Do people not know how to write endings anymore?

I swear, every show I’ve seen in the past few years either gets cancelled or has a horrible ending.

Supernatural: Shit ending

Julie and the phantoms: Cancelled

Warrior nun: Cancelled

Locke & key: Shit ending

Our flag mean death: Cancelled

Big sky: Cancelled

Gotham knights: Cancelled

Lookwood & co: Cancelled

Shall I go on? Because I could. For like an hour.

Endings are never easy, but I swear they weren't always this bad. First, they make us pay for a billion different streaming services, then they take away our 22-24 episode seasons and stick us with 8 episode seasons, shows only last for 4 season maximum, it takes years to shoot each season, and they can't even give us a decent fucking ending for the shows that actually manage to be good despite all that bullshit. I hate it here.

As a 100% devoted evangelist of The Batman (2022) I was duty bound to give The Penguin a watch. Despite my low expectations for spin-offs generally even with the plus of Matt Reeves’ continued involvement in the series I’m happy to say that I enjoyed Episode One a lot. Felt genuinely like DC’s version of the Netflix Daredevil series only with a minuscule booster shot of added levity. No significant spoilers btw:

My absolute favorite moment of the show and how I knew that showrunner Lauren LeFranc & her fellow creatives truly were onto something is the encounter Oz has with Falcone Jr. in the pre-title scene. Beyond just being an excellent hook for the show, IMO it was also a fantastic display of what makes The Penguin specifically a villain who firmly belongs in Batman’s rogues gallery outside of simply his penguin/avian gimmick as well as cutting to the heart of why he isn’t to be categorized as just one more generic mobster in the gnarled web of Gotham’s crime families; something which Batman Caped Crusader & Batman Audio Adventures tapped into recently as well. The scene along with the glimpse of his home life & familial relationships we get later in the episode shows how when you get right down to it, The Penguin is at his best when he is portrayed as having more in common with the villains at Arkham Asylum than with the garden variety members of the criminal underworld. Just like with how Daredevil highlights why Fisk is a different kind of gangster, The Penguin’s first episode shows how standard gangsters who underestimate him & pigeonhole him as just another mob earner with no teeth only makes them vulnerable to the “real Oswald”. That’s also why the character who they set up as his season long foil/obstacle works in giving The Penguin an opponent worth fearing who isn’t The Batman.

I also shouldn’t fail to mention that Colin Farrell once again truly cooks & absolutely disappears into his role & is once again surrounded by a suite of terrific actors matching his earnestness & talent beat for beat.

Overall, I definitely recommend at least this first episode to any Batman fan especially if you loved The Batman (2022) & Matt Reeves’ vision for the character, world and franchise.

My only worry is that similar to Netflix’s Daredevil, the amount of episodes coupled with the length of each might bloat the series a bit and harm the pacing. Though with the DCEU’s different priorities in the Gunn Era compared to the MCU it might not end up as an issue & the show might end up being better paced & worth the episode count. Relatedly, my only gripe is just general annoyance at our collective return to weekly episode releases for shows instead of binging but I’m not an expert in TV marketing & production so maybe weekly releases are truly a better boost for audience numbers, retention & growth than bingeable releases have been.

