What’s the significance of each color in Ancient Greece? So green is the only neutral color and it represents mostly natural and earthy things, thank you for telling me that part !! Anyway, as for my Hyacinthus design’s hair being brown, it’s due to the combination of it being a fairly common interpretation of his appearance and also because I find I like how it looks with his skin tone and the purple of his eyes.
Okay, firstly; thank you so much for answering my question too!
Admittedly you can't beat out good, old fashioned colour theory so that's completely fair haha! I still think it's very interesting that brown became the common interpretation of his features so I'm always glad to hear other people's view on it <3
With respect to what colours meant or symbolised in Ancient Greece, it's a super fascinating topic because the Ancient Greeks had a very different perception of colour than how a lot of people - and in this case I'll generalise and say english-speaking people - perceive colour. In a lot of languages, especially older ones, colour wasn't just a way to describe the physical perceptional reality of an observable object (that is, the light reflecting off the object that gives it its perceived hue - the way we perceive colour now) but colour was also used to describe the way in which the people experienced the world. A really good way to think about it is now, if you wanted to distinguish between two types of blue, you would instinctively make a distinction between their shades ("This blue is darker/lighter!") whereas these older people would distinguish based on things in their present, shared world that best matched what they were being asked to describe ("This blue is like the sky/the sea!")
That's an important concept to keep in mind because ancient greek was very unique in that, in addition to this concept of colour being completely intertwined with physical objects (and therefore also acquiring the properties of these objects in the minds of the people), the ancient greeks also did not particularly care about distinguishing between different colour hues (that is, differences in specific individual colour) but rather they were entirely focused on a colour's value - that is, whether it was considered light or dark.
Taking all of this into consideration, the question 'what is the significance of the different colours in Ancient Greece' is a bit of a tricky one to answer because unlike say, Ancient Egyptian which has very clear colours (red, white, green), very clear physical objects that give those colours their property (the desert sand, the sun, people's skin) and very clear symbolic meanings that arose from the natures ascribed to those physical objects due to their influence on the people's lives (hostility, power, new life), Ancient Greece's colours and the perception of those colours was much more abstract and poetic, contingent on their understandings and perceptions of things like light and dark, the sense of touch or taste (sweet and bitter/wet and dry) and what quality was ascribed to the object whose colour is being perceived. Colour was a matter of cosmology, of philosophy and there were many different schools of thought on it from Empedocles' physicalist theories to Anaxagoras' realist theories.
All of this is to say, take the meanings I outlined in this handy-dandy table with a tablespoon of salt! These are based on my understanding of the language used to describe things in classical writings that have survived and my own bias towards Empedocles' physicalist theory of colour and the nature of colour which I also think is very useful for people into greek mythology as a whole due to it making clear links between various gods creating things from mixtures of the four basic elements of nature and the colours that are the result of these mixtures.
I hope this helps even a little and I very much encourage you to do some research into different Greek schools of thought when it comes to colour and the perception of colour as well as how colour affects/reflects the innate nature of all things!
(Also, slight extra note, I left out Kokkinos (scarlet/blood-red) from the table because I didn't really think it was relevant for this outline despite it definitely being an ancient colour. It's a bit difficult to find examples of it with the kind of descriptors Empedocles outlines and I don't want to make assumptions based on third hand knowledge on the greek concept of the nature of things. I'd like to believe it was addressed in more detail in Empedocles' original document - only a fragment of the original some two thousand lines have survived after all - it is confirmed that Empedocles spoke on the recipe for blood and flesh, an equal mixture of all four elements as opposed to bones' four parts fire, two parts earth and two parts water (which is why bones shine white, there's more fire than earth or water) - and I don't want to conject or make assumptions.
I also left out Erythros or basic/primary red according to Plato's list of basic colours because that seemed to have specifically been preferred by Egyptian Greeks according to linguistic data. If I opened up that can of worms with respect to the shared Egyptian-Greek colour language including the way the Greeks like many early peoples did not culturally perceive blue until the invention of Egypt's blue dyes then I would be writing forever and you would never get an actual clear answer about Greek colour symbolism separate and apart from Egyptian cultural influence lmfao. )
A few of the documents that helped me consolidate this information include Sassi's 2022 Philosophical Theories of Colour in Ancient Greek Thought and Ierodiakonou's Empedocles on Colour and Colour Vision. There are also a fair few translations and discussions of the fragments of Empedocles' On Nature still floating about - my copy is a somewhat archaic volume of Leonard's 1908 translation but I never went out searching for updated interpretations and translations of the text since its constantly referenced in perceptional philosophy papers LOL
Anyway, yeah, hope this helps! :D

♡ SYLUS
"Take a picture, it'll last longer", you tease the white haired man who cranes his neck in your direction, bloody eyes examining your attire.
"I might."
A giggle escapes you in response to Sylus. He can't help but let a sly smirk creep up his lips, scanning your black stilettos up to your red lingerie, the polished red gemstones decorating your cleavage, and adding the cherry on top.
You cage wine-red lips between your teeth as you lift your hand to rest on his naked chest, droplets of water indicating his previous shower, your band of rubies slightly slipping down your tender wrist in the process.
Raising his eyebrows at your action, he watches you raise on the tips of your toes, your hot breath fanning across his neck as you whisper into his ear. "I think I'll go change."
Change? Change now, after you dolled yourself up just for him (quickly, for that matter) whilst he took a shower? Definitely not happening.
He manages to take hold of your arm with a questionable look on his face. "Oh, please", he begins, intrigue causing his silver brows to twitch, "The party's already done? What a shame."
The innocent expression on your face only sparked excitement in him- and his pants, a sly smirk exposing his motive as he takes careful steps to your shared bed until he sits on the edge, dark orbs still asserting dominance even though he’s looking up at your captivating form.
You giggle in response, and he doesn't miss your delicate hands gliding down his exposed chest, finding comfort in the towel wrapped around his waist.
"Do tell," he continues, his intense glare roaming over every part of your body, followed by his hands finding comfort on your rear. "What are the stilettos for?"
Pointing his chin towards your hidden surprise, you’re quick to follow up with a swift movement of your leg, pushing him down his back carefully with your heel before seating your covered pusssy on his growing bulge. as you bite back, "to keep you in check."
A glint of amusement dances across the man's features as he scoffs at your pathetic attempt of dominance, giving a firm squeeze to your behind, earning a yelp from your lips. "We’ll see about that."
Before you can even think of a cheeky retort, he smashes his lips against yours in haste, sighing into your mouth as if it's been a lifetime since he last had a taste of you.
His digits creep around your spine to take hold of the back of your neck, swiftly but carefully pushing you on the king sized bed, your back hitting the cold touch of the silken sheets.
He smashes his lips against yours, swallowing your sounds eagerly, hastily fumbling with your lingerie before a loud rip! Sound echoes through the room.
You let out a gasp in realization, ready to scold the man for his animalistic behavior, tragically failing to do so once he teases your exposed space.
