What are The Benefits of Group Counseling?
Tumblr media
7 Benefits of Group Therapy
1. A Sense of Belonging
One of the greatest benefits of group therapy is realizing that you are not alone. Many people with mental health challenges feel isolated, which can make seeking help difficult. In a group setting, you connect with others facing similar struggles. This shared experience fosters trust and reduces feelings of judgment or shame.
2. Gaining New Perspectives
Group therapy exposes you to different viewpoints. Everyone has unique experiences and coping mechanisms. By hearing how others handle their challenges, you may discover new strategies that work for you. Additionally, group members are often at different stages in their recovery, allowing for mentorship and guidance.
3. Increased Accountability
Being part of a group encourages you to stay committed to your goals. While peer pressure is often seen as negative, in a therapy setting, it can be a positive force. Supportive group members offer motivation, feedback and encouragement, helping you stay on track in your recovery journey.
4. Building Confidence
Having a supportive group gives you a safety net. The encouragement of others builds self-confidence, making it easier to step outside of your comfort zone. Even if you face setbacks, knowing that your group is there for you provides reassurance and motivation to keep going.
5. Self-Discovery and Personal Growth
We all have blind spots—things about ourselves that we may not recognize or fully understand. Group therapy provides an opportunity to see yourself through the eyes of others. Honest feedback from group members can help you gain insight, overcome obstacles and grow as a person.
6. Support During Life Transitions
Many individuals in inpatient treatment rely on group therapy as part of their recovery. Transitioning to outpatient group therapy ensures ongoing support, helping maintain progress and providing a structured environment for continued growth.
7. Confidentiality and Trust
Confidentiality is essential in therapy—whether individual or group. While group members are not bound by the same legal obligations as therapists, most group therapy programs require participants to sign confidentiality agreements. This shared commitment to privacy creates a safe space where individuals feel comfortable sharing their thoughts and experiences.
PVD Psychological Associates offers individual, group and family counseling services for mental health and addiction treatment. If you or someone you know could benefit from group therapy, reach out today to start your journey toward healing.

Finding Strength in Numbers: Path to Healthy Living with Group Psychotherapy and Counselling!!
Think of a group of teenagers, each with their own struggles, coming together in a safe and supportive space to share their experiences and find solace. The thought of this happening in your mind, itself can make you smile.  What if this actually happens?
This is the power of group psychotherapy and counselling for teens. In a world where peer influence can be both positive and negative, group therapy provides a unique opportunity for adolescents to focus on what a healthy life truly means. Let's delve into four reasons why group counselling can be transformative for teens, empowering them to navigate the challenges they face.
Shared Understanding and Validation:
Group psychotherapy allows teens to connect with peers who are going through similar experiences. By hearing others share their stories, teenagers realize they are not alone in their struggles. This shared understanding fosters validation, reducing feelings of isolation and enhancing their sense of belonging. Through this collective support, teens gain the confidence to confront their addiction and work towards a healthier lifestyle.
Learning from Peers:
In group counselling, teens learn from one another's triumphs and setbacks. They witness first-hand the strategies and coping mechanisms their peers employ to overcome addiction. By observing the progress of others in the group, they gain insights and inspiration for their own recovery journey. This exchange of knowledge and experiences creates a dynamic and enriching learning environment.
Building Empathy and Compassion:
Group therapy cultivates empathy and compassion in teens. As they listen to the struggles and triumphs of their peers, they develop a deeper understanding of the complexities of addiction. This empathy allows them to offer support, encouragement, and a non-judgmental perspective. By empathizing with others, teens begin to develop a stronger sense of compassion for themselves, an essential component of their healing journey.
Accountability and Healthy Relationships:
In a group setting, teens are held accountable for their actions and choices. They learn to navigate healthy relationships, practice effective communication, and set boundaries. Group psychotherapy provides a platform for teens to develop essential life skills that promote healthy connections, encouraging them to maintain a supportive network even beyond the therapy sessions.
Group psychotherapy and counselling offer a powerful approach to help teens focus on what a healthy life means as they navigate addiction. By providing a supportive community, opportunities for shared understanding, peer learning, empathy, and accountability, group therapy empowers teenagers to embrace healthier choices and develop essential life skills. Let's continue to foster spaces that allow teens to find strength in numbers and build a foundation for a brighter, addiction-free future.

