My latest completed commission may have been a bit ambitious... because I went wild with it. But I certainly relished in doing so :') Combining my favorite ship with my favorite-ever Disney movie is, uh... a dangerous concoction :'D

The commissioner specifically requested for Azula as Mulan, Sokka as Shang, and Xin Long (my OC dragon from Gladiator) as Mushu. The rest of the cast was up to me to choose, and I pretty much went wild rewatching this movie and picking out some of my favorite moments to recreate them in my style, with these characters. I came up with a lot of correlating characters between both ATLA and 1998's Mulan, but I couldn't hope to draw EVERYTHING, unfortunately. The Herbalist as Mulan's grandmother might feel arbitrary but she honestly felt like the ATLA elderly lady with the most similar personality to Grandma Fa. Fickle, with a unique connection with a seemingly perfectly ordinary animal, old and sassy? Figured it fit! So for once, the Herbalist is Azula's grandma! xD strange notion, I know, Azulon/Herbalist is not a ship I ever thought I'd accidentally put out in the world but there have been wilder ships than that in this fandom...

Momo became Cri-Kee, I wasn't 100% sold on it but when I considered that Avatar features soooo many hybrid animals... I figured he could be a hybrid cricket-lemur. Weird, I know, but eh? Better than nothing xD

Aang as Chien-Po was a no-brainer. He's the only character I settled on instantly, never even considered anyone else for the role. Their personalities line up really well, and Chien-Po's tendency to be OP and resolve things that are outside of other people's reach sounded like he was prime Avatar material! So, while their dietary preferences are an obvious difference between them, I decided to go for it nonetheless considering all their other similarities!

Kino (another Gladiator OC) is Ling, and he actually did give me a ton of trouble to choose. I considered many characters for the role right up until I realized that Kino's personality actually lines up fairly well with Ling's, down to being a class clown type (who ABSOLUTELY would have cut gym class!) and breaking out in song about the hypothetical woman he'd like to fight for? Yeeeeah that's right up his alley xD but there's another reason why I picked Kino...

... And that is my likely unexpected choice for Yao:

ZUKO.

ZUKO IS YAO.

YES.

I'M NOT EVEN SORRY.

(For the uninitiated, Aang, Zuko and Kino are best friends in Gladiator, very often together, and they make a really good team, so that's the extra reason why Kino became the obvious choice for Ling aside from having really similar personalities, definitely closer personalities than, say, Jet, for instance.)

People have likened Zuko to Shang a LOT since ATLA aired. This is the main reason why I'm even making this huge note! I suspect it's primarily because of the aesthetic, let's be real here, and because he becomes Aang's teacher, but people have exaggerated Zuko's alleged similarities with Shang, or taken them out of proportion, in many ways. I actually remember an AMV ages ago with "Be a Man" and it was Zuko "training the Gaang"?? It... didn't feel right to me. Obviously, someone might rebuff with "well, how does Sokka make MORE sense than that, though?" And believe it or not, I have arguments for that... (when do I not...?)

Not only is this what the commissioner specifically requested (and it obviously lines up with the ship we love!), but let's examine the actual reasons why Sokka as Shang adds up:

Sokka actually had to train a bunch of toddlers who weren't paying any attention to him. You know. Kind of how Shang had to train the unruly soldiers who weren't getting anything right. Sokka has a positive relationship with his dad (Zuko, ofc, does not). Shang also has a positive relationship with his dad! And not only this, but there's a military component to both relationships, specifically with Shang wanting to follow on his father's footsteps and aid him in the war... so much like someone else I know, who jumped at every opportunity to rejoin his father in the war, even wishing to join him as a child until Hakoda tasked him with protecting their Tribe instead (kinda like Shang is tasked with training soldiers rather than joining a battlefield).

And the final cherry-on-top that I'd loooove to hear Zuko fans try to argue against... is sexism :') didn't Sokka get characterized as a sexist guy for four episodes, which made people decide that this was his main character trait even if it went away that quickly? Um, yes, that happened. Shang literally sings the memorable song that's a crazy ode to masculinity, including the rather sexist line of "did they send me daughters when I asked for sons". Shang outright abandons Mulan once they discover that she was a woman all along (while, admittedly, choosing to abandon her rather than KILL HER, which as we saw from Chi-Fu, he was NOT supposed to spare her!)...

