@cacodaemonia tagged me for this and I'd rather do ANYTHING than work right now so...
20 Questions for Writers
1. How many works do you have on AO3?
149 at the moment.
2. What’s your total AO3 word count? 119,562
3. What fandoms do you write for?
99.9% Star Wars The Clone Wars, but there are a few for Stargate, Firefly, Supernatural, and other SW incarnations thrown in.
4. What are your top 5 fics by kudos?
When the Cat's Away (167)
Pillow Talk (137)
Intensive Care (131)
Forty Winks (128)
Whiskey, Tango...Foxtrot?! (108)
Interestingly (or perhaps predictably?) they are all Codywan and the last four were written for an event.
But also? If I ran AO3, I would eliminate Kudos.
5. Do you respond to comments?
Always. Though not always promptly. I feel like the least I can do is thank people for taking the time to both read AND comment.
6. What is the fic you wrote with the angstiest ending?
Hmm. IDK. I really don't ever write angst? How does one define an angsty ending?
7. What’s the fic you wrote with the happiest ending?
I'm not sure how to answer this one, either. Most of my fics have what could be described as happy endings...I don't know that any of them are happier than any others, though?
8. Do you get hate on fics?
Not yet. But I think I fly low enough on the radar that no one really knows to read me unless they know me personally?
9. Do you write smut? If so, what kind?
Welp. I have tried, anyway. I did a series of smutty drabbles as practice in 2023, but they pale in comparison to what I would consider actual smut.
The closest I think I have come to real smut is a Thire/OFC Jedi piece, but I think even that is probably like rated R for nudity, not graphic sex.
I do not really feel qualified to write m/m smut and I only did the m/f as an exercise to prove to myself that I am not an actual prude.
10. Do you write crossovers?
I have, in the past. But nothing since the early 2000s.
11. Have you ever had a fic stolen?
Not that I am aware of.
12. Have you ever had a fic translated?
Yes! So cool to have been asked that.
13. Have you ever co-written a fic before?
Yep--a couple of times, with mixed results.
14. What’s your all time favorite ship?
So. I don't actually tend to ship? At least not like everyone else seems to? I know I know. I do fandom wrong.
15. What’s a WIP you want to finish but doubt you ever will?
A sequel to my first piece of SW fic that was written in 2002 right after ATOC came out. I started it when Kenobi was airing, got maybe 20K words in and...stopped. For lots of reasons.
16. What are your writing strengths?
I think I am pretty good at rhythm and character POV. And maybe narration.
17. What are your writing weaknesses?
I think I used to be pretty decent at action, but now it really vexes me. It tends to feel very tit-for-tat in drafts which drives me crazy because the rhythm is off to my "ear".
18. Thoughts on writing dialogue in another language in fic?
I don't care for it, actually. It feels very forced and inaccessible, so I wonder why people even bother. A sprinkling of words here and there is okay, but whole conversations? No thanks.
19. First fandom you wrote for?
Well. Do my self-insert Wonder Woman (Lynda Carter era) pieces count? I was like 6 or 7 at the time...so, not IN fandom. If not...Highlander: The Series.
20. Favorite fic you’ve written?
I don't know that I have one? Maybe one of my old HL fics, which I am sure I would hate now, but really loved at the time.
Otherwise, I have gathered my personal fave SW fics into a series:
Spiral Bound
I like them all for various reasons. Don't make me choose.
And now, god damnit, I have to go back to work. But I tag @odekiisu, @come-chaos, @valkeakuulas and @elthadriel, as well as anyone else who wants to play.
And here's a copy of the questions, to make it easy for folks to answer:

8, 14, and 25 for the end of year ask game!
Thanks for the ask! Sorry for taking an eternity to answer it. :'D
8. Game of the year?
Oof, it's a tie between Hogwarts Legacy and Baldur's Gate 3, which is funny because I've never actually finished a single run of BG3. I've never even made it out of Act 1 (yet). It's such a blast, though, how could I not mention it? Also Gale. Just, Gale.... ❤
14. Favorite book you read this year?
I think I read the most books this year than in any year previous. I rediscovered my library card and kind of went to town. Again, we have a tie: The Name of the Wind (Patrick Ruthfuss) and The Fall of Hyperion (Dan Simmons). I loved both author's writing styles, and the characters - and worlds - they created. If I had to choose just one, I'd choose Name of the Wind simply because it's fantasy and deep in my bones I'm a fantasy-loving nerd, despite trying to convince myself to leave it behind some years back for some stupid reason. Glad I came back to my senses.
25. Did you create any characters (in games, art, or writing) this year? Describe one.
Oh oh, I get to talk about Royce? Royce, whomst I love?? As much as I would love to gush on and on about him he's still kind of new(ish) so there's limited info to share. Let's see. He initially started out as a (kind of random tbh) HL avatar, then the brainrot had me making a DnD version of him so I could play him in BG3, and now I'm attempting to adapt him into an original character untethered from existing media. He's definitely still undergoing development in that regard, but I can say that he has an affinity for fire magic, is friendly, kinda clumsy, low-key goofy, a bit impulsive and easily distracted, and loves to sing and play musical instruments. I have no art to share at the moment, so here's a screencap of his BG3 self, complete with dorky hat because, yes, I forgot to mention, he loooves hats.
Tumblr media
Forgive my graphics card, it can't render hair for whatever reason. *sigh* He's still adorable, though, in my totally neutral, unbiased opinion. ;)))
Thanks again for the ask!

4 Actions to Develop Your Product's First Prototype
Tumblr media
Typically, around 55 percent of applications submitted receive licenses. One method to enhance your chances of obtaining a patent give is to develop your prototype. While sending a prototype is not purely called for by the U.S. Patent Office for sending your application, it does serve to show that your suggestion has been analyzed in enough detail to value consideration.
