"California has approved a bill to help address the dark side effects of the externally glitzy fast-fashion sector, putting the onus on manufacturers to implement repair and recycling programs. 

According to CalMatters' Digital Democracy project, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed the Responsible Textile Recovery Act of 2024 on Sept. 28, more than a year after the bill began making its way through the state legislature. 

The act seeks to address the growing problem of waste from the fashion industry. CalMatters notes in its analysis that the Golden State tossed more than 1.3 million tons of textiles in 2018. 

As it stands, the state ships 45% of the items that are donated overseas, which contributes to environmental pollution, and once there, much of it still ends up in landfills, where it produces potent heat-trapping gases such as methane. 

In Ghana, for example, which has seen its beaches polluted by fast-fashion waste, 40% of the 15 million garments received each week are discarded. All in all, despite the fact that 95% of California's materials are recyclable, only 15% of clothing and textiles are reused. 

Democratic state senator Josh Newman, the bill's sponsor, told the Guardian that these concerning figures inspired him to take action.   

"We worked really hard to consult with and eventually to align all of the stakeholders in the life cycle of textiles so that at the end there was no opposition," he explained. "That's an immensely hard thing to do when you consider the magnitude of the problem and all of the very different interests."

According to the Guardian, the program is expected to go into effect in 2028, with its numerous backers anticipating it could create as many as 1,000 jobs in the Golden State. 

Details are still being hammered out. However, garment manufacturers who aren't already participating in eco-friendly programs will have incentives to adopt greener practices, with recycling collection sites and mail-back programs among the possibilities.  

And while some have worried that small businesses and mid-sized brands could be disproportionately impacted by the legislation and end up passing on the prices to consumers, Newman estimates that the cost should be less than 10 cents per garment or textile."

My friend Hashem Bader @hashem-bader's young niece was injured about a year ago, at the beginning of the war in Ghazzah. Because of the war, there were no safe conditions for her to heal in. She could not rest and recover, as she had to flee from her home. She couldn't get regular check ups by a doctor either, as doctors were overwhelmed by all the wounded, and hospitals kept being bombed.

Now, a year later, Hashem and his extended family have been able to get his niece's arm checked by a doctor. The doctor told them that the bone in her arm has welded wrong, and she will need another operation to fix it.

Not only will Hashem's niece, who is just a child, have to go through the pain and stress of an operation during a war, but she doesn't even have a safe place to stay and recover afterwards! Hashem and his family's tents were destroyed due to bombing, and now they don't have a place to live.

Hashem has been fundraising since MARCH, but he has only raised 6% of his goal! He urgently wants to reach £3,645, as his family needs that much just to survive, and to buy a tent to stay in.

Please, help Hashem and his family get what they need to survive and be safe. Help his niece get surgery, and a safe place to recover afterwards. They are all exhausted after more than a year of war. his voice gets a touch softer, a little lower so that you have to crane your neck and lean in real close to him to catch what he's saying over the bustle of the bar that you went to and the chatter of your friends that you came with. it’s like you’re in your own little universe with him, the sweet pinkish tint to his cheeks and the dilated pupils a look that you could definitely get used to- not that his usual more reserved look didn’t make your heart hammer in your chest, too.

but it's just so rare to see him like this, for him to look at you like you hung the stars in the sky, like every word that passes your lips is a prayer, whose hands furl and unfurl in his lap like he's itching to touch you (you wish he would).

it's not like he really says much, per se, instead opting to watch your every move wide-eyed and with a slackened jaw. you're growing warm under his gaze, and you stutter out that he'll really have to quit staring at you like that before you get the wrong idea. that does little to stop his actions, though he does flash you a sheepish smile.

"i'm sorry, you just look so beautiful."

it should be illegal for him to be this much of a smooth talker with that many drinks in his system. he's completely and utterly shameless, one arm rested casually against the back of your chair and his whole undivided attention on you as he throws every line he knows right at you hoping that one will land.

you'd be lying if you said that you weren't enjoying this attention from him, though there's the remaining sober part of you screaming how he's just a friend over and over, but when he dips his head low to whisper into your ear you're delighted to find that part of you audibly drown out.

everything about him is just so... tantalising. the way his silver tongue darts out to swipe across his lip, him not missing the way your eyes follow the movement. the way he leans back in his seat, the hungry yet calculating look in his eyes doing something to you. the way you see him deliberating over something before finally opening his mouth to speak.

and when he asks you if you want to get out here with him, it's only natural for you to accept his offer.

even on a good day, he's known to just talk, and talk, and talk if he gets going. that particular quality only seems to be amplified by the alcohol coursing through his system. he's been talking your ear off for the past half hour or so, a never-ending flow of words escaping his lips as he seems to he telling you just about everything that's on his mind.

you see the glances from others, the pity edging its way to concern adorning their features, but little do they know that you don't mind one bit.

while he may not be everyone's favourite to talk to, you've always found something within you compelled to sit and listen while he talks. he's always had something interesting to say, always been wary of if you are feeling tired or bored (not that you ever would be of him), and over your few encounters you've grown to be rather fond of him.

he's still talking now, an enthusiastic gleam in his eye as you smile and nod, propping your chin against your hand as you get comfy and study his features unbothered.

he sees the affectionate look on your face and stops for a moment, smiling widely and stuttering a few times before continuing.

it's something that happened once, a few months ago when you had drank with them for the first time. you had all been in a group, and you had been chatting away with your friends rather livelily (i dont think that's a word) until you promptly felt a weight against your shoulder.

