Smalltown, Selfies, and Vampires

I've seen this game in production on Twitter a while back, and now its demo is out.

So now you're asking yourself " Is it really titled "#BLUD"?" and the answer is yes. #BLUD( a game being made by EXIT 73 Studios, and Developed by Humble Games) tells a story of Rebecca "Becky" Brewster, a new girl in who just moved in to her mother's old town of Carpentersville with her dad and coming across her mother's old Grimore CookBook, which contains: spells, monsters, and baking recipes in many different languages. Ontop of that, vampires have been showing up. So it's up to Becky and her friend Corey to take them on with her trusty field hockey stick.

The game is a top-down action adventure, done in a handrawn animation. The animation aesthetic ( done by Greg Lane or _TinHeart on Twitter) is like the old days of cartoon network(dexter's lab, powerpuff girls, 2 stupid dogs) and some nickelodeon tv shows (my life as a teenage robot, The Mighty B) around those artsyles. You solve puzzles, fight rats, Flys, roaches, and vampires, and take selfies around town.

The animation is smooth and well animated, being expressive, keeping idle animations well looped, along with simple colors. The voice acting is more of an animal crossing/splatoon like, making it easy for people who read faster than the voices. The music is simple and charming with jingles and loop arounds. The enemies are, of course, gross looking or the vampires the simple Nosferatu look.

The game handles well, being both gracious with your hit range and rough with your hit box. There were moments where I thought I wasn't in range of getting hit, but some enemies have a longer range than they should, but that gets evened out when you get your stick. Your story missions and story help is told through Perch(this game's Twitter) where Becky will post story focused problems and some of the town's citizens will comment of how to proceed and mark where you need to go or what to get with the "#". There are cute moments with where you can have Becky take a selfie with any pose you have with your disposal, and have responses with likes and comments.

While playing this, I came under the impression that the game is somewhat inspired by John Carpenter himself of some of his movies. The first is "The Thing" Poster hanging on Becky's wall, and the boss of the demo looks like the final variation of The Thing. Then again I tend to think to far.

So all in all, I'll be definitely be playing this in June 18, 2023. It's on steam with the demo as we speak, so why not give yourself a try and play for an hour or more

I've been eating up @raleigh-edward 's theory about hsr and lane possibly being something other than human, and it made me think...

Imagine lane’s death at the Siberia base wasn’t just /death/. We see that in hs1, vicky dies, goes to heaven, and passes a test that determines your enrollment in the academy for angels and demons. Which makes me think that lane might have gone through the same predicament. So, for three years, she could have been training in heaven’s academy—until something went wrong. What if she committed an act so unlawful that she was cast down, stripped of her wings (angel, demon, harmony bearer... it doesn't matter), and erased from her own memory, reborn on earth again without any recollection?

This twist would explain why cain recognizes her despite her lack of memory. If they shared a past in the heaven or the academy itself, his cryptic hints are him trying to remind her of it—without risking revealing too much because that too would have consequences for him, her, or the both of them. This makes me think about a moment in the last update where, if you romance greg and you follow him to the gym in s2ep4 (correct me if im wrong), there's a moment where he gives lane a t-shirt to put on because her clothes are soaking wet from the rain. The shirt he gives her reads "fallen angels," which in that moment it seemed like a cute, flirty sign of greg crushing on lane, but is it? Moreover, lane had already asked pileon in s1 if fallen angels are a mere human invention when she was trying to understand cain's behavior, and the demon explains to her that they do exist and tells her how they're casted out of heaven/hell, so she rules out this option for cain.

But what about herself?

Unlike ordinary humans, even after being expelled from heaven/hell, she could still have traces of her past angelic or demonic essence explaining any unusual abilities and why she’s drawn to different paths tied to two opposite divine forces (whisper of the devil or voice of god). In consequence, lane’s story might not just be one of survival but of rediscovering who—or what—she really is and what she's capable of doing. A fallen angel with a fractured past, navigating allegiances between realms that have shaped her destiny in ways she’s only beginning to understand. For that reason, her relationship with cain might not just be about romance (if you're romancing him, that is), but more about uncovering the full truth of her own identity.

Just imagine the layers this could add to her story: a human life taken away by an accident (or was it?), her ascension to heaven, her mortal existence a punishment—or a second chance—by forces beyond her control, and now having her humanity function as a mask over a forgotten divinity that needs to be awakened.

I romance Greg (HS:R) and Cassiel (ABH) and both of them have lost their sisters. But, Cassiel's romance route doesn't only focus on his grief. We get to know him as a character and a lover. I can't say the same for Greg because almost every romantic interaction revolves around us hiding the truth about his late sister. Even Dmitry's and Yan's personal issues aren't dragged out that much. As much as I love Greg, I'm tired of being given the bare minimum. Sometimes, I wonder if Alexandra deliberately making us wait that long for Emma's reveal because she has no idea what to do with Greg? It sucks because while I do like HS:R, the author gives me no reason to read the book, aside from the plot.

Listen, I understand why fans would say something like that but I've had enough seeing Greg and Anna getting the brunt end of either Alexandra's confusion or lack of interest in writing their romance. She's good at moving the plot forward, but her preferential treatment is so obvious when it comes to LIs.