Here are four steps to obtain your prototype built so you can transform your concept into a patented, rewarding product. also check how to promote my invention
1. Develop a Concept Sketch
Attract your idea to assist you to visualize your prototype in greater detail. For one point, in the very early stages of developing your prototype, you'll have a lot of concepts running through your mind and competing with each various other.
Maintain a sketch note pad to supply paperwork that can be made use of when sending your patent. It also might be found useful if you ever require to safeguard your ownership of your copyright. Illustrations attracted by hand can bring even more weight in court than electronically created drawings, states intellectual property consultant CreateIP.
2. Develop a Virtual Prototype
At some point, it's mosting likely to be invaluable to develop a digital illustration of your idea. A common electronic style device utilized by engineers and also various other specialists is AutoCAD, which enables them to make both 2-D and 3-D makings.
A 3-D rendering allows you to rotate and also animate your online sketch, so you can imagine it from all angles. Devices such as NVIDIA Iray, CATIA Live Making as well as Quadro can further allow you to transform your 3-D drawing into a photorealistic prototype, aiding you to see roughly how a physical version of your layout will look. If you're not competent with computer drawing and making devices, professional graphic designers or prototype designers can aid you with this step.
Follow inventhelp for more advice https://www.instagram.com/inventhelp/?hl=en
3. Construct a Physical Prototype
Once you have an online prototype, you prepare to develop a physical prototype. If you have the skill, you can build one on your own. If you need assistance, there are numerous kinds of sources you can touch to get this action done. One way is to go to a professional prototype designer. A choice is obtaining a designer or designer to develop your prototype. If you're cash-strapped, you could seek a handyman or promote at a commercial-style university.
As soon as your initial prototype is constructed, you might find defects that require to be corrected before you look for a patent. You may need to build several models to obtain a good one done. Normally, very early working models are built of less costly materials than later variations to save cash while repairing layout imperfections. As you improve your layout, you can ultimately make a prototype that replicates your actual product as it will be marketed to consumers.
4. Situate a Manufacturer
Once you have a working prototype, you're technically all set to make an application for a patent; nevertheless, you could wish to take the added step of situating a maker that can produce your item at a lucrative cost. If your suggestion is going to be profitable, you require to be able to build it at a cost that is low sufficient that you can cover costs without cutting as well far right into your revenue.
Manufacturers that offer free examples, as well as 3-D printing, can help you cut expenses both in testing and also production phases. As an example, manufacturer apple Rubber supplies customized o-ring samples to assist you to examine your prototype and identify how to produce it at a cost-effective cost. Go to several suppliers as well as suppliers to get price quotes, so you can figure out one of the most inexpensive products and also techniques for placing your prototype right into manufacturing.
One means to improve your odds of getting a patent grant is to build your prototype. Once you have a virtual prototype, you're all set to construct a physical prototype. An alternative is getting a developer or engineer to build your prototype. When your very first prototype is developed, you may locate flaws that require to be corrected before you seek a patent. You might require to build several models to get a good one done. You can also get more help with inventions

Suitability Evaluation of Urban Soils underline by Asu River Parent Material forCassava Manihotesculenta and Bambara groundnut (Vignasubterranea (L.) Verdc) Production in Ebonyi, Southeastern Nigeria
Authored by Chris-Emenyonu
Tumblr media
Nigeria is the most populous black nation in the World and in sub Saharan Africa [1]. Nigeria’s population 202,363,773 million [2], which is 61% of the World’s Population. 51.2 % of this population lives in urban area. Increase in population, especially in urban area means more persons to be fed and yet less available food in these areas due to insufficient food production as a result of unplanned land uses resulting to land degradation of urban landscape, Inadequate information on soil suitability prior to land use and lastly, Inadequate Information on urban and peri-urban soils for crop cultivation. Land suitability evaluation is used to ascertain the compatibility of the land for a specific type of use [3].
Cassava deserves special recognition as a crop which has placed food on the table of various homes in Nigeria and Africa as a whole. Nigeria is among the major cassava growing countries of the World and cassava is relatively adaptable to marginal soils and erratic rainfall. According to Anikwe, et al. [4], famine rarely occurs in regions where cassava is widely grown since it is known to provide a stable base to the food production system. According to Ahukaemere, et al. [5] cassava is primarily grown for its starch containing the tuberous root. These roots are the major source of dietary energy for more than 500 million people in African [6,7]. Cassava is a major crop in South Eastern Nigeria and can help in the quest for food security for the teeming population.
Bambara groundnut is the third most important legume after groundnut (Arachishypogaea) and cowpea (Vignaunguiculata) in Africa. Azam- Ali, et al, [8] reported that Bambara groundnut seed makes a balance food due to the fact that it contains sufficient quantities of carbohydrate (63%), protein (16.25%) and fats (6.3%) with relatively high proportions of lysine and methionine as percentage of the protein (6.6 and 1.3% respectively) and it can be consumed in different forms either in the immature green state or matured form. In South Eastern Nigeria, it is well consumed especially in Enugu State; it serves as one of their local delicacies. If the yield of these crops is to be increased, there is a need to match cassava and bambara groundnut cultivation with the suitability of soil for its production.
With the recent increase in urban and peri-urban population, suitability evaluations of soils for cassava and Bambara groundnut production in these areas are important as it is essential in enhancing their production in these areas.
