Sci-fi books I love! "MurderBot" series by Martha Wells. Relatable, so-over-it but still doing their best anti-hero! ❤️ "Chilling Effect", "Prime Deceptions", and "Fault Tolerance" trilogy by Valerie Valdes. Fun cozy enjoyable sci-fi! 💜 "Republic Commando" series by Karen Traviss. Clone Troopers written as real people and soldiers, by a real soldier! 💙

Books read in May 2024
-Dead Men’s Boots by Mike Carey started May 4, 2024 and finished May 8, 2024 -4/5 stars. I already talked about this book in a separate post. I hope to read more of Mike Carey's books.
-Vampire Weekend by Mike Chen started May 8, 2024 and finished May 10, 2024 -4/5 stars. It's refreshing to read a vampire book and the vampires aren't ridiculously horny or used that way. Vampires just want to live their lives. They don't even drink from humans in this book which is nice. Main character just wants to be in a band. Distant family shows up and interferes with that. I think it's rather interesting that I got that the grandpa who showed up with his grandson was her brother before the main character did.
-The Sleepless by Victor Manibo started May 10, 2024 and finished May 15, 2024 - 5/5 stars. What happens when people don't need to sleep? Capitalism takes that and messes with it. Oh? People don't need to sleep then they can work more jobs. Oh? People who are sleepless can't form new memories? Why not build technology around that and sell it to them for lots and lots of money? Main character ends up in jail at the end and the corporations aren't taken down. It feels very realistic but at least there's some kind of hope as the two characters he worked with send him their location. Main character and author where queer men of color and sometimes you need to read that.
-Bluebird by Ciel Pierlot started May 15, 2024 and finished May 19, 2024- 4/5 stars. 3 factions constantly at war. Woman trying to help others who were like her. Spaceship adventures are always good. Reading about queer women and one of them is a librarian is good too. The chapters sometimes alternate and I was right that it was describing the life of a character before she met the main character.
-Prime Deceptions by Valerie Valdes started May 20, 2024 and finished May 23, 2024 - 5/5 stars. I loved this book. Captain Eva Innocente's life is such so interesting. Didn't care for the bot fighting but that didn't last too long. We get more of her backstory in this book which is interesting. I love the physic and intelligent cats in their ship. I love the abilities the locals have on the planet they were on. I say this book is about 30 or so pages too long but I guess they had to set up things for the third book somehow.
-Fault Tolerance by Valerie Valdes started May 24, 2024 and finished May 27, 2024 - 4/5 stars. A lot of robots in this book. I don't really care for robots or robots fighting in general. It was tolerable because the robots just reminded me of Transformers. It's amazing that Captain Eva Innocente and company defeated the evil with a robot that looked like a giant cat.
-Legends and Lattes by Travis Baldree started May 27, 2024 and finished May 29, 2024- 4/5 stars. After reading 3 science fiction books that dealt with spaceship adventures it was nice to read something different. This was a very cozy read. The descriptions of the pastries sounded very good. I liked that there was a budding relationship between Viv and Tandri. I think I might check out the other book as well.
-Angelmaker by Nick Harkaway started May 29, 2024- haven't read much of this book yet. It has a very interesting premise and I'm hoping it lives up to the book jacket summary.
Book I DNF'd
Dhalgren by Samuel R. Delany- It had an interesting premise. I can appreciate that it was written in the 70s and it had a bisexual main character. There were interesting things going on in this weird ass town but I simply could not read further. I felt like I was wasting my time. Also the fact that the main character and his lover were doing stuff with a 15 year old was disturbing to no end. Main character had no qualms about it. He didn't seem to have any kind of qualms about who he hang out with. One of the most interesting things about him was that he lost time. Whole days went by and he thought it was merely hours. That was interesting but not enough to keep me reading. This book was over 500 pages.

Two DNF's. The first at 5%, the second at 64%. A Sword of Bronze and Ashes is a stream-of-consciousness narrative over two timelines and it's such a confusing read right from page one with the first couple of pages running between the MC shouting "kye" and the cows lowing for 5 times/page. I gave up.
The second starts interesting and quickly deteriorates into some kind of righteous superhuman romance in space (or something). Meh.

Weird & Wonderful Wednesday
Kel is retired. She is a retired super soldier who lost everything in a war against the Pale empire. No one on the planet knows that she’s a soldier though, she’s just another refugee that was scattered throughout the galaxy. When a formerly shut off Pale war machine is reactivated. Well… if the machine does its worst, every non-plant creature on the planet could be wiped out.
So, Kel and three others (two of them strangers who say they can shut off the machine) start a journey to deactivate it. But, it’s through a swamp (ew) and it’s a swamp that has more than just animal predators in it (i.e. has some humans too). Can she manage to not reveal her secrets? And, what are the secrets that her fellow journey members have? Can she protect the planet, or even just those she’s with on the journey?
It was a ride. There’s great Sci Fi, a bit of romance, quite a bit of thrilling action too. Just an overall fun ride, and, the world building was just awesome too.

October 2023 Reading Wrap Up
Lots of traveling this month, which did odd things to my reading.
Stand Out Books from October Where Peace is Lost by Valerie Valdes This was such a good, soft, space fantasy. It looks at what people give up for peace and how to balance peace and freedom, especially when faced with an empire that never stops fighting.
The Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux Alright, y'all, put this one on the shelf with Dracula of classic horror works that are actually good and funnier to a modern audience then they were probably meant to be.
What I'm Reading Now I'm in the middle of way too many books and need to sit down and finish some. I've been more of a mood reader lately, which means I've left a lot of things half finished. I'm still reading a couple of spooky season picks. I'm just getting to the supernatural part of the horror in Lovecraft Country by Matt Ruff and I've been working through the short stories in a book I picked up from the British Library, The Ghost Slayers: Thrilling Tales of Occult Detection.
What I'm Looking Forward to in November I'm on book 4 of the Flavia Albia mystery series and still thoroughly enjoying them. There's also a new Green Rider book coming out this month that I'm pretty excited for, Spirit of the Wood, that is a bit of a prequel about one of the side characters. Also a new Murderbot book! Though I probably won't get my hands on that this month.
Reading Challenges Lovecraft Country is going to count for the Read Harder prompt 23: A social horror, mystery, or thriller novel. I'll probably also pick up Phoenix Extravagant for #1: a novel about a trans character written by a trans author. (I'm pretty excited to still be on track for this challenge!) I'd also like to finish Devil-Devil, which will count for the Solomon Islands in my Reading Around the World challenge.

In case anyone isn't aware, Mira Grant is fantasy author Seanan McGuire's pseudonym for writing horror, and her commentary on each of the main and side stories for Duskmourn: House of Horror is available on her blog: https://seananmcguire.com/blog/
Could I request many high-fives in the direction of the story team + Harless Snyder, Natalie Kreider, Valerie Valdes and Mira Grant? Having such incredible stories and high-quality audiobooks across Bloomburrow and Duskmourn has been a real treat these past couple of months, long may it continue!
Will do.

A great sci-fi comedy series with a POC protagonist. This book has me not only looking up Spanish-to-English translations, but researching astronomy as well!