“I’ll buy you a new one. Two, even.” He grunts between kisses, digits fumbling to get rid of his towel, grinding your cunt down on his exposed length as if his life depended on it. “Hell, I’ll buy the whole store.”
Within a blink of an eye, you already feel his bulky, fat tip nudging at your puckering hole, pushing past the tight ring of muscle with a low, resonant growl as he swiftly swings your legs over his shoulders.
Whining at his ridiculously bulky head engulfed in your snug hole, you try to close your legs in a desperate attempt to escape the astonishing stretch of his thick length. "Sy, I wanted to- ngh!, W-wanted to be on top."
"Don't be ridiculous, honey", he interrupts before smashing his hips harshly against yours, fully burying his pulsating cock inside your pussy, "You don't mean that", His slender fingers spread your glistering folds apart, in awe at the sight of you swallowing his cock with each push of his hips.
Ecstatic is how to describe your current state, low hanging eyes clouded in the thick mist of pleasure as you watch him ram into you helplessly, your legs danging off his shoulders as he pushes you further and further into a mean mating press.
You can see his tip nudging your lower belly, prominent dent apearing and dissapearing again, causing you to claw at his beefy arm, trying to slow his movement down, only to be smacked away with a scoff.
"Awww, baby. Don't give up just yet. You still got to 'keep me in check', no?" You whine as your orgasm hits you in surprise, letting out a loud cry of his name as your pussy spasms all over his pelvis.
Once you saw that fat grin on his face that you would've loved to slap off his face, you know your fucked. Maybe you even knew that from the start. But,
"There's no backing out now, kitten."
♡ XAVIER
"Can I look?"
"Wait!"
He sighs, impatiently tapping his foot on the floor, trying to adjust to the darkness covering his eyes. How long is this childish game going to take? Why won't you just let him see you?
"C'mon, wanna see you." You chuckle at his whiny plea as you step closer to him, seated on the couch, reaching out to grasp his hand in yours.
"Just be patient. You will." his composer tenses once he feels his fingers grazing the lace material adoring your soft skin and fuck, his dick twitches in his pants in pain as he imagines how you look right now in all of your glory, body decorated in seducing lace. "It's white, you know. Just how you like it."
Strength, that's what he needs—because he doesn't know how much longer he can play this game of yours before he might die.
"You won't die, silly." A hue of red adores his face in embarrassment, groaning at your light chuckle once he realizes he just said that out loud.
In light of the moment, he takes the chance and grasps at the flesh of your ass, causing you to gasp. "Please", he begs, his hand pushing you further towards him until he faces your tummy, "I w-want to- need to see you."
A shudder runs down your spine as he places wet kisses all over your exposed skin, an unoccupied hand cupping a feel of your clothed breast, earning a lustful pur from you in return.
You don't miss the sly smirk spread across his face once you push him deeper into the couch, his back hitting the rest in acceptance of defeat.
"I told you to be-"
"Patient, yes. You know I can't stand waiting when it comes to you, love." You sigh, trying your best to retain your sounds by caging your lips between your teeth, and you're thankful that he can't see your contorting expressions from his shameless hands roaming over every inch of your body. Yet.
"It's rude to interrupt someone while they're talking, you know." Your words come out hollow, not even fully reaching his ear, because all he could focus on were your hands freeing his aching cock from its restraint, his tip slightly nudging at your now exposed pussy, laced panties pushed to the side.
At that moment, his head falls back, a frustrated groan roaring from his lungs, a hard grip on your hips as he rocks your body on top of his, your wet folds adoring his shaft in the glistering essence of your sweet nectar, the warmth of your heat causing him to whine, longing to see and feel the full extent of your addicting pussy.
"Y-you're making it hard for me, you know." He notices the slight waver in your voice, and he also notices your hand gliding along the back of his neck, up, up, up until your finger hooks under the blindfold, giving into his endless pleas.
All he can manage to choke out is a gluttonous "F-fuckkk", as he, finally, sees what you've been holding back from him. And sight behold, it's even better than he could've ever imagined.
You can feel his dick twitching between the mold of your folds once you release the blindfold from his face, letting it dangle down at his neck, slightly pulling him closer by it until your lips were inches apart.
As you admire his pussy-drunk gaze, you notice his glossy eyes, kissing away the dried trail of tears running down his cheeks.
His eyes stay glued between your legs as you halt for a moment to align his angered tip at your excited hole, before you snap him out of his trance by firmly gripping at the blindfold.
"Like what you see?", you tease, words falling onto deaf ears as you sink down onto his length, his hands quick to lift you from his cock before harshly slamming you down again, catching you off guard.
"Fuck yeah."
♡ RAFAYEL
"Oh?"
His voice rings in the thick, clouded air, the filled with lust. With the quick movement of his eyes, scanning every inch of your body and the tight lace hugging your figure so deliciously, he can't help but wet his lips.
"Oh." The man's tone is low, seductive even, his hungry eyes devouring your very being. That's a surprise, alright.
This feels like a dream; with each step you take towards him in the massive pool, his head spins and dizziness overcomes his senses.
The water soon reaches your upper body as you begin to swim towards the man, all under a watchful eye.
In an act of malice, you decide to dive underneath the water, out of sight of his predatory gaze. Or, so you thought.
Gaze, not wavering from your silouette, swimming closer and closer to his spot, amused grimace coming to light as you emerge from the dark water, just to poke your head to the surface.
"Careful now." He warns at your greedy touch against his body, fingers hooking under the waistband of his shorts to mess with him, " What? I'm just testing the waters."
He chuckles at that, arms lifting you as you instinctively wrap your legs around his slutty waist. "The waters you're testing are deep, you know."
You smirk at his words, your arms caging him in place as they lock around his neck, eyes gazing into his, radiating pure lust and desire. "Deeper than you fucking me?"
You've done it now.
A flip switches inside him instantly, breath turning ragged while his hands are busy freeing his aching cock, impatiently, ripping your adored bikini, exposing your cunt to the cold pool water.
You protest, whining as he holds the pair of panties up in victory, examining them while balancing you on one strong arm. "Couldn't see shit from afar", he begins, his tongue poking out to lick across his lips.
"Looks wonderful on you, baby. Heavenly, even. But right now, I'd rather see you," releasing the fabric that covered your tits in rapid motion, he throws them behind him without care before resuming, "-naked."
"Sorry, you were saying?", His brought-up innocence, causes your brows to knit in frustration, soon disappearing once he bullies his entire cock deep into you. "Oh yeah, I remember. Something about me fucking you, right?"
The wail that you let out only earns you a twitch of his pulsating cock inside your comforting heat, repeated thrusts of his causing the water to shudder from his crude movements.
Nodding hastily, your nails clamp down on his shoulders - trying to adjust to his rapid movement with your body bouncing up and down up and-
"Hellooo, anyone up there?"
If you could, you would wipe that snarky smirk right off his face, but you couldn't. You couldn't even protest as his hands followed up to your head right after, a light knock against your forehead with his index finger.
