WIBTA for giving my coworker a "personal hygiene kit"?
I noticed someone before send an ask abt a coworker who smells (no it wasn't me). My situation is similar.
I'll try to keep this short, but I have a coworker who just simply reeks and is generally unwashed. I get complaints from customers all the time about it, and the manager has spoken with her at least twice now. She's a nice person, and I have nothing against her personally, but it's hard to be within 10 ft of her.
Normally I'd just try and avoid her since it can't really be helped, but that's the issue. I work at a small franchise in the beauty industry, which means that a. The store is small, so she fills up the store with her odor, and b. Looks and presentation are very important since we have to display and use the products we sell. (Without revealing too much, I work at a wholesale salon supplier. We basically sell all the hair and some body products cosmetologists need for their clients.)
Both my other coworker and I (there's only 4 of us including the manager) have approached the manager about it, and to her credit she's attempted to handle it twice. But it hasn't actually changed anything.
I was thinking that instead of just telling her (bc I'm sure she hears about it elsewhere) that she needs to take better care of herself (which admittedly is rude), I can give her a little kit that includes some shampoo/conditioner and brush/comb from the shop, as well as some soap and most importantly deodorant.
I'd hate to come across as passive aggressive, but the manager has mentioned before that if something doesn't change, she could very well be fired. She's a hard worker and she's perfectly fine in terms of character, and I do feel bad for her if she has some condition like Bromhidrosis. I also know that depression and related issues can lead to a lack of care for hygiene. I'm not one to disregard other's medical conditions, physical or mental, but unfortunately due to the industry hygiene is a must.
So, WIBTA if I attempted to take matters into my own hands and helped kickstart better hygiene habits, so to speak?
What are these acronyms?

Ninjago #1: Ninjago's Potrayal In Webseries
I've actually deliberated over this for a while. Since in the webseries, instead of people sized Lego people, all the characters would be portrayed as human (both because that's always how I've seen them in my head and maybe hopefully Lego Team would consider the change different enough where they won't try and DMCA me) and I was putting Ninjago in the real world instead of its own realm as its portrayed in canon (again, to hopefully dissuade Lego Team from wanting to sue the brakes off my ass and also just because I think it'd be interesting), I thought of just portraying Ninjago City. But well, I've always been a sucker for fantasy, especially urban fantasy. This also gives me a great excuse to learn more about Asia's mythology and how all the different regions and the countries in those regions interpret it! So yay, silver linings!
So, in the webseries, Ninjago would be its own country. I recently got into Ace Attorney (I have the Phoenix Wright trilogy on my Switch and i'm on Bridge to Turnabout) and while looking over the TVTropes page (I do that for all the media i'm into) and watching YouTube videos about Ace Attorney, learned all about the localizations and Japanifornia. So, that's what i'm basing Ninjago off of, which makes sense since, in canon, Ninjago also has western inspiration in addition to the Japanese inspiration. Which brings me to the first fun fact I learned while researching Japan (since Ninjago has a lot of japanese inspiration), I learned that Japan has free healthcare! Well, mostly free, they have to pay 30% of their medical bills themselves, but hey, considering that I live in a capitalist hell state, I'll take it! Also, according to the websites I've looked at for more information, the insurance is provided by the state.
(I now lowkey wonder what kind of insurance the ninja have. It can't be SHI because that's for everyone that's employed full-time by a large or medium company. And last time I checked, none of the ninja work for a medium or large company. Unless Cyrus Borg has them on his payroll and just lies to the government every year that he employs the ninja).
I really loved the realm merge in Dragons Rising and the fact that there were all these different.... races? Species? now in Ninjago because of it and how they had a whole place where all these different cultures could gather and hang out and sell wares and food and clothes and stuff from their home realms and they have contests and events and I just.... I really loved it. Like LOVED it. I just love when they have blended societies in media. Which brings me right back to my love of urban fantasy. I love love LOVE Rise of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles and the whole mystical yokai city under New York they had in the show and how there were hidden hangout places for the yokai up in New York. So, taking elements from ROTTNMT and Dragons Rising, instead of a realm merge, Yokai have been part of Ninjago's history from the start and by modern day have completely integrated into regular society. So, there's shops run by yokai that sell all kinds of mystic stuff as well as restaurants that sell yokai cuisine. Also, dragons have also been part of Ninjago's history since the start and yes, it's pretty much like how Berk from the How To Train Your Dragon Franchise would have been if it was set in the modern day instead of viking times.
There's so much more I want to talk about: how machines and AI like Zane and P.I.X.A.L are viewed, Yokai shops and cuisine, what daily life is like in Ninjago City (Ninjago in general) with dragons flying around, passing through or even just setting up roost there, the Yokai that live in Ninjago and Ninjago City, the gangs that have sprung up over the years (since the webseries would focus on the Ninja's children), how the Serpentine are doing, ect, but this post is already quite long so I'll have to talk about these things in separate posts.
Since I think I've covered all the basics of how I would portray Ninjago in my hypothetical webseries, i'm going to end this post here and share future thoughts I have on Ninjago's portrayal in said hypothetical webseries in future posts. I hope you all enjoyed this post!

AU where Ryan was in Nooshy’s position + How to subtly write in a love story.
I should start this off with saying that I love Nooshy! She’s one of my favourite characters in the franchise. She’s amazing! This is just an AU inspired by La'Ron Readus on Youtube (his video on Johnny and Ryan is really good by the way). This AU is in no way negative towards Nooshy and in it she would be a central character in Sing 3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
To begin, start with some main changes mainly including more interactions starting off at the first scene together.
When Johnny first enters the class, Ryan is seen looking at him and approaching him when Buster leaves, seeming to be about to introduce himself.
Ryan is seen wincing when Klaus corrects Johnny, referencing that he knows that it hurts and feels bad for him.
Ryan is shown reaching to help Johnny up when he falls, Klaus hits his hand away and refuses to let him help, Ryan seems worried and upset about what is happening.
When Johnny has his panic attack, Ryan follows him outside, clearly looking for him and crouches next to him when he finds him while looking extremely worried and puts his hand on Johnny’s back as the screen fades to black.
When Johnny walks out of the skate shop, he walks up to Ryan who was leaning on the wall next to the doors who smiles at him and offers for them to go get something to eat, Johnny smiles and agrees and Ryan swings an arm over his shoulder as they walk.
Cut to the dinner scene, light teasing about the show and dancing in general, Ryan reassures him that he is doing fine and has talent, light flirting with the singing scene and a waitress compliments on them on being a cute couple, both kinda panicking but Ryan pushes past it and suggests them practicing together, Johnny agreeing eagerly.
Klaus gets really angry at the idea of Johnny and Ryan training together in private, even though Ryan points out that he’s done something like this before and it would only benefit them in the long run, Klaus finally agrees but demands to talk to Ryan alone, Ryan agrees, looking scared but tells Johnny it’s alright and to head to the practice space.
Cut to Johnny falling while doing the routine, Ryan appears behind him, laughing under his breath, and they begin practicing.
R: *Snort of Laughter* Maybe let’s wait to pull out those moves pretty boy.
J: Sorry.
R: Don’t apologize, you’re doing really good!
