they probably met when kabru was a kid!- neither of them showed signs of recognizing each other the entire time mithrun was introduced nor when they were together. and im pretty sure KABRU of all people would show some kind of recognition if they'd met before. it's kabru!!! the people person!!! mr. "i-noted-down-50+-characters-in-this-dude's-backstory-for-fun-and-actually-enjoy-social-gatherings"

you would think some kind of memory would come back to him especially after hearing mithrun’s backstory if milsril had even told kabru about him as a kid. but nope. it’s just fan speculation unless there's a side comic suggesting otherwise that i haven't seen

mithrun doesn't care about kabru, his shapeshift double looked like shit!- it's obviously because of mithrun's (then) lack of desires that it looked like that, but they really grow on each other

i think it's safe to assume it'd look more like kabru after they spent so much time together (also laios can barely even remember kabru's name..also saw his face multiple times and didn’t recognize him when they talked for the first time)

mithrun is racist!- he’s actually the least likely character to be racist since he lost his desires and that includes a desire for superiority over others. he even calls his past self out on that part of himself. the other elves in that side comic were being just as racist to shorter lived races but just didn’t use ‘outdated slurs’

(unfortunately literally every main character in dunmeshi is at least a lil prejudiced, but I believe it’s worldbuilding and a sign of the times rather than a reason ryoko kui is giving to hate each character)

taking care of others is a pain in the ass!- saying this as a reason kabru and mithrun shouldn't be together is basically saying disabled people shouldn't be allowed to have romantic relationships because they're a "burden"...if someone is actually willing to put in the work, then let them be.

that's not even all of their relationship, mithrun is the fighter of their duo and kabru would've been killed by the shapeshifter or something if he'd fallen down the hole on his own since he sucks at fighting monsters. mithrun helps collect ingredients for cooking every time, too (barometz fruits and griffin egg). he pulls his weight and then some!! i feel like people forget that part of mithrun a lot somehow.

+senshi literally cooks for everyone all time. it's kind of an important aspect of the narrative.

+also, while it is a popular fan thing I see around that kabru handfeeds mithrun, he literally never does lol this is mithrun using his own hands to eat:

just saying because people like to treat mithrun like a baby even though the narrative respects him as a capable adult who also has special needs because of an accident. he’s captain for a reason

kabru hates taking care of mithrun!- not exactly, he was initially surprised and put off but got used to it quickly. i’m sure he’s grateful for all the times mithrun saved him from a monster and teleported them out of danger as well

he even starts doing “unnecessary” things for mithrun’s comfort and safety like when mithrun pushes himself too hard fighting, even after his mission to take care of him was complete when the canaries came back

here is even kabru resting while mithrun keeps watch (mithrun let him sleep for 5 hours before waking him up from the nightmare earlier, too):

there's nothing more to their relationship!- they actually have had a very tight and consistent dynamic since they met and they incite the most change within each other by the end. kabru is the one who inspires mithrun to create new desires so he doesn't waste away, and mithrun is the first person we see kabru being genuine with and it leads him to be more honest with others by the end instead of tiptoeing around everyone all the time (that mask was also the reason some ppl initially disliked kabru…)

kabru’s relationship with mithrun is honestly so important for his character and vice versa, but it’s often disregarded because of one over exaggerated aspect of it (an aspect that isn’t even the first way they interact with each other) or because people want to just straight up ignore it for some reason 🥲🥲

kui dedicates many panels to them that don't particularly serve the narrative as a whole in order to demonstrate this and i think that's pretty significant

you're taking this too seriously!- as if i'm the first person in the world to be crazy about a ship or the characters 😭 i love analyzing text and it's upsetting to see them mischaracterized when kui lays out the characters so clearly and deliberately

would rather kms than make my only winbre post be about Suo's stupid ass, so it's time to talk about Nirei cause i love him. i read a post and my blood started boiling i dont fuck around so now i gotta defend him with my life. also cause im sick and tired of him not being deemed marketable enough to be included in merch and collab illusts when he's a whole—if not the most important—third of the main trio. (theres something to be said about Tsugeura too, considering they don't use him but love using Kiryuu, but that's a different conversation.)

anyway, on Nirei and the exceptionality of being ordinary.

manga spoilers btw also disclaimer im not eloquent at all i just say things.

there's something about Nirei that just simply isn't special and i think that's wonderful. not in a mean-spirited sense; Nirei is the most regular out of anyone in Furin, so much so that he had to buy an ugly shirt he didn't even like to stand out. he's just a kid with a notebook and a simple backstory trying to follow a hero's example. he's nothing extraordinary, especially seeing the people he's surrounded by. physically, he's very limited, which he knows and doesn't ignore at all, so he can't do much in fights. no one is more acutely aware of his own limits than Nirei. i was reading the first couple chapters again and it breaks my heart to hear his efforts be dismissed as "playing hero," because Nirei is the biggest hero in this whole manga.

it's true, yeah, he can't fight. he's more like another average citizen of Makochi than he is a Bofurin member sometimes. he lacks fighting abilities, his diplomacy isn't particularly the best, and he's two seconds away from going into cardiac arrest at almost all times. but it's not like he gives a shit. every single time he gets beaten into the ground, he picks himself back up immediately. he takes hit after hit, time and time again, because no matter how battered or defenseless he is, his drive to stay and protect the town is ridiculously strong. he does go down when he can't take any more (keel), but it's with improvement and training that he manages to throw his first—albeit useless—punch (noroshi or whatever this arc is called idk). improvement that, mind you, comes from recognizing his own limitations.

some have called him reckless (Suo), but i disagree, because Nirei is right. i know the kids would rather look out for him and have him uninjured by the end of a scuffle, but he doesn't need to be coddled. everybody else jumps into a brawl and gets a broken nose regardless of their fighting skills. Nirei isn't any different. he knows he's limited, he knows he can't fight, he knows he's nothing special. he risks it all anyway, because even though he wasn't built for fighting, he's more than prepared to try over and over again until his efforts are enough to make a difference. he's looked at Sakura's back and thought he couldn't match him, that Sakura gets back up even when he's almost fully tapped out, that he's not needed because Sakura's stronger and will be okay without him.

