This is a story about two people boldly chasing their happiness in spite of their fears, overcoming the chokehold of a difficult past, and learning how to communicate by whatever means necessary, be it rhymes or recipes.

I live for oversharing on the internet but deadass everytime I pause and reflect on this past year I'm just mind boggled by how absolutely horrendous it was.

gonna pop this under a read more if you want to know the goings on or if you want to have a break in the onslaught of everyone posting their W's to simply revel in the absolute cringe state of my life. going to even out the W to L ratio for a spell-

like ?? i mean to be fair, its not limited to 2021 or a "cursed year", the past few years have been extremely hard and getting harder- but right out the gate 2021 was just misery. Stuck working two awful jobs, one of which was social media based and exposed me to extreme levels of harassment for months and was given no protections by my employer (arguably even the opposite, we were forbidden from turning off comments) and then my other desk job had my boss suddenly do a personality 180 and go from absolutely lovely to excessively hostile without reason to the point where I had to quit.

so then i was just aimlessly floating for a while, before BOOM getting hit with rejection after rejection from grad schools, including both my dream schools in a manner that was exceptionally cold.

AND THEN- things at home popped the fuck off, and i dont want to get into too much detail publicly but we dealt with downright haunting situations involving comorbid substance abuse, borderline, and schizophrenia that again, without getting into details- was the most traumatic period i've had in my life (AND LADS i'm a CSA survivor; shit was fucked up. shit fucked me up.)

AND THEN- my ED spiralled out of control ?? to the point where a bitch got scurvy ?? ? ? in 2021 ??? followed by a cancer scare ??? AND THEN i had to move away from home, abandoning Wiggins, Tudball, and everyone who's ever given a rat's ass about me to cali in august during a 119 degree heatwave.

AND THEN the place i moved for had an atrociously hostile work environment, 80+ hour work weeks, insulting and belittling department heads that bullied at least one student out of the program already as working conditions caused my health to decline so bad I couldnt lift drinking cups. For the past 3-4 months we've had problem sets that would take 15+ hours to complete due every 48 hours every single week, on top of teaching our own classes and getting research started....while living alone for the first time and dealing with all the depression that comes with that. my BMP increased by 20 beats since october from stress.

AND THEN- i got hit with academic probation on my first quarter of grad school. now you might think "well gee those working conditions you listed above sound awful, i'm sure others were in the same boat" NO SIR- im pretty sure im one of only 2 students that were placed on probation...like cha boy went from being top of their class with a 3.99 GPA to being potentially the worst student in the cohort and a sub-3.0 GPA in grad school. girlboss behavior.

A N D T H E N- when i came home for the holidays i discovered that e v e r y s i n g l e c o s t u m e I have made in my career except for the two i took with me had been destroyed, thrown away, or damaged beyond repair while i was gone. like i can't even emphasize to all how fucked up this is hitting me. hypnos is destroyed. lif is SUPER destroyed. Joker, akechi, and aigis had most of their parts thrown away; just to name a few specifically. all of this was news to me and i only discovered it when checking on them to see what i could bring back with me. through the screen i am grabbing you by the shoulders to emphasize that every single godddamn cosplay i have made in my life save for robin and nekomancer have been made completely unwearable. this happened yesterday and i still havent even processed it tbh its just 👁👄👁

and on top of it all, like a goddamn insult cherry on an injury sundae, i watched many of my good friends get engaged or form loving happy relationships while cha boy will likely become a 25 yr old virgin soon bc i continue to struggle to develop relationships/no one irl is interested, my acne is popping tf off, i keep gaining weight for no reason, got a string of terrible haircuts, still cant seem to connect with anyone solidly in cali/have a painfully dilapidated and isolated social life with only a few acquaintances, GOT INTO TWO CAR ACCIDENTS IN ONE DAY, broke my hand during a midterm that i then failed, like!!! tell me that isnt girlboss behavior ✨💅

to conclude this internet overshare; thats the year ive had up until now. i keep thinking 2022 will be better but i also fully know that theres no reason for any of this stuff to abide by a calendar and that realistically when dec 31st becomes jan 1st its just hell and pain and misery and suffering forever actually

Let me back track this-

🕰 This blog has somehow been alive for atleast 7 months or so? I remember starting it around June 2021 somewhere on my summer break.

