SCIENCE MOST SINISTER: VOLUME II - PART EIGHT
(I know I sound like a broken record at this point but I am SO sorry for the hiatus! I didn’t mean for it to go on this long, I was slammed with both life and writer’s block at the same time BUT NOW WE’RE BACK YIPPEE!)
The first order of business once they had all stepped off the train was to figure out where everyone’s sleeping quarters would be. Kemp offered to house those of them who, for obvious reasons, could not book a room—Griffin (reluctantly), Sherlock, Watson, and Jekyll—in his manor, while the rest of the House and the Society headed into town to find an inn.
According to Kemp, Port Burdock had only one inn. His directions led the Society, Victor, the Time Traveller, and Gwen to a surprisingly large yet ramshackle building roughly a mile from the docks. The paint on the window frames was chipped, and the snow-covered shingles looked as grey and weather-worn as all the other buildings they had passed.
The sign that hung above the door creaked in the wind; the paint was faded and the metal rusted over, but the name was legible enough: The Albatross. Whether it was meant to be a blessing or a curse, Mycroft could not say for certain.
The lobby inside was just as bleak as the outside. The walls were devoid of any decoration except for a couple faded photographs of the docks, which seemed to have been hung as a halfhearted attempt to brighten the place up. The windows were covered in a layer of dust, as were the rickety chairs, tables, and the railing of the staircase leading to the upper floors.
Behind the front desk slouched a short, round old woman with an expression of utter boredom on her face. Upon hearing the door open, her eyes flicked up almost reflexively. She then did a double take once she realized that eight people had indeed walked into the inn on purpose, and hastily straightened up.
“Eight rooms, please,” Mycroft said, walking up to the desk. The innkeeper nodded, her glazed eyes scanning the money halfheartedly to make sure it was the proper sum, then handed him a ring of keys.
Passing out the keys and dropping their luggage off in their respective rooms took less than five minutes. Finding Kemp’s house took even less time. The manor loomed over the port from its place atop a steep hill, visible even from the docks. Kemp, Mycroft knew, was not fond of visitors unless strictly necessary, and even less so of the residents of Port Burdock, whom the scientist had described to Mycroft as “superstitious half-wits.” His disdain for the townsfolk was made even more evident by the fact that the only path up to his house was rather overgrown.
The eight stragglers were admitted inside by the footman and led into the dining room, where they found the rest of the Society and the House gathered around the dining table.
As Mycroft took the empty chair next to Sherlock, there came a thud and a curse. Behind him, Kemp was struggling to maneuver a massive evidence board through the door. Edmund immediately leapt up to help him. Griffin snickered, then yelped as the Time Traveller kicked him under the table.
Once he and Edmund finally managed to drag the board into the room, Kemp turned towards the table. “This is the culmination of every piece of information we have been able to find regarding Thomas Marvel’s murder,” he said, gesturing to the web of newspaper clippings, documents, and photographs pinned to the board and connected by lengths of red string. “Most of the credit for obtaining it should be given to Mycroft and Utterson; I doubt we would have been able to obtain half as much had a lawyer and a government official not been part of the Society.” He nodded at the respective men. Mycroft mentally grimaced. Field work had never been his forte, but after joining the Society, he hadn’t been given much of a choice.
“Before his death, Marvel was the owner of an inn called The Invisible Man. With Griffin’s involvement no longer a possibility, we have narrowed our list down to four suspects.” Kemp pointed to a photograph of a dark-haired young woman. “Millie Cutter was the inn’s maid. From what we know, she is currently employed as a laundress and is working from her own home.”
Next, he moved to a photograph of an elderly woman with a round face and bright eyes. “Ivanya Lovrić was the inn’s head cook. She now works in The Albatross’s kitchens. I don’t suppose any of you may have seen her when you booked your rooms?” He received only shakes of the head from the Society, the Time Traveller, Gwen, and Victor in response. He sighed. “Never mind.”
He then pointed to a photograph of a dark-skinned man with a glare so cold it could freeze Hell. “Ezekiel Roman operated the inn’s front desk. I have no idea what his current occupation is, because from what I understand, he is extremely solitary and does not enjoy interacting with strangers. I have, however, heard rumors that he may have picked up work at the docks.”
