Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes
Postcard from Germany The Saalfeld Fairy Grottoes (in German: Saalfelder Feengrotten) are caverns or grottoes of a former mine near Saalfeld, in the German state of Thuringia. They have long been famous for their countless colorful mineral formations (speleothems) formed over many years by water dripping through relatively soft rock. Since 1993, the Guinness Book of World Records has termed…

It takes Steve a while to adjust to moving out.
He’d always been a naturally quiet person under all the King Steve bluster, happy to curl up with Billy in front of Golden Girls instead of going out. That steady silence was one of Billy’s favourite traits about his boyfriend, the blanket of calm he always seemed to bring into any room he entered. Unfortunately that also meant that Steve sometimes struggles with talking full stop.
It was a sleepy one bedroom apartment in a quiet neighbourhood that was friendly to Jess, Billy’s Australian Shepard. Steve loved it because it had a view of the sea. He’d never seen the beach in person before, just photos on glossy postcards his dad would send him whenever he had to go on a business trip to Portugal. Billy loved it because nobody gave a shit about him lighting up a blunt at 3AM when his anxiety started crawling up his chest and down his back.
In theory it was perfect. Absolutely perfect. It didn’t matter though. It was still a big change. And Steve was restless.
Tossing and turning every night, biting his nails down to the pit, he’d even picked up smoking again. They both knew it was just teething pains. Steve would be absolutely fine in a month. But they also both knew that Steve wouldn’t really feel better until he talked about it.
The conversation finally came up on a Friday. Steve had been even more agitated than usual, wringing his hands and clinging to Jess like his life depended on it. He started violently when Billy finally tapped him on the shoulder, asking him what was wrong for Christs sake pretty boy.
Then Steve folded like a house of cards.
He thought there was something wrong with him for not being able to enjoy this. He was bratty. Spoiled. Ungrateful. Especially since Billy had grown up taking so much shit from his home life but Steve couldn’t even deal with moving states.
All Billy could really do in response was kiss him and tell Steve it was going to be ok. It wasn’t his fault that he struggled with change. It certainly wasn’t his fault that Billy had been brought up under Neil. It was just adjusting. Nothing more.
He got the legendary Harrington gooey eyes in response and knew everything was going to be ok.
And waking up to his boyfriend laughing in the kitchen with pancake batter all over his face just confirmed it further.
For @dragonflylady77 I hope you like it Guin ❤️❤️❤️

fanfic: imposter syndrome (mikkeneko): i might have already linked it but i can't be assed to go back through a few weeks of tuesdaypost to see if i already have. so if i did, here it is again. really charming premise, gut-punch of an ending, cool twist on the doppelganger setup from dungeon meshi with svsss.
the articles, some of which were actually read a while ago but i forgot to link and am now cleaning out my phone tabs: how will the golden age of 'making it worse' end? (david roth) new canada policy lets indigenous people reclaim their names (emma bowman) what happens to the stay-at-home girlfriend after a breakup? (erika w smith) unschooling is the parenting trend that's pissing everyone off (ej dickson) in defense of 'coffee badging' (monica torres): if i had a job that was all zoom calls i would literally go insane over being made to go into an office to take zoom calls. fuck that what my mother's wardrobe taught me about style and grief after she died: thinking a lot about all my dad's shit will semen destroy your shower drain? granny davis' geocaching page: found when i was looking at some reviews for caches near my apartment. im kind of obsessed with her. she also has a facebook page called 'granny's geo page' if you don't have a geocaching account. literally she is everything to me. she has found So Many fucking geocaches good god. wedding trivia questions: used as reference to create some wedding trivia for a bridal shower! similarly, the wikipedia page for morganatic marriages my fight with a sidewalk robot (emily ackerman): my school has these. hate them. my boyfriend just linked this to me and im obsessed, laser etched paperweights, i am not a huge paperweight girlie but wowwww prettyyyyy. the electron orbitals!!!! i had a search open for "anti mega #1 cray street". i have no idea what this is.