🖋 I do have an og blog where i post some art and is mostly for my private viewing but uh to be fair Im not so use to posting anything there-

🗓 Way too many- Starting from future interractions, events, shenanigians, scenarios. The only thing i need to prepare now is my motivation and s a n i t y.

I left this question for last cuz I would like to tell the story-

So with me being bored and trying to find new things to procastinate on- i knew tumblr and everything but never really bothered to download or check it out until uh- out or morbid curiosity(fanfics-) that i decided to finally try.

I found pin's VALE blog cuz i d v and was interested in first. I said nothing in there til-

Oh but i didnt stop there- I enjoyed it til the point I wanna join in the fun front row seat. So I did a Trickster blog. Cuz og aesop aint gonna fit my ideals of a b s o l u t e wreakage.

Ironically x2 this blog was suppose to just be a troll and the reason why Isopu has glasses in the old version of my lore writing is cuz he is the type to scroll thru his phone for hours on end til atleast 3 am at night while the room is dark til the point youd get paranoia.

Yeah u can clearly tell I scrap that idea and gave him an entire lore of what I think happened in the CoA story minus the fact he died originally before I committed to this blog and had to tweek it abit.

Funfact: instead of this mfker living and has glasses with immense trauma. He dies with Tracy (Yoasobi-夜に駆け)-style into the abyss cus I ship them thank you-

I wasnt thinking to even commit to this blog and was expecting myself to sudden dissappear but here we are-

Besides that i also started kidnapping wick and pretty much caused a small uproar. Though idk if small is an understatement but-- thats up to the others ^^

So I guess you can say my inspiration was my drive to end everyones career and sanity along with the fun I had with Pins and everyone else uwu

Keep in mind I was pretty new to these commitments on askblogs and tumblr in general so i didnt know anyone then and that if I crossed any boundaries and made ppl uncomfy qwq

But I learned to get used to it uwu so thx to everyone who has been with me for awhile and dealt with my craziness XD

The Democrats’ draft spending bill still includes huge changes to the nation’s migration laws, even after the Senate’s parliamentarian removed several amnesties from the multi-trillion dollar spending bill.

The bill would dramatically push up housing prices by expanding the inflow of chain migrants, and also would slash white-collar salaries by creating a new and uncapped migration category of college-educated workers for a huge variety of Fortune 500 jobs from coast to coast.

Together, both migration rules will transfer wages and wealth from employees to coastal investors, and will also shift corporate investment, real estate wealth, government spending, and political power from heartland states — such as Ohio, Montana, West Virginia, and Arizona — to the major coastal states of California and New York.

But the parliamentarian’s decision to exclude the amnesties from the bill may prompt Democratic leaders to drop the uncapped white-collar giveaway for the Fortune 500 companies and their investors.

“If we’re talking about getting [white-collar] visas so we can take care of businesses’ problems, I’m not supportive — in the absence of getting anything else done,” Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ) told Bloomberg Government.

Sen. Dick Durbin (D-IL) also suggested that he might oppose the white-collar giveaway to the Fortune 500 if Democrats do not get their amnesties and new voters. “Bob [Menendez] and I have the same goal, which is to get as many people as possible on a path to citizenship,” he told Bloomberg.

However, Democrat leaders still want to turbocharge the chain migration process, even without the amnesties, Menendez indicated. “If we’re talking about recapturing visas for family backlogs … I certainly would consider that,” even without the amnesties, Menendez said.

For many years, Democrats have blocked business efforts to import more white-collar workers unless business leaders help them win more voters from amnesties. In January, for example, Menendez said, “we need the high-tech community who will benefit from the reforms we are proposing, to be an advocate of the overall [amnesty] reform movement.”

But “the chain migration [expansion] is something that is supported by the same left-wing activist community as the [excluded] amnesty, and so, as long as they get the chain migration, then the activist left will consider it a fair deal if the business community getting uncapped foreign workers,” former White House advisor Steven Miller told Breitbart News.

The underlying bargain– more cheap workers and consumers for the Fortune 500 in exchange for more poor voters for the Democrats — is cementing the strategic alliance between the progressives who run the Democratic Party and the corporate investors who run the Fortune 500, said Miller:

There’s a progressive-corporate alliance that has been forged inside of the Democratic Party and nowhere can it be seen more clearly than on migration and the current reconciliation bill. The progressive left wants unlimited chain migration and the corporate donors and lobbyists want uncapped foreign workers. The reconciliation bill delivers both. And if they’re also able to get an amnesty from the parliamentarian, which I fear they will be able to do in some form, then that will just further cement the alliance between powerful progressive and powerful corporations.