"Hm? My girl's turning all dumb when she wanna come, yeah?" Strong arms trap you in a strong hold, his hips rutting into you at a ridiculously fast pace, his hands spreading your ass cheeks apart, nudging your gushy spot repeatedly as you threaten to come undone in his hold.
"Tell me, baby. Tell me you wanna cum, wanna hear my girl say it." he mumbles against your kiss-bitten lips, a slight stutter escaping him at the delicious squeeze of your cock-drunk pussy. "M-hm, 'm so close, soso- oh nghhh!"
Displeased with your answer, he clicks his tongue, his slender fingers threading their way between your legs to squeeze your clit meanly between his fingers. "O-ohhww! Hnghh!"
"Nuh uhhh. Say it and you'll get to cum, silly girl." You spill whine after whine from your lips, legs shaking in sync with the water. "W-wanna cum, need ta' nghhh pleaseee- Oh!"
Incoherent nonsense rushes past your lips, and before you even realize it, you're coming undone in his arms.
Silent cries of his name fly over his head, his whole attention focused on you. From your widened eyes to your mouth hanging open, all the way to the squeeze of your plush walls, begging him to fill you to the brim.
And he does.
At his wits end, his hips stutter into yours with one last pathetic thrust. Fat chunks of white spurted into you, followed by a broken wail from him. "Y-yeahh that's my girl. Take it all. That'sss it."
You crash your lips on his, moans drowning in the hot mess. With your head laid against his heaving chest, eyes scrunched together as you came down from your high.
"C'mon, baby", he snaps you out of your daze, hazy eyes gawking at you. And, oh - you know this look all too well.
Biting your lips in excitement, he hoists you up until his dick slips out of you in quick motion, a slight hiss from him indicating his impatience.
The cold breeze engulfs your bodies as you leave the pool, your arms clinging to his neck in seek of warmth. With his quick feet, he hurries to reach the inside.
"You know we ain't done yet."
♡ ZAYNE
"You should've told me," His breath hitches against your neck, pampering your neck with kisses, hands groping your flesh. "I would've, w-would've got off earlier."
"Where'd be the fun in that?" you tease, trying to hide your smirk, your fingers delicately brushing through his dark strands, and fuck, you could cum by just looking at his lustful expression.
His hair messy and face lost in complete bliss, with his eyes screaming that he's hungry for more. And who could blame him?
Exactly, no one.
"Fuckin' hell", he mutters under his breath as you climb on top of him, laced panties hovering just above his face.
Hell, he'll for sure just might end up there if he doesn't get a taste of you in the next three seconds.
"What are you waiting for, darling?", His fingers dig deep into the flesh of your hips, forcing your hips further down, and he can't believe his eyes. Your juices bleed through the dark lace. You little minx.
Three.
He stops in his tracks at the faint whiff of your juices hitting his nostrils, squeezing your hips so tight that your flesh spills from the gaps of his fingers.
Two.
"Well?", you snap him out of his trance, catching his gaze. Your fingers brush through his strands before firmly gripping them, his lips mere inches away from your leaking hole, "What are you waiting for?"
Fuck that last second.
Shameless and dirty. Two words you'd never expected tohear with your Zayne in a sentence.
It's downright nasty, how his tongue is lapping and sucking your lips through the fabric, teeth teasingly grazing against your clit earning a gasp from you.
"Pull it off, can't wait. I gotta taste you." Zayne is fast, fingers hooking under the fabric to reveal your glistering cunt with a hungry growl, "All of you."
"S-so impatient." Shaky voice betraying yourself as your fingers tangle in his dark roots, offering him the dark blue lace that does a poor job of covering your crotch, thighs twitching in his hold.
"Please, darling", wavering voice whispers against your hidden folds, your sweet nectar reaching his nose once he hooks his finger under the flimsy fabric, pushing it to the side to gawk at your exposed cunt, glistering.
He breathes in, heart rapidly beating in his chest in anticipation, before he stops himself with one deep, threatening growl. "Fuckin' sit."
With that, he firmly grips your hips, smashing you down on his awaiting mouth. The gasp that leaves you only eggs him on, making out with your lips as if it were his last meal.
And it might be, if he continues to push you down further and further, his tongue already pushing past your tight walls, eager to taste more of you.
Humming into your heat as he gazes up at your contorted expressions, the plush of your thighs nearly suffocating him. Not that he’d mind, of course.
„Mhm, take it.“ His words are muffled against your puffy folds, barely reaching your ears. If you even heard him over the squelching sound of the wet mess beneath you, that is.
Big, beefy hands take a firm hold on your ass, squeezing the flesh tightly in his embrace. Groaning into your heat, he musters up his strength to rock your cunt over his face, ears perking up at your increase in volume.
You feel hot blood rushing through your veins as each breath of air gets heavier and hotter by any minute, his tongue lavishly exploring your tight tunnel.
His keen movement yearns for your release, growing more desperate in his movements. He just can't help himself, really. "Quit, squirmin', " He just barely lifts your hips, his words scrambling against your heat before he resumes to his meal, slightly biting down onto your poor clit in warning.
Your surprised squeal only eggs him on further. Mouth working faster, nastier, downright making out with your cunt shamelessly, even going as far as spelling his name over and over again.
Z-A-Y-N-E-Z-A-Y-N-E-Z-
„I‘m s-so- close! Fuck!“ As those words leave your mouth, a sudden euphoric wave overtakes you, and you gush all over the man's face, his face shining in your juices as he eagerly slurps up every bit you offer him.
Humming in content, his hand rips against the flesh of your ass, faint paint of red adoring your behind, before his strong arms swiftly throw you onto your back, leaving you in pure bliss from your orgasm.
But before you can notice the switch in position, his mouth is back on your cunt, hands now roaming over your body, making sure to trace the adorable cerulean lace, even going as far as sneaking through your bra to get a feel of your soft chest.
This is so strange, so unlike him- Zayne, the usually chill and composed man, full of self-control and diligence, now rutting his hips against the bed in impatient thrusts, all kinds of mumbles and groans lost between your spread thighs.
"'S too much, just hold on, Zayne!"
The overstimulation catching up to you, a string of electricity running down your spine as you try to escape his firm grip by wiggling, thighs squeezing tightly around his head - anything. But just from his warning glare, you knew it was impossible.
Sure, your legs are just about to give out on you, your poor, abused pussy pulsated non-stop, and you could already see the shining stars threatening to litter your vision.
It's too much, but it also feels all too good, maybe a little too well. With trembling fingers, you reach for his hair, contemplating whether to push him away or pull him impossibly closer. Now it was up to him to choose.
Zayne's resonated voice is already answer enough, face lifting from the cavity of your fluttering heat. His mouth completely covered in your slick, his grin completely catching you off guard.
He's placing a last, sloppy kiss right at the crown of your clit for good measure. Heavy breath brushing against your abandoned clit, causing a shiver to creep up your spine, before he's leaving a trace of wet kisses up your belly, eyes not leaving yours even once.
"You know I can't do that, darling. I'm not even halfway done with you yet."

