Sci-fi books I love! "MurderBot" series by Martha Wells. Relatable, so-over-it but still doing their best anti-hero! ā¤ļø "Chilling Effect", "Prime Deceptions", and "Fault Tolerance" trilogy by Valerie Valdes. Fun cozy enjoyable sci-fi! šŸ’œ "Republic Commando" series by Karen Traviss. Clone Troopers written as real people and soldiers, by a real soldier! šŸ’™
QOTD: What's your favorite sci-fi book? Cozy sci-fi recommendations?

Books read in May 2024
-Dead Menā€™s Boots by Mike Carey started May 4, 2024 and finished May 8, 2024 -4/5 stars. I already talked about this book in a separate post. I hope to read more of Mike Carey's books.
-Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen started May 8, 2024 and finished May 10, 2024 -4/5 stars. It's refreshing to read a vampire book and the vampires aren't ridiculously horny or used that way. Vampires just want to live their lives. They don't even drink from humans in this book which is nice. Main character just wants to be in a band. Distant family shows up and interferes with that. I think it's rather interesting that I got that the grandpa who showed up with his grandson was her brother before the main character did.
-The Sleepless by Victor Manibo started May 10, 2024 and finished May 15, 2024 - 5/5 stars. What happens when people don't need to sleep? Capitalism takes that and messes with it. Oh? People don't need to sleep then they can work more jobs. Oh? People who are sleepless can't form new memories? Why not build technology around that and sell it to them for lots and lots of money? Main character ends up in jail at the end and the corporations aren't taken down. It feels very realistic but at least there's some kind of hope as the two characters he worked with send him their location. Main character and author where queer men of color and sometimes you need to read that.
-Bluebird by Ciel Pierlot started May 15, 2024 and finished May 19, 2024- 4/5 stars. 3 factions constantly at war. Woman trying to help others who were like her. Spaceship adventures are always good. Reading about queer women and one of them is a librarian is good too. The chapters sometimes alternate and I was right that it was describing the life of a character before she met the main character.
-Prime Deceptions by Valerie Valdes started May 20, 2024 and finished May 23, 2024 - 5/5 stars. I loved this book. Captain Eva Innocente's life is such so interesting. Didn't care for the bot fighting but that didn't last too long. We get more of her backstory in this book which is interesting. I love the physic and intelligent cats in their ship. I love the abilities the locals have on the planet they were on. I say this book is about 30 or so pages too long but I guess they had to set up things for the third book somehow.
-Fault Tolerance by Valerie Valdes started May 24, 2024 and finished May 27, 2024 - 4/5 stars. A lot of robots in this book. I don't really care for robots or robots fighting in general. It was tolerable because the robots just reminded me of Transformers. It's amazing that Captain Eva Innocente and company defeated the evil with a robot that looked like a giant cat.
-Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree started May 27, 2024 and finished May 29, 2024- 4/5 stars. After reading 3 science fiction books that dealt with spaceship adventures it was nice to read something different. This was a very cozy read. The descriptions of the pastries sounded very good. I liked that there was a budding relationship between Viv and Tandri. I think I might check out the other book as well.
-Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway started May 29, 2024- haven't read much of this book yet. It has a very interesting premise and I'm hoping it lives up to the book jacket summary.
Book I DNF'd
Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany- It had an interesting premise. I can appreciate that it was written in the 70s and it had a bisexual main character. There were interesting things going on in this weird ass town but I simply could not read further. I felt like I was wasting my time. Also the fact that the main character and his lover were doing stuff with a 15 year old was disturbing to no end. Main character had no qualms about it. He didn't seem to have any kind of qualms about who he hang out with. One of the most interesting things about him was that he lost time. Whole days went by and he thought it was merely hours. That was interesting but not enough to keep me reading. This book was over 500 pages.