youtube
playing: a teeny bit of wizard101
making: fallow. well i guess i drew on some cards for my friend's bridal shower. but generally fallow.
eating: made deb smittenkitchen's delicious carrot cake recipe. mine was a little ugly but really really delicious. i bought a bag of preshredded carrots and just sort of roughly chopped em up a little smaller because i couldn't be assed to grate them. i also couldn't be assed to trim the cakes, i did two smaller round pans and stacked them up but because i didn't trim them they were a little wibbly. oh well.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
i'm going to bake another cake for my brother's birthday next weekend and i'm between her chocolate olive oil cake (looks really easy) and bittersweet chocolate and pear cake (a little more involved but highly recommended by bee)
misc: my mom wanted to take a sailing class but didn't want to do it alone so she offered to pay for me to come. sure, said i! i have never sailed! i like learning new skills! reader, it is So Fucking Hot Outside. the wind died and we had to get towed back to shore. the sun was so strong. there are so many ropes with all different names and they all Do Something. sunday's class got cancelled/rescheduled because the weather was That Bad (hot as fuck and no wind) so we're doing it probably friday instead (and saturday. and sunday. it's two weekends in a row of both days at 9am yayyyyy) but i just hope the weather is. better.

Ireland, Summer 1994 - Batsheva Dori-Carlier - Israel
Translator: Lisa Katz (Hebrew)
Through the window of the Aer Lingus plane, a green fan of fields embroidered with brown furrows. “The weather is fine in Dublin, no sign of clouds”. (Did the pilot sound surprised.) In the arrivals hall of Shannon airport you wrapped me in your gray raincoat: “How was the flight?”
You opened the door to the apartment on Drumcondra Street with a royal sweep of your arm. We shared yellow butter and whole grain bread, Leonard Cohen songs and insights we’d gathered (sanctimonious, unquestioning). I looked through the kitchen window, charmed by the red brick wall in the back yard, half-covered by greenery, an unkempt beard.
In the evening in the pub on Grafton Street, joy flowed thickly, simply, like foam. Our coats clung to each other on the polished wooden hanger, soaking up poetry, pipe smoke and melting steam. We drank from mugs of thin glass decorated with golden harps: a pint of black Guinness poured into the evening’s talk. Your bachelor bed gazed in envy as we slept entwined.
“There are some dead certainties and some lively doubts” claimed the sign on the church wall. I copied snide quotes on a postcard to my sister. In the afternoon we rested on the banks of the Liffey, fumes from the brewery wafted through the air like drunken sheep. Tomorrow we’ll set out for our trip to the Dingle Peninsula, three days at an inn.
We stood at the edge of an overhang: clear salt water swirled over purple sea weed and foamed, rough as a fist, on Ireland’s coarse skin. We were silent, careful not to be swept away into the constant quarrel between land and water.
Your old car led us faithfully, navigating roads covered with the leaves of trees and shrubs. I was twenty-four and complicated, Yeats and Maud Gonne on the horizon through the windshield.