hug me, not it!
contents ౨ৎ ⋆ s. todoroki x gn reader ⭑ your boyfriend has hidden beef with your plushies.
shoto beadily eyes the intruding beasts behind you with distaste subtly written over his pretty features.
the “intruding beasts” being your plushies neatly lined up against the wall of your dorm.
did he buy most of them for you with his father’s credit card whenever the two of you went on dates? yes.
does that mean he was any happier to see them in his presence? no.
they already get the privilege to sleep with you every night. how dare they gatecrash on the both of your precious private time like this? uninvited too?
it’s silly, he knows, but he always gets the tiniest bit jealous when he comes to your room for study sessions or sleepovers, even movie nights.
only to see you cuddling with that damn rilakkuma bear plush he gave you last year to celebrate your anniversary in your lap. for the millionth time. in his spot.
shoto can’t help but feel a little replaced.
he throws one last glance over your shoulder at the offending sacks of fluff, before his soft strawberries and créme hair brushes your chin as he nuzzles deeper into the crook of your neck.
“sho!” you giggle. “that tickles.”
you feel a faint smile against your collarbone. just the slightest bit mischievous enough for you to be able to tell, as he lets out that quiet, melodic laugh of his. “sorry.”
he’s not really, though. shoto peeks back over at your plushies, the barest hint of smugness visible on his lips.
mine. shoto thinks while looking at them, arms circling your waist.
unaware of the one-sided competition for your affections behind you, you’re deadset on a mission for revenge.
gently, you brush the tips of your fingers along his neck.
shoto’s ridiculously handsome as he leans into your touch with a curious tilt of his head.
“what are you doing?”
his bangs fall into his eyes as he questions you, and you feel your heart skip a beat, wondering how he’s even real.
“trying to tickle you back!” you desperately attempt to do so again under his arms and on his thigh.
other than a blink from him, still no reaction.
“love.”
you don’t seem to hear him.
“shoto, lie on your tummy.”
he complies easily, always one to humor your bouts of inquisitiveness. whenever you were focused on something, you tended to tune everything else out.
shoto stretches out on your bed with his tall frame not unlike a cat. but his head is still turned back to you, staring at you to try and to get your attention.
“love.” you’re trying to tickle the back of his knee now, to no avail.
finally, you raise your head to look at him. “yeah?”
“i’m not ticklish.” shoto deadpans.
“what, really?” you whine, stopping your attack on his leg. “not even as a baby?”
“no.” amusement dances in his gemstone eyes as he studies you. “touya always got mad when he tried to, because it never worked.”
you stifle a giggle behind your hand. “what did you do to make him tickle you in the first place?”
“exist,” your boyfriend says so simply that you have to let out a laugh.
you reach out to cup the side of his cheek, and there’s a soft intake of breath from him as his lashes flutter shut.
shoto wonders how your gentle touch always makes him feel warm all over, when he’s certain he’s not even using his quirk.
it’s strange. in good way.
“why do you like cuddling those plushies so much?” he murmurs, eyes still closed.
a flustered expression that he can’t see spreads across your face.
“um, i guess it’s ’cause they smell like you and at night it helps me sleep?”
“oh.” his eyes blink open in surprise at that, warmth starting to grow on his cheeks.
shoto takes in the sheepish grin you’re wearing, and reaches out to cup your burning cheek similarly like how you did with his moments before.
you shiver into his sweet and soft touch, and the side of his lips quirk up.
“you can cuddle them. but when i’m here, the only one that should be in your arms is me.”

tender love and care.
sylus x (non mc)fem.reader
because you were labeled as sylus’s woman while here at the n109 zone, you were given several special privileges that made you just as powerful (if not, than more so) as sylus solely because you had such a man wrapped around your fingers.
you recall the date that marked your three month anniversary with him, where sylus gifted you a ruby, teardrop necklace with a matching ring as he told you the significance of his gift immediately,
“each time you walk out to explore the city and head out to work when i’m not around, these rubies will be a reminder to others that you are mine. that you’re under my constant protection, and should anyone dare to disturb your life, i’ll be there to teach them a lesson they shall never forget.”
even the memory of the passion in his voice, coupled along with the way he playfully bites down on your ring finger was enough to make you shiver in response.
the fact that you held his heart within the palm of your very hands filled you with a sense of unbidden joy, where you wanted to do nothing more than to litter his face with gentle butterfly kisses and shower him with the type of unconditional love he had been missing from his entire life.
and you had been with him ever since, never once regretting your decision to remain by his side.
currently, due to certain circumstances at work where several people had called out sick, you were forced to work a double shift. you did your best to cover for your missing coworkers as your supervisor gave you a grateful expression. once your shift ended later that evening, he allows you to take the rest of the week off as a thank you for all your hard work. despite the exhaustion you felt, you couldn’t ignore the undeniable happiness that courses through your veins.
as you step out of your workplace, you were immediately greeted by sylus. he was parked directly in front of your workplace building while leaning against his motorcycle. a grumpy expression was seen on his face, painting his handsome features in a scowl as the sight of it all made you giggle in response. all too eager to see him, you stop directly in front of him and allow his arms to automatically encircle around your form.
“i should kill that boss of yours for making you take over.” he growls into your ear, clearly upset. you tighten your arms around him in hopes of calming him down when you admit to him, “hey, there’s no need to be so grumpy. in fact, my boss was kind enough to give me the rest of the week off thanks to my hard work.”
upon hearing your words, sylus visibly relaxes, pressing a kiss against your lips before tossing you your helmet. it was specially designed in your favorite color, and you couldn’t help but smile at it for a moment as you held your helmet within your hands. sylus ends up donning his helmet first before getting on his bike, turning back to narrow his eyes at you, silently gesturing at you to get on.
with a playful roll of your eyes, you wear your helmet and get on behind sylus, wrapping your arms around his front. he places his hands over your folded arms, giving it a brief squeeze before revving up the bike and making its descent out into the city. knowing that he chose to take the scenic route back home, you take a moment to admire how brightly the city lights shone like gemstones beneath the moonlight. giggles were heard escaping from your parted lips, and oddly enough, sylus was able to hear the sounds of your laughter as he briefly gives your arm another squeeze with one hand before navigating expertly across the streets.
quite some time passes before you and sylus return to your shared penthouse apartment. he parks in his usual spot before taking off his and your respective helmets, holding them both in one hand while interlocking his fingertips with yours in the other. despite how you had been with him for close to two years now, your feelings never once went stale for him. you were just as in love and enamored with him as the first day, the day when you had just met him.
while riding the elevator with him to the top floor, you cuddled your body closer to his shoulder, earning a knowing smirk from him as he gives your hands a gentle squeeze in response. when you both finally reach the top floor, you watch sylus as he takes long strides toward the penthouse all while unlocking it with his key.
the moment you enter your shared home. you were immediately hit with the mouth watering scent of your favorite takeout, seeing it all spread out on the coffee table. you were so happy to enjoy all of your favorite foods with sylus that you couldn’t help but lean in to give him a chaste kiss.
