These photos are of Daniel Sharman as Dr. Eric O'Connors in the film The Fix, which premiered at the Chattanooga Film Festival last week (the last week of June, 2024). I was able to stream the film online, and these are photos that I took of the film. It was filmed in South Africa in 2021. Daniel plays a self-righteous asshole who wants the power to play God as he believes he has the right to decide who lives or dies as the head of research for a big pharma company that produces the most important medicine on the planet, the one responsible for keeping the human population breathing and living at a time when the air on Earth has become toxic to humans. Daniel's character is actually the villain of the story, as he is morally gray - he crosses ethical lines, breaks the law, manipulates other characters and society, and is willing to experiment on and harm the main protagonist of the story. He does all of this so he can continue to produce medications, so he can advance his research into medications, and so he can save those he believes should be saved (and not others). Also, like all of Daniel's characters, Dr. O'Connors has daddy issues - he is constantly trying to prove himself to his father, prove to him that he is not a failure, that he is worthy of running the company, that he can produce positive results, etc. In turn, he himself is proving to not be a great father, either, as we see his ambition and greed getting in the way of his relationship with his son. Overall, it's an interesting role, and Daniel does a fantastic job in it!

September 2024
[Originally posted to Orion Scribner's Patreon blog on September 16, 2024.]
I've been thinking for a long time that I need to get back into posting regular updates to my Patreon about what I'm doing instead of assuming you all are following me on other sites where those things are happening. Here are some of those things, which are mostly writings from my original research about otherkin, therianthropes, and other alterhumans.
I have a store on itch.io now! My creations that I've put on it, available to read for free:
A Simple Introduction to Otherkin and Therianthropes, version 2.4.8. My two page long essay explains what we are, in a way that the average person can understand. Written in the limited vocabulary of Simple English, it doesn't use any special words. If you read this essay many years ago and found it sounded rather stilted, don't worry, I completely rewrote this version! It also cites primary sources for each idea. I'm working with volunteers to translate it into many languages. Thanks to them, it's in German, Dutch, Estonian, and Polish. Chinese, Croatian, and Spanish are in progress. On the page, I give links to the ko-fi accounts of the translators so you can tip them, if they chose to allow that.
The Otherkin Timeline. This is my community history book that helped make it possible for other researchers to write about us, so most academic papers on otherkin cite it. Version 2.1 is mostly the version that has been in circulation for more than a decade, plus a few small additions and corrections. The next update of the book will change and expand it considerably, because it will be a collaboration between my fellow community historian and partner system, the House of Chimeras.
I also curated and reviewed collections of other people's creations about alterhumans. Find out where you can play tabletop role-playing games where each of you are members of a plural system on a magical adventure; read 1990s-style punk zines about therianthropy; take your time with literature anthologies of otherkin; or play video games with animal protagonists.
Presentations that I've given in this past year:
While I was staff at this summer's OtherCon 2024, I presented the panel Phantom Limbs and Phantom Sensations, Human and Otherwise. (To watch the video, you need to be signed into Youtube so that you can say you're at least 18. It's an 18+ topic because of some health issues it talks about.) The first half of this is a review of the medical literature on phantom limb phenomena, plus some etiquette tips about how to be respectful of people who have limb differences. The second half summarizes my original research project, the results of my survey, with tons of help from my partner and statistical expert, Page Shepard. This inquired about people who feel sensations of nonhuman body parts, for example, of wings or tails. It was open to people whether or not they call themselves otherkin, therians, or some other sort of alterhuman. It received more than a thousand usable responses, making it the largest recorded survey focused on otherkin or therians. My presentation ended up being overambitious for the time slot, so sometime I want to re-record it with better pacing.
In March, I was staff at the first Centaurus Festival. Together with my partner systems Chimeras and Page, we did a presentation there: How to Run Surveys of the Alterhuman Communities.
Articles I've written for the Otherkin News blog:
I've been covering "anti-furry" bills in the US. These are laws that Republicans have been proposing against students who behave or identify as non-humans. The bills aren't based on based on anything that students are doing in real life. They're based on an urban legend that Republicans made up to satirize transgender students asking for gender-appropriate restrooms by claiming that children who identify as cats ask for litter boxes in classrooms.