J: *Raises Eyebrows*
R: Seriously! You’re doing better than I would be if I just started.
J: That’s not how Klaus sees it.
R: Well, he’s wrong. You’re really talented Johnny, we just have to build up your confidence and you’ll be a pro in no time!
J: Really?
R: I promise, come on! Let’s start with this…
Training montage but intertwined with scenes of the two seeming to just be hanging out and practice scenes where the two start to seem overly touchy and as the scenes go on they’re shown closer and closer together, final scene being them doing it correctly as a show up to Klaus, ending with them hugging and seeming like there’s a kind of tension, and Klaus glares at them and mutters “you traitor” at Ryan as the class congratulates them (this way Klaus attacking Johnny and Ryan onstage doesn’t seem to come out of nowhere as we now know he’s resentful).
When the group meets Calloway, Ryan grabs Johnny's arm when Clay opens the door. Ryan is crouched next to Crawly when she wakes up, moving a cloth off her head hinting that he acted as a medic when she passed out. Ryan is standing next to Johnny when the tv interview is playing, puts his hand on his back as if trying to comfort him. When the bad guys show up at the door, Ryan jumps and grabs Johnny's hand which Johnny squeezes back. Shares confused and scared look with Johnny when Buster says they’re going to jump but is seen helping Meena jump as Johnny helps Rosita.
Johnny and Ryan run next to each other in the forest area and jump over the railing to the street in sync.
When Buster’s clearance card declines at the set, Ryan reaches past him “Here, let me try…” and uses Klaus’s card with a wink to Johnny when the door opens, “looks like he’s helpful after all” at which Johnny smiles and laughs as they duck inside and a few of the others pat him on the back.
Ryan calls the other dancers to set, them running up to him when they arrive, treating Ryan as troupe leader immediately with Johnny smiling at him from the sidelines.
Johnny apparently introduces Ryan to Marcus in the background of a scene with him standing between the two as they shake hands, Marcus has an eyebrow raised and Ryan looks nervous.
When Klaus sabotages the scene by attacking both boys when they’re on stage, both try to protect each other from his abuse, especially targeting Ryan for “betraying him” and the troupe. Marcus is shown to be being held back by Stan saying “He’s eighteen Markie, give him a minute to handle it. We’ll deal with it later.”
When they finally beat Klaus, the two raise their hands impulsively as if to declare victors in a show of unity, causing the audience to burst into cheers. Klaus slinks off in defeat and Marcus and Stan are about to follow him until Barry alerts them of Crystal’s arrival. Johnny and Ryan quickly separate, blushing and looking awkward.
Ryan and Johnny are in the background backstage standing next to each other, shoulders brushing.
Johnny and Ryan both try to grab Buster when Crystal grabs him but miss.
When Rosita rescues Buster, Johnny and Ryan kiss quickly in excitement and immediately share a shocked but happy look before hurrying to check if Buster’s okay.
On the bus, there are other dancers in the spare seats, Rosita and Norman are asleep with their kids, and Ryan is cuddled up asleep on Johnny’s shoulder with one earbud while Johnny appears to be resting with his head on top of Ryan’s and the other earbud in but he raises his head when he waves to his dad from the window before putting his head back and closing his eyes.
When the bus stops, Ryan and Johnny are standing next to each other with Ryan holding a hand out like he was reassuring the other dancers.
When the Majestic news is announced, Johnny glances over at Ryan to make sure he’s okay with it and Ryan nods after glancing back at the other dancers who nod. At Clay’s acceptance, the two hug excitedly and Johnny kisses Ryan on the cheek.
When the group is walking onto set, Ryan and Johnny are shown holding hands and catching their staffs in sync when they are tossed to them by another dancer.
With this AU, it’s never explicitly stated that the two are a couple (you could even remove the kisses if you want) but it is clear that they are much closer than just friends as they are willing to risk a lot for each other and even have a meeting between a partner and a parent scene that would be indicative of a relationship. And that, Illumination, is how you subtly write in a love story without making it a main or forced feeling plot point.
#sing#sing 2#rynny#sing rynny#sing johnny#sing ryan#i write this instead of doing late work#this is in no way negative towards nooshy#i love her#this is just a rynny centered au#Ryan and Johnny deserve happiness#johnny x ryan#johnny is gay#and so is ryan#ryan deserves more screen time#and lines#btw who was his voice actor#i can't find it anywhere

if your ocs are having a movie night, which movie does everyone want to watch? what movie do they end up watching?
anon thank you SO MUCH for asking about my ocs I literally was so happy when I saw this ask AAAAAA!!!!!
Solie- probably hasn’t seen that many movies at all yet, (since she came to life a matter of months ago) and is curious about film as an interesting storytelling medium. She is quite a visual learner and I could see her learning more about the world by seeing stuff in movies. She probably can't handle the horror ones, especially not if theyre gore-based, since she already gets vivisected by Vick on nearly a daily basis for scientific inquiry. She would probably enjoy movies about people having a good time, without a lot of suffering. Typically ones with lower stakes and lighter plot lines like The Little Mermaid or Sleepover.
Vick- into lots of horror movies mostly, with some sprinkles of other movies like dramas. Growing up, his parents were a little neglectful and let him get away with a lot, so he started watching very gorey movies earlier than most children. He knows that some of the others can't handle any of the super horrifying or graphic movies that he likes, so for a group night he won't push that too hard. Probably an enjoyer of Tusk, or the Saw franchise.
Mirenzeth- likes the mystery genre, or anything that requires complex thinking and analysis. She likes to use her brain at any chance she gets, and doesn't watch a lot of movies for purely entertainment, rather than an activity to keep her thinking. On very rare occasion, she may watch something lighter if she is feeling stressed or tired, (those are usually the types of movies that Solie likes, so they sometimes watch it together) she also can't stand medical inaccuracy in movies, or medical workers being misrepresented in the stories. She would enjoy stuff like Knives Out, or Get Out
Corv- before he donated his body to science, a lot of his time was spent depressed at home, so he had plenty of time to develop a taste in movies before he met the rest of the group. He would watch a lot of comedies, as a form of escapism. He's not very upfront about it, but he also likes musicals too (he wanted to join theatre in school but never did, and regretted that) so he loves hearing a good soundtrack as well. He is always open minded to new movies that other people want to check out as well. He would like Pitch Perfect, Little Shop of Horrors, and Chicago.
Deirdre- growing up, her parents werent around that often, so she was practically raised by her older brother, William. As a kid, most of her taste in film was the kinds of stuff he would watch, that she would eagerly join in on. He would show her drag race shows, occasionally some reality TV. When she got older and developed her own taste in movies, she typically liked the ones with characters rebelling against something, or taking control of their lives for once. I think I could see her enjoying multiple genres, but with that general theme. She would probably like Jennifer's Body, or Legally Blonde
Apple- when he was a kid, he didn't watch many movies because of his parents being strict and keeping him busy with the family reanimation business. Because of that, he sort of missed out on some of the "classics", that he occasionally tries to get in touch with as he grows up, especially after his parents kick him out. When he's around other people, he pretends to only like the really gritty, serious, and sad movies, but he actually likes a wide range of them, just not many of the modern ones. Stuff like Titanic, Carrie, and Dead Poets Society.