The Fortune 500 giveaway will allow companies to recruit an unlimited number of foreign graduates with dangled promises of green cards and citizenship, said Rob Law, the director of regulatory affairs and policy at the Center for Immigration Studies. “It will be the equivalent of having unlimited legal immigration for [foreign] college graduates,” he said.

The plan rewards the investor-run corporations that already use the green card workforce of at least one million imported H-1B, J-1, L-1, and OPT workers to drop white-collar salaries. The cheap and compliant workforce also excludes many outspoken American graduates from rewarding careers in healthcare, business, technology, design, or science.

Law continued:

These are the companies that have intentionally discriminated against American workers, have subjected American workers to training their unqualified foreign replacements as a condition of getting severance packages, and, and now it is going to be a permanent loop where they will have as many cheap foreign workers — with at least a college degree — as they want, and that will just further suppress wages.

Both of the huge immigration changes have been ignored by the establishment press, partly because their immigration reporters prefer to cover the fears and hopes of Haitians as they try to move from home in South America to jobs throughout the United States.

The proposed changes have been ignored by journalists even though they will damage the income and status of journalists — and of their friends and peers. With lower income and status, fewer journalists will be able to buy good homes and get their children into high-status universities.

The journalists have also failed to quiz critical swing-vote Democrats about the migration changes that would divert investments and jobs away from their homes states. So far, Sen. Joe Manchin (D-WV), Krysten Sinema (D-AZ), Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ), Sen. Jon Tester (D-MT), and Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH) have said little or nothing about the chain migration change or the white-collar indentured worker rule.

GOP leaders have also not challenged these proposed changes as violations of the Senate’s debating rules, even though both changes will damage GOP electoral support, and redirect wealth and political power from GOP-run states to Democrat-run coastal states.

GOP leaders have persuaded the Senate’s debate referee, the parliamentarian, to dismiss the Democrats’ proposed amnesties as policy changes disguised as budget changes. “The policy changes of this proposal far outweigh the budgetary impact scored to it and it is not appropriate for inclusion in reconciliation,” the parliamentarian wrote.

The amnesties are a direct threat to the jobs of GOP Senators because they would create many new Democratic voters.

But the silence about the chan migration plan and the white-collar giveaway reflects the reluctance of GOP legislators to protect Americans’ popular pocketbook interests amid donor demands for more migrants.

For example, on Wednesday, 34 House Republicans and 14 GOP Senators stayed silent as GOP leader Mitch McConnell approved a massive, expensive, and open-ended inflow of Afghans into Americans’ homes and jobs. The Senators were:

In September, Breitbart News described the still;-hidden chain migration expansion in the spending bill:

The Democrats’ amnesty bill quietly invites three million chain migration arrivals into the U.S. workforce, likely forcing Americans to pay higher rents.

“It’s a huge deal,” said Jessica Vaughan, the director of policy studies at the Center for Immigration Studies.

About four million people are now waiting many years to get one of the roughly 240,000 cards annually available for the foreign siblings and adult children of legal immigrants. The new bill would allow them to “Early File’” for conditional residency and work permits if they have been waiting for more than two years and can also fly into the United States.

…

The amnesty’s offer of residency to the 3 million chain migration migrants likely could create an additional inflow of 1 million per year — and an extra shortfall of roughly 800,000 apartments or homes.

Many states’ residents are already suffering from high housing costs. For example, several low-income Americans and immigrants died in early September when a storm flooded their affordable basement apartments in New York.

Breitbart has also described the bill’s plan to flood the job market for U.S. graduates with a massive supply of foreign graduates who will work for low wages plus the promise of U.S. citizenship for themselves and their families:

Democrat leaders “are blowing away all the numerical limits” on employers offering green cards to [college graduate] employees, said Rosemary Jenks, policy director for NumbersUSA. “There’s no limit anywhere.”

The pending bill would allow U.S. investors and executives to import and pay an unlimited number of foreign workers with the dangled reward of citizenship. That citizenship-for-work law would minimize executives’ need to recruit Americans or even offer good salaries.

The bill was revealed Friday, and on Monday, was quickly rushed through the House judiciary committee without C-SPAN coverage. Mark Zuckerberg’s astroturf empire is marketing it as a relief bill for deserving illegal migrants — but it boosts investors by dramatically expanding the flow of cheap workers, government-funded consumers, and room-sharing renters into the U.S. economy. Democrat leaders hope to squeeze the bill through the Senate via the 50-vote reconciliation process.

