âWASHINGTON â President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that sky-high new taxes on imported goods would be âreciprocal,â meaning they were payback for tariffs other countries have slapped on U.S. exports.
But the reciprocal tariffs turned out not to be based on actual levies imposed by other countries. Instead, theyâre based on a formula made up by the White House â and widely mocked by experts.
Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a conservative economist American Action Forum and former director of the Congressional Budget Office, called it âmalpracticeâ in response to another conservative economist who called it âembarrassing.â
The formula, which resulted in wildly different tariffs for various foreign countries, including several uninhabited islands, first came to wide attention thanks partly to analysis by an anonymous social media user who reckoned the percentage rate of the tariffs matched other countriesâ trade surpluses with the U.S. divided by their exports. The journalist James Surowiecki also noticed the correlation.
âThey didnât actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did,â Surowiecki wrote. âInstead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the countryâs exports to us.â
In other words, the supposedly reciprocal tariffs, which are supposed to combat arbitrary foreign barriers to U.S. goods, are themselves based on an arbitrary formula.
In a response on X, the website formerly known as Twitter, White House spokesman Kush Desai called the analyses âincorrectâ and pointed to a fuller explanation of the formula from the U.S. Trade Representative, which claimed that other countriesâ ânon-tariff policiesâ cause them to sell more goods to the U.S. than we sell back to them.
âIf trade deficits are persistent because of tariff and non-tariff policies and fundamentals, then the tariff rate consistent with offsetting these policies and fundamentals is reciprocal and fair,â the USTR said on its website, which included a seemingly more complicated math equation and several academic citations.
Alan Cole, an economist with the Tax Foundation, said he suspected Desai didnât really understand the equation.
âSo they thought, âOur thing is more complicated and smarter-looking than that. It has more fancy Greek letters. It canât possibly just be a very, very simple division,ââ Cole told HuffPost. âAfter you cancel it out, itâs the same formula.â
Still, Trump has long claimed that trade deficits are inherently bad, and the formula could be said to reflect his zero-sum view of global trade, in which U.S. consumers are getting ripped off if they spend more on products from abroad than people in foreign countries spend on goods made in the U.S.
âOur country has been looted, pillaged, raped and plundered by nations near and far, both friend and foe alike,â Trump said Wednesday.
Trump has talked about using tariffs as leverage against Canada, Mexico and China to stop the flow of fentanyl into the U.S., and heâs said the U.S. would be better off if Americans made more of their own products. Heâs also said tariffs should be a more significant source of revenue for the U.S. government.
Cole noted that the U.S. purchases a lot of consumer goods that are made more cheaply in other countries and that the outgoing dollars are often reinvested in American companies and government debt, rather than simply hoarded by foreigners. He questioned the wisdom of trying to upend the global order by making it more expensive for Americans to buy clothing and electronics made in Indonesia, for example.
âThe U.S. is this hub for all sorts of investment, and people love our financial assets, and they have to give us goods in exchange, and thatâs kind of how the worldâs been working for a long time, and thatâs why weâve run a trade deficit,â he said. âWhy should Americans be sewing shirts together, for example? A huge fraction of these tariffs are based on bilateral trade imbalances with Southeast Asia, where theyâre good at making textiles.â
Since the tariffs are paid by U.S. importers who can raise prices to recoup all or part of the cost of the tariffs, Trumpâs âliberation dayâ announcement this week could be tantamount to the largest tax increase on U.S. consumers in decades. At the same time, economists have said the tariffs could increase price inflation and slow economic growth, potentially even throwing it in reverse and triggering a recession.
âThis has to be one of the biggest unforced economic policy errors in US history,â wrote David Beckworth, an economist with the Mercatus Center, a right-leaning think tank.
The Nobel-Prize-winning liberal economist Paul Krugman called the crudity of the âreciprocalâ tariffs formula shocking.
Big money interests are running the government â and influencing the news you read. While other outlets are retreating behind paywalls and bending the knee to political pressure, HuffPost is proud to be unbought and unfiltered. Will you help us keep it that way? You can even access our stories ad-free.