(Once again, thanks so much for asking, if anyone else has anything to ask/say about my ocs then please feel free, I will literally always be happy to talk about them :3)

Step-by-Step Guide to Apollo Pharmacy Franchise: Cost, Fees, and Financial Returns
Apollo Pharmacy, a prominent brand under the Apollo Hospitals Group, has solidified its reputation as one of India's most trusted pharmacy chains. With a robust presence and emphasis on providing quality healthcare products, Apollo Pharmacy continues to expand rapidly, appealing to entrepreneurs looking to tap into the growing healthcare retail market. Before investing, it's important to consider the Apollo Pharmacy franchise cost to evaluate the financial commitment. Partnering with Apollo offers a gateway into the pharmaceutical industry with a well-established support system, strong brand recognition, and a steady customer base—an attractive proposition for those seeking a stable business opportunity in healthcare.
Step 1: Understanding the Initial Investment and Franchise Costs
Launching an Apollo Pharmacy franchise requires a comprehensive understanding of the initial costs involved. Here’s a breakdown of the primary expenses for starting a franchise.
Franchise Fee
Overview: The franchise fee grants franchisees the rights to Apollo’s brand, training, and initial setup support.
Estimated Cost: Generally, the Apollo Pharmacy franchise fee ranges from INR 2-3 lakhs.
What It Covers: The fee typically includes access to the Apollo brand, training programs, assistance with store setup, and a portion of marketing support.
Store Setup and Inventory
Location and Lease: A pharmacy should ideally be located in a high-footfall area, such as near hospitals, residential zones, or shopping areas. Leasing or purchasing the property will vary based on the specific location.
Interior Setup and Branding: Costs here include shelves, counters, display units, Apollo-branded signage, lighting, and fixtures. A professional, well-organized layout that reflects the Apollo brand is essential.
Inventory Costs: The initial stock of pharmaceuticals, OTC items, and wellness products needs to be well-rounded to cater to customer demand. The initial inventory costs can range from INR 4-6 lakhs.
Licenses and Permits
Pharmacy License: Operating a pharmacy requires specific licenses from relevant authorities, including a drug license, which is essential for selling prescription medications.
Estimated Cost: Licensing fees and permits vary, but generally budget around INR 50,000–1 lakh for these requirements.
Total Initial Investment: Based on these costs, the total initial investment generally ranges from INR 8–15 lakhs.
Step 2: Monthly Fees and Operating Expenses
In addition to the initial setup costs, operating an Apollo Pharmacy franchise involves ongoing monthly expenses.
Royalties and Marketing Fees
Royalty Structure: Apollo typically charges a royalty fee, calculated as a percentage of monthly sales revenue, which covers continued brand and operational support.
Estimated Cost: Royalty fees usually range from 5-8% of monthly revenue.
Marketing Fees: Apollo may also require a contribution toward brand-wide marketing efforts.
Operational Costs
Staffing: Salaries for pharmacists, store managers, and other staff members. Total staffing costs depend on the number of employees and regional salary standards.
Utilities and Rent: Rent, electricity, and other utilities will vary by location, but these costs should be anticipated as part of regular expenses.
Inventory Replenishment: Keeping the inventory stocked with essential medications and health products is crucial. Monthly restocking costs typically range from INR 1-2 lakhs, depending on sales volume and inventory turnover.
Step 3: Potential Earnings and Financial Returns
Operating an Apollo Pharmacy franchise has multiple revenue streams and opportunities for profit. Here’s an outline of the potential earnings and returns.
Product Sales and Margins
Prescription Medications and OTC Products: The primary revenue comes from prescription medications, OTC drugs, and wellness products. Margins for pharmaceutical products can range from 10-20% for medications and 20-30% for wellness and personal care items.
Additional Health Products: Health supplements, skincare products, and first-aid essentials offer higher profit margins and can supplement overall revenue.
Additional Services
Health Services: Some Apollo Pharmacy locations provide basic health services, such as blood pressure checks and minor diagnostics, which help attract repeat customers.
Special Promotions: Running customer loyalty programs and promotions can boost customer retention, thus increasing revenue.
Return on Investment (ROI)
Break-Even Timeline: Many franchisees achieve profitability within 18-24 months. This varies based on location, customer demand, and management effectiveness.
Growth Potential: As demand for healthcare services continues to rise, well-performing stores may consider expanding to additional locations or adding complementary health services, enhancing profitability.
Step 4: Application Process and Requirements
If you’re interested in starting an Apollo Pharmacy franchise, it’s important to understand the application process and what Apollo looks for in potential franchisees.
Eligibility Criteria
Experience: While experience in retail or healthcare is advantageous, it’s not always required. However, having a basic understanding of business management can be beneficial.
Financial Stability: Franchisees should demonstrate the financial capability to meet initial and ongoing expenses.
Application Steps
Inquiry: Submit an inquiry through Apollo’s official website or contact their franchise team.
Initial Review: Apollo reviews the application and, if selected, provides a proposal.
Site Selection and Approval: Apollo conducts a feasibility check on the proposed location to ensure it aligns with the brand’s requirements.
Agreement Signing: If the site is approved, the franchisee and Apollo finalize and sign the franchise agreement.
Setup and Training: Apollo provides training and support, including guidance on inventory management, customer service, and compliance with pharmacy regulations.
Support from Apollo
Training Programs: Franchisees receive comprehensive training on daily operations, customer service, and compliance with healthcare standards.
Marketing and Brand Support: Apollo Pharmacy assists with brand-wide advertising and marketing strategies, which are beneficial for local market penetration.
Ongoing Operational Support: Apollo provides operational resources and ongoing guidance to help franchisees manage and grow their business.
Step 5: Tips for Success in the Pharmacy Business
Running a successful pharmacy franchise goes beyond initial investment and involves strategic planning and effective management. Here are some tips to help ensure success:
1. Choose a High-Traffic Location
Positioning the pharmacy near hospitals, residential complexes, or commercial hubs can enhance foot traffic and improve sales. High-traffic locations can accelerate ROI and attract a steady stream of customers.
2. Prioritize Customer Service
Friendly, knowledgeable staff and efficient service create a positive experience, encouraging repeat visits and word-of-mouth referrals. Building good customer relationships is key in the healthcare sector.
3. Manage Inventory Efficiently
Maintaining a balanced inventory is essential to prevent overstocking and wastage. Monitor demand patterns to keep popular items stocked and avoid shortages of essential medicines.
4. Engage in Community Marketing
Conducting community health camps or workshops can raise local awareness and build goodwill. Engaging with the community helps the pharmacy become a go-to health resource.
Conclusion: Is an Apollo Pharmacy Franchise Right for You?
Owning an Apollo Pharmacy franchise is a promising venture in the healthcare industry, offering the opportunity to run a profitable business with the support of an established and reputable brand. The initial investment typically ranges between INR 8-15 lakhs, and with effective management, franchisees can expect to break even within 18-24 months. This franchise opportunity appeals to those passionate about healthcare and customer service, providing a chance to make a positive impact on the community while achieving financial returns. For aspiring entrepreneurs committed to building a stable, service-oriented business, an Apollo Pharmacy franchise could be a rewarding choice.