maybe he's right about this, too. i'm inclined to disagree, but i understand where he's coming from. Nirei chases, Nirei can't stop running because he'll fall behind all these phenomenal beasts that can hold their own. i'm so glad the conclusion he reached was "okay, i gotta step up my game," but i'm not really surprised. this is Nirei Akihiko we're talking about and, i think Suo put it best, he wants to become stronger more than anybody.

he's been at a disadvantage this whole time, "playing hero" rather than being an "actual" hero, but he has a goal. if he has to tear himself apart to stand next to Sakura, he will. he doesn't have to, of course, he's already more than useful the way he is, but when you're so ordinary that you get lost in the crowd, standing beside someone so exemplary makes you want more.

honestly, Nirei's fucking wild. lil bro's actually crazy. we've seen characters go apeshit, but no one in this entire manga is nearly as insane as he is. i appreciate Suo telling him to slow down and chill out, cause he was fully intending to kill himself learning how to fight with zero foundation. my guy was more than ready to actually fight Endo. he meant that. it's a good thing he's properly learning how to defend himself, considering he probably lacks the muscle to go on the offense. those are his limits and he knows that. it frustrates him, but it definitely does little to stop him, because look how big his back is. i hope somebody tells him, after all of this is over, that he's doing more than enough, more than great.

to be fair, fighting isn't even where he shines, and that's okay. he's not strong enough to beat anyone's ass and he doesn't need to be, either. he doesn't need to be a leader like Sakura or a devotee like Sugishita or mimic whatever the fuck Suo's got going on. in the words of my favorite pink curse, the real heroes are the ones who support from the back, and that's exactly what Nirei does. he's said it himself, he wants to guide Sakura all the way to the top and he can, because he thrives in being another citizen of Makochi. he's a regular person and i think that's what makes him so compelling and important.

there's something so fascinating about his simplicity. he really is nothing more than just an ordinary kid. put him in a normal high-school classroom and he'll pass his midterms with a 75. he recognizes what he's good at, of course, he knows the town inside out and it's very useful, especially to Sakura. he's amazing support. it really doesn't seem like it and people love to completely dismiss him, but i wanna be outrageous and call him the backbone of these kids. he was Sakura's first friend and he continues to be the one pushing and prodding to make sure he stands back up every single time. he's more necessary than anyone gives him credit for. i have no doubt in my mind that, if it weren't for him, Sakura wouldn't be able to do half the things he's managing. even Suo, who's out here acting like he knows the secrets of the universe, has to stop and reorganize his ideas when Nirei talks.

if Suo is the heart (debatable, but okay, whatever bro says) and brain, i'd like to think Nirei is the spirit and the soul. there's no chance the kids would work so smoothly without Nirei around—which, yes, arguably the same could be said of all of them, but i've seen Nirei be dismissed as a Zenitsu looking ass gag character and i've never had to hold back a kys so hard. idk for sure what the general consensus on him is cause i've only ever seen him used in the context of ships and never on his own, which honestly makes me a little sad. especially after seeing the popularity poll cause he didn't even make it into the top 5 with not even 1k points personal offense tbh i need a word with the voters. what i've gathered is that aint nobody gaf about his ass im devastated Suo has to fuck off (13k votes is crazy gang come on). which i don't understand. take him out of the equation and everything falls apart. Sakura's the sword, Suo's the strategy, and Nirei is the ambition, the desire, the force, the feelings.

there's much to be said about how he's treated, not only in-universe, but also by the people consuming the media and the pr team. i don't fuck with shipping, but when i'm scrolling through my timeline, Nirei only exists in the context of somebody's favorite ship. and don't fucking get me started on the mischaracterization. look me in the eye and tell me Nirei doesn't have more conviction than any of these dumbass kids. yes, he gets scared and he's fucking horrified most of the time, but motherfucker he's fighting. he's out there in the frontlines, making himself useful, biting more than he can chew and then some. i dare you to treat him like wittle baby that needs protection.

if not for his uniqueness, look at him for his regularity, because i find it endearingly wonderful. i think there's something so special about the ordinary. he deserves a lot more than what he's getting so these mfs better put him in all collab illusts cause if i have to see Kaji in his place one more time i will personally book a flight. okay thank you thats all i promise ill never come back here have day.

Previously on BnHA: Kacchan figured out how to control his quirk upgrade and was totally chill and normal about it. Definitely not terrifying at all. He actually spent the entire chapter smiling and laughing like the wholesome little boy he is. I don’t know why Kid For One is so freaked out about it. He even politely introduced himself using his childhood nickname. Clearly he just wants to be friends with you, KFO!

Today on BnHA: Horikoshi is all “sorry to keep you waiting, here’s the AFO and Yoichi flashback you ordered at long last” and proceeds to serve a nightmarish stew of HUMAN MISERY and RATS and STABBING and CARNAGE and SO MUCH MURDER and THE SINGLE MOST FUCKED-UP CASE OF CODEPENDENCY ANYONE HAS EVER WRITTEN. small and weak, but also so, so cute. all of the cuteness genes went straight to him. no wonder AFO was jealous

(ETA: just want to press pause for a second to speculate about what type of twins AFO and Yoichi are, since it has some relevance to the story, and especially to the OFA/AFO quirk lore. so! at first glance the two of them would appear to be fraternal twins, just based on the fact that they have very different appearances, and also the fact that Yoichi doesn’t have the AFO quirk – no holes in his hands, etc. identical twins are born from the same fertilized egg, so in theory they would both have the same sequence of DNA, which means Yoichi would have had the same quirk as AFO. but that doesn’t appear to be the case. so all of that points to them being fraternal, not identical.

on the other hand, there is one piece of evidence in this chapter that does support them being identical twins, and that’s the fact that per the narration, AFO absorbed most of the nutrients from their mother. a few minutes of google fu informed me that this condition is relatively rare, and only happens in cases where two twins share a placenta, which typically is only the case for identical twins. HOWEVER, for what it’s worth, there have also been rare instances where two fraternal twin placentas fuse together and become a single placenta. AND this apparently also increases the chances of one of the twins gaining more of the nutrients and causing the other twin to have a lower birth weight.

so based on the evidence here, my conclusion is that the two of them are most likely fraternal twins with a case of placental fusion. besides, you can’t tell me that stealing his baby brother’s placenta while the two of them are literally still in the womb doesn’t sound like exactly the type of BS that fetus!AFO would pull, lol.)