“you’re spoiling me, my grumpy crow.” you tell him while framing at his face.
he scoffs before taking your hand, gently biting down against it with his crimson eyes twinkling with mischief and love for you, “anything for you, darling.”
sylus gestures at you to enjoy the meal first, moving to the side to place his keys on the counter along with storing your helmets. with your stomach growling, you take a box and dig in with your fork while settled on the couch, moaning at how delicious everything tasted. a few minutes later, sylus returns back to you with his arms crossed, clearly amused at the way you kept stuffing your face.
“how cute.” he hums before catching you off guard, choosing to pick you up from the couch as he settles you on his lap. your cheeks were felt heating up in response, yet still, you were comfortable enough to cuddle yourself even closer to his chest while continuing to eat.
you both enjoyed the rest of your late dinner, with you spoiling sylus by feeding him bites of your food and vice versa with him as well. by the time you finished your meal, you felt so full that you could barely move, choosing to land against him when sylus places the empty boxes and utensils on the table.
“what’s this? has my princess had her fill?” you cough at how suggestive he sounded, hiding your face within his shoulder as you playfully bit down against it. a low groan was heard coming from him, and you let out a soft, victorious laugh while telling him, “sy, i’m too tired and full to move… can you carry me?”
he feigns annoyance with a huff of your name, but doesn’t deny you of your wishes (he never could deny you). with a grunt, he stands back to his full height while carrying you in his arms, bridal style. you end up giggling profusely at the sensation, burying your head within his shoulder as he leads you to your shared bedroom and opens the door to the master bathroom.
setting you against the counter, sylus helps with taking off your clothes, leaving you bare for him as he does the same. you were given a moment to admire his delicious body, eyes tracing at the muscles that decorate the entirety of his godlike body. he sees your hungry stare and smirks before taking you in his arms once more. he begins to hum an unfamiliar turn, but you bask in this uncharacteristic softness exuding from the leader of onychinus (a side he only saves for you).
while keeping you in his embrace, he fills his luxurious, porcelain tub with warm water, adding your favorite scented bubbles within it before entering it with you. with his back settled against the tub, your own back was pressed against the front of his chest. you let out a soft moan upon feeling the hot waters surrounding you. the sensation of it coupled with the way sylus’s large hands began massaging at your shoulders was enough to make you practically melt against him.
you were dimly aware of his rich chuckles against your ear, dozing off against his gorgeous body. sylus works on washing your form while lathering your hair with shampoo, the sensation of it all earning a series of soft purrs from you.
“heh, is my kitten satisfied?”
you merely let out a hum in response, moving your head to the side as you allowed sylus to give the newly revealed skin of your neck a series of reverent kisses. once he was satisfied with cleaning you, rinsing your body free of any soap suds, he gets out of the bathtub while still holding you within his embrace.
never once does he leave your side. from drying your body with a plush towel, to helping you get into your sleeping clothes, sylus takes spoiling you with care to the next level. and by the time he reaches your shared bedroom while placing you in bed, you were already half asleep.
as you lay beneath the covers, body curled as you remained cuddled to him, sylus takes a moment to admire you. his long fingertips were felt brushing through your damp hair as he manages to capture a wet strand within his grasp, leaning forward to press a lingering kiss against it.
“i bet you have no idea what you do to me…” his gruff whisper was directed toward you, but it was clear that you were so deep in your slumber that you didn’t hear him. with a huff of your name, sylus reaches over his nightstand to pull out a tiny, velvet box. upon opening it, it would be revealed to contain your dream engagement ring.
as his gaze focuses on you, he takes a hold of your left hand with a hum, sliding the ring against your left ring finger before admiring it. a smirk paints his handsome expression when he leans closer to press a kiss against your ring.
“once you awaken… then you’ll know that my promises of forever has always been true and not simply a play on words. i hope you’re prepared to be mine, my darling love.”
and despite how you were in a deep sleep, sylus could have sworn he saw you smiling in response to his fervent promises of forever.
a.n. - don’t mind me, this is just a self indulgent mess that i need in my life. i love sylus so much;;; i need him so badly 😭

It's Zircon Time!
(If you are the same age as me you may well have read that like you were a Power Ranger saying "It's Morphin' Time" and you wouldn't be incorrect because we're going to talk about how zircon slowly degrades from crystalline to amorphous structure over millions of years... so...)
I'm excited to tell you about gem-quality zircon!
@theproblemwithstardust I have no idea if you're still interested but heads up I got carried away I think I wrote over 3k words about this you may need snacks and an interval
Zircon & Double Refraction
Zircon is a naturally occurring gem mineral, chemical formula zirconium silicate and crystallising in the tetragonal system. It is a uniaxial optically anisotropic gemstone (remember, optically anisotropic means light is split into two when passing through the crystal) and in its rough form occurs as elongate to squad tetrahedral crystal with bipyramidal terminations.
(What does that mean? It means it's a rectangle with two triangles at the ends, and the rectangular section might be long or short!)
Even as a rough crystal zircon will show some of the features it is well known for - such as its sub-adamantine lustre (meaning the near-diamond-like brightness of surface reflection of white light) and (if the crystal is transparent enough) a high birefringence value means internal features are viewed as doubled.
Woah... you just chucked a LOAD of science terms at me! What does any of it mean?
Let me tell you about double refraction in zircon! I'm so excited by it!
I'll break these terms down one at a time:-
Refraction - the bending of light as it passes through the crystal
Double refraction - two rays of light get bent at slightly different angles! (Remember that as an optically anisotropic material, zircon splits light into two rays)
Birefringence - the difference in the amount the two rays of light are bent by
You know how when you stick a straw in a glass of water, it looks as though it is slightly bent? That's refraction at play! When light passes between two mediums of different optical densities (for example from air into water, or air into a gemstone) the light is bent. The angle is it bent by is related to the substance it passes through. We use refraction in gemmology to identify gemstones, because every stone refracts (bends) light by a different amount.
In an optically anisotropic gemstone the two rays of light are both bent by different amounts. We can measure how much each ray of light is bent by, and the difference between them, to help identify them!
Fun fact, the 2 rays of light are referred to as the ordinary ray and the extraordinary ray - that is important for identifying stones by their RI but I'm getting off topic for zircon!
The important thing in zircon is that it has Very High Birefringence. That means that the two rays of light are bent by so much that when they leave the gemstone and reach the viewer (that's you!) you see a doubled image of whatever is inside the stone - double vision!
(If like me you wear glasses, it feels like looking at the gemstone without your glasses on - everything just sliiightly out of focus...)
If a zircon has inclusions, each of these will appear to be doubled when viewed through the crystal. Even easier to spot, and present even in an inclusion-free stone, is the doubling of the back facets of the gemstone! That's right, when you look through the stone at the pattern of facets on the other side, they will appear to be doubled.
Haang on a sec - what about the Optic Axis, I hear you ask?
An Optic Axis is a direction in an optically anisotropic gemstone in which light behaves as though it is passing through an optically isotropic material. That's a material where light travels as a single ray rather than splitting into two - so when viewed from the right angle, a zircon crystal will let light pass through as a single ray, and you won't see any double refraction at all!