The franchise model and owned stores will create a strong offline presence, while the DavaDiscount e-commerce platform ensures a robust online presence across the nation. By offering a wide range of branded and generic products at a 25% discount, Rajnish Wellness is making medications more accessible to the public.
In its first year of operations, Rajnish Wellness anticipates sales exceeding ₹350 crore and a profit after tax (PAT) of over ₹35 crore, reflecting a promising 10% PAT margin. This growth is supported by fixed contracts, such as the 270-store initiative, which provide a steady source of revenue and predictable profits.
Currently, with revenues at ₹77 crore and a PAT of ₹1 crore, Rajnish Wellness aims to transform affordable healthcare through both offline and online strategies. For investors, Rajnish Wellness represents an exciting opportunity, showcasing the potential for significant growth in an essential industry.

A low like this has won the hearts, minds, and souls of dilettantes from around the globe just because of its nobility, balance, intensity, and end. the wonder of the low lay within the proven fact that it might advertise its flavor while not fanfare, nonetheless making individualities swish their speeches with a delicate- taste. Another specialty of the megacity lies in its donation of an analogous low in astounding variations. variety of feathers is offered, right from a patterned down interpretation to a 1 with pure milk, bittersweet, dark, and each, all custom-made to the vagrancy of the buyer. Yet, it's a coffee that stands on its own, with no blend of any flavors, be they artificial or natural.
The specialty of Kumbakonam degree coffee lies in its chastity as there is terribly less chicory mixed to advance a robust aftertaste and within the high chastity of the milk employed in its medication. The strange still genial reality is that the megacity wherever this low has begun does not announce or annunciate its hand chow in any way. however there are carbons each over, Kumbakonam has nothing to try and do with any of them.
Strong credit for launching and depleting the degree coffee constructs and creating it related to Kumbakonam goes to a gentleman named Panchapikesa Iyer. He was the owner of Lakshmi Vilas, a structure that had a coffee club. coffee would flow in constantly from the wee hours of the first morning till late in the evening and thus the milk was sourced from humor cows that were maintained in a veritable cow barn right behind the structure. The story goes that the coffee club was therefore well-liked that no rubberneck ever left the Tabernacle megacity without stopping by to enjoy a coffee from the coffee club.
The secret lay not solely within the milk but also within the process of preparing and cooking the coffee sap. The coffee sap was repast in material pots on rustic fires until a splitting sound was detected. The sap was generally of the peaberry, robusta, or colony variety from rough tracts in Chikmagalur and thus the remainder of the fiefdom. A slicking shininess visible on the coffee sap was a sign that the coffee was repast. also, it used to be crushed in a veritably homemade hand grinder.
moment, gas ranges have replaced sentry ranges and milk isn't sourced directly from cows within the chalet. however fashionable technology has replicated several of those archaic processes and saved time, the excellence of the flavor still stands not solely within the sap, and thus the riding still within the milk and thus the medication likewise. this can be actuality hallmark of the Kumbakonam degree coffee.

SOM INFOMATION ABOUT TRAVEL AGENCY
A commercial shop or government agency that works on behalf of lodging or travel service providers to provide travel and tourist services is referred to as a travel agent. for every location, many kinds of trip packages. Outdoor activities, airlines, car rentals, cruises, hotels, railways, travel insurance, tour packages, insurance, guidebooks, access to airport VIP lounges, logistical arrangements for transporting luggage and medical supplies to travelers upon request, public transportation schedules, car rentals, and services change offices are all things that travel agents can offer. For airlines without offices in a specific location, travel agents may also serve as generic sales representatives. A travel agent's primary responsibility is to serve as the supplier's agent when marketing travel-related goods and services. As travel advisors, they are also known. Except when reserving a hotel room or cabin for a group excursion like a wedding, honeymoon, or other group event, they do not have inventory on hand.
Enterprise plan
It is common for suppliers to pay commissions to travel brokers as well as other rewards and incentives. Airline commissions are often lower than those paid by hotel owners and tour operators to travel agencies. The commissions and other perks a travel agency receives are sometimes unknown to the consumer. In the United States, 1 193 travel agents were polled in 2016, and the results showed that on average, commissions account for 78% of their income while fees account for 22%.
Technology for travel
The subsidiaries of Amadeus CRS, Galileo GDS, Saber, and Worldspan are among the travel agencies that use mainframe booking systems, sometimes referred to as global distribution systems (GDS). by Travelport, which enables price comparison and grouping among various hotel and airline providers. Online and offline travel agencies may or may not promptly confirm reservations made via them. In contrast to online travel agencies, metadata search engines and crawling websites like Skyscanner, Kayak.com, Rome2rio, and TripAdvisor may or may not have their own booking engine and instead provide search query results and then direct traffic to service providers or online travel agencies for bookings. Work with airline consolidation businesses is another option for travel agencies.
Organ varieties
On the list of top-earning travel companies, Booking Holdings and Expedia Group—both online travel firms—are the two biggest players. Known as "multiples" in the UK, travel agencies may be worldwide corporations. They might also be tiny, independent businesses or medium-sized organizations, or "miniples" as they are called in the UK. They may be set up as a server, franchise, or corporate structure, as in the case of CWT, or as a limited liability company, a single proprietorship, or they can be. Traditional travel agents could be independent contractors or employees of travel companies. In one instance of a franchised travel company, Helloworld Travel, the agent has access to a private system for ordering and reserving items. While the majority of point-to-point travel is now booked online, conventional travel agencies specialize in certain markets including business travel, luxury travel, cruises, complicated journeys, and significant as well as unique vacations. The demands of upper-class commuters in cities or suburbs, tourists with disabilities, seniors over 60, women traveling alone, LGBT tourism, or a specific group interested in a similar activity, such as a sport, are examples of other niches. A few examples include CWT, which focuses on business travel, and StudentUniverse and STA Travel, which cater to young travelers. To save expenses or provide concierge services, many individuals employ remote work. Agents with in-depth local knowledge and expertise in areas like cruises or cultural tourism might serve as "travel advisors." Many traditional agents prefer the name "travel adviser" over "travel agent" to stress their highly valuable advice, knowledge, and connections.
As an alternative to using travel agencies in their own country of residency, there are local direct booking agents that link customers with travel experts in the nation they want to visit. Numerous locations are offered by foreign travel companies, as well as those by domestic travel firms that are established there and have local knowledge.

Workplace burnout in hospitals is raging, and not just in the burn units. In 2021, HHS.gov noted that at least 54% of medical professionals are suffering from at least one medical illness, and hospitals cannot maintain the staffing necessary to treat their employees the way they deserve. Healthcare professionals are exhausted, but they feel like they have no place to go. They have the know-how to help, and they believe that the only way to use their skills is to push past the toxicity and bear it.
However, the proactive health and wellness space has been growing exponentially over the past decade, with anticipated growth rates to skyrocket over the next several years. Some savvy healthcare professionals and estheticians have found their way to the wellness industry and have never looked back. By investing in a health and wellness franchise, burned out, stressed, and mistreated healthcare workers can use their skills and own a business that can set them up for future success.