The last photograph he indicated was one of an unusually pale man with sharp features, light eyes, and a mop of blonde hair. “Barnabas Croft was the inn’s barmaid. Unfortunately, his current whereabouts are unknown, but I don’t doubt that asking about town would turn up information.” He accented that last bit with a disdainful eye roll.
Utterson took the following silence as his signal to stand. “I believe dividing and conquering is the best way to go about this,” he declared. “Mycroft, Watson, and I will interrogate Mr. Roman, seeing as he will be the most difficult to interrogate. Poole, Gwen, and the Time Traveller will interrogate Miss Cutter. Jekyll, Edmund, and Victor will interrogate Ms. Lovrić. Kemp and Walton will go around town and try to ascertain Mr. Croft’s location. Sherlock and Griffin, meanwhile, will investigate Marvel’s inn itself and search for evidence pertaining to both the murder and the identity of this new invisible man. We shall meet back here once everyone has returned.”
And with that, the investigation had begun.

Chronorun Reports notes:
Van Helsing, Jekyll, and Mrs. Frankenstein (Victor's mom) are siblings with Abraham and Henry being twins and Caroline being a few years younger (specific ages will have to wait until my brain decides that doing math is worth it)
(they are all a mix of Dutch, British, and Swiss btw)
(yes this means that Victor is Van Helsing's and Jekyll's nephew)
Van Helsing formed the HOSC to essentially bring light to all of the scientific discoveries that are happening (Jekyll's serum, any supernatural being he encountered, the time machine, Victor's creation, Griffin's invisibility, and more) but not without the house members' consent
Now let's get into the plot- a good amount of people in this universe have powers (almost all of the members of both societies have powers)
They are as follows:
Van Helsing- gains an ability of whatever type of entity he conquers (if he were to slay a vampire he would only get one of the abilities shared within all vamps. Ie teleportation) as well as natural immunity to most (not all) supernatural attacks and anomalistic mastery (or that could just be from his job)
Jekyll- technically he speaks to Hyde through telepathy as well as having telekinesis
Hyde- telepathy like Jekyll (because of course) and the ability to teleport objects and people away from and to him
(Jekyll and Hyde are forced to work together because they are not able to do what the other can as well as the other)
Victor- weather control (I just wanted to reference the movies, I think he would use it to help him animate the creation)
Griffin- now I know you might think that I'm going to make his invisibility his power, but that's not the case. He can however talk to animals, he just doesn't want anyone to know.
Time traveler- let's get the obvious out of the way, he can see any point in time (past present, and future), and it proved very helpful (but overwhelming and contributes to his time blindness)
Sherlock- like the time traveler, he could be obvious (giving him some kind of hyper-intelligence) so I'll give him tactical analysis and the hyper intertellince (or he could not have the ability and just be that smart, I haven't decided yet)
Watson- since he's a physician and royal army surgeon (according to Wikipedia), giving him a healing ability (more so healing others) would be a fair but obvious move. However, I want his medical knowledge to be utilized (meaning he would use actual medical practices instead of relying on powers) so the proper techniques would still have to be used (more so internal and really bad external wounds, broken bones, and deep/wide cuts being examples)
Gwen- now she could be a little difficult (considering the fact she is someone else's oc and I'm a bit scared to ask because it might look like I'm stealing their idea) so I'll move on for now. (she could have enhanced reflexes as it would be really helpful)
Switching gears to more general ideas (I'm looking for a reason to segway into the investigative committee's powers)
Griffin and the time traveler don't use their names for reasons they'd rather not admit (it has something to do with their experiments)
Van Helsing and Jekyll may make it look like they hate Victor (because he's an irresponsible, spoiled, college dropout who can be a bit of a nervous wreck at the most inconvenient times possible) but they're still trying to help him get over everything (and to take some god damn responsibly for once in his life)
Van Helsing and Watson are transcribing past journals, audio logs (the series takes place in the 21st century), and more as a part of the whole "bring light to all of the scientific discoveries that are happening" thing the HOSC does
The HOSC is very queer (not really with each other but you know)
Jekyll is a trans, ace, gay man (maybe Hyde too, he hasn't really thought about it, both he/him though)
Victor is pansexual and nonbinary (he/they)