- October 19th 2023 -
What's for dinner tonight? I'm going to make veggie burgers, BBQ baked beans, and roasted broccoli.
Do you prefer cold or room temperature drinking water? Room temperature.
How many different things have you had to drink today? Three - water, Irish breakfast tea, and a turmeric shot.
When you read a book, do you use a bookmark or simply dog ear/fold the top of the page? I use a bookmark.
What's the nearest city to you with a population of at least one million? If you're counting just the population in the city proper, then it would be Toronto. But if you're counting the entire metropolitan area (suburbs, surrounding towns, etc.), then it would be Cleveland. But the City of Cleveland itself only has like ~370,000 people. I wouldn't really call it a major city.
During the pandemic, did you use reusable or disposable masks? A bit of both. I had a few gray washable masks that I bought from Target, and also some disposable surgical masks and N95 masks. I still have some, actually.
What is your favourite local restaurant? Maybe the little cafe across from the town square. Or the farm-to-table restaurant.
Have you ever been harassed while minding your own business walking down the street? Nope. I've never experienced catcalling or anything like that.
Do you own a gun? Have you ever thought about getting one? Nope. I used to have one when I was into shooting sports years ago, but I've absolutely zero interest in that stuff now. Looking back I'm actually quite horrified by how easy it was to buy it. There should be way more oversight and regulations than there currently are.
Do you know anyone who owns a gun? My friend Cory hunts deer and elk as his main source of meat, so I'm assuming he has one, but he's never mentioned anything about it.
What year is/what your 10 year high school reunion? Will you (or did you) attend? It was in 2018, but I didn't go because I lived a 7-hour drive away from my hometown at the time.
Do you cut your sandwiches into triangles or rectangles? I cut grilled cheese sandwiches into triangles, but that's the only type of sandwich that I ever cut.
Have you ever seen a panda in real life? Where was it? Maybe while visiting the zoo as a kid? I can't remember.
Are there any postcards hanging around the house? If so, where are they from? I don't think so.
Does it snow where you live? Oh yeah, winters here are quite snowy.
When was the last time you took a flight? Where did you go? Nearly 2 weeks ago. My husband and I were flying from Dublin to Washington DC.
Is there a flight path over your house? Yep, Cleveland-Hopkins has an RNAV (GPS) approach for traffic arriving from the south, which has a waypoint over our house. I never flew it when I was a pilot but my husband occasionally flies over our house on that approach if his last flight home is from the Southeast US.
Does your neighbourhood have a lot of hills? Nope.
Have you ever had covid? What was your experience like? No. At least, not that I know of. I've been sick only once since 2018, but my Covid test was negative. I guess it's possible I've had it but I would have been completely asymptomatic if I did.
Do you have any alcohol in your house right now? Yep, some Guinness.
Do you tend to keep alcohol around the house for when you might want it? No, I don't usually have any in the house. My husband and I bought the Guinness after we got back home from Ireland so we could compare it to the draught Guinness they have in Ireland. The Guinness in Ireland tastes much better than the bottled/canned Guinness here in the US.
Has a romantic partner ever given you a pet as a gift? Nope, he wouldn't do that and I wouldn't want him to. Getting a new pet is a decision we'd make together.
Do you ever talk on the phone with friends? Sometimes with Cory.
What was the last thing someone said to you in person? "Have a nice night" or something like that, from the cashier at the grocery store yesterday evening. I haven't spoken to anyone in person since then - my husband's away for work and I haven't gone anywhere yet today.
Are you hungry right now? What would you like to eat? Nope.
How far away are your parents right now? About 27 or 28 miles away. 45-ish minute drive.
Do you believe in aliens? Yep. Considering there are hundreds of billions (maybe even trillions) of galaxies in the universe, and each of those galaxies has billions of planets, it's pretty much statistically impossible that Earth is the ONLY planet in the entire universe that has life on it.
Have you ever been bitten by a spider? Nope.
Do you own any clothing made from animal products like leather or fur? Not clothing, no. I do have a few leather handbags, though.
What's the best vacation you've ever been on? The trip to London that my husband and I went on for our 6th wedding anniversary.

