@joemomrgneissguy SPACE MINING. HO BOY.
So when mining comes into a conversation, there are several 'laws' of mining and processing that I like to consider that people tend to forget:
Location and rarity of commodity
Location and rarity of extraction techniques/reagents
What is necessary for this operation to work?
Where does the finished product go?
Some of these are extraneous. Theoretically, we don't have to care that iron is common on earth and might be present on the moon, so it changes the conversation from "why?" to "how would we?". Same with extraction and reagents. If you don't care how expensive it is to ship- for example: water and carbon dioxide to the moon because you want to process He-3, nothing can stop you.
However, what will stop planning, is processing. Blowing up a rock is easy. Collecting the rock and breaking it into a usable form is not. If there isn't a plan for exactly what commodity is being mined and how to separate it and all the equipment that needs to be made to get it into a usable form, and a plan to get that equipment into space. God help the poor bastard.
And fundamentally, no matter HOW you turn it, people use the finished product. If there are no people where you are mining the Thing, you need to have a way for the Thing to get back to the people who need it. WHY are you mining the Thing? What is economic about the Thing being made? and Is it worth the money?
[angry geologist rant under the cut]
So the thing about space and asteroids is metals come in native form a lot of the time because there's nothing to oxidize them; it makes processing simpler and the density increases profit. This is usually what people talk about when they go off about space mining: Ohh, if we just reach this asteroid 400 years away there's so much Gold and Platinum! Ohh, if we just crashed a FUCKING ASTEROID INTO EARTH OR MARS we could be so rich!
However this is a LIE for two reasons: It's actually harder to process straight sulfides or straight metal because they aren't brittle. Instead of breaking into smaller pieces you can separate and process, they jam the crusher. Universities with mining departments often have huge chunks of impressive high-grade sitting around that were donated by companies when they jammed their fucking system. If you can't break it down, it's a useless fucking clump of rock.
Secondly, even if you have native metals clumped together like an iron-nickel asteroid, unless you want an iron-nickel product, you have to separate them. Since it's not brittle, you would have to pour a bunch of hydrochloric on it and wait for the reaction to dissolve the outer surface.
And all this is assuming the metals are on Earth. If not, you have to figure out how to do this in space. How much HCl will you need? How are you going to fly it up there? How are you going to break it down? How are you going to replace parts when they inevitably break?
The big "commodity" on the moon is Helium-3, which is extremely rare on Earth. (So yes, we have a need, and yes, there's substantial reason to mine it in a place where it's more accessible.) The logic starts breaking down around "getting it back" and "how does the operation work": In moon quantities (up to 15 parts per billion (ppb)), you have to mine about 150 tons to extract 1g of He-3. That's not unreasonable, to be honest, since economic gold hovers around 7-12 ppb. And technically you'd only have to heat the rock to 600-700 C. However, things do melt at those temperatures. Then you have to get it back to earth. Either a SpaceX-style return and come back, or a drop shipments- It's just insane to me though that we would use SO MANY RESOURCES to rip up the fucking moon, even with an automated system, when if you look at He-3 we already produce what equals 11 pounds of He-3 yearly from Oil and Gas deposits, it's just not collected.
I have more beef with planets that are theoretically resource-rich, but people just- don't care about getting them back to Earth? Venus has significant metal-Sulfides and Tellurides in its atmosphere, which is why people joke about the "floating oxygen colonies" on Venus. But congratulations! You've colonized a planet that is inaccessible to human technology because anything we've ever designed will dissolve. Same with Europa. To design something that works on Venus - not to mention extracts things in the proper form to be used in human conditions - and/or get them back to Earth means redesigning how we think of the properties of the periodic table.
With extraction, we play a lot with oxidation states, and one of the rules is to stay within Earth's aqueous conditions. If you oxidize anything too much, your solution will want to vaporize to oxygen. Reduce anything too much, and your solution will want to vaporize to hydrogen gas.
So, if you design anything on Earth designed for conditions on Venus, it will be unstable. If you design anything on Venus meant for Earth, it will be unstable.
Which is kind of the end of my rant, I guess. Don't crash something into Earth unless you can process it. If you can process it in space, can you get it back? Who's responsible when the thing breaks? Why the fuck is money being spent when 9 times out of 10 we have it here on earth with the conditions we're familiar with?