So, is this REALLY what Zuko fans, who willfully believe their boy is a feminist king (... why? beats me...) are trying to compare their unproblematic blorbo to? :'D Me? I have no problem linking Sokka with Shang due to Sokka's beginnings and due to the fact that both Shang and Sokka have similar growth when it comes to accepting femininity is as valid as masculinity, and as they both learn to respect women as fighters and potential heroes! (I simply do not believe Sokka's ENTIRE tenure in ATLA was about that, though, and that's what I continue to clash with the fandom over...) So... all this is why I've reasoned that Sokka is a VERY solid choice for Shang, in fact, better than Zuko could hope to be.

... but this isn't all.

Maybe some might accept my arguments for Sokka-Shang. And then, they might ask:

WHY ZUKO AS YAO, THO??

... And the truth is it took me long to see it, myself, but HOLY SHIT, DOES IT FIT!

What is the primary thing we remember about Yao in Mulan? This guy is constantly itching for a fight, to prove himself, surely riddled with insecurities that he exteriorizes through overcompensation of masculinity. He's funny as fuck, but he's taking himself 100% seriously as a manly man all the time, and he's always ready for violence. But there's one more thing...

He treats Mulan as his RIVAL.

And more often than not? SHE SCREWS HIM OVER. Intentionally or not.

What does that sound like? Why, yes, it sounds a LOT like Azula and Zuko's sibling relationship!

The fact that Yao is a temperamental dude who lashes out easily at things (oh, something he has in common with Zuko!), that he specifically resents Mulan (in this case, Azula, just as Zuko does!) and is either constantly looking to defeat her and prove his superiority over her (... wait, just as Zuko with Azula??), that he has a black eye perpetually across the movie, and it's his LEFT EYE (just as Zuko's scar is on his left eye! :'D), that he's friends with a pacifist he has basically nothing in common with, personality-wise (just like Zuko and Aang!), and that he pretty much has a REDEMPTION ARC in which he goes from a bitter, asshole rival to Mulan to treating her as a friend and ally, to the point where he was disappointed to leave her behind and THEN joined her at once when she says she has a plan? :') I have always been critical of Zuko's redemption arc, goes without saying. But if ANY of these characters redeemed himself in any significant way, it certainly seems to be Yao to me, and with people gushing NON-STOP about Zuko's redemption? Why, he ought to be the character who goes from bitter rival to loyal friend, right?

So. I'm not even sorry. Zuko is Yao. And I'd dare say that he should be flattered by the comparison, even, because Yao ends up being cool as FUCK!

I don't really talk about this much nowadays, but Mulan was my favorite Disney movie growing up, it ABSOLUTELY had a formative influence on me as a little girl, and Mulan was my favorite female character for a looooong time. Thus, any excuse to rewatch this movie makes me happy as heck. With the wisdom of age I know, of course, that it's not perfect, it's not what China wants, it's not the most thoughtful depiction of Chinese culture or the most faithful adaptation of Mulan's poem (... but I'd also dare bring up that the 2009 Chinese adaptation ISN'T all that faithful either...), but it has a kind of magic in it, a solid storytelling flow, so many memorable moments one after the next, that I could hardly choose which scenes to depict... Disney has never again seen the storytelling heights it reached with Mulan in 1998. I don't even care if that's a controversial opinion in any way... this is their best animated feature for me, and nobody can change my mind.

So... depicting Azula, my beloved, in all these scenarios as this character I adored and idolized as a child, was so damn fulfilling for me. While some might think that, personality-wise, these two ladies don't have much in common, the fact that Mulan is sent to a matchmaker who basically tells her she looks good but is going to be the worst wife ever...? Our girl Azula, with all those insecurities about being unloveable and a monster, probably would relate big time to that.

Mulan is also an INTELLIGENT soldier rather than a brawny one, which is how she starts to make progress in the army, it's how she manages to overcome the huns with that avalanche... and Azula's primary difference with most other antagonists in ATLA is that she's smart as fuck. She is very strong, no doubt, but a LOT of that strength comes from her intelligence, from assessing situations in unique ways, from planning and strategizing. The way Mulan finds the most unexpected solutions that still pay off reminds me a lot of how Azula achieves unexpected feats through rather unorthodox means, capable of taking over a city with basically no bloodshed while her nation has spent 100 years trying and failing to do so through major army incursions and who knows how much senseless violence. Obviously, I'm not saying what Azula did is GOOD and it's kind of dumb that we always have to point that out... I'm merely comparing the magnitude of the feats, and the fact that they both come from ladies who use strategy and intelligence to achieve their goals rather than muscle and physical power.