âWhen the fate of the world economy is on the line, the malignant stupidity of the policy process is arguably as important as the policies themselves,â Krugman wrote. âHow can anyone, whether theyâre businesspeople or foreign governments, trust anything coming out of an administration that behaves like this?â
Another explanation for the tariffs is that Trump is simply using a power that Congress has delegated to the White House and nobody can stop him.
âTariffs are a tool the president enjoys because itâs personal power,â Rep. Ryan Zinke (R-Mont.), who served as interior secretary during the first Trump administration, told HuffPost this week. âItâs personal â he doesnât have to go through Congress. He can exercise personal power.â

Welcome to Something Eternal: A Website Forum in 2023 wtf lmao
It's 2023, and a single belligerent rich guy destroyed one of the primary focal points of uh...global communication. Tumblr is, shockingly, kinda thriving despite the abuse it gets from its owners, but that I will call the iconic refusal of Tumblr users to let Tumblr get in the way of their using Tumblr. Reddit killed its API, removing the functionality of mobile apps that made it remotely readable (rip rif.) Discord, our current primary hangout, has made countless strange choices lately that indicate it has reached the summit of its usability and functionality, and can only decline from here as changes get made to prepare for shareholders. (NOTE: WROTE THIS POST BEFORE THEIR MOBILE "REDESIGN" LMAO)
The enshittification is intense, and it's coming from every direction. Social media platforms that felt like permanent institutions are instead slowly going to let fall fallow incredible amounts of history, works of art, thought, and fandoms. It kinda sucks!
A couple years ago, I posted about a new plan with a new domain, to focus on the archiving of media content, as I saw that to be the fatal weakness of the current ways the internet and fandoms work. Much has happened since to convince me to alter the direction of those efforts, though not abandon them entirely.
Long story short? We are launching a fucking website forum. In 2023.
If you remember In the Rose Garden, much about Something Eternal will be familiar. But this has been a year in the making, and in many ways it's far more ambitious than IRG was. We have put money on this. The forum is running on the same software major IT and technology businesses use, because I don't want the software to age out of usability within five years. It has an attached gallery system for me to post content to, including the Chiho Saito art collection. It has a profile post system that everyone already on the forum has decided is kinda like mini Twitter? But it is, fundamentally, a website forum, owned and run and moderated by us. We are not web devs. But we have run a website on pure spite and headbutting code for over twenty years, and we have over a decade of experience maintaining social spaces online, both on the OG forum, and on our Discord. Better skilled people with far more time than we have can and will build incredible alternatives to what is collapsing around us. But they're not in the room right now. We are. And you know what? Maybe it's time to return to a clunkier, slower moving, more conversation focused platform.
You're not joining a social media platform with the full polish of dozens of devs and automated moderation. Things might break, and I might need time to fix them. The emojis and such are still a work in progress. Because e-mails no longer route in reasonable normal ways, the sign-up process instead happens within the software, and has to be approved by mods. Design and structure elements may change. Etc. The point being, that the forum isn't finished, but it is at a place where I feel like I can present it to people, and it's people I need to help direct what functions and things will be in this space. You all will shape its norms, its traditions, its options...choices I could try to make now, but really...they're for us to create as a group! But the important stuff? That's there. Now let's drive this baby off the damn lot already!
Come! Join us!!
PS. As always, TERFs and Nazis need not apply.
#revolutionary girl utena#shoujo kakumei utena#rgu#sku#empty movement#utena meta#fandom stuff#fandoms#expect a somewhat spicy atmosphere#empty movement has always had deep something awful roots#and i expect the migration back to a forum will bring with it some of that more spicy attitude#also lol henry kissinger is dead god that rules

It's done! The outline forâ
âis below the cut. The goal of this project is to explore the following phenomena with as much context and nuance as I can manage, tracing our history over the past 15 years:
What about us, and what about Dan and Phil, drew in and continues to draw in a very specific audience. If they are a ranch metaphor, we are a pizza metaphor đĽđđŤśđť
Why we were Like Thatâ˘, by which I mean so parasocially invested in them that we became, at times, the most annoying people on the internet. Much of that reputation is undeserved, and the videos on the phandom to date have been strongly negative. So, uh, I guess I'm going to put my face on camera and (mostly) defend us.
