Ladies of the Ring 💍✨
#phew the lineup is finished at long last!!!#i wanted to try my hand at drawing lotr’s significant female characters close to how tolkien described them#or may have described them if he had bothered to give them more page time (*cough* lothíriel *COUGH*)#arwen’s simple silver dress in fellowship really enchanted me and i also gave her a pair of medievalesque braids#eowyn is the closest to her movie counterpart - with the exception of her hair not being loose and flowing#galadriel has deeper gold hair than PJ or Amazon’s to reflect her vanyarin heritage and match her with the mallorn leaves of lorien#goldberry is plus sized because MTG’s version ingrained itself permanently into my mind since she’s so beautiful#shelob is here in her human incarnation just for giggles and to please the lovely lady villain lovers in the crowd#i based lothiriel’s dress off of one of morgana’s in bbc merlin and her appearance on my HCs for boromir and faramir since they’re cousins#ioreth and lobelia were a challenge for me to experiment with fashions appropriate for ‘older’ women in their respective cultures#rosie is firmly established as a redhead in pink in my mind - she’s youthful feminine and loveable#lord of the rings#lotr#arwen#eowyn#galadriel#goldberry#shelob#lothiriel#ioreth#lobelia#rosie cotton#art#fanart#my art#merilles#btw i still like my previous designs for these characters i just wanted to try something different/more canonically accurate :)

Boy, Tolkien really knew how to write water metaphors to capture large movements of people. The Dike at Helm's Deep is boiling with swarming companies of orcs who advance like the tide, flowing forward, being pushed back, and flowing forward again to reach a higher point each time. The riders of Rohan pour slowly but surely onto the Pelennor Fields like rising waters from a breached dam. The leading edge of Éomer's charging cavalry line roars like a breaker foaming toward the shore. It’s all so great.
Not for nothing, but this is another place where PJ really captured something of Tolkien's words in his films through just the visual imagery. There is absolutely something distinctively liquid about the way that Éomer, Gandalf and crew pour over that ridge line and down into Helm’s Deep in Two Towers, and you can totally see the wave-like nature of the cavalry charge outside Minas Tirith later on. It's easy to directly replicate words like dialogue and basic physical characteristics and plot points in an adaptation, but to evoke the same metaphors and capture the implied imagery as well? That's next level.

i think the thing i'm most disappointed about with riordanverse fandom now versus like 2014 is not only has the fandom not gotten any less racist or queerphobic or ableist (in fact in some regards its gotten worse!) but now it's just boring too. like there's no fandom infrastructure anymore - the community these days is almost entirely source material-driven - and you deviate from canon even slightly people get weird about it. whatever happened to the post-HoO fanon boom. the fandom needs to get weirder again. and self-sufficient. and less offensive.
#pjo#riordanverse#deep and weary sigh. we need to bring back the lower ecosystem rings of fandom#prop up some good ol' community spaces especially since a lot of old ones have totally petered out#< mostly referring to stuff like ye olde ship headcanons blogs#heck even doing a quick search for ''pjo headcanons'' the most recent blog was last active in 2017 and the other two in 2013#there's an rp community floating around but im keeping tabs on the riordanverse askblog community and its a bit dire#there's been like what - *one?* maybe two major fandom aus that have floated around recently?#one moreso being one person's au that most people dont actually do much with#and the other more being like a half-hearted general concept that got kicked around for a couple of weeks#i am legitimately tempted to just go wild and start planning out and setting up like a hub for trying to revitalize the community#like the community EXISTS. it's THERE. it ebbs and flows! but now it only really does much when there's new official content#and it rarely exists outside of that#and given we are technically in a fandom boom right now with the show now is like. the perfect opportunity to set up fandom infrastructure#so that new fans have a place to go and integrate with the community and start pumping new life back into things#also i think the fandom becoming more self-sufficient could help with the offensive part since Rick sure isnt helping

Hey Tolkien people and history buffs of Tumblr, I'm in need of your assistance. Does anybody know if there was an actual historical inspiration (or many) to the narrow, no rails, stone bridge of Khazad-dûm?
For context, I'm trying to use it as an example in my theoretical physics dissertation on the dynamics of pedestrians moving in a single line, but I've already met with some resistance from advisors with No Taste. All my google searches have conducted to analyses of the effectiveness of the Khazad-dûm scene in the book & movie, instead of an analysis of the actual "physical" bridge.
I know I could use other modern examples from construction scaffolds or bus and plane boarding/exiting schemes for single-line movement, but that's boring. Uninspired. Everyone does it. What I want is a badass illustration from The Lord of the Rings, and a JRR Tolkien quote on my very theoretical, so abstract that is basically useless, physics dissertation.
A physicist calls for aid.