Griffin is a bi demi-boy (also he/they)
Sherlock seems to be more interested in his work than in relationships (aroace cis man)
Watson is more open to the idea than Sherlock is though, at some point being stated to have said "I think everyone looks nice, does that mean im attracted to everyone? No not everyone, but certain people attract me more than others." (doesn't put a label on gender either but uses he/it/they)
Time Traveler is a theatre kid so he is probably the most open with his sexuality and gender (gay nonbinary dude using they/it)
Again, I have no idea for Gwen as she is not my character (well none of them are, I might have one at some point but thats not what I'm here for) so I either ask the creator or leave her as unlabelled (which might not be a bad idea actually) although the picrew shows her as aroace
Van Helsing might be the only straight one (I say might be because he doesn't know, still uses he/him though)
Now for the Missing person's investigative committee: they are in charge of finding out the who, where, what, why, when, and how of missing person cases
Utterson and Poole started it after Jekyll faked his death, which happened about a week after Van Helsing got back from killing Dracula (so it was like 7 years ago based on Quincey jr's age in the main story)
I'm now imagining a very stressed Van Helsing hearing about his brother supposedly killing himself because his latest experiment went tits up (excuse me while I try not to cry)
Their powers are:
Utterson- since he's a lawyer, giving him something like Holmes' hyper-intelligence (if it's his ability at all) is kinda obvious so some kind of adaptive ability could be fun (body language analysis could be useful)
Poole- super speed to help him with all of his duties (and in case of emergencies)
Mycroft- I kinda want his to be out of the park but still useful in a way, fuck it he can turn off others' abilities either by touching them or snapping his fingers
Walton- some kind of internal GPS for his traveling
Kemp- I tried reading the invisible man wiki to see what kind of doctor he is (he did go to a medical school so that could help) but couldn't really find anything so im going in sorta blind. I'm just going to make him a shapeshifter
Now that that is out of the way, few more things until pride shit
If someone pisses off Mycroft, their powers are just gone for the day (which could be devasting if they piss him off during a very important mission)
Walton being the youngest (younger than Hyde but older than Victor) means he is often the fastest and most agile of the group (until Poole uses his super speed obviously)
He's basically the group's son (at least to most of them, Mycroft might have some warming up to do)
Now, pride:
Utterson- Jekyll's husband (cis bi man, uses he/him)
Poole- unlabeled sexuality (aro he/it user)
Mycroft- like Van Helsing, he might be the only straight one (uses he/him)
Walton- trans, demisexual man (he/them/it)
Kemp- omnisexual nonbinary (they/them)
@mrhyde-mrseek what do you think?

Once and Future Royalty
Just, stay with me on this one. I know its going to look crazy at the start, but trust me, I know where I'm going.
It all started with the 537AD scene in Wessex in the opening montage of "Hard Times," S1E3. Yeah, the one where Aziraphale is supposed to be a knight of the Round Table and Crowley is role-playing the Black Knight, and they are both so super-squeaky shiny clean - not a speck of dirt or mud on them. wtf! It looks out of place, unrealistic, and was bugging the crap out of me, like a stone in your shoe. It just didn't fit. I mean, why put a myth, a legend, into that sequence? Oh, OK, yeah, the preceding stories from the Bible, like the Garden of Eden and the Flood, aren't "myths" as well, you say? Hmm. In the context of the Good Omens AU, being a biblical based story, they belong there far more than the legend of King Arthur.
King Arthur, who supposedly united Britain under his rule during the late 5th century and early 6th century, was shown to have the divine right to rule by wielding the mighty sword Excalibur. Some stories tell of Arthur pulling Excalibur from a stone. Some tell of him receiving Excalibur from the Lady of the Lake. Either way, it was bestowed upon him by divine grace. Despite his triumph in battle, he left no heirs, as his queen, the fair Guinevere, was barren. She had a long-running love affair with the greatest knight of the court, Sir Lancelot, but despite this being an open secret in court Arthur would not put her aside. The knights of the Round Table in the court of Camelot were near-paragons of Christian virtue, and there are many tales of their search for the Holy Grail, the cup from the Last Supper of Jesus Christ.
In the end, mortally wounded in battle, Arthur was taken away for healing, and never seen again. It was said he would return when Britain was at it most direst hour to save the day once more. A "messianic" return.