A difficult aspect in leaving a familiar environment is the risk involved in finding something potentially better, or potentially much worse. And with all the franchise options in the wellness space, it can be overwhelming for medical professionals to know where to look. Certain franchises offer several services while others only provide one, and some might not even emphasize the importance of medical knowhow in their employees. However, this article examines 3 health and wellness franchises with locations nationwide that would provide excellent opportunities for professionals to recover their passion for healing once more.
Liquivida
Founder of Liquivida, Samael Amaury Tejada (Sam for short), is a medical professional himself and he only hires the best to join his team and expand his brand. Their website boasts more than 15 medical providers who have joined their ranks, ranging from paramedics and Registered Nurses to Physician Assistants, Nurse Practitioners, and Doctors of Medicine. Estheticians have also found a home in Liquivida as they work alongside nurses to help people look and feel their best.
Liquivida also offers an opportunity to pursue entrepreneurial dreams through their franchise program. The Liquivida franchise program is well-established with over 20 franchised locations from New Jersey to Arizona, and they have different options for people to take the plunge into the therapy services they offer. First, any medical practice with trained personnel can become an IV kit provider, where they offer Liquivida signature IV treatments. The next tier is to open a Liquivida Lounge, where owners can set up shop in an existing medical office or spa and generate sales by offering IV therapy to a diverse group of clients in a room branded and retrofitted for a Liquivida Lounge. Finally, Liquivida franchisees can open a brick and mortar storefront, Liquivida Wellness Center which can sell a variety of wellness options in high demand such as weight management, nutrition counseling, medical aesthetics, age management, skincare and supplements, all with the exceptional knowledge and experience of Liquivida’s medical professionals.
Sam Tejada mentioned that once a franchisee gets access to its resources, everything is ready for them to “take it, run with it, and start making money.” This is particularly important when a lot of people tend to overlook major safety and compliance controls that need to be in effect when opening a medical practice. Liquivida makes it easy and can provide the necessary tools for healthcare professionals and estheticians to become the leaders of a relaxing, healing environment while still practicing the skills that they worked for years to achieve.
Liquivida promotes healing from the inside out with a focus on managing the aging process with certainty and style. Instead of merely covering up the symptoms, they work to address the cause of visible problems with personalized assessments of the body’s inner workings. Each aesthetic treatment option offered requires a knowledgeable and trained professional to ensure the best results for the clients. Liquivida understands the caliber of professionals needed to provide the services they offer, and they believe that those healing minds can also be exceptional leaders as franchise owners.
Ideal Image
Ideal Image is another franchise that boasts a high number of qualified medical professionals and estheticians to administer their services. At Ideal Image, patients have access to treatments such as botox and fillers, cool sculpting, laser hair removal, and skin lifting therapy. They welcome medical professionals into the space and list the medical directors by state and location on their website. They also promise patients the “most accessible network of doctors and medical professionals” at each of their facilities.
Most of the Ideal Images practices seem to focus on healing from the outside-in. They want every client to look and feel their best, and they also advertise an excellent franchise opportunity. They note that the growth of the industry as a whole is exploding, and that medical professionals can become a part of their 150+ locations nationwide. They offer a “pay for performance” model where certain fees are tied to the location’s success. Ideal Image franchises gain access to the sales teams, marketing, and clinic operating systems of the renowned brand.
Restore Hyper Wellness
With over 125 locations and plenty of service offerings, Restore Hyper Wellness could also be a worthwhile switch for burned out medical professionals to still use their skills and lead others in a growing industry. Clients at Restore Hyper Wellness can receive many treatments including cryotherapy, light therapy, IV drip therapy and biomarker assessments, and they believe that these treatments can affect each aspect of their clients’ lives.

May I request some Bishop (Aliens) Headcanons about his interactions/relationships with the marines. His friendships with them are super underrated and I wish the movie showed more of that. He definitely had some sort of friendship with Hudson no one can tell me otherwise. Thank you and have a good day 🥺
Bishop Headcanons - His friendship with the Colonial Marines
A/N: Thanks for requesting this Anon!! I really wanted to write headcanons for Bishops relationship with the marines, but I'm even happier finding out someone wanted the same thing enough to request it. The Alien Franchise is so underrated in the fic writing and fandom side of things imo (or at least the older Alien films).
Pairings: None.
Characters: Lance Bishop, Al Apone, Cynthia Dietrich, Mark Drake, Colette Ferro, Ricco Frost, Scott Gorman, Dwayne Hicks, William Hudson, Daniel Spunkmeyer, Jeanette Vasquez
RATING: PG
⚠️Warnings!: Hudson being Hudson
Bishop & Apone
✨Apone has a soft spot for Bishop, even if it isn't really seen that often.
✨He respects Bishop's intelligence and dedication to protecting the unit, even if it's because he's programmed to do so.
✨ They’ve played chess together on a couple occasions when Apone was bored, and even though Bishop wins nearly every time, they still take pleasure in playing the game together.
Bishop & Dietrich
✨Dietrich and Bishop had first met because both spend a decent amount of time working for the corps in a medical and scientific capacity.
✨Though she isn't as close with Bishop as other members of the team, she likes how gentle he always is with anyone who's injured.
✨ Mostly converses with her about family back home and how excited she is to see her daughter next time she gets leave.
Bishop & Drake
✨ Bishop and Drake are probably the least acquainted with each other and spend the least amount of time talking.
✨ Drake does have a healthy respect for Bishop though, because he’s helped him out in the infirmary on more then one occasion with a nasty injury.
Bishop & Ferro
✨ Ferro took quite a liking to Bishop when she first met him. Mostly because he reminded her of her younger brother back home who worked as a computer programmer.
✨ She offered to give Bishop a few lessons on flying and maneuvering in a drop shop, as Ferro is the most experienced flyer out of the whole corps.
Bishop & Frost
✨ Bishop and Frost often have long conversations with each other on a range of topics.
✨ Frost finds it fascinating that Bishop is an Android as he hadn’t ever met one until becoming apart of the Colonial Marines.
✨ Likes learning new things from Bishop about what it is to be an Android teaching him in return about his own background and cultural practices his family has passed down.
✨ Loves discussing where he wants to travel on leave, and has asked Bishop to join him on a trip during shore leave after their on LV-426.
Bishop & Gorman
✨ Gorman hasn’t really spent much time with Bishop, apart from when they first met in Aliens.
✨ Generally Gorman doesn’t have an opinion of Bishop one way or the other, he’s just happy that he gets his job done.
Bishop & Hicks
✨ Hicks thinks Bishop is a lot more than just another Android. He treats Bishop almost like a brother, especially after the events of Aliens (1986).
✨ He helped him get back on his feet after the events of Aliens, when he lost his lower half.
✨ Hicks even fashioned a couple of canes to help with Bishop’s mobility issues.
✨ Take Bishop with him on fishing trips back on earth, and birdwatching ventures.
Bishop & Hudson
✨ Often jokes around with Bishop, much like he jokes with everyone.
✨ Have a very sarcastic and snarky relationship where they go back and forth making jokes at each other’s expense.
✨ Weirdly Hudson is the most okay with Bishop being an Arificial Human.
✨ Bluntly asked one time if Bishop had a dick, making the rest of the team groan or facepalm.
✨ Once he found out how good Bishop was with a knife, he’d egg him on to do the knife trick with people at parties and to show new recruits.