The expanded foreign worker pipeline will remain open until at least September 2031, even though many millions of Americans will need jobs during the next ten years after they graduate with debts and degrees in health care, accounting, teaching, business, design, science, technology, or engineering. “If you’re in the pipeline by September 30, 2031, you’re in [the 2021 amnesty bill],” Jenks added.

The push for cheap workers and more chain migration is being led by Mark Zuckerberg’s FWD.us network of coastal investors. They stand to gain financially from more cheap labor, government-aided consumers, and urban renters.

Their network has funded many astroturf campaigns, urged Democrats to not talk about the economic impact of migration, and manipulated coverage by the TV networks and the print media.

Migration is deeply unpopular because it damages ordinary Americans’ career opportunities, cuts their wages, raises their rents, curbs their productivity, shrinks their political clout, widens regional wealth gaps, and wrecks their democratic, equality-promoting civic culture.

For many years, a wide variety of pollsters have shown deep and broad opposition to labor migration and the inflow of temporary contract workers into jobs sought by young U.S. graduates.

This pocketbook opposition is multiracial, cross-sex, non-racist, class-based, bipartisan, rational, persistent, and recognizes the solidarity Americans owe to each other.

As escenificacións de Bill Brandt no novo centro KBr de Mapfre

Son tempos de pandemia. Meses de peche social, de negritude cultural. E neste panorama de penuria a Fundación Mapfre fai o importante esforzo de abrir un novo centro cultural e artístico: KBr. Barcelona Photo Center. Unha cancela ao mar por onde entrarán frescas e atractivas propostas relacionadas co mundo da fotografía. E para inaugurar o KBr, Carlos Gollonet e compañía inzan as salas con dúas fantásticas exposicións: unha de Bill Brandt e outra de Paul Strand. Tres regalos deliciosos e benvidos.

KBr. Barcelona Photo Center

KBr es el símbolo químico del bromuro de potasio, una sal que se utiliza en el proceso de revelado de la fotografía analógica. KBr está situado en uno de los edificios más representativos de la Barcelona contemporánea: la Torre MAPFRE. Al pie de este icónico edificio, sobre la Avenida del Litoral y el paseo marítimo se proyectan las formas curvilíneas del edificio que acoge las salas del KBr: un total de 1.400m2 en dos plantas: dos salas expositivas, un espacio para actividades educativas, una sala polivalente para convocatorias con público y una librería especializada en fotografía.

Nos últimos cinco anos a Fundación MAPFRE, desde a histórica casa Garriga Nogués, fíxose cun espazo punteiro na programación artística da cidade de Barcelona. Neste lapso de tempo, e da man do seu coordinador Ignacio González Casasnovas, as salas vestíronse con moitas das mellores creacións da arte, desde mediados do século XIX ata hoxe. O resultado da actividade expositiva destes anos son 14 exposicións e máis de 500.000 visitantes en total. Todo iso dentro dun ambiente de recesión e crise no mundo artístico da cidade de Barcelona. Hai cousa dun ano o escritor e crítico Sergi Vila-Sanjuán publicou no xornal La Vanguardia o artigo ¿Qué pasa en el mundo del arte barcelonés?, análise no que aportaba os elementos principais ao seu entender para explicar a actual situación (traballo reseñado anteriormente). Ao pesimismo dos últimos anos hai que engadir o confinamento, o medo social, provocado pola pandemia.

E no medio deste escuro panorama, a Fundación Mapfre abre un novo centro cultural na Vila Olímpica de Barcelona. De paso aproveita para dar un xiro á súa presencia cultural nesta cidade, e inaugura, na emblemática Torre Mapfre, o KBr. Barcelona Photo Center, un magnífico espazo sito nas beiras do mar. KBr conta con dúas salas de exposicións: a grande, de 700 m2, e a pequena con 150; e, na planta baixa, un espazo para actividades educativas, unha sala polivalente para convocatorias con público e a libraría especializada en fotografía que instala Juan Naranjo, historiador da fotografía e comisario independente. Nestes intres esta libraría é posiblemente a única da cidade dedicada ao libro de fotografía. O KBr busca integrarse no tecido cultural barcelonés por medio da colaboración con entidades dedicadas a esta arte (Foto Colectania, por exemplo) ou que teñan importantes arquivos, como o MNAC; así como a través da colaboración coas universidades. A Fundación Mapfre, desde o KBr creará tamén un premio de fotografía, un gran atractivo para profesionais e estudantes de fotografía.