Materials and Methods
Description of study area
The study was carried out in Amatam, Isiagwu in Ebonyi State rainforest agro-ecological zone of Nigeria. Ebonyi state lies approximately within longitudes 7° 30’ and 8° 30’ East of the Greenwich Meridian and latitudes 5° 40’ and 6° 45’ North of the Equator [9] while the study area lies between 5057.290N and 7033.445E with an elevation ranging from 73 to 81m. The climate is humid tropical. The rainfall pattern is bimodal with peak in July and September but this has been altered by climate change. The minimum rainfall is 1700 mm while the maximum is 2000 mm with a mean of 1800mm [10]. The temperatures are 27 °C and 31 °C for minimum and maximum, respectively. The relative humidity is 60% during the dry period and 80% in the rainy season [11]. Isiagwu area has savannah vegetation characterized by abundant tall grasses and other herbaceous plant species. Shrubs are also found but not in a regular pattern amidst the grassy or herbaceous vegetation are trees that are scare. Relief of the study area is lowlying and undulating [9]. The geology of the area is made up of sequences of sandy shales, with fine grained micaceous sandstones and mudstones which are Albian in age and belongs to the Asu River Group [12]. Low input agriculture is generally practiced and land preparation is by slashing and burning.
Field study and soil analyses
Three urban soils were randomly selected for the study. One pedon was dug in each urban soil and a total of three pedons were evaluated. A total of 15 soil samples were collected from the three pedons based on horizon differentiation and analyzed in the laboratory for various soil properties following the procedures outlined by Soil Survey Staff [13].
Land suitability evaluation was done in line with the FAO Framework for land evaluation [6] for the arable crops. The land requirements for Cassava (Manihotesculenta) and Bambara groundnut (Vignasubterranea (L.) Verdcwere matched with the land characteristics of the study area.
Geo-graphical Co-Ordinates of Urban Soil (Amatam, Isiagwu, Ebonyi, State)
• Pedon 1
5057.33N-7033.445E, Altitude: 73m
• Pedon 2
5057.290N-7033.401E, Altitude: 81m
• Pedon 3
5057.454N-7033.167E, Altitude: 73m
Results and Discussion
Soil characteristics
Table 1 shows the characteristics of the study sites, and Table 2a & 2b show the land requirements for cassava and bambara groundnut production while Table 3 and Table 4 show the suitability evaluation. The soil texture ranged from sandy loam to loam in pedon 1, sandy loam in pedon 2 and sandy loam to sandy clam loam in pedon 3 ( Table 2). Mean sand content ranged from 481.85g kg in pedon 3 to 669.6 g kg-1 in pedon 2. Clay content was increased with depth. Silt content ranged from 192.8 g kg-1 to 330.27 g kg-1. Bulk density ranged from 1.40 to 1.44 gcm-3. Soil reaction was very strongly acidic (4.37) to moderately acidic (5.79). pH values obtained from soils of Asu River group is similar to those of Nwite, et al. [12] and were higher than critical limit of pH range (pH 3.7 – 4.9) which is limiting to plant performance and may cause aluminum toxicity [14]. Organic matter ranged from 5.08-7.94 g kg-1 and this is below the critical limit of 10 g kg-1 as reported by Esu [15]. Low organic matter of the area is typical of urban soils because of the removal of the rich top soils as a result of urban activities. Soils were low in available phosphorus with values ranging from 7.60-10.34 mgkg-1 and total nitrogen ranged from 0.30 to 0.85 g kg-1. Cation exchange capacity ranged from 7.37 to 12.90 cmol kg-1 while percentage base saturation ranged from 86.94% to 95.67%.
Land suitability evaluation of studied soils
Land characteristics considered for the cultivation of cassava and Bambara groundnut were rainfall, temperature, topography (slope) and drainage. While the soil characteristics considered for cassava production wereorganic carbon, pH, cation exchange capacity, Total Nitrogen and Base saturation (Table 2a & 2b). All urban sites studied were marginally suitable (S3) for the production of cassava as a result of organic carbon (Table 3) and these values were lower than the critical limit of 20-40g kg and for the production of Bambara groundnut, all site studied were currently not suitable for its production due to rainfall (Climatic) and Total Nitrogen (Fertility) and pH in site 3 (Table 4) [16].
Conclusion
Generally, from the results, organic carbon was the most sever fertility characteristics limiting the production of cassava in the studied urban soils as values were low, while rainfall and total Nitrogen were the major constraints limiting the production of Bambara groundnuts in studied urban soils.
However, for cassava production, management practices that enhance soil fertility such as addition of organic materials should be encouraged, while for the production of Bambara groundnut should be practiced under irrigation agriculture and nitrogenous fertilizers should be applied

How a Car Wrap Can Benefit Your Business
If you want your business to be successful, you must market it well. However, it can be difficult to find advertising methods that are profitable and yield valuable results. For this reason, many people are turning to unconventional advertising methods to promote their businesses. An example of this type of approach is the use of car wraps.
When you install a car wrap, you're not limited to a single banner ad or a single time slot. Your car's graphics go wherever you go, and you have full control over where and when you advertise. You can drive in crowded neighborhoods or park in areas that receive heavy foot traffic. You also have the opportunity to use van wrappers in your delivery or service vans that you already drive a lot.
Billboards are often lost when cars pass on the highway, and most people change channels when commercials appear. However, it is difficult to ignore the large car graphics on a vehicle driving right next to you. This gives you the potential to reach a much larger audience with your car, truck and truck wrappers. In fact, studies by the Office of Traffic Audit for Media Measurement have shown that a vehicle wrap can receive up to 70,000 views in a single day.
Vehicle wraps give your business continuous exposure for a one-time fee. There is no monthly rental cost, and the initial cost is often less than what you would pay for a single month of billboard advertising. Vehicle wraps generally last at least five years, and independent advertising researchers have estimated that they cost just $ 1 per thousand impressions. Plus, if you get changeable truck or bus wraps, you can completely transform your ad at a very low additional cost.

