A Fire Story: Graphic Novel Review
Brian Fies recounts his experience of losing his home to the 2017 California wildfires, blending personal anecdotes, survivor stories, and vivid artwork in A Fire Story.
Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) ‘ON MONDAY, MY HOUSE DISAPPEARED.’ That’s the first, big, bold line of A Fire Story, the graphic novel memoir where artist Brian Fies recollects losing his home to the devastating California wildfires in 2017 and the aftermath. Brian Fies takes readers to 1 a.m. on October 9, 2017, when he and his wife woke up in their home to the smell of smoke and an…

(I try to remind myself of all the reasons I don’t want to die, but the problem isn’t that I want to die. The problem is that I want to live too much for the world to contain me, and I need to break free of myself before it kills me.)

Part graphic novel, part memoir, Wake is an imaginative tour-de-force that tells the story of women-led slave revolts and chronicles scholar Rebecca Hall’s efforts to uncover the truth about these women warriors who, until now, have been left out of the historical record.

Kabul Disco: Graphic Novel Review
Nicolas Wild’s Kabul Disco captures his life as an expat artist in Kabul, where he’s tasked with illustrating the Afghan constitution for children.
⭐⭐⭐⭐ Rating: 4 out of 5. Sneha Jaiswal (Twitter | Instagram) This graphic novel by French artist Nicolas Wild has a clickbait tagline – How I managed to not be abducted in Afghanistan. So, I’ll have to admit that I felt slight cheated at the end, since as a reader you keep waiting for something explosive to happen, where the author is ‘almost abducted’, but manages to hoodwink the villains…

Staff Pick: Weirdo
Written by Tony Weaver, Jr.
Illustrated by Jes & Cin Wibowo
(Editor's note: This book deals with suicidal thoughts and a suicide attempt. The attempt is not depicted. If you or someone you know needs help you can call or text 988 to reach the 988 Suicide and Crisis Hotline (US & Canada).)
Tumblr media
Fantastic juvenile graphic novel about the importance of being yourself.
Tony has changed schools many times due to bullying, but at his new school, after the help of therapy, he meets a new group of friends who he can be himself around - and in turn he teaches them how to be themselves. He also teaches them to stand up for the things they love and the people they love.
The epilogue states:
“It can be a challenge to be who you are or envision what you can be. But even when the darkness makes you feel alone there's always someone in your corner. Sometimes it's the people you least expect. People that will show up for you. People that will grow with you on your journey. Find love for yourself. Share that love with others and I promise you'll be the hero of your own story.”
I highly recommend this graphic novel! It's great for readers who enjoy graphic novels by Raina Telgemeier, Jerry Craft, and Kayla Miller.