Oooh I like duke su from the show but the one from the novel sounds so much more interesting tbh I love a morally grey character with his own goals who doesn't give a f*ck what the lead is trying to do but has their own agenda and it's a much slower burn. Though with how Chinese dramas operate these days it's no wonder they made him like the FL and start helping her extremely early I don't think they know or even can with how netizens are write anything else.

Though I too love novel Su guogong, I think we're in a real quandary for the adaption.

The censors won't let him be characterized as black as the novel version AND be allowed to survive (see: Eternal Brotherhood where we can have a main character who is a dark schemer with blood on his hands that adores his wife -- only because he's doomed, doomed, doomed!) Boooooo!!! I do not agree that this softening was required for this work nor Story of Kunning Palace. Grr!!

But the change to make the FL and ML interact much more and work together in the 1st half, rather than him observing coldly and uncaring about her life or death -- imo that's a quandary about different mediums and how the audience reacts to them.

I wrote a lil meta post previously about the live action adaption of MDZS and why imo the production was forced to change the WWX and LWJ backstory. Once they decided on a linear storyline, imo the otp had to eventually be friends in his first life with a mutually acknowledged bond. The audience simply CANNOT be asked to wade through 20+ hours of episodes before LWJ as love interest isn't repeatedly rejecting the protagonist. 25 episodes and weeks in real-time of him being only cold & standoffish is too much for most viewers. When consuming the novel, the reader both won't have that stretched out real time delay until the couple are on the same page. And it won't take them 20 hours of reading to get there.

Things hit different for a crafted romance on page than performed live on screen for a 40-50 episode drama.

I can still see the adaption's struggle with this. Su suogong is truly a minor character in the novel and frankly not an active participant in most of the problem > scheme > resolution sub-arcs. He has this whole other full life of his own separate interests happening..... somewhere else. The novel mostly leaves his weekly activities as a black box, an obscured mystery. Drama boy is out there somewhere moving his chess pieces & murdering people for power but the reader often just sees glimpses of him ominously sipping his tea & ordering his minions around. In order raise him to a main, the drama is forced to make him involve himself in the play much earlier - to give him a reason to be on screen that is fully tied in with the main plot & its themes. He has to care about FL by the 9th hour in, and want to support her.... or give up ML status to Ye Shijie. 🤷

We can see the strain of this as 3 episodes may happen and all the screenwriter can do is have Su guogong show up for 5 minutes just to flirt a little and remind viewers he's alive 😂😂 but that's what you gotta do with 40 episodes tbh. I can't disgree that this is a more enjoyable viewing experience.

Possibly do ^^this chapter from Alphard’s POV and then have an interlude that’s Sirius’ POV

Make all that^^ the end of a chapter to leave everyone on a miserable cliffhanger after Alphard gets captured

Start with some pandalilly content the chapter after :)

Have a nice but angsty lil James and Sirius moment when they debrief about Monty dying and Alphard getting caught

Silly goofy scene of mary catching pandalily while they’re trying to break in and get lilly’s research

More of a panic attack then a breakdown cos i feel like that's more his forte)

The entire bit from when vi and crew make it to rescue vander up until the end of the episode will possibly be its own chapter? At least a VERY sizeable chunk of the chapter

I'd love to start the scene with a "As (description of whatever happens and regulus throws in the bomb), (insert number here) things happened all at once." and then describe how the bomb rolls in and bounces. And each time it bounces, do a description of one of the aforementioned things happens. I dunno how to fully describe it, I may have to write out a snippet and make a post on that to fully describe but AGH! it is SO good in my head)

Peter becomes obsessed with the innocent looking Y/N, who is so much more than she seems. She's got a hidden backstory and always wears long sleeves. Peter saves her and lets her finally know it's okay to not be okay. He'll be here for her rain or shine.

He first saw her when they were waiting in the hall for detention, he wondered what a small Lil innocent girl in a cute cow sweater was doing here surly she must be in the wrong place. He listened in as she talked with the guy near the door.” is this detention?”, “yeah just gotta wait for the teacher.. hey ain't you an honor student what are you doing here?”,” Oh well, Mr. Hendrix wouldn't let me go to the bathroom”, “Oh yeah he's a bitch but he'll usually let you during the last 10 min if you can hold it”, “this wasn't the kinda thing that could be held and I bled threw my pants and into the chair and so I waited till everyone else left and I took the chair and put it on his desk”, “Damm, but why are you were he should be disciplined”, “my behavior wasn't showing mature conflict resolution apparently but he did get talked to”. Peter thinks damn lil badass her looks are deceiving... I'll have to drop by Mr Hendrix later.

They go in and she sits in the back he takes the desk next to hers, fascinated he glances at her and sees she's actually doing homework. He draws but his sharpie dies and he starts cursing under his breath, she sees this and takes out a pen and taps his leg he's about to snap when he turns but just sees her holding out a kinda fancy-looking pen. He asks if it's for him, and she says it is, he takes it and nods thanks. He checks out the pen and it's nice, one side sharpie marker one side fine tip. When detention is over she's out the door so quickly he has to hurry after her. “hey your pen”, she stops and turns, looking him up and down, “You can keep it”.