Sensor used at CERN could help gravitational-wave hunters
CERN - European Organization for Nuclear Research logo. Sept. 2, 2019 A new seismic device developed by CERN and JINR is now being tested at the Advanced Virgo detector
Image above: Aerial view of the Advanced Virgo detector, where a precision laser interferometer used at CERN was installed and is being tested (Image: Virgo collaboration). It started with a relatively simple goal: create a prototype for a new kind of device to monitor the motion of underground structures at CERN. But the project – the result of a collaboration between CERN and the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna, Russia – quickly evolved. The prototype turned into several full-blown devices that can potentially serve as early warning systems for earthquakes and can be used to monitor other seismic vibrations. What’s more, the devices, called precision laser inclinometers, can be used at CERN and beyond. The researchers behind the project are now testing one device at the Advanced Virgo detector, which recently detected gravitational waves – tiny ripples in the fabric of space-time that were predicted by Einstein a century ago. If all goes to plan, this device could help gravitational-wave hunters minimise the noise that seismic events cause on the waves’ signal. Unlike traditional seismometers, which detect ground motions through their effect on weights hanging from springs, the precision laser inclinometer (PLI) measures their effect on the surface of a liquid. The measurement is done by pointing laser light at a liquid and seeing how it is reflected. Compared to weight–spring seismometers, the PLI can detect angular motion in addition to translational motion (up-and-down and side-to-side), and it can pick up low-frequency motion with a very high precision. “The PLI is extremely sensitive; it can even detect the waves on Lake Geneva on windy days,” says principal investigator Beniamino Di Girolamo from CERN. “It can pick up seismic motion that has a frequency between 1 mHz and 12.4 Hz with a sensitivity of 2.4 × 10−5 μrad/Hz½,” explains co-principal investigator Julian Budagov from JINR. “This is equivalent to measuring a vertical displacement of 24 picometres (24 trillionths of a metre) over a distance of 1 metre,” adds co-principal investigator Mikhail Lyablin, also from JINR. The team assembled and tested the PLI prototype at JINR and at CERN’s TT1 tunnel. It performed so well that it showed the potential to be a helpful early warning seismic system for the High-Luminosity Large Hadron Collider (HL-LHC) and other machines and experiments. The Large Hadron Collider and its proton beams are extremely robust to seismic activity, but the HL-LHC will use narrower beams to increase the number of proton–proton collisions and as a result the potential for particle-physics discoveries. This means beams are more likely to go off centre in the event of a high-magnitude earthquake with an epicentre relatively close to CERN. PLIs located at several points around the machine could serve as early warning systems for such events.
Graphics above: The PLI (bottom two plots) picked up the same signals as devices already installed at Virgo (top two plots) for an earthquake in Northern Italy on 17 August (Image: Beniamino Di Girolamo/CERN). Given the PLI’s potential, the HL-LHC project has provided support to the team for the constructionof  several new PLIs. One is already installed at the Garni Seismic Observatory in Armenia and another has been deployed with the support of CERN’s Knowledge Transfer group and Italy’s INFN institute to the European Gravitational Observatory in Italy, where Advanced Virgo is located. The Virgo PLI is the result of a collaboration that started after the APPEC conference in November 2018, triggered by the JINR Director-General and encouraged by CERN Management. The collaboration went so smoothly that, less than a year later, the Virgo PLI was tested. The results from the first tests are encouraging. With just 15 minutes of data taken on 6 August, the PLI picked up the same signals as devices already installed at Virgo, and from that day onwards it started running continuously and detected several small-magnitude earthquakes. The Virgo and PLI teams are now setting up the flow of data from the PLI to the Virgo data system. This will make it easier to compare data from different seismic devices and to assess the PLI’s potential impact on Virgo’s operation and detection of gravitational waves. “Virgo and the two LIGO detectors in the US have recently begun another search for gravitational waves, one that will reach deeper into the universe than previous searches,” says former Virgo spokesperson Fulvio Ricci from La Sapienza University, Rome. “We’re confident that the PLI can play a part in this important search,” he added. Note: CERN, the European Organization for Nuclear Research, is one of the world’s largest and most respected centres for scientific research. Its business is fundamental physics, finding out what the Universe is made of and how it works. At CERN, the world’s largest and most complex scientific instruments are used to study the basic constituents of matter — the fundamental particles. By studying what happens when these particles collide, physicists learn about the laws of Nature. The instruments used at CERN are particle accelerators and detectors. Accelerators boost beams of particles to high energies before they are made to collide with each other or with stationary targets. Detectors observe and record the results of these collisions. Founded in 1954, the CERN Laboratory sits astride the Franco–Swiss border near Geneva. It was one of Europe’s first joint ventures and now has 23 Member States. Queer Representation: How Can We Get The Gays to Watch Our Movie?
Tumblr media
The Vito Russo Test is the queer equivalent to the Bechdel Test (which tests the representation of women in films). It was created by GLAAD (Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) and is used to test the representation of LGBTQ+ people in film. The way a film passes the test is if there is an “identifiably lesbian, gay, bisexual and/or transgender” character who isn’t defined by their sexuality and/or gender identity, and who is significant to the plot. Despite the fact this test is quite easy to pass, most films do not. Out of the 109 films released by major studios in 2017 only 14 had LGBTQ+ characters in them (that’s 12.8%). Gay men are the most represented out of those 14 films (64% or 9 out of the 14 films feature a gay man that pass the test) while trans people are the least represented in 2017 (zero out of the 14 films featured transgender characters). These numbers are insanely low, and shows that there is a clear problem with the representation of LGBTQ+ people in films.
