Followup to this post because it's a mildly spoilery critique, but fuck Allsand Island and it's stupid-ass unfightable sharks. 1 puzzle where you have to avoid those bastards is fine but why are they everywhere???

i genuinely love the "ya gotta have a gimmick" aspect of detective stuff (and the fact that it's been going on since at least Sherlock Holmes - there are a couple of really bad just post Holmes detectives like Professor Augustus S. F. X. Van Dusen, "who—with only the power of ratiocination, unravels problems of outrageous criminous activity") especially when the series runs longer and the gimmick starts getting more and more stretched, the way Bones starts off hewing pretty close to its premise & by the end has almost forgotten it. how do you find tens of cases related to your detective's very specific area of expertise? well, sometimes you make your detective magic. and sometimes you stretch the definition of that area. and sometimes you do both. and i think it's beautiful.
