My thoughts on the general idea that isekai anime started to go downhill when they started to be written by men featuring male protagonists in wish-fulfillment adventures is that if you look beyond the current trends of isekai--beyond anime, even--you'll find that there are a lot of works of isekai (or, as they're called in English, "portal fantasy") written by men that featured girl protagonists that didn't have the same issues people find in current isekai when discussing the genre's flaws. (Some of these works are a lot older, and have other issues relevant to the time, but that's another topic.)

Off the top of my head, you have L. Frank Baum, Lewis Carroll, and C.S. Lewis as examples of men who wrote portal fantasies with girls as protagonists that didn't have the same issues that you see people criticize in isekai anime. The main difference I could see between their works and isekai anime that people dislike is that they were writing for a more general audience of children. More often than not, they also had younger girls who were either related to them or the children of friends of theirs that inspired them to write those stories. Lewis dedicated The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe to his goddaughter Lucy, Lewis Carroll wrote for Alice Liddell and her family, etc.

Even looking at more recent examples of isekai/isekai-adjacent works that feature girls and are written by men--Coraline by Neil Gaiman, Labyrinth by Jim Henson, Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro--if you look up interviews by those people, they often cite their daughters as inspiration for the stories and protagonists they wrote.

The underlying theme I see here, is that none of them were horny while writing their works. (There's debate about Carroll, but I'm not going to go into that for now.)

I'm not saying that you have to be a dad if you're a man writing these kinds of works, but there is a general sense of empathy for the younger protagonists that doesn't involve sexualizing underage characters. I think that's one of the main reasons why these stories are different from current isekai that people often criticize. Just my two cents.

(There is one European isekai that is written by a man and features an overpowered male protagonist--that would be Michael Ende's The Neverending Story. But that story makes it a plot point about what happens when the isekai protagonist becomes too powerful for his own good.)

ALICE'S WONDERLAND BAKERY

Alice's Wonderland Bakery is a preschool series for Disney Junior, which premiered on February 9, 2022. It is placed in the same canon as the Disney movie Alice in Wonderland.

The series revolves around Alice, the great-granddaughter of the original Alice Pleasance Liddell, who is a young baker working at the Wonderland Bakery. As she explores the kingdom on various culinary adventures, she is accompanied by Fergie the white rabbit, Hattie, and Rosa—the Princess of Hearts.

The teapot-shaped Wonderland Bakery has a kitchen where some of the equipment are animated, namely the oven and the mixer. The bakery also has a pantry which is vertical tunnel where the ingredients are on shelves on the sides, and anyone who enters will mostly float inside as if they are in space. The desserts (and to a lesser extent foods) the characters make are mostly magical, resulting in either troublesome or pleasant effects.

Alice's Wonderland Bakery is based on Disney's animated feature Alice in Wonderland (1951), which in turn is based on the Alice book series by Lewis Carroll.

In the film, there is a scene in which the Mad Hatter hosts a tea party with teapots that pipe music, hats producing three-layer frosted cakes, and exploding firework candles in the sky. 

Disney Television Animation decided to produce a heritage project based upon the scene, which would also take inspiration from the sense of connection brought by food.

Creator Chelsea Beyl said:

"I started thinking about all the whimsy, the comedy, and the peculiar characters that are in the original movie and thought, 'Wow, preschoolers are going to love this' ... It's silly. And then we're combining all that with baking, which, of course, kids love to do as well."

In May 2021, Disney Junior greenlit the series, to air on the network in 2022.

According to co-executive producer and art director Frank Montagna, the shift in storytelling from a 1950s 2D-animated film to a 2022 computer-animated preschool TV series was unexpectedly simple. He stated that there are many enjoyable activities in Wonderland, such as the tea parties, cards, and mazes.

The team removed the frightening elements from the original film and kept the entertaining ones. Throughout the book and the film, there are references to the words "Eat me" and "Drink me". Because of this, Montaga came up with the idea of fusing Alice in Wonderland with a bakery when Beyl initially presented the show to him. The show highlights the importance of food, which is used as a form of creativity and self-expression; Alice makes friends and learns of other cultures through food.

Beyl stated that "food [is] essentially [Alice's] superpower ... [and] how she connects with all these curious and peculiar characters." The series pays homage to the original Alice, who is always thinking, by having its version of Alice constantly trying to figure out things.

It did not take Montagna long to come up with the design for Alice's Wonderland Bakery since the original Alice in Wonderland "has always been such a core part of [his] being".

Since the original designs were so shaped-driven and everything was already round, bouncy, and rubbery, he found converting them into 3D models rather easy.

The team at ICON Creative Studio, according to Montagna, worked tirelessly to give the show a "bouncy and rubbery" feel, particularly with the Cheshire Cat—the only character from the 1951 film to appear in the series. Montagna believed that the team truly needed him to embody his role from the original film. Since television computer animation budgets were rather small, many factors needed to be considered carefully. For the character to be correctly rigged, the team would need to be very clear about how they wanted the character to look.

The team wanted the characters to truly reflect modern-day children, which also required giving them origins that Carroll may never have imagined.

Beyl sought to reimagine some characters from the original film to enrich Wonderland with a wider range of cultures.

The Hatter family's character design, kitchen—as well as the recipes Alice and Hattie cook together—are drawn from Japanese culture. Meanwhile, several aspects of the Hearts family were influenced by Cuban cuisine and culture, including their dialogue (which includes Spanish words), clothing, palace, and set design.