And while anyone would rage at me for the comparison between Fa Zhou (her dad) and Ozai, the truth is the dynamic between them CAN be compared, if loosely: Mulan literally goes to war to keep her father safe. Azula goes to war under her father's orders. Hell, she makes herself BAIT in the Eclipse to make sure the Gaang won't get to her dad?? While it's very much possible to say that both characters have different personalities and attitudes in life... I'd also bring up that their contexts are evidently completely different. I wouldn't say for certain that Azula, had she been raised outside a Royal Family, would be EXACTLY like Mulan... but they might have more similar traits than one might expect. Ultimately, though... I love them both. And this opportunity to swap their places was pretty much a dream come true!

Kiss The Homie Straight On The Mouth

Tango doesn't even have time to get an entire lungful of new air before Skizz's voice is booming his name.

He's standing across the circle, hands on his hips, easy smile on his lips and eyes laser focused on Tango. "Walk with me, buddy."

Snickers and eye rolls from the others, but Tango ignores them. He gladly follows the tugging in his chest like an invisible string towards Skizz - he'd done it, he'd already had a game to prove to everyone (and himself, more like) that he doesn't need to follow Skizz, that he can strike out on his own and succeed doing it, even, but it's a new game now. He doesn't need Skizz, but he wants him.

Skizz turns on his heel and marches into the woods without checking that he's following. Tango loyally dogs his steps, excitement building in his belly the way it always does when Skizz is up to something. It means that soon enough, they'll be up to something. And he's missed being up to something with Skizz.

Skizz leads them far enough away that the sounds of their friends fades into the distance, and then rounds on him. "Tango Top," he says meaningfully.

"Skizzleface," Tango shoots back cheerfully, posting up against a tree. He has a stupid grin on his face and he knows it, but he doesn't care - especially when Skizz has the same one valiantly fighting its way through his serious business facade.

Skizz steps into his space like he belongs there and Tango's stomach flutters because he does. Skizz has a good foot of height on Tango, and he uses it to loom over him, caging him in against the tree with the warm line of his body. Tango slouches harder against the rough bark, tilting his head up to meet those bright blue eyes, sparkling with mirth and affection. He basks in Skizz's full attention. There's a warm buzzing under his skin and he squirms in place, unable to stand still.

Skizz schools his face into a stern expression that doesn't fool Tango for a second. "Are you gonna murder me again this season, Top?" he asks.

Tango's grin cracks even wider. "Maaaaybe," he drawls, just to see Skizz scowl. "I guess we'll have to see."

"No," Skizz reprimands him. "You love me this season, I can tell."

"Well that's a different question," Tango laughs, because it's true. He'd loved Skizz the entire time they were enemies, loved him like a wildfire loves the trees.

"Nuh uh, homie," Skizz shoots back, sticking his tongue out like a child. Tango laughs harder. Skizz leans in closer, nose to nose with him. "We're friends again now."

Tango resists the urge to bite him just to hear him squawk, and instead says, pointedly ignoring him inches from his face to study his nails, "I don't know, I might get a better offer. I did pretty good without you, you know."

Skizz's eyes fly open in outrage. "Whu - buh - " His bushy eyebrows draw together in consternation. "You haven't even heard my offer yet!"

"So what're you waiting for?" Tango teases him, meeting his eyes again and tilting his chin up. "Lay it on me, Skippy!"

He sees the glint in Skizz's eyes the split second before he moves so he's already pushing up to meet him as Skizz crushes their lips together. One broad hand snakes around his waist to lay flat against Tango's lower back, pulling him up and into Skizz's warm bulk. The other takes a firm grip on the back of his head, thumb pressed into the hollow behind his ear, easily angling Tango's head right where he wants him.

Skizz kisses with laser-focused intensity. He kisses like he's on one of his ridiculous missions: reduce Tango to a quivering mess in five minutes or less. Tango throws his arms around Skizz's neck and digs his nails into his broad shoulders and kisses back to make it as difficult for him as possible, because he knows Skizz doesn't want to do anything that's easy.

When they finally separate, Tango is pleasantly lightheaded and warm all over. Skizz's hand has worked its way under his shirt, a brand of heat against his spine that's impossible to ignore. His thumb sweeps in tight arcs in the hollow under his ear and Tango makes a noise that would be embarrassing if there was anybody else around to hear it.