He keeps the pen treasures it and works on a drawing for her, he's obsessed and starts following her, finds her locker, where she sits at lunch, and what she eats, he learns everything he can. He notices something else about her, a change in how her wardrobe changes going from cute colorful sweater outfits to jeans and a hoodie or jacket and band teas, he didn't expect her to listen to those bands. He notices how her makeup changes no more colorful intricate looks and turns into slept-in tight liner. He notes how the life, that spark leaves her eyes, how she's no longer on honor roll, how she's absent more. He wonders what has caused this change but is nervous to approach so he doesn't.

Last night she got beat up and passed out and woken up by a bucket of water being poured over her and screamed at to leave. She hurriedly packed luckily she has a car she bought herself,loads her stuff up and leaves she only had time to dry off and change at the bus bathroom then she headed to school. And of course, it was assembled day, and she had to listen to some lecture on shit. It's not even lunch and she's itching for something to take the edge off.

She is having a rough fucking day and needs something to help take the edge off, she sees the school bully Peter smoking in the hall. He’s never given her trouble before, so she heads toward him not caring if she gets a beating she'll take pain as an ethos as well.

Peter sees the girl that he's obsessed with come right up to him he doesn't know what to say but before he can she snatches his cigarette and takes a big inhale he's kinda impressed she doesn't start coughing but he's confused he didn't know she smokes, she's still puffing, “can I keep this one”, “uhh yeah it's your”,” thanks”, she gives him a lil wave and walks off. He's so confused but even more obsessed this is their first real encounter other than her letting him borrow and keep a pen of hers. All day he keeps thinking about how their lips both touched the same cig.

When his mind clears he wonders what sparked her behavior, she usually stays in the shadows and doesn't openly break the rules. So he follows her after school but she gets in her car and drives off, but she usually takes the bus or walks this is new. The next day at the break he sees her leaning against a tree and he goes to her and pulls out a cig, “want another”, she pulls out her earbuds, “huh”, “need another”, “oh fuck yeah”, he lights it up starting it for her and hands it off and they pass it back and forth, “thanks I needed this”, “no problem anytime”, “are you as scary as they say’, “sometimes yeah”, “cool”, bell rings and she heads to class.

That day she takes the bus, her friend lets her park her car at their place temporarily, when she gets off he follows her and watches from a distance as the one girl goes inside and she gets in her car and drives off. He thinks she's living in her car, what how long has this been going on? The next day Peter and Y/N get assigned a project together, Peter thinks this is the perfect opportunity to get closer and maybe ask some questions. He turns to her, “so we should get together and work on this”, “oh um yeah”, “we can go to my place”, “your parents won't mind”, “nah there chill”, “okay then when are you free”, “how about today”, “oh umm yeah sure umm here let me give you my number so you can send me the address”,he gets her number very glad to have it he sends her the address.

He goes right home and cleans up quickly. His parents ask what's up and he says how someone's coming over to do a project, his parents can't believe it but are good with it. She drives over to his place and sees they have a u drive way and plenty of parking space and she parks and goes and knocks. His mom opens the door as Peter comes down the stairs, she greets his parents. Peter takes her up to her room, his mom says she'll be up with snacks soon. They go into his room and she looks around, “you shoved everything in the closet when I was heading over did you?”, “yeah and under the bed”, “nice”. She goes over to some cushions in the corner, “can I”, “yeah”,he is kinda nervous having her in her now. She takes the cushion and sets it against the beds front board and she sits and gets out her laptop,”can I get the wifi password”, “yeah one sec”, he gets her the password and she starts woking. “so i don't usually do homework so how should we do this”,”oh don't worry I'll have this done in 20 minutes”, “what how?”,she pats the floor next to her and he sits and watches but is confused. “what are you doing?”, “first find the paper we need in Russian, second Google translate it, 3rd fix up the Grammar make it sound right and done”, “you know russian”,yeah its about all I have that connects me to my heritage”,he watches as she works, impressed.

A knock at the door and his mom comes in with fresh pigs in a blanket, “here you go”, “this was from the oven ms king you made fresh snacks”, “oh it's no big deal dear”, “thank you”. He sees the way she's eyeing the food,”go ahead eat”,she sets her computer down and dig in and starts eating,the way she eats shows him she's so hungry, “aren't you gonna eat?”,”eat as much as you want, she's making dinner later”. She eats almost all of it,”you full?”, “stuffed”, he eats the last few. She goes back to working,”anything I can do”, “yeah sure read threw this let me know if a part sounds weird”,he takes the laptop and does that and when he finds a weird part she reaches over to his lap and fixes it they get it all done quickly.”so that's done I should get going”, “you can stay and chill I got a good sound system we can listen to something”, “that sounds nice yeah if you don't mind”, “I don't mind”. So they chill and listen to music Peter is glad to see her smile and the life return to her eyes,”where's the bathroom”, “down the hall last left door”,she goes and seeing herself in the mirror she sees she actually smiling again and her eyes she looks alive again it makes her get emotional tear up a bit.

 She comes back and sits down and he sees somethings wrong,”you okay something wrong”, “I umm (wipes eyes) I'm okay”.Her voice cracking gave her away, “Y/N what's wrong you can talk to me”, “no you'll make fun of me like the others”, “others… no I won't, I won't tell a soul”. She's crying now, “I'm so tired”,he opens his arms to hug her. She sees this and takes the opening snuggling up to him and he holds her as she crys. She explains how her adopted parents have been pressuring her her whole life to be perfect and she finally broke and her grades are slipping and how they kicked her Monday and she's been living in her car and she's barely gotten any sleep In days. “Shhh shhh it I'll be okay I'll take care of the bully's at school and you'll stay here my mom will feed you make sure you gain that weight back and you'll be able to sleep soundly here”, “you you know the one good thing about all this has been that I lost weight”, “whyd you want that”, “I've never been skinny but didn't have a problem with being chubby but in the back of my mind I did wanna be skinny cause I've always wanted to be picked up and carried”, “huh that's not a reason to lose weight just a reason to find a strong guy”, “yeah where”,next thing she knows she lifted off the ground and he's holding her bridal style, “right here”, “woah but your so skinny”, “all muscle”,he walks her over to the bed and sets her on the edge,”so what you say you good with my plan”, “your plan?”, “yes you stay here I take care of bullies and my mom will fatten you back up”, she doesn't wanna have to rely on someone but right now she cracked open vulnerable, she nods yes. She hugs onto him pressing her face against his chest, “but your parents”,”dad was a foster kid he won't let you be homeless and mom she's got a big heart and loves to cook... we’ll head downstairs I'll explain to them and you can get whatever you need from your car okay”, “okay”,he wipes her face brushes her hair back and they go.