Fun fact! In a uniaxial crystal, there is one optic axis and it is always parallel to the c-axis (the long dimension of the crystal).
This is all pretty neat, right? If you want your colourless zircon crystal to pass as a diamond imitation, it should be cut with the table perpendicular to the c-axis. That way, when you look straight down at the top of the stone, you won't see any of that dizzying eye-visible double-refraction - diamonds are optically isotropic, so they only ever transmit a single ray of light :)
(I mean there are tons of other ways to differentiate diamond and zircon, but at a glance, it would make for a better imitation...)
Metamict Zircon
Wouldn't it be great if zircon were always so easily identifiable in part due to its high birefringence? Not a lot of stones that have eye or loupe visible birefringence - most of them are much smaller values (ie. the difference in the angle the two rays of light are bent at is much smaller)
Sad news for you friends, but zircon does not always stay in this nicely ordered highly crystalline state, behaving as a tetragonal optically anisotropic crystal should.
You see, the thing that gives zircon it's colour is Uranium. That's right, radioactive uranium!
And even when it is only present as a few ppm (parts per million) in the zircon structure, the radiation emitted by those atoms is enough to start breaking through the bonds between other atoms in the zirconium silicate structure, and slowly but surely the structure of zircon is transformed from highly organised crystalline bonds, to irregular and disorganised amorphous atomic arrangement.
Why am I talking about this off the back of birefringence values?
Because amorphous materials are optically isotropic - that is, light behaves the same in all directions. No more double refraction!
(In case you haven't noticed yet you are actually taking a stroll through the gemmology section of my mind and encountering Related Thoughts in the exact order in which they are stacked and catalogued in my Mental Shelves, I hope you are keeping up but hit me up in the comments or reblogs if you need me to circle back to anything?)
But! I hear you cry - if you identify zircon by it's birefringence, how do you tell it's zircon when it's altering to an amorphous state?
When zircon becomes amorphous - also known as becoming metamict, it doesn't suddenly change all at once. There will be areas of crystalline structure interspersed with amorphous areas. When viewed with a 10x loupe, this gives the stone a hazy or grainy internal appearance. Although many gemstones show various types of zoning, the hazy zoning associated with metamict zircon is quite distinctive.
The colour of zircon also changes during this breakdown of the crystal structure, becoming a greenish colour instead of the usual browns, reds, yellows.
Heated zircon can be colourless or even bright blue - I kinda assume they would follow the same path when becoming metamict but can't say for sure! That said, I know from my own experimentation that heated blue zircon goes a murky grey-brown on exposure to UV, so perhaps it really is all the same process :)
Diagnostic Absorption Spectra in Zircon
What if the zircon is completely metamict? What if there is no birefringence at all, and you can't be certain that the haziness inside the stone is identifiable as hazy zoning?
Well, don't forget that a lot of gemmological identification involves combining different observations and test results - it's very rare to be able to do a single test and say "THIS. It's definitely THIS."
That said... there is a test we can do on zircon which provides a diagnostic result, even in the absence of all other tests!
We can check the Absorption Spectrum!
Holllllld up... better go over what we mean by Absorption Spectra.
When white light passes through a gemstone, it is modified via absorption...
Wait, go back a bit further.
White light is actually made up of light of all coloured wavelengths from 400nm (violet) to 700nm (red) - this is called the 'visible light spectrum' as these are the wavelengths the human eye can detect!
When all colours of light at once reach the human eye, the mind interprets it as 'white' light.
When the colour is modified because one or more wavelengths are removed, we then start to perceive colour.
For example, when light passes into a corundum crystal coloured by chromium, most violet, some blue, and all green and yellow and some orange light is absorbed. The resulting colour you see, made up from transmitted red and a little blue light, is red!
By the way, the absorption I just described is for ruby! :)
BACK TO ZIRCON!
The uranium in zircon causes a unique absorption which can be viewed with a spectroscope. Many gemstones, even colourless ones, show various absorption spectra. Relatively few show a diagnostic absorption spectra, which has a pattern of absorption unique to that gem species and colouring element. Although you should always back up your gemstone identifications with multiple pieces of evidence, with a diagnostic feature you can make a positive identification of gem species even in the absence of other information.
So what does zircon's diagnostic absorption spectrum look like?
Well, that can vary depending on whether it is high (crystalline) zircon or low (metamict) zircon, and whether it has been heat-treated to alter it's colour!
The defining feature in all types of zircon is a diagnostic absorption line at 653nm (about half-way along the red area of the spectrum).
In heat-treated colourless or blue zircon, this may be the only absorption line present.
In other zircons, as well as the 653nm line, you will see up to 40 other absorption lines or bands scattered throughout the spectrum.
(Oh backtrack a moment again! When viewing the absorption spectra, the black lines are the wavelengths that are being absorbed :) Please do remind me to tell you this stuff, I forget because I Thought It Was Obvious (as Tech would say) but I'm doing my best to cover the basic science as well as gemmology here)
Metamict zircon still shows a diagnostic absorption spectra, including the line at 653nm. However, many of the absorption lines and bands have become distinctly fuzzy-looking - this is another helpful piece of evidence to determine whether you are looking at high zircon or metamict zircon.
(Still here, team? I have been writing for 2 hours and we're 1700 words deep, so take a break if you need it, hydrate or diedrate... save this post for later... close the tab and back slowly away from the screen because you didn't realise you were getting into all this when you clicked below the read-more...)
Toughness and Dispersion
Other features of zircon that are important when considering its use as a gemstone are it's relatively high hardness, but low toughness.
Hardness and toughness? Aren't they the same thing?
No :D
Hardness (in gemmological terms) relates to the ability of a material to resist being scratched when the sharp point of another material is dragged across the surface. Zircon has a Moh's Relative Hardness rating of 8/10 - that's pretty good resistance to being scratched!
However, it has Low toughness. Toughness relates to the ability of a material to resist being fractured or cleaved as a result of physical impact. In short, zircon chips easily. When faceted as a gemstone, it tends to chip along the sharp edges between the facets, accumulating numerous small fractures which are described cumulatively as 'nibbled facet edges'.
Remember when I said there were numerous other ways to tell the difference between diamond and zircon? This is one of them! You would not expect to see wear like this to a diamond - however, unless your zircon has been very well cared for, you would expect the facet edges to show a certain amount of abrasion due to its low toughness... and yes, if you view those chips through the crystal, they will appear to be doubled due to the high birefringence :)
Other features of zircon include a high Dispersion Index.
Dispersion is the splitting of white light into its spectral wavelengths when passing through two inclined surfaces of a transparent material (think the Pink Floyd Dark Side of the Moon prism splitting the single ray of white light into the rainbow!)
Guess what? When you facet a gemstone, it almost always has two inclined surfaces of transparent material! In gemstones with a high Dispersion Index, you will see more dispersion - that is, when you tilt them, you will see more flashes of coloured light (blue, green, red) sparkling back at you from the facets than a gemstone with a low dispersion index.