But, even in the movies that feature LGBTQ+ characters, how well are they being represented, really? Films like Call Me By Your Name (2017), Carol (2015), Blue Is The Warmest Color (2013), and Brokeback Mountain (2005) have all been praised as iconic queer movies with great representation, but how great is this representation? Right off the bat you can see that all of these characters are white. Not a huge surprise when it comes to Hollywood, considering how bad they are at representing people of color, but, still, not all queer people are white, obviously—Marsha P. Johnson, anybody? How about happy endings? Shouldn’t queer people be allowed to see a relationship like their own end happily? Well, it seems not. In Call Me By Your Name, they break up; in Blue Is The Warmest Color, they break up; in Brokeback Mountain, they break up and one of them dies (the good-olde “bury your gays” trope https://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2017/06/30/queerbaiting-bury-your-gays-tv_a_23005000/ )! Carol seems to be the only one that has a semi-happy ending. Although, Therese (Rooney Mara) and Carol (Cate Blanchett) do breakup at one point, at the end of the film it is implied that they get back together. An implication is a we can get apparently. Oversexualization is also an issue. All of these movies have semi-graphic sex scenes in them, with Blue Is The Warmest Color’s sex scenes are borderline pornography—and definitely from the male gaze. Now, sex isn’t the problem here, if a director wants to show two characters getting it on, they very well should be allowed to do so! The problem is that the only kind of movies that are popular and feature queer people at the forefront are romantic dramas (usually tragic) that are very heavy on the sexual discovery. This would be fine if there were just as many goofy LGBTQ+ romantic comedies or action movies with queer leads as there are LGBTQ+ romantic tragedies.
Now, that’s not to say things aren’t getting better! With the release and success of Love, Simon in 2018, a romantic comedy about a teenage boy coming out as gay, things are, hopefully, starting to look up. However, there has recently been a new disturbing trend when it come to LGBTQ+ representation in films. A film will announce that there is an “openly gay” character in their movie before the film is released. Thus, attracting a large queer audience that is sorely disappointed when they realize “openly gay” actually means “not openly gay at all.” Take Beauty and the Beast (2017) for example. Before the release of Beauty and the Beast, Dir. Bill Condon announced that there was going to be an “exclusively gay moment” (WHAT DOES THIS EVEN MEAN?) in the film involving LeFou (Josh Gad), Gaston’s groveling sidekick. Fans were obviously excited! But, when the movie came out, what we got was very a stereotypical depiction of a gay man (who is supposed to be crushing on Gaston?), and one moment (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sadujj45Y90 blink and you’ll miss it) where LeFou accidentally starts dancing with another man and… that’s it—wow, how groundbreaking.
While there is at least a small moment in Beauty and the Beast, other films that use this tactic to get a more diverse audience don’t even bother following through. Before the release of the much anticipated Solo: A Star Wars Story (2018), screenwriter Jonathan Kasdan announced that Lando Calrissian (Donald Glover) is pansexual. This revelation prompted fans to go crazy, but when the movie came out there was nothing, besides some semi-flirty lines and an “implied” romantic relationship with a droid (okay…), explicit in the film that showed Lando’s pansexuality. Some people (https://lwlies.com/articles/queerbaiting-solo-lando-calrissian/ ) are calling this trend, a new from of queerbaiting, and going by the definition (“the practice of hinting at, but then not actually depicting, a same-sex romantic relationship between characters in a work of fiction, mainly in film or television” https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Queerbaiting ) I’m have to agree. Except, this kind of queerbaiting is almost worse because the “hinting” starts before the film comes out. Therefore filmmakers are literally using a the possibility of a potentially queer character as bait to get more LGBTQ+ moviegoers into their theaters.
There are other, less nefarious, examples of this kind of queerbaiting. Tessa Thompson, who plays Valkyrie in Thor Ragnarok (2017), made a post on twitter before the film came out about how her character is bisexual and how she wanted that to come through on the big screen. However, she was quick to add that Valkyrie’s sexuality is never explicitly shown in Thor Ragnarok (https://www.avclub.com/thor-ragnarok-ultimately-cut-the-one-scene-that-confir-1820047758 check out this article). It’s clear that Thompson wan’t trying to get more LGBTQ+ people to see Thor Ragnarok, she was just trying to spread the word about her character’s sexuality—Valkyrie is canonically bisexual in the comic books. The character of Albus Dumbledore, the grandfatherly headmaster of Hogwarts from the Harry Potter film and book series, could also be another example of this kind of queerbaiting. However, unlike all of the other examples, Dumbledore’s sexuality was revealed by author JK Rowling after the release of the last Harry Potter book in 2007 (https://abcnews.go.com/Entertainment/story?id=3755544&page=1 check out this article from that year talking about it). Dumbledore’s sexuality was never explicit in the Harry Potter books or movies, but recently Rowling has started another film series that takes place in the Potter universe (but during the 1920s) called Fantastic Beasts. Before the release of the second installment, it was announced that Jude Law would be playing a young Dumbledore in that next film (Fantastic Beasts and the Crimes of Grindelwald), and people began to ask if Dumbledore’s sexuality is going to be addressed in these films. Not much was said by Rowling, but before the movie was released Dir. David Yates said Dumbledore’s sexuality is not “explicitly” shown in the film. Fans were obviously upset be this—myself included. However, after seeing the movie, I feel like it’s safe to say only a person in serious denial would claim that Dumbledore is straight after watching The Crimes of Grindelwald. There isn’t anything “explicit” in the movie (Dumbledore doesn’t say “I’m gay” or kisses a man) but the relationship between Dumbledore and Gellert Grindelwald, the antagonist of the series and Dumbledore’s ex-lover, is shown or alluded to in in more ways than one—not explicitly telling the audience about his sexuality is in character for Dumbledore, who has always been secretive. As a fan of Harry Potter and the Fantastic Beasts films, I hope in future installments Dumbledore’s sexuality will be more explored—and it should, especially since the main antagonist is his ex-boyfriend!