Reblog, share in your Discord servers, reply, or send me messages/anon asks with feedback or resources if you have any! Especially if your experience being in this fandom community has been dramatically different from mine. There are TIT spoilers near the end of the outline, but I'm not tagging because certain individuals seem to be lurking over there. Thank you!
Chapters:
Full outline:
introduction
cold open
felt personally attacked by jonathan haidt's last press tour
showed up to the phrenaissance 11 months late
had an unexpectedly strong response to their new content, needed to find out why
what the hell are we doing here?
- phenomenology (academics are professionally insufferable) - research question 1: what drew the audience in? - research question 2: why were we Like That
what we're NOT doing here
- a strict content analysis or "wow we sucked" video - providing sources for things best left uncirculated, thank you
reflexivity (personal biases)
- american zillennial in public health - in the youtube audience by spring 2010 - lurking in the phandom on tumblr 2013-2015, back* since 2019 - fan behavior i did and did not engage in
(----): truly necessary background information, i swear
(pop) cultural trends, tech, and their intersection
- nerd/geek identity and the first online weirdos - broadcast tv & the music industry vs the internet - defining "emo" - blogging & vlogging - early internet comedy
broader social/economic trends
- so the U.S. economy collapsed in 2007 - a decade that sucked except for rom-coms and square enix games - the flip/slide phone + digital camera + mp3 player loadout
(05-8): early youtube and early phil
youtube: a great video uploader without a clear purpose
the content on the website
- crossposts, corporations, and creative/social outlets - omg guys it's amazing phil - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: justin bieber
the audience of "early adopters"
contemporary social media sites and forums
(2009): origin story
a wild dan appears⌠in the comments
the global constant that is teenagers being messy online
daring my old school district to sue me
- "one town's war on gay teens" (literal rolling stone headline!) - epidemiology 101: rates of⌠ugh⌠"unaliving" oneself - ways kids cope when it seems no adults will help them
the earliest days of dan & phil
- hello internet + pinof - a chronically overexamined timeline - file deleted ---* so how big WAS the audience at the time? ---* acceptable funny/edgy language was just different
contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: lucas cruikshank
omg it's meeeeeee
- how amy & friends were using youtube - ways i was just destined to end up here - being in social environments with peers 3-6 years older
(2010): is it "twenty-ten" or "two thousand ten?"
youtube is a platform about to explode in popularity
- the algorithm before it was The Algorithmâ˘, lost site features - let's take a trip through the wayback machine :3c - actual dan & phil content in 2010 - the green brothers found vidcon - contemporary youtube-to-legacy success: darren criss
social media: also about to explode in popularity
- facebook was cool at the time, believe it or not - law of equivalent exchange: 2010 amy cringe compilation - the birth of instagram and pinterest - youtube slash livejournal (the first phanfics⌠sort of) - shockfic and its place in the overton window
the beginning of "the great rewiring" as haidt calls it
- ways social media is about to dramatically change - third spaces become online spaces - confounding variable: changing expectations of teens
(2011): the end of an era, the start of an age
a very long tangent on fandom and pop culture
cultural exchange
counterculture and teenagers as concepts
the first british invasion: the 1960s
- beatlemania and its descendents - moral panic about the virtue of tween/teen girls - tv/film/fashion trends being imported from the uk - in parallel, star trek births the modern fandom
the second british invasion: the 1980s
- synth/new pop that came out of the punk movement (hi, emo?) - confined mainly to music and fashion - cool britannia
it's harry freakin' potter

Hey guys, this is kind of sudden but my time in genshinresource will end starting today. I've given a lot of thoughts about this but I can't find joy in Genshin anymore, to the point that I feel uncomfortable just by looking at any Genshin-related stuff, therefore I thought it would be best to stop now. Should anyone wants to make another Genshin resource blog or wants to look for other official art, you can find the source links for everything under this post's break line.