The Once and Future King.
Now, I'm no Arthurian novice; I drank up all of T. H. White as a teenager, read the Dark is Rising multiple times, Marion Zimmer Bradley's interpretation and what ever else I could lay my hands on for a good couple of decades. And there is LOTS of King Arthur stuff around. You are not left wanting for anything new to read or consume. And I'll bet there are a fair few of you also out there who know a quite bit about the legend as well. Oh, and I can't tell you how many times I have watched Monty Python and the Holy Grail. I still walk around quoting it day-to-day, like the good little Gen-Xer I am, having grown up on that stuff. So I really should have listened to my intuition when bits of Monty Python kept popping up in my brain in response to other parts of GO I was thinking about. (Staaay, I said, stay with me here....)
I kept chewing away furiously on the Wessex problem, growling in feral frustration at it, but also kept reading and sorting out some other ideas and metas at the same time. Eventually I found the key in a tiny little post, about a small detail in the 1941 Blitz episode S2E4, of all places. I wanted to slap myself with how much was staring me in the face so obviously once the door opened. And the damn beauty of it is, that I already written about some it, out of context, without knowing the why.
OK. Where to start this journey...hmmm, back to Monty Python, because, guess what - the Wessex scene is actually riffing off one the more famous skits out the the Holy Grail. The scene is a masterpiece of political satire, from start to finish, but the relevant part here is this sequence:
In case you missed the salient points: Arthur claims he is king by divine providence, because he was given Excalibur by the Lady of the Lake. Dennis the peasant protests this waterlogged method of determination, mentioning ponds, watery tarts and a moistened... well, I hope you get the idea about where this is going.
Meanwhile, in 537AD, Wessex, as the mist swirls around them:
"It is a bit damp," complains a shiny silver Aziraphale.
Yes, Excalibur would be a bit damp after it emerged from the Lake. (vidavalor! Get your mind out of the gutter! I'm trying to have a serious discussion here! Please! And I wasn't even going to go anywhere near what the sword in the stone is really meant to be referring to...it's not even relevant to the discussion at hand, I swear! Well, there is going to be sexual relations mentioned but - oh, never mind...)
Right. Where were we. Lets leave those super-clean elite pretendy knights to swim off through the swirling mist back to their dry homes to write and file reports to head office, along with Patsy and the hired Igors, and Dennis can keep playing in his lovely muddy filth after he finishes protesting being repressed by the divinely-deluded Arthur. I've got a bit more to say about what Aziraphale and Crowley might represent here later but you need some more context first, so lets move on. I just needed to show you the first bit so you can see the Arthurian theme stretches across both S1 and S2, and will likely appear in S3 as well. More about that towards the end.
Ah, before I forget...another ref from the Holy Grail we need to cover:
This GIF, unfortunately, doesn't have the full exchange between the peasants, which is this:
P1: "Who's that then?" P2: "I don't know. Must be a king." P1: "How can you tell?" P2: "Because he doesn't have any shit on him."
Ah. Er. OH!
Have you made the connection?
Who have I been emphasizing as being unusually clean in their Arthurian setting? That's right, Aziraphale and Crowley.
What's this implying? That they are royalty. Celestial royalty. Maybe not kings, but how about princes? You know how we've been discussing whether Crowley was a once at least an Archangel, and there is even a hint that he was a fallen prince of Heaven given during the replay of Gabriel's trial? (Not the prince, but a prince - a seraphim) And that Aziraphale may have once been Raphael, and may be again in the future? Once and future royalty. To me it adds weight to the past discussion, and helps to explain the assumed authority expressed in these two scenes here: On the left, Aziraphale takes control inside the book shop as the angels and demons argue who is going to punish Gabriel and Beelzebub (finally found it after several months!) and on the right, Crowley is shouting at the assembling demons in the street that they are "out of order."
Onward, Patsy. (I hope you're still with me.)
1941, the Blitz part 2, minisode.
We've found Excalibur! On to Camelot!
