My club got this mini layout in a donation and we've been upgrading it for show use. It's actually starting to come together nicely and already good for some photogenic shots.

This is Buckle a 2-6-2 prairie tender engine for Union Pacific.
They've been a way for a while but are thrilled to be back on the Dream-A-Way railroad, especially once they got the word that the railroad was in trouble with the a good chunk of their engines out of commission.
Personality wise, Buckle is a "smokebox in a steam cloud" kind of engine. They can get distracted easily, but is a loyal friend and will work their hardest to help out. Buckle is extremely shy around people, this they prefer doing freight work. They also love bird watching and bug catching.

Just a simple llama, making her way from town to town.
I made this as a fun experiment of building model sets for character pics. Bastet, our friendly neighborhood llama hobo, was the perfect subject for this pic.

Poles, as opposed to pantographs, were by far the most popular means of current collection for interurban lines in North America. The pick-up is held against the live overhead wire with about 28 points of pressure applied through a spring-load3d trolley base mounted on the roof. (This is why they are called "trolley cars" -- much to the amusement of the Brits 🛒). 2-rail DCC in HO scale may or may not have a live overhead, but getting the pole on the wire is one of the most fiddly bits of model railroading ever...
Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Poling" is something else entirely, where freight cars are shunted ...with a pole! One end of the thick pole is seated in a cast iron "poling pocket" on what the Brits might call the buffer beam of the locomotive and used to push against the same poling pocket hardware located on any corner of every freight car. Tight radius, incompatible couplers, adjacent tracks -- all problems that poling solved. Obviously not OSHA compliant, but it was railroading!
Andy Gautrey has done a bangup job of modeling North American traction -- Yakima Valley Transportation Company's General Electric interurban steeplecab freight motor and other very typical equipment and operations that were archetypal of electric lines, especially those that engaged in a large amount of interchange freight business.

⚠️warning- noisy as hell, turn down your volume for the video ⚠️
Picked up an antique Tri-Ang model set from the UK. How wonderful! She's growly as hell but runs fine. Might get a little quieter when I clean and oil it...
The only big issue is, the Tri-Ang models have huge wheel flanges- sometimes they don't play nice on switches/ turnouts on modern HO/OO track. The only problem child is the dining car, which is the oldest of the models. Might look into replacement wheelsets.
The coaches seem pretty light, too- Might add weight to improve smoothness
Back on the floor again, as the new train table is taken up with a Lionel project. Adds British realism (cough cough Sam's Trains)

Best Friend by Berang Berang Via Flickr: My HO scale model of the 1830 locomotive Best Friend, built by the West Point Foundry of New York for the South Carolina Canal & Rail Road Co. This was the first locomotive to go into actual service in America. I scaled the model from the original plans for the locomotive, and 3D printed it. It is now available on Shapeways.

For some reasons Instagram restricted the access to my account 'LegoModelTrain'. So please be patient until I‘m able to post pictures again.
On this picture:
Detailed scenery at my H0 scale LEGO layout. You can discover a lot of vintage accessories from the early LEGO 1:87 series. For example the automated garage door build into the Bauhaus-themed corner building.

I recently got this book and am getting the materials stated in the book to make some. When they come I may post more about my learning journey of scratch-making model trains.

Grandchildren Watching the Maple Valley Short Line is the Reward of Model Railroading
Grandchildren Watching the Maple Valley Short Line is the Reward of Model Railroading
Hours and hours invested in a model railroad often result in a few moments that make the entire effort worth every moment working. For a model railroader, the work is fun so it’s not as though I don’t love every minute with my layout. The Maple Valley Short Line Model Railroad is my third layout and is far more detailed than any other I have built. Having it up and running is rewarding enough,…

For National Train Day, I’ll share my latest project related to Life Beside The Tracks (my comic); San Joaquin Valley Lines No. 1. This model started out as a nice Bachmann model of Pennsylvania Railroad No. 566. However, I only wanted it because the engine was perfect to represent the small 4-4-0s that were in the Central Valley. Examples include Yosemite Valley No. 1 (later No. 20) and San Joaquin & Eastern No. 1331 respectively.
Anyway, here’s the lore behind the San Joaquin Valley Lines:
The San Joaquin Valley Lines was established in 1892 by local businessmen who were fed up with Southern Pacific’s high freight rates and the lack of competition in their area. As a means to break the Octopus’s monopoly, these businessmen (along with the soon approaching Santa Fe from Bakersfield) established this railroad to serve the east San Joaquin Valley area with comparatively fair rates while also having local control on operations. The communities serve towns like Exeter, Lindsay, and Dutch’s Corner (later shortened to Ducor) along with cities like Fresno and Bakersfield.
In the context of the comic and the future layout, the focus will be their operations around the fictional small city of Putnamville CA in current times. The current operations of the line include the shipment of produce, lumber, and chemicals for a processing plant south of town along with other mixed freight.
So yeah, that’s my first bit of lore for my future model railroad. Enjoy your day and Happy National Train Day!!!