Bill Brandt: The English at Home, A Night in London. Entre Dickens e Hogarth, da man de Atget e Brassaï.

I had the good fortune to start my career in Paris in 1929. For any young photographer at that time, Paris was the centre of the world. Those were the exciting early days when the French poets and surrealists recognised the possibilities of photography. There were the surrealist films such as Bunuel's notorious “Le Chien Andalou” and “L'Age d' Or”, which had a strong effect on photography. One could say that it was now that modern photography was born.

O novo espazo dedicado á fotografía, KBr. Barcelona Photo Center da Fundación MAPFRE, abre as súas portas á cidadanía de Barcelona con dúas exposicións, a cada cal máis importante e interesante. Na sala pequena a mostra dedicada a Strand, mentres que a grande está inzada coas instantáneas de Bill Brandt. En total a mostra de Brandt ofrece á cidadanía unhas 186 fotografías, en branco e negro, que teñen o valor engadido de seren copias positivadas polo propio fotógrafo, segundo as súas preferencias estéticas e técnicas, e que abranguen máis de 50 anos de duro traballo dun dos fotógrafos que, na actualidade, está considerado como o fotógrafo máis importante da Gran Bretaña e un dos que máis innovou a fotografía do século XX, a carón de Cartier Bresson ou Walker Evans. Neste vídeo é doado ter imaxes da ampla mostra. As copias executadas polo propio Brandt proveñen do importante arquivo do fotógrafo: Bill Brandt Archive, sito en Londres, e mais da Edwynn Houk Gallery, de New York. A mostra está producida pola Fundación Mapfre e a comezos de 2021 abandona Barcelona para ser presentada no Kunstfoyer Versicherungskammer Kulturstiftung, de Múnich; no próximo verán estará nos espazos da Fundación MAPFRE de Madrid, e rematará o seu periplo no FOAM de Ámsterdam.

O comisario da exposición, Ramón Esparza (doutor en Ciencias da Comunicación e profesor de Comunicación Audiovisual, e fotógrafo), no seu artigo no magnífico catálogo que publica Mapfre insiste que a fotografía de Brandt escora polo que Freud denominou o unheimlich, termo alemán habitualmente traducido como “o estraño”, “aquilo que produce inquietude”. Unheimlich que –moi na liña do surrealismo-- entra (aínda que sexa como escarnio) dentro da esfera do que é estético.

Co gallo desta grande exposición, a Fundación Mapfre publica un magnífico catálogo con interesantes textos e a reprodución de todas as fotografías cunha calidade excelente. Nas salas do KBr. Barcelona Photo Center tamén é doado visionar o vídeo da BBC sobre este fotógrafo; máis de media hora de parladoiro co artista. Un pracer escoitar a Bill Brandt da súa profesión, das súas instantáneas e dos seus intereses fotográficos.

Bill Brandt, de orixe alemán, de contado vai vivir a Inglaterra e fará todo o posible por borrar as pegadas da súa ascendencia xermana e mais por integrarse totalmente na sociedade inglesa. Neses vieiros de integración na vida británica é onde hai que situar os seus primeiros libros de fotografías: The English at Home (1936) e A Night in London (1938). Estes traballos foron elaborados despois de vir de París, onde estivo (Brandt tamén!!) de axudante no estudo de Man Ray e puido coñecer á pléiade de artistas surrealistas. Que tiña o estudo de Ray para que tantas persoas pasasen por alí? Por que deixou tanta pegada neles? Contaba moito a “moda” do surrealismo ou áinda máis a personalidade do fotógrafo? Cómpre lembrar que por alí pasaron, entre outras, a fotógrafa británica e surrealista Lee Miller e mais a norteamericana Berenice Abbott, a rescatadora dos traballos de Atget.