[Edit note: I've added a few GIFs and screen shots into the sequence of parallels above because I was thinking over a few things since I posted and felt this actually sat better. To try and explain, as they don't exactly match as I would like, in the Holy Grail movie, King Arthur and the knights he has gathered rock up at the foot of Camelot and gaze up in awe at it. "Camelot!" Arthur declares to the party. "Camelot!" Galahad echoes in excitement. And a third "Camelot!" comes from Lancelot. What do we get in GO? Aziraphale leaps out of the Bentley (Crowley's black horse) and declares "The theater! Sophocles! Shakespeare!" I swear, if you put the two side by side, they would match. It's not just a reminder of how much time Aziraphale has seen pass by, or that we are seeing a tragedy play out. But damn it, I could so just see Aziraphale attending a Sophocles performance in Athens back in the day...]
Camelot was King Arthur's castle and home of his court. In S2 of GO the Windmill Theater is established as our court of Camelot where our 1941 Blitz-era Arthurian drama is to play out, involving Furfur and the zombies.
Yes, poor old Furfur. Two's company, three's a crowd, as they say. Now we know we're in Camelot, we need to be reminded of the central tragedy of the Arthurian story, that ultimately led to the golden kingdom's fall. Lady Guinevere, Arthur's queen, famously loved Sir Lancelot, and the two were passionate lovers. It was essentially a love-triangle at the top, with Arthur being jilted, but he wouldn't/couldn't discard his queen. Where do we see this playing out in 1941?
Furfur, pleased with himself for catching an angel and a demon in the act of consorting together (with the help of the zombies,) barges into the backstage dressing room, and confronts the lovers with their crime. But who is playing who in the Arthurian love triangle? I would say Furfur is clearly caught in the role of Arthur here. Consider the following exchange:
FURFUR: Hmm, well, well, well… What have we here? AZIRAPHALE: Sorry, have we met? FURFUR: Oh, no, you never had the pleasure, but… we have, haven't we? CROWLEY: Have we? FURFUR: What do you mean "have we?" You know we have. We were in the same legion. Just before the Fall. Doing dubious battle on the plains of Heaven. Remember? CROWLEY: I remember going into battle, I don't remember being there with you. Sorry. FURFUR: I was right next to you. We did loads together. You use to jump on me back, little monkey in the waistcoat. Anyway, whether you do or whether you don't, it doesn't matter. I'm here to inform you, as a representative of the Higher Powers of Hell, that you, Crowley, are in breach of the Infernal Code. Consulting and collaborating with an angel, Fell the Marvelous, aka… [opens book] Azirapalala. Azirapapap. Aziphapalala. AZIRAPHALE: [annoyed] Aziraphale
Furfur claims a past intimate relationship with Crowley, which Crowley spurns offhandedly. Crowley is playing Guinevere here, jilting Furfur/Arthur, which leaves the demon-smiting Aziraphale standing in for the handsome hero Lancelot (with his French connections, no less), and doesn't he make us weak at the knees when he drops his voice an octave in dominating disgust. (Is it suddenly getting hot in here...? Phew!)
Interestingly, looking back in S1 at 537AD Wessex, though, I would say that Crowley was Lancelot as the Black Knight, a role that Lancelot sometimes played in the legends, and Aziraphale would then be the fair maiden Guinevere. It certainly plays into Crowley's long term role of playing the knight who comes to the rescue of Aziraphale's princess in distress. Excalibur was no where in sight, perhaps still beneath the waters of the lake. Nor Arthur. Perhaps it was still too early in the story then...
I had originally suggested in my very first post that Furfur was given a stag as his demon avatar because he was wearing horns for being cuckolded by Crowley. But I wasn't quite thinking about it in context with the Arthurian legend! The stag is also often associated with royalty, plus while wandering around the medieval bestiary website that someone linked to, it interestingly notes that the enemy of the snake is the stag and the stork (Shax's avatar.) Ah ha!
So how can we extrapolate this knowledge into a possible appearance of the Arthurian theme in S3?
Will we see the love triangle of Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot come back into play and cause more chaos? I'm wondering if it might have something to do with the Fall.
Or will our lovers bring down a divinely-appointed ruler via their committed behind-the-back defiance of expected propriety?
Will Excalibur appear from beneath the waters, perhaps in another form, to declare a new king?
Could it even be a combination Jesus/Arthur, King of the World, returned? And they turn out to be a very naughty boy, disappearing into the night clubs of Times Square, New York, and that's how they lose him? (Social media viral sensation, anyone?)