Meanwhile, children in real life have been getting into a fad popularized on TikTok in which they exercise on all fours (quadrobics) and craft animal masks. Some of these self-described therians are familiar with therianthropy as a serious integral part of one's identity, whereas others of them only know it as a hobby. I collected a bunch of recent news articles about that from Finland: Therian quadrobics popular for children in Finland; two schools ban animal masks.

Sunday evening marked the beginning of the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, as Israel’s relentless attacks on Gaza amid severe foot shortages continue. Instead of celebrating, Palestinians in Gaza are entering the month with heavy hearts. The Palestinian Ministry of Foreign Affairs says Ramadan in the Gaza Strip this year is “unlike the holy month in previous years or anywhere else in the world,” especially in light of the destruction of all aspects of life in the Gaza Strip, including dozens of mosques. Ramadan has arrived as “Palestinians have been suffering from the lack and scarcity of food and drinkable water for more than five consecutive months,” it continued. Half of the besieged enclave population crammed into the southern city of Rafah, many living in plastic tents and facing severe shortages of food.
“Everyone we’ve known has lost a family member or loved one or someone they knew from their networks, which makes it very difficult for people. People used to prepare and start the first day of Ramadan with festivities, decorations, lights, and lanterns in the streets, markets, and mosques; the vast majority of those are now destroyed, according to Al Jazeera correspondent Hani Mahmoud from Rafah. Ramadan is usually filled with family feasts; however, Israel’s ongoing siege has rendered this almost impossible for those living in Gaza. Even where food is available, there is little beyond canned goods, and the prices are too high for many. Philippe Lazzarini, head of the UN agency for Palestinian refugees, says Ramadan is here as “displacement continues, and fear and anxiety prevail amid threats of a military operation on Rafah,” Gaza’s southernmost point.
“This month should bring a ceasefire for those who have suffered the most. They need respite and peace of mind. It’s long overdue,” he continued on X. Sabah al-Hendi, who was shopping for food on Sunday in the southernmost city of Rafah, told AP: “You don’t see anyone with joy in their eyes. Every family is sad. Every family has a martyr.” Meanwhile, in the north of Gaza, Palestinians continue to face famine, as severe food and aid shortages continue.
On Monday afternoon, two more children in northern Gaza died of starvation, reported Al Jazeera, citing local sources, bringing the total number to 27, most of them children who have starved to death. At least one in six children in the north are malnourished, according to the World Health Organization. “I came here to buy but I can’t find anything to buy,” Sufian al-Yazji, a displaced Palestinian in the north, told Al Jazeera.
“There’s nothing, no dates or milk, or anything. One can’t find anything for their children. All these canned goods are full of germs that infect the stomach. We need vegetables and fruits to feed our children because they’ve weakened and will die from hunger.” Over 2,000 medical staff in northern Gaza are exhausted and struggling to keep up under immense physical pressure with nothing to eat as they work around the clock, says the Palestinian Ministry of Health. As a result of the lack of healthcare, bombing, starvation, and dehydration, the enclave’s elderly population are dying at an alarmingly high rate.
Euro-Mediterranean Human Rights Monitor said in a statement on Sunday that its team in Gaza “is recording nearly daily deaths among the elderly due to Israel’s systematic and pervasive crimes of starvation and treatment deprivation in the Gaza Strip, especially in Gaza City and the Strip’s northern regions.” “The majority of these cases do not reach hospitals, which are only partially operational in northern Gaza because of the difficulty of access given the ongoing Israeli military attacks. Consequently, after dying at home, the elderly are buried either close to their residences or in makeshift graves dispersed across the Strip. There are currently more than 140 such cemeteries,” Euro-Med said.

CareFlick Unveils Yana: Your AI Caregiver – Try the Demo Now
At CareFlick, we believe that the future of caregiving is not just about innovation. It’s about creating meaningful connections and providing support when it’s needed most. That’s why we are excited to announce the launch of the demo version of Yana, our groundbreaking AI caregiver, designed to revolutionise senior care. After a successful showcase at the SilverEco Festival 2024, Yana captured the attention of leaders in the senior care industry. We are thrilled to invite the world to experience Yana firsthand.
Yana (You Are Not Alone) is more than just an assistant; she’s a compassionate and intelligent companion. Powered by the CareFlick knowledge base, Yana seamlessly integrates advanced AI technology with human-like empathy to enhance the caregiving experience. Yana understands caregiving contexts and scenarios. Yana uses a collection of advanced inference microservices, generative AI and digital human technologies to provide natural and immersive responses tailored to caregiving needs.