"It's a compelling offer, to be sure," he teases Skizz, drawing a short huff of laughter out of him. His breath fans out hot over Tango's cheek and resummons his broad grin.

"Let's see Bdubs top that, dude," Skizz says, playfully biting at Tango's jaw. Tango helpfully tilts his head to give him more room to work while he hums thoughtfully.

"You don't know what we got up to in those towers," he says, and cackles when Skizz bites him harder in retribution. "All right, all right, already," he says, rolling his eyes and tweaking one of Skizz's ears between his fingers. "Twist my arm. We can team up again."

"Yeah, that's what I'm talking about, homie!" Skizz cheers, beaming a triumphant grin. Tango laughs and runs his fingers through the short hairs on the back of Skizz's neck. Everyone's going to make fun of them - if not everyone, then at least Cleo, and probably Etho and Bdubs, too. Maybe Impulse. Scar, even… But it's so nice having Skizz close enough to touch again. His whole body is buzzing with it. Skizz's fingers, unable to keep still, drum a happy beat against his lower back, and every touch sends a frisson of electricity up his spine. Who cares what everyone else thinks? He knows what he wants, and it's his for the taking.

Skizz's face softens into a dopey, affectionate smile. He leans in until their foreheads are pressed together, noses digging into cheeks and breath mingling in the scant inches between their lips. "I missed you, buddy," he confesses warmly.

Tango sighs, a soft, happy sound, then giggles, because it's impossible to keep the laughter from bubbling up around Skizz. "I maybe missed you, too, and stuff," he says, tightening his grip on Skizz's shoulders. "You know, a little."

"From you, Top, that's a love poem," Skizz drawls. Tango throws his head back and laughs, because yeah, maybe it is, a little. Skizz chases him and kisses him again while he's laughing, messy and off-center. He keeps trying, and Tango keeps laughing, until Skizz finally huffs in frustration, grabs his face in both hands, and holds him still long enough to land one. And then Tango forgets about laughing in favor of opening up to the warm press of Skizz's mouth on his. It's slower this time, softer, as Skizz pours his love and affection into every movement and Tango soaks it up like parched earth after rain.

When he finally pulls away, it's slowly, reluctantly, and he presses a last lingering kiss to the corner of Tango's mouth. "We should probably, you know, start getting tools and stuff."

"I don't know what you're talking about, Skippy," Tango says, refusing to relinquish his hold on him. "I got a tool right here."

"Terrible," Skizz deadpans. "You should be ashamed."

"Never," Tango declares. "No shame." He knows Skizz is right, and they need to get about the business of surviving, now that they've - ahem - sealed their alliance. But he can't even imagine taking his hands off of Skizz right now. "C'mon, we have at least until the creepers come out before we have to get underground."

"You're a bad influence," Skizz says in despair, but he also ducks his head to press a kiss under Tango's jaw, so Tango wins the argument. "I'm trying to keep us alive, here," he grumbles against Tango's neck, and makes no move to disengage.

"Oh, we're definitely dying first," Tango says cheerfully, letting his eyes slide closed. "It'll be just like old times."

Skizz rebukes him with a sharp nip, drawing out a squeak of protest. "It's your relentless optimism that really does it for me," he says dryly. "C'mon, we could do it. We could go the distance, dude."

Tango snorts. "Sure, the distance," he says. "All six feet of it."

Skizz huffs in frustration, and Tango rolls his eyes and then takes his face in both hands and reluctantly pulls him away from his neck to look him in the eyes. "Skizz," he says, with straightforward honesty. "I don't care if we die first. Let the sweats fight it out amongst themselves. I'm just here for a good time with my buddy. That work for you?"

Skizz's eyes once again soften and he turns his head, stubble scratching pleasantly against Tango's skin, to press a kiss to his palm. "Works for me, dude," he says warmly. "I'd rather die with you than live with somebody else."

"Sap," Tango accuses, to cover for the way his face flushes and his chest flutters.

Skizz winks at him. "But," he says, taking hold of Tango's hands and gently prying them off of his face, stepping back out of Tango's space and leaving him bereft and suddenly chilly. "That doesn't mean I'm not trying! And in the interest of both of us living a little longer, we're gonna go find somewhere to build a house."

"Ugh," Tango complains dramatically, allowing himself to be dragged after Skizz by one hand. "I'm not building it!"

Skizz gives his hand a yank and reels him in so he can wrap one burly arm around his neck, hauling him in sideways so Tango's shoulder is wedged into his ribs. "We'll see about that," he says, pressing his smile into Tango's wild yellow hair.