She goes and gets her bag from her car and he fills in his parents, when she comes back in she looks at them shyly, his dad says “your welcome here Y/N”, his mom says “do you have any food allergies things you hate”, “I prefer garlic powder to the actual thing but that's it”. “Just like peter” . Peter takes her back upstairs,”do you wanna shower or anything”, “yeah that sounds nice”, he takes her to the bathroom and gets her some towels,”feel free to use any of my stuff”, “thanks Peter”,she showers it's nice to finally feel fully clean, she drys off and changes into pj's and her hair wrapped in a towel she heads back to his room. “you got a blow dryer”, “yeah over here”,he gets it out for her. She dries her hair then gets some brushes and stuff from her bag and goes over to the bed,”can I”, “yeah what's mine is yours”,she sits on the bed and starts to braid her hair he watches fascinated he knows how to braid but never been very good at it,your really good at that, “thanks ... can you braid?”, “yeah but not very well”, “I could teach you or do it for you”,that idea is so tempting to have her touch him and do his hair. “Another time you need to rest”,she yawns “yeah”.

 After doing her hair she lays down and the pillow it smells like him she likes it, “thank you for the drawing peter I really like it I didn't know you were so talented”, “you knew it was me”, “yeah smelled like sharpie and cigarettes your the only one who smokes I know”, he lifts up his shirt and turns his back to her showing her his tattoo,”did you design it”, “yeah I design all my tattoos”, “you have more”,”yeah but there below the belt so for another time”, “it's pretty so detailed”. He puts his shirt back on and lays down facing her they just look at eachother he sees she's tired,his mom calls out dinners ready, “are you hungry or wanna sleep”,”I'm still full I wanna sleep”, he gets up and pulls the blanket over her,”you sleep”, he goes and eats. When he comes back she's asleep, seeing her asleep in his bed he likes that sight a lot. He changes and gets ready for bed. He hears her and looks over, looks like she's having a nightmare she wakes up startled,”hey it's okay just a nightmare”,she nods and he gets in and lays down and puts a hand on her shoulder trying to comfort her, “they'd kicked me out before temporarily before I had a car and I had nowhere to go I woke up to a man humping my leg trying to get my pants off... that's what tye nightmare was about”, “I won't let anyone hurt you anymore.”

She reaches out and puts a hand on his chest. He looks down and sees her arm it's covered in scars. That's when he realizes he's never seen her in short sleeves before. “You always wear long sleeves this is why”,she pulls her arm back,”oh shit umm”, “it's okay I don't judge you can I see”,she nods and holds out her arm and he feels the scars, “your not mad”, “oh no never”, “I needed something to take away the pain I couldn't waste the money on drugs so pain is what I used.. that day I took your cigarette I was on my way to cut in yeh bathroom but the cig worked good too”, “I won't stop you from cutting or smoking just let me know if you need bandages okay I'll clean you up”, “thank you Peter”. She starts to cry a bit, he grabs her and pulls her into a hug and holds her rubbing her back,”what's a cute pet name in Russian”,”малютка”,she helps him learn to pronounce it,”close your eyes clear your head rest I've got you малютка”. She does as he says and falls asleep quickly, he stays up a while and just watches her.

The alarm goes off in the morning waking them,”what's that”, “it's the alarm”, “oh what time is it”, “6:30 got half an hour to get ready”, “mmm okay”. He releases her and she stretches and gets up,they get up and get ready she changes and does her makeup doesn't take her to long,he takes longer to get ready and while he's getting his accessories she comes over to take a look, “wow you got lots of gear”,”yep you like it?”, “yeah I've always thought you look cool”,  “thanks wanna try some”,”really?”. He nods and she says yes so he picks out a collar that matches his and puts it on her it's big on her but he likes how it looks you can definitely tell it's his,and he puts a chain belt on her,you'll need this till you gain back your weight and your pants fit right again,she looks in the mirror, “thanks Peter”. They head down and have breakfast and take their lunches and walk to the buss stop,he sees her get nervous,”I'll take care of the bully's dont worry about that ive got”,he notes how she reacts when he says that ,”what does малютка mean”, “umm it means baby lil one”, last night she was raw and open and rn she's feeling more shy with how close she's gotten with him but she won't push him away,”and how would I say my”, “moy”, “it I'll be okay moy малютка... is it okay I say that”, “yeah .. well umm it is it's just something you only say to someone very close and special to your heart” ,”so it's not something said lightly”, “yeah”, “good.”

The bus arrives, “walk in front of me to the back”, she does as he says he notes the whispers and stares so he puts a hand on her waist as they walk and eveyones goes silent deadly silent. They sit he sees she anxious and scratching at her arm, “do they hurt”, “no just when they heal they get itchy”, “do you need something to take the edge off rn”, “I can hold out but a smoke at break would be nice”, “your on”, he puts an arm around her and is holding her to him, to his surprise she presses against him leaning into his hold,they get close to school. “I wanna let everyone know not to mess with you and the best way is for them you see me holding touching be near you, you okay with that?”,she swallows knowing that is the best tactics and she is okay with it she likes the contact but everything from last night and him calling her a pet name it's confusing her feelings a bit,”yeah I'm okay with that”,he can see she's a bit shy nervous but understands it's not from being uncomfortable it's from feelings. So they head onto school him right behind her and a hand on her waist when she stops by her locker. He glares at everyone who looks their way and he's never more than 2 feet away from her. At break they share a smoke he lights it for her and notes a slight blush when he passes it to her. “How you doing darling”, “nervous but that's going away”, “your doing good”. The day goes well no run inside or trouble,bus ride back home she's tired from being stressed all day and she leans her head on him so quietly she didn't even mean to say it outloud but he hears “why's he smell so good”,he doesn't comment playing off that he didn't hear her.