Group Therapy Benefits, Setting The Record Straight
Tumblr media
Group therapy has many benefits and is less intimidating than it sounds. There are groups that teach skills to help with communication, coping, and parenting. Other groups may be centered around support, such as a grief/bereavement group. Group therapy can focus on a variety of themes connected to self-growth and wellness.
We want to set the record straight and bust down some misconceptions about Group Therapy.
Other Group Members will Judge Me
Let’s break this one down. Yes, we cannot control if and what other people think about us. Though, everyone attending group therapy shares a common struggle and/or goal. The other group members are roughly working on the same thing and are in a similar situation as you. Often people who attend group therapy feel less alone and gain insight that they are not the only one struggling.
There is No Way to Guarantee Confidentiality
As mentioned above, we cannot control what other people do outside of session. Group Therapy often starts with developing rules within the group. The clinician leading the group will work with the group members to develop rules that everyone agrees upon. Amongst those rules is confidentiality and the importance of privacy.
It is Nerve-wracking to Share and Learn in a Big Group Setting
It is difficult to share one’s personal struggles with others, let alone with people we have never met. The clinician leading the group works with group members to provide a safe and supportive environment that helps foster growth. Many people find group therapy to be a place where they can reflect and gain perspective from other members with different backgrounds. Groups often have a limit to the number of members to ensure that everyone is heard and receives the amount of support they need.

Group Counseling Near Providence
Tumblr media
The differences between group counseling and individual therapy are clear. In individual counseling, there is one client and counselor. In group counseling there are multiple clients, and sometimes multiple counselors. Group counseling is roughly defined as at least five clients, and as high as 15. Sometimes in those higher reaches two or more counselors are employed to direct the session. Yet couples counseling is also a form of group therapy.

I keep thinking about how in the fight at Mustafar Obi-Wan keeps trying to appeal to Anakin’s moral and ethical obligations to the Jedi and the republic. and even his obligations to the galaxy at large as the “chosen one”. because Obi-Wan himself is driven by his moral obligations to the Jedi and he has trouble grasping that Anakin is driven by his emotions on a fundamental level. That’s who he is. Anakin doesn’t have “lapses of judgement”, he makes his judgements with his emotions and acts on them. When picking between his obligations and his emotions, Anakin will almost always choose his emotions. But Obi-Wan still tries to reason with Anakin even as he’s fighting him and Anakin just keeps countering his points with his insane logic…up until he can’t. And even then Obi-Wan still tries by reminding him that Anakin was chosen one and was supposed to defeat the Sith. Which is when Anakin lets his emotions take over and he tells Obi-Wan that he hates him. And I think it was at that point that Obi-Wan finally understood that Anakin’s emotions will take precedence over his logic. So maybe when Obi-Wan told Anakin he loved him, he was really trying to reason with him in a way he thought might work, maybe he was desperately trying to give Anakin one last chance to take everything back, maybe he was just so full grief and anger and love - love despite everything - that the words slipped out, maybe seeing what Anakin’s emotions did him and seeing what Obi-Wan’s indifference did to their relationship is what pushed Obi-Wan into finally letting himself feel all of emotions, maybe - maybe Obi-Wan thought if he could let himself feel, if he didn’t let go of his emotions, if he let himself admit what Anakin had already told him thousands of times, then he might be able to understand how things turned out this way, he might be able to know why Anakin’s emotions drove him to this, he might be able to feel the depth of Anakin’s pain and understand how it was so easy for Anakin’s love to turn to hate. Or maybe Obi-Wan was just a fool who had loved his brother dearly and needed him to know.

How am I supposed to be professional at work when one of our speakers does a whole presentation about how proud he is to be an lgbt+ ally, and then for the next hour our entire group talks about how the lgbt+ community and the disabled community are brothers in arms... don't mind the non-disabled gay group counselor (me) weeping in the corner