Xa decidido a ser británico, Brandt percorre a illa e vai retratando tipos e situacións sociais contrapostas. As instantáneas de The English at Home xogan moito coa contraposición persoa rica/persoa pobre, barrio burgués/barrio proletario. Deste xeito as fotografías van das carreiras de cabalos onde se divirten as boas familias ás vilas mineiras (e á súa miseria) do norte da illa. Neste libro semella que Brandt vai da man de Dickens e das súas radiografías literarias decimonónicas. Ou que camiña parello ás pinturas de Hogarth, aínda que sen a súa intencionalidade de crítica social. Xa neste traballo está claro que un dos atractivos para Brandt é crear escenografías. Escenografías aproveitadas a fío para provocar o insólito, o inusual (unheimlich), tal e como xa aprendera dos surrealistas. Aproveita a foto das criadas (Parlourmaid) a punto de servir a cea nunha casa de alta burguesía para elaborar toda unha posta en escena: un retrato sociolóxico que percorre mesas, persoas e ata as magníficas pinturas que colgan das paredes. Igual fai cunha situación cotiá dentro do pub Charley Brown. Para Brandt é fundamental o ambiente; nin nos retratos reducirá a instantánea á persoa seleccionada para o retrato.

O segundo libro A Night in London vén sendo a propia homenaxe de Brandt a fotógrafos predecesores, como é o caso de Atget, cando se pon a fotografar o París nocturno (París); rúas e prazas sen xentes. Ao tempo tamén é unha competencia con traballos coetáneos e paralelos. Brassaï publicara –tamén no ronsel de Atget-- Paris de nuit (1930), e xa o mesmo título convida a coñecer as inspiracións de Brandt. Polo mesmos tempos Berenice Abbott (Changing New York, 1939) está a facer exactamente o mesmo coas mutacións da cidade de New York. E posteriormente William Klein fará outro tanto co seu libro New York (1956). Por citar algún exemplo máis: Moriyama acabará por facer o propio con Tokio, ou o caso de Michals que volve polos derroteiros de Atget ao titular o seu libro Empty New York, con imaxes que son fieis ao título. No libro A Night in London volve lucir Brandt a súa facilidade para procurar esas escenas onde moitas veces unha persoa é simplemente unha marca, un referente de escalas: un bobby a penas visible nunha calexa.

Sempre a Poesía. Escenificacións e poetas. Estética e estática.

Say this city has ten million souls, / Some are living in mansions, some are living in holes: / Yet there's no place for us, my dear, yet there's no place for us. /Once we had a country and we thought it fair, / Look in the atlas and you'll find it there: / We cannot go there now, my dear, we cannot go there now. / In the village churchyard there grows an old yew, / Every spring it blossoms anew: / Old passports can't do that, my dear, old passports can't do that. Na súa deriva británica, este fotógrafo que nunca quixo recoñecer as súas orixes xermánicas, e que mantivo á mantenta o segredo sobre as súas procedencias (chegando a inventarse filiacións), Brandt faise amigo de moitos escritores británicos, mormente poetas. Así nos anos 40 relaciónase co poeta galés Dylan Thomas e mais con W. H. Auden (denominado tamén o enfant terrible da literatura modernista británica). Auden exerce tanta influencia a través da forza dos seus poemas (nos que expresa as súas opinións políticas, revolucionarias e esquerdistas) que os poetas do seu tempo son coñecidos como a “Xeración Auden”.

Paralelamente a ese traballo literario, Brandt elabora outra das súas fasquías creadoras: os retratos. Os retratos de Brandt son, para a época, diferentes, directos, expresionistas, quizais como a poesía de Auden. Non retrata ás persoas nun estudo ao uso (como era habitual, con fondos debuxados e exóticos) senón que procura disparar as instantáneas sobre a persoa na propia casa do retratado, en cuartos normais, cos mobles que alí están. E vai procurando captar o fondo da persoa, que a fotografía mostre parte da psicoloxía do personaxe, mirando de dar pistas do seu pasado e futuro. Un Stanislawski fotográfico? O propio fotógrafo exprésao así en A Statement, o seu ben coñecido ensaio: I always take portraits in my sitter's own surroundings. I concentrate very much on the picture as a whole and leave the sitter rather to himself. I hardly talk and barely look at him. This often seems to make people forget what is going on and any affected or self-conscious expression usually disappears. I try to avoid the fleeting expression and vivacity of a snapshot. A composed expression seems to have a more profound likeness. I think a good portrait ought to tell something of the subject's past and suggest something of his future.

Despois de pasar a II Guerra Mundial e de ter feito para o goberno británico reportaxes sobre o que chamaban o Home Front (a vida cotiá na illa perante a guerra e os bombardeos), acabou por xuntar algunhas desas instantáneas no libro Camera in London (1948). Arrepían as imaxes das estacións do metro londiniense abarrotadas de persoas durmindo no chan para fuxir dos bombardeos alemáns (quen di, en tales circunstancias, que é alemán? O poeta Auden casou, por conveniencia con Erika Mann, a filla do novelista Thomas Mann, para que ela puidese fuxir dos nazis).