They get back to his house and he cleans up his desk so she has a place to do homework and he lays in bed and watches her, eventually getting up and standing beside her “whatcha doing”, “homework obviously.. but I'm almost done”, “good”. She finishes the work then sits in the pillow corner, puts on her headphones and starts writing on her phone,he's curious and goes to her, “sorry I'm used to being alone and don't want get in your way bother you”, “you won't bother me whatcha doing you”, “i draw I write”, “ooo what kinda stuff”, “umm it's a bit embarrassed but I write fan fics and short stories”, “you don't gotta say more..but umm can I sit with you”, “your like a dog ain't you, cute caring protective always wanna be close and wears a collar”,she reaches up and tugs on his collar a little, he realizes she's the shy type in publicity but relaxes in private, and the collar tug did something to him,”okay never thought about it like that but it's accurate”,she moves forward, “come on moy shchenok sit” ,he sees how she opened up a spot behind her and he moves into it with her between his legs he's surprised when she leans back on him and tilts her head up, “hmmm your warm”, he puts his arms around her, “your cold... why”, “bad circulation get cold easily”, “don't worry I'll keep you warm”, she sits and continues writing on her phone and he's so happy to be her chair and keep her warm. “What does moy shchenok mean”, “my puppy”, his hearts pounding and cheeks flushing he's so happy. He doesn't even notice her movements till she puts down her phone and lays against him fully and grabs onto his hands closing her eyes, “tired?”, “like a really deep tired and….. Peter I wanna cut see the pretty red feel the sting of steel”, :how badly do you want to”,”I can still hold out”, he holds her tighter,”let me know when you can't”,she nods.

It's dinner time and they eat. It's nice ,his parents are nice even ask about her day and tell Peter to watch over her. After dinner they change into pj's and she braids her hair. “Did you read over my shoulder when I was writing earlier”, “no if you wanted me to read it you'll give it to me”,I only share my writing on tumblr I'm so nervous about facing some irl who knows the freaky and weird stuff I'm into”, “what about me ... maybe I'm a freak too”, “gimme some time I'll warm up and share more”, “I'll be waiting”. They get in bed and she puts on a movie on her computer, “where'd you get there your not on Netflix”, “I pirate movies”, “there's so much your hiding under the innocent look”, “oh yeah”. Movie is over they lay down to sleep not cuddling like last time but he feels her hand grab onto his arm and he likes the contact too.

Next day is going okay, their at break sharing a smoke but when she walks back from the water fountain one of her bully's gets in her path and starts getting in her face and starts saying shit saying how she's whoring herself out for protection and other stuff. Peter sees and grabs the guys collar lifts him up and tosses him aside and stomps on the hand he put on her. He goes to her “you okay”, “yeah I'm fine he didn't hurt me”, “come on let's go”,he leads her off the yard and into an empty hall and hugs her he feels her shaking,”shhh shh it's okay whatd he say to you”, “called me a whore saying I'm fucking you for protection saying I'm a sorry accuse for a fuck pathetic ugly thing who should just die”, he wants to go kill the guy but she needs him more she's what's important, “oh moy malyutka don't believe a word he said... your no whore and anyone would be lucky to have you”,”Ty moya spasitel'naya blagodat', Piter Bozhe, ya byla by tvoyey shlyukhoy, yesli by mogla ostat'sya ryadom s toboy”. He doesn't ask what it means he know she needed to say something but wasn't ready for him to know and that's okay. “We can leave, skip the rest of the day if you want”, “I'm not a quitter”, “okay then”, the rest of the day goes okay. She's kinda depressed and nervous but at least he didn't get called in for stomping the guy.

They get home and she does her homework lazily just enough for completion, they jam to some music he put on he thought I'd help and looks like it did. After dinner and pj's, he sees her scratching at her arm scratching to hard, “do you need to cut malyutka”,she looks at him big sad teary eyes and nods yes,he goes and hugs her, “do you have the stuff”, “in my bag”,she gets up and digs around and pulls out a pencil cases she stands there nervously, “i've never done this with someone else in the room”, “I can leave”, “no .. don't leave me”,he goes and picks her up and carries her to the bed setting her down and gets in himself, “I won't leave you ever okay I'm right here whatever you need”, she takes off her jacket and sets it down then opens the case and gets out a blade she looks at him,he gives her his best comforting look. He watches as she cuts and he does find the blood pretty. He sees her go for bandages and stuff, “you're done?”, “yes”, “here let me clean you up I'm pretty skilled at bandaging”, “okay”,he bandages her up, cleans up the stuff and hugs her and kisses the top of her head. “Anything you do after?”, “cry usually”, “well how about a movie and some cuddles and crying if you feel like it”, “that sounds good... I like your cuddles”, “I like yours too your so soft.”

 They put on a movie and cuddle. He's careful of her arm as he holds her to him. “I got a confession.” ,”Yeah”, “you looked really hot today when you threw that guy around and stomped on him”, “you liked that .. I was worried I scared you”, “you don't scare me ... like I said I'm a kinda a freak”, “was it me hurting him or showing off my strength tossing him around that you liked”, “I liked how you hurt him protecting me and your strength seeing how easily you could toss someone around”, “good to know I like learning things about you learning, what you like”. She pushes against him trying to get closer so he pulls her tighter against him, liking the feeling too. They fall asleep like that tightly cuddled together.

