians (MAP) has put out an urgent call for donations to provide medical supplies to Palestinian hospitals when supply lines reopen. Also contact your representatives in the USA, UK, and Canada.
Ingredients:
For the soup:
500g (2 large bunches) chard (شلق), diced
80g Levantine sumac berries (Rhus coriaria)
1/2 cup soaked and boiled chickpeas, mostly cooked (40g dry / scant 1/4 cup)
1/4 cup red tahina
1/2 cup (60g) all-purpose flour
1 large yellow onion
1/4 cup olive oil
1 tsp kosher salt
2 cardamom pods (optional)
2 allspice berries (optional)
More olive oil, to fry
Sumac berries can be found in the spice section of a halal grocery store. If you're unable to locate whole berries, pre-ground will do.
For the dagga:
1 1/2 Tbsp dill seeds
5 cloves garlic
1/2 green cubanelle pepper
2-3 dried red chilis (optional)
1/2 tsp black pepper
1/4 tsp cumin
Dill seeds may be found at a halal, south Asian, or speciality European grocery store. They are commonly used in Indian food and as a pickling spice. At a south Asian grocery store they may be labelled soyo, suva, shepu, or savaa.
For the lamb:
1 cup (120g) vital wheat gluten, aka gluten flour
1/2 Tbsp ground sumac
1/2 tsp ground caraway
1 tsp onion powder
1 tsp Palestinian 7-spice
1/2 tsp garlic powder
1/2 tsp sea salt
1/2 tsp ground black pepper
1/2 tsp ground cumin
1/2 tsp ground aniseed
1/2 tsp turnermic
1 tbsp olive oil
1/2 tsp soy sauce
1 tsp miso paste
2 cloves garlic, grated
2 tsp pomegranate molasses
1 Tbsp white or red tahina
About 1/2 cup vegetarian 'beef' stock from concentrate, or vegetable stock
Pomegranate molasses is simply pomegranate juice that has been reduced to a thick consistency. It may be found in the sauces section of a halal grocery store.
Instructions:
For the soup:
1. Soak dried chickpeas in cool water overnight, or in just-boiled water for an hour. Drain and re-cover with water, and boil for 30-45 minutes, until almost fully cooked. Drain and set aside.
2. Simmer sumac seeds in enough water to cover by a couple inches for about an hour, until the water is dark red. Blend the seeds and water together, then strain the mixture through a cheesecloth.
If you're using ground sumac, skip the blending step. Use a cheesecloth or very fine metal sieve (such as one intended for brewing tea) to remove the ground spice from the water.
3. Whisk the flour into the sumac-infused water.
For the lamb:
1. Combine all dry ingredients in a large mixing bowl. Add wet ingredients other than stock and stir briefly. Add enough stock to produce a soft, smooth dough.
2. Knead by hand on a clean surface, or put in a stand mixer with paddle attachment on medium-low, for about 5 minutes. You should see stringy strands begin to form in the dough.
3. Allow to rest, covered, for 5-10 minutes to encourage gluten formation. Knead for another 3 minutes. Do not over-knead.
4. Tear the dough into bite-sized pieces.

Stringy seitan being pulled apart into pieces.
You may also shape the dough into a slab and cube it with a sharp knife—the lamb or beef used in summagiyya is usually cubed—but I prefer the texture of torn seitan to sliced.
5. Steam the seitan pieces for 10 minutes in a bamboo steamer or using a metal steamer basket. Place the bamboo steamer in the bottom of a wok and cover its base by about 1/2" (1 cm), then raise the heat to boil the water; lower the heat to keep the water at a simmer. If using a steamer basket, place it over the opening of a pot containing a couple inches of water and bring it to a simmer. Start the timer when the water begins simmering.
6. Heat olive oil on medium-high and sear the steamed seitan pieces, turning as necessary, until deeply browned on all sides. Set aside.

Fried seitan pieces.
You can save a step here by searing the raw seitan, then returning it to the pot after you've fried the onions to simmer it rather than steaming. I found that this produced a mushier texture.
For the dagga (دقة):
1. Grind cumin and black pepper thoroughly in a mortar and pestle, then add dried red pepper and dill seed and crush coarsely. Add green sweet pepper and garlic and pound until a coarse mixture forms.