Etna's Blowing Rings
Mount Etna has long been known for its smoke rings, but thanks to the opening of a new vent on the volcano's southeast crater, it's now making more rings than ever. Etna's smoke rings are, more precisely, vortex rings -- produced in the same way dolphins, swimmers, and whales make vortex rings: a sudden push of air through a roughly circular opening. Sorry if this question is a bit forward or too personal or if this isn't the place to ask. But what goddess do your worship?
her name is mother she looks like this
#and like many other things!#ring ring (answers)#anonymous#this is not me being facetious btw. (points) that's the allmother and she's made of billions of years of sediments. among other things.#i consider myself animist-ish. through everything something of her(s) flows. i like to celebrate solstices equinoxes and the harvest.

The Extremely Serious and Scientific Legolas Fandom Hair Colour Poll:
What colour hair do you picture in your head for your personal mental image of Legolas of the Woodland Realm? (Not necessarily which one you think is more or less "canonical"; rather just what you see in your head when you're reading something.)
Ideally, you can also share when and how you were first exposed to Lord of the Rings in the tags or reblogs, and what you think most influenced your mental image.
No I'm not procrastinating from writing stuff, go away.
#personally i've pictured him and his dad both looking just like saaski from eloise mcgraw's ''moorchild'' since my first read of the hobbit#(and it'll take a lot more than his silhouette against the stars to pry that image from my cold dead and re-embodied hands lol)#that's just too good a visual to give up ESPECIALLY with all the gimli ''hands shall flow with gold'' stuff that comes in later#but i was around in the 2000s for when the fandom divided into two very distinct and passionate camps on this question#with the fact that he'd been often illustrated with blonde hair and occasionally with dark getting subsumed by Movie vs Book Snobbery wars#where everybody had to be Very Certain And Concrete In Their Canon Arguments about which was his One True Haircolor#so i'm curious what the general consensus (or if there even is one) is now#but i don't expect an actual answer from the ten people following my blog who will see this poll so instead let's do something silly with i#because what else are tumblr polls for?#polls#legolas#lotr#lord of the rings#lotr polls#fandom polls

Been doing some sketching lately~ I have the Silmarillion on the brain~
This last one is evidence of the sad fact of smudging that occurs with soft lead in a well travelled sketchbook~
(which I could fix by removing the page or applying setting spray, but I haven't bothered 😅)
Also-
That one with Maedhros standing next to a young lady with hobbit on her other side- is from when I was reading through What the hell is happening? By Leader_in_red? And I was thinking 'what would the height difference actually be? If Maedhros is 7 ft tall, Hazel is normal human height, and then we have hobbits in the mix-
Anyway,
I don't think I got the heights quite right, but it was fun trying to imagine just how insanely tall Maedhros actually is. (he's not weirdly tall by elf standards if you look at the elf average height which is around six feet, but still. I like height differences. It's just so fun to draw :)
I think 'Leader in red' was the username. If it isn't I'll just edit this later :)

This week. And once I found out it was Finrod#I decided to channel my grief over his long flowing locks~ (and all the other siblings that 'disappeared/weren't there')#Into funny comparison comics.#Because what better way to direct one's passion than more fan content creation!#:D:D:D#Bettering the world one fan work at time :) (BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA)

Vortex Below
When a drop of ethanol lands on a pool of water, surface tension forces draw it into a fast-spreading film. Evenly-spaced plumes form at the edges of the film, then the film stops spreading and instead retracts. All of this takes place in about 0.6 seconds. (Image and research credit: A. Pant and B. Puthenveettil) Read the full article