DEUCE TRIED TO BEAT ACE WITH A LARGE STICK WHEN THEY MET????????????????

oh my god i get to tell you this i'm so happy. this is going to get long because i just. adore how fucking cringefail deuce is at the start of the novel. the manga is great but it's so important to me how badly this man can fuck up within 10 minutes of meeting a stranger. his ass does NOT know how to keep his foot out of his mouth

going behind a read more bc long and spoiler filled (specifically heavy spoilers (essentially an abridged play-by-play of the first chapter) for Ace's Story book 1 and a little bit of the first chapter of the Episode A manga adaption)

so, in the manga adaption, deuce pretty immediately warms up to ace, yeah?

yeah. deuce is pretty fuckin easy in the manga. meanwhile, in the novel, when ace immediately asks for help...

in fact, deuce manages to fail basically every speech check in the first conversation they have together. i'm not kidding look at how fucking bad he is at this.

my man falls ass first into a rant to a guy he just met and manages to find himself saying 'wow why don't you go cry to your mom and leave me alone to be depressed' to a man who's mom literally died in childbirth. less than 5 minutes after meeting the guy. and the best part? HE KEEPS GOING.

he's gotta stop there, right? surely? surely even a man who's been stranded on an island alone for 3 days can tell when he's got his foot so wedged in his mouth he's practically deepthroating it? NOPE!

at this point, you'd think there's literally nothing worse that he can say. you would be so, so wrong.

MY GUY. i want to hammer in the fact that deuce managed to fuck up a conversation this badly with a man he's literally never met within like, 15 minutes at most. deuce then proceeds to recover from this utter failure at conversation by just. walking away into the woods and proceeding to continue slowly starving to death for several days whilst avoiding ace. he also eats ants on at least one occasion. this isn't really relevant to the hitting ace with a stick thing but it's important to me that you know that. he also despite all of this has this gayass moment

again, not relevant, but important to me that you know he saw ace failing to sail on the worst raft you've ever seen and still called him 'dashing'. now, at this point, deuce has been without food and with only minimal water for days- probably close to a week, though it's a bit ambiguous. and my guy, brilliantly, thinks to himself 'well. ace doesn't look like he's starving to death. what if he has food?' and sneaks behind ace, following him until he sees ace with a huge fruit (the mera mera no mi).

all of this... deuce sneaking up on ace planning to fight him for the fruit, kill him if he needs to, because he's the son of roger... and you know what ace fucking does??? you wanna know what this giant depressed puppy of a man fucking says to a guy who was abt to bash his brains out??

"nice stick!" and deuce just fucking. starts sobbing on the spot out of guilt while they argue both trying to get the other to eat the fruit. they are. so stupid and i love them so much.

so yeah. deuce's first ever interaction with ace is loudly announcing that he'd want to kill himself if he was the son of roger, and his SECOND interaction is him attempting to kill ace with a stick because he's hangry. i love him so much he's so fucking shit.

tldr you're not you when you're hungry and also you should all read the ace novels. because of this and also because ace and deuce get cockblocked on a gay ferris wheel ride by a marine just deciding to jump in the gondola with them and sit there menacingly until ace breaks the door and just jumps out to escape her monologuing abt her traumatic backstory

Let’s talk Helena Wayne bc like it’s criminal that we barely get anything about her and that they completely changed her origin and family (the bertinelli mafia family) to add her into the main comic book line.

But I wanted Dick to share some older siblings trauma with her and for Damian to have that “blood” sibling bc I think that would have completely rocked early Damian’s shit. All his life, he was told to be the true heir of Bruce Wayne, but it turns out he has an OLDER SISTER BRUCE HID FROM TALIA AND RA. Idk I just think that would have crushed his lil murder ego and made for some interesting sibling moments and an interesting dynamic.

Lastly, can we talk about how the Batfam fandom completely stole all of Helena (Bertinelli)’s character traits and gave them to Jason??? Im sorry but when in the material source has Jason ever been super devout and catholic? Helena is the religious one, why am I reading about Jason’s apparent Catholicism in fics and HC dumps? Also Jason (besides his Robin days) has never been this savour and protector of the woman and children of Gotham, that’s very very veryyyyyy clearly a trait from Helena and strongly ties into her backstory as a child who suffered coming from a rich bloodline of syndicate crime. And don’t think this is me bashing on Jason, bc it’s not!! I love Jason Todd - but for who he is. Not for this weird fandom version of him who is either still suffering from the craze the lazarus pit puts you through, or this Joan of Arc of Gotham character either.

I'm gonna be honest with you, this character confuses me a bit. I know that Bruce and Selina got married and had a daughter in their Earth-Two incarnations, and this daughter is Helena Wayne, who's Dick best buddy and a vigilante in her own right called Huntress.

Then I know Helena Bertinelli, daughter of a mafia lord who was introduced in the late 80s in the preboot comic continuity, and was a quite murdery vigilante called Huntress who Bruce didn't accept because she "reminded him of Barbara" (you gotta love DC's excuses for sexism and ableism lol it's not like Barbara was dead just paralyzed. Also it did not look like Bruce gave a shit about it at the end of TKJ that Joker had crippled her - "she reminds him or Barbara". LMAO Bruce).

Then post reboot the title Huntress was given back to Helena Wayne, however Helena Bertinelli is ALSO there and she's ALSO called Huntress? She appears in the Grayson run where Dick is an agent of Spyral, and she seems to be Italian-American but I don't think her origin is the same as in preboot? Also I have no idea about Helena Wayne's continuity post reboot - when she was conceived, who raised her, how did she become a vigilante, neither I have any idea where to find this info.

I agree that if she had been raised by Bruce it could have made for an interesting dynamic amongst the bats and birds. It did in Earth 2 even if only Dick is just there - they're not siblings but they also aren't not siblings? The dynamic is murky and I love murky. Pretty sure it would have changed everything for Damian as well, especially the fact that she would have most likely been the first object of Damian's need to prove himself worthy, instead of Tim.

That being said, not much of what you mentioned is fanon about Jason.

Jason had an arc in which he's a priest. Pretty normal that fans HC him as devout or anyway catholic.

Father Todd in Flashpoint: The World of Flashpoint Vol. 1 - this is an AU in which Jason was never taken in by Bruce and was never Robin.

As for the whole "protector of women and children" thing, you probably know that Jason was born in extreme poverty, his father was in and out of prison and his mother died of overdose. He is very much a child who suffered because of a broken system, and given how harshly he reacts when women and children are the recipient of violence "in his Robin days", is it really that strange that fans assume he carried these traits in adulthood?