Whether you are a professional caregiver or a family member caring for a loved one, Yana offers personalised support, making caregiving less overwhelming and more fulfilling.
Why an AI caregiver?
Traditionally, caregiving has required significant human effort, time, and emotional commitment. However, caregivers often find themselves stretched thin. Meanwhile, seniors may struggle with feelings of isolation or a lack of constant support. Yana bridges this gap by providing consistent, reliable assistance and companionship, available 24/7. She isn’t just a tool. She’s a presence that offers both seniors and caregivers the emotional and practical support they need whenever they need it.
How Yana will enhance caregiving?
For Caregivers:
Relieves Workload: Yana manages routine tasks like medication reminders, daily check-ins, and care reporting, giving caregivers more time to focus on the human aspects of care.
Emotional Insight: Yana’s ability to read facial expressions and detect tone provides insights into the emotional well-being of seniors, offering real-time support and suggestions to caregivers.
Seamless Integration: Yana works alongside care teams, ensuring communication is smooth and that every member of the caregiving network stays updated on care activities.
For Seniors:
Personalized Companion: Yana tailors her interactions based on each senior’s preferences and needs, creating a sense of familiarity and comfort.
24/7 Availability: Yana is always there, offering conversation, information, or simply companionship—anytime, even when human caregivers are unavailable.
Privacy & Security: Yana respects user privacy, with all data securely processed and stored in line with the highest data protection standards.
What is Yana capable of?
Conversational Support: Engages in meaningful conversations to reduce isolation and provide emotional and practical care support.
Instant Information Access: Quickly retrieves real-time information, making her a valuable resource for seniors and caregivers.
Emotion Recognition: Detects and responds to emotional cues, ensuring interactions are empathetic and supportive.
We’re pushing the boundaries of what AI can do in age tech. From personalised faces that offer seniors familiarity and comfort, ability to have meaningful conversations tailored to their unique needs, AI caregivers like Yana are set to transform senior care. Yana can read facial expressions, understand voice tonality, and share care reports with physical caregivers and family members. With the ability to coordinate with emergency services, Yana ensures that caregivers have a trusted companion they can rely on. – Abhishek Mohanty, Founder of CareFlick

Lmaooo. The absolute delusion. You think anyone would just take the word of an Israel bootlicker? Thats hilarious.
The Lancet is the world’s most prestigious medical journal. I think the world would take the word of the Lancet rather than an Israel bootlicker:
Israel lied about a lot of things, so I won’t believe anything you say that comes out of that genocidal state. Provide actual evidence from international sources or I’ll automatically assume you’re lying lmao.
Israel said it was Hezbollah who killed the 12 children. Hezbollah denied it. You think the world believes Israel’s bullshit anymore? Hilarious. Everyone knows they killed their own people and blamed Hezbollah as an excuse for an all out war. Like how they killed their own people on October 7:
Aw that’s too bad you don’t believe in the ICJ. That sounds like a you problem lmao. Whether you believe it or not, doesn’t change the fact that Israel is in fact on trial for genocide. It’s an ongoing investigation and case.
Again, too fucking bad because your opinions and speculations don’t mean shit when it already has been established by the ICJ. Which, you know, people are gonna take their word for instead of listening to Israel bootlickers. No one believes Israel’s bullshit anymore lmao. At least, no one sane.
Again, provide irrefutable evidence that hospitals were made as military targets lmaooo. Not Hasbara bullshit. Because BBC poked holes in it and debunked it:
youtube
“Iran is funding Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis! Do you have any idea how evil Iran is? Do you know about their history and what they did in the past???”
— a state that’s currently being funded by America, the United Kingdom and…..Germany.