Dill seeds, green sweet pepper, garlic, and dried red chili on a cutting board, alongside dagga in a large granite mortar.
You may also use a spice mill or food processor.
To assemble:
1. Chop the onion. Wash the chard and slice it thinly in one direction; turn it ninety degrees and slice thinly again.

Diced chard, fried seitan, dagga, and sumac-infused water with flour.
2. In a large pot, heat a couple tablespoons of olive oil on medium. Fry chopped onion, cardamom pods, and allspice berries for a minute until fragrant. Add half of the dagga and fry until fragrant.
3. Add chard and fry, mixing often, until wilted.

Wilted chard in a wok.
4. Add sumac mixture, chickpeas, and water to cover. Bring to a boil, then lower heat to a simmer. If you didn't steam your seitan earlier, add it now.
5. Continue to stir and simmer until the stew is thick, homogenous, and greyish-brown, about 15 minutes.

Simmered stew.
6. Add the remainder of the garlic mixture, the red tahina, a pinch of ground cumin, the 1/4 cup olive oil, and salt to taste. Return the steamed and seared seitan to the pot and mix.
Serve cool with flatbread, sweet green peppers, bitter green and black olives, carrots, leafy greens, and/or pickles.

Halal Pastures Farm is a diversified organic farm located in the famous black dirt region of Orange County, NY. Farmers Samer and Diane firmly believe in sustainable agriculture and that soil health is the most important ingredient for producing a healthy crop. We recently chatted with Diane to learn more about their approach towards farming and the certified organic produce, eggs and pastured halal meats they offer.
How did Halal Pastures Farm get started? We started our farm out of a need to provide our growing family with wholesome food. Back in 2011, Samer read an article that Egypt rejected several tons of corn from the USA because it was genetically modified. That was the first time we heard of the word GMO (Genetically Modified Organism). We looked to our own faith to understand what kinds of food we are supposed to be eating. We discovered that, as Muslims, we are supposed to be eating food that isn’t just halal, but also Tayyab – which means wholesome, pure and good. We rejected GMO foods and wanted to feed our family wholesome food. Since we couldn’t find the food we needed to feed our family, we started making it ourselves.

Were you always farmers or did you have other interests and careers before becoming farmers? Diane is a lawyer and Samer is in finance. We are first generation farmers. Diane stopped practicing law to focus on the farm. We also homeschool our children. There is a statistic that 70% of farmers have income from a non-farm source, and we are no exception to that. Our careers helped support the farm and Samer continues to work his other job to sustain it.

As your name implies, Halal Pastures Farm produces halal meats and meat products. What does that mean exactly for those who aren’t familiar with halal? In Islam, halal just means permissible. If something is halal, it means it is permissible to do, consume or use. When it applies to meat, it means that the meat was slaughtered in accordance with Islamic rules.
What are your main flagship products? Our main products are halal meat, vegetables and eggs.

Do all your shoppers follow halal? Or do you have non-halal shoppers? Everyone shops from us [including people who are not following halal]. The common theme amongst everyone who buys from us is that they really appreciate good food made with intention.
Halal Pastures Farm is a diversified farm which means you grow a variety of crops and animals on a single farm. What are the advantages and disadvantages of this approach to farming? In terms of geography, our farm is spread out across Orange County. The crops that we don’t sell or are spoiled are saved and given to the chickens to eat. And we are experimenting this year with using the manure from our chickens as fertilizer for the soil in which we grow our crops. We also work with farmers throughout upstate NY who raise the animals organically and in accordance with their life cycle.