your reactions are a bit sluggish, but when you do turn to see just what it could be you're surprised to see a head of hair, and your tipsy brain just about manages to realise he's slumped over, dozing off on your shoulder, much to the amusement of everyone at the table.

you find it rather funny yourself, sneaking your phone out of your pocket to snap a rather unflattering-angled photo of him (which he still manages to look good in) that you send to him the next morning (he smiled to himself as he saw your grinning face in the corner of it and saved it to his camera roll).

you don't quite have the heart to wake him up or shrug him off, so you sort of just... let him be and continue talking like nothing had happened. some nondescript amount of time later he wakes up, blinking uncertainly as he gains his surroundings, before jolting up ramrod straight and apologising to you.

you giggle, tell him it's alright and tease that he must be getting old to be asleep this early, which is met with an unimpressed look from him.

but from that night onwards, it happens a little too... often to be some chance.

every time he drinks, without fail, his head drops onto your shoulder. it's somewhat of a routine to snap a photo of him like this, to admire it in secret before sending it to him, and it's somewhat of a tradition now for him to wake up and instead send you a reserved smile before letting himself doze off on your shoulder again.

not that either of you are complaining.

Okay. I was an editor in chief for 5 years in the past, and I've been a managing editor for 6 years. I had a whole team of journalists and writers, they made interviews of people some you would die to meet, and I interviewed artists who inspired the biggest names in Hollywood, people who are hard to book.

Those buddie clowns shitting on Katey's interview of Lou, only to praise the mediocre one of Oliver (not his fault) made by Pink News, are testing my patience.

Katey's interview is very good. She chose her angle according to where the show left Lou's character. She focused on Lou's experience of this scene and moment of the show as an actor, asked about the creative process, how he felt after such an unexpected turn of events. Note that she was interviewing Lou as an actor who played Tommy on 911. It's a different approach than if he was currently still on the show.

Then you have Pink News, who interviewed Oliver. The angle is supposed to be about Buck being bisexual but the title is clear: it's about buddie. It's about a fucking fanon ship. And Oliver has to answer for the umpteenth time to "is buddie a thing?". Oh and snacks. Yeah, very important question to know about what kind of snacks Buck likes.

So on one hand, you have a journalist asking actual questions after a big twist in an important storyline (Buck's canon love life is a core storyline of the show), and on the other, you have a shipper working for a transphobic queer website asking about a fanon ship.

And you know, actually, both are fine. This is the beauty of editorial. Choose your angle and work with it. It can be fun, it can be serious. But hammering the same question over and over is not an angle, it's an obsession, and not even one you can turn into something good apparently.

"Taz! Up here!" The girl hears the familiar voice of the phoenix sorcerer and sees Daichi and Megumi on the second floor above them. She smiles, "Daichi! Megumi!"

"Yeah! We're here!" Daichi said, "We're backing you up for support. We need to take down Kong."

"But Kong is hurting!" Taz yells then she hears a caw from Eito carrying some sort of device. "Then use this! This can reset Kong back to normal. The rest needs to go down since they are made by the curse user!"

Kazuma is still cowering behind a vending machine while watching this. Taz runs over to Yuji and tells Yuji about what Daichi told her while handing him a device called the Resetter.

Kong pushes Totality off him and slams his fists against the floor. He goes after Totality while Gigan tries to swipe his sycthe claws at Nue but misses, "DUMB BIRD! HOLD STILL!" Gigan childishly said.

Daichi wonders if he can land from this height on the second floor. He has to if he has to help the three. "Damn it!" Daichi goes to jump over the railing and jumps from the second floor to the first floor. He lets out a fireball from the palm of his hand to break the fall. "OW!" Daichi sprains his leg but he will be fine. He looks towards Orga who is growling as it slowly emerges from the broken wall.

Megumi was following him towards the elevator but even if he pushes the button it was taking too long! They had to help their friends now!

"Screw it! We gotta find a staircase!" Daichi exclaimed before Eito caws, letting the flame sorcerer know that he found a staircase.

"Eito finds it! We can just..."

Along with him, Megumi heard the sudden shriek seeing Taz being in Gigan who was trying to grab her. It still laughs, swinging it's hand trying to grab her.

"Big Brother!"

"Taz!" Yuji was going to help her but he got rammed down into the ground wincing a bit while seeing Kong just holding him while now crushing him.

While Kazuma is still hiding. To which Daichi looks back and sees an animatronic coming towards Kazuma from behind. It was the animatronic that was on the camera. Oh hell no.

"Megumi! New plan!" Daichi said. "I'm going to use my fire arrow. Support Yuji and Taz with your shinigami, Nue, and Totality" He said as he went to conjure a fire arrow, "KAZUMA! DUCK AND RUN!"

"Huh?!" Kazuma turns his head and widens his eyes to see someone having a flaming arrow at him the boy ducks and runs before Daichi fires, hitting the animatronic, Orga dead center, and sending it crashing into the wall.

"WHAT THE HELL IS HAPPENING!?!" Kazuma said in shock seeing Orga now in another area with a giant hole there. That's when he saw something else flying above him. Yuji was being shocked as Kong was laughing about to break his neck before he got slammed down by Totality. Right away, Yuji coughs catching his breath.

As that happened, As soon as Gigan grabs Taz's ankle, that's when something hits them on the head to make it let go. Then it got shocked to keep away from Taz showing Nue protecting her.

"We have to support these guys from up here."

"Right!"