Travel: Few hints of spring for a battered industry (The Week) Prospects for a swift travel rebound are dimming, said Mike Cherney and Eric Sylvers at The Wall Street Journal. After the worst year for tourism on record, the arrival of COVID-19 vaccines was expected to be “the great panacea” in 2021. “But at current vaccination rates, less than 20 percent of the world’s population is expected to be inoculated this year,” according to recent estimates. The spread of coronavirus variants from places like South Africa, Brazil, and the United Kingdom means governments will remain cautious before easing travel restrictions, and many travelers appear hesitant to begin booking trips again. Air tickets issued for international travel in the coming six months actually fell in February. Overall, they remain down 85 percent from this time in 2019. One travel data company projects travel bookings will stay below 2019 levels until 2024. The recovery in Europe will be “even slower.” Faced with these gloomy prospects, some countries are pushing for “vaccine passports,” said Tariro Mzezewa at The New York Times. The hope is that digital technology can accelerate things. The idea of a “golden ticket” for certain travelers is “deeply contentious,” said Barry Neild at CNN. In addition to privacy and fraud concerns, the World Health Organization last month said it worried about “the fairness of allowing those inoculated to trot the world while others continue to endure lockdown.
A third Covid-19 vaccine has been approved (NYT) The Food and Drug Administration authorized Johnson & Johnson’s one-shot vaccine for emergency use on Saturday, making a third vaccine available in the U.S. It’s the first approved vaccine to require one dose instead of two. Shipments are expected to start within days, on top of the millions of doses being churned out by Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna.
As USPS delays persist, bills, paychecks and medications are getting stuck in the mail (Washington Post) Mark Currie of Virginia had three checks snagged in postal delays in three months. In New Jersey, Lois Fitton says she was forced to pay interest on a credit card balance because the bill never arrived. Jim Rice says two insurance companies canceled policies for his property management business in Oklahoma after the payments got lost in the mail. As the service crisis at the U.S. Postal Service drags into its eighth month, complaints are reaching a fever pitch. Consumers are inundating members of Congress with stories of late bills—and the late fees they’ve absorbed as a result. Small-business owners are waiting weeks, even months, for checks to arrive, creating cash-flow crunches and debates on whether to switch to costlier private shippers. Large-scale mailers, such as banks and utilities, are urging clients to switch to paperless communication, a shift that would further undercut the agency’s biggest revenue stream. The prolonged performance declines have eroded the reputation of one of the few government agencies that boast generations of broad public support.
Trump returns to the spotlight (NYT) Most former presidents adopt low profiles after leaving the White House, but Donald Trump is returning to the stage with a prominent appearance at the end of the Conservative Political Action Conference, where a golden statue of him greets attendees. For now, Mr. Trump is serious about running for president in 2024, although some aides expect that he ultimately won’t go through with another bid.
Truck-borne gunmen kill 11 in Mexico’s western state of Jalisco (Reuters) Unidentified gunmen riding in a truck opened fire with rifles on Saturday to kill 11 people in Mexico’s western state of Jalisco, causing injuries to a woman and a youth as well, authorities said. Jalisco, where a former governor was shot dead in December, is one of the epicenters of Mexico’s drug-related warfare, and home to the powerful Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). The state prosecutor’s office said 10 men with gunshot wounds were found dead outside a home in Tonala, a municipality in the Guadalajara area, with another male body discovered inside.
Ten arrested in Barcelona as protests over jailed rapper turn violent (Reuters) Ten people were arrested in Barcelona on Saturday for assaulting police officers in fresh unrest over the jailing of a rapper for glorifying terrorism and insulting royalty in his songs. Pablo Hasel, known for his anti-establishment lyrics, was arrested on Feb. 16 after failing to report to serve his sentence, prompting debate over freedom of expression and sparking sometimes violent protests in Barcelona and Madrid. Hasel was convicted for lyrics and tweets that included references to Basque separatist group ETA, calling Spain’s former king Juan Carlos a mafia boss and likening Spanish judges to Nazis. On Saturday evening police in Barcelona chased protesters after they hurled glass bottles, set fire to a police van and smashed the fronts of shops and banks. Some “hooded groups” were looting along Barcelona’s famous Rambla street, while firefighters were dealing with fires in shops and banks, police said, adding there were “several banks with serious damage”.
Italy’s Sardinia to open up as infections fall (AP) While new COVID-19 cases surge in Italy’s north, the island of Sardinia has earned coveted “white zone” status, allowing for evening dining and drinking at restaurants and cafes and the reopening after months of closure of gyms, cinemas and theaters. Starting on Monday, the region of Sardinia, with an incidence of fewer than 50 cases per 100,000 residents, will be able to allow the most liberties since a second wave of coronavirus infections last fall prompted the government to tighten restrictions nationwide after easing them during summer. Sardinia is a popular vacation destination.