You can see dispersion even in gemstones with a body colour - they don't have to be colourless to see it! That said, it can be harder to spot some of those dispersed colours against the body colour - so this feature may be more prominent in colourless or light coloured zircons than in deeper colour samples.
Aaaaaaaand I think that's it? At least, I think that's everything I wanted to cover with you about gem-quality zircon today!
BUT WAIT!
The fun's not over :P
I'm pretty sure I promised a comparison between naturally occurring zircon, and common artificial material cubic zirconia!
(Just when you thought you were free...)
Natural vs. Artificial
Zircon is a naturally occurring, crystalline, inorganic mineral formed by natural processes. Don't forget, the chemical formula is Zirconium Silicate and it crystallises in the tetragonal system.
Cubic Zirconia (shortened to CZ) is an artificial crystalline material grown by man. The chemical formula is Zirconium Oxide and it crystallises in the cubic system.
Notice how I say artificial, not synthetic? That's an important distinction.
Synthetic materials have a direct comparison in nature. All synthetic gemstones are artificially grown, but not all artificial materials are considered synthetic.
To be classified as a synthetic gemstone, the result of the artificial growth process must be chemically, physically and optically identical to the naturally occurring mineral.
Cubic Zirconia has no natural counterpart. It is completely artificially created. Hence, it can be referred to as artificial or as a simulant (meaning it is simulating/imitating another natural material).
Cubic Zirconia
CZ is grown via the incredibly metal sounding process of SKULL MELTING
Fun fact! CZ has a higher melting point than any material you could make a crucible of to melt it in. So when we make it, we have to melt it inside a skin, or 'skull', of solid CZ, with a liquid inside. We can go into the science another time if you like, but the quick version is it's like heating up lasagne in the microwave, and the middle gets hot whilst the edges are still cold... that's how we melt the centre of the CZ mix whilst keeping in in a cooled skull of its own solid material :)
Above a certain temperature (I want to say off the top of my head with a melting point in excess of 2600 degrees Celsius), zirconium oxide adopts a cubic arrangement - nice and symmetrical, and optically isotropic (light moves as a single ray and behaves the same in all directions). However below temperatures of around 2000 degrees Celsius, zirconium oxide would crystallise in the monoclinic system. Woaaah! That's not terribly symmetrical! We want it to be cubic zirconia, the same in all directions.
To stop the zirconium oxide mix from changing to a monoclinic arrangement as it cools, we need to introduce a stabilising element. Most often this is a rare earth element such as yttrium, which bonds with the zirconium oxide structure and forces it to retain its cubic arrangement even at lower temperatures. Cool, right?
(ahaha I didn't mean to make that joke... cool... cos we're cooling the mixture... it's late and I've been typing for a long time now I hope you're still with me...)
Fun fact, due to it's super high melting point, you actually need to start the melting and recrystallisation process by inserting a thin wafer of pure zirconium into the ingredient mix inside the Skull. This can then be melted, which will then oxidise, and start a chain reaction of melting and bonding with the surrounding material :)
CZ Optical Behaviours
CZ is cubic, meaning it is optically isotropic, so you will only have single refraction (a single ray of light transmitted) no matter which direction you view the stone in.
This is enough to differentiate it from zircon, which is optically anisotropic with high birefringence, but what about diamond, the gemstone that CZ so frequently imitates?
Don't worry - we can again look at features such as the absorption spectra, and hardness/toughness as well as lustre to tell the difference.
The lustre (surface reflection of white light) of CZ is lower than that of diamond (adamantine) or zircon (sub-adamantine). I want to say CZ is bright vitreous (bright glasslike)? So with practice you will learn when the surface reflection just doesn't seem quite bright enough to be diamond...
(It's bothering me that I skipped the formal lustre definition earlier so here it is now: lustre is the quality and quantity of white light returned via reflection from the surface of the gem material towards the viewer)
CZ has a really high dispersion index - that's the splitting of white light into its spectral colours, remember, the coloured sparkles you see when you move the stone! CZ has a dispersion index even higher than diamond, so if the stone seems to be returning too many sparkles of colour... it's probably too good to be true.
CZ also grows free of inclusions, and the absence of internal features is a huge warning sign that you're looking at an imitation rather than a diamond!
As well as these optical features, CZ will also show surface features to differentiate it from zircon or diamond. The facet edges even in well-cut stones are typically rounded and soft, and although they don't tend to accumulate the 'nibbled' look of chipped zircon, the facets can be scratched - typically picking up a 'frosted' look if they are particularly heavily worn.
Remember when I mentioned using yttrium or a similar element to force the zirconium oxide mix to retain it's cubic structure? That's what causes the absorption spectra in CZ!
CZ shows a REE (rare earth element) spectra. It's not diagnostic like a zircon spectra is, but it is highly characteristic. Both coloured CZ and colourless can show it - REE spectra typically manifest as clusters of many fine absorption lines mostly distributed in the yellow-green area of the spectrum.
Iiiiiii think I might actually be done now (except the zircon vs CZ comparison strayed into grounds of differences between diamond and its common simulants so I'm trying not to get doubly triply side-tracked into synthetic moissanite which is ALSO doubly refractive with loupe-visible doubling of internal features due to high birefringence and only gets to old the term 'synthetic' on a technicality because naturally it is almost impossible to find gem-quality moissanite outside of rare meteoric impact events...)
(Guess what synthetic moissanite is silicon carbide crystallising in the hexagonal system and is created by a process known as sublimation - where a material goes from solid to gaseous or plasma state (or back) without passing through a liquid state in between!)
Hmm I realise by the time I post this I will have added photos but I think I'll save as a draft for now and maybe sleep before I do that... **Photos added now! Microscope still not set up so you have to make do with my internet searching, sorry
I hope you have enjoyed today's citizen science gemstone lecture brought to you by the ability to recall memorised information without checking my notes and the parasocial relationship I have projected onto you, the Tumblrites, hoping that you will love the science side of gemstones as much as I do!

Emerald Spectacles from India, c. 1620-1660 CE: the lenses of these spectacles were cut from a single 300-carat emerald, and it was believed that they possessed mystical properties
These eyeglasses are also known by the name "Astaneh-e ferdaws," meaning "Gate of Paradise," based on the symbolic associations between the color green and the concept of spiritual salvation/Paradise. That symbolism (which is rooted in Islamic tradition) was especially popular in Mughal-era India, where the spectacles were made.
The lenses were crafted from two thin slices of the same emerald. Together, the lenses have a combined weight of about 27 carats, but given the precision, size, and shape of each lens, experts believe that the original emerald likely weighed in excess of 300 carats (more than sixty grams) before it was cleaved down in order to produce the lenses. The emerald was sourced from a mine in Muzo, Colombia, and it was then transported across the Atlantic by Spanish or Portuguese merchants.
Each lens is encircled by a series of rose-cut diamonds, which run along an ornate frame made of gold and silver. The diamond-studded frame was added in the 1890s, when the original prince-nez design was fitted with more modern frames.