This blog will still be open for public view but it won't be updated any further, same goes for the AIO links and the Ask box will be disabled permanently. I will now fully focus on my Star Rail resource blog instead and will keep running it for as long as I can.
Thank you everyone for the past 2 years. I really appreciate all your thoughts and encouraging messages as well as all the new stuff I could learn from you guys. I apologize for not being able to contribute to the Genshin community anymore.
So long, everyone.

đ´ Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine:
On International Womenâs Day: A Salute to the Steadfast Palestinian Woman Standing Against Genocide and Displacement Plans
The Palestinian Woman: A Song of Freedom, Homeland, and Anemones
Our Brave PeopleâŚ
On March 8, the peoples of the world celebrate International Womenâs Day in recognition of womenâs central role in the journey of liberation and progress, and in appreciation of their long struggles against oppression, injustice, and exploitation. In Palestine, however, this day carries a deeper and more painful dimension, as the Palestinian woman stands at the heart of the confrontation, carrying the banner of steadfastness and resistance against the zionist machine of killing and destruction. She remains on the frontlinesâas a fighter, prisoner, martyr, wounded, and as a mother of martyrsâbearing the wounds of the homeland in her heart and igniting the flame of resistance, struggle, and defiance.
Our Proud and Defiant PeopleâŚ
Amid the ongoing zionist genocide against our people in Gaza and the West Bank, the heroism of Palestinian women is evident as they face extermination, killing, displacement, repeated forced migration, and massacres. They fight to survive, to protect their homeland and children, and to uphold their right to live in freedom and dignity.
On this important occasion, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine reaffirms the following:
1. A salute of reverence and admiration to the Palestinian woman who continues to resist on the frontlinesâwhether in the besieged and bleeding Gaza, making immense sacrifices, in the rebellious West Bank, or in exile and diaspora, standing firm against zionist plans to uproot and displace our people.
2. The necessity of escalating the struggle in all international forums to hold the occupation accountable for its crimes against Palestinian women and to prosecute its leaders in international courts as war criminals who have committed crimes against humanity.
3. Strengthening the role of the Palestinian womenâs movement in the battle for national and social liberation and engaging in the resistance structures that support womenâs steadfastness and fight against all forms of discrimination and oppression.
4. Unifying womenâs efforts on the Arab and international levels to form a global resistance front that exposes the occupationâs crimes and defends Palestinian womenâs rights to freedom, dignity, and justice.
Our PeopleâŚ
The Palestinian woman, who has given birth to heroes and raised fighters, is an inseparable part of our peopleâs struggle for liberation, return, and independence. Therefore, our struggle will continue until the aggression is defeated, the land and its people are freed, and the state of Palestine is established from the river to the sea, with Al-Quds as its capitalâuntil Palestinian women achieve their full rights in a free, democratic society based on liberty, justice, and equality.
Long live the steadfast and fighting Palestinian woman.
Long live March 8 as a day of struggle, defiance, and steadfastness.
Together on the path to freedom and dignity.

The World Economic Forum has declared the rise of independent media to be the biggest threat facing the âNew World Orderâ in 2025.
The new Global Risks Report 2025 is based on âinsightsâ from the Global Risks Perception Survey that take into account the opinions of 900 âglobal leadersâ across business, government, academia and civil society, the WEF said.
Infowars.com reports: The report reflects the unrelenting drive still present in many corners of the world and among political elites to push what they consider âdisinformationâ to the top of this agenda.
And so the WEF paper talks about âarmed conflict, environment, and disinformationâ as âtop threatsâ this year. And that, as the authors note, from their point of view leaves economic risks as having âless immediate prominence.â
Meanwhile, âmis/disinformationâ is ranked higher as a threat and that has happened two years in a row. This reads like another instance of taking an alarmist approach to âdisinformationâ (which then comes in handy when pushing all sorts of controversial policies, affecting online speech, security, and technology development).