Chapter Six: Aftermath- Part One

he reached into his pocket taking out a knife. Twirling it in his hand for a second he then forcefully shoved it into the woman’s abdomen wiggling it a little just for fun before he then pulled it out the blood from her wound now staining her white button up as she groaned in pain saying “Y/N…you really..think..he can…protect you?” “It’s Minx!” Jerome shouted before swiftly kicking her chair off the desk and onto the floor. The wood hitting the ground with a great crash as he tossed her away to die slowly. Turning to me he smiled widely jokingly asking “Is it bad?” making me scoff saying “Nothing we can’t handle.” “Why don’t you do a little decorating while I deal with business.” he said, dropping off the desk. Grabbing a duffle bag near us he reached into it then he threw me some cans of spray paint. I nodded with a smile, taking the paint and going to the different walls. I covered the gcpd with little doodles words and whatever came to mind. Stars, hearts, smiling faces, ect. covered everything along with words like haha, liars and pigs. As I was graffitiing the palace I saw jerome pick up the camera that greenwood dropped on the floor and he started ranting to it. Sending his silly lessons and messages to its viewers as the others shot the people left still alive cleaning house. Guess they didn’t want survivors. Everyone stopped though when we heard distant sirens. “Time to go!” Jerome yelled out to everyone as he put down the camera and rushed over to me grabbing my hand and we both ran out the building and down the street into the same suv from before that came back to pick us up. Out of breath and my heart pounding in my chest I gave out a loud laugh. “Glad you had fun, doll.” Jerome said catching his breath still covered in blood and in his fake uniform “I liked your handy work back there. You’re a true artist.” he joked, making me smile. I knew that I should have probably been sad or traumatized but I didn’t. Maybe it was just the adrenaline but I felt alive. I felt electricity flowing through my veins and it was all thanks to Jerome. “Thank you.” I said putting my legs over his lap. “I’ll take care of your nose when we get back” I finished “Wow. An artist and a nurse. I must have hit the jackpot.” J retorted back laughing while I hit his shoulder. Afterwards both of us relaxed for the rest of the ride just being happy and comfortable sitting with each other.

Job: Police Officer

Oh you little tattletale.

He’s not too surprised by your efforts in trying to keep him from getting caught.

Hell practically half if not most of his followers are or used to be coppers before joining him.

You’re no exception.

Expect to get anonymous calls from him talking and asking about anything other than any more information on Gordon being on his tail or big plans the precinct has been working toward.

For example, one day he called you while on shift to just say, “When are ya gettin’ off cop doody?”.

He has a printed and digital copy of your work schedule.

As we see in Season 4,he has complete control over Arkhams guards and prisoners, even saying that he wants to make a show of his escape, further displaying the extent of his 'showman complex'.

 For the sake of the prompt, if he had any minor inconveniences with his little escape he wouldn’t turn down you assisting him in his plans.

Though do keep in mind his showman complex and that unless you want to be discovered as a traitor, you’ll need to discuss with him a plan where you won’t be seen as an accomplice.

He’ll leave little gifts for you on your desk mostly to show his appreciation for all that you’ve done for him.

How he gets them there, you’re not too sure.

If you don't care for his gifts, he'll offer other ways to show his appreciation. (I'm winking under the eyepatch)

Gotham!Jervis Tetch

Job: Doctor

“Twinkle, twinkle, pretty doctor, how I long to unlock her. In this asylum, you shine with smite, but in my heart, you are my light.” (Yes, this is similar to him and Lee’s interaction.)

When he got sent to Arkham, there wasn’t much he was looking forward to.

Except getting back out on Gotham streets and getting revenge on James Gordon.

But when he meets you? Now there’s something to look forward to.

Once he realizes you’re on his side and help him escape the first time, expect to hear from him often.

Quite often in fact.

When he gets sent to Arkham a second time, doctor visits and check ups are a lot more fun now.

It’s like two kids in kindergarten, passing secret notes to one another while the teacher isn’t looking.

Some being about a plan for his escape while others are all laughs and giggles.

He is a gentleman when it comes to showing his gratitude for your assistance.

That is if he likes you of course.

Gotham!Jonathan Crane

Job: Forensic science technician

When you first met, Jonathan didn’t trust you.

In fact he hated you.

Anyone associated with the GCPD and Jim Gordon, he hated.

He blamed you all for the death of his father.

It took a bit of time and patience for him to fully trust you.

Even when you started becoming a full time mole for him, he still kept you at an arms length.

No matter how often you’d update him on the GCPD and their plans, or Jim Gordon’s whereabouts, he’d just give a vague form of acknowledgment or confirmation in your words.

The only reason he started to put his whole trust in you was when you started showing interest in his experiments.

Especially his toxin.

He starts enjoying your company more when you start helping him perfect his toxin.

You both find out it comes in handy that you’re able to get information on your former colleagues' fears without any suspicion.

He’s able to find weak points in practically every police officer in the precinct.

He starts showing his gratitude for your help later on.

Though he does tend to act vague about it.