Queer representation is important. The constant censoring of LGBTQ+ people and relationships in media needs to end. It’s often said that this kind of censorship is to protects kids from exposure to “inappropriate” content. News flash, there are kids out there who are queer! (Because queer people have always been queer.) I remember when I was a kid how big of an impact seeing queer characters and couples in film and TV were for me. Seeing characters like Tara (Amber Benson) and Willow (Alyson Hannigan) from Buffy the Vampire Slayer made me feel like I wasn’t alone and that there wasn’t anything wrong with me. Even though queer representation in film is still lacking it’s getting better, and it’s getting even better on TV shows! The Legend of Korra, and Steven Universe are two kids shows that feature LGBTQ+ couples. Sense 8, Orange is the New Black, Queer Eye and Black Mirror (specifically season 3’s episode San Junipero) are all Netflix original series that have great LGBTQ+ representation and/or are LGBTQ+ centric—trans characters played by actual trans actors? YES! Things are looking up and I have high hopes for the future when it comes to queer representation.

Stefan Sagmeister
Tumblr media
Stefan Sagmeister, born in Brendz Austria on the 6th of August 1962, is a graphic designer, conceptual typographer and performance artist who is most famous for the use of typography, unique style of somewhat controversial imagery, and humorous design.
Although rejected in the first attempt, Sagmeister was accepted into a private art school in Vienna when he was 19 years old. Later succeeding in one of America’s top Art and Design universities, Pratt Institute of Brooklyn, he moved back to Austria to complete his military services. Perhaps his first spark of Sagmeister-ism was the poster design he did for Hong Kong Design Awards(1992) by 4A’s with the now-classic controversial nudity and humour.
He starts to further establish his style when he starts his own company, Sagmeister Inc. with the main design focus on CD covers for artists such as Lou Reed, The Rolling Stones, and David Byrne The unique and effective use of optical illusion, layering, and colour makes the viewer want to feel the product in hand, gaining some a Grammy nomination for the best album cover. He also designed outside of the music industry, creating the all famous poster for AIGA in 1999 by physically cutting into his skin for typography and the use of nude photography.
In 2012, he renames his company to Sagmeister & Walsh after collaborating with Jessica Walsh to expand their design field in such ways as the Happy Show. This is the company in which he is currently working in as well as making some non-commercial designs using his name.
Extra side notes: The design process mentioned by Sagmeister was, referencing Maltese philosopher Edward DeBono explains, taking a random object as a starting point into designing something irrelevant to the original object. Sagmeister also shares and critiques other designers’ works on his Instagram page. In his interviews, he mentions countless creators from all different fields of art and design such as architects, musicians, painters, sculptors, directors, and more.
The change of Sagmeister’s perception or approach to design is evident in recent works, Sagmeister & Walsh: Beauty.
On his website ‘Answer’ section, Sagmeister states, “When I was a young designer I believed that it's all about the idea and that form and style are secondary… I came to believe strongly this is wrong. Formal attributes including beauty are absolutely central when it comes to producing anything that should function well.”
He indicates that he moved from ideas and functionality based designs to a low-functionality design that integrates beauty. He even comments that saying design is, “all about solving problems” is a piece of bad advice given in the industry, backed up by his points such as, “the Pantheon in Rome, 2000 years old and it is still there, in use, because it is so incredibly gorgeous that no generation had the heart to tear it down.” or, “the public housing projects of the 50ies and 60ies… were not fit for human habitation, - they needed to be torn down again 20 years later.”
The ever-evolving designer continuously takes in the surrounding environment as well as inspiration from other creators to show his uniqueness. It is clear that he will extend his influence and expand his one and only world of design.

Using design to create change
Design for sustainability
As designers we play critical roles in the development of products, objects and visual culture.
Important role of minimising environmental footprint during the manufacturing of products and establishing sustainable practices within the industrial world.
Sustainable development urges people to be conscious of social, economic and environmental issues.
Materials
Sustainable development
Designers who are interested in reducing this footprint, are thinking beyond the aesthetic and functional qualities of design and focusing on the materials and their whole lifecycle.
Circular design
Circular packaging and products refer to the product lifecycle, including the type of materials used, how they are maintained and how they are disposed of.
Designers must consider and think about all aspects of what goes into producing, using and disposing products designed.
Questions include:
What are the resources needed to develop prototypes?
What are the resources needed to produce? - thought provoking
What kind of packaging is needed to transport these products?
What is the plan for disposing of the product when or if it is no longer usable?
What will the ecological footprint be?
Can the product be recycled?
The relationship between the products and the design and their users - circular design
Circular economy systems - a way of assessing the lifetime of a product and its ability to be successful in terms of sustainability whilst also maintaining sales.
 Economic, social and environmental sustainability
Economic sustainability
Economic prosperity in capitalist societies is associated with increased consumption. This can be a challenge for designers who are interested in sustainable practices, as capitalistic societies thrive in the business of convincing people to consume.
Many designers work in a way which disregards long term societal wellbeing, the concept of consumption and an economic virtue
Social sustainability
Globalisation - transformed the ways industries conduct business
Social sustainability is the way in which people benefit through products designed
Promote social inclusion
More attuned to human needs
Environmentally conscious patterns of behaviour
Consumer benefits are as regarded as the economic gains
Tending to the needs of humans
Environmental sustainability
Design makes demands on nature
Consider ecological footprint
Minimising damage to the natural environment, the use of natural resources and the creation of products that will have low or no ecological impact.
