OPEN CALL FOR BETA READERS!
Tumblr media
My friends and I at @strangefellowsstudio are writing a graphic novel! As of right now, the first draft is nearly completed and we're looking for beta readers and editors. We're willing to read other works in exchange, or do small drawings of your characters!
In the city of Luxxon, airships are king. They dominate the shipping industry, the cruises, and the taxis. Ada Burke is set to inherit all of it, an idea she's not exactly comfortable with. One night, she overhears an insidious plot to destroy her family's company and narrowly escapes with her life. Hiding in the slums, she must team up with the Starlings, a group of shapeshifting thieves with the charismatic Magpie as their leader. Will they be able to work together? Can she save her family in time?
Starlings is a story about family, connections, and becoming who you choose to be. Read and comment on the first draft here !

Fit To Print - Chapter 1
Title might change but part of a Superman AU fanfic to exorcise plot demons.
This AU is a gaslamp set genderbent Lois and Clark (Or Lewis and Clara as it were) set around 1900.
Taking inspiration from history and canon, but playing til I get a story I like.
No content warning for this chapter.
“Are you lost, miss?”
Clara turned, her skirt brushing against her boots, as she moved. And nearly sighed with relief to see one of the older newsboys there, his familiar face breaking into a grin.
“See if I bring you chestnuts the next time it snows.” Her voice slipped out of the proper elocution her teachers had trained her with and into the countrified cadence that was more common around the farm where she was raised.
The boy grinned over his stack of papers and saluted her with his cap before turning back to the bustling street to hawk his wares.
And it was time for Clara to go to work.
She reminded herself that it was time to write another letter home, her parents’ words of praise and stories about the farm and town and all of the people she knew back home still ringing in her ears as if she had just been talking to them in the farmhouse kitchen and not reading them over a slice of toast and jam in the lodging house where she had rooms. Then, she wove her way to her desk, greeting her colleagues as they wished her good morning.
Her colleagues.
Most mornings when she came into the Daily Planet building, she heard some version of the newsboy's question. And most were neither jesting or particularly friendly when they asked.
She belonged here. Just as much as the typists and typesetters.
And they didn't pay her to just let her mind wander.
They paid Clara to find a story, follow it, and write it up. After all, she was a reporter.
She was typing, eyes hidden by spectacles as she glanced at her notes while finishing her most recent story. She reread it quickly, eyes scanning for errors, but her writing had no egregious spelling or grammatical errors. More than that,  it told the story about the attempts to sabotage the newly completed suspension bridge that spanned the water leading to Metropolis and the arrest of the saboteurs.
“Finished”. Clara sighed, and looked up to see her story pulled free from the typewriter.
“Nice work, Miss Kent. Good story.”
That might be true, but Clara was sure that was not why Lewis Lane was standing by her desk, reading her article. He was another reporter, and one who covered even more stories than she did.
“The boss asked if we could both go into their office to discuss a story.”
“Both of us?”
“That was what I was told. Shall we?”
Clara took his hand and stood, following Lewis into the editor's office.
Behind her desk, Mrs. Perry- White sat, a brass plaque with the Daily Planet's image behind her. More than a mere figurehead, she was a formidable editor, and ran the newspaper that she had inherited from her late husband efficiently. It made the Daily Planet one of the city's most successful newspapers.
Even if some of her decisions raised eyebrows.
Like hiring female reporters.
Still, Mrs. Perry-White had never treated her differently from any other reporter, either with praising her or pinning her ears back for a mistake. Or, as she had been told often enough,  “Your skirts, Miss Kent, do not write for me. Your hands and your brains do.”
It always made her nervous to stand before that shining wooden desk when called into the office though.
And the next words did nothing to soothe her anxiousness.
“Ah good. Lane, if you would close the door.”
The wooden door clicked into place gravely.
Then, Mrs. Perry-White lifted her head and looked them both in the eye.
“I have an assignment for the two of you.”

Fading of the Veil: World Basics
Note: None of this is necessary reading before jumping into the story, but I thought I would add it in for anyone who wants to know more about the world.
Tumblr media
There are small levels of magic in all foods, and just like how we are able to convert food into energy,  magic users — called "Flickers" — can do the same for magic, while the majority of people lack the ability to process it, so it simply passes through.
People do not see it that simply, though. In their minds, the majority are the only healthy ones, while Flickers are ill and dangerous. Some people will not even touch a Flicker in fear of catching what cannot be caught.
Much like how some people have more energy than others, some Flickers have more magic than others. In order to test if a person has magic, as well as how much, trial jars are used.
Tumblr media
If you do prove to be a Flicker, by law you are enlisted into the military. The division of the magic users is called "The Coven of the Fallen," and the branch in Sheeglen is called "The Lapis Order."  The main purpose of the Coven is to fight rogue Flickers and solve murders done by Flickers. While it may seem cruel to have them hunt their own people, fighting a Flicker is seen as something too dangerous for anyone else....and no one cares if a Flicker dies.
Once you are in the Coven, if you are useful, you will be placed in a squad. These squads are typically made up by 5 roles, and are sorted by power types.
Tumblr media
Sheeglen has one of the best known facilities for training and using Flickers, so many are sent there for training, then sent all around the kingdom for missions. Almost all the Flicker characters you will meet will be from Sheeglen for this reason.
Tumblr media
Despite the hatred for Flickers, many of the equipment and devices in their world rely on Flickers to power them. Low-level Flickers (too hated to get other jobs) end up working at power-cell factories, where they work in horrible conditions for little pay. They have their magic syphoned into a machine which then charges "glow cells."
Tumblr media
This technology powers everything from trains, to street lamps, to vehicles.
Tumblr media
This story is heavily based off of the Victorian and Edwardian era's, as well as Scottish folklore, but does not take place in our world. However, a keen folklorist might be able to solve some of the murders ahead of time...

GOOD AFTERNOON, LIKERS!!! #TGIF or just a good week overall?
Well as I've been known to say often on here...the show must go on. #mercuryretrograde definitely appeared to be in effect. It has been an introspective time, but it has not been a completely good time either. This week has been crazy. I recently found out a friend passed after a pretty horrible day.
Yeah...#that.
Through all the craziness...the #writer mind has been active still. And I've been #grateful. Especially right now. Case in point...
It's time for (a late) EDITING, TYPING, and WRITING.
EDITING. Nothing much here this week actually. I've mostly just been doing odds and ends in editing. I have enjoyed that I seem to have re-opened my love of wordplay and messing with structure though.
So...right path.
TYPING. Mercury retrograde willing...I felt that I might be sneaking in some #blog time this weekend.
We'll see.
WRITING. And in the end, there would #always be the writing.
Regardless of the bad news. Regardless of the sad news. Regardless of crazy 'did that just happen?' energy.
So that has been the highlight for me this week. Last week, I mentioned that I had started back on a new project. And I tried to see if there was anywhere in the #gaslampsandiego to sit down and write again. The coffeehouses down here have not recovered from the pandemic. So far...Attempt 1 was a bust. BUT...I still wrote. I even created a new character. lol.
I've been working on it most of this week. And going into the weekend...I will keep going. My interest has been stroked.
So...onward and upward.

Piano Day & Writing Update
Happy Piano Day! The 88th day of the year (because 88 piano keys). I once dreamed of releasing my gaslamp fantasy short story The Secret Piano on Piano Day, but life had other plans, and that’s okay.  The Secret Piano is still coming, one of these days, to my newsletter. (You can still sign up if you want to be the first to get the free short story when it does happen! Or if you’re interested…
