Deciding to move forward with The Circular Design Poster Concept
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The poster reflects the concept of circular design. The arrows wrap, and weave around the earth, holding it. Circular design uses the 3 r’s of reduce, reuse and recycle. In every project moving forward I would like to implement circular design into my design briefs, using organic materials if its a product output, but also being aware and conscious of my design decisions and how they impact and influence the future generations and environment.

Poster design draft
A few ideas for the poster, using minimal vector illustration.
The rationale.
“We are living on this planet as if we had another one to go to” - Terri Swearingen. Circular design as a catalyst for change. There is no plan b, however design can be used for good, and for thought.
The whole planet, and the second half planet represents how much resources we are using currently, but we are only living on one. Our resources are exhausted.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The second concept uses the world, and the circular design arrows, emphasising the need to implement the 3 r’s. And to think about the lifcycle of products, which ultimately contribute to the wider society and planet.

POSTER IDEAS/SKETCHES
I had orginally had my own work which responded to a previous brief earlier this year. It was just placed there to see how it could work, and was just temporary. I felt super inspired the other day, I was reading through quotes, from Earthrise Studio, Two Degrees Creative and New Standards which I all came across via instagram.

Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Earthrise Studio. Earth Overshoot day.

From these quotes and information, I felt inspired and came up with a few poster ideas.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The poster needs to be reflective of the critical commentary, and almost be the champion image of your postcards, reflecting them as well. Everything being interconnected. I looked into the world, using vector illustration as my method, through illustrative and conscious design. To convey and illustrate the message of circular design, or how “we are living on the planet as if we had another one to go to” - Terri Swearingen.

RECIEVING FEEDBACK
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Recieving feedback on my third paragraph of contexts.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Just a few suggestings on rewording, paraphrasing looked good. Say why its important to you to use circular design. David also highlighted a few links for me to have a look at, one is called ‘First things first revisted’ and the other is a physical book ‘Good: An Introduction to Ethics in Graphic Design ’. I wasn’t able to find a free copy of the book, but I have been looking further into a book which I still have from the library called ‘Sustainble Thinking: Ethical approaches to design and design management.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Which I took notes and unpicked.
Talked about ethical beliefs, your values -  professional and personal, what skills you have, what are your strengths and who would you want to work for?

PLANNING
Organising and planning my existing notes and paragraphs. Creating a more cohesive and coherent flow in between paragraphs. Integrating the idea of having 4 body paragraphs rather than two larger ones. So would go context, method, context, method. Analogue, analysing, taking notes of what to include, what to move where, what to not include.

Tips on Essay Writing - more planning
Tumblr media
Sues Group, WK8, 2021. Panapo Content. https://aut.au.panopto.com/Panopto/Pages/Viewer.aspx?id=a4c7fde0-640c-44e6-b6f5-ada101781b53&start=16.763845
1. Name of the method. 2. Provide background and an explanation Situate the method through context (you could use a quote to situate the method) & describe the method, the processes used, techniques and tools or recipies etc. 3. Keywords used in to define the research focus are highlighted. 4. What is the purpose or function of the method, how does it influence the outcome, how does it inform the look or feel of the work? (The effect the method has on the look or form of the outcome creates the bridge between your contexts and methods). 5. Additonal information to define the term used. 6. Citation (for quotes or explanations of terms).
 Key words - from postcards
Highlight
Create key contexts I want to discuss
1st paragraph
Discuss circular design  - mention seedlip as an example - from cards, as well as hello cup
Explain what circular design is
Circular economy
 Start with context
Sets the scene
The neighbourhood in which I want to create work
How I think about work
Influences and work that inspire me
Circular design is my opening paragraph
Influence
Why does it mean something to you
Background to your practice
Through discussing other peoples work first!!
Over arching idea - the big idea
Then filter down into what you are going to do
 From broad circular design
More general - discuss influences in more details - go back to sources - what more can I get from my sources about these people - why they use circular design
Bring in influences - mention
 2nd para Methods
Circular design
Hinges on methods
Illustrative design, vector illustration - conceptual - conscious - designing for thought
Pick key methods from influences
Links?? Make connections
Environment
I want to use illustrative design through storytelling
 3rd para Context
Specific to me
Bigger - now talk about yourself
Circular design - circular packaging - circular economy - closing the loop - pushing beyond aesthetics - thinking more consciously about the product lifecycle
Collaborate - work alongside companies, brands - create brands for the people and the planet
How might you integrate circular design in my work?
Address personal aspect of the notion of circular design through storytelling of illustrative conscious, and considered design
How am I interested in those ideas - explain ideas and why I'm interested in them - what does that mean for my design practice - how will it alter change or reinforce my design practice
 4th para Method
How I'm going to work?
Creative process
Working with the current issues - raise awareness
Using vector, collage, photomontage
Conscious - considered design
For the future - what methods can I use to portray my ideas/contexts
This is how circular design works, this is how I am going to incorporate circular design into my own work
More tips
Go back to sources
Find other sources as well
Understand?
Take key words - do some more online searching
Reference sources
Google scholar
Good quality website
Book sources - use the sustainable design - have another read through
Cift through abstracts
Go back to sources you have - make it work - if need be - go wider
Everything you claim for yourself - needs evidence
Start broad
Narrow down
Into discussion about your practice and how you will carry out your practice
In order to produce this outcome I'm going to work in this way
Introduction about yourself
Refer as Malika Favre then Favre (last name)
In the same way that Mailka Favre works - creative process… I will integrate this…
500 words per paragraph
Cards are just snippets
Drill down into that meaning - pull ideas over - put into your own voice - your own practice

