A guy from my screenwriting class shared this one with me and I’m honestly so relieved that this type of media exists
I took Swedish in college and my brain translated parts of songs into Swedish as I learned more of the language. This was also long before my AuDHD was confirmed by a clinical psychologist. It was just another weird secret I kept about my brain

I was listening to pApA $ucre by Eddy de Pretto and got real stuck on "ton truc" being used. Because I knew it meant "your thing", so I kept looking to seeing if it also could be a euphemism for penis based on context.
Because it completely slipped my mind that "your thing" was slang for penis in English too

👋 Hi all! I appreciate your responses on the book club idea so far! Now, if among those interested, we have a disparity in the levels of reading comprehension, I would divide the club in two groups : one of people who can already read whole books in French/fluent/native french speakers, and another group of people currently learning the language who want to practice reading in French and maybe would like the support of others in the same situation.
Each group would read a different book every month to be better suited to both levels; and at the end of the month, we can share our thoughts between groups in various ways. (If done on discord, we could set up voice chat sessions, or have meetings where we read a summary of the book we read, or our review of it...).
I personally would love to be in a group with fellow native french speakers who want to read more french. 99% of what I read is in English, and I've been wanting to reconnect and re-spark interest in my first language. So if that also feels relatable to any of you, you would be so welcome to join this. It would be nice to have a variety of people there.
❤️Like this post if you would like to join, and tell me in the notes/ask/DM if you'd be on Tumblr and/or Discord so I can plan accordingly. Thank you! ✨
#This would not be a study group to be clear - it simply is adjacent by virtue of it being reading/writing practice for learners.#So the fluent group can just chat however they want between themselves and don't necessarily even have to interact with the learning group#Just welcome to yknow#And vice versa#Then you can dicuss together in a third space meant for it.#french#french language#french books#book club#french book club#Upthebaguette#french side of tumblr#If you have any questions you can DM me

I read your pinned post where you mentioned trying to learn French and going off of the fact that you know Spanish to gauge the difficulty and friend. Let Me Tell You. French is apparently HARDER to learn than Spanish (I remember being told why, I think it's because there are less cognates and because well. Look at french, just look at it and also fuck you false cognates /lh) and I can honestly agree with that. I know a very small amount of spanish and even I can still glean a meaning when seeing written spanish sometimes. French before I learned it is fucking unintelligible. I am a 21 year old adult who has been studying since middle school and sometimes I still doubt myself and need to call up my best friend wordreference to make sure I actually know what x french word means. At 11 years old I made the executive decision to take the only language my school offered other than Spanish purely to spite my dad, by high school I was in college-level courses and I STILL wrestle with this language after a decade of study. I've met a NATIVE SPEAKER who tells me even he finds the language confusing. There is no winning with french. Anyways, thank you for listening to my insane people ramblings about the french language.
FRENCH IS SO DIFFICULT 😭
(I have nothing else to add to what you said I just agree …. Spanish is so kind to me in comparison. Even Japanese feels easier than French to me. )
#I’m glad it’s not just me who struggles with it lmaoo#any French learners are so brave and I salute you#language#French#uhh I think I have a tag for asks but I forgot#asks#Quinn replies#?#maybe one of those

ooooooh my god i just realized this but. Lysander is probably SO jealous that Rosienne is able to just casually chat with Rook in French and he can't lmaooo
#💌 personal#he would try to learn except i don't think he's much of a language learner#he's not really academically minded in general#he's better with like. practical hands on skills#but its funny to imagine him just fucking SEETHING because he wants to talk to his bf in a language nobody else understands too :((#rosienne sees RIGHT thru him and thinks its the funniest thing ever lmao#he'd talk to rook in french even more often then just to spite lysander because he's an annoying bitch like that <3

ok decided i'm going to learn french starting in the spring. i'm sooo nervous.
#i'm a little (LOT) scared bc french seems like a VERY hard language#and i can barely speak english but....#i really really want to....#it was between french and italian (and i also had a small idea about german but decided against it)#but i think ultimately french would be more useful maybe?#and also i bought a book in paris that's like. i forget the word (see. barely speak english) but it's like one page is french#and the opposite page is english. to help language learners.#which seems like a sign. i guess.#idk i'm really interested in how it goes learning a second language online

Figuring out what is normal to understand vs what would probably need translated in the Galidraan au re: Anakin, Ahsoka, and Derry is very difficult because despite being bilingual and working on a third language I do not know if the gaps in my language skills are normal or if I am just an idiot.
#chit chat#galidraan au#for example#in french i can debate the morality of particular laws just fine although i speak very slowly#but i cannot keep directions straight and i cannot remember the difference between right and left#if you give it to me north south east west im fine but left right up the hill down in the valley mean nothing to me#is that normal?#i don't know#with spanish im only learning stuff that's directly relevant to my job#so i can give detailed instructions on exactly which appliance goes to what house on what day#but i couldn't order a pizza#is *that* normal?#i couldn’t say#language is hard#trying to write three different ESL learners is even harder

“but sasha you just spent like the past hour complaining about having to talk to other people in french why would you want to go back to europe” easy. i don’t speak german or italian or spanish. and the awkwardness of being an english speaker in austria or italy or wherever is far better than trying to speak subpar french to a french person
#sasha speaks#have you ever spoken to a french person. in french. it's one of the most intimidating experiences in the world. it's like bomb diffusal#joke. sort of. but it's really hard :( esp cause a lot of french people will just talk to YOU in english if your french is bad#once again i apologize deeply to maxime from cameroon for my horrible french today but he was very nice and patient about it#non-french francophones tend to be more patient and forgiving about the language and with learners in my experience...#although i know he was probably like. trained to talk to learners. and not just anybody would have that kind of helpful attitude#also i think west african french accents are easier to understand a lot of times than france french or quebecois accents SORRY#idk why but i do#also for the record when i travel somewhere even if i don't know the language i do TRY to learn at least a few common phrases and words#i do TRY to be polite and learn a bit. i don't want to be an ignorant self-centered american#(my gd i am embarrassed to be american when i travel)#and in most places people seem to be cool about that#i can actually get by a bit reading italian but spoken italian is pretty much useless to me#but german. sorry guys. hopeless