Halal Pastures Farm grows a lot of different types of fresh produce. How many different varieties of fruits and vegetables do you currently grow? We are currently growing around 600 varieties of vegetables and fruits. We try to grow varieties that are unique and different to what you would find in a supermarket. For instance, [this past summer] we grew a yellow pointy tomatillo called Chupon de Malinalco1. We grew an eggplant called Rosa Bianca2 and a tomato called Orange Strawberry3. We also grew a fruit called the husk cherry4 that people just loved. 1Chupon de Malinalco is an heirloom Mexican tomatillo that grows up to four inches long. It’s lemon yellow in color with a cone, slightly heart-shape and tapered tip. It tastes sweet and fruity with a slightly tart taste. It’s great for making salsas and can be enjoyed fresh. 2Rosa Bianca is an Italian heirloom variety of eggplant noted for being particularly creamy and tender. 3Orange Strawberry is a German heirloom tomato variety that produces large, bright orange fruit shaped like strawberries or oxhearts with a meaty flesh and sweet, rich flavor. 4A husk cherry, also known as a ground cherry, is a small, sweet fruit that grows in a papery husk. They are related to tomatoes and tomatillos. Their exotic, mild flavor has been compared to a cross between tomato, mango and pineapple.
You have an extensive network of greenhouses that allow you to grow through the colder months. Are your greenhouses heated or unheated or both? We have both heated and unheated greenhouses in which we are currently growing winter greens and spring greens including kale, chards, mustards and spinach. We overwinter our greens because it concentrates the minerals in the vegetables and makes them taste sweeter.

Halal Pastures Farm is a certified organic farm. Does this refer to all your products? Our produce and eggs are certified organic. Our meats are certified organic and/or 100% grass-fed and grass finished.
What are some of Halal Pastures Farm's newest products and value-added products? We have many new products that have come down the pike. We have introduced organic halal chicken bone broth, smoked organic chicken breast (its nitrate and nitrite free), tomato sauce, jams (strawberry, rhubarb, and ground cherry ginger flavors), pickles, tomatillo salsa, harissa, garden pickles and pickled beans.

What are some of your best-selling products? Thankfully, all our products do well. The eggs are a top seller right now.

What are some of Halal Pastures Farm’s plans for the future? We hope to one day purchase land that is large enough to house our full farming operation.
Is there anything else you’d like our shoppers to know about Halal Pastures Farm? We work really hard, love what we do and take our work seriously. We are loyal to our customers and hope to always produce food that is wholesome and good for them.
Thank you, Diane, for taking the time to talk with us and sharing more about your farming philosophy and operations. Find Halal Pastures Farm and their wide range of certified organic products and halal meats on Sundays year-round at our Park Slope Farmers Market and during the summer season at our Cunningham Park Farmers Market.