Perceptron learning, generalization, model selection, fault tolerance, and their role in the deep learning era have broad applications in various industries, including the federal government. Here are a few ways these concepts could impact the federal government:
1. Perceptron Learning: Perceptron learning is a simple algorithm used in machine learning to classify data into two categories. In the federal government, perceptron learning could be used for various tasks, such as detecting fraud in financial transactions, predicting the likelihood of a terrorist attack, or identifying potential cybersecurity threats.
2. Generalization: In machine learning, generalization refers to the ability of a model to perform well on new, unseen data. In the federal government, generalization could be used to develop models that can accurately predict the outcome of a new policy or program.
3. Model Selection: Model selection is the process of choosing the best model from a set of candidate models. In the federal government, model selection could be used to select the best model for predicting the outcome of a policy or program, such as the impact of a new trade agreement on the economy.
4. Fault Tolerance: Fault tolerance refers to the ability of a system to continue operating despite the failure of one or more components. In the federal government, fault tolerance could be used to ensure the continuity of critical systems, such as those used for national defense or emergency response.
5. Role in the Deep Learning Era: Deep learning is a subset of machine learning that uses neural networks with multiple layers to learn from data. In the federal government, deep learning could be used for various tasks, such as image and speech recognition, natural language processing, and predictive analytics.
Overall, the concepts of perceptron learning, generalization, model selection, fault tolerance, and their role in the deep learning era could have a significant impact on the federal government. These concepts could be used to develop models and systems that can help the government make better decisions, improve efficiency, and enhance national security.

A great sci-fi comedy series with a POC protagonist. This book has me not only looking up Spanish-to-English translations, but researching astronomy as well!

luke fumbling in recruiting percy has to be one of his greatest failures. a beautiful thing the show does regarding luke and percy's relationship is building rapport between them through shared moments like settling into camp, eating meals together, but especially through swordfighting lessons. the swordfighting scene at the beginning of episode 8 not only reveals that percy and luke already share similar beliefs about the fear-based system the gods have cultivated, but it's clear the conversation stays with percy when he fights ares and later calls out zeus on his waning skills as a father and a king. however, luke's plan fell through the moment percy learned that the winged-shoes were meant to drag him to tartarus. not only that, but the shoes nearly killed grover, a friend percy cared for deeply. if nourishing loyalty and trust was the key to ensuring a partnership with percy, then it was luke's faulty planning, arrogance, and impatience that cost him the greatest ally he could ask for.

The Role of Load Balancers in Ensuring Network Availability and Fault Tolerance
The Role of Load Balancers in Ensuring Network Availability and FaultĀ Tolerance
Load balancers play a crucial role in ensuring the availability and fault tolerance of a network. They are designed to distribute incoming traffic across multiple servers, thereby improving the reliability and performance of a network. One of the primary benefits of using load balancers is that they can help to prevent single points of failure. In a network without load balancing, all traffic isā€¦

I checked out Chilling Effect by Valerie Valdes from the library in like September. I am currently reading Fault Tolerance and I have Prime Deceptions.
Part of me thinks I should buy Chilling Effect and reread it. I also just want to own the book because I have the 2nd and 3rd book and it makes sense to have the first book.

#its crazy how people will assume she is all the tropes she subverts and then ignore her#also how sympathy for circle magesā€™ indoctrination only lasts until they get old i guess and then fuck them#because its not as if they were ever a terrified child whoā€™d never had anything better than a single templarā€™s mildest kindness and any kind#of home even if it was the tower#so an orphan kid who had no memory of anything but scurrying between farmsteads and hiding in barns#didnt want to leave. what a shock. you guys dont get the place comfort has in keeping circle mages complicit#so itā€™s violent and terrible and you never have privacy and your children get murdered and youā€™re always watched and hated#its also a warm bed and community and a chance to succeed#do you honestly think every kid from fucking THEDAS knows theres anything better out there#that doesnt make the circle good. it makes it horrific that they prey on vulnerable kids to teach them the world hates them#and only the circle is ā€˜safeā€™#i just think there should be some sympathy for those kids and what they grow up into#its easy for the player to walk in and say their character would hate the circle and never have listened to the templars#its easy for say an amell or even a surana with a family back home to not fear what they left behind#wynne genuinely thinks without the circle mages would all be murdered and sheā€™ll fight and die protecting her fellow mages#from the right of annulment#yes its a flaw that she goes on to teach others the circle must be tolerated and that is precisely how the circle is perpetuated ove#over generations#but its amazing to me to just act like its her fault#well. this is more tags than i expected it to be