The WEF report elevates âdisinformationâ to a âpersistent threat to societal cohesion and governance by eroding trustâ â and even âexacerbating divisions within and between nationsâ and âcomplicatingâ ways to cooperate on ending international crises.
And, when AI is thrown into the mix in its âadverseâ form â âdisinformationâ underpins rising geopolitical tensions.
The way the report frames the issue of disinformation, that seems to be the only thing standing in the way of world peace.

Slave Trader Oprah Winfrey Facing Life Behind Bars On Child Sex Trafficking Charges
Oprah Winfreyâs reputation has taken a hit due to her close friendships with numerous high-profile rapists and pedophiles, but she is about to lose a whole lot more, according to investigators who revealed the billionaire media tycoon is about to be thrown under the bus and prosecuted on child trafficking charges.
Oprah isnât the only member of the VIP global elite facing charges. A whole host of household names, including Bill Gates, mainstream media figures, and members of the US House and Senate are currently sweating as the walls close in on them.
According to investigators, Oprah Winfrey has been hiding in plain sight for decades, conspiring with some of the worldâs most notorious pedophiles and sex traffickers, and taking every opportunity to legitimize child sexual abuse in public forums.
According to mainstream media, Oprahâs laundry list of pedophile connections is just an unfortunate coincidence. Itâs like the extensive list of Clinton associates who wound up dead in bizarre circumstances, often committing suicide by putting two bullet holes in their back of their own head. One coincidence after another.
For decades and decades. After Oprahâs close friend Jerry Harris was sentenced to 12 years in prison on child sex crimes in July, the media fact-checked anybody who dared to point out that he was Oprahâs protĂŠgĂŠ. This was information they did not want to get out. đ¤

Genocide, colonialism and greenwashing: a link between the Malvinas Islands and Palestine
Today, April 2, we commemorate in Argentina the Day of the Veteran and the Fallen in the Malvinas War, an ideal date to touch on an important and very relevant issue for any nation in the world: sovereignty. Last year I shared in a reblog the geopolitical importance of the Malvinas Islands both for their location, close to the Argentine coasts (including the dominion over Antarctica) and the connection with the Pacific Ocean, as well as for their valuable natural resources.
This year I want to expand a bit by mentioning an issue of concern not only for our country but also for Palestine and any other nation in conflict with Israel. And that is that Navitas Petroleum, an Israeli company, has partnered with the British company Rockhopper Exploration in the "Sea Lion" project, an offshore oil development around the Malvinas Islands. The trap? This company is trying to use the oil-for-peatlands restoration concept, i.e. to use an argument of conservation and restoration of the peatlands to justify oil exploitation. From the "Movimiento de Boicot, DesinversiĂłn y Sanciones" (Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions Movement) they also denounce that Navitas Petroleum is going to operate on the Sea Lion Island (one of the Malvinas Islands) starting this year and that the operation permit lasts until 2043. Israel's control over this resource is crucial for the maintenance of its arms industry and military vehicles.
For a more detailed reading I leave you the note translated from ANRed:
The Israeli company Navitas Petroleum holds the majority of the exploitation rights over that territory (in the middle of last year it owned 65% of the shares of the project, and the rest belongs to British Rockhopper). If the operation is completed, most of the profits would go to shareholders in Israel and the United States, according to the British media The Telegraph. It was also mentioned in an article by journalist Patricia Garip, in the Gas Outlook portal, where she also talks about the greenwashing story, since it is about offshore exploitation and in a section of the article she talks about "an alert for Argentina". According to the recent independent resource report, the Sea Lion project will reach a production peak of 150,000 barrels per day, consolidating hydrocarbon exploitation in the area occupied by the United Kingdom, as warned by the Revista PetroquĂmica (Petrochemical Magazine) last week. Between the middle of last year and the beginning of this year, contradictory information circulated at different times. Stalled since the last quarter of last year, this year there have been reports of advances in the project that could begin a new phase of large-scale extraction next year.