Decoupling - breaking the correlation between economic growth and environmental degradation
Thinking about the future of the planet
Design exists within a larger system
Designing in an interconnected world natural economic and social systems coexist
Designers have a vital role in bridging the barrier of language which exists between the goals of an industrial world and a sustainable one
Rethinking of the process of how we make things, not just settling for what we already know or what is considered as a trend
Product lifecycle
Make sure not to negatively affect future generations
Help contribute to society

The whole world is being suffocated by plastic and single use plastic - a huge and almost irreversible global issue - in which humans are the main cause for
Living in a throw away society - throw away wrappers and containers are very difficult to avoid during this convenient times
Most packaging is encased in plastic
Plastic is made from petrochemicals, spews greenhouse gases and it takes more than a century to break down.
Seedlip (case study)
Is a maker of distilled non alcoholic spirits
Home compostable gift box
Composed of biomass and mycelium - the root structure of fungi is durable and lightweight packaging that can break down in compost in 40 days.
In future work I want to avoid using plastic as a material in any designs or products that I work with. Instead I would want to find alternative solutions such as sugarcane, or algae which are bio based sources and are biodegradable or compostable.
This market and solution is expected to grow in future years as both consumers and manufacturers envision a waste free world, in which packaging feeds into the environment rather than polluting it.
The movement towards being conscious about the environment is often associated with millennials - an ecofocus poll of us shoppers conducted a survey in 2019 in which nearly 57% of millennials said they try to buy products that are made up of plant based materials.
The design goes hand in hand with the communication of how to dispose of the product which should be signalled or indicated.

Malika Favre Method
Malika Favre is a french independent illustrator who describes her work as minimalistic, bold, colourful and pop. Her method is dominantly minimal vector illustration which is a method that I am most drawn to as a designer. Malika Favre’s creative process is one which I want to integrate into my future work. She takes pictures and collages them together, for inspiration and research. This is her starting point for her work. Malika Favre looks into contrast, colours, patterns, light and shadow and graphic elements which emerge from the images. She captures the essence of a location, object and looks for the overall vibe that is articulated from the series of images. A vibe - Muted colour palette and no colourful houses. The sky was the only thing that was bright - most houses were white.
The second step is articulating the colour palette from these images which are true to the images. She then looks for shapes, how they might relate, or not relate.
Malika then begins sketching which series of images were a starting point. She often creates a base for her illustration by sketching significant parts of the island as shown below
Malika Favre then adds in the narrative, drawing from her own personal experiences.
Malika then sketches with human presence and then sets herself a brief and develops and refine ideas based on brief. With this in mind Malika started to generate and develop her ideas. Using graphical aspects, colour palette and guidance from her brief she was able to come up with the 6 illustrations.

Future led practices
Using vector, collage, photomontage, risograph, screen printing and cyanotype as my main future led practices. A combination of digital and analogue methods to gain a broader range of design methods and skills.
Vector Illustration is my preferred practice, and is like my default method when approaching projects and working with clients. Vector illustration for me is the cleanest and most minimal method, which can be used across many design outputs and collateral. Vector is a base for risograph and screen printing, which are two other methods that I would want to look closely into. Having more design skills and alternative ways of designing, offers more options for the clients you work with.
Cyanotype is an interesting method which I have briefly touched on in 2021, and is a method that I would consider picking up in my future practices.
Product photography, styling, and interior design are also methods which I encourage myself to experience and explore in my years as an emerging designer. Product photography and styling attracts and draws me in because of its ability to tell a story. I believe that design and photography go hand in hand, and it would be adequate to be able to offer these skills as a couple working with clients in the future.

Environmentally conscious about working with clients, and how their products will impact on the environment. Considering and have a consciousness and awareness of the product lifecycle. Producing and executing high quality, organic and natural designs which feed the environment rather than degrade or pollute it. It has gotten to that point in time, in 2021 that every move and decision we make is taking away from future resources. Using alternative materials to plastic such as algae or sugarcane which are biodegradable or compostable. Collaborating with clients, organisations and charities, ensuring that their values align with mine -  care for environment, conscious design, circular design. Circular design, living with the ambition of a circular economy. Aligning design with nature, instead of separating humans from nature. Working alongside charities which give back to the community and environment.
Natural, organic, ethical materials, colours, vibes, vegan or vegetarian friendly - giving back to people in need. Trying to create a cure, rather than assess the symptoms. Connecting on a personal and social level, creating calming, and still designs which uplift and radiate.
Methods include continuing to develop my vector skills, adobe skills and to look and explore further into analogue skills such as screen printing, risograph, cyanotype and collage. Also possibly down the avenue of product styling and/or photography as through my research I have noticed that I feel very drawn to this. Coupling design and photography could provide more options and opportunities for clients.

What are yours and your /favorite/ nicomaki headcanons?
My favorite NicoMaki headcanons? Hrm… where to begin…? Imean I’ve explored quite a few already in HtHaN. Am I allowed to include those,or should I stick to ones I haven’t covered yet? Maybe both? Yeah, I’ll doboth.
Anyway, probably one of my biggest headcanons is that thingsseldom go as planned. This is based partly because both girls are bumbling foolswhen it comes to love, though good luck getting either to admit it, or evenrealize it in Maki’s case; Nico fancies herself a romantic and is more likelyto have grandiose plans. But the idea is also steeped a bit in reality, as manyin my family have plaques that read along the lines of “Life is about how youhandle Plan B” and a running joke is that we need to add “or Plan C, or Plan D,or…”
That said, Plan A failing is a theme I’ve tried to carryinto HtHaN. Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t read The Proposal story arc, butNico certainly had big plans, most of which did not come to pass. However, atthe end of it all, she realizes that what is far more important to her is thefact that she and Maki are engaged and Maki is happy; the details of how it allhappened just don’t matter when compared to that. I’m also currently collectingnotes for the shenanigans that will occur during the wedding, the honeymoon andall of the events that lead up to the big day, so spoiler warning, not muchwill not go off without a hitch or two, or three…
Mind you, I can’t help giving the two a break every now andagain and allow things to go as planned. Spoilers for How to Celebrate a Maki, but not much went off script there. But while things going as planned is fineevery so often, where’s the fun in a story if absolutely everything goesperfect for the characters?