Day 7 - Jan 7 - Copenhagen
I slept goooood. Finally. I got like 9 hours of sleep!!
Omg I did so so much today. In totality, I went to 2 castles (Rosenberg and Amalienborg), 4 museums (Design Museum of Denmark, Natural History Museum, SMK national art gallery, and the Guinness World Records Museums lmao), 2 sights (The Round Tower and Church of our Savior - quick peak from outside), and a bouldering gym!! I am so tired but I feel goooood
I also only spent like $12 on food, and really $7 bc $5 of it is technically gummies that I might keep for souvenir lmao. I ate my bread from yesterday for breakfast and then the pizza for lunch. I had this amaaazing grocery store sandwich from Netto for dinner. It was like a Mediterranean chicken sandwich. I liked.
Anyways, I woke up around 8, walked to ø12 coffee, which I thought was a coffee shop cafe but it was more of a sit down restaurant cafe, so I had to awkwardly order coffee to go. I grabbed my espresso and started walking through Stroget to get to Rosenberg Castle for my reso at 10am. It took about an hour to go through and it was pretty cool! Then I tried to go to the Botanical Garden across the street, but it’s going through construction and I could not for the life of me find the entrance. So I just started heading to the Amalienborg castle. I got there in time to see people lining up and crowding to watch the changing of the guard ceremony. Because it’s winter and the Royal family stays at this castle during the winter, the ceremony includes the guards band! It was pretty cool to see them do everything while we’re standing in the rain.
After they stopped doing cool stuff I went to the museum and quickly walked through it. It wasn’t AS cool but it was coo. Since the design museum is so close, I quickly walked over there and zooooooomed through that museum. It wasn’t that interesting - some parts were cool but some parts were like uh.. most of it felt like IKEA. But less cool…
Then I went to the Natural History Museum which I was SO excited for bc I LOVE dinosaurs.
There were no dinosaurs. The exhibit bad structure of the museum was so confusing and I ended up getting turned around many times. The Neanderthal exhibit replaced the dinosaur one and that made me really sad. That exhibit was lame. However, the photography exhibit was suuuper cool and got me emotional.
Then I crossed the street to go to SMK, which was poppping offf - lots of foreigners. It was a grand ol art gallery with a special Matisse exhibit. I don’t like old European art. I went through it very fast bc it was really lame. There was this “installation” exhibit that I walked into and the first one I saw was a bunch of mannequins that had been torn or destroyed around the private parts or other parts of the body and I remember thinking “wtf is this exhibition about rape?” I read the plaque - indeed it was about rape. Makes you think about whether or not people should make art.
Anyways, it was dark by the time I was ready to leave - I bought a postcard of the red studio
I realized the round tower and Guinness world record museum were open til 6pm so I went to those
Round tower was coo but I see why people go in the day - the view is great but it gotta be clear and daylight lol
Guinness world record museum was definitely meant as a gag thing for children - it was a little lame but there were some interesting facts I didn’t know - it was a light museum to digest. And it was included so why not? I only spent like 30 mins there before it closed
After that, I pulled the trigger to go to Christiania even though it was dark and late- I figured there was a restaurant I wanted to go to so I could go eat first and rest up, get energy, and power through Christiania to get to Bloc & Walls.
I was wrong. The restaurant didn’t freaking let me in!! It was half empty and they were like sorry we are fully booked and can’t seat you. I was like 🤔🖕🏼
So I started walking back to the central streets to find more food options, I couldn’t find anything so I just started walking to the art town and pusher street.
I was crossing the street to the entrance of Christiania, I was behind this other guy who was jaywalking and I was like 5 feet behind me. A man who had just left Christiania started yelling “NOO YOU CANT CROSS!!” And pushed the other man in front of me back to the other side of the street!!! I was like wtf so I walked faster. This group of men walked past me and I heard one say “you are a lucky young lady” in like a scolding way.. I think I did something wrong?? I looked it up at the gym but I think jaywalking is illegal but idk what the rules are in that commune!!
Anyways after that I was super spooked and just powered through that area. Pusher street is so sketch hahaha it’s like a red light district but for WEED of all things. There weren’t a lot of women so I just stayed next to couples, luckily there were still a lot of tourists. But there were times where I was like holy fuck it’s so dark what the fuck am I doing holy duck holy fuck
I finally got back to a main road and started looking for food bc AGAIN i was so so hungry and I looked at the map and I was so far away from the gym so I decided to just take the bus. I walked a little further and right next to my next bus stop was a Netto grocery store, so I bought a sandwich and some gummies and hopped on the bus
The Copenhagen card covers transit but idk how it works, every time I showed the driver, they just waved me away 🤷🏻‍♀️ fine by me I guess
I scarfed down my sandwich once I got to my stop as I walked to the gym
The gym was quite nice, a little pricey - it was $27 for pass and shoes ( I really should’ve said I was a student idk why I do this ) but the routes were fun and I got to do some abs
Around 9:15pm I was like I should probably get going, so I proceed to prep to go back out into the cold. The bus was super easy and quick back - I saw a lady bring her cocker spaniel in a tote bag on the bus
Then I walked to 7-11 to get some bandaids bc I noticed I had blisters on my big toes and get another snack - they have so many incredible snacks! The candy selection is next level and the chocolates are mind blowing. I think I need to try some.
Once I got back, I showered really quick, did laundry, and ate my snack/read my book while I waited. It’s now almost midnight and I’m still waiting on my clothes to dry 😩

Ursula K. Le Guin
The 33rd stamp in the Literary Arts series honors Ursula K. Le Guin (1929-2018), who expanded the scope of literature through novels and short stories that increased critical and popular appreciation of science fiction and fantasy. The stamp features a portrait of Le Guin based on a 2006 photograph. The background shows a scene from her landmark 1969 novel “The Left Hand of Darkness,” in which an envoy from Earth named Genly Ai escapes from a prison camp across the wintry planet of Gethen with Estraven, a disgraced Gethenian politician. The artist for this stamp was Donato Giancola. The art director was Antonio Alcalá. The words “three ounce” on this stamp indicate its usage value. Like a Forever stamp, this stamp will always be valid for the value printed on it.