Tango grumbles loudly and at the same time leans into him further, snaking an arm beneath Skizz's suit jacket to curl around his waist. They stagger into the woods, tangled up together, squabbling affectionately, once again exactly where they're supposed to be.

More WRA and Roseblings headcanons 🥀

Part 1!

Gem inherited her mothers' green eyes, whereas fWhip inherited his father's blue. After she transitioned, people would often say she looked just like their mother, to the point it was uncomfortable. Gem never knew her mother, she doesn't share the grief of her people (as much as she understands why they grieve, she finds it hard to sympathise), and being thrown mournful glances and overhearing hushed whispers of the late empress left a bitterness inside even if she knew it was illogical to be upset over it.

"What do you know of my mother? I did not even know my mother!" Has been a phrase Gem's regrettably snapped more times than she'd like privy

Just the complicated feelings/experiences children of a mother who died during childbirth having to deal with growing up, especially when that mother was such a beloved political figure as Grand Empress MelodiaRose of the Wither Rose Dynasty

All traditional Grimmish names are compounds. it stems from their language having a logographic writing system (e.g. Chinese), so it contains a separate glyph for each word or phrase. Traditionally, Grimmish parents choose two words and/or names and compound them together for their children.

As mentioned in the previous part, fwhips' name is a poor translation between mythic and common, and it means "someone who gets back up after being knocked down".

Gemini comes from the tradition of the firstborn heir being named after a constellation or celestial body, and then Tay is a synonym of May in Grimmish. May/Tay in Grimmish has to do with the rising sun, and it symbolises the heir being the rising Emperor of their nation. Not that that happens with Gem, though.

So Gem has a very similar name to her father (like John vs. Jack levels of similar) and looks almost identical to her mother.

Unlike in other empires, adoption in the Grimmish royal family means being included in the line of succession, and having the same rights to inheritance as blood-related children.

With a large portion of the population being non-human ("monsters"), monster hunters historically have been a very big problem for the residents of the Grimlands. The heads on spikes and towering walls are to keep the hunters out.

This leads to many orphaned children in the Grimlands and surrounding empires, especially orphaned vampire children since Vampires are fiercely protective of their young to their dying breaths. Adoption is a large part of Grimmish culture, and they take it very seriously.

Their foster system is the best in the realm, support workers for children in the system are highly regarded (in the same way soldiers and doctors are), and as mentioned, royal adoptees have the same legal rights to inheritance as their adopted siblings.

Hence why Sausage, an adopted child, was allowed to become king of Mythland when he had no blood ties to the royal lineage.

Speaking of, I think Sausage would make iron friendship bracelets for the other Wither Rose Alliance members. Pearls' has sunflowers carved into the metal and inlaid with yellow gems. Gems' has amethyst pendants in the shape of magical symbols. fWhips' is painted black with little spiked studs painted red.

Sausage has a lot of scars from growing up, and when asked about them he has a running joke of always coming up with inconsistent and elaborate lies on how he got them, fWhip is in on it too. He's told the same advisor three different stories about how he got the scar on his upper arm (a warden, falling down a cliffside, stabbed by an assassin). No one knows the real story except Sausage, not even his siblings, but that's just Sausage for you.

With the surplus of crops, especially wheat, in Gilded Helanthia, I think baking would be a very popular and cheap hobby. Also popularised by their Queen taking an interest in it. Pearl usually makes pastries, tarts, and breads which she'll bring to WRA meetings for taste testing.

Gem doesn't have traditional courtiers as most rulers do, she has a large family of Allays who live in her tower and do nice fae things like cleaning up and bringing her important documents. Only occasionally do they hide things from her, or take coins, but Gem finds it hard to be mad when they technically "work" for her unpaid. The Allays don't seem to mind, though.

Along with that, Copper Golems aren't an uncommon sight in the Grimlands and Pixandria, the copper supplied from the latter and the engineering from the former. The Copper Golems around Eastvale are what inspired a young fWhip to take up engineering in the first place.

And native to the northern regions of Gilded Helanthia and further up north into Mythland and the Codlands are Glares. Just to round it all out. I imagine the Glares around the swamp have the moss cloaks (like depicted in-game), whereas ones from Mythlandic dark oak forests lean towards liverwort and fungus, and the ones from the Plains of Gilded Helanthia coontails and vines.