Bishop & Spunkmeyer
✨ Is a little creeped out by Bishop because of how close to human he can come sometimes.
✨ Has referred to him as the T1000 on occasion because of his uncanny valley mannerism and way of socializing.
✨ Can be a bit ignorant about Bishop’s status as an Android, but will defend him if anyone picks a fight or is discriminatory towards him.
Bishop & Vasquez
✨ Has a healthy respect for how good Bishop is with a knife and has definitely had a knife throwing competition with him. Loser has to take a shot every time they miss their target.
✨ Doesn’t understand why Bishop has an adversity towards guns and keeps trying to encourage him to let her teach him how to shoot.

Each year we take a close look at the prompts for Sledgefu Week, for those who may be stuck for ideas or not quite sure about what the prompts could entail. Below the readmore are all seven prompts, as well as a short write-up exploring what they mean and some ideas to help get the creative juices going. Enjoy!!
Sickfic
This is a really popular and well-known fanfic trope that I feel probably needs little explanation, but I’ll write a little bit about it anyway! It essentially covers fic where one character is ill and the other cares for them -- it could encompass any kind of illness at all, (including chronic illnesses) and there’s a lot of room to get creative with it. You can go for angst, hurt/comfort, or fluff: it’s just a really good general prompt that I think works nicely to kick the week off!
It suits for Sledgefu pretty well, considering Snafu’s canon mild hypochondria, as well as the fact that Eugene’s dad is a doctor. It could be fun to lean into it: make Eugene play doctor for an actually-sick Snafu, and it could be just as fun to subvert it! There’s really endless options for canon fic: shrapnel wounds turned bad, heat-sickness, seasickness, illness from bad food or bad water or any kind of tropical disease you can think of (malaria is a big one!). You could make one of them (or both) a medic; you could genderswap them and write the gay field nurse fic this fandom sorely needs. And of course if you choose to branch out into modern AU you can begin to think of what might afflict them outside of a war setting: has Eugene been working too much and come down with a cold? Are they hungover, and need mutual care (and lots of takeout)? A lot of the time sickfic focuses on one character doing the comforting and the other character feeling unwell, but there’s nothing to say they can’t both be feeling shitty! I think we say this every year but there’s really no rules at all, you do whatever you feel inspired to do. With Sickfic, just be mindful to tag anything that others might be affected by eg. vomiting, blood, needles, etc.
Tarot
I feel like Tarot is pretty well-known to the Sledgefu fandom, or at least to those who like to write Snafu or his family a little witchy. In case you just have a vague idea of what Tarot actually is and what its purpose or origins are, I’ll explain it as concisely as I can! Tarot decks started life in Europe as playing cards, but eventually began to be used for divination. It’s made up of four suits, or the Minor Arcana, (Wands, Cups, Swords, and Pentacles) as well as a twenty-two card Major Arcana (the imagery of which you’re probably very familiar with). Commonly, tarot decks and tarot reading is used as a means of communicating with the higher self, deities, or with the universe. They can be used as a way to see the future, answer questions, or to give/receive advice. There are different ways of reading them too, depending on how one lays out the cards: I don’t want to make this too wordy, but if you’re curious I encourage you to check out this site to learn more!
For writers, there’s a lot of places this prompt could take you! Probably the most obvious will be fortune teller fic; a classic. Lean into Snafu’s Louisiana roots and have him telling fortunes in the depths of the French Quarter, or go against the grain and have Eugene reading cards and palms and tea leaves as a practice passed down through his family. Or maybe more casual: modern AU Sledgefu flirting through amateur tarot readings with a deck picked up from a junk shop. If you read Tarot and have a connection to it, you can express that through writing! It’s a pretty open-ended prompt, especially if you consider some of the meanings of the cards; you could even write a story inspired by that! The Hermit: Snafu withdrawing, leaving Eugene on the train to spend the next few months in solitude, working through things. The Moon: Snafu and Eugene hitting a rough patch, hiding things from each other. The opportunities really become endless once you start taking the readings of the cards into account! And for visual artists, this must be such a fun prompt: I feel like it’s so a visually rich, whether you’re re-drawing the cards to encompass Snafu and Eugene within them, or making a collage based around some of the things mentioned above: fortune tellers shops, witches cottages, etc.
Trinket
Every Sledgefu Week we tend to have a couple prompts that are a little more open to interpretation, and this year’s ‘Trinket’ is one of those. It might be difficult to try and think of something to base a whole fic or piece of art around, but we really encourage you to let your imagination run wild! There’s already some great trinkets in the show itself: Eugene’s ring, the lighter that Gunny Haney gave him, Snafu’s stolen gold teeth, or their dog tags. Think of small, special objects that you might have: what imbues them with comfort or meaning? What makes you love them? You could have Eugene giving Snafu his ring, or have Eugene musing over war and death and loss while smoking a cigarette lit by his lighter. If you’re into Modern AUs, how could these objects carry through to modern day? Once you start thinking about it, the ideas start rolling in. Feel free to invent special trinkets for them: or maybe trinkets that they hate and want to get rid of, trinkets that remind them of bad times. Trinkets that remind them of each other, or family, or war. So much meaning can be held in the things we own, and I think it’s such a lovely concept to explore!
Crossover
So this prompt was born from the sheer number of suggestions we had for various movie, TV, and book AUs. We didn’t want to put them all to the poll and risk a lot of you feeling disappointed over the one you wanted not being selected, so thought it’d work best to condense them into a ‘Crossover’ prompt so everyone could do whatever they liked. So this is a very very broad one! It would be impossible for me to really go through the prompt and highlight some things that you could do for it, because you can really do anything you want to! Anything! It encompasses movies, video games, TV, books, musicals... if something tells a story, you can do a crossover. So if there’s ever been a film/book/etc. AU you wanted to do for Sledgefu Week but couldn’t quite get it to match the prompts, now is the time!
Vacation
A pretty self explanatory prompt, and one that I think can appeal to people who prefer canonverse and those who like modern AU too! Do you want to send Snafu and Eugene on the holiday of their dreams, or are they gonna be bickering in a gas station over who gets control of the map? Is Snafu gonna drive across a couple states to surprise Eugene by visiting? Is Eugene gonna do the same? There’s a lot of scenarios you can apply to the backdrop of them vacationing, and a lot of emotional journeys you can take them through! And for the canonverse crowd, you have the extra addition of letting them go have fun on an R&R, or taking a road trip post-war, visiting 1950s Paris... you can really do whatever you like!
Historical
This was another prompt like ‘Crossover’ that came from a lot of various suggestions that all boiled down to a similar thing: different historical events or periods. So like Crossover, I won’t linger too long on it (this post is long enough already) except just to say again: do whatever you’re inspired to do! There’s no rules here, you could even take everyone out of the Pacific and put them over in Germany: give them a different experience of war. In fact, you can do that with any war if you wanted to! Wanna do a M*A*S*H AU but made something else for Crossover? You could do it here! Want to put them in the 1920s? You got it. In the 1850s? Yeehaw, they’re cowboys now. 1969, Summer of Love? 1600s, make Snafu a prince? Literally the world is your oyster!