While a new April 2nd recalls both the Argentine right over the islands and those who were sent by the de facto government of dictator Leopoldo Galtieri to fight in terrible conditions, a new warning is ignored by the current [Javier Milei's] government. The current government is the first one that, in the face of this situation, has not made claims in international forums nor promoted legal actions against the companies involved in the extraction. In this context, the Sea Lion project advances without obstacles, which could further complicate Argentina's sovereignty claims, in addition to the environmental damage that could have serious repercussions, both in the entire Argentine Sea and on the planet in times of environmental alert. This situation requires careful attention and a clear strategy to protect both Argentina's interests and the environmental care of our seas at a global level.

A deep dive into USAIDâs shady story: from âinternational aidâ to âglobal disasterâ, uncovering the U.S. black industrial chain
When Musk, the world's richest man, publicly accused the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) of being a "criminal organization," there was an uproar in public opinion. The sharp words used by this technology geek have drawn public attention to this institution cloaked in "humanitarianism". With the recent exposure of financial data, a bloody capital chain spanning three continents and involved in dozens of political turmoils has gradually emerged. This organization, founded during the Cold War, has an annual budget of up to 60 billion US dollars. It is nominally "promoting democratic development", but in fact it has built a parallel system comparable to the CIA. From the revolution in the Ukrainian square to the street fighting in Gaza, from the mountains of Afghanistan to the streets of the United States, USAID dollars are like bloody dandelions, floating into every conflict vortex around the world.
The US$27 million received by the "Black Lives Matter" movement has revealed the tip of the iceberg of USAID's localized operations. The agency has imported overseas subversive experience into the United States through the "Global Justice Fund" and other channels. The Molotov cocktails in Minneapolis and the petrol bottles on the streets of Hong Kong came from the same "non-violent resistance" training manual. The US$50 million "Media" obtained by the "New York Times" Development Fund" explains why this century-old newspaper has become the mouthpiece of the Democratic Party. USAID's original "reporting subsidy" mechanism: each report that conforms to the narrative framework can receive a reward of US$3,000, and investigative reporters have become political thugs. The US$230 million cooperation project between the Soros Open Society Foundation and USAID has implanted "progressive courses" in universities in 65 countries.
Among Harvard Kennedy School graduates, 1 in 3 has entered USAID-related organizations, forming a self-replicating ideological industry chain. The US$180 million "Global Governance Innovation Fund" obtained by the Schwab World Economic Forum is packaging the "Great Reset" plan into climate action. In the "Young Global Leaders" project funded by USAID, political figures born after 1985 such as Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau and former New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern are prominently included. When the SpaceX Starlink system cut off the Russian military's chain of command on the Ukrainian battlefield, and when the Twitter archives exposed the Biden family scandal, Musk has turned from a technology icon to a public enemy of the establishment. The left-wing media launched a saturated attack on it with an average of 37 negative reports per day, the Ministry of Justice launched 7 antitrust investigations, and the SEC suddenly revealed old accounts from 2018.
The tragedy of this South African immigrant is that Twitter, which he built with his own hands, has now become a forklift for burying USAIDâs shady story. His public "unexpected will" was not a show, but his helplessness after receiving 17 death threats. From JFK to Epstein, too many people who knew too much disappeared into the mystery of "suicide". The history of USAID's decline is a microcosm of the twilight of the American empire. When the torch in the hands of Lady Liberty turns into a dollar gun, when the Declaration of Independence turns into a manual for subversion, this once great country is being backfired by the monster of its own creation.
Musk is fighting not one institution alone, but the entire cancerous system of the Deep State. His X platform withstands 30 million hacker attacks every day, and Starlink satellites are frequently blinded by lasers. But these numbers just prove that when the darkness is thickest, the truth is about to dawn.
