meiji tokyo renka (or “meikoi”) is a japanese otome game about a normal, food-loving girl named mei who travels back in time to the meiji era and loses all of her memories. she sneaks into a party where she meets many famous historical figures! but when she’s about to be arrested, who will save her? and will it lead to something more—?!

it received an anime in 2019, if this looks familiar to you! i’m translating the game that it was based off of!!

Meiji Tokyo Renka: Full Moon first launched for PS Vita on August 25, 2016 in Japan. It is a ported version of Meiji Tokyo Renka, which originally launched for PlayStation Portable, featuring a new route for one of the characters, as well as other new content.

Here is the story synopsis, via VNDB:

The protagonist, a quite normal high school girl named Ayazuki Mei, meets the self proclaimed illusionist Charlie on a night with a red full moon. Due to his hand she travels through time to the Meiji era of Japan. There, where Mononoke had been observed, was a sort of mysterious Meiji Era “Tokyo”. Following Charlie’s lead, she arrives at the Rokumeikan building. Waiting at the party the protagonist sneaks into are an assemblege of historic personages. Ogai Mori, Shunsou Hishida, Otojirou Kawakami, Kyoka Izumi, Fujita Goro, and Yakumo Koizumi. During the protagonists interaction with those men, the prized Meiji Era ability to see Mononoke “Tamayori” is awakened within her. Because she holds this power, her relationship with those men evolves… In an unfamiliar era, an awakening of love blooms by living among these handsome men and interacting with them. Will the protagonist return to her original time? Or…? A love that crosses space-time… What could the conclusion be?

The cane in his 1st ascension (along with the modernizing Japan background) rocks, because it looks like it's based off of an anecdote from his old age, about him walking with his grandson when the kid mouths off at some yakuza walking by, who naturally get mad at that. The kid hides behind his grandpa here, who then tosses away his cane and straightens up, which was apparently enough to frighten off the yakuza guys. Looking at this guys face and stance, I can believe that.

Being one of the few surviving members of the Shinsengumi, he, along with Hajime (who at that point changed his name to Fujita Goro), would set up the Grave of the Shinsengumi as a memorial to their fallen comrades, and Shinpachi would later go on to write memoirs about his time in the corps.

Delusional Monthly Magazine Episode 7 Review - Matchmaking Trap

This is a rather low stakes episode with White Pegasus trying to steal Taro’s MOPart by trapping him and Goro into a matchmaking party held on a cruise ship. It is going along with Taro’s usual schtick of wanting to find a wife, but there’s a bit of a twist.

First off, the weird Motarian ruin underneath the cafe’s basement shows that there are six MOParts. The group has two while White Pegasus also have two. That means there are two more. There’s also the instance where Jiro has memories of a far off kingdom, which he reveals to be the Mo continent. Why he has these memories are unknown, but when Motarian Jiro touched regular Taro, Taro started seeing these memories too. What could this be? By the way, the cafe owner has no idea and doesn’t know anything about the basement. Odd. Maybe he’s a villain? I have my suspicions on Catherine and Rock as villains.

Although Taro and Goro were invited because of the Nussie article, they have very contrasting views on marriage. Taro is desperate for a wife while Goro has no interest in marriage. I think it sort of makes sense given their ages; Taro is 28 and Goro is 18. It makes sense they have different views about marriage. Like, Taro is so committed and desperate to find a wife that he starts lying about his occupation once he noticed the girls weren’t interested in his job as a magazine editor. I think why girls were turned off from him was the fact that he wants to quit after marriage, meaning that he isn’t really serious about hard work and such. Goro is able to charm women easily as he is honest and straightforward with his answer; notice how that when Goro says that he’s a magazine editors, girls aren’t turned off while they’re turned off by Taro. It’s mainly demeanor. Goro is a hard worker while Taro isn’t. Though, it was nice to see Taro finally realizing that he might have some attachment towards the publishing company and wants to stick around longer. I hope that he learns that women want hard workers.

It was nice to see White Pegasus getting the short end of the stick this time around. When they thought they had an elaborate plan of luring the editors into the matchmaking party, Edward’s attempts on pickpocketing fails. When they use a pretty lady, Anri, as a Plan B, even she fails to take his MOPart. I think this is the first instance where Noin and Perch do not take initiative as they are in the security room, with Edward trying to be the one who steals MOParts but fails miserably. They were almost close, but Jiro swooped in last minute and saved the day.

Speaking of guest voice actors, Johnny returns, meaning Jun Fukuyama makes a second appearance in this show. Anri, the lady trying to charm Taro, is voiced by Saki Fujita! Yes, the voice provider for THE Hatsune Miku is the guest for this week’s episode. I’m always amazed with the casting for this anime despite how over-scientific this anime can be at times.

I wonder what will happen next week. The preview hints that Saburo might be transforming? I’d like to see that! What are your thoughts on this episode.