The emerald eyeglasses have long been paired with a second set of spectacles, and they were almost certainly commissioned by the same patron. This second pair is known as "Halqeh-e nur," or the "Halo of Light."
The Halo of Light features lenses that were made from slices of diamond. The diamond lenses were cleaved from a single stone, just like the emerald lenses, with the diamond itself being sourced from a mine in Southern India. It's estimated that the original, uncut diamond would have weighed about 200-300 carats, which would make it one of the largest uncut diamonds ever found.
The lenses are so clear and so smoothly cut that it sometimes looks like they're not even there.
Both sets of spectacles date back to the mid-1600s, and it's generally believed that they were commissioned by a Mughal emperor or prince. The identity of that person is still a bit of a mystery, but it has been widely speculated that the patron was Shah Jahan -- the Mughal ruler who famously commissioned the Taj Mahal after the death of his wife, Mumtaz Mahal. Shah Jahan did rule as the Mughal emperor from about 1628 to 1658.
The emerald and diamond lenses may have been chosen for symbolic, sentimental, and/or cultural reasons, or they may have been chosen simply because they're pretty and extravagant; the original meaning and purpose behind the design is still unclear. Experts do believe that the eyeglasses were designed to be worn by someone, though.
At times, it was believed that the spectacles had spiritual properties, like the ability to promote healing, to ward off evil, to impart wisdom, and to bring the wearer closer to enlightenment. Those beliefs are largely based on the spiritual significance that emeralds and diamonds can have within certain Indic and Islamic traditions -- emeralds may be viewed as an emblem of Paradise, salvation, healing, cleansing, and eternal life, while diamonds are similarly associated with enlightenment, wisdom, celestial light, and mysticism.
The Gate of Paradise and the Halo of Light were both kept in the collections of a wealthy Indian family until 1980, when they were sold to private collectors, and they were then put up for auction once again in 2021. They were most recently valued at about $2 million to $3.4 million per pair.

Mirre’s “How i render gemstones” tutorial!
(note: image above is not what is shown in the walkthrough. It is an example piece)
Ingredients:
Art program that has layers and selection tools
Patience (hubris or stubbornness is fine too)
(recommended) photo references of gemstones and/or prisms
(Optional but very helpful) Knowledge on how to use Reference layers and anti-overflow in Clip studio Paint
For this tutorial i am going to use clip studio’s “anti-overflow” feature. This post is not going to explain how to use that specific setting but you should be able to find guides on how to use it on clip studio’s official website or on youtube.
Please Note: The result of this technique will not 100% represent real life gemstones. These are more simplified but should still make an impression of the brilliance and appeal of gems, crystals and diamonds.
If you don’t work in CSP: the best workaround is to use the polygonal lasso selection tool for the same purpose.
This ended up being a long post so I am putting it under the readmore:
First off; Basic idea on how the light refracts inside a solid transparent object:
Wether it is acrylic, glass, water or crystal, the way light pass through more or less should behave the same as long as it is solid and not hollow inside. Pay attention to how the darkest parts of the stone goes along the inner edges, leaving a ”mid tone” sort of in the center. However, this might vary depending on the light setting. But it is a generally good rule-of-thumb to follow if you’re drawing something not based on a photo. Another thing to pay attention to here is how the placement of the highlight will lit up the inside of the gem in a parallel line. It also shows through on the cast shadow.
Light refraction on a cube:
I have already made two posts on this, so definitely go through them:
CUBE BREAKDOWN POST HERE
But a rough summary from those two links would be: Every side/facet of a gem or a cube etc refracts the light individually and not as one entity (that would make it look hollow and not solid). Think of it like how each piece in a broken mirror individually reflect your face back to you. Like a weird patchwork!
Putting this into practice:
For this tutorial I’m going to be nice to myself and not try to draw perfectly accurate gemstones. Instead I’m gonna draw them with a more ”natural” looking set of facets. Which actually isnt as common in real world as video games makes us think. Some crystals have geometric shapes naturally, but a lot of other stones are not as fancy. Anyway, im taking artistic liberty on these example stones because the technique I’m going to use will work for these just fine.
So, in clip studio paint, I first draw the stones on a vector layer. I give them facets for the front side. Then I duplicate the layer, remove the front facets and replace them with the facets on the back of the stone. The third image here shows both layers visible on top of each other. I now put these into a layer folder and mark the folder as ”reference”.
Now, on a layer below the lineart folder, fill with your base tone. Then make a layer on top (if you can clip it to the base tone, do that), this layer is where you decide where the highlight will be placed. In some cases the highlight is only lighting up one single facet - it really depends on the design of the stone. You can also blend and soften the highlight here if it looks good for you, just make sure not every facet is highlighted. The highlight layer should be on top of all the other layers clipped to the base tone layer.
Now it is time for the juicy juicy stuff! Turn on both lineart layers so they’re both visible. I hid the hilight layer here because it was in the way, but might not be needed in your case. Make a layer clipped to the base tone and paint in the darkest tone. This is where anti-overflow helps me out, because when i run my brush over all these crossed lines it will make the stroke pop in and out for each facet. If you dont use CSP, this is where you can use the lasso tool and select every second facet. It will take a bit more time but it should work similarly.
After the darkest tones I then make a layer for the inside light that the highlight has lit up. Here i keep it inside the darkest tone but this might vary depending on the light setting. If it looks good to me, then that’s what i stick to.
The way I approach rendering the facets here is like the grid in the example images above, every shade and tone appear more or less in each facet but the amount is relative to their position. So a gradient wouldnt have a smooth transition; it would be slightly scewed in each square on this example grid. Essentially like how some bathroom window glass panes look like.
Now it’s time to hide the lineart layer folder and check if the gemstones look decent to you. If not, then you can look up some reference photos and analyze where the values group together the most; be careful not to focus too much on the photos 500 million sparkles. Squint your eyes or blur the reference and try to see how the overall values behae.
I, personally, am satisfied with these rocks so I slap on a gradient map (you can manually color in them too if that’s your thing) and call it a day. The lit up inside of a gemstone tend to have a brighter and more saturated color than the mid tone.
Other Examples with this technique:
If you look up ”gemstone types” you can often find images displaying various facet types from more than just front view. These can serve as useful base templates for practicing this rendering technique. The backside of a gemstone is called the “pavillion” and is really useful to have at hand when it comes to painting the inner refractions. You can probably also use 3D models and convert the wireframe into lineart. But that is slightly out of my pool of knowledge.
Applying this knowledge without using a base lineart layer is of course possible. In this painting I followed a simplified summary of how the facets sparkle: Keep the highlight shape to match the front facet design, and all the inner refractions should be more scattered and split up but face a direction towards the center of the gem. Now don’t you think this sort of makes the gems look like eyes? That’s right! You can, and absolutely should, apply this on eyes to create the most sparkly anime eyes ever.
Now, refracted light that lands on the surface surrounding gemstones varies depending on the material - and if the gem is inside a metal frame it usually doesnt create this much refraction around it. But I want to have fun so i decided to break this rule in the name of pretty sparkles. :)