One thing I have noticed in the LL universe is that of theeye colors we have seen, the mothers seem to have all passed down theirs totheir daughters, and son in the Yazawa family. This got me thinking about theeye color of a child born to Nico and Maki. Would she take the Yazawa crimsonor the Nishikino amethyst? Honestly, I am leaning towards red, as both theYazawa and the Takami families have proven it to be quite the dominate genethrough multiple children. So, I guess if I ever end up writing scenes thattake place after the numbered set in the HtHaN timeline, any daughters are morelikely going to end up with red eyes. Hrm… I should probably make sure that is inmy notes…
Another favored headcanon of mine that should be painfullyobvious to anyone who has read even just two or three scenes of HtHaN is thatNico thoroughly enjoys teasing Maki, because a flustered Maki is an adorableMaki; not to say she isn’t adorable elsewise, of course. However, on rereadingsome of my own work, I have come to realize that the teasing I have portrayedthus far is fairly heavily on Nico’s side. That said, I do still headcanon thatMaki enjoys teasing Nico in return. So, I guess I’ll have to include more ofthat at some point.
And sometimes the teasing goes a bit too far which leads tobickering or fighting. This is by no means a groundbreaking headcanon for thepair and has been explored in what I would estimate to be at least 95% of the NicoMakifics out there. However, it remains one of my favorite aspects of the volatile pair. And while some fans bemoan the aspect as being unrealistic and “not howrelationships work,” I must vehemently disagree; I’ve seen it work in real life, many, many times. As the two push against the other’s boundaries, they learnmore about them. And by bickering over trivial things, they form a bond oftrust that will hold strong when life throws more important things at them overwhich they may disagree.
Both Nico and Maki are two prideful and stubborn individualsthat come from vastly different upbringings; it is only natural they butt headsevery now and again. However, they both see in the other something they admire, envy, wish to emulate or simply enjoy. They also recognize, be it consciously orunconsciously, that their relationship will take effort and believe that thepositives will outweigh the negatives.
And from the fights spawns a bit of a quirky headcanon ofmine; the trope Insult of Endearment. For whatever reason, I’ve always likedthe idea of insults being used affectionately in a couple. And while the canonmaterial has given me nicknames for my YohaRiko pairing in HL, the µ’s side ofthings has really only given us a Maki who uses -chan with Nico exclusively anda Nico who does the same with Maki, though a bit more sporadically – pre-animematerial occasionally contradicts this, but Characterization Marches On. Assuch this left me free to come up with something for HtHaN. And while Nico’slater use of “Dear” is a certainly more in line with common terms ofendearment, Maki’s “Idiot” is unquestionably on the side of the affectionateinsult.
Wow, this is ending up almost as long as some of my scenesand I’ve only listed a few… so maybe just a few quick ones with shameless self-promotinglinks to the scenes in which I’ve included them? Maki is a lightweight when itcomes to drinking, and remains one throughout. Maki will resort to living like astereotypical bachelor when Nico isn’t around. The couple can bicker and makeup spontaneously. And finally, Maki isn’t good with kids, but Nico is. I wishto further explore all of these headcanons as I continue to write scenes forHtHaN.
Finally, there are the headcanons that are a bit morechallenging to explore while keeping HtHaN mostly a K/G and T rated fic – The Incidentnotwithstanding – and that is physical intimacy in the relationship. I have abacklog of notes on this topic, yet no driving desire to write about them in anygraphic detail. The keyword there being driving, as sure, the desire exists, just not a very strong one. There are things I would like my readers tounderstand about the couple, but the last thing I want is for HtHaN to becomesmutty. Happy fluffy NicoMaki is my favorite NicoMaki and that is how I wouldprefer HtHaN to remain – again, The Incident notwithstanding. That said, asanyone who has read scenes from Consolation Prize onward would know, I am notabove implicit implications that intimacy occurs offscreen, frequently.
One of my headcanons along these lines is that despite Nico’sbravado about being the cutest girl on the planet, she actually has a fairlylow view of herself when it comes to being sexually attractive. Combine thiswith Maki’s self-conscious reluctance to pursue anything beyond hugging and kissingand things are quite awkward for a while. Eventually, Nico comes to realizethat Maki is indeed attracted to her, but even years later, she gets a smallrush of joy when Maki says or does something to remind her of this fact.Eventually, Maki is able to move past her shyness, though really, only behind closeddoors, but progress is progress.
I also headcanon Maki as having a higher drive than Nico. Isee her as growing up fairly naïve to most things sexual, beyond the cold, scientific knowledge needed for pursuing a career in the medical field. As abit of a late bloomer, she initially chalks it up as trying to “make up forlost time” but eventually realizes she just has a strong drive. And as for Nico, she absolutely loves knowing she has such an effect on Maki, even if it doesexhaust her from time to time. Honestly, I think noelclover put it best in thispost with the whole “Touching Nico feels good -> I like feeling good -> Ishould touch Nico more” thing. That really sums up my NicoMaki intimacy headcanonsquite well.
Actually, the more I think about it, perhaps I can include allof this in a scene after all. I’ve kinda sorta opened the door for such a scenewith where I left off in HtHaN 6. Perhaps 7 will be either Nico or Maki, or both, looking back on the development of the intimate side of their relationship. Thatmight be a way for me to include my ideas in the story without actually goinginto detail on anything.
Huh… That did end up being longer than some of my scenes… Que zura, zura.