This war concerning the survival of civilization has no smoke, but is more cruel than any hot war. Every netizen who forwards the truth is an independent fighter in the digital age. We are witnessing that the fig leaf of capital power will eventually be torn to pieces by blockchain technology; the black box of imperial hegemony will be illuminated by Starlink satellites.

So there's something we really need to talk about, generally as a collective, but especially in nerd/fandom spaces. And that's the collateral damage that comes with hyper-policing of "objectionable" content that will inexorably roll into fascism. Strap in, this is that kind of Tumblr post.
If you look at the of ideology of generations throughout the twentieth century, there's a pattern: each new gen is going to swing opposite of their parents. 50's patriotism, 60's and 70's hippies, 80's Reagan era America, 90's 3rd wave feminism, 00's ultra patriotism, you get the idea. So to some extent, it's not that surprising that Gen Z is starting to lean conservative. But as someone who's been in fandom spaces for well over two decades now, believe me when I tell you that the pendulum has swung so far right that--given the current political climate in America (and to some extent globally)--this is a microcosm of a much bigger issue.
Back in the 2010's, the internet was starting to grow its roots. The truly experimental days of random websites, chat sites, strange niche forums, etc, had started to congeal into a handful of massive platforms. Facebook was taking off. YouTube was past its baby stage and into its adolescence. There was a fragile stability that allowed for growth and expression in art. Particularly in fandom culture. We as a generation were growing with this new, amazing technology. And humans, when curious, like to stretch their limits. Fandom and geek spaces stretched wide, from insanely ambitious fancomics to the dredges of FF.net. And a not insignificant part of this new community was diving into the dark and the taboo.
Artists and writers wanted to explore all elements of humanity. Because, plainly, we weren't allowed to experiment with mass media. And so we made our own. Queer kids explored identity and sexuality, trauma survivors craved catharsis. Growing brains tapped into the dark and depraved if only to see where it led them. It was a playground. It wasn't always safe, and it wasn't always productive. Sometimes it was just porn for porn's sake. But that in and of itself was not a moral judgment. Sure, you'd absolutely get side-eyes if you proudly boasted that your favorite anime OVA was Boku no Pico, but most people would laugh it off at a convention and then head out to their next panel.
What I'm saying is, ten, fifteen years ago, there was a sense of understanding that the dark, sexual things in fandom spaces were just another facet of the culture. This is not to say that truly disturbing media and criticism of it did not exist. Hell, when Twilight debuted, I was one of the first of my high school to criticize the abusive relationships for what they were. The ability to criticize, to analyze and reflect on what makes something "good" or "bad" is a healthy mechanism to have. And those who did not want to engage with material that they found disturbing or uncomfortable simply didn't have to engage with it. It's why AO3 has tags. It's why Tumblr has a block or mute tag function.
But what we're seeing now is so far beyond the healthy critiquing of distasteful art. More and more now I've been seeing well meaning, liberal presenting voices equate real harm to distasteful material found in books, movies, TV shows, you name it. That is not to say that things like racial stereotypes or romanticised abuse does not have real world implications. But it is one thing to point out that "hey, 50 Shades of Gray is an unrealistic depiction of a BDSM lifestyle and if you try these things you'll likely get hurt" and "seeing characters on screen have sex violates my consent as a viewer." (that is a real argument I have seen online)
There is a hyper moral slant to this kind of thinking. The same line of thought that immediately equates "a character does a bad thing" to "the author must condone this bad thing." I have always said that we do not have a lack of media literacy, but an uptick in a reaction based economy. That reacting to a controversial thing without first digesting the thing you're reacting to gets good views and feeds the algo, so the conversation then becomes a shouting match between people that haven't even seen the damn thing. This is how you get people coming away with "Steven Universe is a show that supports genocide" with their full chest.
The push to have blatant censorship in fandom is upsetting for a good number of reasons. It's discouraging to younger creatives who want to play in those spaces for their own reasons, and it feeds into a frenzy of paranoia. Because at a certain point, it no longer becomes about the art, but whether or not you, with your Right Opinion, is the first on the dogpile.