I wouldn't be half-surprised if Greasy Johnson's name turns out to be Arthur, actually.
And no, I haven't forgotten that Adam's dad was named Arthur as well.
Bring on S3!
**Bonus**
If you've made it this far and you're thinking:
Let me leave you with this last connection.
In the back stage change room, remember Furfur delivers these lines:
FURFUR: What do you mean "have we?" You know we have. We were in the same legion. Just before the Fall. Doing dubious battle on the plains of Heaven. Remember?
On the first level, he is referring the Great War in the Good Omens AU.
On the second level, Furfur is paraphrasing Milton's Paradise Lost.
On a third level, I can (and will in a future meta) connect this back to the training initiative paintball fight at Tadfield Manor in S1.
And even deeper on a fourth level, if you do know the Holy Grail movie well, you'll remember there is an odd little subplot in it, that infers that the whole King Arthur and his knights thing is merely a full-on violent cosplay that is murderously rampaging across the countryside in the present day with the police in hot pursuit. It's a strange juxtaposition between reality and dream, and you aren't quite sure what it is real or not. The ending is bizarrely and abruptly surreal as the two story lines collide in the heat of battle, as the police turn up and arrest the combatants. A bit like this:

Au contraire, @dunkthebiscuit, that sounds exactly like the end of S2 to me!
You know that shot from the magic shop in 1941? The one with the sword (and the “Excalibur’s Chest” magic trick) between them?
@myladycrow12 reminded me on my gif set post of the similarity to the visual in a scene from the movie Excalibur (1981 - check it out if you haven’t seen it - deeply weird and dark and rated R - fantastic music). There’s a scene where Lancelot and Guinevere have consummated their forbidden love affair in the woods, Arthur comes along while they are sleeping and leaves Excalibur in between them. I went to grab a screenshot from the movie, saw that it is pretty much the same sword, and was shooketh. Here you go:
Lancelot and Guinevere KNOW now they have been found out, that Arthur knows, and that he did not immediately strike them down but that consequences will happen. (There’s also a whole thing about Arthur abandoning the sword that gives him the right to rule, but we’ll leave that be for the moment… except to say that Lancelot freaks out about this issue, and runs off into the woods ass out which is actually pretty funny)
How does this relate to our ineffables? Well, at this point Aziraphale has realized what their relationship is (it’s love, baby!!!), Crowley’s been there all along (maybe not in the same words but you know), but they are still being watched, monitored and observed - literally by the nazi zombie yahoos in this scene but potentially at all times from above. That’s a great big sword keeping them apart.

I admire Guinevere and Lancelot in The Accolade painting by Philip Ralley and so here is Crowley and Aziraphale in this universe.
Except for Crowley is more like in Richard II design there 😁

Forever and a Day- 7
I’m a nerd who makes terrible jokes sorry not sorry. Socrates was basically executed for his ideas and famously rubbed people the wrong way so if you met him prat might well be the impression you got of him 😆 The Chretien de Troyes joke is a little more obscure. The knight of the cart is an Arthurian legend written in the mid 12th century about Sir Lancelot wherein he pines excessively over Guinevere and at one point cuts part of a finger off sneaking in to see her and bleeds everywhere while he shags her. It was reportedly written as a commission for a princess because this was the type of saucy fanfic she wanted and is full of sex and violence and pining and was basically the steamy romance novel of the day. The whole thing is just a freaking pine forest though- It’s basically a story about courtly romance which was the ideal for a hero of the time and Lancelot displays a longing for Guinevere so intense and unstoppable that he almost hurls himself out a window because she leaves his sight for instance. It’s showcasing a passion for someone so strong you would risk your reputation and your very body just to serve them even though they are technically off limits… and that’s why I love the thought of Crowley chucking it In Aziraphale’s direction. 😂
If you’re enjoying this comic or my other one, consider supporting its creation by joining my Patreon! You’ll see each page a week earlier and lots more goodies INCLUDING the new content I’m adding to With Bated Breath as I ready it for printing, with nary a censor sticker to be seen 😮

With Merlin trending, allow me to share my genius idea.
I don't really want a revival or season 6, but maybe they could do an epilogue/post-show special?