Y'all are always shitting on other countries, but the moment they respond with the same bs, suddenly it's bad and you are victims.
Never realized how nobody does this to other countries but the USA, and everyone else does it only to the USA? Never heard of reaping what you sow? The USA has been culturally colonizing the whole world for the last century, trying to make everyone like them. Every time something is done differently from the USA, it's stupid or bad, and even so-called leftists does it. A lot of USAmericans online have said to me that they have no reasons to know geography outside their country, but we should know each one of their states because they are more important than our countries. Racism, which historically has been about creating races based on people's origins (Europeans' texts talk about a French race, a German Race, an Algerian Race, etc... They have been massacres because of this racism), is about skin colors ONLY because USAmericans said so. Yesterday, I saw a video about a harmless wedding tradition from a south European country, and the comments were full of USAmericans calling it "stupid white European tradition". USAmericans spread misinformation about other countries, to the point that if you try to correct things, they tell you they know more about it than you, but no, you don't know more about my culture, my country, its history and its law than me (that time y'all were spreading on Tumblr that France made Halal food illegal, which was not true at all) And no, it doesn’t work in the other sense because of the USA cultural colonialism. Making stupid petitions, with no knowledge about what really going on but also the arrogance to think a foreign government will listen to a bunch of random USAmericans (again, so-called leftists, wanting another country to bend and obey the USAmericans). Under videos talking about a biographic manga from a survivor of Hiroshima, the comments are full of USAmericans saying bs like "W USA" for the bombs. We are talking about a survivor, an innocent child fed propaganda by an Empire and traumatized by another, telling his story as an adult, and USAmericans are celebrating the violence, because "they deserved it", "Pearl Harbor", "Japanese are racists anyway". Holding Russian citizens accountable for the war in Ukraine as if they haven't been living in a dictatorship for decades, aka decades of propaganda and control. They are supposed to stop their government but y'all, who are in a way more free country, cannot???
Every time I saw Europeans make those comments about USAmericans, it was because they made comments about Europe. Calling Europeans "colonizers" when only half of the European countries participated and less than 5% (only 2% for France) had a say or even was informed about colonization. Also, news flash, but people in Europe aren't the descendant of colonizers, those are the white folks in ex-colonies (white folks in the USA have all more colonizers blood than me. I have none) Blaming Europe for the problems in the USA like the colons in the USA couldn't make decisions on their own, you have been independent for 200 years, and the majority of the country wasn't colonized yet. (The USA is not like the other colonies, stop acting as if it is) Saying Europe invented racism, which is simply wrong as racism and xenophobia can be observed everywhere in the world centuries ago and, also, racism based on white supremacy was invented by white colons in America and brought to Europe (There were black colons at the beginning, and free black people with rights, but the white colons didn't like that and decided that anyone with a bit of non-white blood was inferior. Europe was more functioning on a Catholicism supremacy than on skin color, and have been in contact with Africans and Asians well before Christ. Btw, he isn't whitewashed, no JC representation is supposed to look like him, that's forbidden. They used symbolism and the materials they had. Made him white to look like the locals most of the time. There is a church near me where Jesus and Marie are the blackest possible because they used a black wood, and this statue is old af. People there thought for centuries that Jesus and Marie were black) Mocking British people food for lacking spices is classicism, spices were a luxury only less than ≈10% of the population could afford, cultural food is often what the majority of the population could afford to make. Saying Europeans have no culture or that the USA does our cultural food better, which is deeply insulting and wrong (there are multiple cultures in one country, even if they are smaller than a state. Just in France, the bretons and the basques are different because their history is) Insulting a culture in general just because it's a European culture. Calling black Europeans by their African origin instead of their nationalities, which is deeply racist in Europe (only racists here will not call a black person European if they live here), and refusing to correct yourself when those black people tell you to not do that (French soccer players said multiple times to call them French to USAmericans, and were called racists for asking to be referred by their nationality). Saying to someone they have "enough" representations because they are Europeans, as if white USAmericans are a representation of every white culture (they're not) and there weren't any European cultures and minorities who have been harm through history (Poland was destroyed by WWII, with anyone having a high school diploma being killed. The concentration camps were build for the Slavs, and around 20 millions were killed by the Nazis, the total number will forever be unknown, but because some are Russians, we better not care, right? Btw, slavery literally come from the word Slavs because they were sold as slaves outside of Europe. Yeah, some Europeans were also slaves). And I have so much more example.
When France went through terrorist attacks, USAmericans treated us like shit. Being French online, even on Tumblr, was hard, and it made it to the national news the way USAmericans spoke of the attacks. We were grieving, and USAmericans laughed at us or blamed us. Even still today, when those attacks are brought up, USAmericans tell us we deserved it. People, innocents, not even all French, from all religious background, deserved to die because we authorize sacrilege. (btw, multiple attacks targeted the Jewish community and were antisemitic, but y'all so-called leftists don't care if you can be against France. Also, the gov at the time immediately said that Muslims were the second victims of the attacks.)
You want people to be nice to you? Then learn to be nice to others.
Btw, half of the bs I talked about is present in the tags USAmericans have left on this post.
"wow smericans are so shitty because [something we have no control over] [something we have no control over] [really blatant fatphobia] [something we have no control over] [antiblackness] [antiblackness] [antiblackness] [anti-indigenousness] [something we have no control over] [more fatphobia] [anti immigration sentiment]"
#USAmericans stop acting better than everyone and like you are a victim challenge#I literally cannot be French online without being harassed with the we hate French bs and it's tiring#y'all don't know shit shut the fuck up#Y'all eat the anti-France propaganda because of 9/11 up it's incredible#learn to have some responsibility and stop blaming Europe#you're bad because of yourself grow up#btw this feeling do not apply to countries who were colonized europe did and still is making things awful#but the USA are not a colonized country they are colonizers#I'm not making friends with this post but I'm tired of how many USAmericans acting all-mighty and playing victims I have to see on the dail#like they aren't awful to others all the damn time