Finding more inspo
Whilst I was just using instagram, a lot more of my feed and suggestions have aligned with circular economy, circular design and circular packaging! Crazy how the universe works like that!
EMMA LEWISHAM
I came across this interesting brand called Emma Lewisham which they describe themselves as “Carbon positive, circular-designed, scientifically-backed & 100% natural skincare”. They are a skin care brand encompassing every value which are aligned to my own.
Tumblr media
In one of their posts they talk about what a circular business model looks like. I found this super interesting as well, as it is some research that I haven’t yet come across. So it was a good find, as it enabled me to visualise what a circular economy looks like visually.
Tumblr media
GOODSOSLO
I also came across a designer/ design studio called goodsoslo. They describe themeselves as “ethics & aesthetics - we design consumer brands and packaging for the people and planet”. Again, this jumped out at me, as that is the kind of design I am interested and where my curiousity lies for my future work. Designing with meaning, and being conscious of how my design actions and decisions have an impact on the planet and its resources.

Refining the Abstract
Humans live in a throwaway convenient based society and have been for generations, it is in the nature of humans to choose desirability of products, experiences and services over sustainability. We are all guilty of it at some point in our consumer focused lives. As a communication designers, I have a power to create change and use design as way to ‘feed the planet, rather than degrade it,’ (Communication Arts Interactive Annual, 2021). My curiosity and passion lies within using communication design as a catalyst for thoughtful change for future generations. This essay touches on methods of minimal, whimsical, thought provoking illustrative vector illustrations, digital photomontage and analogue processes such as collage, cyanotype, riso-graph and screen printing. The core context of working alongside smaller local businesses and or with charities aiming to give back to the community and environment is explored in this essay. Through storytelling of illustrative, conscious and curated design. In addition this essay highlights an expansion on circular design, exploring the conceptual meaning of circular design, how designers play a role, and thought provoking designs through a conscious and considered lens.

Reviewing Formative feedback
Making it local. Whilst i want to use design to tackle wicked problems, a great point was made in how to make your focus on contextual knowledge local.
David suggested:  Maybe your bullet points of thinking of:
Working with smaller local businesses and also working alongside or with charities that are themselves aiming to give back to the community and environment could be what you focus on as the core context.
David asked: What local businesses or charities in the environment sector do you know or have access to contact? How can you illustration and some of the material processes and choices help you help them give back?
To which I answered today.
I began jotting down every project, initiative, local businesses and charities with a focus on the environmental sector that I knew of. These were. mainly situated in Waiheke Island, Auckland and the Northern Region, New Zealand.
I found some instagram pages, and websites which were of interest.
Tumblr media
Screen shot taken on my phone. Good change. A business I came across the other day. Sparked an interest in me. Even using design to build education and knowledge around the environment, through illustrative design.
Tumblr media
Good For Store. Located in Auckland, focus on sustainable shopping - making it easy for individuals who are seeking to become a better citizen.
Notes.
Tumblr media
Using illustration as a tool to help businesses give back to the environment and the community. This then links into feeding the environment rather than degrading it. Highlighting, and making a connection to the concept of circular design. Material choices, conscious of product lifecycle - links into design.

Feedback
Feedback from my tutor David. I found this super helpful as it made me think more deeply, and gave me a different perspective.
Tumblr media
I had also added in an extra sentence at the end - haven’t got feedback on this yet. But I was reviewing my feedback, and a great way to tie everything together would be to use illustrations as a tool to help businesses give back, into the environment and community.
The sentence added
The core context of working alongside smaller local businesses and or with charities aiming to give back to the community and environment is explored.