I think the funniest and most potential idea is obviously a special where Arthur rises and Merlin has to introduce him to the modern world, but that pretty much cuts all the other characters out of the equation for what is supposed to be a reunion/anniversary/comeback special.
So maybe it could be a series of moments in time, like episode 3 of Good Omens?
Here's some things I thought of that would have good potential to be in a special:
Parts of Guinevere's rule: Did she get remarried and have kids? Did she repeal the magic ban?
Did Merlin ever go back to Camelot? If he did, a scene of him and Guinevere actually discussing his magic would be awesome, since her "reveal" was an indirect confirmation from Gaius.
Where did Aithusa go? We know she was alive after the battle, but it never shows her again after Emrys sends her away. Did Merlin finally get to be her mentor/guardian? Did she recover from the crippling that she experienced, and learn to speak?
How did Camelot fall/disperse into a modern country? Camelot is obviously in modern day England. How did it stop being Camelot? Was it destroyed or absorbed by an enemy? Did it gradually turn into England?
Magic: What is magic like? Does it die out except for Merlin? Does it still exist, but the general population stopped believing it to be real because of how rare sorcerers become? What about magic creatures like the griffin and the fomorroh?
Merlin waiting for Arthur: Episode 3 of Good Omens includes a compilation of scenes of Aziraphale and Crowley across the centuries and in different eras. It would be cool to see Merlin moving through time similarly.
Arthur rising from the lake: This is a given, it has to happen. We have been very patient, and Merlin has been even more patient. We deserve to see the Once and Future King rise again.
Arthur in the modern world: Obviously, this would be really fun and silly, as well as somber. Seeing Arthur learn about modern things would be funny, but obviously, he would have to come to terms with the passage of so much time.
The only issue I find with this lineup of events/scenes is finding a way to bring Katie McGrath back, since Morgana died during the events of the canon show, not in the future like Gwen, Gaius, Percival, or Leon.
I guess it would be most effective to have some flashback scenes mixed into the flashforward scenes. Flashbacks would also allow other important, deceased characters to come back for the special, like the knights, (Lancelot, Elyan, Gwaine) and Uther, since Anthony Head was a major actor in the show.
Regardless, THIS is what I would want if BBC Merlin "came back". THIS would be amazing. It would satisfy the desire to see into the future of the characters without needing a full season, which the cast/crew have all said they don't want to do.
Share this around if you like this idea! I would love to see other people's additions.

Monkey Business with Furfur
This is a 2024 Smut War meta
(NSFW? I tried to keep it reasonably clean, just filled with innuendo.)
Time to dig up some dirty dirt from before the Fall.
Memory problems? Oh, Hell no! There was no way Crowley was going admit to remembering this bit of history between him and Furfur, especially not in front of Aziraphale.
On the surface this incident with Furfur in the dressing room at the Windmill Theater adds weight to the appearance that Crowley has holes in his memory, just like Gabriel does during S2. But a closer look at the language being used during the post-magic show scene actually reveals quite the opposite - something that is - well, I shouldn't say totally unexpected because I've written about it tangentially before - but something that I think will shake up the way we view things between the three of them.
Firstly, lets review what I call the sub-story theme running underneath this section of the episode: King Arthur and Camelot. I talked about it length in my meta Once and Future Royalty. Here's the important paragraphs from that work for this particular meta:
[See GIFs at top - I will quote relevant script shortly in detail]
Furfur claims a past intimate relationship with Crowley, which Crowley spurns offhandedly. Crowley is playing Guinevere here, jilting Furfur/Arthur, which leaves the demon-smiting Aziraphale standing in for the handsome hero Lancelot (with his French connections, no less), and doesn't he make us weak at the knees when he drops his voice an octave in dominating disgust. (Is it suddenly getting hot in here...?Phew!)
Recently someone posted more images of Furfur's costume, and the sash was shown reversed, where a red crown can clearly be seen under the stag's head, which to me just adds weight to the Furfur=Arthur role.
Next we need to take another look at this line from Furfur:
FURFUR: I was right next to you. We did loads together. You used to jump on me back, little monkey in the waistcoat.
Everyone took this too literally.
Really.
I mean really really.
There are two things - ok, three things - this set of lines tells us.
The first is the most obvious and likely the surface impression - maybe Crowley did turn himself into a monkey. But this is a misdirection to the real information here, so forget that. Put it to one side for the moment, at least.