Nas súas galerías de retratos, máis aló de pretender a psicoloxía da persoa retratada, Brandt facía algo inusual tamén para a época: crear escenografías. En moitos, moitos casos, a persoa retratada, por moi famosa que fose, aparece nun recuncho da foto, escorada, ou ao fondo, mergullada en arquitecturas e espazos amplos. Un exemplo é o retrato que lle fai á escultora Hepworth, ou a Henri Moore, ambos dominados polas súas propias creacións artísticas. Pero un dos casos máis especiais e paradigmáticos dos seus retratos é o que lle fai ao pintor Francis Bacon en 1963. O pintor amosa en primeiro plano pero moi á esquerda da imaxe, sen espazo para mostrar o corpo enteiro do artista. Evidentemente ese retrato está moi descompensado: a persoa no recanto esquerdo e o resto da fotografía, paisaxe. Paisaxe casual? Que indica o camiño da dereita? E todo o espazo que enche a fotografía? Se a persoa está tan en primeiro plano, é por que pesa moito o que deixa atrás, o xa vivido? Non ten Bacon futuro? O seu futuro está no seu ollar, é unha interrogante?

Nos seus retratos –como noutros motivos-- Brandt demostra que sempre está a procurar camiños novos, vieiros aínda non andados. E que a súa fotografía bascula con toda a elegancia entre o estético, a necesidade de xogar no fío da navalla do unheimlich: provocación sensorial bebida do surrealismo parisiense, e o estatismo de todo o que capta coas súas cámaras. Neste senso, Brandt afirmou que non concordaba con Certier-Bresson, que non lle interesaba o intre decisivo. Tal vez por iso, tamén, Brandt non figura como fotorreporteiro.

No caso extremo, Brandt aínda creou outros retratos máis especiais: fotografar ollos, un só ollo de cada persoa. Pero non ollo de calquera, ollo de persoas que viron os outros mundos que hai neste, que representaron outras realidades. Por exemplo o ollo de Braque, de Moore, de Tàpies, Arp, Giacometti, Dubuffet...

If I think a picture will look better brilliantly lit, I use lights, or even flash. It is the result that counts, no matter how it was achieved. I find the darkroom work most important, as I can finish the composition of a picture only under the enlarger. I do not understand why this is supposed to interfere with the truth. Photographers should follow their own judgment, and not the fads and dictates of others. Photography is still a very new medium and everything is allowed and everything should be tried. And there are certainly no rules about the printing of a picture

Segundo as persoas que se interesaron por estudar a vida profesional de Brandt, este fotógrafo foi percorrendo e exercitando, ao longo da súa vida, os grandes temas da fotografía. Non faltan nel as instantáneas sobre cuestións sociais, verbo as condicións de vida das familias mineiras do norte de Inglaterra, nin tampouco o retrato, xa citado. Logo dedicou a súa atención ás paisaxes, coa súa mirada especial e diseccionadora. As paisaxes, en branco e negro, rurais e urbanas, volven insistir na elaboracións de escenificacións: un río que deseña meandros claros sobre a escuridade circundante, a muralla romana de Adriano como unha ferida histórica que se perde no fondo da paisaxe.