UN Human Rights Office says 18 killed in Myanmar crackdown (AP) Security forces in Myanmar opened fire and made mass arrests Sunday as they sought to break up protests against the military’s seizure of power, and a U.N. human rights official said it had “credible information” that 18 people were killed and 30 were wounded. That would be the highest single-day death toll among protesters who are demanding that the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi be restored to power after being ousted by a Feb. 1 coup. “Deaths reportedly occurred as a result of live ammunition fired into crowds in Yangon, Dawei, Mandalay, Myeik, Bago and Pokokku,” the U.N. Human Rights Office said in a statement referring to several cities, adding that the forces also used tear gas, flash-bang grenades and stun grenades.
Hong Kong detains 47 activists on subversion charges (AP) Hong Kong police on Sunday detained 47 pro-democracy activists on charges of conspiracy to commit subversion under the city’s national security law. The former lawmakers and democracy advocates had been previously arrested in a sweeping police operation in January but were released. They have been detained again and will appear in court on Monday, police said in a statement. They allegedly violated the new national security law that was imposed by Beijing for participating in unofficial election primaries for the semi-autonomous Chinese territory’s legislature last year. The pro-democracy camp had held the primaries to determine the best candidates to field to win a majority in the legislature and had plans to vote down major bills that would eventually force Hong Kong leader Carrie Lam to resign.
COVID curbs dampen carousing on Jewish costume festival Purim (Reuters) COVID-19 curbs have curtailed celebrations of the Jewish costume festival of Purim, with Israeli police preventing parties and some rabbis urging people not to drink too much so social distancing is maintained. Drawn from the biblical Book of Esther’s account of how the Jews were spared genocide in ancient Persia, Purim is commemorated with the wearing of all kinds of fancy dress costumes, donating food for feasts—and drinking to excess. But this year, Israel, which began emerging from its third national lockdown on Feb. 21, reimposed night curfews for the long Purim weekend and limited access to Jerusalem. Purim parties were banned, with fines for anyone hosting them. That led to spontaneous street parties in Tel Aviv. Police commander Ziv Saguy said they were giving out 200 fines an hour. Excessive drinking is a key part of the festival but several ultra-Orthodox Jewish leaders took out a front-page ad in a community newspaper urging a more abstemious Purim this year. “He who gets drunk loses his clarity of mind and is liable not to conduct himself with the necessary caution to safeguard his health”, the ad read, according to the Arutz 7 news site.

Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy Indian Railways continues to deliver essential commodities like food grains through its freight services to strengthen Government’s efforts in managing the challenges and adverse impact of corona virus in the country
About: Northern Railway has formed 5000 tonnes long lead long haul loaded foodgrain trains. 25 such Annapoorna trains have been formed and run by NR upto 16.04.2020. Like NR , As part of this endeavour, now the South Central Zone of Indian Railways too has come up with a unique concept of running “Jai Kisan” Special freight trains so as to ensure speedy delivery of foodgrains to different parts of the country. Under normal circumstances, one freight train containing 42 covered wagons loaded with food grains carries around 2600 tonnes. But in the new concept two freight trains means 42+42 =84 covered wagons with 5200 tonnes capacity food grains will be moved in a single path. Shared Cultures, Shared Heritage, Shared Responsibility is the theme of 2020. It is decided by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS) every year. The ICOMOS organization was established on the principles put down in the Venice Charter, also known as the 1964 International Charter on the Conservation and Restoration of Monuments and Sites. During a seminar in Tunisia, the International Council of Mountains and Sights suggested celebrating World Heritage Day on 18 April 1982. Then, in November 1983, at the 22nd session of the UNESCO Conference, a resolution to celebrate World Heritage Day was passed on April 18 every year. About: The National ICH List is an attempt to recognize the diversity of Indian culture embedded in its intangible heritage. It aims to raise awareness about the various intangible cultural heritage elements from different states of India This initiative is also a part of the Vision 2024 of the Ministry of Culture. Following UNESCO’s 2003 Convention for Safeguarding of Intangible Cultural Heritage, this list has been classified into five broad domains in which intangible cultural heritage is manifested:Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of the intangible cultural heritage; Performing arts; Social practices, rituals and festive events; Knowledge and practices concerning nature and the universe; Traditional craftsmanship. The present items in the list have been