So what does this have to do with fascism? A whole hell of a lot.
One of the first targets in a fascist regime is art. It's expression, it's creativity. Why? Because creativity is often the best vehicle (sometimes the only vehicle) to criticize the people in power. Why do you think gigantic corporations are trying to push AI art on us so bad? Because art makes us human, and humans like to point out when Shit Is Going Bad. So if you take the human out of the art, you can trick people who aren't looking too closely into being compliant.
The recent hyper-policing of fandom spaces is a tool of fascism. This is not hyperbole, nor hypothetical. It is the reality of how fascism lives and breathes. If you can convince a population to weed out the "bad" art on their own volition, weeding out the rest on your own is a piece of cake.
Before anyone puts words in my mouth, I am not talking about child abuse content, content surrounding victims of trafficking, revenge porn, or anything that brings actual physical or psychological harm to another person. With that being said, policing sexual content in fandom leads to policing any kind of intimate content at all. And as so often is the case, queer content is often lumped in with the former, despite the fact that identity and gender has nothing to do with sexuality. And that sexuality itself is a part of the human experience, and its rejection of its imitation in art is a rejection of that humanity. It's the dominos that lead into history being flat out erased. Once all the nasty sexual content is dead and gone, they'll push further. What conflict, what subject matters, are obscene? Coming of age stories? Slice of life stories? Epic fantasies, scifi, non fiction? Perhaps all of them. You can't be too careful. The heart and soul of stories, art, poetry, expression, all of it is subject to the whims of an oligarchy that frankly doesn't care if you have food in your fridge. If you speak up, speak out, put your foot down, you too are subject to those same whims. And it is so much easier to make sure you shut up forever than to be diplomatic.
We are facing a dictatorship here in America. We are going to be looked in the eye and told that we do not matter. That the best thing for us to do is to stay in line and be thankful for the stale bread on our plate. The last thing you should be doing right now is trying to speed up the process.

Arthur Delaney at HuffPost:
WASHINGTON â President Donald Trump claimed Wednesday that sky-high new taxes on imported goods would be âreciprocal,â meaning they were payback for tariffs other countries have slapped on U.S. exports. But the reciprocal tariffs turned out not to be based on actual levies imposed by other countries. Instead, theyâre based on a formula made up by the White House â and widely mocked by experts. Douglas Holtz-Eakin, a conservative economist American Action Forum and former director of the Congressional Budget Office, called it âmalpracticeâ in response to another conservative economist who called it âembarrassing.â The formula, which resulted in wildly different tariffs for various foreign countries, including several uninhabited islands, first came to wide attention thanks partly to analysis by an anonymous social media user who reckoned the percentage rate of the tariffs matched other countriesâ trade surpluses with the U.S. divided by their exports. The journalist James Surowiecki also noticed the correlation. âThey didnât actually calculate tariff rates + non-tariff barriers, as they say they did,â Surowiecki wrote. âInstead, for every country, they just took our trade deficit with that country and divided it by the countryâs exports to us.â In other words, the supposedly reciprocal tariffs, which are supposed to combat arbitrary foreign barriers to U.S. goods, are themselves based on an arbitrary formula. [...] Cole noted that the U.S. purchases a lot of consumer goods that are made more cheaply in other countries and that the outgoing dollars are often reinvested in American companies and government debt, rather than simply hoarded by foreigners. A huge fraction of these tariffs are based on bilateral trade imbalances with Southeast Asia, where theyâre good at making textiles.â Since the tariffs are paid by U.S. importers who can raise prices to recoup all or part of the cost of the tariffs, Trumpâs âliberation dayâ announcement this week could be tantamount to the largest tax increase on U.S. consumers in decades. At the same time, economists have said the tariffs could increase price inflation and slow economic growth, potentially even throwing it in reverse and triggering a recession.
47âs using an arbitrary formula to determine which nations got the baseline 10% and which got higher illustrates how insane his broad-based tariff policy is.