E por último, tamén virou os seus intereses e obxectivos fotográficos cara os nus. Os nus femininos. Na lingua inglesa hai un clara diferenciación entre o emprego da verba nude e mais a verba naked, distinción que noutros idiomas non se dá. Varios autores escribiron e falaron sobre este particular, por exemplo Keneth Clark ou John Berger. Este último, no seu traballo Ways of Seeing dixo: To be naked is to be oneself. To be nude is to be seen by others and yet not recognized for oneself. A naked body has to be seen as an object in order to become a nude. (The sight of it as an object stimulates the use of it as an object). Nakedness reveals itself. Nudity is placed on display. Resumindo os sentidos sociais e incluso técnicos das dúas palabras pódese concluír que naked é empregada para falar dun corpo humano (ou da imaxe do mesmo) que se mostra sen roupa, mentres que nude devén para referirse a aquel corpo que é presentado con finalidades estéticas. Como se en galego se decidise facer o distingo entre espido (parello a naked) e nu (nude). E todo isto relativizado polo punto de vista subxectivo de cadaquén. Os nus de Tiziano ou Ingres seguen a ser nude en todos os casos? E Les Demoiselles d’Avignon, tamén? Os propios amigos vangardistas de Picasso dixeron, cando lles mostrou esa pintura en 1907, que sentiron vascas ante as deformacións do que se tiña polo sacrosanto canon estético universal. O canon, evidentemente, do nu feminino. Arrincando desta perspectiva o cartel denunciador das Guerrilla Girls ten aínda máis significacións. Elas, a carón da Gran Odalisca de Ingres non escriben nude (como con seguridade foi a intencionalidade do pintor neoclásico francés) imprimen, pola contra, Do have to be naked..., coa conseguinte denuncia. Denuncia que segue a ter total vixencia. Moitos autores, entre eles o finado John Berger, concluíron que, na arte, o home (suxeito activo) ten o rol de gozador do corpo feminino, mentres que a muller está para ser vista (ser pasivo) nunha pintura, fotografía, escultura, ...

Neste contexto Brandt comeza a facer nudes desde o final da II Guerra Mundial. Nudes femininos, por suposto. O que acontece con estes traballos de Brandt é que non deixa de ter nos miolos as súas querenzas surrealistas polas escenificacións inusitadas. Nin as pegadas que o cinema vai deixando na fotografía artística. O propio Brandt recoñece a influencia dos filmes de Buñuel, por exemplo. Outro gran tema para reflexionar: o cinema de Hitchcock ou Wells condicionaron as miradas das/os fotógrafos? E xa postos, fixeron o mesmo coa pintura e a escultura? As interaccións mutuas das artes entre si. Os nudes de Brandt son un exemplo fantástico desas interrelacións.

A obra Nude. Micheldever, Hampshire, 1948, con ese brazo dereito estendido cara o fotógrafo –afastando así á modelo, e provocando un xogo poderoso de espazos e referencias temporais (reloxo)--, non devén escultórico? Non é evidente o paralelismo con pinturas de Tarsila do Amaral? Tamén Brandt está a xogar coa Antropofagia? Brandt aproveita estes retratos de corpos femininos nus para crear xogos de espazos, distorsións dos cuartos, afastamentos de anatomías. É dicir, potentes escenografías. O propio fotógrafo confesou que daquela atopara unha vella cámara Kodak con obxectivo gran angular que lle permitía eses xogos tan atractivos para el. Non se trata de mostrar un corpo, nin na súa totalidade, nin nas poses habituais. Non seus nudes abundan imaxes de pernas (só pernas) que se eternizan cara o fondo infinito da sala, a planta duns pés nun cuarto inmenso e ameazadoramente baleiro (espido?). Nudes que o fotógrafo retrata no seu propio domicilio, sen botar man de escenarios artificiais. A escenificación é a propia composición do corpo nun espazo.

Por outra parte, Brandt foi amigo de Barbara Hepworth e mais de Henri Moore, os dous grandes escultores ingleses do século XX. E as formas orgánicas dun e doutra, das reclining figure do segundo, levaron a Brandt a procurar coa súa cámara pedras e formas minerais nas praias que se asemellasen ás elaboracións escultóricas dos citados artistas. Así, a partir de finais dos anos 50 e posteriores, van xurdindo outros nudes en clara competición coas formas arredondadas dos pelouros que vai atopando nas praias de Normandía e mais no sur da Gran Bretaña. Tal é o caso da instantánea Nude. Baie des Anges, France, 1959 na que Brandt só escolle as mans entrelazadas para situalas por riba dos pelouros da praia. Eses dedos das mans constitúen por si propios unha escultura. De esta foto ten dito o fotógrafo que é unha das que máis lle agradan de todas as que fixo ao longo de máis de cinco décadas. Nos mesmos anos que Brandt andaba á procura de pelouros polas praias, facían o mesmo outros artistas, moitos (por non dicir todos) relacionados con surrealismo. É o caso do gran Yves Tanguy e a lembranza das praias de Bretaña da súa infancia; en paralelo Àngel Ferrant facía o propio nas praias de Galicia, ou Joan Miró andaba á recolleita de canto obxecto podía brindarlle novas perspectivas creativas.

Os nudes de Brandt pódense entender como homenaxes ás outras artes? Agochar non agocha as súas influencias, nin preferencias.