The show later introduces a Persian-influenced caterpillar family. Certain characters are also gender flipped.

Numerous foods from different cultures are featured in the series, including pastelitos (Cuban), mochi (Japanese), carrot calzone (italian), grape gazpacho, huevos habaneros (spanish) and kuku sib zamini (Persian).

The series references several iterations of Alice in Wonderland, including the 2010 film directed by Tim Burton. The White Rabbit hole served as the model for Alice's pantry, which features an endless supply of food items. For the ingredients, the team aimed to combine wacky Wonderland-style elements with real-world meals. Examples of this are "Bread and Butterflies", "Disa-pears", and "Rea-pears". Since nothing is impossible in Wonderland, the team were able to incorporate many unrealistic ideas of food into the show, including an upside-down cake.

On June 6, 2023, it was announced that Kathryn Beaumont (who voiced Alice in the 1951 Disney film) would be making a guest appearance in the 22-minute special "Alice's First Day in Wonderland".

Virgil's parents, while very loving and very much loved, don't understand that Virgil is no longer a child. They try to protect him from things like swearing, sex, and even things that used to scare him that he now loves. For example, heavy music bands such as Avenged Sevenfold used to scare Virgil because they were loud, but now A7X is one of his favorite bands. Virgil also dislikes being treated like royalty, despite being a prince. Veronica, while liking more stereotypically "white girl" things, understands Virgil and hangs out with him regularly. Veronica will inherit the throne.

The Queen and the Welshman

I read Rosemary Anne Sisson’s novelisation of this earlier in the year & planned to investigate the theatre & TV versions as best as I could and see what I could put together for history fandom here on tumblr (because it seems to still be the only filmed version of the story of Catherine de Valois and Owen Tudor).  Then I kept discovering slightly different versions (it was restaged! it went on tour! there was also a radio play version!), so it got a little more complicated, but anyhooo, here are my findings about the original theatre play that started it all!

 It was Sisson’s first play and her big break, and something she seems to have returned to several times over the years, hence all the different versions, but the original was performed by the London Club Theatre Group in August 1957 for the Edinburgh Fringe Festival.

It was an odd success story, as the piece was distinctly old-fashioned for the era (”history in watercolour” as one of the critics put it), but it was a hit with Festival audiences -  it fared better than most of the main Festival pieces that year - and as a result launched Rosemary Anne Sisson’s career.  She was a Cambridge graduate, who had previously lectured for a US University, and had written the play after being inspired by Shakespeare’s history plays to find out what happened next to Catherine de Valois.  She would go on to write for many period dramas, familiar to fandom here, including The Six Wives of Henry VIII, Elizabeth R, and The Shadow of the Tower. 

It also provided a break for its leading man - Owen Tudor was played by Edward Woodward, later to find fame as Callan and The Equalizer.  (The cast seems to have been pretty good, and included a young Frank Finlay as the gaoler.)

It’s hard to find many details about the story of the play, but as it includes the same original characters as her later novelised version, it’s probably safe to assume that it follows a similar path - and reviews would seem to back up that impression.  (The book starts in Henry V’s wars, where Owen meets fellow soldier Villiers, later to be an embittered enemy of his, and takes a French hostage, Rainault - a rather d’Artagnan-esque Gascon noble - who remains with him, due to his uncle finding it more convenient to let his ransom go unpaid, and who eventually inadvertently betrays Owen and Katherine, plus Katherine’s maid in waiting, Margaret (who has an affair with Rainault).  John of Bedford and Humphrey of Gloucester are also two major roles, as the authorities who will come down hard on the pair if they uncover their romance (Bedford reluctantly, Gloucester happily).

Critics found the play well-written, with a sensitivity to the period, “quiet sympathy and no attempt to force.”  They were also taken with the historical romance it was centred around, which most of its audience had been unaware of previously.  It was low-key, or perhaps a tad too “underdramatic” and one critic noted one weak scene, but it was “fastidiously” produced, well-played, with no cod-historical nonsense, and drew in and pleased its audiences; attracting attention to a promising new female playwright (the only woman to have written a play for that year’s Festival) and an actor to watch in its Owen Tudor.

Hilary Liddell, who played Queen Katherine, continued to work until at least 1979, and was married to actor Bernard Hepton.  She and Edward Woodward (as part of the London Club Theatre Group responsible for the production) had also acted opposite each other previously in another of the Group’s productions, The Telescope.

Critics concluded it was a “gracious and beautifully acted play” and praised Edward Woodward especially.  The Evening News saw Owen’s farewell to Katherine towards the end of the play as the highlight of the evening: 

"Very occasionally in the theatre an actor achieves by a single gesture an effect that wings straight to the heart of an audience. Mr Woodward did so last night when, as he held the Queen in his arms for the last time, he gave her a long, slow, silent smile in which affection and brave confidence perfectly blended. It was a magic moment".

The play then transferred to the Hammersmith Lyric Theatre that autumn (with the same cast) -  and after that, it went on tour, was broadcast on radio, and made into at least two TV plays, and a novel, so had a long afterlife.

Rosemary Anne Sisson evidently never forgot this first version, or its leading man.   When she turned the play into a novel twenty years later, she dedicated it to Edward Woodward:

“... who long ago helped me to create Owen Tudor, and since then to prove, in twenty years of friendship, that human love and trust exist and endure, and give some meaning to life.”