If we've somehow depleted Earth enough that we need resources from other planets, which would insinuate we have not figured out how to recycle our own metals, which is untrue, and likewise we have no business in space anyway- Where did all our resources go? Are we leaving for those other planets? Do we have faster-than-light travel to collect the new resources in a timely manner?
There isn't even water in space half the time and if you do have a colony on Mars and tech bros are going to process all the hematite to build their shitty underground Martian city, are they shipping water from the north and south poles to do this? Have they figured out how to renew the carbon filters that are going to be needed to get all the waste and organics out of it once it's used?
In my opinion, it's all just fucking stupid. Space mining tries to answer a question that doesn't need to be asked with people who don't know how mineral processing works who haven't thought what the logistics require and don't care that entropy demands even minerals in stasis don't last forever. But it's ~new~ and the dollar signs on metallic asteroids gleam in their eyes and I want to take out Elon Musk's kneecaps.
#Apparently a team in Europe proposed a way to separate Fe2O3 while producing oxygen. Which is definitely a step forward.#But I still say the actual water and reagents used to process rock to element are non-circular enough that it's a huge hindrance.#Anyway! Space mining! Quickest way to expose a techbro dipshit is ask where they'll get the water for iron oxide separation.#Fix our own planet and close the circuits in hydrometallurgy and then we can talk about space mining.#mining#geology#mineral processing#I hope this was actually legible and coherent lol. I didn't spend as much time on it as I did on the Gold one.#I hate space mining and gold mining for the greed and colonialist mindset.

Closed Starter for @unhinged-greed
"So do you think he and Fizz are okay in there?" Chaz asked, his tail idly swaying in the water of the fountain he was sitting at, him and his boyfriends currently on the edge of the gluttony palace grounds, having rushed over in Striker's truck upon hearing about the killings and the lock down at the masquerade ball.
" Well given they just said two dead I doubt someone as famous as those two ended up with anything worse then a scratch..." Striker said, trailing his claw over the barrier keeping them out, pondering a bit while his partners sat on the side
"I mean we p-probably shouldn't get so worked up. I-It's Ozz, and he'd bl-blow up hell before letting someone lay a hand on Fizz. Not to mention Mamm-Mamm's there too, th-there bo-both useful to him, so least he-he's invested in there safety." Robo said hopping down, walking around to lean on the Barrier next to Striker, the cowboy rolling his eyes.
"Nearly forgot that bastard was with him.. Well least he;s useful to someone for a change, maybe..." The cowboy sighed, massaging his temples
Robo nodding his head as he stood "Yea-Yeah, so we just wait probably, should be chill, I m-mean all the drama's insi-inside ri-" Robo said before a sharp wind blew past him, making his hat tails fly in the wind as both Striker and Chaz's eyes widened
"Uhhh some friends of yours Robo...?" Chaz asked pointing behind him, makingg Robo cock his head to the side in confusion, turning around to see two nearly identical Fizzbots with blue eyes and dark outfits punching and biting at the barrier wildly, making him even more confused
"G-Girls?!" He questioned, recognizing the two as his sisters, Mammon's helpers, Coin and Penny, but he'd never seen them this worked up before

Sea swallow me; my rosary
Break into pearls; let breakers hurl
Them unto the rocks; between the docks
Shining silver stars; opalescent glint
Like the look in my father's eyes when he saw the gold.
Sea swallow me; let the deep
Take me down; let him keep
His empty hands, grasping; unable
To choose between gold and girl
Before both left him hollow.

Since @amphiptere-art started talking about dying fire trying to redeem himself and apologize and be better and all that, now I'm thinking about Gold and Kitten's relationship dynamic. In one way, it would make sense for things to be okay but awkward between them but on the other hand, them being super close would also be super cute.
@madcatdaderpydrawer-blog
Also I don't think I ever gave Gold a defined appearance and/or color scheme but the idea of him asking if he could be the same shade of brown as Kitten would be super adorable. Meaning that Gold is not at all gold in color would also be amusing. Possibly Gold's color scheme is brownies and blondies, so a rich darker brown and a tan lighter brown. Kitten likes desserts and Gold is dessert colored. Okay this part is just kind of silly. The idea of Gold's rays being treated like you would nails, so they are constantly changing colors and patterns, usually by the request of Kitten.