Secondly, Furfur had a "monkey on his back."
We see by this turn of phrase that he was burdened by a problem, or something he couldn't let go of, and in this situation it clearly looks like a long held bitter feeling towards Crowley and his apparent freedom on Earth.
CROWLEY: Oh, we shan't, this is ridiculous. [leans back and puts hat over his face] FURFUR: No, what's ridiculous is demons like you doing what they please. And somehow still getting on, while demons like me graft for hundreds and hundreds of millennia and never get a sniff of a promotion! Well, not this time. Expect a Legion to come for you first thing tomorrow. Enjoy your last night on Earth.
Thirdly, the whole thing indicates there is a past history of "monkey business" between Furfur and Crowley, before the Fall. This is further emphasized by Furfur's greeting on arrival:
FURFUR: Hmm, well, well, well... What have we here? AZIRAPHALE: Sorry, have we met? FURFUR: Oh, no, you never had the pleasure, but... we have, haven't we? CROWLEY: Have we?
Ohhhh, Crowley. o_0 No, no, no, no, nooooooo..........
Can you see it? Can you see why he would deny knowing Furfur? That they did "loads together?"
Do you know what "monkey business" is an alternative phrase for?
Remember the Arthur/Guinevere/Lancelot love triangle?
Do you think Crowley is going to admit this in front of his angel?
Uh huh.
Really. Really really.
An "unreliable narrator" indeed.

xxviii. here comes the knight (ineffable remix)
Here Comes the Knight - Van Morrison
This love will surely last forever / This love will surely last always
Any knight who's any knight shows up for King Arthur's latest tournament, a great multi-day event meant to celebrate the wedding of someone or other. The Black Knight rides in with the others, a tall black 1 streak on the field. Aziraphale's there, too. Crowley'd hoped he would be. He's not a knight, though, not this time; this time, he's a lady in Guinevere's retinue, most decorously arrayed.
Crowley spots him all the way across the field, long white curling hair like a cloud, a real Heavenly vision of blue silk and wool. "Aziraphale," he says, and kisses Aziraphale courteously, in the manner of the times. Aziraphale is flushing when he pulls back, although it could be the heat of the day, the summer sun. "Come to watch the tournament?”
"Oh, I suppose," he says. "It is awfully exciting, isn't it?" Around them, multicolored pennants flap; there's the clang of jousting knights, horses' hooves, cries of merchants with their wares. "Are you going to compete? They say the field is formidable."
Crowley shrugs. He's got a black flag, black shield, each with a serpent on it, twined around a red heart. "I have no luck token," he says, referring to the scraps of fabric women give their preferred knights so they know who to root for on the field.
Aziraphale tsks, undoes his belt, a blue silken thing seeded with pearls. "Give me your arm," he says, and ties his belt around Crowley's upper arm, his sword arm. "There," he says, standing back and admiring his handiwork. And no tricks," he says, sternly.
"It's like you want me to discorporate," Crowley says, but he rides off dutifully into the field.
And he doesn't use any tricks, but when the third spear misses him, gone completely wide, Crowley realizes the token is blessed. He can feel it, the soft soothing trickle of Aziraphale's power rolling over him, like a good, gentle rain. He grins. And then he really sets about laying to the left side and the right side, as they say, everyone miraculously avoiding serious harm, except Sir Kay, who had made fun of Aziraphale once, and who suffers a broken collarbone. Throughout it all he can make out Aziraphale in the queen's box, his white hair shining in the sun like a halo, turned his way, always. Throughout that day, and the next, and the next, Crowley clears the field, until it's just him and Gawain, facing off.
At the feast that night, which concludes the tournament, Aziraphale says, "You could have won, you know," their fingers brushing as Crowley passes him a platter of roasted quail.
Crowley looks over at Gawain, sitting with a fair maid on his lap. Gawain winks at him. “You said no tricks,” Crowley says to Aziraphale now, who follows his gaze, and puts his hand to his heart2, and gives Crowley a dewy look.
“Shut up,” Crowley says, but he doesn’t mean it, not one bit.
Crowley still has that belt, centuries later, that scrap of blue silken luck, embroidered with seed pearls, and with Aziraphale's love.