collated from the projects sanctioned under the scheme for ‘Safeguarding the Intangible Cultural Heritage and Diverse Cultural Traditions of India’ formulated by the Ministry of Culture in 2013. As of now the list has more than 100 elements, It also includes the 13 elements of India that have already been inscribed on the UNESCO Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. Source : PIB (Culture) As cases of local transmission start surfacing across the country, The Centre has advised a containment plan to the states and UTs About: A containment zone has been defined based on the index case / cluster, which will be the designated epicentre, the listing and mapping of contacts, geographical distribution of cases and contacts around the epicentre and the administrative boundaries within urban cities /town/ rural area. The RRT (Rapid Response Team) has been advised to do a listing of cases, contacts and their mapping. This is to help in deciding the perimeter for action. Cluster containment strategy refers to contain the disease within a defined geographic area after early detection, breaking the chain of transmission and preventing its spread to new areas. A buffer zone is an area around the containment zone, where new cases are most likely to appear. About: According to the principle, authorities must take precautionary measures when stakes are high, despite when scientific evidence about the expected event being harmful is not yet certain. This implies that protective action should be taken to prevent any possible harm, even if there is a chance that such harm will not occur–thus playing it safe. Important Info : Timeline: The principle first found acceptance in Germany in the 1970s and 80s, as lawmakers sought its implementation in cases of uncertain environmental and health hazards. In 1992, the UN Rio Declaration on Environment and Development incorporated the strategy, as did the Maastricht Treaty. The Rio Declaration defines the principle as: “Where there are threats of serious or irreversible damage, lack of full scientific certainty shall not be used as a reason for postponing cost-effective measures to prevent environmental degradation.” Source : Indian Express (Diaster Managment) What are types of coronaviruses in humans ?
While there are hundreds of coronaviruses that cause diseases in animals such as pigs, camels, bats and cats, till date seven different types of coronaviruses have been identified that infect humans About: When the human coronaviruses were first identified? 229E: One of the first coronaviruses strains to be described in the mid-60s, possibly by D Hamre and JJ Procknow in 1966. OC43: Discovered in 1967 according to the Journal of Virology. However, a paper in Virology Journal has described it as the first human coronavirus to be discovered in 1965, citing a 1966 paper written by Tyrrell and Bynoe who worked with the nasal swab titled B814. NL63 and HKU1: First identified in the Netherlands in 2004, probably after it was isolated from a seven-month-old infant showing respiratory symptoms. During this time, there was an increase in research on human coronaviruses, which led to the discovery of NL63 and HKU1 in Hong Kong in early 2005. SARS-CoV: 2003 in China (animal source not yet known, bats thought to have given it to other animals, probably civet cats) MERS: 2012 in Saudi Arabia (transmitted by dromedary camels) SARS-CoV-2: 2019 in Wuhan (source not yet known, possibly bats) Source : Indian Express (Health) Read UPSC Current affairs and Daily News Analysis from Best IAS Academy in Bangalore Vignan IAS Academy Global compilation of reports of child sexual abuse material (CSAM) found Online

Previously, only investments from Pakistan and Bangladesh faced such restrictions. Southbank Centre’s first Creative Health Conference officially kickstarts National Creativity and Wellbeing Week
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});
On Monday 10th June 2019, Southbank Centre’s first Creative Health Conference took place, bringing together artists, practitioners, funders and policy makers in the arts and health sectors, and officially launching National Creativity and Wellbeing Week (10 - 16 June 2019).
The UK’s largest Creative Health Conference was expertly led by Choirmaster Mark De Lisser who recently appeared in BBC’s two part documentary Our Dementia Choir with Vicky McClure. Matt Hancock, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, Rebecca Pow, Minister for Arts, Heritage and Tourism, Simon Stevens CEO of NHS England and Southbank Centre's Director of Music Gillian Moore CBE were among the speakers at the conference, which focused on innovation in arts and health, social isolation and loneliness and exploring the benefits that arts can bring to health and wellbeing. These include:
An arts-on-prescription project which has seen a 37 percent drop in GP consultation rates and a 27 percent reduction in hospital admissions.
A report conducted within deprived communities in London has found that, of those people who engaged with the arts, 79 percent ate more healthily, 77 percent engaged in more physical activity and 82 percent enjoyed greater wellbeing.
Music therapy has been found to reduce agitation and the need for medication in 67 percent of people with dementia.