Kitten referring to Gold as either Goldie or Big Brother (while the others are older/younger brother/cousin)
Kitten knowing his original moon and monty didn't love him and probably never would, but his original sun came to him to apologize and he at least has one brother from his original universe and that's special. Kitten has metaphorical scars on his hands from trying to pick up the shattered pieces of what he thought was a family, but Gold intentionally got scars too because he helped pick out the pieces that could be saved... this metaphor sounded a lot better in my head.
I'm just having emotions about Gold and Kitten being close
And also Kitten possibly getting upset with Blue Moon for always being so hostile towards his Big Brother and Dad when he thinks Kitten isn't paying attention. Kitten is pretty ditzy but he is also fiercely protective of his family and isn't going to stand by while Blue Moon belittles them.
Gold apologized and is an amazing brother now. And Greed loves Kitten unconditionally and has never intentionally hurt him. Greed shouldn't be judged by any other monty's actions because Greed has been taking good care of Kitten before he even met Blue Moon.

Hello! I'm in the middle of an argument. As one of the foremost Ling lovers, would you say he is more Gold coded or Silver coded?
Right now, the argument for gold is his original look with the golden coat and how gold is usually the metal prominently used for royalty and how he would lean into it.
The silver argument is how Ling dropped his gold happy demeanor when his showed his true self and during his time with greed. From that point on he only wore black and gray and silver, which yes is a Greed preference but we can see Ling liking it too.
Either way, Ling starts the story gold and ends silver, so we're having issues making a choice.
Would love to hear ur opinion <3
WHAT AN AMAZING QUESTION OMG
Just as you say, Ling could be considered both Gold coded and Silver coded, since if we look at the symbolism of each metal we can visualize certain qualities of his persona. Although, if you and your friend read my rambling about Ling's relationship with his mother, you can realize that I interpret Ling as a boy who was never allow to discover himself. He is a tool or an end to achieve something.
And I think Ling himself is aware of that, he knows that before being a person, he is a title, he is an heir, a future king.
Gold is related to royalty, of course, but also to greed, to the unattainable and sick desire to want more and more; FMA puts a lot of emphasis on Ling being a greedy person (not for nothing does he become one with Greed), but is he really? More than greedy I would describe Ling as someone desperate.
A fundamental part of Ling's character is how he is willing to do whatever it takes to save his people, to get to the throne. AND YET, HE GIVEN UP (technically) THREE TIMES.
The first time inside Gluttony, the second time by accepting the stone and the third time by offering the stone to Edward.
Ling claims to live for his people, to be a person who seeks to reach the top and save his country and yet he gave up 3 times.
Ling agreed to die inside Gluttony, or perhaps, a part of Ling wanted to die there. It is a recurring gag of his character to faint when he is hungry, but sometimes it seems that he does it on purpose, to tempt people's good faith and get free food, or maybe the damn guy is hypoglycemic, we don't know…But still, are you really going to tell me that a warrior, someone who has been trained all his life, someone who has survived multiple assassination attempts, can't stand not eating for a day?
It was established earlier in the manga that Edward is someone who really needs to eat for two people, sleep more than a normal person because his body demands much more than normal and yet he didn't give up in there, he lifted a body much heavier than his own and kept going. But Ling didn't?
If Ling died inside Gluttony no one would ever have to know what happened, no one in Xing would ever know that the prince of the Yao clan gave up and decided to finally rest. No one would ever blame him because no one would ever know. It's perfect.
The second time, when he accepted the stone. Ling knew he could die there, there was no guarantee of survival, he was completely vulnerable and yet he did it. Ling is of no use to his people being dead, in fact, his clan is completely doomed if he dies AND HE STILL DID IT. Because who could blame him if he died? Everyone would know that he did it seeking immortality, that he did it for his people. It's another perfect way for him to die.