Horror
Past Sledgefu Week prompts have included things that could come under the horror umbrella (Supernatural, for example) but didn’t necessarily have to be made 'horrific’. For the ‘Horror’ prompt this year, we want to see frightening! Disquieting, uncomfortable; creations that either cross over with existing horror franchises, or lean on horrific things you come up with yourself. Horror movies, or TV shows, or books or podcasts or pieces of art all seek to elicit a sense of fear: this can be done by tapping into common phobias, or nightmares, those things which are universally and almost instinctively scary. We want to see things which lean into that, in whatever way you want to do it!
I’m no horror media expert (not by a long shot) but the opportunities for this prompt are really vast simply because horror has so many subgenres to work with. You could go gothic horror; Dracula, Frankenstein, Wuthering Heights (a personal favourite AU -- Eugene soaked out on the moors, searching for Heathcliff-Snafu? Divine). Or you could go to the opposite end of the spectrum: Jennifer’s Body AU, Final Girl AU -- there’s no set way to do horror, in fact you could even bring horror into canonverse if you don’t like AUs. Think the Terror: some unknown beast lurking beyond the borders of their camp on Pavuvu, or Okinawa. Or you could even take the prompt entirely literally and explore the horrors of war and the toll it takes on them both. Please don’t feel stuck into needing to do Scary: horror is about fear and revulsion and dread, and these feelings don’t necessarily need to come from a haunting! (This is also a prompt ripe for monsterfucking, just FYI).
- - - - - - - - - -
So that’s the prompts for this year! They’re all really really great, and have a lot of potential to make some fantastic stuff :~) And to reiterate something I said right at the start, there are no rules here! I think every year we normally get at least one person unsure whether their idea will be okay for the prompt they’d like to make it for, so I just wanna say here: don’t second-guess yourself! As long as it can be linked back to the prompt in some way or another (can literally be the vaguest way possible) you’ll be absolutely fine. We don’t vet submissions at all, especially not for their content relating to the prompts. All we ask is that you remember to stay respectful in what you’re writing, and when the time comes to post it, you tag and warn appropriately :~)
On the subject of writing respectfully, we’d like to just take a moment to link the document on mindful writing re: race and gender that was made last year. Please take a look at it, even if you read it last year! It’s always good to keep these things at the front of your mind, as fandom is a community sport and we want to keep it fun and safe for everyone involved! So thank you if you’ve made it this far through this whole post, check out the doc, and enjoy the rest of the run-up to Sledgefu Week!
#sledgefu#sledgefu week#mod talk#info#if you saw this post before yes you did no you didn't <3 it has the horror prompt on it now lmao

So... Crossover #1: any thoughts?
Anonymous said: You seemed not to think much of Crossover #1 on Twitter. Your full thoughts?
wcwit said: So Cates' Crossover #1, best bad comic of the year or just regular pretentious trash?
An incidental note upfront: What you’re seeing there is the apparently SUPER-RARE SECRET VARIANT COVER I unwittingly picked up at the store - at first glance indistinguishable from the standard cover, the kid getting four-color-fucked by mysterious comic book rays is in fact themselves reading a variant cover of the book, rather than the main cover again in an infinite painting-within-a-painting sort of deal that’s the standard.
So I wasn’t gonna get this: my initial post on the comic and what an obviously awful idea it was back when we only knew half the premise and it was known as Pray The Capes Away actually got some out-of-nowhere traction recently, and I’ve grown rapidly tired of Cates’ Marvel work. Even learning that it was going to be Image’s biggest debut in decades - Jesus fuck, how and why - mostly just made me wish it was Commanders in Crisis getting those kinds of numbers. But Sean Dillon/@deathchrist2000 and Ritesh Babu both got early looks at it and assured me that I, specifically, needed to see the last page, so in I dove. I’ll be posting my reaction to the last page below because I recorded it for their amusement, and below that I’ll talk about said last page. It may surprise you, however, that that wasn’t my main takeaway from the issue.
Let’s accentuate the positive first! This book is gorgeous. Geoff Shaw was terrific back with Thanos Wins, but this is an incredible stylistic level-up aided and abetted by Dee Cunniffe’s colors: it’s rote as hell to say “They mix the elevated and the mundane so well!”, but even beyond the obvious ben-day dots stuff there’s such a tangible sense that the comic book beings don’t belong here, that they’re of higher, misty, platonic stuff and we squishy non-paper-people inevitably crumble and break and bleed in their wake, communicating that big idea so much more powerfully than the actual loads of text on the subject. And if we’re talking good things, I’ll concede it’s possible that there could be subtleties that play out in more interesting ways as it goes on, and that not everything is meant to be taken at face value: a smart friend who actually did like it mentioned being interested in it as clumsy but potentially effective exploration of ‘what if the fun hobby you had inadvertently became contaminated and stigmatized by forces beyond your control?’ In a post-Comicsgate world where we recently ended up inches away from the Superman logo almost certainly becoming a fascist propaganda symbol ala the Punisher skull for at least a generation, that’s a defensible lens to view this book through.
For all Donny Cates’ legitimate talents however, I don’t think an expectation of subtlety is gonna work out with this one.
Okay first off getting into the rest of it the main characters’ name is Ellipsis because “Those three little dots...they can become anything”, so there’s that. More importantly, in the world of this story where comic fans face social oppression after superpeople materialize and fuck up Colorado, they face EVERY KIND OF OPPRESSION: there are clear parallels drawn in here to the violence and harassment faced by people persecuted for their religion, people seeking abortions, queer people, and people of color; this motherfucker even drops a “hates and fears” to let us know comic collecting basically makes you one of the goddamn X-Men. Which in theory could be a purely misjudged allegory rather than stemming from actual, obscenely inflated to the point of disgusting fears of ‘nerd oppression’, except that the book literally opens with a quote from Wertham. If Cates didn’t want to make the message “Hating comics? That’s bad. Like, racism bad”, he utterly, grotesquely failed by inextricably intermingling imagery of real-world bigotry with systemic, deluded fanboy paranoia, at least as of this first issue that’s supposed to meaningfully convey the premise. As a queer dude I think I’m somewhat in my lane to say it’s too blunt and broad and dopey to be particularly offensive, but the co-opting of oppression is what this is rooted in.
The idea of ‘comics good no matter what people think, ain’t it?’ extends to the last traditional local comic store standing in this world: much as superheroes are the primary cause of suffering in this world but the point of the story is still supposed to reveal the beauty in them, part of this is that the comics community isn’t perfect but it sure is great. Which is expressed here via Ellie’s boss Otto, a loveable asshole who yells at people coming in trying to sell the wrong kind of comics to fuck off, but at heart is we’re supposed to understand a good enough dude that the shop he runs is “the only home a lot of (the benighted nerds) have left” (because I guess in this alternate universe the physical stores are still the main hub through which comics fans talk with one another?).