We see him being sweet and protective to kids many times, or anyway losing his mcfucking shit when children are being harmed (like in Brothers in Blood). Imo that of Jason caring about vulnerable people is barely a headcanon, and I don't see how this would make him the Joan of Arc of Gotham either - if I'm being honest ALL vigilantes should care about minorities and vulnerable people, it's the other way around that is weird as fuck (like that arc in which Dick almost dies to prevent this guy from shutting down Bludhaven's casinos, like what the hell was Tim Seeley thinking exactly).

That being said, I understand your frustration if the character you like doesn't have recognition. Trust me I do! There's a lot of them for me too, especially female and/or non white characters who had maybe 1 run ages ago and then got forgotten by DC, and I would REALLY LIKE to see them more, and to see them acknowledged more by the fans (from the top of my mind, Jenni Ognats or Patricia Trayce).

But this isn't fandom's fault. As I mentioned before, Helena Bertinelli as a fleshed out character was a thing between 20 and 30 years ago, and most of tumblr's userbase was either very young or not born yet. DC forgot about her, stripped Huntress from her to give it to Helena Wayne, then brought her back but as an agent of Spyral and it really doesn't look like they care. Fans can't be held accountable for the fact that she's simply not there. They didn't "steal" Helena's traits to give them to Jason; this implies a willful and malicious intent from people who saw this character and decided her features fit another character better, and it's obviously not what happened - people barely know Helena Bertinelli exists if at all.

Also - I said this about Jason already and I will repeat it a million times: Jason wasn't picked at random from the sea of DC characters to be people's blorbo, he resonates with fans for a reason. Under the Red Hood is a deeply emotional and relatable arc for many people because it's the story of how a child was failed by every single person who was supposed to protect and guide him, and then was failed again as an adult victim who demanded to be seen and heard and acknowledged, and instead was silenced again. It's heartbreaking to see how many people see this and say "this is me, this is what happened to me", but it is what it is, and most of all there is no taking this away from Jason's fans. DC tried to villainize him, to make him look and sound like a madman, to make him unhinged and deranged and they had Tim suggest that "maybe it's the Lazarus Pit that drove him mad", but it didn't work and fans still love him and still consider him a symbol of how "bad victims" are treated worse than their abusers, and keep being retraumatized by a society that prefers turning a blind eye to violence than deal with the issue at its root.

And lastly, bitching won't get you anywhere. I am the living proof that the right way to make people interested in something is to be passionate about that something. You want more folks to pay attention to Helena Bertinelli, then since DC won't do anything with her, the most effective thing you can do is post about her - write essays, draw her, write fics with her, create webweavings and moodboards, commission this stuff if you don't have the skills. Complaining that she should be the recipient of fandom love won't make anyone more interested in her.

okay full transparency, when I started writing for roommate!Eddie I absolutely used the fic logic of “everything is perfect here” because I wanted to focus more on the relational/emotional aspect of two people who have already learned how to share a space. at the time, I think the first meeting/time it took to iron out issues were less interesting to me from a writing standpoint. however, I certainly had the framework for their backstories in the back of my head while i wrote!

I’ll share my thoughts below for those who are interested in the roommate!Eddie+roommate!Reader story. but also don’t hold me to anything I say here for future stories bc my personal canon is subject to change. lol.

in this no-magic Big City AU of mine, I imagined reader and Robin meeting in college and becoming good friends. you were in a horrifically boring history class together (Robin for her smarty-pants Psych/Art double degree and you for a Literature degree) and started hanging out outside of school. by proxy, you also hang out with Steve, Robin’s roommate, and by the time the three of you graduate you’re all good friends.

and then you’re staring down the barrel of a mostly useless degree, a shit ton of college debt, and nowhere to go. you land a job at a local publishing company, but it’s mostly boring and corporate and doesn’t pay for a two-room apartment in the heart of the city. which is unfortunate, because your last roommate (a nightmare by all accounts. quite literally never learned how to clean up after herself) moved out a month ago and you need the extra income to keep the space.

enter Steve’s mysterious friend Eddie. whom you’ve only heard wild stories about. apparently, he’s looking for a room- and according to Robin, he’s “well-mannered for a boy”. you ask a million questions before agreeing to meet with him (neither Steve or Robin gave you a straight answer as to the guy’s career which is weird…), and you make it really clear you’re not in the mood to be screwed over. or stuck with an unlivable situation. 

but your friends assure you it’ll be a good fit. and when you meet for drinks later that week, Eddie is extremely charming and honest. tells you he is, in fact, in the drugs business, but promises it never follows him home. he agrees to all your house rules. he also flirts a lot. but you learn to take that with a grain of salt.

so Eddie moves in and yeah, absolutely there’s an adjustment period. learning the rhythms of each other’s days and nights, figuring out how to split household duties, all the mundane shit that comes w/ a new roommate. there’s an awful first winter where the heat goes out; you two alternate getting colds and stomach flus, multiple nights spent sweating over the toilet or kitchen sink (one bathroom is a KILLER for the sick season). 

there’s a camaraderie that forms after those sucky cold months. you absorb into each other’s lives, friend groups, spaces that extend outside of your apartment. you become real, actual friends who enjoy each other’s company.

and also? Eddie is happy to appease. he’s not a pushover, but he is really respectful of you and your space. he puts effort into learning your little quirks, or things that tick you off (there are a lot). you both figure out early on that open communication is the best policy. Eddie’s the type to tell you if there’s something he doesn’t like or wants to change, so neither of you end up holding secret quiet grudges.  

which is why I think reader finds this whole attraction thing so scary (and uses rules as a defense mechanism sorry I wrote my own OCD into this!! lmao) like Oh, fuck. if this goes sideways, if we have a big fight or fall in and out of love and can’t be in the same room anymore… we’d have to move. I’d have to say goodbye to the best roommate I’ve ever had. our shared friend groups would be dispersed. it would be devastating on so many levels.
