A small, seemingly unremarkable fern that only grows on a remote Pacific island was on Friday crowned the Guinness World Record holder for having the largest genome of any organism on Earth.
The New Caledonian fern, Tmesipteris oblanceolata, has more than 50 times more DNA packed into the nucleus of its cells than humans do.
If the DNA from one of the fern's cells -- which are just a fraction of a millimeter wide -- were unraveled, it would stretch out to 106 meters (350 feet), scientists said in a new study.
Stood upright, the DNA would be taller than the tower that holds London's famous Big Ben bell.
The fern's genome weighed in at a whopping 160 gigabase pairs (Gbp), the measurement for DNA length.
That is seven percent larger than the previous record holder, the Japanese flowering plant Paris japonica.

Personal work inspired by greatest writer ever aka Ursula K. Le Guin's short story Winter's King. You can find it in The Wind's Twelve Quarters, it's set in the same world as The Left Hand of Darkness and it's... well, brilliant, like pretty much all her writing.
“Thus, although the best known picture is that dark image of a young king standing above an old king who lies dead in a corridor lit only by mirror-reflections of a burning city, set it aside for a while.”
And then, as she often does, proceeds to break your heart.
At first, I wanted to make 3-4 illustrations for this story, but found a way to put all scenes into a single piece. And I believe that actually works better, given the cyclic nature of the story.
I'm not done illustrating Gethen. Genly Ai and Therem Harth rem ir Estraven: you are next. Once I finish the commissions I'm working on and have the time and energy for personal art, that is.

[From GWS.com] JUJUTSU KAISEN is officially the world’s most in-demand animated TV show, taking the title from Attack on Titan which held it since 2020.
According to data-science firm Parrot Analytics, JUJUTSU KAISEN has a global demand rating 71.2 times greater than that of the average TV show.
Parrot Analytics calculates ‘demand’ based on how much attention, engagement, desire, and viewership is expressed by consumers for content.
Their system captures billions of new data points each day, including video consumption (streaming and downloads), social media engagement (hashtags, likes, shares), and research actions (reading about a show on IMDb, for example).
Actions which require more effort on the consumer’s part, such as watching or downloading a show, are weighed more heavily when calculating demand.
Based on Gege Akutami's manga series of the same name, JUJUTSU KAISEN follows the story of high school student Yuji Itadori, who joins a group of Jujutsu Sorcerers to defeat a Curse named Sukuna, of whom Yuji becomes the host.
The anime fought off close competitors One Piece and Attack on Titan to claim the top spot in 2023’s rankings.
One Piece enjoyed a boost in interest due to the release of Netflix’s live-action adaptation, which brought in new fans to the series as well as inspired older fans to rewatch earlier episodes.
Attack on Titan, which concluded its final season in November, remained immensely popular but narrowly lost out this time.
Side note: Congratulations to Akutami sensei and MAPPA animators who made this possible 👏🏼

Christopher Wiggins at The Advocate:
Organizers of a drag queen story time at the National Constitution Center in Philadelphia report that several hundred attendees helped set a world record for attendance at such an event, marking the start of Pride Month in the birthplace of America.

The drag performers entertained both adults and children with readings from books including Hello, Philadelphia! by Martha Day Zschock, ’Twas the Night Before Pride by Joanna McClintick, Elmer by David McKee, The Family Book by Todd Parr, and Kevin the Unicorn: It’s Not All Rainbows by Jessika von Innerebner.

Irv Gordon held the Guinness World Record holder for most miles driven by a single owner of a noncommercial vehicle. At the time of his passing, he had driven 3.2 million miles, 5149900,8 kilometres. on his 1966 Volvo P1800S.
He purchased the vehicle new in 1966 for $4150. He had a 125-mile daily commute, and his advice was to have a proper routine maintenance schedule.
Gordon proved that if you develop a good maintenance schedule and stay informed, you can keep your car going for a long time. Preventative maintenance and high-quality components will always be cheaper than a breakdown.