So here’s a story of my very own! That’s me in 2013, it must’ve been some kind of special day because I’m wearing a shirt with a button. I’d at that point only frequented one of what would be my thus far four regular comic shops. The first was a great place, and while to say I had a sense of community there would be overstating it a bit, I was on really good terms with the owner and we regularly chatted when we had the time. When I left for college my store there wasn’t as well-stocked, and for some damn reason all variant covers were double-price, but I got along really well with the owner there too. The third I wasn’t so lucky; the guy regularly behind the desk was never overtly hostile, but clearly wanted to wring my neck every time I asked when a missing comic might get in or if I could update my pull list, and given I’m in the ‘ideal’ demographic for being a comic book store regular and was dropping a solid lump of money there every week, I wonder how others were treated there (the store nearly went under, was saved on the last day of operation by another store that wanted to incorporate it as part of its franchise, then shortly afterwards DID go under and is now I believe a beef jerky place). My current store is fine, I didn’t chat much with the folks behind the counter even before we all had medical incentive to get in and out of places fairly quickly but it almost always has what I’m looking for.
Just because those were my regular stores of course doesn’t mean those are the only ones I’ve ever gone to. About a year before that picture was taken - it’s the closest I could find - when I was 17 my store didn’t have something or another I was looking for, so I head across town to see if another place I had looked up had it. This other place didn’t have what I was looking for either, though I distinctly remember picking up a few issues of Hickman’s FF while I was there since I had foolishly fallen off, hence my remembering the year. I bought a couple issues, but hung around for a bit looking to see if I might grab something else out of a dollar box, setting my comics down. Without realizing it, I’d set my books down on top of another issue, and when I decided I wasn’t getting anything else, I just picked that up along with the rest of the pile and was about to walk out before the owner stopped me. He explained what I had done though assumed it had been deliberate, and because I was a good-hearted little geek I even recall thinking “Well, he’s gonna chew me out, but I guess I deserve it. I’ll try and take this to heart as a learning experience.”
Then he pulled up his shirt a little to show me the gun on his belt. He pointed at the security camera monitors at his desk, and explained to me that if I ever did something like that again, he would have it on tape, and he would pull that gun on me and hold me there while he called the cops.
As it turned out, the comic was free.
The whole thing was so sudden and bizarre and unexpected I didn’t actually freak out until the drive home. It wasn’t until weeks or maybe months later that I managed to tell my dad about the experience, because I *had* nearly stolen a (free) comic and my guilt was mixed in with my nerves and I guess I was somehow too close to register just how disproportionate his response was. It wasn’t until now, nearly a decade later and thinking about it for the first time in a long time as I write this, that I wondered if that might have gone differently - especially living in the midwest - if I hadn’t been a white, squeaky-voiced 17-year-old.
So, minor spoiler, when our cantankerous but well-meaning LCS owner yells to call the cops and grabs and yells at a small kid for pocketing a comic (and later displays fantasy racism towards said kid), I am not filled with nostalgic love for the brotherly safe space that is comic book stores, where this guy while not meant to be seen as perfect is still framed in part as a charming, witty representation of Why We Love These Places, And This Community, And This Genre, And This Medium. Cates is clearly drawing on real time at his local stores, but he equally clearly has a very different takeaway from those experiences than me. And I am, again, in a demographic - white, cis-male, abled, bi but more interested in women, disposable income, a lifelong collector - that the industry and a lot of the guys who sell it to us contort themselves around catering to, even if I had a single very negative experience and later an ongoing low-key uncomfortable one to help disabuse me of any notions of the purity of the dork community. In the world of Crossover as of #1, toxicity is intertwined, deliberately or not on the part of the creators, with what we love on the cosmic and small business scales alike, but at least in the latter case it’s the whole picture that’s beautiful, not any single kernel that needs to be worked on to be dug up.
So underneath is my video reaction to the last page of Crossover #1. Very minor spoilers because I mutter the last two words of the comic to myself, but under the video I discuss said final page and some other scattered thoughts. Whether you read that or not, my takeaway is this: I’m fascinated with wherever the hell this thing is going, I’m glad my dad liked it well enough to want to keep getting it because now I’ll get to see where it heads, but my first impression is that this is at heart meant as cheapass Oscar-bait for people who only read Batman. It’s big and high-concept but also small and intimate! It’s meta and about how great you, the reader are for your consumption, especially the consumption of this! It’s going to be in large part about a forbidden love between a couple divided across impermeable social lines (a couple where they’re a seemingly straight white man and woman, but one likes comics)! Maybe it’ll become Not That, and I’m sure it’ll do at least something interesting along the way because Cates has done good stuff before and there are some inherently interesting big ideas for him to play with here, but for the love of god if you’re thinking about getting this buy Commanders in Crisis too or instead, it’s another new book out of Image about superheroes dealing with the collapse of the multiverse but that one is really fucking good.
So the final page splash reveal is that when the comic book child discovered in here got out of Colorado, which has had an impenetrable energy shield erected around it by one of the heroes for years, she and others were ferried out of there...by Superman, as the narration declares that “This is a story...about hope.” They don’t say the word, but she sketches her savior, Ellie and Otto freak out and go “Is that---” when they see it, and on that last page we see that while a crude drawing it isn’t a rough analogue character, it’s a guy with a cape and trunks with an S on his chest. Surprisingly, I don’t have much to say: it’s just another blunt signifier that superheroes rule and are the best, paired with the most utterly devalued notion as of late of what makes Superman special in ‘hope’. I mean, I’m perversely excited to see whether this is building the entire series on a hook it can never deliver on, or if Cates actually has talked DC into an intercompany crossover; believable given they’ve done a bunch of those over the last several years, and why else would Mark Waid be supervising as ‘story editor’ on this? I guess it’ll shake out one way or another with #6 given Cates has said it “has one of the more epic and — I would argue historic — sequences in comic book history in it.” But I’m far less convinced this is gonna truly go into the meaty question of “What does Superman mean and what makes him unique in this world where superheroes in general are indisputably either failures or monstrous bastards given the scale of destruction their presence has brought about, and he himself failed to stop that?” than as some kind of holy grail of how great superheroes are despite how dang violent they’ve gotten these days for the crew to chase after, whatever additional twist will surely be placed upon it. At least he’s kinda helping an immigrant kid get over a wall, if that’s deliberate?
Random final thoughts:
* If I wrote the opening essay and turned it in in a college course, I would be expelled for plagiarizing Grant Morrison. This is not a joke.
* If mainstream American superhero comics ended January 2017 in this universe, its own last ‘crossover’ was Civil War II, which is hilarious.
* God, please tell me if it takes the dive after all that this isn’t somehow tied into whatever Waid’s Superman project is.
* I wouldn’t normally crap on issues with the finer details of worldbuilding, but A. This is rooted in a nominally ‘real’ world playing by recognizable rules, B. I’m ragging on this anyway so what’s the harm, and C. It’s really obvious. So: Why is one of the racists against the superheroes the guy who loves superheroes so much he’s the last holdout in the entire world still selling comic books about them? How does this modestly-sized shop exist long-term with apparently a significant regular customer base if there are no new comics or even reprints to restock with, ever? Who’s buying the serialized cop/cowboy comics that the U.S. government apparently created pretty much overnight (nobody, it’s just another Wertham dig)?
* The solicit for issue #3 proclaims “Don't miss this one, folks. If you do, it just might drive you...mad.”, so now I fear some kind of Ultra Comics riff.
* “Kids love chains” is the most metal-ass quote of all time and I hate that it’s being wasted as an arc title on this book.