ALSO, something very curious about that moment (It's one of my favorite Ling moments, really) is that Ling is clearly scared, he's terrified by what's happening and what does he do? He pretends to be confident. He acts as if it's all part of his plan, as if he really wanted that. He tells Edward to shut up when he tries to help him, maybe because he didn't want to hear his own fear in the alchemist's voice. But the interesting thing here is that when he's giving his speech, Ling shouts "They don't know who they're dealing with! I'm the future emperor of Xing…I'm Ling Ya-" SEE?!! He doesn't manage to finish saying his name, he only clearly says his title before writhing in pain. (im delusional)
Big parenthesis, I don't mean to say that Ling doesn't want to be help his clan/his people, or that he's not someone who is completely crazy to achieve his goals, he is, that man is insane just read his first conversation with Greed in chapter 55 of the manga. I love Ling and I think he's the best character but at least I don't see him just as someone confident who wants to be king, for me there's a lot of trauma, fear and so much repressed desire behind that mask. I mean, there's a scene in the manga (MY FAVORITE) that sadly didn't make it to the anime, where Ling faces Envy, showing himself arrogant and overbearing but the second Envy leaves Ling rips off his mask and you can see how scared he was. That moment for me is fundamental for his character, it's the only proof that is needed to effectively say "Ling is not really the person he says he is."
I 100% believe that the decision to stay and fight with Gluttony wasn't because he wanted to help the Elrics or because he wanted the Philosopher's Stone inside the homunculus, but because he felt he had to do it after Lan Fan ripped off her own arm, not in a sense of revenge or anything like that, but more like "If she sacrificed so much for me the least I have to do is sacrifice myself too" as a way to prove his worth. So therefore, the decision to accept Greed wasn't completely his, but rather he felt he had to do it. I don't know if I make myself clear…
Now, the third time: when he offers the stone to Edward to bring Alphonse back. I think that one is pretty obvious. After everything he lost, after everything he fought for, after almost dying on multiple occasions and after the trauma, Ling was willing to throw all that away, the future of his clan and the key to the throne, in a second. Without hesitation. Why? Isn't he the one who said that Amestris' problems weren't his problems? It could be argued that Edward was someone important to Ling at that time, but someone greedy, someone who truly wanted to become the emperor of Xing wouldn't have sacrificed his chance for a boy he might never see again. But Ling offered the stone.
It could also be argued that there is no guarantee that the stone's full power would be used to bring Alphonse back, that Ling would still have the stone to take to Xing, but Ling is not an alchemist, he does not know what the stone can really do, he does not know how human transmutation works, there was the possibility of losing what he worked so hard to find, and yet he offered the stone.
Ling could be gold, just like you say, at the beginning of the story yellow, his arrogance and his title of prince is what characterizes him the most, even gold is related to immortality. At first glance Ling is gold, but just as I mentioned many times, Ling does not really show who he is. Ling lives behind a facade, behind a character that he has built throughout his life. Ling is not gold, Ling wants you to believe that he is because he wants to believe it too.
Silver symbolizes protection and truth. It is a material that was commonly used to make mirrors. Silver is the color of persistence and the struggle of the soul in the search for freedom, and I feel that is what Ling is: Searching for freedom. Someone who wants to be free but can never really be. A never-ending search.
If I had to choose between gold and silver, Ling would be silver, but the interesting thing here is that Ling would think he is gold, everyone around him has told him that he is (or should be) so that is what he believes.
Although, if you ask me personally what mineral I associate with Ling it is obsidian. Obsidian is attributed to royalty and divinity; it is an extremely resistant mineral so in ancient times it was used to make weapons. But most importantly, obsidian is associated with the earth and sacrifice.
If I had to describe Ling with one word it would be that one, sacrifice.
SORRY FOR THE RAMBLE, SERIOUSLY. I don't know if I really made myself clear, I'm not very good at writing my thoughts or character analysis, but I really hope you find all the shit I said helpful or at least interesting. I really love reading what people have to say about Ling!! Loved the question, thanks for letting me participate in your little discussion <3
(I ALSO APOLOGIZE IF I TOOK A LONG TIME TO RESPOND, I GOT TOO EXCITED AND COULDN'T STOP TALKING, I EVEN WENT TO THE MANGA TO CONFIRM LING'S MOMENTS.)
#fma#ling yao#It's funny how at first glance Ling looks like gold while Edward looks like silver (or steel in his case)#but it's actually the other way around.#If we're talking about someone who's greedy#it's actually Edward.#Don't forget: everybody wants something they don't have#Greed was so correct when he said that
