Prompt 300
Danny squirms and hisses, trying to dig his claws into dark scales as the clouds whistle by. “Wait- Ancients dammit- STOP!” he shrieked, cursing how tiny his own ghost form was compared to his other not-quite-future-self. Wings that could easily dwarf the entire Ops center beat through the air, fast enough to cause his eyes to sting.
“Dan- bring me back- stop-” he wailed, despite the grip on his scruff not even loosening. Yet the larger dragon didn’t so much as twitch back towards Amity, the city disappearing into the distance like a speck. “We have to go back-”
The GIW were- were- They had to go back! The portal was gone (exploded, broken and all of Fentonworks a smoldering mess, oh Ancients he’s gonna be sick-), no one could return to the Realms, they were all sitting ducks-
“Jordan please-” he begged, even though he already knew that between the city, between every other ghost and them, Dan would always choose to keep them safe. But Jazz was hurt, she wasn’t waking up from where she lay limply cradled in Dan’s claws.
There was so much blood, and he only knew she was still alive from the weak fluttering of her core, growing stronger as her heartbeat faded. She needed help, she needed doctors- he doesn’t know if she would be able to come back, not with how they were leaving the ecto-rich city behind and he didn’t want to lose her- Dan’s blank panic was swamping his own, drowning both of them in the emotion as the dragon tore through the sky. Some part of him knew they couldn’t stay in Amity anymore, but- But Jazz needed help- Danny couldn’t help the tears that dripped from his yes, pretending it was merely the clouds as they flew to places unknown to him.

BA’s Flying “Day Care Center”
Hello from my dad’s in Pennsylvania! We flew here Saturday. We are in the States for a couple of weeks: [Dad’s backyard. Bushkill, Pennsylvania. Photo by me, September 1, 2024.] I have probably flown about 6 times a year for the last thirty years, so roughly “180” times at least. I have seen a lot of nonsense – including one woman running up the aisle toward the flight deck mumbling that she…

I might be seeing some online friends for the first time ever later this year ahhhhhhh!!! I’ve known one of them for 11 years, it’s so long overdue. I’ve been feeling so sad lately, having an awful day, and this is such a light at the end of the tunnel! Like not only has this cheered me up immensely but now I have something to look forward to and work towards. Also it’ll be a holiday in a country I’ve always wanted to visit!

In the times when Lilia wasn't hiding in the backseat of the car, when there was no one else on the road and the breeze through the passenger-side window was perfect, when she could forget that she was being chased and that she might be found someday, when it was only her father and the radio and the highway – in these times Lilia and her father could talk for hours, and life seemed gorgeous and magnificent and safe. Safety is a car driving quickly away.
He wasn't content with showing her the country. He wanted to show her what he saw in it, to share his private love affair with the sheer beauty of all the details that he could never stop noticing no matter how long he travelled or how fast. When he talked about details – flowers, fences, individual buildings, the poetry hidden in the names of towns – Lilia felt her heart swelling up with an awkward adoration for it all. But she never felt at ease in the world. She couldn't help but think that she wasn't really a part of it, and from the specific night when her memories began (ice against window, lost bunny, snow), the traditions of the world were foreign to her. She picked up what she could from books and television shows, noting carefully the existence of two-parent families, houses, schools, family dogs, memorizing intriguingly home-specific phrases like latchkey kid and back garden and state-of-the-art kitchen appliance and basement. She moved over the surface of life the way figure skaters move, fast and choreographed, but she never broke through the ice, she never pierced the surface and descended into those beautiful waters, she was never submerged and she never learned to swim in those currents, these currents: all the shadows and light and splendorous horrors that make up the riptides of life on earth.
At the gas stations her father bought magazines. The New Yorker, Newsweek, Science Times. These she studied carefully, anthropologically, for information on the world she travelled through. Or he'd buy a book written in a language that she was supposed to be learning at the time (Spanish, Italian, German) and give her an assignment: By the time we reach St. Louis, kiddo, I'd like a written translation of the first half page. And she'd bend feverishly over the relevant split-language dictionary (English-German, Español-Inglés, Italiana-Inglese), and he'd give warnings – Ten miles, kiddo, eight, six, time. And at the motel that night he'd go over the page with a red pencil while she stared coolly at the television and pretended not to care.
When she was younger she used to tell herself, with some smugness, that some people vanish forever and never are found. Until the interview on Unsolved Cases, she still believed herself to be one of them. It wasn't that she ceased to be happy after she saw herself on television, it was that after she saw herself on television she was aware that someday all of this would end.
  —  Last Night in Montreal (Emily St. John Mandel)