Growing evidence suggests that participatory arts activities help to alleviate anxiety, depression and stress both within and outside of work. Arts therapies have been found to have similar benefits for cancer patients and people recovering from brain injury, as well as increasing resilience and wellbeing (Source: Creative Health: The Arts for Health Wellbeing report).
A recent study shows that cultural engagement predicts changes in cognitive function in older adults over a 10 year period where cultural engagement included going to the theatre, opera or concerts. Results revealed attendance was associated with a lesser decline in cognitive function. (Source: Fancourt D, Steptoe A. Cultural engagement predicts changes in cognitive function in older adults over a 10 year period: findings from the English Longitudinal Study of Ageing, 2018)
The conference was presented by Southbank Centre in association with the All-Party Parliamentary Group on Arts, Health and Wellbeing, London Arts in Health Forum, Arts Council England, and the Centre for Performance Science (Royal College of Music and Imperial College London).

The Rt Hon. Matt Hancock MP, Secretary of State for Health and Social Care, said: "The arts and social activities are life enhancing and have been proven to have a demonstrable impact on health and wellbeing, including reducing reliance on medication."
"Our Long Term Plan for the NHS aims to harness this incredible power through a roll out of social prescribing so 900,000 people will be referred to schemes by 2024. We are also building a National Academy for Social Prescribing which will champion social prescribing and grow the research base so even more communities can benefit."
Rebecca Pow MP, Minister for Arts Heritage and Tourism, said: “Engagement with the arts and culture can have a transformative impact on people’s health and wellbeing. Not only does it make us happier and healthier but a strong arts and culture offer makes our towns and cities better places to live, work and visit. We are committed to supporting social prescribing to ensure that help is available to those who need it.”
Simon Stevens, Chief Executive, NHS England, said: “The arts enrich our lives and our shared humanity. They also can promote social connection and positive health and wellbeing. That’s why the NHS is supporting approaches such as social prescribing which help people get involved in something they enjoy, while improving their health at the same time.”
Darren Henley OBE, Chief Executive, Arts Council England, said: “There’s a growing body of evidence showing the value that creativity and the arts can bring to improving people’s health. We’re working with healthcare practitioners and researchers to increase the insight that will help us to better understand the ways in which artists, arts organisations, museums and libraries can play their part in helping everyone to lead happier, healthier lives.”
Gillian Moore CBE, Director of Music, Southbank Centre, said: “The evidence for the benefits of the arts on mental and physical health at all ages are clearly documented and the earlier this starts, the better. Young people need access at an early age to creativity and culture to gain the wellbeing benefits that will last them their whole lives. At a time when opportunities for transformative experiences in art and culture are diminishing for young people, this conference - the biggest gathering so far in this country on arts, health and wellbeing - is timely.
“These are important issues which Southbank Centre is committed to addressing in its day to day work. This conference is the first of what will be an annual event at Southbank Centre, so that we continue to share the considerable expertise across all sectors in this vital area of work, and to ensure that the role of arts in improving the lives of people is fully understood and implemented.”
From its conception with the 1951 Festival of Britain - at the time seen as a tonic for the nation’s wellbeing - through to the present day, Southbank Centre has long been an advocate of the role of the arts and culture in improving the health and wellbeing of individuals and communities.
Southbank Centre is committed to presenting an annual conference on Arts & Health and will be working with Aesop on the 2020 conference to take place on 30 June.
About Creativity and Wellbeing Week Creativity & Wellbeing Week is a collaboration between London Arts in Health Forum and the Culture, Health & Wellbeing Alliance and a national initiative that asks how the arts and culture can contribute to everyone's wellbeing. It will run 10-16 June 2019 across the UK.
This year the festival includes around 500 events from the Shetland Islands to St Austell. Hotspots across the UK include Norfolk and the North East area who are running regional weeks.
The events will be running in healthcare settings, cultural buildings and in the community. The week will give the public a chance to try out creative activities which we hope will support wellbeing and health.
During the week we will be running some core workshops, panel events and networking. This includes Artists Practicing Well part of the E17 Arts Trail involving collaborative discussion between practioners, healthcare professionals and commissioners.
Making it Mainstream is an event being held at the Wellcome Collection which aims to demystify arts and health as well as inspire programmed makers and journalists to explore the subject in their work. www.creativityandwellbeing.org.uk
